#this kind of backstory makes it easier to add my favorite characters into the mix as well

Ok but like my favorite daydream to have is one where I’m part of the pokemon world and like I dont really do battles or anything but some friends and I buy a house in the middle of nowhere (Probably a heavily wooded arear)  that we dont really intend to use since we’re going on our journey soon and just plan to use it as a sort of ‘rest spot’ for when we need a break.

But we figure thats not gonna work when it occurs to us just how long we’re gonna be gone for an no one will be there to keep the house in shape. So I offer to stay behind and take care of it. Im not much of a battler myself and my only partner is a little Oddish that I never actually caught and just kind of decided it liked me enough to hang around. So they go and I start upkeep on the house. 

But I get bored really quickly. Eventually I come to the conclusion that since I’m pretty good at taking care of Oddish I can probably start gardening as a hobby, so I get to that. I start with random plants I find around and pull out the seeds and when they start to grow I venture out more. I find a apricots tree and start to take seeds from that too- and eventually began taking the fruits from that as I try to dig up some information about how to make pokeballs out of them. 

My garden starts to grow and I know Im not going to be able to keep up with it. So my first goal is to get a water type that can help me water the garden. Because Im an idoit with not only no pokeballs but also no idea how to catch a pokemon I just kind of go to a nearby lake and start throwing food into the water and ask (Annoy) any pokemon dumb enough to come by and eat it. Some want to battle, but Oddish and I are not really capable of battle so they get shooed away. A lot of pokemon reject our offer- apparently not very excited at the idea of no battling- but the tiniest little Dratini comes by and is willing to come along so I just kind of let it wrap itself around my arm and we head off...

and then there’s this whole situation where im a dumbass who has no idea that Dratini only learns like two water moves and neither of them are useful but theyre my friend now and they can stay for as long as they want because Oddish and I love them. Still gotta find a water type to help with my plants tho. 

And eventually I find a Magikarp that is a fantastic splasher and set up my garden a little bit closer to a lake so that my new Magikarp friend can water the plants they only way they know how. 

My garden starts to thrive, and I mean like really thrive! With Oddish’s sweet scent Im able to attract more bug pokemon to pollinate the plants- some that even become ‘regulars’ of my garden and hang around long after they've had their fill- as well as some other Randoms that show up to nibble of veggies that I dont know what to do with. eventually I start to notice that a lot more plants are going missing, some even torn up from the roots. The other pokemon lead me to a munchlax that had been tearing up a good portion of my garden and after a little scolding I show the little guy how to gently take the editable part without tearing apart the entire plant. Eventually I have a little garden helper. Munchlax starts by just picking out the plants I ask him to pick and then eventually learns how to care and tend to the plants when I can’t.

All the while Im still trying to figure out the whole Pokeball making thing, which goes terribly but I have all the time in the world to figure it out. I do figure out that i need some mechanical parts and have to (Regrettably) travel back to civilization to get them. 

Theres a city thats a ways away from the house, so I know I’ll have to make a trip there. I leave Munchlax (the gardener), Magikarp (The waterer), Dratini (The ‘guard dog’ lol), and a few other regulars in charge of the garden (That has grown huge by now) while Im gone with Oddish who insists on coming with me. I bring some of my fruits and vegs with me as food since I dont really have the money to buy anything other then what I need- being a hermit in the forest for so long. 

So we head off with a smooch to each my my friends heads and promise to be back in three days (One to get there, one to search for parts, and the last to head back) 

While traveling in the woods we find some pokemon that won't take “No, we don't battle” as an answer and Oddish- who has technically been training in an unconventional way (Aka, using moves to help me with my garden and sometimes chasing off misbehaving pokemon)- chases them off swiftly. By the time we make it to the city my baby has evolved into a Gloom! Weirdly enough everyone in the city gives us a wide berth while holding their nose. I can’t figure out why though.

I wander through town completely oblivious, simply focused on my goal. While there people whisper about some dangerous organization making its way through the region and worried that they’ll be next but I pay no mind to them, what kind of silly story is that anyway. Someone even has the audacity to accuse me of being part of it! Still, I pay them no mind and Gloom makes quick work of their team when they attempt to battle me. I go back to my search and eventually find a poke center where I can cozy up for the night before head off to buy my stuff. 

It’s the off season for trainers to come and go (where the beginning of spring is usually for young kids to start their journey) so it’s just me and a few stragglers. I chat with some people and we talk about pokemon. At some point I admit that Gloom isnt technically ‘my’ pokemon and just kind of like a buddy that can stay as long as they please. No one there really gets it but Idc. I give people the fruits and veggies i brought along- some trade items and others give money which I take just in case before heading on our way. 

Stuff happens, I get my parts, and along the way I find a shiny charmander that I make friends with and offer to bring them home since they’re pretty skittish and not that interested in battle- and since charmander is such a popular starter pokemon people are almost hellbent on catching the little guy for battle. I feed some stray Meowths and accidently spend an extra day in the city before returning home.

At home Im nearly bombarded by Munchlax and Dratini- who seem pretty frantic- I dont really know what happened but apparently there was some chaos that tore up almost half my garden while I was away and left the two pretty shaken up. Thankfully no one was hurt but I go into a panic because I can’t find Magikarp! 

And am only sent into more of a panic when what was once my little Magikarp bursts out of Their lake- now a fully grown Gyarados. I nearly pee myself in shock but accept the big guy with opened arms. Gyarados seemed to have caused most of the damage, maybe in a rage induced frenzy? or maybe from fighting something very big and very dangerous?  I’ll probably never get the whole picture. So instead of dwelling on it I start to get back to work on my garden.

I continue on with life, receiving letters from my friends via messenger starly (who eventually becomes a Staravia, then a Staraptor) People begin to stop by my house more often- apparently the travelers I met that night told others about me and my willingness to trade (Surprisingly good) food for Knick knacks. Dratini, Charmander, and munchlax evolve once as well. Every now and then a trainer wants to battle, and I let them know that we only battle when the others are up for it. Sometimes they are, and sometimes they aren't. either way the more forceful trainers are ushered away by my very annoyed Vileplume who is happy to offer them a good wiff of their flower. all in all life is pretty good.

Eventually my ability to make pokeballs improve, and I finally make a fully functional pokeball and leave it on my workbench overnight- only to find it in use he next day. Dragonair- whos grown to be quite the little smartass- had claimed the ball as their own.

Whelp, whatever, it was their decision and I was chill with it. Sadly, a few others get jealous of Dragonairs newfound spot and demand a ball of their own. So I spend a few sleepless nights crafting more only to find that Ive run out of parts. With only two working Pokeballs that Dragonair and Vileplume claimed residence of I leave Snorlax, Charmeleon, and Gyarados to care for the garden while I head back to the city. 

Having traveled to and from there a few times I know a good amount of people and pokemon alike (The local strays always clamoring to harass me for food) and I’ve actually started to do business with a local mom and pa shop that buys my stuff whenever I’m in town. It’s a life I never thought possible, but it’s the best life Ive ever lived.

There’s still rumored and people still suspect me, but it becomes less and less as time goes on. Unbeknownst to me many of the trainers that stop by my house on their way to the city also speak very highly of me and I am a welcomed sight to weary travelers. I just go about my day happy with life like a dumbass.

