(Lack of) Impulse Control
(Day five prompt for Woevember, created by @asouefanworkevent.)
(AO3 link is here.)
Klaus keeps quiet as he heads towards the in-bookstore café, bag in hand. While he was prone to do impulse purchases, most of the time they were limited to clothes shopping, having unexpectedly finding the perfect accessory for his usually plan outfits (mainly bowties; his fondness for them hasn’t waver over the years).
This impulse purchase though, was due to unexpectedly seeing proof of what Violet and Sunny told him weeks prior. Violet mentioned hearing the familiar name of–
SNICKET
–on her day to pick up Sunny and Beatrice from school. Sunny saw–
SNICKET
–on a list of potentially banned books at the school library. In both cases, the context of–
SNICKET
–relates to a book series. A book series that revolved around them, in the time period the three siblings agreed to be the most unfortunate phase of their lives. And it was damn fitting that the series itself was call ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ written by Lemony Snicket.
Lemony Snicket, the brother of Jacques and Kit Snicket. The man who Violet would have been name after had she been a boy. The man who was thought to be dead by Kit Snicket on her deathbed, and to the Baudelaires themselves for years since their return to the mainland.
Research told Klaus that the man had been mistaken for dead several times before—especially by The Daily Punctilio. Butthe last report of death didn’t come from that dreadful newspaper. It came from a different source, The Ace Times. However, The Ace Times mentioned how the official report couldn’t make it a proper identification; Snicket’s dental records for some unknown reason couldn’t be found for comparison. As such, there’s a fifty-fifty chance Mr. Snicket may have in fact, written the first book of the series inside Klaus’ bag: The Bad Beginning.
As Klaus approached the counter, he looked up at the menu hanging above the barista’s head. The barista gave him a nod, and spoke in a clear voice.
“Hello, sir. What can I get for you today?”
“May I get an ice coffee with whipped cream and caramel sauce, please?”
Considering his book purchase, Klaus plans to go all out with his drink today.

if you're not reading the last book of SVSSS right now do you mind me asking what you are reading? I'm just curious!
Definitely! (though I warn you, I'm fundamentally incapable of reading only one thing at a time)
For physical books, I'm currently reading The Warden by Daniel M. Ford, the novelization of My Neighbour Totoro, and trying to keep up on Dracula Daily (i am failing this)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For audiobooks, I've been relistening to The Series of Unfortunate Events (because I never actually read them all when they were originally coming out) and I juuust finished This Census-Taker by China Miéville and Ogres by Adrian Tchaikovsky this weekend. I'm about to start A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers.

I think I wouldn’t be as mad about Toei’s choices for Super if the things they overwrote wouldn’t have translated so beautifully to animation.
I have my beef with the gaps in my sense of humor and Toei’s writers room and our opinions on characterizations, sure, but so many of the cool things that happened in the manga and the movies that Toei reiterated were changed, botched, or removed completely, and that sucks.
Vegeta being so cool and so protective of his family during the Goku Black arc, and Gohan being a total badass during Ressurection F are my biggest “why did you change this??” beefs. But also man. The tournament had so many good moments in the manga that were totally snubbed in the anime.
As a fan it makes me angry but as an artist it makes me sad. Toya is such a cinematic storyteller and his pacing and compositions were just. Thrown away. :(
EDIT: Someone in the notes pointed out that the anime caught up with the manga before the GB arc so I do take back that they threw away Toya’s later work in the GB and Tournament arcs, but I will never understand why they weren’t sharing assets when they were in production at the same time. And I still can’t forgive them for fumbling the retellings of BotG and ResF so hard OTL

The spirealm as an adaptation is interesting because it manages to get the environment from the book almost perfect but changes the characters a lot, technically making it a bad adaptation. On the other hand the changes make it a much better show. Ruan Nanzhu however is perfectly consistent and that is what matters the most

