Do you recommend any movies for this Halloween?
oooh what a fun question!
i love horror of all kinds so i always have a ton of recommendations if someone is looking for horror ESPECIALLY around halloween. soooo i'll split my big ones into lists. under the cut cus it's a long post lmao
typical halloween fare for a newbie who doesn't like gore
beetlejuice. a fun older romp that's suitably spooky (not at all scary lol) and fun to watch with a non-horror fan (don't watch the sequel though)
hocus pocus. another fun campy romp that i watch every halloween. are you a gay person if you don't like hocus pocus (and i reference it whenever i do a conference paper lmao)
ghostbusters. a classic, of course, and sigourney weaverā¦woof woof.
monster squad. universal monsters come to life and it's up to a group of plucky horror-obsessed youngsters to stop them. cute and fun!
witches of eastwick. cher, susan sarandon, and michelle pfeiffer. mothers are mothering.
classics for versed horror fans
halloween. a classic, i prefer the orginal 1979 version but the recent requel is a great romp, and the rob zombie version is dogshit but in a fun way. it has a million sequels too, so you could watch them all month
trick r treat. another classic, a little more modern, an antholody of short scary and gory films all themed around Halloween :)
scream. one of my favourites (literally have a tattoo for it) and the ultimate classic. so easy to watch and the best time you'll have watching a horror movie
jennifer's body. a contemporary classic, megan fox plays a sexy demon and there are cute goth boys too! i like lisa frankenstein more (watch that too) but it's still an emblem of emo-ism
reanimator. i'm wearing a reanimator t-shirt right now so i have to. gay people reanimate the dead. good movie!
underrated new watches for a more versed horror fan
wolf creek 2. torture porn for when you've finished the saw franchise. i recommend 2 because it's a lot more bizarre and fun, but the first one is good too :) (cw for rape though)
the loved ones. despicable campy gorefest, a girlboss torturing a beautiful emo boy, i fucking LOVE this movie and i wish more people knew about it, it's iconic.
house of 1000 corpses. i'm not a HUUUUUGE fan of this movie, but it's got a good halloween aesthetic to it :)
ginger snaps. teenage girls turning into werewolves, this has a GREAT aesthetic to it (better than jennifer's body to me) and katherine isabelle is my woman crush wednesday forever and ever
fright night. gay vampires trying to groom kids into gay vampisism :) but it's a lot more playful then that, chris sarandon is such a hottie in this movie too

ok so. hereās some random recs! i donāt know if youāve watched any of these yet so if you have, well, pretend you havenāt <3
freddy vs jason : cheesy ass slasher movie where two iconic slashers duke it out and fight like children. this was the first slasher film i ever watched ( thanks to my dad showing me ) so iām very fond of it even though itās ass! you donāt have to know anything about jason or freddy as slashers per se before watching this film ā¦ it can just be a fun little experience / a palette cleanser for the better, more serious works.
midsommar : now THIS is way more serious! this movie is rather dark and psychologically disturbing ā¦ i saw it once at a drive-in and iāve never been able to shake it from my mind. i think his other work, hereditary, is also very profound but itās harder to understand than midsommar! so iād recommend this first. deals with the inherent danger emotional women are in and how easy it is to fall victim to certain āgroupsā. i also would recommend this because if you ever get around to watching yellowjackets, there are a lot of parallels to be made with the themes!
the boy ( 2016 ) : i love this movie so bad! has a very good twist that iām not gonna spoil and really exceeded my expectations. i canāt say much about this movie because a lot of what i love about it is spoilery, but itās about a girl and a haunted doll and the unlikely bond that emerges from that ā¦ only for things to take a turn for the worst </3
ginger snaps : MUST SEE. everyone talks a lot about jenniferās body but ginger snaps is THEE original jenniferās body and does itās themes more justice imo. very CAMP and very much centered around the horror that comes with puberty as a woman. the centerpiece of the filmās theme is also about an extremely codependent bond which is always a plus imo. very tragic and very well acted.
coraline : i used to have a halloween tradition of watching this every halloween. i donāt think i need to talk much about this one but itās genuinely phenomenal visually and story wise. lots of good themes and the other mother serves as a fascinating character and / or metaphor.
iāve watched more than this lol but these are the ones iād probably recommend or are the ones i can think off or remember the best. happy spooky month bestie!
alina this is SUCH a super thorough and helpful list and i'd kill for you. i love the variety of options here. also i cant BELIEVE i forgot about coraline and im so glad you reminded me. but yes im adding all of these to my list thank you so much!!
