So i’m finally rewatching vrains episode 4 for my screenshot redraws and I realised something, in almost all of Go Onizuka’s duels theres a plot point of him nearing disqualification because he struggled to stand up after loosing some life points, like it happens to him more than anyone else.

Anywayss I have decided that he used to be an actual wrestler, and an injury from a fight gave him issues with walking/balance so he took up duelling instead, that doesn’t mean that it isnt still difficult for him to do the physical part of speed duelling. Explains why hes the only one that had to physically train in order to try out speed duelling too

so originally i actually intended to redraw a panel from like a more plot-relevant moment but then ell posted this moment and it just really hit home for me — one of the things in 2al that i love so much is just like how much hope there is throughout. how much love and joy. like the leos are literally stuck in this horrible looping pattern of loss, almost a doomed destiny narrative of sorts, but throughout the whole narrative theres levity and light even in dire circumstances — and it comes from loving yourself and those around you and participating in the joys of the present moment and just idk man like.

yes there are terrible foes that feel impossible to face alone. yes life has taken a lot from me. yeah. but. i will put on my shirt today. i am going to have a good day today.

so ofc i had to draw this one, but tbh im not super thrilled with how sprouts face came out in the end?? SO i went through some of my fave mini comics and did the one with Big Leo and Sprout bc, again, im emotional.

1.) aug 28th, 2024 -- i started this around the time where i'd just gotten into something else and basically just detached myself from the dca... and therefore all my art with them got way more experimental and personal to me and my tastes bc i'd just stopped caring about them LOL

i do wish i'd finished this one though because i love how the body looks! i don't remember ever starting this with much of a plan though and i very visibly got bored once i drew all the fun parts (i hate drawing their legs)

2.) oct 1st, 2024 -- this could technically be considered vent artwork? i wanted to make something purposefully grotesque and unnerving because i was just really angry at the fandom all the time... and it doesnt help that whenever i get into something new i go through a weird breakup phase with my old interest (which might not make sense to some people lol) which causes some weird feelings.

a less angsty thing i can mention is that i was also very purposefully trying to be more relaxed about the way i paint things here! i usually strictly adhere to a set palette i make for myself, so this drawing was me pushing myself out of that comfort zone and forcing myself to freestyle the colors a bit... the result didnt really end up how i wanted it to be though (^^;; )

3.) oct 9th, 2024 -- iirc this was me elaborating on a physical sketch i made where i was playing around with their face... i actually still really, really like this style and this drawing might've been the best way i've ever done it. fluid and expressive but still grotesque enough for it to stay true to their original design! this is the thing i reference whenever i draw them this way (and if you look at my most recent post you might notice some similarities?)

4.) may 11th, 2024 -- MANN i wish i'd finished this one!!! it was a redraw of this drawing based off of "chimera" by deco*27!! i've always associated that song with the dca but i didn't give it justice the first time i drew it due to the time constraints so i wanted to do it better!!! but then i got stuck on the hands 😭

5.) jul 18th, 2024 -- nothing truly profound to say here as this was actually just a test... never got around to adding a body to it, mainly because i just like drawing their face more than i like drawing the rest of them. you can probably look at all of these and realize that for yourself though LMAO

I already posted this on bsky but this is my FoM farmer OC, Lake! Please excuse the fact that the little drawing of him is in almost the same pose as the sprite - I wanted to do a little redraw ^^;

A "Caldosian adventurer" with seemingly nothing in his past worth talking about, Lake comes to Mistria after finding the job posting in a city he was passing through. Having no home of his own, he thinks the offer sounds pretty swell - a house, however small and shabby, in exchange for some basic work? It sounds like a steal, especially after sleeping in the woods with nothing but a ragged tent and pallet most nights.

