Reading A Song of Ice and Fire: A Clash of Kings After Book Report

So yeah, I think I liked this one better than AGOT? Not that A Game of Thrones wasn't good--it definitely was--but I think George found a little more of his grove with this one. Also, I didn't have any adolescent reading trauma associations with it the way I did with AGOT, which helped.

Also, zero percent of this book took place in my number one least favorite location in Westeros, the Eyrie, so I have to give George props for that as well. Thank you, George. I know you're going to make me go back later because I'm spoiled from fanfiction, but the reprieve is appreciated.

Anyway, I promised another set of commentary on the POVs, so let's go.

Prologue

MAESTER CRESSEN YOU WILL ALWAYS BE FAMOUS TO ME. But no, like, seriously, I think I mentioned this while I was liveblogging, but I am always impressed with how George can get you to empathize and care about characters over the course of a single chapter. And I do care about everyone on Dragonstone now--I care quite a lot about them. Mostly because Maester Cressen cared. His sad, sullen boy...

(I appreciate that Melisandre gave him the chance to back out, even if he didn't take it.)

But yeah, George did a really good job of making me care about Team Stannis, who I don't think I would have quite so much if he hadn't had Maester Cressen's POV and later Davos', so good job, George.

Arya

So first of all, I love Arya a lot and have since the very beginning. Her chapters are always very solid and she feels like a realistically drawn kid put in horrible, terrible, traumatic circumstances. And she's a really good person to view how much all the warring in the Riverlands is fucking it up for the ordinary people who live there.

I was surprised by a lot of little things in her chapters? Like I knew some of the broad strokes through fandom osmosis: Yoren dies along the way, she ends up in Harrenhall, she makes friends with Gendry, she meets Jaqen H'ghar, she develops a Kill List, Hot Pie is there? But the ways that everything happen surprised me. Weasel soup, especially, surprised me. I had no fucking clue that Arya would instrumental in getting Harrenhall back into Northern hands.

Also I was very surprised that the whole cupbearer thing only lasted a single chapter? I guess that's because I had the impression that she spent half a season as one on the show. Actually, the fact she doesn't get to Harrenhall until Arya VI surprised me too, because I'd had some vague idea that she'd be there almost the entire book.

Sansa

MY POOR TRAPPED GIRL. God, I also love her so, so much. Both Stark sisters are really good and you can't make me choose between them. She's just so clever and nobody notices it, because they haven't realized that she's not the same callow, naive kid that she was before her dad was arrested.

She's also very much still a middle school kid (as is Joffrey in the worst possible way) and it's enough to make some of Dontos' bullshit hella uncomfortable. Stop giving her slobbery cheek kisses, dude. Gross. Combined with the perennial weird vibes between her and Littlefinger and it's like she's just a magnet for older men being gross. Poor kid.

(I do not blame her for not leaving with the Hound, though, because he was drunk as a fucking skunk and like... that whole scene where she finds him in her room had such bad vibes and like normally he's the guy that I feel Sansa's most safe around, because his bark is worse than his bite with her. But not just then. I wouldn't have gone with him either.)

Tyrion

So like I've heard that ACOK is really the book where Tyrion gets his chance to shine as, like, a politician and yeah, I get it. He's very good and very competent at his job and it was delightful to see him be clever and tricksy and competent. He's a very fun perspective to be in, definitely, and I get why he's everyone's favorite character and George's special boy. Like okay I don't think he's my favorite? But that's nothing against Tyrion. I still like him a lot.

We get more Tysha context and it's so goddamn sad and even without the stuff I've been spoiled on, you could tell that she did love him, that it didn't matter how they met, because she did love them during the time they were husband and wife. Also, god, they were babies when it happened.

Speaking of Tyrion's girlfriends, I was really surprised by how, like, monogamous he was with Shae, because that is not the impression you get of this guy in fandom, but it turns out that when he commits to a woman he commits. And Shae's kind of blatantly in it for the money and security, but like you can see her getting charmed by him... but then TYRION X happens and he slaps her and you can almost see her mental gears realigning on him. Something deep inside her went fuck you at him in that moment and it's gonna have repercussions.