#rambles#answered asks#lambjock#everyone get a look there's a celebrity sighting on my blog#ginger snaps has also been rec'd to me before by others so i honestly REALLY need to watch it

I finished Yellowjackets and I already miss it! Any recs for what to watch to fill the void?
Omg I feel you every day of my life I miss Yellowjackets I wish I could watch it all for the first time again š
I donāt really watch that many shows so Iām terrible with recommending stuff š
If you want more depravity & complicated awful female villains & anti heroes with complex toxic sapphic dynamics Hostel 2 is my go to but you do have to watch the first one to understand it & I love the first one myself but it is very man heavy with characters lol
If you are really wanting to lean more into the messed up flesh consuming homoerotic codependent sapphic dynamic aspect specifically Iād recommend Ginger Snaps or Jenniferās Body the main canon sapphic female relationships in both those movies are brain rotting in similar ways to JackieShauna. (Though Ginger Snaps gets incestuous so I know thatās as quick for a lot of people tread carefully)
Ooh as far as TV shows go youād probably enjoy Killing Eve if you like Yellowjackets although that one the writing really goes downhill pretty badly so I do hesitate to recommend it unless youāre in it for the parts that are worth it & prepared for disappoint down the lineā¦. Ugh but Eve & Villanelle are SUCH amazing characters!!
Dead to Me is another show thatās really good & far less depraved & more drama centric than the other stuff Iāve mentioned. However in my opinion the writing does go downhill but the first 2 seasons? Iconic. Not canonically gay like the other things Iāve mentioned but still a delicious dynamic between two complicated & somewhat crazy women.
Not in the same genre as my other recs but Bottoms is a great comedic movie if you just want crazy & sort of awful lesbians.
Oh ā- ok last 3 recommendations. These ones donāt necessarily have the toxic crazy sapphic girlies element of YJ that I just assume is a big part of the draw (it is for me lol) HOWEVER they are some of my faves -
Hannibal. I love this show. Itās art. I donāt have anything else to say that hasnāt been said meow articulately by more hardcore fans. I watched this entire show in a fever haze when I had Covid so that probably affects my analytical ability but I promise itās great. Itās also a little man heavy & the female characters could beā¦ done better sometimes so that is a criticism I have that keeps it from being a number one fave for me but Hannibal & Will are VERY compelling & the plot & visuals are soooo good.
Scream mtv I honestly feel like youāve seen this one Iām pretty sure but itās a fave of all time & Emma/Audrey is one of my fave ships of all time. Excellent cast excellent writing itās so good.
Bates Motel. This show is so slept on in fandom & itās probably the best horror tv Iāve ever seen from start to finish it tells an amazingly cohesive prequel backstory for one of the most iconic villains of all time in a way that honors the book & film both of which I LOVE & somehow manages to stay fresh & shocking & exciting despite the audience knowing where itās going. For quality horror tv I canāt recommend this show highly enough itās honestly the best thing on this list on an objective level like the cinematography the fantastic acting from Vera Farmiga & Freddy Highmore especially but also Max Theriot & Olivia Cookie I just - I LOVE this show. Heavy heavy trigger warning though not just for incest which is inherent to a Psycho prequel but likeā¦. Everything you could ever need a trigger warning for. There is a significant amount of SA shown so yeah be careful.
Anyway there you go youāve probably seen a lot of the stuff on this list but this is what I could think of to watch next to somewhat keep the mood of Yellowjackets although of course we both know YJ is unique enough youāre never going to recapture that exact vibe ļæ½ļæ½ļæ½
If anyone else has recommendations also Iād also be curious! ā¤ļø
Oh wait last thing my best friend Juliet Lewis plays another iconic traumatized girly with maybe worse daddy issues than Natalie even in Natural Born Killers. This is one of my favorite movies but it is NOT for everyone. You are signing up for unapologetic depravity & sympathetic serial killer villain main characters with a toxic relationship. Now for me those are selling points but it is a very messed up movie so yeah. Trigger warning for SA incest & basically every dynamic in the movie being the definition of toxic.