His original intentions are to come to town, save up whatever he can from his excess profits, and then disappear over the Caldosian border before anyone can find out anything about him. However, the warmhearted nature of the townsfolk winds up drawing him in, and he finds himself genuinely wanting to help restore what's been damaged in the aftermath of the earthquake. When he and Eiland unintentionally restore Caldarus, though it may be to just a bit of his former power, Caldarus offers Lake the ability to perform magic -- something that Lake had often found himself wishing for as a young child.

Against his better judgment, he accepts the boon from his new dragon companion and puts a real effort into shaping up the land he's been given, slowly growing closer to his new Mistrian neighbors. He quickly befriends Hayden when the man finds out he also has a soft spot for small farm animals, as well as Celine, who is more than happy to help him learn some of the finer points of gardening. However, it quickly becomes obvious that, despite technically working for Adeline, Lake is trying to avoid interacting with the town's nobility.

Gee, Adeline and Eiland think, he must be shy, being the newest face in town! Surely he's just nervous because he's not used to interacting with nobles! And so they make it their goal to make Lake realize that, despite their finery and manner, their parents are quite unlike many of the stuck-up vassals to the throne! They're just normal people!

What they don't realize, though, is that Lake is a former member of a group of... well, the sort of people that don't interact with polite society. Orphaned as a young child, he was taken in by the thieves who murdered his parents -- though he didn't know that part -- and branded as a part of their guild. At age twelve, he was given the chance to choose between two paths: either continue being the equivalent of servant, doomed to a life tending his overseers' livestock and gardens, or... become one of them.

He worked as a member of the thieves' guild for some time, until one fateful day. At age twenty-two, he was scoping out a market stall when a young lord happened to pass by and see the brand on his inner wrist. The man flew into a frenzy, accusing Lake of any number of crimes, exposing him there for what he was -- a lowly thief, one of the very group that had plagued the city for ages. Lake tried to explain that he had no idea what the man was talking about, and truthfully, for he had only come to Aldaria that week -- but he was soon set upon by not only the man's armed guards, but a furious swarm of marketgoers and stallkeepers as well.

At the end of a harrowing chase, Lake thought he had escaped, only to come face-to-face with the lord who had hurled those accusations his way. Beaten and exhausted, Lake tried to reason with him, but the man revealed the reason for his hatred - "My father died because of your sort!"

Lake looked down at that brand on his wrist, and something like understanding washed over him. He would always be one of the crooks who had taken lives and livelihoods -- there was no way talking like this was going to work. As he tried, the lord advanced on him, brandishing his sword -- and so Lake took out his own, and ended the man's life to earn his freedom.

The Caldosian border was on lockdown, any number of kingsmen could be searching for him, and so Lake turned to the nearest outpost -- only to be shunned for such a blatant crime, for having drawn attention to the guild with such a brazen murder. He fled for his life there, too, for the ones he might have considered brothers and sisters were only interested in collecting the bounty now on his head.

With nowhere to go, Lake ran and ran until he collapsed. He awoke in a small cabin in the woods, where he met the man who had saved him - a man who knew exactly who he was, and who still wanted to hear his side of the story. After explaining himself, Lake assumed he would get dragged off to the nearest town to be jailed and hanged, but instead the stranger just asked him -- "How does life as an adventurer sound?"

With the mark on his wrist obscured by a new tattoo, and a new identity pieced together for him by an experienced explorer, Lake began taking work through the Aldarian Adventurer's Guild, where he eventually earned enough merit to make a meager living for himself. However, he always stayed on the move -- afraid that if he stayed anywhere long enough for someone to recognize him, to find an old wanted poster and notice the resemblance or the holes in his backstory, that his new life of freedom would be taken from him.

And so it went, until Lake came to Mistria, where the baron's son took a particular interest in him for some unknown reason. And where he, as fate would have it, fell head over heels for Eiland in turn, while also trying to master dragon magic and keep his chickens and rabbits from eating his entire garden. Oh, and also, some other political drama as Mistria begins rising through the rankings, and the king's vassals start getting very suspicious and jealous of what's going on with all of that.

