Hello again!!! Today is something different from my usual content, but @marchiveeee (thank you btw!!!<3) has challenged me to do this and I just love this type of things, so I couldn't resist akajjsjxj

I also had some troubles with choosing a playlist i will shuffle, but since I'm a huge ✨Theathre Kid✨ (and because i was afraid some songs from marchiveeee would repeat itself because i have them on my playlists too ajhshwjs great music taste, honey!!!) i choose my musical playlist :p

So, this song in general is about how much love the characters have for their kids and when you think about it this way, then our OC can appear <a bit> spoiled. And I think she is, we can make it work, I'm actually pretty spoiled myself so yeah XD But her parents had pretty high expectations of her, too

We can also make the lyric not about her, but sung by her, then we get more personality traits. Because she's a fighter, she tries her best to make this world a better place. She's an activist, I can see her fighting for gay rights, protecting our environment, she's also for sure feminist and she's just so powerful. And it all comes from the fact how much caring she is. She has so much love for other people, even strangers, and she shows it all the time. She's the mum friend.

And the song itself is quite calm and comforting and those words can also describe her. She is your comfort person, who hugs you, listens to you and kicks ass of people who dared upset you.

It's also a song I usually cry to, even tho it's actually pretty heartwarming.

We can go with the same plot that is in musical (well, not excatly the same but still) and say that one of her friends commited sui**de. But I don't really feel it, you know? I mean, it would suit her pretty much, but i don't want to make it too easy. I think she herself had problems with her mental health in the past. Maybe because of the pressure, or maybe was she bullied for being too soft? Maybe she befriended someone who was bullied (ekhm KEN) and she got in troubles because of that? Yeah, pretty much. And that was the real reason why she changed school. And in her story, Ken didn't follow her on his own, she made him do it because she didn't want to leave him there alone.

Anyways, it's all in the past. It made her stronger and even more sensitive for other's pain.

Like, sorry guys, but this time i'll stick with the story showed in musical because IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE!! For context, in musical this song is singed by two main leads to their friends, picturing the same relationship from both perspectives and the boys shows off so much, lies and all those, because being in love is unmanly and he's BAD BOY. And when they meet after the song, he acts like nothing happened in between them because of his reputation.

And when she came back, she met her high school sweetheart completely broken, a literal bad boy, she barely recognised him after all the sweet times they shared together. Yeah, that broke my mind. Like, I have literally no idea how to make it work.

I remember doing the Time Warp

Ughhhhh so I guess I have to go with the context again. It's a party song. But the characters who are singing actually miss their home very much, as it showed at the end of the movie. So I guess she never moved out of her hometown again after she came back from the uni. She loves this place too much (wherever it is. Like, as far as i remember the city from the My Candy Love doesn't really have a name, right?).

But I have no idea tbh. But every single song before was so good for this challenge, I can live with this one being not. Hopefully the next ones will be easier skjajsjsj

CLOTHING STYLE / I know him — Hamilton

The song is sung by the King, so her clothes are probably pretty expensive. I feel like she's pretty basic, but because of her care for environment, she doesn't do fast fashion and buys only from good, expensive, planet-safe brands. The more eco the better. Song is also pretty cheerful and light, I think her clothes are, too. She probably rarely wears dark colours, she prefer white to black and all that.

I know I mentioned at least a few times that she's an activist, but this song actually made me think about what would she do to actually help suffering teenagers. 'Cause she would. She hates bullying and she still remember how much her friend, Ken(tin), has suffered because of it. And there are some non profit organisations founded to fight with it, so maybe one of her "hobbies" would be supporting them as much as she can?? It sounds so stupid as a hobby, i know, but like, i cannot really work with that song 😫 it's not even a hobby as it, but still, she fully gives her whole heart to it, you know??? U get my thinking, right?????

Well now that I'm thinking, maybe she just doesn't really have any hobbies, because she's so focused on her job and on helping other that there's a very little time she has left for herself. It's unhealthy, but the more i think about her, the more it makes sense.

