I just saw you were taking prompts. I don't know the themes for the week, but how about a bit of comedy up in here. Kallura (side of plance), where Acxa is actually their daughter from the future. This crack headcanon has been in my head for days now.
A/N: I decided to make this a continuation of this other drabble where Allura is jealous of Acxa and Keith. It’ll make more sense if you read the other drabble first. Thank you @kentaruhinaka for waiting patiently!
“What happened? Is everything ok?” Hunk asked.
“Who knows, maybe? Yes? Remind me to never fall for someoneif it makes you crazy like that.” Pidge shook her head as she took a seat nextto Lance.
“Oh please, you’re gonna crush on someone someday and it’sgoing to totally wreck you before you even realize it’s happening.” Lanceteased as he mussed her hair playfully.
Pidge looked up at him, at his irritatingly cute smile, andhuffed before turning to the fire, hoping it was the flames making her cheeksburn. She snatched up a stick and stoked the fire.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about” she grumbled.
“Are they ok?” Acxa blurted out suddenly.
She’d stayed quiet during the entire ordeal starting withAllura snipping at Keith around the campfire to them excusing themselves totalk privately. While everyone else was chatting or pretending to absolutelynot be eavesdropping on the argument, she was staring at the spot where’d they’dsnuck off to rather intently and the louder they seemed to get the morefrequently her eyes would dart to her hand on her knee which unbeknownst toanyone else, was subtly fading in and out.
“Hmm?” Pidge looked up from the fire.
“Are they ok?” Acxa asked again a bit more persistently.
“Yeah,” she shrugged, not sure why the ex-general seemed tocare so much, “they were saying some mushy stuff before I walked away.”
“Oh thank god” she sighed with relief.
Everyone turned and looked at her strangely.
“I just mean…it’s good that everyone is getting along.” Sheshifted uncomfortably.
“Well since all’s well that ends well I’m ready to hit thehay.” Lance yawned.
“Same!” Hunk followed with an even bigger yawn.
“Yeah I’m beat, let’s call it a night guys.” Shiro chimedin.
“Should we tell them we’re going to bed?” Romelle askedpointing to where Keith and Allura had gone off to.
“Better not, they could be doing lord knows what now that it’sgotten quiet back there.”
“Like what?” Romelle asked with naïve curiosity, eyesblinking.
“He’s probably givin’ her the ol’ razzle dazzle!” Lanceperked his eyebrows before snatching Pidge in his arms.
“Oh princess kiss me before I get extra emo!” Lance deepenedhis voice as he mocked Keith, dipping Pidge and frantically nuzzling his facein her cheek while making exaggerated kissing noises.
Pidge’s face went red, redder than the red lion red, codered red, atomic red. His face had moved to her neck which sent a sharp tingledown her spine.
“G-g-g-get off me you dork!” She tried to push him away.
“Oh Keith!” His voice suddenly jumped to a higher octivewith a fake British accent. “The Marmora can go on without you but my loins, myheaving bosom, they cannot! Make love to me you mulleted fool!”
“Lance!” Pidge screeched as he picked her up and spun heraround.
“This is so exciting what happens next?!” Romelle clappedwith wide bright eyes.
“What happens next is we all go to bed before you scar usall for life.” Shiro rubbed his temples.
“I don’t know if I’m happy or worried that my son has youall as friends” Krolia’s forehead creased with concern.
“You know your acting has improved, perhaps I should havehad you play the princess during The Voltron Show” Coran said thoughtfully.
Lance winked while popping a signature finger gun.
“I’m a man of many talents.”
“Including making me sick.” Hunk joked.
“Ouch!” Lance retorted which clutching his heart.
They continued to tease each other as they walked towardtheir lions. Pidge was left standing there, still a flustered blushing mess. She patted her cheeks, trying to calm herself when she noticed Acxa was stillstanding there staring at her.
“What?” Pidge blurted out a tad accusingly.
“Nothing.” Acxa smiled knowingly.
“That isn’t what you think it is” she stated adamantly.
“And what do I think it is?” the Galra woman asked.
“He just caught me off guard that’s all! I don’t actually…Imean I would never…with him…like that.”
“Mhm.”
“I wouldn’t!”
“Of course.” Acxa nodded as she rose to her feet. “Wellgoodnight then.”
“Goodnight.” Pidge was still a little on edge and quicklystomped off to her lion.
Axca waited until Pidge was out of sight to look at her handagain. Everything seemed to be back to normal and she took a deep breath as sheclenched it into a fist to confirm its solidity. She thought maybe she shouldcheck on Keith and Allura but thought the better of it and went back to hertent.
She plopped down on her makeshift cot and looked around thetiny space decorated with what little belongings she had. She lifted up therolled up fabrics she’d made into a pillow and pulled out the worn, slightlycrumpled photo underneath. There was just enough light seeping in from thedwindling fire outside to make out each person, although she’d looked at thispicture a million times and could have described it in her sleep.
An air strip. Garrison in the background. A large Alteanship. A group in the foreground. A very old Iverson. Pidge and Lance inuniform, their two twin toddlers in regular civilian clothes. Keith looked important, like a knight…or perhaps a king. His physical appearance was a bit different, moreGalran. His arm was around Allura. She looked elegant.
And in her arms a baby…
Tiny…beautiful…violet skin with a small tuft of dark hair, eyes the perfect mix of blue and purple.
She’ll grow up hearing how pretty her ears are from her mamawhile she pinches said ears while placing raspberry like kisses on her cheeks.
She’ll get her first dagger from her papa when she’s far tooyoung to even have one, to her mama’s aggravation.
War will prove nothing is certain and a very irritating caterpillar-likealien will put it in her mind that there are a million possibilities and she’llhave to go back to make sure the two people she loves the most don’t screw itall up.
“I wish you two would just admit you love each other alreadyso I don’t have to keep worrying about ceasing to exist” Acxa muttered toherself with a smile as she ran her fingers over their faces.
“Idiots” she added with a chuckle.
Meanwhile Keith and Allura finally took themselves to bed,Allura’s bed in the blue lion specifically. He rubbed her bare back as he heldher, using his fingers to trace the additional Altean markings on her skin asthey faintly glowed in the dark. She rested her head on his chest listening tothe sounds of his beating heart, the way he breathed. Their clothes were in apile on the floor.
“Are you sure it’s…y’know, ok that we…?”
“Yes, fertility cycles, alien stuff, you’re fine.”
“Whew.”
“Not ready to be a father yet?” Allura giggled.
“I can barely get you guys to listen to me let alone a kid.”
“Well I think you’d be a wonderful father, someday of course.”
“Someday.”
There’s a long pause.
“Keith Jr. is a good strong name though” he joked.
Allura laughed.
“And what about you, do you want kids someday?” Keith asked.
“I think so, when the time is right, once we’ve been able tobring peace to the universe.”
“That sounds like a tall order.”
“It is but I believe we can do it. I want my daughter toexist in a time of harmony.”
“Daughter huh?”
“Yes, I’d love a girl,” Allura smiled to herself, “beautiful, strong, smart, independent with a name that reflects her strength and grace. Perhapsa name that starts with an ‘A’.” There was a playful arrogance in her voice.
“Hmm,” Keith sighed contentedly as he held her closer, “thatcould be nice…”

someone posted pictures of fc options and had a poll at the bottom for people to choose who they would rather see and whew ! they all voted for the white fcs whose faces were obstructed in the photos over the black fcs whose faces you could see clearly and this wasn’t some keith powers/harry styles poll literally all the fcs were underused. that made me feel like deadass anytime i wanna play a black fc they’re gonna hate them and run to the whites.. still gonna do it tho
that’s so wtf .... but like I KNOW. i feel the same. black fcs esp black women get ignored soooo much like if ur not playing one of the v few black faces that are popular ur just gonna get ignored n it’s so upsetting bc like ion wanna play a white just to feel included ( even tho i do sometimes kjdsfhlkdjfgh ) but yea keep playing them honey !!! n just keep clowning the whites anytime they start actin outta pocket.