(Also, and I hate to say this, but while he's not in love with Cersei the way Jamie is, there's definitely some weird undercurrents in his interactions with her that make me wonder about the Lannisters more.)

Bran

MY BOY. MY DARLING BOY. I love him so much. And because I love him, I love Winterfell and all the people there. Like I've heard that people find his chapters boring and pointless and skip them on rereads and I'm like why??? Because Bran's chapters, where you get to know the people of Winterfell and the other people in the North are what make you care about them when everything goes to shit. They're what makes you want to throw Ramsay Snow down a goddamn fucking well.

So yeah, I liked his chapters. They were good. He is good. I hate Ramsay so much more now that I've met Lady Hornwood and she was a real person who was in love with Ser Rodrick and SHE ATE HER FINGERS BECAUSE OF HIM. GOD I HATE RAMSAY SNOW.

(Also the Reeds are great and I am looking forward to seeing more of them even as I am very much sad to be missing our number one feral child Rickon.)

Jon

So yeah, Jon's storyline remains a very good traditional Hero's Journey and I am enjoying it for what it is. I don't have as much commentary on his stuff not so much because I don't like it, but because it's just very much in genre? His stuff is where this is most like a normal fantasy novel, I guess.

I will say that, like, fandom osmosis fucking fooled me once again. Because I thought he'd be spending at least half the book undercover with the Wildlings and that literally does not happen until his last fucking chapter.

Catelyn

MY GIRL. Catelyn chapters always make me happy to read. (She's like Bran that way.) And starting from Catelyn II, her chapters also have Brienne, who I have been waiting eagerly for ever since I began to read these books, because Brienne of Tarth is half the reason I ended up tumbling headlong into this fandom.

(I went into it a little more in my previous book report, but basically after being somewhat traumatized by Bran II in AGOT when I was a teenager, I refused to read further for the next twenty-five years, until taking a chance on a P&P fusion fic with Jamie/Brienne endeared me to the pairing enough to read more. Eventually I gave in and actually started reading the books themselves, starting with Dunk and Egg to ease me into it.)

But yeah, Cat continues to be great and she also continues to not do shit by half, which is one of the things I like best in a character. Catelyn VII and the conversation with Jaime was a fucking highlight and I keep wondering what it would be like to read these books without being spoilered to hell and back, because the way that chapter ends. It's just good. It's so good.

Davos

There is only one problem with Davos and that it's so goddamn hard for my ex-Whovian ass not to call him Davros. Which would be completely unfair to the guy, since he's a good fucking guy and not the evil genius who created the Daleks.

But no, seriously, I really like and appreciate Davos, who is a decent, normal dude in the middle of this goddamn clownshow. I like his dynamic with Stannis, which is so good, and if you'll allow me to be Homestuck on main for a second... they're moirails, your honor, they're so goddamn pale for each other it's ridiculous.

But yeah, Davos is good and I liked his chapters a lot and that goddamn shadow baby scene will fucking haunt me, like what the fuck.

Theon

I suspect I would have hated Theon a lot more without being spoiled for his eventual fate and the things he did and didn't do. As it is, I read his chapters with the constant urge to facepalm, over and over again, because goddamnit, Theon. Like it's very clear that the dice were loaded from the start against this man and he's in a lot of situations where there's been no good options, but still. God-fucking-damnit, Theon. You made an already precarious situation just that worse. Also you made me have to read scenes with Ramsay in them and I really hate that guy. Go away, Ramsay.

Daenerys

Honestly, these were mostly pretty solid chapters? Like Daenerys III is less interesting than some of the others, but Daenerys IV and the House of the Undying more than makes up for it. Like seriously, that was such a goddamn banger of a chapter. I think it might be tied with Catelyn VII for personal favorites from the book.

Again, I definitely wonder what it would be like to read these books unspoiled, because like while I was extremely happy to see Barristan popping up in Daenerys V as 'Arstan Whitebeard,' I bet I'd have been even more psyched to be blindsided by it whenever it actually comes up in ASOS or ADWD.