Okay thatās off the top of my head for watching after YJ Iām done now lol š«¶
****Edit Iām listening to music on my porch as I play on tumblr & I Know the End by my best friend Phoebe Bridgers came on & I remembered to recommend School Spirits itās not exactly the same horror vibes of YJ but I just think youād like it because itās a delightfully creepy compelling & fun ghost story / mystery with absolutely wonderful characters fun cinematography exciting lore a good plot & a banger soundtrack ok Iām done now lmao go watch School Spirits itās so great
#recs#movie tag#tv tag#mutuals#I know youāve probably seen a lot of these but anyway#itās what I could think of haha#anyone else feel free to add š

I am constantly scared of horror movies to the point that I make an effort to not watch them but the passion you have for them makes me want to watch one and expand my horizons. Any horror recommendations for someone who gets spooked easily? Iām fine with gore btw itās more like realistic anxiety situations scare me like stuff that has to do with being kidnapping/feeling trapped. Have a wonderful night <3
Aw this is so sweet, I'm glad you're wanting to expand your horizons and I'm honored to be your guide! I think you'd enjoy more comedy horror, cheesy horror and horror that is more monster based. I can recommend some horror you could handle but I'd definitely stay away from movies like Saw, Hostel, The Black Phone and others like those.
I'd also recommend watching the trailers for these recommendations just so you can get a taste of them before you dive right in. I hope you enjoy trying out some horror! š¤
Little Shop of Horrors (1986) its a musical! Rick Moranis is amazing as a guy who gets an alien plant that has an unusual appetite
The Monster Squad (1987) some nerdy horror fans have to save their town from classic monsters that show up
Night of the Living Dead (1968) a zombie movie with minimal scares and an important marker in horror history!
They Live (1988) An alien movie with reflections on society
The Lost Boys (1987) California vampires. that's pretty much it
Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) another musical! campy, fun and queer as hell. one of my favorite movies in the whole world.
Re-Animator (1985) a lil science dude gets his roommate to help him bring people back to life [there is a sexual assault scene towards the end just fyi]
Evil Dead 2 & Army of Darkness (1987 & 1992) Bruce Campbell as a dude who can't catch a break. possessions, time travel, chainsaws, and catchphrases you'll be saying forever
Ginger Snaps (2000) a girl werewolf movie!! sisterhood, puberty, and some awesome special effects
Trick 'r Treat (2007) follow the rules of halloween or a cute lil guy will come and kill you. love this one so so much! also fun intertwined stories
Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988) one of my favorite movies! clowns, cotton candy, 2 dudes and 1 girl with a whole lot of chemistry flowing between then and a giant clown boss
Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (1988) Elvira's her usual beautiful campy self in a movie where she deals with a small town, an old wizard dude and a show in Vegas
Scream (1996) a slightly realistic slasher movie that pokes fun at horror movies and fans. a great cast and ofc the iconic costume
Beetlejuice [and honestly a lot of Tim Burton movies]
Any/All of the Universal Monster movies [Frankenstein, Dracula, The Invisible Man, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Wolf Man]
Jennifer's Body (2009) A girl gets possessed and hunts down boys while her best friend tries to stop her. queer undertones, awesome leads and iconic lines
Zombieland (2009) a fun silly zombie movie with an awesome cast
Willy's Wonderland (2021) starring Nicholas Cage as a stranger who comes to town and has to deal with some silly possessed animatronics [big five nights at Freddy's vibes]
Dave Made A Maze (2017) a guy who's lost in life builds an insane labyrinth in his living room and it comes to life. such a good movie mixing horror, comedy and life lessons
Feel free to message me/send an ask for more recommendations, your thoughts on ones you watch, or anything else!

Hi ! Just saw your tags in the women in horror movies post, would you mind, when you have time, giving me your recommendation in horror movies ? It's a genre i'm learning to appreciate and i'll be curious to know what your favorite are ! Hope you're having a good day !
Oh nooooooo, youāve activated one of my trap cards.
So the fun thing about horror is that itās truly a diverse genre with many different places to start. I hardly feel qualified to make a rec list, because I feel like thereās still so much I havenāt seen??? So the below is by no means comprehensive, but hopefully it helps get you started! Also please feel free to talk to me about horror anytime, haha, I would love to know what you think if you get around to watching any of these.