Well, it’s been a year. Truly. I haven’t blogged in a year! Not since my EPIK return to Korea (wink at y’all English teachers over there) for MinShik & Ara’s wedding.
And here those same people are celebrating their one year anniversary by having their first baby ON THAT DAY. That’s some Gattaca-level skill, I tell ya.
Lots has changed. LAWD. Yes. Grab yourself a low-carb snack because y’all about to get the deets.
Jobs
Two promotions at Grubhub and a sabbatical-turned-bowing-out at Titan Gym ALL IN THIS PAST ONE YEAR.
In January I became a Senior Sales Executive with Grubhub; it was a huge, out-of-the-blue honor and when I asked ‘what’s different than my current job?” my boss replied “Its what you’re already doing with the team, I’m just going to pay you for it.” How cool is that?!
Actual photo of said boss:
Seriously one of my favorite things in my career was in our first ever one on one development meeting last year (right *after* the Korea trip) the first thing I said was “I want you to know I’m in grad school for training and development and that’s what I want to do long term.”
His reply? “OK, let me hook you up with the right person who’s heading up training.” Literally the next week she got me in a classroom training new hires in a session 1x every 2 weeks. MONEY/MOUTH AND ALL THAT. When does that happen?!
And this past April when a new role opened up to become a sales trainer for new hires he recommended and she championed me for the role, which started May 1.
Y’all. I have never felt the Conan mantra of “If you work really hard and you’re kind, amazing things will happen” more. I joined Grubhub just to get a sales paycheck and have a regular schedule to pursue my passions and here this place that I thought would be a job I wasn’t going to put my heart into has given me such gifts. Managers that believe in me and CREATE JOBS that I wasn’t even aware of. I’m very blessed.
Now I’m the “Learning Solutions Associate” (ie. Non-Corporate Sales & Account Advisor Trainer) for all employees in those departments for Grubhub Inc. Nationwide. I’ve trained over 75 people in the last 5.5 months. That is bananas to me and I’m so grateful. All that in a year and a half at this company.
Because of that role shift and wrapping up grad school I knew that my time at Titan Gym was coming to a close. I have loved and sweated and bled and cried in that place – sometimes all at once – and I leave with so many good memories and relationships. I felt like I couldn’t be both throwing my heart (and fists) into learning & teaching Krav while also trying to originate a role at Grubhub.
So with a final rooftop drinking session and countless hugs I left (by choice) no longer an instructor at Titan Gym. I’m still a certified Krav Maga Level 1 Instructor through KMA and I know if I’m ever interested in getting back into it that Daniela and Ivo have my back. And if you need a place to kick ass, feel stronger or find mental toughness I will recommend Titan Gym to the moon and back again and again and again.
WHEW.
2. School
Yes, I finished my grad program at University of Wisconsin – Stout and now have my graduate certificate in Instructional Design. I need to frame that fancy piece of paper sometime soon.
3. Comedy
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE LAUGH SQUAD?! Oh man y’all. So last October in the week after I got back from Korea I auditioned for a ComedySportz House Team and was cast into the most perfect circle of weirdos by two insanely talented coaches who happened to have the exact same initials – HMS. So naturally our team name became “Pinafore” after the famous Gilbert & Sullivan comic opera ‘HMS Pinafore.’ I have still never to this day heard any music from it although I did briefly glance through the Wikipedia page.
No, I didn’t realize we were all serving fierce face. Or at least my genre of fierce face. Our team just had our final show on 10/6 and it has been a journey. I feel like I’ve grown with such a great team with depth and tears and joy. I have peed myself a little laughing so hard, which I can admit now that the team is done. I mean, I could have admitted it before but why BOTHER.
Truly I have loved the CSZ House Program; auditions for the next round are in November and I’m excited to see what the next group of people I get to fall in love with looks like!
Other things I’ve been blessed to yuk it up on/with: I got cast into a RIFF Music Improv camp which has had me perform 3x with a stone-cold group of short-form music improvisers that HAVE PIPES, y’all. Some of these people I’ve watched perform for years in music improv and it’s an honor to strap on a Britney mic and make up songs for an audience with them.
I’ve also done 2 seasons of MINt (Music Improv Night) at the Annoyance; such an open space to trying weird and beautiful things with music improv and our voices. If you’re looking for a community to fall in love with, the MINt crew is a good one. 4 teams every 4 months and you get such a wide range of experience, skills and strange, hilarious songs.
There’s been a few one-offs performing with friends’ groups and even a couple shows with some MI people I met in iO’s Music Program as an indie group named “AirBRB.”
I’m moving into a season when I’m not sure when my next show is; it’ll be light this next month, which is kind of a fun thing. I’ll miss it. But I think it’s healthy to have a breather and come back hungry, whenever the next show is. And you never know when someone might text you at 4pm about a show that night at 1030pm and you gotta be ready to make believe with the best!
4. Health
OOOOOHHHH fun. Let’s talk about it! Since last year when I got my Krav Maga instructor cert in July (shoutout to the 3am Protein Squad) I’ve let things slip a bit. And why not?! When you survive that kind of thing you deserve to let yourself chill. But…I didn’t really reign it in. I was doing ok; maintaining some cardio but I knew things needed to step up. I was getting a little burned out on Krav. Here’s my 7am face on the way to teach class:
I let myself write excuses and they added up. Once I was done punching/kicking regularly I did CrossFit for a few months – it was great and ya girl loves heavy weights – but the price was really high. Especially when I could be going out of town to our Phoenix office for work up to once a month, missing a week at a time. It was an expensive habit.
So I jumped back into going to LSAC (Lincoln Square Athletic Club) regularly – it’s been 3 weeks in and I’m kind of loving my schedule:
Mondays – Pole Class at Brass Ring (I KNOW) and it’s so fun. Such an empowering environment and an hour flies by. Its slow but I see progress! And thigh bruises.
Tuesdays – Workout at LSAC (trying to follow the schedule Brian (see Fridays) gave me the week before)
Wednesdays – Volleyball with friends at LPHS – y’all we had a double header last week and I burned 1,448 calories in 1 hour and 55 mins. WE WORKIN’.
Thursdays – Improv Day (aka rest and do some make believe in comedy class)
Fridays – Personal Training with Brian at LSAC
Saturdays – Yoga (at home right now using an Apple TV app but maybe at LSAC in the future)
Sundays – Intro to Olympic Weightlifting with Keith at LSAC (today was the first one; I did a 65lb bar snatch from shins to above my head! 9 times! Y’ALL! SHE BACK!)
Also I started attempting/doing a Keto & intermittent fasting on 10/1; it’s been a little rough but we’re getting into the groove of it. That first week, candidly, sucked. The low carb/Keto flu thing is for real. But now I’m used to it; the 12-8 fasting part is honestly not that hard now. Very manageable. It’s more the carb counting thing of keto that is taking slow (but progressive) shape.
5. The Rest
a. Photography
I know everyone has a camera in their smartphone – I’m doing some photography learning – I bought myself a Canon T6i DSLR last year RIGHT BEFORE starting grad school so I hid it in the closet from myself until school was done in May. I’ve taken some pictures I’m proud of and I’m working my way through a couple Lynda.com (grad school got me a free account) photography courses to learn the camera. I’m a student of it right now for sure but here’s a few photos I’m proud of:
b. Norway
I found out last year that I’m 1/8 Norweigan; that doesn’t sound like ‘a lot’ but honestly I’ve never really thought about it. I generally classify my heritage as ‘SPF 75’ but have always known our family is generally German with some crossover to other classically pale squads (Irish, probably English, other various tribes of roving wild-haired people on/around Hadrian’s wall, etc).
Last year in October someone posted in this Women of Chicago Comedy Facebook group I’m in about a Norwegian TV show that 1. Flies you to Norway and 2. You good-naturedly compete with other Norwegian-Americans to win $50,000. SO I APPLIED OF COURSE and got to ask my mom and grandparents questions over iMessage about my heritage. Apparently one of my great-grandmas was first-generation American, born in the US. Her parents both emigrated from Norway in the early 1900s to Washington State, near Ballard. So…if one of the 8 people that made me is full-blooded Norwegian…then by the power of Punnett Squares or whatever that means I’m 1/8 Norwegian, right?
ANYWAYS I did not get cast but I just realized they’re auditioning again so I’m going to throw ye olde application back in there. 1. Because it sounds fun and 2. Norway is GORGEOUS and 3. I did promise Neal Carlin that I would apply again. He’s gone in Italy doing an insanely cool apprenticeship so the least I can do is fill out info about my LIFE.
Our family doesn’t really do any celebrations of heritage. My great-grandma Harriman (she of the Norwegian blood) made lefse for Christmas, but I never really understood the connection as a kid. She passed when I was in high school and none of us kids ever learned to make it with her. Also, keep your traps shut but my real goal if I get on this show is to learn to make Fattigman cookies and then make them with my Nana for Christmas. KEEP MY SECRETS, INTERNET.
I think there’s a real beauty in appreciating where you came from and knowing you are a part of a legacy of choices – good ones, bad ones, ones that had to be made one way or another – and then choosing how you want your part of the story to be written. Sitting under the Northern lights and walking on glaciers would be a pretty jaw-dropping moment in life; 10/10 I’d be crying frozen little tears of joy. So we’ll see! I’m applying!
c. Travel
I’m going to DC in less than 2 weeks – I’ve never been to DC AND I haven’t seen David Brown in 4+ years in person. That’s bananas to me. I genuinely cannot believe that there’s not some time/space blanket fold that I jumped through because it CAN’T have been four years.
But the internet says it has. So myself, Bekah, Adam & Dana (plus maybe their dog Millie) are all meeting up with David in DC October 25-27 and I could SQUEAL I am so excited.
I went to Ohio in March just to see my loves Xander and Trace and get drag-ified myself. I learned that clip on earrings are the reason beauty = pain and that stick on nails are NOT for me. But I looked great.
d. Experiences
I saw my first Broadway shows in the past year – I don’t know what took me so long! I saw Hello Dolly, Book of Mormon, Hamilton. Les Mis, Falsettos – I WANT TO SING EVERYTHING.
I went to the Shedd Aquarium on Thanksgiving – it was BEAUTIFUL and uncrowded and my ticket was free – cue v v thankful.
I saw Conan O’Brien’s show in Chicago and met Aaron Bleyart, who’s blog(s) I have followed for over TEN YEARS.
Passed my Krav Level 3 student test and Muay Thai Level 2!
Survived the Polar Vortex in Chicago when it was over -20 degrees below zero. This is the *inside* of my windows.
My parents came to Chicago for Father’s Day! The umbrella is my Mom hiding from the camera as all 3 of us eat Chicago Dogs outside the Field Museum. Also, I went to the Field Museum.
I went to Arizona 3 times – February, May & August – for work and to visit family. What a cool, weird mix of colors. I saw the Grand Canyon and cried a little behind my sunglasses as my family pretended to not notice.
I saw a Seattle-based artist, SYML, who’s work I love not once but TWICE. Also saw Dean Lewis at the same concert and fell in love w his new album.
Saw a bajillion improv shows, learned which lipsticks look good on my skin tone and saw so many people I love.
What. A. Year.
More updates, more often, from this face:
A Blog I Pay For and Rarely Update: UPDATED! Well, it's been a year. Truly. I haven't blogged in a year! Not since my EPIK return to Korea (wink at y'all English teachers over there) for MinShik & Ara's wedding.