That said, I can still appreciate a good reveal even if it's for something I knew about, so I'm not too worried. And being spoilered is like my emotional shield to prevent me from sadquitting over the Red Wedding next book like I did a quarter century ago over the yeeting of Bran. Speaking of which, I'm glad to be finally starting ASOS now, since it took me a couple days to write up this post, hahaha.

2.) super cheesey but my family <3. my parents and i are closer in age than usual and its let us be really close, plus i love my 3 sisters almost like theyre my own kids

3.) gifs! i asolutely love collecting gifs and images. sometimes ill listen to music and just scroll thru the stimboard tag on my blog. plus i love having the right gif to text someone if a niche situation pops up

4.) Lassen volcanic national park. CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED fr. it has every single type of volcano! beautiful high sierra flora and fauna! both extremely accessible ADA boardwalk trails and challenging backcountry hikes/peaks to bag!! if you ever have the chance to visit its in northern california and i highly reccomend. probably my favourite place on earth

5.) bit of a weird one, but the CCC? I was really, really struggling a year ago and joining the C's did SO much to put me back on my feet and get motivated to actually live life again. ANY young adults out there who are struggling i highly reccomend looking to see if your state has a conservation corps. in california specifically we have the CCC (california conservation corps) which is a little more macho with a sort of "get shit done" attitude, and the ESCC (eastern sierra conservation corps) which has more of a nerdy we love the environment vibe and HELLA queer members. but lots of states have conservation corps and i know i always wished i had heard about them sooner so yeah! im just happy the C's exist

I’ve wanted to get back into reading (it’s been working I read dps book version since I already love the movie, started rereading the hobbit, finished this poison heart which I started like 3 years ago and was 70% through, and finally started the secret history)

But I’ve been craving a specific (Niche?) genre of literature because fiction has me in a certain mood??

Does anyone have any book recs that are have these vibes:

- life is strange or gravity falls type story (Pacific Northwest, forests and fog maybe some cryptids or supernatural stuff)

-not straight up horror- like if it has creechurs they are a little spooky and there’s “something strange about this town” that’s cool but it’s not like constant horror and death more like nature being mildly creepy and supernatural, maybe there’s a mystery to solve or it focuses on the characters similar to life is strange

1: Describe their clothing aesthetic. Do they have any trademark color schemes/stylistic influences, etc.?

Liuyin wears red and black so, so much as one might have seen. 

Their style is based off an amalgation of several different eras of Chinese history, most primary the Ming dynasty Aoquns, which are basically dresses where you wear the blouses over the skirt instead of under it as with the ruqun.

But there’s plenty of other eras influencing this, such as the Song Dynasty, where clothing took simpler and more minimal designs

I’ve found that in drawing and designing Liuyin, they’re a person whose style is sort of modest and understated-- even with the Ming Dynasty style, where the high collars were meant to show off buttons (a luxury for the wealthy), their clothing is unembroidered, and unornamented except for the butterfly brooch they make a tendency to wear. Which is why I usually refrain from drawing them in Tang-style chest-high ruquns

Liuyin’s masquerade gown, by far the most lavish of their outfits, is inspired off of the Sui dynasty, as well as the Northern and Southern Dynasties.

Their hair is usually left half-up, half-down, and the hair style they have is pretty much impossible to achieve with their hair length (mid-back) but suspend disbelief please TTATT. Their hair is done into two buns in the back, with hair pulled from the sizes of their face left to hang down over their ears, before being pulled back into a loop that hang below the buns, creating the illusion of a third “bun”. theoretically would require a crap ton of hairpins and patience. drawing then with their hair half-up, half-down and their fringe being more loose and relaxed is completely acceptable because no, I don’t understand the logistics of this either.

Of course, these looks are always, always, always topped off with red lip tint.

8: If your OC was a character in a historical fiction show/movie/book/game/etc, which era, and what would their plotline look like?

Wuxia style, unspecified Chinese dynasty but probably during the Northern and Southern Dynasties

Tientsin Mystic and Nirvana in Fire and possible Romance of Tiger and Rose and Goodbye My Princess vibes. Sheesh, that’s a lot.