The Classics: -The Blair Witch Project. The inception of found footage horror. -Halloween. The first slasher I ever watched. John Carpenter made this on a shoestring budget and the behind-the-scenes story is so fun. Plus, Jamie Lee Curtisās breakout role. -Candyman (1992). Tony Todd is so sexy in this, but also itās a great horror story about the power of myth, and an exploration of racial dynamics in Chicago. -Poltergeist. Has its issues but ultimately a very fun movie about a family working together to try and rescue their daughter from evil spirits. Thereās a very famous scene with a clown doll. Youāll know it when you see it.
Women and horror: -The Perfection. Queer and deeply messy. An exploration of how art can still be used as a system for abuse. Tw: implied sexual assault, self-harm. -Ginger Snaps. Explores the struggles of two teenage sisters via werewolf metaphor. Love this one. -The Witch. Ominous and atmospheric. The horrors of being a girl raised in a religious fundamentalist family. -Jenniferās Body. A cult classic thatās been validated/revisited in more recent years. Also queer and messy. Transplants the dynamics of teenage girl best friends into a horror movie setting. -The Babadook. Queer internet icon, but also an exploration of mental illness and the horrors of motherhood/the fear of being a bad mom. -The Descent. Do not watch this if youāre claustrophobic. A group of women go cave diving and discover creatures lurking beneath the earth. I think of certain shots/scenes from this movie often. -Black Christmas (1974). A sorority house is stalked by an unknown killer over the holiday season. Probably the one slasher that still scares the hell out of me, mainly because of how it chooses to depict its killer. Also more political than youād think, featuring an abortion subplot in the 70s no less. -Us. Lupita Nyong'o should have won an Oscar for this one. -Hereditary. Ari Aster has his flaws as a filmmaker (who doesnāt) but this movie is likeā¦ā¦really good. Toni Collette knocks it out of the park. Tw for GRAPHIC depiction of child death and suicide. Movies that personally scared the hell out of me: -Oculus. The fun thing about horror as a genre is that everyone has specific tropes that personally freak them the hell out. This movie dug its nails into one of mine and would not let go. -Parasite. People will probably argue that this is not a horror movie so much as a āthrillerā but this movie felt like a borderline panic attack and filled me with despair, and if that aināt horror, I donāt know what is. Sci-fish horror: -Nope. I really think this might be Jordan Peeleās best movie. Two fantastic lead actors, and dense with ideas, worth watching more than once. -Alien + Aliens. Sigourney Weaver should be enough of a selling point. The first two movies are famous, and they fully live up to the hype.
Personal faves: -Trick ār Treat. I watch this every October. A ton of fun. -The Lost Boys. 80s vampire camp, and kinda gay tbh. -Francis Ford Coppolaās Dracula. This film is darkly, gorgeously sumptuous. Just a spectacle of practical effects and costuming, and I highly recommend checking out the behind-the-scenes features. -The Silence of the Lambs and Manhunter. Lambs being my problematic fave for years. Manhunter is the best adaptation of Red Dragon hands down (no disrespect to NBCās Hannibal.) -Rear Window. Because while Psycho is good, itās also a problematic fave. Plus Rear Window was the first Alfred Hitchcock movie I ever saw, and it holds a special place in my heart for that alone. -The Invitation. The most uncomfortable dinner party in a film Iāve ever sat through. A slow burn for sure, with a terrifyingly good payoff. A movie about grief, unreliable narrators and primarily, the horror of no longer knowing people as well as you thought you did. Tw for suicide/self-harm. -Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight. I adore the first few seasons of the Tales from the Crypt TV series, but you donāt need to watch any of the show in order to enjoy this standalone movie. Itās silly. Itās gross. Billy Zane is having the time of his life as the villain, plus Jeryline is one my fave final girls in horror. -Hellraiser (1987). I adore Clive Barker as a writer (if you like to read horror too, please, PLEASE check him out) and I love that he got to direct his own feature film. This movie is gross, horny as hell, and unlike anything youāve seen before. Misc recs: -Jacobās Ladder. Surreal, nightmarish and tragic. Hard to talk about this one without giving too much away. Would recommend going in blind and letting it unfold. -Possession. This movie is Nuts. Even harder to talk about this one. Isabelle Adjani especially carries this film with her performance. -Barbarian. Probably my favorite new horror movie I watched last year. An examination of rape culture that didnāt feel exploitative (rare in horror.) Also some of the most bizarre plot twists Iāve seen. Go in blind. -American Psycho. Still my favorite role of Christian Baleās to date. Funny: -Tremors. Horror is a fantastic space for practical effects, and itās really, really hard not to love all the work that went into operating the giant worm puppets. Also hard not to love the queer platonic partnership between Kevin Bacon and Earl Bassettās main characters. -What We Do in the Shadows. Also recāing the TV show, but the original film still holds up and is funny as shit. Animation: -Perfect Blue. Satoshi Kon is one my favorite creators of all time, and this was the first feature film he made. Tw for an implied/simulated rape scene. -Paranoia Agent. Not a movie but an 11 episode anime series, also from Satoshi Kon. A mixing of genres, but tied together with a horror-themed premise and tone. I fucking love this show.