Take One Day - Lance Bday Week Day 2: Friends
Whew, made it! Another late-night write from me, haha. This is a follow-up to my drabble for yesterday’s prompt, and it turned out... a lot longer than I expected, to be honest! I thought it was just going to be another really short drabble, but nope. 1.5k words, and I managed not to make it very angst-full.
Being a paladin of Voltron is a 24/7 job. Lance was never prepared for something like that, but he does like to think that he’s adapted to it pretty well.
So he’s surprised and pleased when Allura announces that, now that they have finished their negotiations with the latest planet to join the Voltron Alliance, they will be taking a day to rest on the planet’s surface.
They all fly down in the lions - Lance makes some joking complaints when Allura and Coran go with Shiro, but he isn’t really bothered by it. He proceeds to spend the brief trip down to the planet making more jokes. Blue goes at cruising speed, a nice change of pace from her usual swiftness as she charges a Galra ship or heads into a wormhole. It means that Lance has the opportunity to look out at the planet, but he doesn’t, because he has video feeds of everyone else up on a screen and busies himself trading cheesy puns with Pidge and Hunk. He even manages to make Keith laugh once, and he thinks Shiro cracks a smile somewhere in the middle of the pun war.
When they land, Lance takes his time exiting Blue. After all, it’s their ‘day off’. He thinks it’s justifiable for him to be a little slower than usual. That means that when he strolls out of Blue’s mouth, everyone else is already finished with being in awe of the place where they’re spending their day. It leaves them free to grin at Lance’s reaction to seeing a beach, an ocean, the shore lined by strange alien trees. The water is bluer than most on Earth, but Lance has seen water of a similar shade before, so it doesn’t phase him. He whoops excitedly and punches the air above his head.
Hunk grins at him. “I thought you’d be excited! Didn’t you look at this place before we came, or on the way down?”
Lance shakes his head, unable to wipe the smile off his face. “This is amazing,” he says. Then his smile finally fades. “Wait, I’m going to need to go get my swimsuit from the castle - no, really wait, the water is safe, right?”
Hunk laughs. “Coran apparently brought everything. I guess Alteans know the concept of a beach day. And yeah, the water’s fine!”
It takes Lance a matter of minutes to sprint to Coran to retrieve everything he needs, find a hidden spot to change, and zoom back to the beach. He’s the first one back - except for Coran, of course, who never fails to somehow move at the speed of light or something - and so Coran turns to him quickly. “Lance, my boy! Take this.” A transparent thing is shoved into Lance’s hands. Lance gives it, and then Coran, a blank stare.
Coran makes a motion like he’s holding binoculars up to his eyes. “It’s for seeing underwater! It took me forever to find them in the storerooms, but I thought we would need them today.”
Lance’s jaw drops and then he gives Coran another huge grin. “This is amazing!” He tries and fails to put on the Altean goggles. Coran helps him after a moment. They feel weird for a second, but Lance gets used to it quickly.
“They even help you see in darker waters,” Coran says cheerfully. “Wonderful little piece of technology, although not used as often as they should be!”
“Well, they’re getting some use today!” Lance rocks back and forth on his heels, and then looks around. “Where is everyone else? They’re taking ages.”
He is unceremoniously tackled to the ground by Pidge at that exact moment, barely avoiding getting a mouthful of the pink sand. “Take that back!” Pidge crows, sitting on his back. “I only took ages because I was preparing for my stealth attack.”
Lance is too happy to care about the stealth attack. He heaves himself onto his hands and knees, knocking off a still-laughing and triumphant Pidge. “Race you to the water, Pidgey!” he yells, taking off. Pidge follows him with a shout about how he got a head start.
Hunk and Keith join them in the water a few minutes later, followed soon enough by Shiro and Allura, and then eventually even Coran joins them in a giant splash battle. Everyone but Lance retreats back to the beach for a few minutes after that, and Lance takes advantage of the calmer moment to tug his Altean goggles down over his eyes. Inhaling deeply, he plunges under the waves, powerful kicks propelling him along as he skims by just above the sand. He’s missed this so much, the feeling of water all around him and people he loves nearby.
Lance spots something on the sand just ahead of him, and his scavenger’s instincts from all his beach trips back on Earth kick in, leading to him scooping up the item and heading to the surface for a moment to get a better look at it. It’s a stone, smoothed by the water, white and black blending together nearly seamlessly in a spiral. It’s gorgeous. Lance finds a pocket in his swimsuit and tucks it in, and wonders if any other treasures are lurking under the surface, waiting for him.
Time passes. Everyone else comes into the water sometimes, either to cool off (the planet’s sun is strong) or to have fun. Lance stays in the water almost constantly. It’s comforting and familiar-feeling, and he keeps finding cool things.
Finally he hears Shiro calling out to him, and he reluctantly heads back to the beach, walking out of the waves and stretching slowly. “Are we leaving?” he asks, feeling his heart sink a little bit.
Shiro nods. “Sorry, but we have to get back to the castle. It’s starting to get dark out.” Lance hadn’t really noticed. “You’re not tired?” Shiro asks, laughing a little. “You’ve been in the water nonstop.”
“Nah, I’m a swimmer. I’m happiest in the water!”
Shiro smiles at Lance’s enthusiasm. “Maybe we can come back sometime.”
Lance smiles hopefully. “You really think so?”
At a nod from Shiro, Lance’s small smile grows. “Oh, almost forgot!” he exclaims, and he dashes over to where he left his jacket, grabbing Pidge’s orange phone-like gadget from a pocket. “Guys, get over here!”
With everyone gathered behind him, Lance adds one more picture to the multiple photos he’s taken over the day: everyone on the beach, smiling, the sun glowing on their faces and the weird alien trees behind them.
The trip back to the Castle is a little bittersweet. Lance holds close the idea that they may come back sometime.
As everyone is stepping out of the lions, Lance calls everyone over again. “Close your eyes,” he says, “and hold out your hands.”
They all follow his instructions, Allura and Pidge looking suspicious, Hunk and Coran excited, Keith curious, Shiro hesitant. Lance fishes from his pockets the things he found over the course of the day, and hands them out one by one. “Okay, eyes open,” he eventually instructs.
Everyone opens their eyes in the same moment, and there are mixed sounds of appreciation, confusion, and happiness. “A rock for Shiro that made me think of his hair,” Lance says with a smirk in Shiro’s direction - Shiro chuckles and runs his fingers through the white tuft. His hair really does look like the rock, the first thing Lance found. “Some sort of alien bird feather for Pidge; I think it’s waterproof. Keith, that scale is kinda sharp, careful - I don’t know what it’s from, but I thought it was cool. Hunk, that wood came from one of the weird trees, I think. The color matches. Coran, you’ve got one of my best finds, it’s some kinda fossil! And Allura… I know you got really excited about sparkly stuff and then couldn’t go to the space mall. I’m hoping that that’s sparkly enough - the stone shimmers if you look at it the right way.”
There are still a few confused looks, so Lance explains himself. “I’ve always found cool stuff on the beach in the past. I thought that it might be nice to have some souvenirs.”
He gets thanked by everyone, multiple times over by Hunk, Coran, and Allura especially. Keith waits until almost everyone has headed out to thank him, his voice quiet and serious, the words accompanied by a rare smile. Pidge thanks Lance enthusiastically, probably thinking about trying to figure out what the feather came from. Shiro’s thanks are brief, but heartfelt.
When he’s back in his room after a shower, sprawled out on his bed, Lance looks across the dim space at a shelf. On it sit a few holo-renderings of photos with the other paladins and Allura and Coran, his piece of driftwood from home, and now a spiny fin from an unknown sea creature, today’s addition. He feels more at home in the castle in this moment than he ever has before. If he didn’t know better, Lance would find it amazing that one day could make him feel so different about being in space. But being who he is, knowing the power of single moments of happiness, he’s just grateful that he had the day to spend with his friends. He’s happy to have them here with him. “One day,” he says quietly, “maybe we’ll all do this together, back on Earth.”