I’m imagining a very very generic and tropey cdrama where Liuyin, from the household of a renowned general of x nation whose mother is dead, is arranged to be married but runs away from home, and travels to y nation instead, where they meet love interest a, who’s probs a commoner who probably mentors them in the general know-how of like, how to survive on their own bc sheltered noble trope.

bonus points for if they have some sort of moment where they accidentally unlock their powers and then faint and there’s some sort of reveal it has to do with their dead mother who had the same abilities and was killed by someone for it.

meet love interest b, who was like the senior disciple of a reclusive cultivational sect and has hella belligerent sexual tension with liuyin, who has a training montage

anyways, it also involves them meeting love interest c who’s actually their fiancee but they gave fake names to each other

also involve a plague but the plague turns its victims to zombies

also involve a cult murdering and experimenting on people, trying to turn them into said zombies from the plague.

meanwhile the murders are being investigated by liuyin, who has the specific power to divine dreams and visions.

also involve one of the love interests being evil and betraying and possibly killing liuyin.

also involve their family having colluded with said cult to undermine the kingdom so they can conquer them all

also involve liuyin dying to save humanity or something, probably with some sort of spell that sealed the plague away that used up all their life force

They’re dead a period of time, where they go to the underworld and are confronted by granny meng, who tells them to haul their ass back to the living world-- but not before they carve their name next to the name of the love of their life onto the stone of three lives

and they meet all their love interests again in the similar circumstances as to how they first met and it’s up to the viewers to decide who they chose

Liuyin would absolutely adore Shaanxi and Beijing food and some Sichuanese and Hubeinese foods as well!! Their favorites in order: beijing style lamb skewers, lamb soup, cold noodles, braised meat on bun, roast duck, liang fen, lotus root soup

hi, I like to write but I never publish anything anywhere and if I do I always forget to come back to it. Right now, I’m really into reading harringrove fics! There are so many good ones out there and some writers are hella talented. I really like Lana’s album NFR, it had such a California vibe and you know who’s from California? Billy. Lmao. So, inspired by California by Lana Del Rey, I wrote a little blurb. Maybe if enough people like it I’ll turn it into a fic and publish it here. :) I really do recommend you listen to the song while you read! I hope someone likes it.

Steve was frantic grabbing everything he could and shoving it into the small duffle bag he had. He didn’t know how he was going to explain it. Steve couldn’t confront him knowing he’d try to make him stay. But he couldn’t stay not anymore, no matter how much he loved California. The heat found in Southern California was different from anywhere else and the drive up to Northern California had so many memories of tired laughter and breakfast dinners. Most of all he loved the way Billy would light up in California. To be back home so close to the beach, to see how tan he got after a week being here.

Steve loved it; loved him. But he couldn’t stay not after what he’d heard. He couldn’t take Billy with him, he’d already had to leave home before it would be selfish to make him leave a second time. So he left the small apartment they shared; the one they worked so hard to find. He took one good look around the apartment before Billy came back. Everything at this moment was timed, he could be back at any minute. Every second was precious. As he walked into the kitchen to pick up his camera he passed by the Polaroid they took the first night here.

He let his hand brush the picture just the way he would brush his hand through Billy’s hair to lull him to sleep. Softly, slowly as if it were to rip or break at any moment. His heart felt constricted and it begged him to stay. But his mind was stubborn, one of the characteristic Billy claims was the reason he fell in love with. Steve let his hand dropped and the moment ended. He was ready to walk out the back door, not even bothering to take the apartment key out of his keychain when he noticed a blue envelope. His name was written in neat handwriting, the only kind Billy would produce. Which Steve thought never made sense because Billy seemed like the kind who didn’t care about his penmanship.