I donāt know if theyāre available internationally as a streaming service, so it might depend on what country youāre in? But if youāre looking to get into more horror, I would def recommend checking out Shudder. Theyāre strictly horror-focused, with a wide variety of film and TV, plus theyāre only 5 dollars a month!
I would also suggest checking out a great book called, āIt Came From The Closetā, a collection of essays on horror movies from queer and trans writers.
Happy viewing!!! Genuinely hope you enjoy and can't wait to hear what you think!

why isnt the teenage girl who gets crazy powers or starts turning into a monster and is out for blood and has to get taken down by the person closest to her not a bigger thing like i want a full blown horror sub genre here...
#carrie is tentatively part of it even tho kind of the whole point is she has nobody close enough to her#for that specific like person who cares about u most in the world has gotta take u down thing#but like ginger snaps is the perfect movie u know!!#also if u know more movies like this tell me#cuz the tentative list ive got for movies in this category are like#carrie but only sorta its got half the recipe with the iconic teen girl who starts killing people thing#and like i feel like heathers was sort of the other half of the equation cuz its undeniably impactful on what is actually the first#of this type of movie with all the elements together which is the craft.. tho the friendship is not well developed enough to have the same#like weight or punch to it#and then like ginger snaps jennifers body and probably raw really got it u knwo#ginger snaps is like the perfect movie..

Horror movie time! Do you like them? Are you a thriller person or a gore person? Any favorite villain? What horror movie do you think is over hyped? What horror movie do you like the most? How do you feel about jumpscares? Twist endings? If you're not a horror movie fan, just talk to me about your favorite Halloween movies :)
ahhh this ask was made for me š
where do i begin?
i love thrillers but i like gorey ones slighly better but it's mostly 80s horror films that include practical effects that i like the most, it's just something about them makes it way better tham in modern horror films. one of my faves i would say is the thing and the evil dead (and pretty much any movie that contains blood). actually i found out a few days ago that they included a bit of stop motion for the evil dead two and that's what made me love that movie even more <3 the only modern body horror movie i liked would be men (i know it wasn't a cup of tea for many ppl) but personally, the effects and the intense build up made it terrifying and good for me. also not sure why but i also tend to love horror that includes religion, like the exorcist and the conjuring movies and hereditary (the devil thing). i'd say the horror film that i love the most would be the chucky movies [ and ofc bride of chucky ;) ] since i also been loving slasher films lately, and those movies also has some paranormal stuff in it (like in bride of chucky when tiff tries to resurrect chucky).
i only like jumpscares if they're not too overused and if they're timed right. in hereditary for example, that one clicking scene got me good and the head against the ceiling scene (that entire movie is a masterpiece itself) i also feel the exact way with twist endings as long as they're relevant to the story and how executed they are.
not sure i can think of which one is overhyped but i've heard the recent halloween movies kinda are which i can see why (the first one is the best imo) i saw halloween ends and i only enjoyed the second half lol but i think those movies are decent. as for my favorite villain, i would go for ginger from ginger snaps and jennifer check, they're both one of my favorite horror icons but that would be a story for another ask :)

31 Days Of Terror š»
for october, my wife and i watching a horror movie every day, to get into the spooky wooky season. not that we care about halloween, but it's fun to do things. we have been on and off watching american gods (we finished season 2 before we had to take a break) and we watched the first ep of a league of their own, but it was getting a bit stale. i'm someone who bores easily and hates routine, but we love watching films and tv shows. so this is perfect for us!