Opening Bell: August 14th, 2018
First, some personal news: I bought some new sweatpants. I guess technically they’re called “joggers,” but I’ll be damned if I’ll ever use that term.
Whew, okay, now that we’re past that awkward bit of housekeeping, let’s get to some links.
“I’M MAHK WAHLBERG AN I THINK THIS NEW ‘OSCAH FUH POPULAH MOVIES’ THING IS A FACKIN GREAT IDEAR! MY PAL BUMBLEBEE WOULDA ALREADY WON A COUPLE A BEST SUPPOAHTIN’ ACTAH STATUES IF HOLLYWOOD WEREN’T FULLAH PUSSIES!”
A badass goat led a mass farm-animal escape. The goat will be played by Mark Wahlberg in the blockbuster film about these events.
This is a good read about the poisoning of an ex-Russian spy and his daughter in England.
Minnesota Representative Keith Ellison is being accused of domestic abuse.
(I couldn’t come up with a picture to fit this link, so I went with this photo showing irrefutable evidence of the existence of Champ, the monster lurking beneath the waves of Lake Champlain.)
A 14-year-old is legitimately running for Governor of Vermont.

21-Day Challenge Winners, Our Favorite Big-Ass Salads, and Other Highlights
Hard to be believe just three weeks ago we began this summer Challenge. Over the last three weeks, people shared their individual goals, wins, questions, and stumbling blocks in our comment boards, on the Vimify app, and in the Facebook groups. As always, I’ve loved the energy of it and appreciated hearing from folks who may not share as frequently. It’s good to know you’re here, and I hope you keep coming back.
I’m excited today to share our contest winners—including our Grok pose champ, our Big Ass salad winner, and, yes, our Grand Prize taker below. And the winners are…
The people have spoken, and the winning Grok Pose of 2018 belongs to Sam Poland. Congratulations, Sam, and thanks to everyone who submitted their photos this year. I have to say, this remains my favorite contest, and I love the creativity behind it.

And now on to this year’s randomly chosen winner for the Big-Ass Salad Contest…. Congratulations to Bekah—and the dog who apparently also enjoys a good salad.
I accidentally burned the bacon in my BLT salad. I keep grossing out thinking I’m seeing pieces of over ripe spinach in there, but it’s actually the blackened bacon. Whew! Bad greens are gross but burned bacon is still bacon! @marksdailyapple @primalkitchenfoods #primalreset #bas

We received a lot of entries for this one, and I’d be remiss if I didn’t share a few more. Consider them BAS goals—and maybe a little inspiration for today’s lunch.

A head of lettuce a day keeps the hunger away. Summer heat always makes eating salad easier, but what do you put on the salad so it’s not boring AF?! Today’s salad includes a head of romaine, a Persian cucumber, avocado, shredded cabbage, tuna, and lemon juice and evoo. I added a bit of salt and pepper. I’m on Day 3 of a 21 day primal reset because even coaches need a reminder. Every time I do this I learn something new about my own nutritional needs and health habits. And I also learn from others in the group. I’ll be leading my own challenge this July, which will include specific steps on moving away from calorie counting and excessive/chronic cardio to a healthy lifestyle that is sustainable. I’ll teach you about primal principles, which include play, functional movement, eating healthy fats, and getting sufficient sleep/rest, and more! If you’ve thought about going #Keto this is a great program that will build a foundation so you can do Keto the right way and experience the benefits instead of quitting it after a few days. You must be fat adapted to do keto right! If you’re like me, juggling a million things living the life you want, you want food and activity to be PART of your lifestyle, not a disruption. Workouts should fit seamlessly into your day. And food decisions shouldn’t be stressful or too time consuming. DM me if you’re interested and I’ll be sure to let you know when the program opens up. #primalhealthcoach #primalreset #21dayreset #bigasssalad

Jay-Z Calls Gov. Walz To Demand Justice For George Floyd, Attorney General Keith Ellison Takes Over Case + Don Lemon Calls Out Oprah, Drake & More To Take Action!
Jay-Z called up Minnesota Governor Tim Walz to demand justice for George Floyd. Following their conversation, Gov. Walz announced attorney general Keith Ellison (a black man) will now take over the case. Also, CNN’s Don Lemon called out Oprah, Drake, Tyler Perry & more to take action amid the nationwide protests. Everything inside…
Jay-Z is using his resources and platform to make change.
Yesterday, the Hip Hop mogul had a phone conversation with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz to demand justice for the killing of George Floyd, the Minneapolis man the world watch die in a viral video where a white police officer – Derek Chauvin – kneeled down on his neck. New video showed at least three officers had their body weight pressed on George’s back as he laid face down on the ground while in handcuffs.
Posting memes and bringing awareness to the issue are great, however, actually using your resources to make change is even better.
Hov called up Gov. Walz after getting his number from CNN reporter/ REFORM Alliance CEO Van Jones. He wanted to talk to the Governor to share how he felt about the George Floyd killing and how justice could be served.
“It was so incredibly human,” Walz said about their coversation during a press conference yesterday. “It wasn’t Jay-Z, international celebrity. It was a dad and, I think quite honestly, a black man whose visceral pain of this that he knew.”
“His words to me, I want them to be confidential, but to summarize what it was: ‘Justice needs to be served, here. Justice needs to be served,” he continued. “He said he feels the compassion and the humanity of these folks who are speaking. He knows that the world is watching. How Minnesota handles this is going to have an impact across the country, and I think that’s what his impressions were.”
You can check it out below at the 43:40-minute mark:

Following their conversation, Gov. Walz appointed Attorney General Keith Ellison to take over the George Floyd case. As of now, only one (former) Minneapolis police officer has been brought up on charges. Former officer Derek Chauvin was charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter, both felonies. The other three former police officers - Thomas Lane, Tou Thao and J. Alexander Kueng - were fired like Derek, but have NOT been brought up on charges.
Thank you, Governor. https://t.co/saIgpXxXKt

Sunday evening, Hov released a statement via Roc Nation about his conversation with Gov. Walz, thanking him for appointing Keith Ellison to the case.

