seeing the live action astrid now and her design is really pissing me off ESPECIALLY after this post.

Ive come around a lot on Nico Parker, I actually think shes looks so much like Astrid in the face but what the hell is with her design in the la ??

Astrid in the la has TWO BRAIDS I mean fine maybe its not that important but that completely debunks everything said in the post above, I think. Like Astrid having two braids is saved until she has children TWO children because thats what they represent. Or maybe they dont and its just hair and it was never that deep idk fuck me ig.

i think the thing that pisses me off most with her design is the RED 😭 WHY IS SHE WEARING RED ? again, maybe its just some clothes and its not that deep but i always thought Astrid wears blue in movie 1 because thats HER colour

then she wears red in movie 2 BECAUSE THATS HICCUPS COLOUR AND IT SHOWS HER SWITCH AND HER CONNECTION TO HICCUP and ITS SO CUTE its like hiccup having the deadly nadder symbol over his heart - theyre subtle designs to show they belong to each other, that theyre always with each other despite spending most of httyd 2 separated

and then in httyd 3 she wears BOTH colours, like her hair, shes come full circle and is comfortable being independent and herself but also being hiccups girlfriend.

NO. YOU KNOW WHAT? ITS MORE THAN JUST HAIR AND CLOTHES. ITS STORYTELLING. And its one of my favourite characters developments in media purely because of how subtle it is but it makes all the difference.

oh and not to mention her wearing blue is supposed to foreshadow stormfly, just like other riders. And you might say “but Astrid does wear blue in the movie, at the end” but she shouldnt be wearing red in one of her most important scenes, where we are first fully introduced to her because Astrid’s associated colour is BLUE. The same way that black and red or green and brown is associated with hiccup. if we dont associate her with blue, we dont associate her with stormfly.

but whatever. maybe I’m giving the original franchise too much credit…

I don't see anyone talking about how they showed Astrid's character development through her hair so I'm going to.

In HTTYD 1 we get this very emo lookin cut. Since the first movie is told through Hiccup's POV, it matches how he sees her: unapproachable, scary, and tough. Even the back of her hair, it's tied up tightly to show her uptight and no-nonsense attitude.

But after she sees Hiccup for who he is, she pushes her hair out of her eye so he can see her entire face. Almost like she's "letting him in", if not to be cliché. He gets to look her in the eyes when he talks to her, whereas before he avoided her stare.

Then we get to RTTE and her fringe is shorter and doesn't completely cover her eye as much. Her hair is much softer, showing how she herself has softened (preferring capture over kill missions as she says). And the back of her hair is looser and bounces about the place.

In HTTYD 2, there's not a huge change because RTTE happens pretty close to the second film but her hair is on the side now. You could take this as her being less uptight and war obsessed because a braid on the side isn't very practical for battle but she's a lot more relaxed about it now. Edit: also there hasn't been as much war in the last 5 years than there was before HTTYD 1 so choosing aesthetic over function is a lot easier to do. She doesn't have to sacrifice her beauty anymore for the sake of fighting.

And in HTTYD 3, her fringe is out of her face and her hair is fully let down. She's relaxed and comfortable with her femininity as well that she's so toned back from how angry she used to be in HTTYD 1 like she said, "I'm the person I am today because of you," - it really shows the effect her relationship with Hiccup has had on her. That he's made her comfortable to embrace her feminine side.

(side note, her hair in HTTYD 3 was gorgeous)

And you could even say her marital braids represent Zephyr and Nuffink.

I've just always loved how they showed her change through her hair, it's such a cool and subtle way to do something like that. And of course, it's beautiful 😁