so far we have seen:
ginger snaps
this is the first time i saw this movie. i've been meaning to see it for a while, because i absolutely love werewolves so much. they're my favourite supernatural creature! i used to get visited by a big werewolf guy when i was kid (in my delusional fantasies)! and watching it for spooky season was perfect. animatronics! prosthetics! scary lycanthropes! death pacts! heroin! loved it beginning to end
alien
if you had asked me before i watched it if i'd seen it, i would've said yes, absolutely, of course i've seen this amazing piece of cinema. that chest burster scene, amiright? jonesy, my beloved! fortunately for me, i had only seen elements of this movie, snapshots even. i had not yet gazed upon the beauty of lambert's face. i had not witnessed the evolution of the beast. i had not seen sigourney weaver wield a flamethrower (in THIS movie at least). and good goddamn, i'm glad i didn't, because it means that i got to watch it all the way through with my faculties up to speed. what a brilliant movie. that chest burster scene, amiright? jonesy, my beloved!
jennifer's body
if you have ever met me, you will know my feelings about this movie. i've seen it 400 times AT LEAST. i can quote it word for word. it was my gay awakening. i j'adore this movie with all my tit -- i mean, my heart. and i'm so happy i got to watch it with my wife. she hadn't seen it, and she was really impressed. the best feeling in the world is showing someone you love something you love and watching them love it too.
since we're up to day 4, that's all we've seen. we're about to watch ALIENS when it finishes downloading, and i'll update in a few days.
great news, though. i've gotten back into youtubing for realz and i've just finished filming a video about jennifer's body and ginger snaps -- both iconic pieces of monster media that are my two favourite supernatural creature movies, i think. idk. i'll have to rewatch fright night and american werewolf in london to know for sure. but i'd say probably. so stay tuned for that video essay! it'll be out in a couple days.

top five horror movies <3
this is such a hard question for me like half of my personality is based on liking horror movies šš
5. scream. self explanatory. ppl have talked to death why scream is good.
4. the lost boys. oh my god this movie makes me crazy. the atmosphere of it, the characters in it, the soundtrack! and gay sam! micheal is literally my pfp, I think I have a problem šāš»
3. noes 3/jennifer's body. sorry for double ranking but you knew that was gonna happen. noes 3 has some of my favorite horror teens (although noes 4 has a better final girl alice my love) qnd their friendship means a lot to me. and jennifers body FUCKS HARD.
actually wait I'm triple ranking malignant is also tied for #3. like how am I not supposed to love a movie about a girl who's parasitic twin lives in her brain and causes her to do a massive backbend while he hijacks her body and uses it to mass kill a bunch of people. also the cinematography is everything.
2. ginger snaps. movies that make you sob uncontrollably. also bridgette fitzgerald is a fashion icon </3
1. bride of chucky. literally movies of all time it has everything you'd ever want from a film. this is like required viewing to interact w me.
#honorable mentions include cult of chucky. friday the 13th 2. chopping mall. the craft. and wes cravens new nightmare.#asks#ask game#OH qnd the babysitter movies. and ready or not. and leprechaun 3-5

š
okay i was really tired when i answered this so iām tidying it up, original rambling under the cut.
i had to think really fucking hard about what movies would give a better understanding of my writing ofĀ daisy, rather than what movies have characters like daisy, and while the two are difficult to completely separate hereās a very tentative list, which again, cannot account for everything my brain is forgetting:
1) black swan (2010): one of daisyās core characteristics is how relentlessly she pushes herself to the point of self destruction, the kind of punishing, violent drive that controls her. like, lesbic ballerina slowly descents into self destructive madness to attain a single, ephemeral, arguably meaningless moment of complete perfection, hello? this is also the only move in this list that i watched before i wrote daisy, so it gets the first place.
2) a dark song (2016): this is probably not only one of my favourite horror movies but one of my favorite movies, period. it is so atmospheric as the dread slowly rises, and although it is a story about grief and loss it is also about a woman who is callous and strong and viciously determined to put herself through hell to do right by the one she loves. it hits that strange, beautiful note between love and horror. a huge deal of daisyās magic is influenced by this movie.