— Roc Nation (@RocNation) June 1, 2020
“After our very earnest conversation, thank you to Governor Walz for doing what’s right and calling in Attorney General Keith Ellison to take over the George Floyd case,” he wrote.
The dad-of-three then opened up about his feelings on the killing of George Floyd.
“Earlier today, Governor Walz mentioned having a human conversation with me — a dad and a black man in pain. YES, I am human, a father and a black man in pain and I am not the only one. Now I, along with an entire country in pain, call upon AG Ellison to do the right thing and prosecute all those responsible for the murder of George Floyd to the fullest extent of the law. This is just a first step. I am more determined to fight for justice than any fight my would-be oppressors may have."
Jay-Z then made a call to action for everyone to DO THE RIGHT THING.
“I prevail on every politician, prosecutor and officer in the country to have the courage to do what is right,” he concluded. “Have the courage to look at us as humans, dads, brothers, sisters and mothers in pain and look at yourselves.”
Last Friday, Jay-Z's wife, Beyonc, posted a video on Instagram demanding justice in the wake of George's death. Check it out https://theybf.com/2020/05/30/beyonc%C3%A9-speaks-up-after-derek-chauvin... ">HERE.

Several celebs have hit the streets in Minneapolis - like Nick Cannon & Porsha Williams - to protest with the people demanding justice for George Floyd. However, some celebrities aren't doing enough...at least not for CNN's Don Lemon.
During his segment yesterday, Don called out A-list celebs like Oprah, Tyler Perry, Drake, Tracee Ellis Ross, Anthony Anderson, Diddy, Jane Fonda and Ellen DeGeneres to take MORE action. With footage of protests playing on a split screen, Don called out "movie stars" who declined to speak on his show. He blamed their absence on them being too concerned about tarnishing their brand.
"A lot of people I ask to come on this show, to talk about this, [such as] wealthy celebrities, wealthy political people, [say], ‘I can’t do it. I’m mad. I don’t want people to see me mad. It might hurt my business. Or, I’m so upset that I had to go to my country house and I just can't do it,'” Don said. “Where are you? Why aren’t you fighting for these young people? If you don’t do it now, when are you going to do it? If you are a millionaire or a gazillionare or a movie star or a politician and you don't step up now, when the hell are you going to do it? STOP making excuses! Step up people. Step up Black Hollywood."
The CNN anchor then began to name drop:
https://theybf.com/2020/05/30/beyonc%C3%A9-speaks-up-after-derek-chauvin... ">"Beyoncé released a message, you can’t?," he asked.
“By me calling out your name, it doesn’t mean I’m calling you out. It means I love you, Ellen [DeGeneres]. It means I love you, Oprah,” he said, adding “I know they give millions of dollars to charity every year.”
“I want to see you Tracee Ellis Ross. I want to see you Tyler Perry. I want to see you Drake," he continued. "I want to see you my friend, Anthony Anderson. I love you … I want to see Diddy out there. I want to see you Jane Fonda, who I love and respect."
Whew! Peep the segment above.

Today for Week 3 of #YourLifeInFocus with @ww, the plan was to discuss adapting. How can we adapt to this pandemic we’re living in—or any crisis that shows up in our lives? But this week, the nation is in a state of rightful unrest after we witnessed the murder of George Floyd right in front of our eyes. Now, the question is: How do we adapt and evolve in this time of social injustice? Thank you to @gayleking and @jayshetty for joining me today. I’m not in Atlanta, but if I were I would have been standing with our Mayor! But there was nothing I could say better than what Mayor @keishabottoms said last night! Please, please stop this violence!! Looting is NOT THE ANSWER!!!! And listen to me, be careful where you are getting your information to JOIN protests!! There are people and other countries who are posting things pretending to be US, pretending to stand for peaceful protest, but they are trying to incite us into violence and chaos to try and do more harm!! Do not fall for this foolishness!!! Please stop the violence!