I get challenged a few times, and because of my unconventional way of training my team I’m considered an enigma to people who have been taught how to properly battle. Most of the time My pokemon just kind of... know what they need to do and Im used as an extra pair of eyes to help cover them. They trust my judgment and I trust them. 

It does scare some trainers when all I do is stare in silence while my pokemon just go ham, but whatever. 

Generally I set up a nice life both in and outside of the city. Living my best life like some sort of weird poke hermit. I don't know when or how it happens but I somehow become a sort of ‘destination’ spot for trainers. In no way am I an official battle spot, but I somehow become a halfway house for trainers and travelers alike. A lot of the time if youre looking for a battle you have to get through all the ‘regulars’ that want to make sure youre not here to cause problems, and then a very protective Gyarados that will obliterate you if they feel you have any bad intentions. 

after all that youll be met with a garden spreading an acre out, pokemon freely wandering around just minding their own business and enjoying life, a fiercely protective shiny Charizard and a kindly Snorlax in a farmers hat too small for their head. Apricot saplings line the house and I’ll most likely be chilling on the front porch, or maybe working with Snorlax in the garden. I’ll welcome strangers kindly and offer them some food or a place to stay the night depending on the time of day. 

The world comes to a halt there, a peaceful little bubble where people can take a moment to enjoy the world and not think about their next more. There is no rush. No worries. I am happy, and maybe for a moment you can be too.

ARC V Anniversary Day 12

Disccusion prompt: Favorite ships?

ARC V has really made me ship a lot of things, be it with or without taking canon into account just because of the potential, so buckle up ‘cause this is gonna be long. I kept it to a top 10 or otherwise I’d be here all day. Honorable mentions to prodigy and whistle, as they barely didn’t make it.

With that out of the way, let’s go!

10. Natureshipping

I love many of the bgirl/bgirl ships so naturally I’d love all of them being together… Not only for the awesome aesthetic though, I also think their personalities would fit so nicely with each other and they’d like having the chance to meet and talk about everything they’ve gone through; I have so many fluffy headcanons for them and I really just wanna see them bonding and being happy together!

09. Frypanshipping

Probably the oddest ship in this list, I sure as hell didn’t expect to like them so much, but Crow really helped in making Shingo become a better person, and poor Shingo clutching onto his card post BB-arc the entire time made me so emotional. You could tell they had a good relationship and were very happy to be fighting together after that, they’re so cute.

08. Wingshipping

Look at these two precious babs… On a visual level they both have some of my favorite designs in all of ARC V and they’re both counterparts, so I was bound to at the very least consider pairing them up, but when they actually had a rather peaceful meeting in canon all things considered, and immediately valued each other? When you take into account all the possible fluff and angst you could make with setting these two into any scenario? I was soo sold. And they both share the egao philosophy, they’d definitely get along… It’s just fun to think about ideas with them.

07. Janushipping

I have a weak spot for Fusion/XYZ ships because I think there’s so much room for growth and forgiveness if done right, and while I didn’t expect Dennis and Ruri to actually have some backstory together, this relationship has all I could wish for both of their characters. It adds personal conflict to their stories (especially on Ruri’s side, something that isn’t about being related to Shun or Yuto) and leaves room for Dennis to be able to apologize and improve himself after the war; not to mention their aesthetics mesh beautifully together. It’s so easy to picture them awkwardly falling back into an acquaintanceship and figuring out together where to go from there.

06. Fruitshipping

aka the ‘these two care so fucking much for each other, I don’t know how you can watch arc v and at the very least not appreciate their relationship’ ship.

I don’t know what to say that hasn’t been said about them already, honestly. I was admittedly… Reticent, let’s say, to ship this at first, because the relationships between the protagonist and lead girl in YGO shows tend to be lackluster at best for me, but they built each other up as equals from day one and have a genuinely heartwarming friendship, where they know they can lean on each other for support no matter what. They’re one of the most important people for the other and you can feel that throughout the entire show. To this day they hold the honour of being the only protag/main girl ship I can stand romantically.

Though… since they’re so well-executed in canon, I don’t feel the need to seek fanworks of them because there’s no real conflict in their relationship, if that makes sense, haha.

05. Mysteryshipping

This is sort of to be expected as I enjoy all the relationships between this trio separately (even if Yuto/Yuzu’s was short-lived); this shot in the 2nd ED is what got me to even become interested in the OT3 potential, though it was after I finished the show. Yuzu had clearly been having a period of self-doubt in S1 because of the Yuto situation, and thanks to episodes 36-37 we got a wonderful showcase of how well Yuto and Yuya would have clicked, so if Yuzu happened to explain her problem to either of them and caused them to meet in not-so-tragic circumstancies… You can only dream of the possibilities. And thanks to their bonds being established early on, you can expand on them during or post canon events, both in a positive and negative light. We’ve seen teamwork and discussions between all of them already; it’s fun to try to translate that dynamic into a three-way interaction (cranky but overly protective Yuto being dragged around by his two enthusiastic Standard S/Os who also happen to love each other very much, for one).

04. Musicboxshipping

Gosh, these two are just so cute together. Sora was heavily influenced by both Yuya and Yuzu, but you can tell their relationship is really important by the way they both act with each other, especially during the Synchro Arc. Sora taught Yuzu how to Fusion Summon and thanks to that Yuzu was able to become stronger; but Sora also was able to form a solid connection with her and basically made his first true friend in all of his life. They support each other and care about each other so much that even after they know of Sora’s true colours, Yuzu still has blind faith in him, and Sora returns that feeling by saving her from her Duel crash and even being unable to carry the mission Academia gave him because he treasured their friendship that much. Their little master/apprentice moments are adorable and really give off the fluffy energy these two have around each other; and of course Sora’s Mad Chimera and Yuzu’s Bloom Prima dancing together was beautiful too! That was such a lovely scene that made me really appreciate the trust they have in each other.

03. Swiftshipping

I shipped them together from the moment I learned both of them had been kidnapped, and I was really happy when I saw that their designs fit well with each other’s color scheme. They’re both very caring for people they hold close and since there was no indication of the opposite, for the longest time I assumed they were in a cell together. Imagining both of them trying to comfort and support each other through their predicament got me really invested in their possible relationship, and even if it didn’t turn out like I’d hoped in the end, I still had a solid grasp on their personalities by that time, and I couldn’t let go of all the AUs and concepting I’d made for them. It should be said that I have a really weak spot for f/f ships, and this one hit many of my favorite tropes (stuck in same bad situation where they both would try to be strong for each other’s sake, different growing-up backgrounds; to name a few) so my investment only went up from there. I love them so much.

02. Triggershipping

I didn’t expect them to interact much, much less positively, and much less for them to grow to care for each other so much in a short span of time. They have such a friendly and beautiful relationship; Yugo hugging Yuzu because he thought she was Rin and poor Yuzu becoming a blushing mess was a sure way to make me interested from the get go in them, haha. And it only got better from there! Even though she was a complete stranger to him, Yugo still tried to comfort Yuzu to the best of his abilities and looked out for her, fully trusting everything she said, even if to someone else it would’ve sounded like a crazy story. And you can tell Yuzu grows very comfortable with being around Yugo; their small scene with the domestic bantering and her pulling out her fan says that much, as she only uses it with people she really cares for. Whenever they’re on screen together you know you’re gonna be in for a good time, their interactions are always funny and heartwarming.