And the second song, do not laugh, but I actually almost instantly got one, extremely stupid idea about a "hobby". Well, at least for her favourite tv series. Because this girl actually love court shows. (Fun fact, i didn't know there was a name for that, i just knew two court shows that were extremely popular in my country even tho the acting in them is horrible akjajajz but i googled it and wow, it's actually a thing). But yeah, she has a thing for them... I once had, too, when I was like 6. But I don't judge (hehe, 'judge').

honestly, dead poets society is one of my only personality traits anymore, i find myself drawing parallels to it constantly, for no reason but i love thinking about it. i’ve watched it so many times at this point, it’s,,, concerning. those tests always take me way less time than they give me, and i used to feel really awkward, i remember i took a bio one once, four hours they gave me, 45 minutes in, i was finished, and the moderator didn’t believe me. i aced it too, like the silly little neil kinnie i am. i’ve gotten used to the ‘worse’ side of being a neil kinnie, and honestly, now that my mum isn’t as controlling about everything as she used to be, it’s easier to deal with. i remember once, i’d gotten an 89 in algebra, and she threatened to pull me out of the fall show. that was a neil perry moment if i ever had one lol. the biggest thing these days is just imposter syndrome, imposter syndrome like oh you’re not hispanic enough, but also, you’re not queer enough, nonbinary enough, things like that. It’s exacerbated some days, but i try.

i watched the it movies on my cousin’s hbo,,, i may or may not have used it without her permission since she forgot to log out of my computer, but that’s neither here nor there. i remember having such a hard time taking the first one seriously initially, because of all the new kids on the block jokes, having a mum who was obsessed with them made it hard, especially when i actually got them all- in truth, the only midnight premiere i’ve been able to make was the force awakens, and i had school the next day too. i’m definitely a richie kinnie, and i have the internalised homophobia (only towards myself though) to prove it /hj my waterbottle has both a sticker of neil on it and a sticker of the r + e carving on it. in case there was any doubt about me lmao. stan kin makes sense for you, honestly, i can see it, i can see it.

okay so listen- no really, i’d bought them with the intention of only drinking half of one that night and spreading them out like that, but then came 9:45pm, and i had a research paper (on womens’ pockets/lack thereof) due at 10am that i simply hadn’t even started, so i downed them all in an hour and got the paper turned in at 5:56 in the morning. but i scare you huh? /hj bee, you’re too sweet, in truth, i’m fairly inelegant, but i try, as for the comforting and cosy, i’ll take you at your word, since that is something only someone interacting with me could discern. i do try to be kind to others for the most part. mainly i think because i’m usually on the other end of mean people.

honestly, i have never known a school rule to make sense. banning ripped jeans? banning dyed hair? it’s almost as if if they don’t stifle everything natural about kids expressing themselves they dont feel like they’re doing anything. but i digress. the same-sex couple rules were. awful. 12 year old me had enough going on without having an administrator yell at my friend and i for hugging in the courtyard and not leaving until we were a foot apart, but hey.

Btw, just so you knew, the musicals and songs that I put next to their names aren’t necessarily the one’s you’re singing if you don’t want them to be. I just wanted to give you some reference as to which song I was listening to when I wrote it.

Also, Yoosung and 707 have two headcannons, mainly because I fucking love musicals and secondly because I have a major soft spot for them so I wanted them to get some extra loving.

P.S, if you’re wondering, I’m on day five of 707′s route for the ten thousandth time and I’m preparing for shit to hit the fan, but I’ll cry anyway because goddamn it let me LOVE YOU, YOU SMOL RED BEAN

He was feeling kinda bad about ignoring you, especially since you were so nice

You’d given him pillows and tea and Dr. Pepper and food and even apologised when you couldn’t manage to get your hands onto Honey Buddha Chips - like holy shit it was hard ignoring you

Especially on the third day, when you were having a shower and I guess you had gotten used to him being there because he heard you starting to hum

He paused his typing to try and hear you better because it wasn’t that loud - the water hitting the floor overpowered you, so he couldn’t tell if you were crying or not