Chicago Spotlight: A Conversation with Sean Ali
DeShawn Ali, better known as DJ Sean Ali in the world of House Music, is a DJ/Producer and Label Owner. His genuine love for music started at an extremely early age. Just like most families in the city of Chicago, he was introduced to a variety of genres of music in his household. When his father was not around, he would take his dad's albums, read the credits, and listen to the music from start to finish. There was blues, jazz, gospel, R&B, soul, rock, new jack, and everything under the sun. It did not matter to him because he just simply loved music across the board. DJ Sean Ali was introduced to house music as a teenager in the mid-80's. Out of all the genres of music that he loved, there was something about House Music that he became fascinated with and passionate about. What he loved was that it had a taste of every type of music all rolled up into one. He became influenced by legendary house heads like Lil Louis, DJ Les, Danny Calco, Nu-Wave, and Alley Cats. He has a great respect and admiration for what they brought to house music and for what they were willing to pass on and share with him. He went from spinning at block parties to skating parties, school parties, block parties, to family reunions, you name it. His name soon started to become the buzz in the house music world of fellow DJs. Soon after, he would be sought after for weddings, and booking gigs at major venues like Zentra, Betty Blue Star, Funky Buddha Lounge, Smart Bar, Prop House, China Club, and Jun Bar. He thinks of himself as a stress reliever for the public. His skill has taken him to many places as well. He has traveled to places like Detroit, Fort Lauderdale, NY, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic. He is also highly respected by his peers as well because he has taken his craft to new heights and he is constantly expanding and giving back the way others gave to him.
To date, Sean Ali has multiple chart topping releases beyond "Sacrifice, such as "Still Standing" with co-production by Terance James featuring Thea Denee, "Electricity" remix off the Soul Element EP, featuring Sheree Hicks, "Hypnotic" EP featuring Sheree Hicks, including a bonus track called "Magic", "Dream Come True with co-production by Terance James Featuring Sheree Hicks, "Miles Away" EP and "Green Light" featuring Sheree Hicks which made top 20 on the soulful charts, "Present To Win," Featuring Rashaan Houston, "Love Is In the Air" Remix, produced and written by Sean Ali and Sheree Hicks, featuring vocals by Sheree Hicks as well, all available on traxsource.com. Recently, along with Sheree Hicks, Sean was co-writer of Sheree's new release on House 4 Life records, the title track "Celebrate" which also had remixes by Doc Link of Liberate Records, J. Caprice, and Milty Evans.
I had a chance to speak with him about his various projects and the evolution of his career.
Black Widow: Can you tell me a little bit about your background and what part music played in your life growing up?
Sean Ali: My father was good friends with a lot of musicians and singer/songwriters from back in the day. He would take me to the record store or the musicians would come to the house. I was immersed in old school music because it was always played in the house. My dad loved to play his records. I wanted to learn more about the artists that I was listening too, where it came from and who produced it. I was always into it. That was the beginning of my musical journey.
Black Widow: I totally relate. My grandparents were jazz musicians performed with some of the greats at The Apollo and Club Delisa and we used to have a ton of people at the house! My grandma would host parties at her home with some of the singers and dancers and I would listen to their stories. It was fascinating.
Sean Ali: Right, Same here. There were times Jerry Butler, the “Chi-Lites”, some of The Artistics, and others were at our house too. I had no clue who they were until I was older.
Black Widow: So your dad was an avid music lover?
Sean Ali: Oh Yeah, he was also a photographer and worked with George Daniels at all his events too. My dad was right there taking photos and show them to me… Keith Sweat, Run DMC, LL Cool J. He would be at concerts and parties all the time. I couldn’t help but like music. My dad is my role model, so I take after him in many ways.
Black Widow: So when did you discover house music? What drew you to it?
Sean Ali: Good Question! So, Byron Stingley stayed like a few homes down from me and Lil Louis lived around the corner.
Black Widow: Oh wow! I had no idea!
Sean Ali: Yeah we are all from the same neighborhood. When I would listen to music at home, I always listened to both sides. I noticed the B-side would have a groove to it. So when I would go to parties in the neighborhoods or go around Lil Louis crib (they’d play music in the back a lot), and it would be the same music I heard at home but the B-side versions. I’d go home and dig through all the records that had a faster tempo on those B-sides and listen to them all. A lot of my friends in the neighborhood didn’t really go to house parties because they thought it was strange. You know we were more…you know… thuggish! [LAUGHTER] The house scene was preppy then!
I knew I liked the music so I decided to check a party out and I remember walking in and watching how they were dancing, how they got along and interacted with each other, how they played the music and I was sold!
Black Widow: Do you remember the first party you went to?
Sean Ali: Wow! Yeah, it was at a friend’s house. He was deep into house music. He was a few years older than us. That’s when I really experienced it. It was around 1984/1985 and I was maybe 15 years old. I heard every disco song ever at his house. I was bugging him, who sings that? Every week he’d play music at the house and I was like a student taking notes, writing down the artists who were on these records. As far as some of the larger parties, I think my first party was at the Bismarck. I used to go there on a regular. I was too young to go to Sauer’s and stuff like that. I know folks say they were there but I’m only 45 you know what I’m saying?
Black Widow: Same here! I was too young to go to any of those spots!
Sean Ali: Yeah I wasn’t even trying to get into those parties. [laughter] I’ve been to COD’s before, but I never experienced The Underground and Original Warehouse and stuff like that, but my uncles and aunts would go. I was going to the Bismarck, The New Warehouse, the Alcatraz and Elbo Room.
Black Widow: So when did you did you decide you wanted to DJ and how did you learn?
Sean Ali: About 1990/91, my neighbor was DJing and we lived across from each other. My bedroom window faced his bedroom window. DJ Boxx used to live upstairs from him.
Black Widow: Get out! All of y’all lived around each other! That’s crazy!
Sean Ali: I moved to Forest Park and in our building, we would always hear someone playing house music and we would be like who is that? All the DJs were in the city on the southside and we were in Forest Park, so it was unusual to hear house music like that. I asked a friend who he was, and he told me his name was TJ and I said, I need you to introduce me to him. I wanted to sit down with him. Even before that, I would go to friends’ houses and try and mess around a bit on equipment but back then people didn’t want you messing up their turntables’ trying to scratch and do tricks like that. I had my own equipment, but I needed someone to show me how to get started. I had a friend named Lester and Dannon who would show me the ropes but I was more comfortable with TJ because he was younger, around my age. I’d go to his house and chop it up with him and borrow records and get a feel for it. I still wasn’t serious about it though because I was too busy going out.
Black Widow: Enjoying the parties and music!
Sean Ali: Yeah I was enjoying it more than I was playing it back then. I got serious out it late 90s/2000s. I stepped away from it for a while and got into hip-hop a bit then I started promoting parties; like Ice Bar and stuff like that. The money was good but the gangs, drug money and stuff like that took me away from it. It went a different direction and I had to leave it. After I left hip-hop, I didn’t know where I wanted to go. I knew I didn’t want to go stepping every night but I still loved that club scene.
Black Widow: Yeah, you didn’t want to deal with all that extra stuff. I get it.
Sean Ali: Yeah and when I got married, I moved up north and started hanging with Chris Underwood and feeding myself back into the game a little bit but because I was up north, I was at Betty’s, The Note, Ventra, Red Dog…
Black Widow: See that’s where I was going because I was living up north back then too in Wicker Park. So I didn’t start coming south to party until about 10 years ago. Everything I did was north back then.
Sean Ali: Same here! I think the Dating game was the first time I think I was at a south side spot. Maybe around 2007.
Black Widow: So when you got back into it, who were some of your influences?
Sean Ali: Oh Wow…whew! I know people always say Terry Hunter but he was always one of my favorites. I loved his taste in music, how he produced music and how he selected and played music. It was always on point and I was never disappointed on the dance floor. Vick Lavender as well, He was another one. Vick was going to give you that soulful journey. Dimitri from Paris, Lil Louis, Gene Hunt, Gene Farris, Lil John, Grant Nelson, Masters at Work, Joe Clausell…it’s so many, I hate to feel like I’m missing someone. It was dope because everyone had their own style and people weren’t trying to be like one particular person.
Black Widow: When did you decide to get into producing?
Sean Ali: About 2006 I think. I knew how to program and produce because I was doing hip-hop tracks. I would always buy equipment, beat machines, keyboards anything that was coming out. I remember a friend was telling me I could make house music on this equipment. So, I started playing around with it and creating sounds, but I never put it out or took it seriously per say. You know I never asked a “Terry Hunter” to check it out or a “Farley” to listen and/or play it.