Yugo saying that Yuzu will always live on his heart in a similar manner to what Yuri said of Rin made me realise how much she really meant to him, and both of them cheering for each other in their Friendship Cup duels was adorable. But if you put their situation into context their relationship is… really sad, as Yugo has lost Rin and Yuzu is all by herself in an unknown dimension. They have that perfect mix of fluff and angst to work with that I love in ships. I adore their relationship; even if it was born out of less than desirable circumstancies, they made it work and learned to appreciate and love each other. It’s always a source of inspiration for me!

(And Yugo’s lack of knowledge of what personal space is just made it even easier to ship them)

01. Counterpartshipping

ARC V has always had the uncanny ability of making me consider ships in the span of a single episode because of the wonderful character interactions. But these two… These two really take the cake. I’m not exaggerating when I say the relationship and development between them has made me cry.    

Anyone who has heard me talk about YGO may know how much I like them. As I mentioned in a previous post where I talked about my favorite characters, I hadn’t expected to enjoy Yuto’s character so much, and much less this ship. Yuto remains a latent force of encouragement for Yuya during the entire show; as Reiji beautifully points out on his duel with Yuya after the Battle Royale fiasco, Yuya’s immediate connection with Yuto thanks to their shared ideology was the bond that allowed him to perform a XYZ Summon. His concern for Yuto in episode 37 was so palpable that it hurt; Yuto went from being some random shady dude who was beating up his friend Sora to a kind damaged person who believed in Yuya’s potential to make people happy in a way that he no longer could. It’s really interesting for me to analyse how deeply they affected each other in a short span of time. We’d seen that Yuto was a very protective person thanks to his interactions with Yuzu, so when he said that he didn’t want to hurt anyone else and ended up protecting Yuya at the cost of his own life… It drove the point home, Yuto really saw Yuya as someone worth protecting and that made it so much more painful.

Yuya also later on refers to their dialogue as a vow/promise, despite the fact that Yuto never said so, which really shows just how much thought he put into his words; to the point where those very words managed to snap him out of Berserk Mode when he was about to fight Sora. It really moved me, and the soul-crushing sensation I felt then stayed fresh in my mind right until the final season, which made me fall in love with them even more. They argued, they had fallouts, but their undying trust for each other still rose through all the problems. Yuto trusted Yuya so much that he essentially told him he was okay with falling to darkness because he knew Yuya would be okay and he’d still believe in him no matter what; that moment nearly made me actually tear up because it shows how much they’d helped each other grow.

They’re hands down one of the, if not my most favorite ship in all of the YGO series, and they’ve spurred my creativity so much. I love making AUs or analysing their interactions. They made me interested in creating content for other people to enjoy after I’d hit a stalemate 5 months ago, I’ll just never be able to express how much I love them and how grateful I am that they got to meet.

Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo

Six thieves that should now be drowning in riches are welcomed home as fugitives, their coffers empty of the money they were promised. Kaz’s master plan to break into the Ice Court had some minor mishaps but they made it out in mostly one piece, only to arrive back in Ketterdam and realize they’d been set up. With Inej kidnapped by Jan Van Eck and Kuwei Yul Bo still in their possession, Kaz and his crew have become the most wanted people in Ketterdam.  Will Kaz and his crew be able to con themselves out of this one or has dirty hands finally run out of tricks?

So this is my second time reading series and I forgot how much I loved this book despite one very specific part that I know everyone hates *glares at author*. But despite that one moment, this book is full of wonderful things. For example, Jesper’s dad? Colm Fahey is the sweetest man and I love the fact that Nina notices this, she always sees the good in people which is one of the many reasons I love her so much. Also, I feel like now that we’ve gotten to know the characters really well since the first book which makes it easier to read this one. We know their motivations and what drives them even though we’re still getting some bits and pieces of backstory which just adds to the characterization and the overall wonderfulness that makes up this world. One thing that I loved throughout this entire story is the relationships that are developing. For example Kaz and Inej. It’s great, other than the fact that Kaz is a stubborn bastard and won’t let anyone get to close which really pisses me off, but in the end, it all works out. And like Inej’s father said find a boy who knows your favorite flower. Kaz did that in the first book I love that she makes him smile it’s good for him he’s also really defensive of her and it just makes me so happy like, yes. You love her I know you do even if you don’t. And then there’s Nina and Matthias. They’re so fucking adorable I might start barfing up kittens and glitter and rainbows. I love that she’s so shameless, the poor guy gets so flustered it’s adorably hilarious. The part where she says he’s better than waffles and he says not to say things she doesn’t really mean and he called her ���my love” I almost cried. Also, Matthias is just so great, I love him. He loves Nina so much and he’s so sweet to her and I love the fact that he’s learning to appreciate the different mechanics of being part of the group and it just improves his character so much. Getting more of his backstory is really important, it makes him seem less cold. Also, we all know how much I love Nina. When she was suffering from parem I was so worried, but now that she has this weird death power she’s learning to use and she’s getting her old spark back it’s so great to see. She also brought up a brigade of fire breathing kittens which is an added bonus. I love the way her mind works. I want to be her. And then she went and added Wylan and Jesper to the mix of relationships and my heart just combusted. They’re so cute. Like Wylan’s first thought when he met Jesper for the first time was that he had the nicest lips. Like what kind of gay shit it that? It’s just perfect. And when Wylan got his face back and Jesper almost dropped his coffee. Ugh, I can’t even describe how impossibly cute that is. And then they finally kissed. I was screeching, they’re so fricken cute. And when Jesper’s dad was talking to Wylan and telling him that he’d be good for Jesper I was so happy because he’s so right, they’re perfect for each other. Then there’s Wylan’s backstory. Jan Van Eck can go die I hate him so much. How could you do that to your son? And your wife? Like the fuck is that? I want to murder Van Eck, have I said that yet? But I got to see the exact moment his life started falling apart all thanks to his wonderful son, that’s almost good enough for me. On a completely different note, Inej and Nina’s friendship is my favorite thing. Girls empowering each other is so important and I love them so much because they’ve both been through so much in different ways and they’ve just created this bond that is so important for their characters. And then I just want to talk about Jesper for a bit. I love him so much, you guys have no idea. He’s such a wonderfully diverse character with a sad but great backstory and I love him, he’s got doubts and character flaws and uses humor to cover up his shortcomings but he evolves so much over the course of these two books. Also, the part when Kaz says he’s missed at the Slat ugh, just knowing how much that would mean to him, broke my little heart. I love this book so much but by far my favorite moment was when Kaz and Inej met up at the harbor and he gave her the boat. Like yes, Kaz. The way into a girls heart is to buy her a boat, ah, true love. And then he got her family?! Like wow, and she wanted him to meet them and he got about as flustered as I think Kaz can get and he was so happy when she laughed. Ugh, I can’t even express how much I love them. It really gave a sense that some good might come into their lives and that there was hope for them and that really helped the book end on a high note. One last thing, As much as I love this book and as brilliant and Leigh is, how could she be stupid enough to kill Matthias? Nobody was supposed to die, it would’ve made the book that much better if he hadn’t. But in the end, things really worked out well, I really loved how they tied up most of these stories and as much as I wanted more, the book ended well. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, the characters just pull you into this world where anything is possible. 10/10.

