Who have given the top 5 or more (or at least some of your favs of each game you played) best voice acting performances in the life is strange franchise in your opinion?

Oh, this is fun! This is my top 5 ranking, where 1 is the best:

5. Han Soto as Gabe Chen: I think Han's performance is really underrated, but he brought a very believable warmth and gentleness to Gabe that balanced his humor and would've made his character shallow without it. Han's actual voice has a steady cadence to it that you really hear in his performance in Alex's nightmare, where he both guides Alex through her past traumas but also refuses to let her give up. It's this mix of sternness and empathy that sells the delivery of "You were eleven years old!" and reminding Alex she doesn't need to be defined by her trauma. Also irl, Han is basically Gabe in streams and it's so wholesome.

4. Rhianna DeVries as BtS Chloe Price: I was as nervous as everyone else when I heard Ashly wouldn't be returning as Chloe in Before the Storm, but by the end of the game I fully believed Rhianna as a younger Chloe. Rhianna as a person [they use they/them now] is delightful-- if you've listened to any of their interviews, they have such an easygoing and fun sense of humor that's impossible not to like, and they bring a lot of that to Chloe. Part of it is the writing and directing too, but seeing a much dorkier 16-year-old Chloe was so charming because of Rhianna's performance. I still think about lines like "RIGHT IN THE DICK," "but also how well they voice Chloe's more vulnerable moments, like talking quietly to Rachel in her room in "Hell is Empty." I can also tell how much playing Chloe, a queer character, means to them, so I'm glad they got the opportunity to share Chloe's character with Ashly.

3. Hannah Telle as Max Caulfield: Hannah will always be Max to me and I cannot imagine anyone else playing her. What makes Max an interesting case is her character is very understated for a protagonist role in a narrative-driven game. In the original at least, her only big dramatic scene is when she shouts, "This is my storm. I caused this, I caused all of this!" Because Max in the first game is more of a blank slate protagonist, her personality is deliberately more muted compared to Chloe's, Kate's, Victoria's, Nathan's, etc. spikes of emotion and ability to perform more dramatically. Because of that, Hannah voicing all the mundane moments is what makes her performance as a whole so memorable. Overall, she has such a wonderfully sweet, gentle voice that makes it so enjoyable listen to all of Max's hours of inner monologuing, and I love that Hannah's natural voice simply is Max. That being said, I also love Max's more expressive moments in DE, like her wisecracking jokes and when Safi speaks as her, you can hear a distinct difference in Hannah's tone, pitch, and cadence to mimic Olivia Abiassi. I love Hannah's performance for its subtleties over the signature scenes.

2. Erika Mori as Alex Chen: Back in 2021 I wrote an entire post about how much I loved Erika's performance as a first time VA and mocap actress. She embodied Alex-- vocally, physically, and facially-- so fully and so well. I think her standout moments are the nightmare sequence, but these huge emotional moments pay off because Erika also put in the work to capture Alex's little moments too: her playfulness, her humor, her heart, her flirtatiousness, her awkwardness, and her vulnerability.

1, Ashly Burch as LiS1 Chloe Price: Ashly so deserves the big career she's been able to achieve after LiS1, because this is still one of her standout roles. Chloe is deliberately very unlikable in LiS1: she's sharp and quick to anger and unyielding and immature, but DN still presents her as the girl worth saving, and Ashly captures that side of her flawlessly with her equal parts confidence and charisma. Of course, Ashly's standout scene is when she finds Rachel's body in the junkyard and drawn from Ashly's own personal experience with loss-- her cries are gutting. But I also (similar to Rhianna) love when she captures Chloe's humor and dopiness, like "Or did you just rewind because I tried to steal the chair? Shit, I'm confused"; "And then you rewind and I steal the key, and... uh..."; ". She also has to voice Chloe in multiple timelines: she nails younger Chloe without sounding too cartoonishly kiddie, and you can really hear her weariness in the alternate timeline when she's disabled. Max may be the protagonist of Life is Strange with the most lines, but Chloe is the real beating heart of the game, and Ashly embodied that role perfectly.