It wasn’t until I started to see the opportunities to get gigs dry up a bit that I realized I had to be more than a DJ. To get that visibility as a house artist, you really had to be multi-faceted. I knew I had to step my game up. DJ, Producer, Label owner…I had to at least do two out of three. I wasn’t even thinking about a label yet.
Black Widow: So the label came after?
Sean Ali: Oh yeah, I had to get the producing down first. I hooked up with a friend who was already doing great music. We decided to link up and create “Sol4orce” around 2009. That’s around the time we linked up with Sheree (Hicks). We started working on some tracks but we would only give them to a few people. We were still nervous about giving them to bigger name DJs at the time. We didn’t know if the music was strong enough yet. We realized we needed some vocalists. So, we got Lafayette Parker to do a song for us in 2010 and we tried to shop it to a few labels. I wrote the song and I remember telling my brother, we got a hit! This a runner right here! [LAUGHTER]
I remember telling folks “yo… when you see Terry (Hunter) or Ron (Carroll), let em know I got some heat!” [LAUGHTER] Thinking they are going to call me or approach me like “Hey I heard you got some heat, let me hear it” …. [LAUGHTER] That’s not how that works!
Black Widow: Nope…not at all! [laughter]
Sean Ali: I remember asking a cousin to find Sheree on Facebook because I wasn’t even on Facebook at the time. We’ve known each other for a long time. She wasn’t even thinking about doing any house music back then!
Black Widow: Right! That’s what she said when I interviewed her!
Sean Ali: Yeah, I reached out to her and told her what I was doing, and she told me what she was doing. I had to convince her that she could do house music. I told her about the sound that I was hearing in house music and sent her YouTube videos of Stephanie Cooke because I knew she would like her style and she loved it. So, I sent her a track and the next day she sent over the vocals and that’s how I got my first song with Sheree Hicks. It’s so dope because it was a song I was confident in too.
Recording with Sheree was so intimidating initially because she was already out here doing her thing with some big names. I was on pins and needles. I used to travel with her back in the day so I knew she worked with some big name cats and here I am in a studio apartment with her and engineers that were scared to mess up. [laughter] "you push the button…nah you push the button"…
No one wanted to mess up so I stepped in. I remember after it was done, she said, “I don’t like it, it doesn’t sound right. I was like WHAT! [laughter] I knew I could learn from her. I couldn’t’ act like I knew everything or like I was too good to learn. She knew people that would help me and teach me. I knew we had something special and she took me to another studio with professionals and hooked me up with a cat named Chris and he really knew what he was doing. The way he recorded her vocals left me speechless.
Black Widow: That’s dope that you understood that I’m new to this and I can still learn...
Sean Ali: It was a great experience and from that one song, I was ready to get it out there. I was confident now and I had Sheree Hicks so I was feeling myself. I remember running into Stacy Kidd at Green Dolphin and telling him about it. I sent it to him and he took a listen and loved it. He wanted to put it out and that was it after that. It was called “Sacrifice”. Sheree had this subtle and smooth voice and I knew the music was going to be different from what other producers were doing.
Black Widow: What made you decide to start a label?
Sean Ali: I got tired. Once I found my niche, I was doing songs daily. We were building our catalog and we were tired of sitting on it. We wanted to get it out there. When you go through a label it’s always, “I can’t do it for three months, or change it or I don’t like it” and then if you do put it out, you aren’t getting paid what you think you should. It got to the point where I had to learn the business side and start to handle that.
Black Widow: It was the way you controlled your art…Artistic and financial control?
Sean Ali: Yeah I wanted to know what I made, what I sold, and what’s happening with this music especially on the financial end. I wanted to see the numbers. That was one of the reasons I decided to run a label but I wasn’t sure how to go about it or even if I had time to do it. Distributors, artists, contracts, other people’s business and stuff like that. I met up with Sean Houston and then I met Monk Julius and we clicked right away. He was about business 100%. He was like start that label.
Black Widow: You had to learn the in’s and outs of the business…not just the creative stuff?
Sean Ali: Yeah absolutely. Sheree and I were at the same place at the same time. We met Josh Milan around that time too. I would send him stuff and ask for advice and he said the same thing…start your own label. I had Monk, Sheree, and Josh telling me the same thing, so I was like, yeah, it’s time. He had just started Honeycomb Music and he had someone call me and explain it to me.
Black Widow: I love that! So many people act like we don’t share information and that we don’t help one another with different endeavors but that really isn’t the case. It’s a lot of people that want to see everyone make it.
Sean Ali: Exactly!
Black Widow: That says something about the quality of people you keep around you.
Sean Ali: Yeah Definitely. Once I did and started getting paid…that was it. I was all in! That’s how “Sounds of Ali” was born. It’s been 4 years and counting now…
Black Widow: And you have no regrets do you?
Sean Ali: None at all! I love it. It’s just so dope because people ask me my opinion and want to shop music to me from all around the world. I love it! It means a lot.
Black Widow: Are you partial to a particular sub-genre of house music?
Sean Ali: This is hard. I love good house music…just good music. It doesn’t matter to me. It can be deep house, jacking house, techno house, soulful house…it just doesn’t matter the sub-genre. If it’s good, it’s good! If it’s produced right, with great sound and melody, dope artistry, it can happen in any genre in house music. I just love good house music.
Black Widow: I love that answer! That’s it!
Sean Ali: I do produce a lot of soulful house music because I love a lot of jazz sounds. That’s part of my background. That’s what I grew up listening to but I can groove to anything as long as it’s good.
Black Widow: Good music just moves you!
Sean Ali: Look, I’ve seen you dance before and your reaction to music. So I know you get what I'm saying. I see what music does to you and I see how connected you are to the music as an artist and as someone who just loves music. I saw you watching Dawn (Tallman) perform and you were in tears!
Black Widow: Yeah I had a moment! Like For real!!!
Sean Ali: Good Music…that’s what it does! That’s power! People try to be cool but I don’t care…it does something to you.
Black Widow: I’m drawn to music that moves me.
Sean Ali: That motivates me! When I see that, that motivates me to go back into the studio and get to work. I want to touch the heart and soul of people. I just enjoy all of that and it’s not just soulful house that does that. That’s just good music. It affects people in so many ways; even with the spoken word…it touches people. For example, I love Ursula Rucker…
Black Widow: OMG! I can’t believe you mentioned her! She’s literally my favorite modern day poet! I’m a huge fan of hers.
Sean Ali: Yeah she’s dope. I just dig her vibe! You know It can be done and what you and (Dee Jay) Alicia did with “Rough”, you guys took it up a notch and gave it more energy with that strong afro vibe and those drum beats.
Black Widow: Thank you so much! That’s so dope of you to say! What’s coming up for you in 2018?
Sean Ali: Monk Julius has joined the production team. You can create better with more hands! We are working a lot together on various projects, including some Afro tracks to show our versatility. We also are working with Tasha Larae from Arrested Development along with DJ Pope out of Baltimore on a track coming out on Quantize. We have Lester Jay coming out too. We got a couple of tracks out now on Traxsource. Actually, we have one coming out the same time as you guys. Jaleal Meadows is an artist under Chic Soul Music and we did two songs off of his EP that’s coming out on the 20th.
Black Widow: That’s what I love. It’s so much new music coming out of Chicago right now.
Sean Ali: I love it when we all have releases coming out. It’s good for Chicago. Terry (Hunter) got joints, Mike (Dunn) got joints, Greg (Winfield) has a #1…
Black Widow: If you look at all of the artists just right now from Chicago on the charts, it’s so different but it’s all dope!
Sean Ali: Right! Everything!! Soulful, Jackin, Afro, we are out here!
Black Widow: Yes we are creating…Chicago is creating good music!
Sean Ali: So much and we all make the city shine! That’s what it’s all about!
Black Widow: What does it mean to be a Chicago artist and represent your city?
Sean Ali: Wow that’s major! It means the world to me. I’m going to represent Chicago anywhere I go. You have to understand that Michigan Avenue used to be full of record labels back in the day. It’s so many musician’s from here who impacted the music world from so every other genres too. Chaka Khan, Curtis Mayfield, The Chi-Lites, The Stylistics, Frankie Knuckles, Ron Hardy…it’s so many! You can go on and on! Chicago is not just the mecca of House Music, we are a huge part of Music Culture! I feel like a millionaire being from Chicago…our history is just so rich!!! Growing up in the house scene, you have access to people who are considered legends. We have access to so much talent here! It’s a blessing.
Black Widow: Indeed we take for granted the quality of musicians and artists we have here and the access we have to them. That’s something that you don’t get anywhere else! Thank you so much for speaking with me and I wish you nothing but continued success and growth!
Sean Ali: Thank you! It was my pleasure. I love what you are doing with the site and with your music. I can’t wait to check out “Fenix”!
Black Widow: Thank you! I’m really excited about the song! I appreciate that!
Thanks for checking out my latest interview with a musical creative from Chicago! I hope you enjoyed it.
Until next time, see ya on a Dance Floor!