But I got to see the exact moment his life started falling apart all thanks to his wonderful son, that's almost good enough for me. On a completely different note, Inej and Nina’s friendship is my favorite thing. Girls empowering each other is so important and I love them so much because they've both been through so much in different ways and they've just created this bond that is so important for their characters. And then I just want to talk about Jesper for a bit. I love him so much, you guys have no idea. He's such a wonderfully diverse character with a sad but great backstory and I love him, he's got doubts and character flaws and uses humor to cover up his shortcomings but he evolves so much over the course of these two books. Also, the part when Kaz says he's missed at the Slat ugh, just knowing how much that would mean to him, broke my little heart. I love this book so much but by far my favorite moment was when Kaz and Inej met up at the harbor and he gave her the boat. Like yes, Kaz. The way into a girls heart is to buy her a boat, ah, true love. And then he got her family?! Like wow, and she wanted him to meet them and he got about as flustered as I think Kaz can get and he was so happy when she laughed. Ugh, I can't even express how much I love them. It really gave a sense that some good might come into their lives and that there was hope for them and that really helped the book end on a high note. One last thing, As much as I love this book and as brilliant and Leigh is, how could she be stupid enough to kill Matthias? Nobody was supposed to die, it would've made the book that much better if he hadn't. But in the end, things really worked out well, I really loved how they tied up most of these stories and as much as I wanted more, the book ended well. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, the characters just pull you into this world where anything is possible. 10/10.

My day wasn't very interesting, but it was rather calming. I didn't particularly do much- which I'm very thankful for. Sometimes nothing is a very good thing to do. I filled out a few forms, played the piano- oh, I can do that too. Add that to my houseknight qualities. Good music, whenever you ask for it. Most of the day I just sat down and rested my mind and body. Exactly what I needed. 😊

What are your dreams like, my princess? Do they make sense? I have the most vivid dreams, and I have to say, my brain's worldbuilding abilities are astounding. There's so much backstory to every dream, and the scenery is well... realistic. I often dream about what I think about, which means I dream about Haikyuu!! a lot. It's interesting to see how 2D characters get placed into a 3D world- I still haven't figured it out yet.

in a way i’m really relieved that i come across as carefree. i am a bit of a,,, worrier, generally. but my mindset for things most of the time is to limit expectations (that way everything is exciting and no one is disappointed) and experiencing things and moving on from them. even though negative feelings are unfavorable, i think they’re important to process before moving on. but, you’re right and letting go is hard, especially when it comes to strong feelings about things (and you, my knight, do not strike me as someone that feels things halfway. i have to say i’m much the same)

Angel, the Writer: An Interview

This is a post about my writing preferences and habits (my name is Angel, it’s not a show-based pseudonym). 

Why? Because my bestie tagged me in her version. And I love @waywardjoy​ bunches and bunches.

And since I’m a wordy bitch, I’m going to add a read more after the second question.

1. What inspires your work most? (The show it is based on, the actor who portrays a certain character, maybe the character itself? It could even be an experience.)

Can I say all of the above? The complexity of Dean Winchester’s character and my habit of (and training as an English teacher wouldn’t let me stop) analyzing his character led to writing about him, and he wouldn’t have any appeal hardly if he weren’t brought to life by the gorgeous and talented Jensen Ackles. The variety of the show, the ever-changing plot lines, villains, characters, etc., means that even though I’ve always been a loyal-to-canon girl, I never run out of ideas to write about. And then, most importantly, there’s the experience of writing on tumblr--the amazing feedback I’ve gotten from the readers and writers of fanfic on tumblr has been humbling, intoxicating, and it inspires me as a writer more than they probably realize. I do it for you all... and because every time I get a compliment it makes my day. :)

2. What is your favorite fandom to write for?

Supernatural. *See above answer.

3. Which point of view* do you prefer writing in? (First-person, third-person) *I changed perspective to point of view, because I’m an English teacher, and I care that this kind of thing is correct. :P Perspective is who is telling the story. Point of view is the narration style used. Message me if you want to understand this in better detail.

When it comes to fanfiction, I write almost exclusively reader-insert. In that format, I prefer reader’s perspective and 2nd person point of view: “you hugged Dean close to you, as tightly as you could, worried about what would happen if you let go of him.” In that format, I use “Y/N” only during dialogue. When I’m doing the story from Dean’s perspective, I usually do third person limited and use Y/N a lot more. I have experimented with all of them.

In my non fanfic writing, I prefer alternating third person limited. (I know the thoughts of one character at a time, and I switch between characters in different chapters.)

4. Do you prefer writing reader fics or OCs?

Before fanfic, the idea of writing reader insert had never occured to me, so for more that a decade and a half of writing actual stories, I only had OCs. I LOVE the freedom of writing reader-insert, and my audience seems to prefer it. :)

5. Do you prefer writing longer works or one shots?

Almost everything I’ve written for tumblr has been one shots simply for time purposes--both times I’ve done a series (at the 1/3 mark of one right now) it takes me forever to finish it. 

I like longer stories; as I mentioned earlier in this post, I’m a wordy bitch, and I live for character analysis. Longer fics allow you to do that. But one shots are more realistic with my adult life being so busy and wanting to post more frequently than once per three months.

It’s also easier to write a smut fic (which most of mine are) if you know you can conclude it after the orgasm without worrying about the morning after awkwardness--probably the same reason my usual spn character Dean likes one night stands. 

6. Do you take requests?

Not anonymously. If it’s a friend asking for me to write something, I’ll add it to my to-write list. Sometimes I do a request type celebration when I hit a new follower count goal, and new followers with whom I’m not friends yet can certainly join in then...or just get to know me. I think I’m pretty friendly, and the message box is always open. If you like SPN and/or my fics, then we already have a topic to talk about, so let’s chat!

7. Do you enjoy getting random Asks?

Yes, with one exception--the tag others things. Most of them are sweet: “You’re one of my favorite bloggers and you bring sunshine to others. Don’t let this stop with you! Copy paste this message into the asks of 5 of your favorite blogs!” 

Those bug me. I delete them immediately.

I don’t like being told I’m kind/beautiful/smart etc. if the only reason I’m being told is because the person who sent it was passing on a chain message. If you value your followers, think of a nice message of your own, preferably a personal one to either yourself or to your intended recipient, and go put it in their asks.

I LOVE THOSE SO MUCH!!

And they do exist. I can point out several I have received, and I have a policy where I go send between 5-10 to different followers with genuine individual-related compliments and love when I see a bit of anon hate reblogged. It’s my way of spreading some positivity.

Random asks about me I’ll answer depending on how personal they are. I have to keep my anonymity on here because of my real-world job. Random asks about my writing I will always answer.

8. What inspires the names for OCs (or extra character names) in your works? Do you pick them from real life or just select them at random? A mix?

Nothing is really random in my fics--writing, analyzing writing, reading, etc. that’s my legitimate career, and that carries over to my fic writing. 

I am a HUGE canon nerd. My supporting characters are usually characters from the show, whom I try to bring to life accurately. Even my AU series is only peopled by characters from the show and my reader. 

I usually give a little bit of backstory and characterization to my reader persona, so I guess they are partial OCs, and those are tailored to fit the individual fic (an antiques dealer in a cursed object case, a rodeo arena manager on a case where I wanted a cowboy!Dean fantasy, etc.) with a bit of personal flair thrown in--an accent, a habit of mine, a favorite music, etc. 

My only real major character OC I’ve ever done was an invented archangel named Sariel, and I got his name from researching angels and archangels online--it hadn’t been used on SPN, but he had an interesting biblical history that I could mold to my purpose for his motivation in the plot of my first series. I gave him an entire backstory drabble where he actually tells the reader his history and plans. His tone and voice were meant to help characterize him.