Steve bit his lip, debating whether or not to take it. He was anxious to know what was written but knew it would break his heart even more. He sighed, giving in snatched from the window sill and he left his home. He got into his car, his destination unclear but he drove off. After driving for 2 hours he stopped to get gas, the envelope burning into his mind. Just because he couldn’t really deny Billy anything during the time they were together, Steve decided this was the last time. He grabbed the envelope opening it and unfolding the paper inside. Random Fact: i undertook a cross country road trip when i moved from east to west coast and, even though it was across the northern US in the middle of january with my car stuffed full with all my shit, it’s honestly one of my most favorite trips i’ve ever done. i enjoyed Yellowstone and the Black Hills so much that about 2yrs later me and my friend did a close loop road trip that went back to those places (plus a few more we’d been dreaming of for a while lol)

Summary; You join Freddie, Rog, Bri and Mary on a spontaneous roadtrip to a cabin of Brian’s uncle in Scotland but it starts snowing heavily while on the road.

‘Not that damn country music again!’ Roger came out of his seat and bended forward to reach for the radio.

‘Hey! Driver is king!’ Brian objected and swatted his hand away. You were in the van heading to Scotland and it had been like this for the past two hours.

‘King my ass! If I hear another Johnny Cash song I swear I’m gonna jump out of the moving van voluntarily.’

‘Be my guest.’

‘I quite like it actually.’ Freddie who was sitting behind Brian commented and bopped his head to the rhythm. ‘It has a nice vibe to it don’t you think Rog?’

‘Not after the five hours we’ve been listening to it, no I don’t Fred.’ Roger fumed.

‘Rog get your ass out of my face and sit down.’ You demanded and tried pulling him back by his elbow.

‘Hey! You should be on my side!’ Roger spoke indignantly.

Brian laughed and turned up the volume. ‘Y/N has good taste, unlike our princess Rog over here.’

‘Well I couldn’t agree more.’ You affirmed. ‘But I just don’t wanna die just yet, alright guys. ’

Roger finally sat down but not before quickly grabbing a handful of crisps and throwing it at Brian’s back.

‘Hey! What the hell Rog!’ Brian cried out annoyed and shook his shoulders to get rid of the crisps. ‘Don’t distract the driver!’

You could see Rogers hand now sneakily reaching for the bag of chocolates but you caught his wrist right in the act before he could cause any more damage.

‘Rog, I swear to god, calm the fuck down.’ You said, trying to sound serious but not succeeding very well.

‘Or what?’ He asked with a smirk, looking at you.

‘Or I’ll cut your precious hair in your sleep tonight.’ You replied, narrowing your eyes at him.

‘Ha.’ He had an amusing look in his eyes. ‘You are feisty today. I like it.’

‘Just tired.’ You replied and rubbed your forehead.

‘Oh, I can see that babygirl.’ He said, smiling sweetly. You wanted to hit his arm for agreeing you looked tired but he caught your wrist in the air, just like you did before with his.

‘Let’s not start a fight like you said hmm?’ He reminded you, looking at you intensely. You groaned but your heart was beating in your chest. If only he knew the effect he had on you.

He let you go and you shifted your body to find a comfortable position. Maybe it was indeed better you got some sleep. It would be a long trip and your eyelids were heavy.

 You had been in the car for three hours so far, two of which consisted of arguing and fighting. It was like you entered a family. Everyone already seemed to know each other for ages and you felt strangely at home and completely accepted as well. It was a genuine group of people and they made you feel at ease.

You also had to agree with Roger that Freddie was pretty damn cool. He did indeed have wicked style and even though he seemed quiet at times, when he did say something it was always something interesting or smart or witty. He had something about him but you didn’t know just quite what it was. You also noticed he seemed very much drawn to Mary, which Brian didn’t really seem to mind. You wondered if they were even still together as you hadn’t seen them close in a long time.

When Roger had picked you up from uni that afternoon you’d quickly stopped by your apartment to pick up some clothes and a toothbrush, as he told you the plan was to drive all the way up to Scotland which would take up to one and a half days. You were going to visit a country-house of an uncle of Brian who used it as his holiday residence but only during the summer months.

Apparently there had been a forecast predicting the northern lights could be spotted up there in the north.

 ‘That’s why we are going to drive for two days?’ You had asked.