He prayed that you weren’t crying. He’d feel like it was his own fault, which would be fair considering his behaviour recently and --

And it was soft, a bit off key and a little sad

His mind completely forgot about his task at hand and drifted to you like it did all the fucking time

Zen always knew you loved to sing, because you told him all about when you were a part of a choir in middle school, high school and even in multiple groups when you were in college

But he hadn’t really heard you sing before, mainly because you were a bit shy

I mean, come on, this guy was a professional actor who played in musicals

You couldn’t really sing in front of him - you were too shy in front of him LOL

But when he came home one day to tell you that he had managed to score a role in [favourite musical], you lost. your. shit.

Like, you got so excited for him, and he thought it was adorable

He let you explain every bit of the plot to you and watched you basically perform it for him, even though he already knew - he just couldn’t get enough of this

It was when you started singing that he fell in love with you all over again

You were just so caught up in the excitement, spinning and singing loudly

It wasn’t perfect, but he could tell you’d had at least some training before - probably from choirs

He loved it, loved your voice

Afterwards, he hugged you so close and whispered lots of praise and sweet things about how amazing and angelic and perfect your voice is and

You weren’t usually one to sing out loud when you weren’t home alone... especially when you were at someone else’s house

But, you practically spent all of your time at Jumin’s house even before you moved in with him

And there was always his maids and chefs and employees and you were never really home alone

So one morning, when you were making yourself some breakfast (you never felt that comfortable having his chef cook for you, since you weren’t the one paying for him to do so) and you thought that fuck it, this house is probably big enough that no one wouldn’t hear me unless they were close by

You had been obsessed with musicals for years, and no matter how many new obsessions you found, you always found yourself coming back to this one

Dear Evan Hansen on Youtube Part 3

This is a little late but oh well

So Disappear and You Will Be Found were pretty great, they're kinda like a pair. You can't listen to one without the other. Beautiful, I just love Ben Platt's voice. He's so awesome, and whoever plays Connor Murphy (I keep forgetting who) is fucking awesome. Connor is definitely my favourite character, even though we don't see that much of him. Anyways

Only Us was so cute, I love Zoe's smooth voice. And Evan's reactions are always so funny and adorable.

Good For You is absolutely my 5th favourite song. The guitar chords are fricking amazing, and the actors are surprisingly good at angry singing. I felt pretty bad for Alana, like she asked for none of Evan's shit. But Jared... Jared is a fucking comedian, but omg I almost cried when he was yelling at Evan. And Evan should NOT have been yelling about getting himself out, he made up a bunch of shit and then it came back to bite his ass. He deserved it.

Words Fail was wonderful, how Ben manages to sing like that is beyond me. I felt terrible for the Murphys, they did nada to earn Evan's shit. Like get your own fucking life, man. Cynthia, my sweet Cynthia,,, I want to find out what happened after the musical's events just for her. Also Larry the Asshole is a favourite of mine in deh fics ;)

Heidi's solo thing, So Big/So Small, was heart achingly beautiful. It gave me literal chills.

The Finale was amazing: it didn't exactly fix everything, but it created a stable, sensible ending and it was nice to see Evan and Zoe meet up again. I still miss Connor though... ;'(

All in all, it was a great musical. I suggest you all go watch it, but it does have swearing and sexual things so. Y'know.