I know I kinda did a recap already from Oct ’18-19 – and I was going to write one of my rambling, lovable, GIF-heavy recap posts but I kind of like this bullet points idea.
I looked back through my calendar and feel like 2019 had a lot of wonderful in it. It was a solid year. Here’s a chronological look:
January
Rang in 2019 by watching Millie & Stanley, 2 cantankerous and lovable neighbor pugs. Also got food poisoning.
My first MINt team (Dec ’18-Feb ’19): Abominable SnowMINts
Playing with Pinafore (Nov ’18-Oct ’19) at CSz
Volleyball w Apple buds on team “How I Set Your Mother”
Continuing to teach Level 1 Krav Maga classes at Titan Gym
I go to work on Polar Vortex day! It’s pretty quiet.
February
Promotion to Senior Sales Executive at Grubhub
I’d only been there 10 months!
Flew to Phoenix for family time
Decided to visit the AZ office since my boss was in town too (for actual work)
Then worked in the office for 3 days
Work paid for my flight back
I felt v. v. fancy.
My parents drove 3.5 hours each way for me to see the Grand Canyon. On first sight walking up to the rim I cried. How is anything that vast and majestic? Whew. Full stop.
Sedona was wonderful and kooky and I need to go back.
Visit to best/favorite KBBQ – Cho Sun Ok – in Chicago with Neal AND we went to a concert – Dean Lewis & SYML
March
Started Crossfit at Windy City Strength and Conditioning
KBBQ at the same restaurant – Cho Sun Ok – 2 weeks after Neal BUT with Kalin.
I still don’t know how this happened but my stomach ain’t complaining about it.
Started final ID class w UW-Stout.
It will be the hardest class I’ve ever done in my life.
I just don’t know it yet.
Due to this ^^ took sabbatical from teaching Krav at Titan Gym
Flew to Dayton to see Trace/Dinah and Xander/Abs (PLUS YOU, COTY) and I’m so glad I did.
April
Took a Music Improv workshop through MINt with Alex
I sang a song about how I still have a Washington State Driver’s License but mid-song realized it was really was about how I missed home and cried in public, in a workshop. I’M FINE.
Went to a Cubs game IN A BOX for work
Yes, it was v chill and fancy.
Cast on second MINt team: BlooMINt Onion
Alex & Jake from the Little Rock crew came to Chicago
We get Old Fashioneds at the Broken Shaker
This is the best Old Fashioned in the city. I am convinced.
I will not be moved.
Interviewed for dream job while still in school for said job field.
Got dream job.
May
Started dream job
Saw Hamilton w Josh.
We are in the second row.
I immediately want to see it again. I do not.
It closes in 2 weeks (aka Jan 15, 2020) from now LETS GO
Bekah Brown (and Potato and Sully) in town!
We roam and nap and laugh.
Sat in with Oh Cecelia at iO twice
Being asked to sit in is bananas nice and I have done it several times this year with different teams. Thank you everyone for your trust in my make-believe!
Went to PHX for work to train 5/13 class
Do not feel prepared as I JUST started said job.
People are v nice.
I got upgraded to a suite and neither of my 2 bosses did. BIZLIFE.
Abby (L&D Boss) and I do not eat bread bowls from Panera by the hotel pool, WHICH I WAS PROMISED would happen. Still sad.
Officially resigned from Titan Gym/teaching Krav due to new job
Originating dream job position and possibly traveling every 2 weeks for it just wasn’t good for students, for the gym or for me. But I miss y’all.
Saw Falsettos (Broadway) show
it was NOT a comedy
I was NOT prepared
AND if meme photos of me crying on the train alone after ever come out it is Todd’s fault. The end.
Finish/graduate from UW-Stout’s Instructional Design Graduate Certificate program
I survived the aforementioned hardest class in m’life.
Genuinely sad/miss my group TO THIS DAY.
June
Mom & Dad come to Chicago –
Father’s Day
Field Museum
Architect River Cruise
CHICAGO HOT DOGS!
Had huge audition for something I really wanted. Felt good about it. Didn’t get it.
Did a 5 Things CSz workshop
July
Performed for the first time w Ben, Nicole & Nate as music improv team AirBRB
Had lunch with Toni Berry, writer, bud, fellow Sagittarius, former Apple co-worker
By ‘lunch’ I mean we hung out for like 4 hours. WE ARE LONG WINDED.
Decided to apply (and got) a workshop spot with RIFF; a music improv short form show that performs at iO.
Did improv set in a church service with Susan
it was a planned set; we didn’t just jump up and start, I swear
Lunch with Jenean, former work wife and also, strangely, my first time eating poke
I now love poke
WHAT TOOK ME SO LONG
Fly to Washington to drive to AZ with Mom & Em
August
4-Year Chicago-versary!
Me and the Bean are very happy together in a committed relationship over halfway to a common law marriage
Drive from Lynden, WA to Phoenix, AZ in 2 long days with Mom & Em
YES TWO DAYS
Teach 2nd training class in AZ for 8/5 class
Abby, L&D boss and of the 2 women I report to leaves the company. I hate this but still love her.
Sit in with Goat Milk Goddesses to perform at the Women’s Funny Fest at Stage 773
Dana comes to see me!
She’s the best.
I try my first Pole Dancing class at Brass Ring Chicago
Due to a Groupon I bought 6 months before that was about to expire 3 days later. I keep it up through EOY.
Compete in music improv competition “Verses” at Second City with AirBRB – we lose to some of my favorite people on Home Entertainment so I’m ok with it.
2nd RIFF show!
September
Audition for Anarchy, another music improv team
I don’t get it
But I know a ton of people in the room
I’m ok!
Speak to my UW-Stout instructor’s class about being hired to work in ID/Learning & Dev field as a Sales Trainer right out of our program.
Feel v accomplished.
Toggle from Crossfit back to LSAC gym by my house
Y’all CF is cool BUT MY WALLET WAS SCREAMING.
Play volleyball for Fall Season with people I met in Spring Season at Lincoln Park High School.
Catherine (Sales Boss) the second woman I love working for leaves the company. I hate this but love her.
I got her some goodbye cookies that Carrie makes and they are PERFECTION (see pic below) support Carrie she does amazing work and a percentage of every order supports a different charity every month. HERE IS HER LINK I LOVE IT.
I got myself a massage. I am stressed/sad about the boss situation above BUT NOT THE COOKIES.
I got it on Groupon, I am fiscally responsible.
Start meal plan service to eat Keto for the month of October (officially 9/30-end of October).
Not fiscally responsible but IT IS OK.
Keto doesn’t let me eat fruit as as a Washingtonian this is a crime I do not like.
Make it the 30 days, lost 10lbs in Oct.
I get a new boss to report to on the Learning Team side at work. He seems cool although I don’t know it yet.
October
Final Pinafore show at CSz. I have the sads that this core group of people I love is done.
Yes, yes, I know we can still play together
IT WAS A GOOD BITTERSWEET THING
I know all things must end I used to watch Lost
Started some personal training with Brian at LSAC
I warn Brian I am a talker.
Brian makes me do weird double kettlebell swings. I am not good at it right away and hate it.
Literally all I do is try to make Brian laugh to get my mind off of sweating.
Guys, don’t worry. I got plenty of sweating in still.
Started an Olympic Weightlifting class with Keith at LSAC
I AM SHOCKINGLY GOOD AT THIS.
Thank you to the Crossfit gym and also Coach DeHoag at LC, I guess.
Cry at work 3x in one day after feeling overwhelmed w my 2 bosses being gone and the announcement we are upping our hiring aka much bigger training classes.
1. After a meeting
2. In a stairwell mid-afternoon
3. In first 1:1 with new boss
Is this a record and if so please get me a medal
I go to DC for the first time and get to hang with David, Bekah, Adam & Dana (and Millie)
I needed this.
Performed in Hocus Pocus Redacted at the Music Box as Allison.
Yes, yabbos
November
Work tells me they approved hiring a 2nd person to do my role; we begin applications/interviews
Robbie becomes 2nd trainer at work and I begin trying to explain how/why I do what I do.
Audition for CSz & cast onto new Rec League team: Potluck
Watch Heather, Dan & Jess’s Bloody Christmas Carol show
My friends are fancy and sing & dance really well.
I came straight from a volleyball game and am very sweaty smushed next to strangers in this small theater.
See Robbie Ellis’s truly hilarious orchestra with Ben.
We fancy dress up.
We are seated in the front row.
We did not know we would be in the front row.
Thanksgiving week is my first week ‘off’ of training since starting my job on 5/1; I get so much work done and also contract a cold.
I do nothing except sit in my apartment alone for Thanksgiving, make myself mashed potatoes and I love it.
December
Record size massive training class (for us)
I am responsible for the learning & logistics of 20 people and gain (probably) 17 gray hairs.
Work approves a 3rd (Arizona) and 4th (Philadelphia) trainer; applications & interviews begin
I start seeing a therapist – it helps.
Nothing specific; I’m just noticing circular behaviors as I look back over my shoulder for 30+ years.
Added to the ensemble of RIFF
After performing as a sub several times since that workshop in July!
I’m added in the same class as Ben, Sarah & Will who I feel so honored to sing (and rhyme) with.
I fly home for 12 days to Lynden, WA
I turn 32 sitting at home, surrounded by my family.
I tell my family I plan on climbing Kilimanjaro in October 2020. I announce it at my birthday dinner so I can’t back out of it. NAME IT AND CLAIM IT BBS.
Yes, another blog post will come to flesh this ^^ out.
Performed with Upfront Theatre’s ensemble, including Ryan Stiles, for the 2nd time in Bellingham on the day after Christmas. My family is there seeing me do what I love and I am happy.
2019 Overall
Performances – with Pinafore, with MINt teams, RIFF and so many other opportunities to sit in and play with teams. Feeling grateful.
Shows – I saw countless shows; CSz matches, iO & SC improv, staged shows, musicals, Broadway, even just at movie theaters! Ya girl is stuffed full of stories. Also I have crazy talented friends.
People – I saw family 4 times! That’s almost a record for one year! Lunches, grocery store runs, shows and coffee times with so many friends too.
Health – Got my first ever stitches (shoulder), which was a weird first to have post-30. Overall healthy but somehow got food poisoning 3x this year. Probably won’t be asked to be on Bear Grylls show because of it ever.
Work – very happy to be working in the Learning & Development field as a trainer, instructional designer and general weirdo. Finally. GH has been very good to me.
Mental state – I’m pausing here and looking around my house, just thinking about this one.
I’m proud to be taking steps to correct patterns and behaviors that are unhealthy. Seeing a therapist that gives homework to work on between sessions is great.
I’m improving at recognizing progress as progress even when I wish the progress was bigger.
I’m proud/terrified to be setting the goal of climbing Kilimanjaro in October 2020. It scares me and excites me. More to come on this!
I’m thrilled to be an ensemble member on a long-term team. This has been a goal since I got to Chicago – I don’t need to drive my work to SNL or Mainstage. I just want to be on a consistent team of talented friends that I laugh with and improve my skills.
Hiya, 2020. Let’s go.
She’s Solid. I know I kinda did a recap already from Oct '18-19 - and I was going to write one of my rambling, lovable, GIF-heavy recap posts but I kind of like this bullet points idea.