9. If your story(ies) have OCs, are their appearances based on real people or celebrities? If so, who?

Oops, I think I answered this in the last question.

10. How long have you been writing fanfiction?

I posted my first full one shot on this Tumblr account on March 13, 2016. I think I’ve been writing fan fiction for a lot longer than that though; I can remember as a child trying to write my own story with kids who could shape-shift into animals (thank you K.A. Applegate and the Animorphs series). I definitely tried my hand at a Nancy Drew-esque story in my preteen years. As a young teenager I plotted out an entire fantasy series that was in large part original, but also took a lot of inspiration from my reading of the Lord of the Rings. From late teens through college it was sometimes-paranormal series romances (like the paperbacks I read constantly, and even Twilight when I eventually caved in and read it my senior year of college). 

I’ve always been inspired by the fandoms and works that I obsessively read and analyze, and they show up in my writing. Legitimate fanfiction though, where I use the characters and work of another writer and put my own spin on it? That didn’t happen until I made my first tumblr account. Fanfiction sucked me in and intrigued me in early 2015, but I didn’t write any. Then I discovered the smut fics with Spn after I started watching the show in 2015. I wrote a few 100-300 word blurbs for fun on my old account before I decided to write a smutty one...which required the creation of a new account for privacy reasons with my career.

Hey guys, it's me, Butch Hartman. How you doing? Thanks for watching my channel this week.

This week, I'll be drawing the Danny Phantom characters as if it were ten years older. Check it out.

Tucker: That's the cool thing about your powers, man, there's no downside. Give me five! *blasted into booth* I'm ok!

(Ignore the Pause display - I forgot to hide it for this image) First, we'll start off by drawing everyone's favorite tech nerd, Tucker Foley. It was funny when I was first creating Tucker, it was back in the days when the movie Rush Hour was out. Chris Tucker was a star of Rush Hour, so ok, that Tucker could be his first name. I always loved Eddie Murphy in the Beverly Hills Cop movies and his name was Axel Foley. So we took Axel Foley's last name and combined it with Chris Tucker, so that's where Tucker Foley came from.

Now, it's time to update him a little bit. Start off by giving him a bit of an updated hairstyle, updated glasses, and even an updated hat. Maybe more of a Rastafarian hat kind of thing, dreads that stick out of his hat and a little soul patch of hair under his lip there. Of course the hoodie and of course he'd got a much more updated phone. I add a presidential pin because he was the mayor of Amity Park at the end of Phantom Planet so I figure, hey, maybe he's running for president - maybe he works for the president. You know, another route for the character of Tucker I was thinking as I was drawing all these, I think he'd be a modern-day Steve Jobs. I think he's so smart and it meant so many things, I think Tucker is a huge part of either the Apple Corporation or of - or the Foley Corporation.

Now, I thought I'd start off with giving Tucker some tech this time, if Tucker's going to help Danny fight ghosts. He's going to have a drone cause he's gonna want to fly like Danny. Instead of giving him glasses, I gave him some goggles that are going to be kind of high-tech he could see like targeting devices inside the goggles that help him control the drone with his own eyes maybe. But this new design of Tucker I've completely changed his clothing colors you can see. I did incorporate the old colors from the old Tucker into his hat: the green pants, the yellow shirt, and the red cap are all incorporated into this new Rasta hat. Old Tucker enthusiasts, there are the colors for old Tucker right in there.

Sam: Goth haiku. Despair without end. *whisper* There's a ghost. *shouting* Utter blackness, nothingness. *whisper* There's a ghost. *shouting* Dora is a ghost.

The character of Sam was tricky because we wanted a girl on the show and we wanted - we almost, at the very beginning, I thought I wanted to give her a psychic power. We were gonna go in with a psychic power where she could, like, mentally talk to Danny all the time but I'm not a big fan of psychic so we got rid of that idea really quick. We decided to make her goth-y because back when Danny Phantom was created, Goths were very big. They were - they were all over the place. They were sort of the hipster of the early 2000s. They don't take everything for face value, and then Sam would be someone who would actually believe in these ghosts that Danny was fighting so we thought that'd be kind of a cool aspect of her character.

Same thing with Tucker, I'm going to just do a few experimental drawings of Same here. I'm going to age her up ten years and see how that feels. I've never drawn her ten years older so let's see what happens. So this version here of Sam, I thought Sam is sort of Danny's sidekick. A lot of the movies that have come out lately - out of the comic book-based movies lately that have come out, you know, one of my favorites is Captain America: Winter Soldier. I love The Avengers movies, and I thought it'd be pretty cool if Danny Phantom was basically Captain America, Sam would probably be Black Widow. So I decided to give Sam kind of a uniform, like a Black Widow crime fighter outfit where she helped Danny fight ghosts with her arsenal of awesome guns and machinery. By this time, Danny and Sam and Tucker have been fighting ghosts about ten years so they really know what they're doing by this point.

We're going to try another version of Sam and we're going to try and update her into a more hipsterfied because, again, her clothes, just like Tucker’s, are more early-2000s, kind of 1990s but this sort of Sam, just kind of - I guess, a regular everyday life ten years older. Put her top knot coming through her hat. I do like this version, but I prefer the superhero one a little more.

And for this version of Sam, I was just having fun and goofing around, still experimenting. I decided to keep old Sam, age her up a little bit, and add a jacket.

This Sam looks outright horrifying. Seriously. That face will be in my nightmares

Now, I thought I'd really go to town and kind of give her the full-fledged superhero thing and giver her some ghost fighting armor. And just really see what she would look like if she took it really, really seriously and became kind of a Lara Croft sort of a ghost fighting gal.

Now here is Sam - it's kind of a mix of a bunch of versions of Sam. It's kind of the Lara Croft meets the Black Widow meets Sam ten years later, and I was just having so much fun I decided to really do an iPad sketch here on the iPad pro. I use the Procreate program which replays your drawings back. She's got weaponry, she's got Maddie Fentons's goggles on her head. I tooks Sam's original colors and I just kind of switched them around a bit. I added her, like, Matrix leather jacket. I took the purple circle off of her chest, incorporated it into the jacket and I gave her a Danny Phantom logo because she's on Team Phantom. IO figured by now she and Tucker are full-time ghost fighters and they are just all on Team Phantom and I think maybe by this time in their life the Danny Phantom logo's become a franchise since everybody around the world knows it.

Now it's time for the man himself: Mr. Danny Phantom. It was going to be Danny Phantom and the Specter Detectors - was be like a Scooby-Doo type of show and they were going to be Ghostbusters-like with packs on their back and stuff but then I decided to make him just: super hero, and have him have the ghost powers himself, you know. And I was even going to give him like an owl, like a white owl named Spooky, and at the time Harry Potter movies were just coming out and Nickelodeon had said you can't give him an owl, Harry Potter's got an owl. I was even going to give him a phantom motorcycle to drive around in and I thought that'd by cool, but he can fly so he didn't need the motorcycle. So what I did was, later on in the show, I couldn't give Danny a motorcycle but we gave one of the ghost villains, Johnny 13, a motorcycle. So that's sort of a backstory on Danny Phantom.