One time I dreamt

I was in this bathroom checking out review on instagram about this frozen yogurt restaurant. I was scrolling down the feed when someone shared Ben Platt’s instagram story. Apparently he had been to the restaurant 3 or 6 days ago and was obsessed with the strawberry shakes. I say, oh hey that’s cool I wonder what he’s doing now so as I’m checking his story while leaving the restroom I realize he’s doing a livestream as he was getting his order—at the same restaurant. So I coolly make my way over in line and I’m freaking out like omg Ben Platt is literally in front of me like idk what to do do I say hi or just leave him alone I don’t want to seem like a crazy fan. So I sorta just awkwardly go to his right to fall in line. This lady goes in the line too (but behind him) and is starts growing when I saw that she didn’t leave a space for me because she thought I was with him. So I go behind him even though that’s not where the line started so I don’t look creepy. Finally, I decide the chance to meet him is never going to happen again, so as I start to stutter a greeting, he starts taking his order. He turns around and says, did you say something. And I freak out and I'm like nO so he throws me a weird look and finishes his order. I then order a strawberry shake because why not, and he says I can go in front of him because his order is going to take a while. We both get our shakes (he gets food as well) and he goes, hey have you ever tried cinnamon in your shake? So I'm like no I haven’t. He puts a sprinkle on his, and helps me take off my lid because my hands are full, but as I start to shake the container, and whole glob comes out. I freak out and make an excuse that I like a lot. We both then go the right to go get our own tables, but I notice something that looks like a container of grenadine on the toppings counter. I’m a sucker for grenadine. So it comes with a little spoon and as I try getting a bit out to try in my shake, I splashed all over my face. It was alcohol. Mortified, I push past Bens table and realize that all my friends had left to go shopping. (I’m on a school trip). So I sit alone at this table when a group of popular girls sit at my table. One tries to make conversation with me but ends up just making fun of me, and one keeps flashing her nipple at everyone. (WHY). So I look around the restaurant and see my friends are coming in, so I make an excuse and dash over to them. There’s no seats left, so I decide to to stand at the corner of the table. One of my friends emphasizes that there no seats and the one she has her stuff on is hers.

So I stand and sip my shake and check instagram, and see that my guy friend was hiding in a bathroom after a bad shoe shopping experience. I think he’s home until I realize we’re in Africa (? I thought we were in New York) with the whole school so he couldn’t be home. I look closer and realize he’s in the restaurant bathroom. I go to the restroom (past Ben platts table, who left. I vaguely remember regretting not giving him my instagram or name) to find him upset that his shopping experience was bad. I tell him that it isn’t that bad, I’ll show you, I can get you a present just come with. So we leave the restaurant and window shop at this cherry themed store for a bit while his order is being made. We then go back after he says he doesn’t want anything right now because of the time limit, we go back. Before we enter the restaurant I tell him about meeting Ben Platt, but I warn that the restaurant was sort of his safe space and he probably doesn’t want to be mobbed by fans today so keep it on the DL. So we walk in, and I see that Ben Platt has literally moved tables to be right next to ours (maybe the nipple flasher freaked him out). My guy friend makes a joking comment about how’s he’s say more attractive than Ben platt, not knowing that the broadway star had not left, but instead just moved. He then makes a comment about how even if Ben tried to rob this restaurant, people would take one look at him and give him a meal for free, with a bonus roll added in (I don’t get dream humor) I attempt to stop him, but can’t stop laughing after seeing the look on ben's face (who was hiding behind a menu). I laugh so much that it turns into my dad's laugh. Ben Platt comes over and asks how our stay is in Africa. Everyone is speechless, but apparently I’ve grown used to his presence. I say that my parents didn’t want me to go, especially my dad because he didn’t like how the country was portrayed, but it is a beautiful country and I love the area here. I say that I’m so glad I saved all my money to go on the school trip.

Maybe I should stop listening to Dear Evan Hansen so much.

Mean Girls @ National Theater 11/11/17, 8pm

Hello! I saw Mean Girls the Musical (currently in pre-Broadway tryout at the National Theater in DC) last weekend! A bunch of people asked me how it was, and I had more than a few tweets worth of stuff to say, so I figured I'd dust off the ol' Tumblr. (I actually tried to write this up on my phone on the way back from DC, but the Tumblr app ate that draft and now it's gone. TUMBLR IS A FUGLY SLUT DO NOT TRUST HER!!!)

Anyway, a few disclaimers before I begin:

I'm not like, a theater critic, and I didn't take any notes, and Tumblr already ate my freshest draft, so these are just like, casual memories/observations as a fan of musical theater and Mean Girls the movie, not an expert professional review.