Fun facts: -Lake is vegetarian. He had to slaughter many of the animals he raised during his time with the thieves' guild, and it broke his heart every time. He has tons of pets now -- not livestock. He will correct anyone who makes that mistake.

-He loves fruits, and consequently, any sort of juice, sweet, drink, or dessert made out of them. He doesn't have a favorite, as it would be a tie between far too many! The fact that he can grow them all now is an absolute joy -- and the ones that only grow in the wild? He frequently goes foraging for them, whether to eat straight from the bush or to preserve for later.

-He likes keeping fish. They're pretty and relaxing to watch, so he often finds himself seated in front of an aquarium, lost in thought.

-He is a little bit shy, but also a good actor. He finds himself overwhelmed frequently when it comes to talking shop with Hayden, despite the man's friendly nature. As such, it's also super easy to convince him to do anything, because he'll just freeze up and agree to whatever it is a person is suggesting. He finds himself in a lot of situations like this, wishing he hadn't offered to help, and yet unwilling to go back on his word. (He's a good person now, he keeps telling himself.)

-He's a natural with the sword. He tries to avoid violence where possible, but there's also a part of him deep down that is really proud of the talent. He keeps this to himself for sure. He also wears his sword everywhere in Mistria -- something that's odd to the townspeople, but quickly gets filed as just a quirk.

-Lake and Eiland begin forming their friendship when it comes out that Lake is almost entirely uneducated. He can read and write, sure, and he's up to date on modern events -- but history? It's fascinating, but he feels like an idiot for not knowing even the most basic facts. Eiland loves teaching people, especially when it focuses on his own interests, and so they wind up spending a lot of time together.

-Lake doesn't get along well with Juniper or March. He doesn't trust whatever it is that Juniper is up to -- or the fact that she can sense Caldarus's magic on him. With March, they learn to tolerate each other, but Lake has really strong feelings on people who are assholes, undoubtedly from dealing with that sort quite a bit during his upbringing. For the sake of keeping the peace, though, Lake bites his tongue. Most of the time.

-Aside from Hayden and Celine, his closest neighbors, Lake also finds himself getting along well with Ryis and Olric. He also respects Valen a lot, but is fairly intimidated by her.

-He loves swooshy cloaks/capes and big hats. These become a part of his usual attire after be begins working for the Adventurer's Guild, and only ever go away when the situation calls for it.

-He's a little bit vain about his hair. He was never able to grow it long until he became an adventurer, so he's been working diligently to keep it healthy ever since.

-He pierced his own ears when he was fifteen and just a little bit edgy. He likes to mix it up between studs and hoops, but nothing too dangly, or it gets caught in his hair.

-He cannot control his magic very well. He often finds himself using the spells Caldarus has taught him when he doesn't want to be using them. All it takes is for him to close his eyes and breathe in the scent of dew upon the morning grass, to feel that sense of peace and relaxation he's never gotten before coming here --- and suddenly his plants have doubled in height, and so have all the weeds in a 200m radius, making more work for himself.

-He also causes a major thunderstorm on the night of the Star Festival, when Eiland takes his hand and offers to walk him home after their date. The two of them basically slide down the mountain in the mud, laughing the entire way.

in the digitally published version Obikawa's eyes look more energetic and there's an innocence in the way he blurted out suggestion. like he said it before he even registered the implications and his own personal feelings regarding the topic. it's impulsive, like the first thought that immediately came to his mind, and he doesn't hesitate to shout it out. like an "oh, I got an idea of what I can do!"

but the print one though? however? he's blushing just a little bit? the little change in the way his eyes are less wide makes it feel much warmer, like he said this coming more from a place of genuine care. it was still impulsive, but oh.. it makes me think more about how he really loves Tokinaga. like an "oh, I'd be more than happy to help!"