He ages up and his costume ages up too. I think over the years he's been experimenting with different forms of armor, different forms of jumpsuits, you know. Who knows what's been going on for the last ten years in the Fenton labs. He's always got the Fenton Thermos with him. Like he's got it on his hip now instead just having it randomly - be carrying it, he wears it like on his utility belt. Attempt number one!

So this next version of Danny is more like if he was in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I looked at some pictures of Captain America and just some other characters like Ant-man - things like that, and just trying to update his costume a little more. He's ten years older, he's got a ten year older body, he's like 25 years old but he's really in shake cause he fights ghosts all the time. And so this is more of an armor version of Danny. Kind of getting more to an updated - sort of a sleek sort of look.

I wanted to incorporate elements of Dark Danny in here now, not that this Danny is a bad guy. But I do want to age him up and I thought some of his ghost-y traits would kind of maybe - he would enhance them a little bit. He kind of is embracing his ghost side a little bit so he maybe make his hair a little and have it flow, you know, even giving him a cape. This belt I'm adding is a belt I'm borrowing from one of my very first original concept drawings of Danny Phantom from years and years ago - an homage to that old drawing.

Here's an iPad pro sketch incorporating all the elements that I just showed you and I also thought it was really cool to add some of his dark Danny-ness with his hair. It really was bugging me, the Fenton Thermos, you know, to catch ghosts with. I've always loved the Fenton Thermos because he has to, obviously, catch the ghosts, but it's always been kind of cumbersome and he kind of has to hold it  in his hand. So a friend of mine said, hey why don't you just build it into his glove - build the thermos into his glove, or the technology into his gloves, so Danny's going to have a Fenton Glove, actually, power his suit whenever he sucks up a ghost he gets power from that ghost which continues to power his suit so he can catch more ghosts so you could see the power coursing through his suit, through the D, and through the belt and even through the boots and the gloves. I think that's really a cool idea and, who knows, you might just see that actually animated someday.

QUINTIS S4 SPOILER: MY THEORY

Here is my take on the SCORPION/QUINTIS related SPOILER from ASK AUSIELLO Q&A from end of May. The one with “what’s in the plans next for Quintis now that they’re married”.

The quote & my spoilery speculation... below. Long post...as usual. 

Quote:  Now that Happy and Toby have tied the knot, executive producer Nick Santora is confident that another major development is in sight for the couple — like, say, a pint-sized addition to Team Scorpion. “Like all things, the answers can be found in elementary school: First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes something in a baby carriage,” Santora hints. Though he says he’s in no rush to bring a baby genius onto the show, Santora believes a pregnancy is “the natural progression” for Happy and her new husband. “One of my favorite speeches of the season was when Happy said she always wanted to wait outside the school for her kid. She still wants that, and Toby wants that.” says Santora. 

HERE IS A LIST OF THINGS THAT THIS SPOILER COULD MEAN :

THE ONE, WHERE I DISSECT THE QUOTE/MEANING OF WORDS/PHRASES USED, LISTING SOME OF THE POSSIBLE MEANINGS: 

“First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes something in a baby carriage” 

While these characters are different, this is still a network tv show, and for fictional characters like these the “right time” usually happens after the wedding/marriage day. 

Though we do live in the 21st century/year 2017, things like pregnancy before marriage are not usually done on tv... (unless it’s a plot about teen pregnancy or something else). So I did expect the Quintis baby to make his/her appearance only after Quintis wedding. And since they are now married, the show can continue taking the traditional steps with this pairing. 

“Nick Santora is confident that another major development is in sight for the couple — like, say, a pint-sized addition to Team Scorpion” 

This means that as hinted since mid-season 2, the show/writers do plan for Quintis to have a family/kids (either biological or adopted). This does not say WHEN they plan to add baby Quintis to the team. Is it an "after the honeymoon” early s4 plan, or planned to happen sometime during s4, or it it saved for s4 end/finale, or even s5 or later. 

All it says is confirm that the writers do intend to have Quintis have a child. One thing that the quote does hint at is that there are plans for biological child/pregnancy plot (not just the option of adoption). 

There could also be many reasons for the vagueness of the quote. It is possible Nick S did not want to reveal anything more detailed because s4 had not been planned out yet (they start working on mapping the season & writing scripts in early June). Or because he’s prepared for the network/studio to request changing their plans. 

So even if he has had a specific timeline in mind, and all, and even if he would want to reveal such a specific spoiler, he might stay vague, because there are external forces that might change these plans.  

There are many reasons why he couldn’t or wouldn’t give a more specific answer (s4 hasn’t been written yet, network/studios sometimes might “ask” for plans to be changed, other external/real life reasons might call for change of plans... hence no info on when & how it’ll happen). But even if they have it all planned out & know exactly when & how it happens (and know the plans won’t be changed), it’s not like they’d reveal such info to fans... so “soon”. 

Though he says he’s in no rush to bring a baby genius onto the show, Santora believes a pregnancy is “the natural progression” for Happy and her new husband.

This could mean many things - that the baby/child will not be a genius, and instead be a normal... cause then he wouldn’t be bringing a baby genius to the team. And we can take the quote like that. 

Or it could mean that while there will  be a (genius) baby, the child will not be seen much (that there are no plans to be working with baby actors much...and it’ll be more like something between baby Emma on FRIENDS & baby Halley on TBBT...where there is a pregnancy plot & a baby, but we don’t see him/her... much.) So he/she is not “brought onto the show”. 

But it does reveal that the plan was “first the wedding, then the pregnancy/kids”... That the traditional way is considered the “natural progression”. So 1. get together 2. get engaged 3. get married 4. have kids...is the natural progression of things... 

Only thing that this hints at is that there will be a storyline about  pregnancy & trying for a biological kid, and it seems to hint that it’ll happen “naturally” (they could also do an adoption plot, but it sounds to me that they’ll have a bio kid first, and then maybe later they’ll also adopt... cause I will forever have the headcanon that because of Happy’s own childhood/past and that 3x04/3x07 “waiting outside of school” speech, they will give one orphanage child the childhood & home/family she never had...) 

“One of my favorite speeches of the season was when Happy said she always wanted to wait outside the school for her kid. She still wants that, and Toby wants that.”  

This confirms that as seen in 3x07, Toby & Happy both still want to “wait outside of school for their child” That as we saw in the Cadmium-baby/Proposal #2 scene - they really wanted to become parents (more than they’d realized...that was made clear in that beautiful end scene with stellar acting from JW & EKT), and though they haven’t discussed it since/we haven’t seen/heard their thoughts and feelings about the Cd-pregnancy & having a family/baby..since then, then the wish is still there. They want it. They want to become parents. They want to have a baby. And that it will be discussed, and will lead to a decision and all that... 

This is confirmation that there will be a Quintis pregnancy plot. When, and how it’ll happen, it does not say. All it says is the writers confirming that Toby's lines in 3x07 are also their lines, and “it is gonna happen....when the time is right”.  