Mean Girls the Musical is a little #problematic in basically the same way that Mean Girls the Movie is (and uhh basically the same way that everything Tina Fey touches is--some culturally insensitive "hipster racism", some "satirical" fat-shaming, etc). For me personally, my love of the movie is able to overcome the wince-worthy moments, so I'm mostly just going to broadly acknowledge that it's a #problematicfave here at the top and move on. If you're looking for an in-depth breakdown of Mean Girls I'm sure you can find that elsewhere on the internet, but that's not my main endeavor here.

This review will contain spoilers, I guess? The plot of the musical is largely the same as that of the movie, but it did make some changes, and I want to talk about those changes! So if you're planning to see it and want to be surprised, move on. (Or, uhhh I guess if you haven't seen the 2004 movie but don't want to be spoiled for that either….)

OK, I've disclaimed! Let's dig in!

I thought the set design was really smart! It's mostly a set of plain white panels that have projections on them (lockers, mall kiosks, etc). Pre-show they're projected with snippets from the Burn Book, which include hints that the musical is more social media-inclusive than the movie (stuff like "___has 0 followers" etc), although they're still handwritten notes.

There's also a lot of great desk/cafeteria table choreography during the school scenes.

The cast is all great! Super talented, great voices, great comic timing. The youths are mostly unknown to me, though Regina George is played by Taylor Louderman, aka Campbell from Bring it On the musical. Also, Gretchen is played by Ashley Park, an Asian-American actress, so...at least currently, the musical has one fewer white character than the movie. (Every other main character is white, unless you count Mr. Duvall and Kevin Gnapoor.) And Mrs. Heron/Mrs. George/Ms. Norbury are all played by KERRY BUTLER whaaat! I saw her name on the lobby card and freaked out about it; my friend who I went with was like "who?" OK whatever, I guess she's just Broadway famous, not regular famous, but for the record: omg Kerry Butler.

The first act felt a little long and I wouldn't be surprised if a song or two gets cut before the move to Broadway, although I'm not sure which ones? Like…"I Can Be," which is Karen's sexy Halloween song, doesn't contribute anything to the plot but it was SO FUNNY, I hope it stays. Gretchen's solo fretting about her role in the plastics, "What's Wrong With me?" is a good song and all but felt like it came a little early in the show.

One thing the creative team is definitely fully aware of is: which lines/moments from the movie are so iconic that they will require an immediate applause break ("too gay to function," "so fetch," "you go Glen Coco," etc etc etc), and those moments were spaced out at pretty good intervals I thought. For me, it never bogged down the show (the way the later Sharknado movies do, for example). But then, I love and frequently quote Mean Girls the movie. If someone went to see this musical without having seen the movie (why), I imagine they would be like……………..what's happening.

Janis and Damien serve as the narrators, which is a good choice but it minimizes the amount that they interact with Cady. it felt like the creative team was like, "OK, people already like Janis and Damien, so let's move on to really trying to humanize the Plastics!" Which, I get, and it kind of worked, except it came at the expense of Janis and Damien, to the point where it was hard to buy that Cady was even friends with them in the first place. Even as I'm saying that Act I was too long, I wish for at least one more scene of Cady, Janis, and Damien actually being friends?

Also, Kerry Butler and her wigs completely nailed all the mannerisms of the 3 adult women she plays, but she barely sings. She has a duet (as Mrs. George) with Regina called "Stay with Mother" that was a really sweet moment and again, served to humanize Regina and her "cool mom," which I liked. And I get that the GIRLS are the point of Mean Girls and the adults don't have a huge role in things...but also why did you cast Kerry Butler if she's not going to sing more? I'm surprised Ms. Norbury didn't have a song (or even part of one).