Thank you for asking! For all my gripes with the production of the games, I've always adored the casts. No matter how polished the games get, they're niche enough to still have that indie feel to them, and the actors don't have that unapproachable celebrity veil over them. Watching their streams has always felt like watching a big supportive friend group than just a cast (with Katy Bentz as the ringleader, of course). I highly recommend checking out the group streams if you haven't already!

so much for stardust / fall out boy - obviously, just came out. i'm going to be very honest the first time i heard it i was a little underwhelmed--the music was really good but i wasn't feeling some of the lyrics? then something (or someone) deeply tragic happened to me and i was like... in my darkest hour, who is there... it's fall out boy... so the album grew on me. i think it's catchy and the music is really good, i definitely don't think the lyrics are as good as pre-hiatus lyrics, but some really get me. i prefer it to AB/AP but MANIA will always be my fav post-hiatus record <3

you're gonna miss it all / modern baseball - i love this album a lot and it's definitely Getting Me at this time in my life due to. events. but also it's just a good album for college - post-college eras so i really relate to it in that aspect, like. "hey the guy that wrote this was the same age i am now we are in a similar phase in life" type deal

¡viva la cobra! / cobra starship - ok so basically everything on this list is tied to Certain Events i've experienced recently and this album is helping me with the whole "fuck it let's party <3" vibe like it really does cheer me up, like yea fuck this emo shit bro let's dance!!! thank u gabe

forget what you know / midtown - ah, the inherent duality of man . cobra starship makes me dance but this album by midtown hits me at my core. i feel like the album has this sort of despair to it that comes with being a young adult in a big world and being sort of lost. even though i'm living in london rn the line "i can't believe how i'm living, lost in manhattan" (from "manhattan") is like, branded onto my soul. like i've been listening to the album in its entirety at night in my apartment with all the lights off and staring at the skyline . also on the topic of albums, idkhow drop the album rn i beg u ok so for four albums i'll tag four people :) @lilmanlillamb @gabesapwhoreta @fagoutboy @1kiss4surrender & anyone who wants to do it, really !

The G’s visit Whitechapel - bethan and has Gabe from radio rebel. gabe’s band comes to town and gets the hots for ethan and you can guess how well that goes with benny around (also pretty funny ngl and in my top favs)

You Matter to Me More Than Anyone - bethan and takes place after the finale and has ethan talk about his trauma with the fear binding basically. its a short and good read

I really enjoyed putting Esteban in one of his first low points throughout his life and with no comfort in sight. Disconnect & Still Here are kind of two sides of the same coin in the breakdown of the Delgado marriage with Ash’s being about of all the trials of motherhood and her jealousy of Victor and Carla’s bond while Victor’s is his realization that his wife is dead, and he is a single dad and dealing with that fallout. Tete a Tete was an emotional Carla piece since we haveN’t heard one word from her since The Magic Within special and I wanted to explore the isolation of the jail cell, the heartbreak over her father and her utter wretchedness with some hope coming in the form of the Captain of the Guard. Song of the Sirenas drabble was just a small piece on what Mateo’s reaction might have been like at the thought of Elena dead after the battle with Shuriki. Starved was my first piece with darker themes since it alludes to her life in poverty so I’m proud of that one. Broken Pieces is another emotional hurt comfort from Elena’s POV in the aftermath of Rise of the Sorceress and dealing with the heartbreak of her Mamí’s crown being broken, symbolizing all the danger she is in now that Shuriki’s back. Finally No room for weakness is another Esteban angst because Esteban always brings on the angst and emotional repression but luckily Elena’s there to pick him up.

Mistletoe is pure unadulterated Eleteo Christmas fluff and one of my best of the Eleteo confesses their feelings stories, I think. Honestly it was just overall a joy to write so I love looking back on it. Saying Goodbye, I was just so proud of this one because it was the first Estenaomi story that popped into my head without the help of prompt. I have some difficulties thinking up scenarios for them for some reason but this one flowed so easily, imagining how young Esteban would be after Naomi’s departure in The Last Laugh. Reunion was just a little fic based on what of the sweetest slow burn romance songs, “This is not my idea” from the Swan Princess. Intrinsic is another Eleteo one and its a fav because it just... I wanted to explore Mateo’s feelings after Elena almost died in Naomi knows best and just give name to the bond that they share. Safe in his eyes explores the same idea with Elena working through her new nightmares of being sacrificed and Mateo, the ever faithful is there to hold her close. Gababel is so fun and sweet to write and it was scarily easy to write Isabel being flustered (way too much experience in the easily flustered department) and of course, the first blush of crush love and having a mature Isabel interact with Gabe. Estoma kiss meme was a departure from the usual frenemy bantering to what I imagine was their initial partnership where they were reserved and feeling each other before unleashing their true personalities. The Estoma drabble started as a drabble but turned into a full length fic-let of what I imagined as a clandestine affair to hate to comfort to frenemies to potential friends which never comes to fruition because Esteban ran off with Ash. Mood Swings was initially inspired by a Kim Possible episode of the same name but evolved into one of my only heartwarming Delgados fic centering around Carla’s birth.Three’s a Crowd was one of my few attempts at Naomi POV which I think I did serviceable job and it was fun to go with a classic love triangle hijinks with suspicious Naomi, scheming Carla and clueless, arrogant Alonso. This is my son is one of the only YJ fics I’ve written down and so I love it because I wanted to include Rocket more into the team and Team dynamics and all that. I don’t write many Gabe POV fics so this one, I’m proud of, especially for giving Gabe a chance to shine in beating up a malvago and never giving up even when stabbed. Finally Coffee Run, a Goldenvibe fic because I wanted them to have a little more closure before the Legends of Tomorrow series started up.