But this suggest that even if there won’t be a pregnancy/baby early season 4 (s4A), then we will at least see them discuss the Cd baby/kids/future/family, and/or try to have a baby. And for me...personally...that is enough. To have them “talk” about the “past” & the “future” and kids... would be enough...even if the show would decide to write a pregnancy plot only sometime later... (as the plan seems to be 6 years...as in the writers have kind of mapped out the storyline with having in mind that there’ll be 6 seasons, so we’re in the middle of the story/book...but since TV is very uncertain business, they know very well that their plans have do be changed possibly...) ETA: Now we know that that first talk happen in 4x03 

Also...for those, who are waiting for a Toby backstory, and plot, then if anyone watches BONES or SWITCHED AT BIRTH, which both had former gambler characters, who relapsed...(at least) once...then the “best” time for having a character relapse/almost relapse is when they are about to start a family/have a baby...so since I believe there will be a Toby/Bruno/gambling plot in s4... I’d say the chances of Quintis baby plot also happening in s4 are high. (but what better & easier way to highlight their “we’re broke” storyline than to add a baby to the mix... cause everyone knows babies mean extra costs, so financial issues at a time like this make a great little dramatic plot...) But this part's just my speculation. 

The options for “when” : 

Happy is revealed to be pregnant in S4 premiere/early s4, and we will see the pregnancy plot throughout s4. 

Early s4 we will see Quintis talk “future” and kids/family, and deciding to have kids (either bio or adoption). The whole s4 will be their attempts to start a family...either the adoption process with it’s hurdles, or the “trying-for-a-baby” plot with it’s bumps. It could be that the Cd-poisoning has affected her ability to get pregnant... (note: there are some studies IRL that suggest that women have some trouble conceiving “right away” after exposure, or that there could be some other issues..even if no real studies have been done, and no real evidence about any harm has been found. Most studies confirm that Cd-poisoning doesn’t affect a woman’s pregnancy or chances of conception, the only thing that studies suggest is a little lower birth weight for the babies)...as fast as they wanted. 

They will not talk about babies/family plans for a bit...and it’s saved for middle/end of season 4. Either with a pregnancy reveal around Xmas ep or around the Finale. And up until then we get them just talk about the future, or their attempts to start a family. In whatever form the show decides to do this. 

They could even save it for s5. Though I do think that even if the pregnancy itself will be saved for s5, then at least the reveal (when she/they find out) happens in s4.., even if it’ll be the s4 end scene. Every thing points to it happening in s4, rather than them saving it for future. Though whatever plans they have/had, all could change soon, because the writers will be back to work soon (next week), and this is when plotting s4 starts. This also means that the Quintis Baby plot will be mapped/planned out in the upcoming weeks -- when it’s done (s4/later) & how it’s done (what will be the bumps on the road...cause you know there will be issues... whatever they are...) 

The options for “how”: 

They could play it for comedy (see: the film “Maybe Baby”, where it becomes a “job”... rather than anything else...with them trying too hard, taking her temp, “mapping” the cycle, trying to get the peak moment to make their chances of success greater... etc... etc) or they could play it for the drama... have them be angsty about things...first about their loss...of the baby that never was, and then about it not happening the first time/month, about her fearing that what happened to her mum (at childbirth) could happen to her.... etc They could play it many ways. The characters, and their backstories provide so many possibilities....

Then they can toy with the pregnancy itself. Do it kinda like we already saw in 3x05 & 3x06...with Toby over-reacting, and him being too protective, and her being all like “I’m pregnant, not sick”. The pretty usual tv pregnancy plot options. We could see some comedic scenes added. We could see some bicker-fighting scenes added. We could see some sweet scenes added (you just know that Toby’s the kind of character, who will talk to the belly & so on..). 

They could do the fertility issues plot. They could have them have minor or major issues. Either have them be upset that it didn’t happen after one try, or have them get frustrated when it doesn’t happen for a while...and they both think “I'm the problem, not you”. They could do the genius/normal plot again...in a way. They could do “we want this, but we’re still not ready...or so we think” plot...again. They could do so many things with it. And it allows so many Toby, so many Happy, so many Quintis, so many Team, so many Ralph/Team/Quintis scenes to be written. The writers just have to decide which way they’re gonna tell the story. 

You can squee... after reading this spoiler. It’s recommended even. But this is just a reminder to not expect too much, and that the answer doesn’t tell anything specific. 

Because the writers confirmed that Quintis baby is (still) the plan. They just can’t or won’t say WHEN and HOW it’s planned to happen. But even if we have to wait...for a bit/long time for that little genius to arrive, there will be plots related to that future development. 

As, like I’ve said many times before, Quintis is the “traditional” secondary couple, whose relationship development follows the more traditional steps. They’re the “happy couple”, who stay together...even if the journey is bumpy at times. They’re more like Monica/Chandler on Friends, or Lily/Marshall on HIMYM, or Angela/Jack on Bones. 

They get the usual couples plots. And their storyline follows the traditional steps... so we have had them chase each other, get together, move in together, get engaged, get married... next steps are family/kids...

Final Fantasy lX Review 10/31/17

Have you ever thought or considered playing Final Fantasy lX? Well what lies in this entry of the Fantasy series are: storybook based kingdoms that look as if they emerged out of a watercolor illustration, high flying battleship chases that will keep your heart pounding, young lovers from different backgrounds coming together to stop a greater threat, magical melodies that you will keep on humming long after completion and explosive battles that will have you nervous and on edge and even frustrated from the difficulty, but proud in the end from your efforts when you emerge victorious; these are some of the things you will experience as you make your way to your journey’s end in Final Fantasy lX I have wanted to play ever since I witnessed my brother playing the game when I was just around nine years old. I remember him playing the start of the game and being amazed by its complexity and difficulty and so drawn in by the quirky characters and the game’s fantastic setting of Alexandria .It was not until years later I got to set off on that exact adventure and uncover the story that piqued my curiosity when I was younger.

It’s astonishing to me of how this game’s plot was never revealed to me and of how nobody once-so-ever brought up this game in a conversation beforehand. If it were not for my older brother, this game would probably still have been a complete mystery to me. Finally, I decided purchase the game and witness with my own eyes what lies beyond Alexandria. This entry kicks off with the character Vivi in the kingdom of Alexandria - a kingdom with a grand castle watching over a town of homes and shops to the lower class. Vivi, a young boy shrouded underneath an overwhelming wizard’s hat adorned with calm glowing red eyes- not the fierce glowing eyes of some monster in some horror flick, but the eyes of a kind, gentle and docile boy- he enters the town amidst gleeful citizens preparing to watch the festivities of the year’s play from the Tantulus group. The beginning of the game is probably my favorite part of the entire game. Picture a moonlit night with gleaming stars- a gargantuan ship swimming past empty skies over a kingdom glowing with citizens looming down below watching in anticipation for the coming feature that will be played for their entertainment by the Tantulus group.Along all this in the backdrop stands the beautiful castle of Alexandria bustling and crowded with royals ready just the same. It really is a scene to behold and our friend Vivi is front row along with his newfound friend, Puck! It sets up the story wonderfully and really captures the fantasy and magic of what is to come. From there out you meet some of the other set pieces to the tale. You soon take control of Zidane; a blonde haired spunky thief with a cat-like tail who has a thing for women and cheesy lines who eventually meets the beautiful kind hearted and intelligent (I know, talk about the whole package) Garnet who is adorned with her orange jumpsuit and then comes along her stout and honorable knight and bodyguard Steiner, who appears to be stylized in European armor or maximilian armor that he found in a bargain bin in the market place. Seriously, he looks like he is wearing a cargo shorts style of European armor! The characters are pretty solid in the game and some of them are pretty fleshed out with a good deal of moments to capture your interest and the designs are rather fitting in this game’s setting. I know this game and the rest of the entries in the series take a while to actually complete and the creators stretched it long enough that it actually had four discs on the original Playstation platform, but in all of that time, I felt that some characters could have had more of their backstory described to the audience. I learned so much about Garnet and Zidane of course and even Vivi, but I felt that some of the other characters backgrounds were somewhat absent in the game. Sure there was one brief entry where is talks about Vivi’s origins, but I wanted more of that. Some characters even just get a brief nudge at their reason for joining the party, but I digress. Zidane at the start of the game seemed a bit much for me. He constantly delivered lines that I felt were a bit forceful and dull. He constantly gave positive reaffirming lines like: don’t give up, we’ll do this together, etc. I do like his kindness as a person, I just feel that the script that was given to his character was a bit dull and overused in other JRPGs and when he says things like that I just sit here rolling my eyes- I also felt no reason to think of him as this somewhat bad boy some characters attached to him from their history together. It felt they liked him so much just because he was the obvious main protagonist and the creators just made it that way. I think Zidane really shines when he is not taking himself so serious. He is always trying to make light out of a situation with some snarky remark when the party is in danger. There is a ton of chemistry in between the characters. I love the big brother attitude Zidane has towards Vivi and how he is always giving him advice and positive reinforcement and how Steiner acts like this overly protective uncle with Garnet and how he tries to shoo Zidane away and calling him a lowly thief, and then romance between Zidane and Garnet is heartwarming and earnest as the game progresses. I really was smiling at how all the characters bounced off each other.