either way i think both still conveys that Obikawa's idea of being able to help Tokinaga makes him happy... the change is subtle but I get very different energies of where his genuineness is coming from.

personally i like the digitally published one since i feel like the enthusiastic blurting of the suggestion makes it feel more innocent, because the pages afterwards haven't changed and it sort of solidifies more how more of an impulse it was

but I will never know if the redraw was just because Eno was unsatisfied with how she drew the face or wanted to convey a different meaning lol. i might be looking too into it

Hiii I’m back to bother you all again with technical difficulties. Long story short, if I have diagnosed the problem properly, I need a new Apple Pencil! And if I’m wrong I’ll need to replace both my pencil and the iPad itself!! But (and I am sure this will surprise no one that’s read this far) - I have no money 🥲

This isn’t quite a 100% necessary expense. I still have a handful of job applications sent out that are still waiting on replies, and hopefully I’ll have some more income sooner rather than later - but since comms and art have been one of my main sources of income this year, this is gonna be a decent problem for a little bit 😅 in the meantime I’m going to reach into the void and boost some stuff and offer additional ways that maybe I can earn some money for the month!

Can't wait to see the new comic! Although I'm quite curious, by reboot, will it just be a new version of the first comic, while the rest remains, or is it a complete restart and every previous comics should be viewed as non-canon now?

Good questions, and I will make some sort of Q&A post at some point. But the main reason I'm rebooting is that RGB (the shopkeeper) became way more important to the plot than I originally planned, and thus I'd like to redraw the first chapter (technically I could introduce the stuff now too but it's much more smoother to just redraw the first chapter)

Chapter 1 is the only one that really NEEDS to be redrawn/plot. But I also wanna redraw chapter 2 as it was super short originally and I got way better ideas for it now.

After those, I'll see what I do. Since the comic will be in Black/white style like HOI comic was, thus I'll likely wanna redraw the others too but in terms of the plot, they don't necessarily need a redraw as badly as the first two. (The reason I'm moving to grayscale is to save time. I don't have as much time with a full time job on the horizon nor energy)

I would consider the old chapters canon and not. Pretty much same things happen but there are new scenes and some stuff is introduced sooner. Chapter 2 is the only one that will very significantly change (even if it ends in same situation as old one)

Puh, I got rambling. Hope this made some sense, haha. Glad people are excited the comic is reviving. Me too

holy moly! a zzeldaverse post in the year of our lord 2024? this must be impossible!

it's been almost four whole years since i last posted--one of my last posts was about age of calamity! that came out november of 2020. yeesh. i would like to sincerely apologize for disappearing without a trace into the sunset (supposedly all-consumed by AoC, which I haven't even technically finished playing yet!)

and i think it's a bit silly that my next post is when another playable princess zelda game has released! i haven't gotten my copy of echoes of wisdom quite yet, but I'm super excited to play. games like EoW is why I made zzeldaverse in the first place--to have people realize there was a gap in the zelda series: a game solely revolving around princess zelda, and not the journey link takes to save her. that's the exact idea i had in mind when creating this webcomic.

so, with this post, you might be wondering: is zzeldaverse coming back in any capacity?

yes and no. i'm a full time college sophomore working my dream job, and i barely have time to play video games or draw anymore. i'm an adult now (YIKES!) and i have to allocate my time wisely, and right now, video games and art don't fit into my schedule most days.

keyword: most days! i still draw zzeldaverse and play zelda, just not as often as i used to. as i redesign and redraw some zzeldaverse pieces, i'll post them here for y'all to see. I'm unsure if i'll be making any more original comics other than silly meme doodle posts, but i still adore drawing these girls. if EoW zelda turns out to be Echo, and not Fable, i will 100% be adding her to this lineup.

tl;dr: i'll be posting doodles every now and then! don't expect any sort of schedule. college has me tied up as-is. thank you for sticking around if you have all these years and unconsciously helping me grow up. sorry you had to be subjugated to my old art style!

or, basically the climax of the Dailysquiddo lore thing, in which Squiddo realizes ashswag mattered to her once. The whole of lifesteal is in a war, and then she and Ashswag get hit by a giant tnt blast, or well, squiddo jumps in front of him… and breaks her glasses. Whoopsie. she absolutely loses it and unleashes full force relative power, opening a portal to the void. And she gets to drop an f bomb because I think she deserves it. Especially since character wise she nearly lost someone important AGAIN, and she is loyal to A FAULT … but it’s fine. It’s F I N E , HA HA HA.