Gabriel Aftercare

Some fluffish nsfw of on of my fav boys (with a hint of angst shhhhh) 

Gabriel purred low in his chest as you scrape away the cooled wax from his sculpted back. The blade leaving goosebumps in its wake, multi colored wax crumbling under your attention. You work in a comfortable silence, your slow pattern of movement lulling you both into a hazy trance. You hum in satisfaction placing the blade on the nightstand reaching for your antiseptic ointment and bandages for the burns and scrapes now littered across his back. “I can do that later.” Gabe rumbled rich brown eyes twinkling in the low light of his room. You smirk rolling your eyes ignoring his objection, still needed to work on that. “Let me take care of you for once ok?” You kiss between his shoulder blades brushing at his sweat soaked hair. “That’s what I’m here for.” “Thought you already did.” His chuckle turns into a huff of surprise at the reprimanding swat you landed on his ass. You laugh catching the briefest hint of pink on his cheeks before he burrowed deeper into the plush pillows. “Smartassery is an unbecoming look on you.” You lied tickling his sides to get him to roll over. Gabe turned leisurely stretching and groaning as his muscles protested before settling back down to let you straddle his hips once more. Clicking your tongue appreciatively you trail a hand down the dark plane of his chest running over his textured skin. It was covered in scars, wax, cuts, and small healing bites. Absolute perfection . Gabriel coughs trying to hide his flush as you tell him as much. Praising his body and performance while you set up to clean off his front half like you did his back. You start off slow and careful around the dips and ridges of his stomach and abdomen scraping off hunks of black and white wax with blade and blunt nails. “One day we should try this on your cock.” You hum more to yourself then your partner but appreciate his sudden gasp and twitch of arousal all the same. He makes no sound as you continue, his breathing becoming more uniformed and slow. His tell tale sign of dozing. Not that you minded, you actually felt pride in it. That a man of his stature and rank could feel safe enough in your presents to let you hold a blade to his throat while you fucked him only then to fall asleep as you tended to him was a gift you charised. Even if you never told him. You finished without any fanfare carefully moving off the drowsy man to collect your things. You had work in the morning and a cab to catch. Silently you packed your bag and head for the apartment door.   Te amo You almost miss the hushed whisper too focused on a stealthy exit, door mere inches from you. You look back at the softness in his war hardened faced, he blinks as if registering that he had spoken aloud. The mood changed quickly. Suddenly he did look so relaxed, the post-coital exhaustion of the evening gone and replaced with a stony tense silence. You could have laughed at the deer in the headlights look he was giving you but none of this was fun anymore. You freeze watching him move to sitting now unable to meet your gaze. His nervous rambling about ‘knowing the rules’ turning into white noise in your ears. This was- should be a deal breaker. It had been before. You drop your bag walking back to his ruffled bed gripping his jaw tightly pulling his face to meet yours. He choked finally meeting your piercing eyes. “Mean it?” Gabe’s throat clicked dryly. “Yes.” He closed his eyes in defeat unable to lie to you, heart plummeting. You wouldn’t come back after this. “ Good. ”

Yes and no, depending on at which point in their respective story we’re talking about haha Josh and Chris are in love with each other, and so are Max and Leo (well, their situation is a bit… uncommon, but if I were ever to write their story they’d be together in the end) - I once posted about Gabe and Hector, and by the end of their story they’re in a poly relationship with a girl named Erica I’ve never posted about. Luca has a love (?) interest of sort but he’s not been posted about yet hohoho maybe sometime in the near future. Still deciding about Isa and Ana’s relationship, but maybe. Who knows? That’s about it as far as the ones I’ve posted about go :D