‘No.’ Roger replied. ‘I mean yes, Brian loves that shit, but it’s also a wicked house with a fire place and great scotch.’

You yawned and closed your eyes.

‘Can I have those chocolates, Rog?’ Freddie asked. ‘Mary wants some.’

‘Sure thing.’

You started to drift off, the sounds turning blurry and fading to the background. You were almost out when something briefly pulled you back to your consciousness.

‘Your girl is starting to fall asleep Rog.’ Brian noticed, looking in the rearview. Your girl. Had he actually said that? Did they see you as rogers girl? That made you happier then it probably should. You had to suppress a smile since you were pretending to be asleep and tried relaxing your face.

‘Yes she probably needs it, with all the exams.’ You could hear Roger say softly and you started to drift off again. You shifted a little so your head rested on his shoulder and he let it.

When you woke up it was dark outside. You slowly started to recognize voices but kept your eyes closed.

‘You aren’t even listening.’ You could hear Brian say.

Roger groaned. ‘Yes, God help me I am.’

‘Then what did I just say.’

‘You were saying that neutron stars, which are leftovers from the deaths of massive stars in supernova explosions, are so dense that just a bowlul of neutron star material has more mass than the moon.’

‘Ha I finally got through to you! You see, astrophysics is hella interesting huh?’ Brian said, clearly surprised but equally impressed.

‘Nah I’m just bored.’ Roger replied while yawning loudly.

‘Wait, don’t fall asleep just yet! You know what’s even more fascinating?’

Roger sighed, not even trying to hide his disinterest. ‘No. Please do enlighten me Bri.’

‘Planet Saturn would float on water.’ Brian said. ‘Float on water! I mean, isn’t that just beyond? It’s actually the only planet in our solar system that would.’

‘Okay that’s…. that is actually pretty wicked Bri.’ Roger conceded, a trace of genuine excitement in his tired voice. Maybe he wanted to sleep a bit as well.

 ‘What time is it?’ You asked, voice raspy from the sleep.

‘Ah she’s awake.’ Brian said and looked at the clock above the speedometer. ‘It’s 21;30’

‘Oh jeez. How far is it still?’ You asked.

‘Not too long left for today.’ Brian answered and gave you a smile through the rearview mirror. ‘The snowfall is starting to get very heavy anyway and we should get some rest.’

‘Are we sleeping in the van?’ Mary asked.

‘Unfortunately I’m afraid so.’

‘Oh darlin, we could have easily booked a hotel!’ Freddie complained, shaking his head.

‘Too expensive, Fred.’ Brian replied, giving him an apologetic smile.

You got out of your sleeping position and looked out of the window. The light from the front headlights caught the snowflakes in a soft glow and you saw Brian was right. The snow was starting to get more and more heavy.

 Half an hour later you spotted something on the side of the road.

‘There was a sign just now. Did you see it Bri?’

‘No?’

‘Maybe it’s saying there’ll be a gas-station in a few miles.’ You uttered.

‘Okay I’ll keep my eyes open.’ Brian replied and bended forward to be closer to the window.

After five minutes indeed a gas station showed up and Brian took a left turn. He drove around the station and pulled up on the side.

‘Alright guys. Time to get some rest.’ He said and you noticed Roger was already gone, head fallen backwards and lips slightly parted. You smiled and put your head back on his shoulder.

‘Goodnight everybody.’

‘Goodnight darlings.’ Freddie said.

Brian turned the engine off. ‘Yes, sleep well people.’

And with that you drifted off again.

 When you woke up you thought it was still dark out as there was almost no light coming in through the windows. You moved a little, body stiff from the cold and quickly realized the van was completely covered in snow. Brian, Mary and Freddie were up as well but Roger was still sound asleep, looking so peaceful your heart ached a little.

‘Ah for fucks sake.’ You heard Brian curse from under his breath and realized he was trying to start the engine without having much success.

‘It’s not working, is it.’ Freddie stated.

‘No it’s not Fred.’ Brian replied and you couldn’t help but notice the tiny trace of annoyance in Brian’s voice. He seemed worried.

‘We need to clear the snow around it first.’ Mary said. ‘We should go outside.’