The musical also pads out Aaron Samuels' character a little bit more--his backstory is he's being raised by a single mom who lied about their address on school paperwork so he could go to a school in a better district. (This detail gets added to the Burn Book and means that he gets kicked out of school after the Burn Book is unleashed.) It's...fine? The thing about Aaron in the movie is that he's basically a sexy lamp, which I kind of like--it's so much a story about the dynamics between the girls and Aaron is just a status symbol, like, you know...the hot girl in most other high school movies. BUT SURE FINE GIVE HIM A BACKSTORY WHATEVER

The change that I felt most negatively about is that, in the musical, Regina's downfall at the talent show comes a little differently than it did in the movie (where, if you'll recall, after her confusing last-minute choreography change, Gretchen kicked the CD player). Here, her Santa skirt busts open (because she's ~too fat~ from eating Kalteen bars) and embarrassing pics of her fat butt [in sexy underwear] on stage go viral. (Which, you know, would have been hard to do in pre-smart phone 2004). It made me feel much more sympathetic for Regina, which I don't think was the point.

Obviously making Regina gain weight was a big plot point of original Mean Girls, and as previously noted, it's...not great. BUT in the movie it felt more excusable given that Regina was mean to others about their weight, and it also--with the scene at the 1 3 5 store etc--felt a little more like it was going for some slight social commentary, whereas in the musical it comes across a little more like "ew fat people are gross", especially since the butt pic is splashed all over all the background screens on set. (As in the movie--Regina is not even "fat" but I think they padded her butt for this scene? Anyway it's uncomfortable.)

This might be splitting hairs but idk, that specific plot point just seemed, well, um, meaner, and it's never quite...addressed. I'm not even sure what I wish they would have said about it, but they definitely didn't. (I mean, again, I know it's Mean Girls.)

I did like that the musical put more emphasis on Cady's love of math and how shitty it is that acting dumb works as a technique--I really liked that Ms. Norbury invited Aaron to the Mathletes finals so he could see Cady in action and explicitly told Cady that she needed to not diminish herself for a guy. (Which I know that's brushed upon in the movie, but there he doesn't actually go to the Mathletes event and it was a cute moment in the musical.)

Another change that I guess I like is that Kevin Gnapoor ends up with Gretchen, instead of Janis. It's sort of humanizing for Gretchen, and it leaves Janis's sexuality a little more up in the air? (In the movie it kind of comes across like she gets with Kevin just to prove that she's not a lesbian; in the musical Regina still calls her a "dyke"  in the Burn Book which seems like...less of an attack than it was in 2004? Like...I think there's some more that could be unpacked with queer female sexuality being weaponized in this way, and the difference between outing someone against their will vs just calling someone queer as an insult. So...it's not totally clear what the deal is with Janis's sexuality but I think it would be cool if in the musical she just actually was a queer character who was mad about having been outed before she was ready.) Anyway I'm not sure I've said anything coherent here but the POINT is, Kevin/Gretchen. Sure.

Overall I liked all the songs, and there's a good blend of ballads and big songs with desk choreography. Whenever I try to remember how any individual song sounded all my brain will deliver to me is "Good for You" from Dear Evan Hansen though. (I don't have a great ear for music so this isn't necessarily an indictment of Mean Girls the Musical.) Gosh now this is like trying to not think of an elephant, all I can think about is Dear Evan Hansen. I haven't even listened to it in awhile. Umm I do remember that some of the song have some, like, Ladysmith Black Mambazo-type African flavor? Sorry I don't know music words but I bet you know what I mean. (Also PS the event in Madison that Cady skips has been changed from Ladysmith Black Mambazo to GARRISON KEILLOR which is a real downgrade.)

The musical ends shortly after the Spring Fling (where Cady arrives straight from Mathletes, wins spring fling queen, breaks up the crown, etc) and there's a big finale called "You Can Sit With Us". I did somewhat miss the movie's epilogue where we see how the former Plastics have learned to channel their gifts ("There's a 30% chance it's already raining") and the Junior Plastics appear? It also felt a little bit pat considering the kind of edge the movie/musical have in tone? But whatever it's a nice sentiment and a fun song.

Anyway! Those, I guess, are my rambling thoughts about Mean Girls the Musical! If you have any specific questions feel free to ask me and I'll see if I remember the answer!