She is!! She’s sort of a jock, a bit of a dummy and really loud, she’s easy to make laugh and got the type of laughter that makes you wanna laugh with her so when she’s around the mood is always a good one! She’s not exactly a social butterfly, but she’s got no problems with socializing, knows by instinct how to bend her behaviour to fit with all types of people and has the incredible ability to have every and all awkward situations fly right over her head, she just doesn’t notice them, and that makes it hard to be anything but relaxed when she’s around. She’s actually how she and Ana got in the group, since she’s gym buddies with Leo! She also really really likes ball sports :D

Ana’s an introvert all the way through, on the other hand - she’s really witty and sassy when she feels comfortable enough, and sarcasm is her preferred way of communicating, but if she doesn’t know you/ too many people she isn’t 100% comfortable with are around she comes off as timid and closed off, smiles politely and barely utters a word - people assume she’s the subdued and shy type at first so once she starts opening up it’s always sort of a shock haha she’s got a scientific mind and while she isn’t a “gifted kid” like Chris she likes to learn and study a lot, which is why she ended up having a real great relationship with Chris specifically out of everyone in the group (they like to nerd out together) (Josh isn’t particularly happy about it, the jelly idiot)

I'm sorta confused why it seems so many people ship Gabrinette. Not only is it a no-no because of the child grooming thing you were talking about, but I don't see much going for it otherwise? I'm not trying to be rude I just don't get it, even if they were both adults they don't seem very compatible. What do you think?

Short answer: I don’t understand it either; I block it. I block and unfollow people who post it and honestly I haven’t seen any Gabbunette content in months. I highly suggest you do the same, nonny; it makes for a much better Tumblr experience. 

Long Answer/A Mountain of Ship-Hate under the cut. 

I don’t know, it’s especially skeevy when you consider Marinette hero-worships Gabriel and the degree of influence he has over her career/art. The thing they have going for them is “fashion” and a common theme I’ve noticed is Marinette “redeeming” Gabriel through love (as though it’s a girl’s job to suffer so a villain can be a better person). It’s quite a bit like Rey-Lo in that regard, where an assertive female character is relegated to sex-fuel for the conventionally attractive(???) male villain to consume and be transformed by. It’s the “Beauty and the Beast” shit stripped of any subtly and reduced to wish fulfillment by people who want to see their precious villainous favs redeemed. 

Gabriel is also a rich White Man, and people see him as inherently worth redeeming while arguing that characters like Lila and Chloe (a child who’s biggest sin is that she’s selfish and bitchy) are irredeemable akuma causers/the real monsters behind the menace threatening Paris. People are quick to hop over the fact that Gabriel is willing to brainwash and kill (Timebreaker anyone?) to get his hands on something that doesn’t belong to him, and has been shown to be nothing but aloof, distant, and controlling to his own child. 

This is excusable because he’s attractive(okay really? really, people? I know I’m new to this liking guys thing but come on.) and White to the point where people are so desperate to believe that he isn’t actually Hawkmoth (despite sharing facial features, voice actors, and an obsession with Adrien’s mother). I bet you money that no one would stan Gabe so hard if he wasn’t paler than raw bread dough and affluent. And I bet you money no one would ship him with the protagonist either. 

Like people would rather ship Marinette with a man her father’s age (or older) than with Nino or Kim or any of her female classmates. Like until very recently, the Gabrinette and Ninette tags on Ao3 were dead even and there’s still so much more content shipping a teenager with a grown ass villain than there is shipping her with a kind, supportive POC her own goddamn age. They would rather see Marinette with someone who routinely neglects her friends than with a girl whose biggest crime is telling a white lie. They leap over the diverse cast of characters to pair the hero of the story with a shallow, cruel, and frankly unattractive white man to satisfy some kind of carnal desire. And the fact that so much of it’s NSFW makes my skin itch. 

This is not an invitation to explain to me why I should buy into a ship that requires so much mental gymnastics to remove most of its toxicity. I don’t care if you use it to cope; I don’t care if you bend over backwards to erase the power imbalances inherent in the relationship. I don’t care if there’s good art or good stories because I want nothing to do with it. So if you stumble on this and feel compelled to try and explain to me why Marinette belongs with a fifty year old with delusions of supervilliany, please save yourself the time. As it is your right to interact with fiction in whatever way you want to, it is my right to voice my disgust with fandom trends that are quite frankly appalling to me.