3) skins gen 2 (2009-2010): OKAY yes, make fun of me! but like i actually missed skins the phenomena as a teenager and watched it maybe one or two years ago? and watching it as an adult is honestly an entirely different experience: yes, it is vapid and written basically in one-lingers but isnāt that the absolute fucking delight of it? skins gen 2 does such an artistic job of encapsulating an idyllic teenage experience that slowly but surely descents into a hellish landscape that reflects how end-of-the-world violently devastating it FEELS like to be a teenager (in this essay i will----). also, like, so much of daisy is being retroactively influenced by Known Bitch, effy, like, tough slutty too-smart-for-her-own-good, afraid-of-nothing sex-and-drugs teenage girl is completely destroyed to the point of a mental break down the moment she falls in love? hello? effy literally not speaking for the entirety of gen 1 but still being That Bitch? that scene where she stands in the middle of the road screaming āiām not scaredā? effy hiding under the bed crying? filed under super self indulgent? yes. absolutely valid? you decide
4) stoker (2013): this movie is enjoyed best completely spoiler free, but it is a very, very good essence of everything that makes daisy: unstable, resentful mother-daughter relationships, familial power dynamics, murder, intrigue, faux innocence and a teenage girl-shaped reckoning
5) gone girl (2014): last but not least. cool girl is hot, cool girl is game. cool girl never gets angry at her man, she only smiles in a chagrined loving manner and presents her mouth for fucking. will a piece of media ever again allow a crazy smart, cold, calculating woman to unleash the inner psycho that the patriarchy gestates in every single one of us, and not Ā punish her? i literally cannot contain how passionate i am about fictional women being allowed to maim and murder and fucking rage, and somehow, somehow, to get away with it.
6) the dreamers (2003): okay, yeah sorry i canāt do just five. the dreamers is so pretentious it is borderline ridiculous and thatās what makes it so delightful and a quintessential daisyism: incestous-ish twin brother and sister are too smart for their own good, absorb an outsider into the gravitational orbit of their extremely insulated bubble, and their their pseudo-intellectualism is all fun and games until they can no longer ignore the revolution happening outside their cluttered apartment, and their refusal to acknowledge the outside world eventually leads them to their downfall. very problematique!!!!
7) the OA (2016): a magical realism story about a woman who resurfaces after being missing for seven years. none of the characters are quite like daisy, but this series is very close to my heart and it highly influenced daisyās magic, as well as the tender, softest parts of how daisyās magic connects to her emotions. a distillation of tenderness in the face of sorrow. like, everything in brit marlingās filmography (the east (2013), another earth (2011), sound of my voice (2011)), is an influence for daisy one way or another.
honorable mentions:Ā
jenniferās body (2009), i mean, iconic! and an absolute study on how daisy struggles with her relationships with other girls, but unfortunately a little too shallow in the characterization department to make it on the list. daisy is still about a solid 40% jennifer though. āyouāre killing peopleā āno, iām killing boys!āĀ
the little hours (2017) a comedy about nuns turning to witches in which aubrey plaza basically plays au daisy.Ā
heathers (1988), because bitchy one liners and six layers of offensive ironic humor going on at all times.Ā Ā
killing eve (2018): too recently released to truly count as an influence, but villanelle is basically daisy and they fucking owe me royalties.
florence + the machineās The Odyssey (2016): for abstract inspiration on daisyās magic of movement, as well as violent tenderness.
honorable influences from shit i havenāt watched:Ā
cersei lannister from game of thrones
claire underwood from house of cards
Ā the entire nunsploitation genre
ok i love LOVE films so i canāt even categorize them, like:
gone girl, obviously, but it doesnāt really count because a) obvious and b) already used it in books. but of course, the revenge, the female rage, the power fantasy! of course! of course! of course!
and being on the gillian flynn train, sharp objects, the whole thing, is just! the epitome of female rage, of female rage that surges from patriarchy, how it breeds women that turn against each other and against themselves and suffer this silent, unspoken dread that they canāt put into words. all of it! itās so good!
stoker, is like peak daisy content, and i canāt even really talk about it because you gotta experience it with absolutely no spoilers. Ā
ex machina, hannah, the vvitch (duh!). nurse 3d and american mary, Ā sympathy for lady vengeance, raw (2016), the neon demon.Ā
jeniferās body, DUH!
ginger snaps, Ā the beguiled. i, tonya, matilda. alias grace, big little lies. the OA, because very deep down daisy is Soft. none of the characters are quite like her, Ā but the physical aspect of it, magic as movement, movement as something engaging, physical, magic that comes from the body is a huge influence on daisyās core and heart and magic.
i havenāt watched game of thrones and donāt intend to, but like, all of cersei lannisterās plotline, and every character jessica lange has played in AHS
possession (1981),Ā Ā the videoĀ āvoodo in my bloodā starring rosamund pike
im probably forgetting like six billion important movies and iāll hate myself when i remember them