Royal School of Needlework: First Impressions

The key headline thoughts I want to share are these:

I got more personal tutoring before the first lunch break that I got in the entirety of four modules with School of Stitched Textiles

There's a lot of setup and prep, which means I'm still a long way from actually starting the embroidery part of my embroidery course

Don't sign up the day before the class. Even if their calendar says that there's a space available to book, give at least a couple of days notice.

Unpacking these thoughts a bit more:

I signed up last minute. I went on their website yesterday to see when they would have spaces to work out when I could schedule in my first class, and saw that they had a class today that was showing as having spaces to book. I signed up, figuring that if they allowed booking the day before, then they would have systems in place to make that work.

Nope.

Apparently the security and class lists are all prepared a couple of days ahead of time, so the tutors had no idea I was coming and I wasn't on the security list. The automated email set I would be collected from the security office at 9:45am by a tutor. I arrived a bit early and waited. And waited. The very helpful person on the security desk spent half an hour trying to phone someone to get me sorted out, before eventually radioing in for someone else to walk me up. So I was escorted through the backways of Hampton Court Palace by a couple of security guys who didn't know exactly which room I was meant to be in.

I got there in the end, and everyone was very friendly about it, but then the tutor had to go and find me the starter kit to get me set up because she'd had no idea I was coming. So that would be my main advice if you're thinking of signing up for one of their courses: book several days ahead of time at least.

My day was spent on setup. I came up with my design, which involved copying various traditional design elements, only to be advised to change various parts for one reason or another (don't have three leaves of the same shape because you want to demonstrate variety, don't have those berries so close together because wool's pretty chunky and you don't want them to feel crowded, make that stem thinner or it will take you ages to stitch, etc.). I spent a lot of time drawing, rubbing out, and redrawing before I got to the design I'm going with.

Then I had to start setting up my fabric on the frame. The class is in a traditional, historical style, which means traditional, historical equipment. No quick, plastic clips to hold the fabric on the frame here. I've got one side of my fabric attached and one side pinned, ready to sew into place, to be finished as homework, but I haven't even started on the other two sides, which will be a different method so I need to wait until my next class to be shown that.

The transfer method will be prick and pounce, which I've never done before. I've got my design about half pricked, and I need to finish the rest as more homework.

I still need to work about my stitch plan and colour plan - which is even more homework and will be reviewed by the tutor the next time I go in for a class.

A lot of prep working before I get sewing. Technically I did do some sewing in my sewing class, because attaching the fabric to the frame involves some stitching, but it's not exactly delicate embroidery.

There were about ten people in the classroom working on different modules and in different stages of their progress. I got to watch someone else doing the same module as me who was trying to get it mounted to be sent for assessment. Someone else was stitching on her piece. One of the others was doing goldwork.

Each of us got personal attention from the tutors. There were two tutors (I got the feeling one was more senior than the other) who went around helping everyone in turn. So I got personal advice about my design, and helped with picking colours, as well as being shown the methods for pricking and preparing the frame. Across the six hour teaching day, I wasn't being taught constantly for the six hours, but they would start me off on something and then come back to check in, and if I had a specific question, I didn't have to wait long for them to finish talking to whoever they were currently helping and then spot me waiting.

They were friendly and attentive, and offered me helpful advice.