               Final Fantasy takes what the previous games had and added a couple of spices to the mix to create a familiar and new experience. Nine returns with the traditional turn based gameplay style fans have come to love and added a new twist. In this game, you acquire different types of equipment that you give to your part members; with this equipment, you are able to learn the skills that are attached to them by gaining AP (ability points) through battle. It is pretty similar to Final Fantasy seven’s materia system, but less complex and easier to understand. In seven, you must equip your weapon of choice followed by your set of materia to attach to it. By doing this, your character will gain ap to level those abilities up. In Final Fantasy nine- just go ahead and equip the weapon and you will have the new skill available, but to keep it permanently, just level up that skill. It is like growing a plant to be added to your beautiful garden- your garden of death! Yeah! The game is pretty straight forward to character classes. You have thief, knight, white mage, black mage and so on, but as I played I separated between magic users and physical attackers. All characters have abilities they can activate with the use of MP (Magic Power), but it is most prominent with the mages. I always try and keep a balance of the two parties. Summons make a return, for it has become one of the core elements for the series. You can summon varieties of different god-like beings and creatures to assist you. They are a sight to see in the beginning, but I rarely used them because they took up so much MP and so much screen time. It is pretty awesome wasting your enemy in a giant energy blast and causing massive malefic damage, but not worth having to spend extra minutes during grinding moments. Props to the team for always including this element to the games because they are always engaging and must take tons of hours to create those moments for us to enjoy. You also have the trance mode making a return. The trance mechanic allows your character to activate a special ability to be used, or for some, attack twice. The abilities can only be used when your trance gauge has filled up and they can be pretty handy in a tight spot and they have saved my booty in some difficult battles. My favorite game mechanic is the active time events. The active time events are like little cut scenes that show what your pals are up to while you are making way to another destination. It is a nice addition because it fleshes out some of the characters and adds to them a little more and it also shows how much of a fat cow Quina is! I see you looking for some delicious food while the rest of us are working! If you do find anything though, you better share! The game itself can be quite difficult at some points- mostly in the beginning for me though. I found myself grinding a bit when I first hit the world map because I struggled against some enemies. I worried about not having money for potions or just running out of items to heal my party. As the game progressed, I had plenty of dough to spend on potions and my white mages cared for my ill friends using abilities like cure, so I became at ease as time went on; although, I did find myself trapped in a corner at times struggling for victory. It is nice because it does have its difficulty, but not difficult enough to be impossible to those who may even be new to the series. I think one of my problems in playing RPGs is that I always conserve my inventory until the absolute last moments of the game. I should stop doing that and maybe I would stop dying less.

               The last thing I really want to touch upon, is the games soundtrack. Wow does this game have the tunes! In all, I think my favorite part of this experience was the music throughout my time in Gaia. Out of all the games made by Squaresoft or now Square Enix this Final Fantasy was the most fantasy-like sounding game. It gave me the feel of some fairytale out of some timeworn and tarnished storybook mixed in with some dungeons and dragons. The game’s composer Nobuo Uematsu-san. Uematsu-san is a returning composer to the franchise and was there from the start. He composed tracks for the first Final Fantasy and even the legendary soundtrack to seven and now he has returned to continue to do what he does best: make magnificent and memorable music. Throughout the creating process Uematsu-san spent roughly a year to compose more than a hundred tracks for this game’s purpose and not even all of it was included. The story opens up with this medieval yet child-like melody called “the Place I’ll Return to Someday.” It sounds like something you would maybe hear wandering in Florence Italy during the renaissance. It sounds pleasant yet mysterious with its soft brass instruments humming quietly in unison. It really gives a room to the possibilities to the upcoming adventure you are soon to embark. The battle theme “Battle 1,” is the tune you will mostly hear when encountering different enemies throughout the game. It is addicting listening to this tune as soon as it kicks in, you will have your head bobbing and your feet tapping to the rhythm as you waste the upcoming threat, so it is a great thing that it is addicting because hearing a bad song over and over again would probably drive you crazy to say the least. This tune is like many other tracks in the game, for it is an updated version of the theme from the previous entries of the series. “Dark Messenger” is pretty epic. It begins with the organ piano as if you were in some church, then transforms into this foot stomping hand clapping stadium anthem, which then turns into some rock concert, then lastly converts to this sympathetic piano piece. It transitions wonderfully and fits the grim scenario; although while I would be getting pummeled, at least I get to listen to some wonderful tunes-right? Along with the sinister “Dark Messenger,” comes its counterpart the “final battle,” theme. It sounds as if you were walking into a chamber of tortured souls whose moans and whales gave me shivers. It is as if something you would hear in Dante’s quest in “Dante’s Inferno.” That would be it if it did not then transform into some fast paced, almost chase scene-like tune! It picks up really fast and gets me so pumped up! Lastly, I want to mention what probably the most prominent song you will hear throughout your quest and that song is “Melodies of Life,” let me tell you that this easily became my favorite melody. It is sung by the talented Emiko Shiratori in both English and Japanese versions of the game. Shiratori’s voice is peaceful, loving and endearing and she is spot on with this arrangement. It is absolutely touching and will warm your heart dearly. Throughout the game, you will hear Garnet humming the tune so beautifully, but it is not until the end of your journey that you will finally be able to hear it in its full composition. The song encapsulates everything and the romance between Garnet and Zidane. It is probably one of my favorite closing sequences of any game that I have experienced.

Final Fantasy lX is probably my favorite title in the series and I wish more people would talk about this entry on the same level as llV and X because it definitely holds up even today and I believe it will always be a memorable experience for future gamers to come. To say the least, it was a grand journey filled with adventure, love, laughs and sorrow as well as anger. It had some rocky moments that I think could have gone better or probably could have been worked on a bit more, but in the end I give this game a 9/10.

Fluff, angst or smut: Angst is my biggest fave thing in the universe, ngl -- but sometimes osmething fluffy to scream at is simply magical. Plots or memes: Both, why not -- if I could get them, of ocurse. Long or short replies: I write long replies, I simply cannot help it, I bring too many details and too much backstory to what I write.