‘Yeah you’re right.’ Brian agreed and rubbed his hands together to warm them up. ‘Let’s go outside everybody! Y/N can you wake up that sleepyhead, we need him.’ You nodded and turned to Roger.  

‘Rog?’ You shook his shoulder. ‘Rog.’ He groaned something you couldn’t understand. ‘Ey Taylor, we need you.’ You spoke, raising your voice. He still kept his eyes closed but started to gain consciousness so in a whim you took your icy-cold hands and slid them in the collar of his jacket, resting them against the warm skin of his neck. He shrieked and dived away from you and your cold hands.

‘What the fuck?’ He cried out, eyes big and confused as to how you could be so cruel. ‘Do you want me dead, woman?’

‘No but we need to clear the snow around the van or we will die up here actually.’ You plainly stated.

Roger looked around, still disorientated from just waking up.

‘What happened?’

‘Heavy snowfall. We’re completely covered up. Now let’s go.’

You grabbed the door handle and tried to open it. You pulled and pushed but it was completely stuck. You wondered how the others succeeded in opening theirs as the door wouldn’t move in the lightest bit.

You wanted to try a different door when you suddenly felt Roger leaning into you, using his weight to help you open it, his body pressed up against yours.

You could feel his breath on your cheek when he spoke. ‘One, two, three.’ He counted and on three you both crashed your weight into the door, finally causing it to open. You landed in the knee-deep snow and had to blink a few times, trying to get your eyes used to the impossible brightness of the outdoors. The whole world was white and unrecognizable. The gas station was clearly closed and you wondered if had ever been open, as it looked completely deserted.  

Freddie, Mary and Brian were already grabbing arms full of snow from around the van and throwing it elsewhere. Freddie seemed in an awfully good mood compared to the others and was humming some kind of melody you didn’t recognize. You noticed none of them were wearing gloves.

Roger and you both joined them and started diving into the thick snow, a shiver running down your spine from the cold against your skin.

After half an hour of intensive work the van was cleared of enough snow to be able to move, would the engine ever start working again.

 ‘You need to turn the start key and hold it for ten seconds while pushing gently on the gas paddle.’ Roger instructed Brian when you were back in the van, sitting next to him. ‘Why couldn’t I drive again?’

‘Because it’s not your van, and you don’t know the way to the cabin.’ Brian explained, following Rogers instructions and pushing on the gas paddle.

After three tries they did indeed succeed to get it started again and you sighed relieved. You didn’t bring any food with you besides some oranges, candy and crushed sandwiches so you would have died either of the cold or starvation.

Brian started driving slowly towards the road and you noticed there were no cars, not a single one.

‘We have to get to the main road again.’ He said, turning left. ‘They probably cleared most of the snow there.’

‘How far is it to the cabin?’ You asked.

‘Just over two hundred miles, but it might take long considering the snow.’

Roger chuckled. ‘We are going to get so sick of each other, god help us.’ He spoke dramatically, then turned around in his seat.

‘Especially of you, love.’ He added, teasingly touching your cheek with his cold hands to get back at you for earlier, but it was a very weak and soft come-back.  

‘Ugh, don’t get me started.’ You replied with a smirk.

 This boy was going to be the end of you.

1. Do you like who you are? Some days more than others. I try to, but sometimes it's hard. 2. What would people say about you at your funeral? Hopefully that I was nice? A good friend? 3. What would you regret not doing in your life? Leaving things unsaid and not travelling more. 4. What’s the wisest thing you have ever heard someone say? I honestly can't think of just one. I have had some very wise teachers in my life. 5. What lessons in life did you learn to hard way? You can't trust people not to hurt you, because sometimes they will hurt you to spare themselves. 6. How often do your biggest worries and fears come true? It depends on the situation. My worries are often related to whatever I'm currently going through. 7. If you had one year left to live, what would you try to achieve? Travel loads. 8. Do you serve money or does money serve you? Neither. I am not motivated by money, but I don't have enough to say it serves me as such. 9. Are you afraid of being your true self around others? Why? Not really.