As I said, the experience was so much better than School of Stitched Textiles. The gap between the two levels of tuition is a chasm the size of the Grand Canyon. Royal School of Needlework is a bit more expensive but, despite the mess of no one knowing to expect me, the improvement in amount and quality of teaching, even after one class, is SOOOOOO much that it's definitely worth it.

Christmas Dino V1

Okay so there was this post and my brain latched onto the idea.

Christmas Dino! Way cooler than a tree, easier to store and no stupid pine needles everywhere.

We're super close the holidays so this year will be V1 - with plans for embedding lights and possibly engraving designs next year with more time.

So with like -2 planning skills and +5 to ADHD hyperfocus, off we go. The goal is if I chronicle this, maybe it'll keep me from getting distracted. HA.

Day 1:

Okay so the plan is to pick a dino, find a basic pattern, and then figure out how big to size it up so it fits on our tree table (aka the dining room table because we don't use it).

As much as I really wanted to do a Stegosaurus, the issue is that with the restriction of the table size, I'd be looking at a fairly small dino. Also, we want to keep our tree topper - a modified Heroes of the Storm Tyreal figure - and an bipedal dino allows for more hilarious possibilities for how to mount him on top.

So t-rex it is. I found a pattern online after a bit of Googling - it's low rez as hell, but I'm going to have to redraw it anyway to properly size the joints so no big deal.

Next step - Measure the table, and then maths to figure out how big to scale it Naw, we're going by vibes. Slap the pattern into MS Paint, scale it 300%, print it, reassemble, cut it out of cardboard and test the size.

(Just FYI in case someone isn't aware, because I wasn't - if you ever need to print something over multiple pages, MS Paint does it for freeeeeeee. Otherwise the only other option I know of that actual works decently well is Adobe Acrobat but you need the stupid CC sub for that feature. So to hell with Adobe, MS Paint ftw!)

This is gonna be so much easier than maths. Yup.

There were two pages of pattern pieces, each page ended up being 16 pages once pushed to 300%. Yay for laser printer speeds (seriously so happy we finally bit the bullet on one - this would have been objectively painful on an inkjet)

Once assembled, cutting begins and a few songs later, we've got a pile of pattern pieces!

Luckily my ADHD brain has forgetten to put out the cardboard for the last like month and half on recycle day, so I've got a solid IKEA box to cut (most) of the pattern out.

(There's a few ribs that had to be done on another box, but they're not technically structurally significant so that's okay.)

Traced and numbered everything (mostly), and then we cut out!

I would like to note two things at this point:

This is all taking place in my living room, on my coffee table and my floor. I have a decently sized full on craft room and table JUST FOR THIS KIND OF THING but no. On the floor we go. At almost 40. My lower back has not forgiven me yet.

Since the IKEA cardboard is thick, I figure using my flip out utility knife is going to be the easiest tool for cutting. This is both correct and wrong. The knife is sharp and gets through the layers no problem HOWEVER it is a utility knife designed for more single quick use on a work site. It's got a rough texture and bolts and a belt hook. (Google Milwaukee utility knife and you'll see...) So by the end of this I've got a blister at the bottom of my middle finger that's popped, and several more on my finger tips that I notice as soon as I start typing.

TL;DR I'm dumb and injured myself in ENTIRELY PREVENTABLE WAYS.

But! I've got t-rex bones now!

Okay so cardboard isn't the most sturdy, and my boy cannot hold himself up on his spindly little cardboard legs. But still! He's the perfect size! A little wall for support and he's all set! Aiden really didn't want cooperate with requests to be used as a scale model, so Tali jumped in because she's the goodest girl 💜

Alright, so we've got our size (sort of) and a pattern. Success! Next steps:

Figure out if we need to modify the head in any way to accommodate Tyreal

Determine the best pattern layout for the sizes of wood sheets available

Make an actual file of the pattern that isn't a blurry PNG so we can pull it into Lightburn