I think for me the allure in base releases in persona games is how it feels cloudy and there's still mystery involved regarding how one should go about the concepts and characters introduced in the story. as inconvenient as it is, it's fun to scour different media release after, or even before, that release, to see how they tried to present these concepts and characters, how they actually came out to be, and how they decide to shape them henceforth, adding on to what was already introduced and simply building on it, or topping on details that probably weren't obvious in the initial release, or something they wanted to be more prominent to evoke a more specific image of those ideas.
it's fun to look at famitsu magazines and decipher what those game teasers were all about. it's exciting to read through novels or listen to drama tracks to look a new perspectives of the same story, or even look beyond it. the art book gets released and youre looking through creator comments and concept art and deciding whether to agree to these ideas and decisions or not
but when the re-releases came, golden and royal for me, the whole charm of the game was wiped away and just became too... saturated. the eerieness of bright eye searing yellow wasn't eerie anymore, it just look more mellow and hopeful. from fog and static, theres sub and glitter. which is I guess what they were pretty much going for, when they decided to try out a new technique to draw an audience in. the red and white and black gave a monochrome outlook to the player's worldview, and the flashy and chaotic elements of the ui and other game design made it feel like you were breaking out of the off camera elements that felt too limiting, too controlling and tame, yet dark. now, the flashiness felt like too much sugar in a dessert meant to be a bit more bittersweet. there's a new meaning of rebellion vs control considering how yal's prominence in the plot was completely overshadowed with what az had going on.
I guess what in trying to say in the end is that both the base releases and re-releases have their own charm and can be enjoyed in different ways and through different perspectives. it just makes me a little sad to see how these concepts and characters shrouded with mystery and aching to be uncovered, which is what intrigued me in the first place, were just... stripped naked entirely. you look under the sheets torn off by the people that wanted more people to look at these creations and you see that it wasn't even the same thing underneath. it feels like they stuffed all the things people could like than retaining what these things had that people already like, it's just that they didn't realize they liked it in the first place. their insides were mangled and now their outsides were prettied up as well. all this mystery and intrigue I once found were just blank spaces filled in by someone else rather than the audience themselves
yosuke's closeted nature, kanji's relationship with his own orientation, naoto's own identity and representation. even chie's tomboyism and teddie's malleable inhuman body. and even outside of that, there's adachi, another label slapped on him and exaggerated only the traits that would make him more marketable to an active market that wants to be spoonfed to fill their egos and say they're right. and I sit here looking over all that had happened to realize these writers are not as sincere as they could seem. it's a big project after all, and there's too many people looking over your shoulder.
and the nature of fandom itself, I suppose. if there's mystery and intrigue pressured by audience reaction profit, then then fog shrouding them would dissipate and theres no fun looking through the unknown anymore

actually yeah im making a quick poll on this. for anyone who has been around long enough to remember when i made my massive clamp readathon situation (in which i read every single one of the works they put out) be everyones problem. hi. im doing it again but much worse now. reading about 400 volumes (and more if i can find more) of tezuka osamu's work. i am just curious on the general consensus of if i should upload thoughts as i read each one (ie: one post being like i finished kimba/jungle kingdom, heres my thoughts) or just have a MASSIVE post of hey. read them all heres my thoughts (as i did with clamp. which is when i found out tumblr had a max text limit)
#twist rambles#i KNOW this is smth most of u do not care about. however comma. im curious what would be better. esp as like... about 50?? i think percent#of these have no translation fan or official. so its smth where i think discussing the plot/characters/art or whatever could be fun :)#but its also like. obviously a lot. for comparison the clamp stuff was abt 90 volumes (half of them being holic and trc). so this is far#worse. i could read all of naruto 5.5 times over in the time this will take me to complete it. so its smth where i do want to like... get#opinions on. either way i dont plan on liveblogging for most of it other than if i find a silly panel (the really good mw panels u will#ALWAYS be famous <- i post them every time i read i think. theyre very good to me). i do however plan on coloring a panel or page from each#series as my OWN personal way of having a physical way of holding onto my memories w it. sorry this is so long and rambly but im gearing up#for this massive project and by god i need to get ppl to read dor.oro. <- my goal or something. please. its very good.#tzkposting#<- all of my posting abt this will/has been under this tag so its not... in the main tags lmao.#sorry for the rambling but. hi. please vote :3 im making a big spreadsheet for stuff bc like... a lot of his stuff is hard to source so onc#im done w that nightmare situation ill probably post that somewhere bc the days of work ive done on all this should be put out there lol#gonna srb this a few times through the day to get like... an idea of what ppl would prefer :)

Okay, NOTHING OFFICIAL, but there's kind of an idea lurking in my mind to describe the next "morning" in the "A Night Trip" fic.
I left a hint that Keith might forget everything that happened at night and I would like to experiment with that...