Give a Beat Hosts Giant Jenga at Dirtybird Campout 2017

Give a Beat Partnered with Dirtybird Campout to Bring Artist Led Giant Jenga Games to Festival Goers to Raise Money for Give a Beat Mentoring Programs for Previously Incarcerated Youth (Lake Antonio, Monterrey County  —  October 6 -8)

We’re still reveling in the afterglow of the amazing time we had  at Dirtybird Campout as the official nonprofit partner. We participated in the festival’s games and activities with  our tried and true Give a Beat jenga games for justice. We were exhilarated to work with such a positive company and loving fan base.

Thank you to all the artists who signed up to compete in the games and who were extremely enthusiastic and supportive of our involvement:  Ardalan, Britta Arnold, Christian Martin, Claude VonStroke, Chris Lorenzo, Cut Snake, Dances With White Girls, Deron Delgado, DJ E-Clyps, DJ Deeon, Don Rimini, Gene Farris, Justin Martin, J.Phlip, Lux Groove, kLL sMTH, Mark Starr, Sirus Hood, Unicorn Fukr, Walker & Royce, and Will Clarke.

When we arrived, we were so warmly welcomed by the Dirtybird staff. Everyone made sure we were well accommodated and prepared for the weekend’s activities. The venue was absolutely stunning, with its abundant shade and rolling hills — a perfect for the various Campout games.

Our activities began Friday in the Craftopia area, where we set up our jenga decorating booth. We set out all the team buckets to gather donations and get people hyped up for the games the next day. A fun and creative crowd flowed into our shady patch throughout the day to see what we were up to and catch a break from the hot sun.  The most rewarding moments happened when we talked to people about why we host the jenga games. People’s eyes lit up! Festival goers showed genuine interest and compassion for our programs and anger about the state of our criminal justice system. We enjoyed seeing the time and effort people put into their block decorations, all while learning a bit more about why we do what we do.

On Saturday, game day finally arrived! We set up in the Treefort Taproom beer garden right by the main stage. We were thrilled to be able to hear DJs play  amazing sets while we enjoyed the  comfort of the beautiful  beer garden. It’s not often you find DJs playing jenga next to a boat, a treehouse, and a bar.

DJ E-Clyps and kLL sMTH started the games with three rounds. Fans who came for a cold beer stayed for some hot games. After DJ E-Clyps and kLL sMTH kicked things off, the games officially began with Cut Snake and Chris Lorenzo versus Give a Beat Jenga veterans Will Clarke, Walker & Royce, and their guest, Dances With White Girls. The vets played a few rounds and kept their winning streak alive!

The next teams up for the challenge were the Dirtybird all stars team, Jengamaster Fearquake 5000 — Justin Martin, Christian Martin, and J.Phlip against super special guests Wood Holly and Britta Arnold aka Jengaboys! We’ve never seen jenga towers teeter like they did in this round. The competition was fierce, but team Jengamaster Fearquake 5000 came out on top!

The Martin brothers had to leave, but J.Phlip kept the games going by bringing in fans to compete. Big thank you to the fans who donated $100 to play the games against her! We’re so grateful for her fan match and that everyone involved had a good time. “Had so much fun! It was one of my fav campout activities,” J.Phlip told us.

After J.Phlip, Ardalan, Unicorn Fukr, Gene Farris, and Sirus Hood stepped up. We need to give major props to Sirus Hood for showing up in a wrestling robe in the spirit of true competition!

After their thrilling match, we closed out the games with no other than the main man himself Claude VonStroke! The amazing Team Lux (Lux Groove, Mark Starr, William Brown aka Hot Pot, and Maranda Miglionico) battled it out against Team Blacklight (DeRon Delgado, DJ Deeon, Don Rimini and Claude)!

Thanks to everyone who made these games a reality. We raised $3,170 at Dirtybird Campout!  Your donations from this event go toward our mentoring program, which just kicked off, by expanding our music-inspired graphic design program for previously incarcerated youth. Students will learn how to work with a DJ’s brand, basic design programs, how to manage a client, and how to research job opportunities.

We fell a bit short of our fundraising goal at Dirty Campout, but it’s not too late for fans like you to donate to this program. The closer we get to our fundraising goal, the more students we can include in our programs. For every $700 raised, we can set one student up with an 8-week course, including Adobe Design Suite and a laptop. Donate here.
