like i can still feel the same bewilderment as when i first heard tattoo after already hearing that it's favored to win. sometimes even if it feels weird that the winner is almost set in stone, you can hear the song and be like, that makes sense. but here i just think it was loreen being loreen~~~~ someone with a global hit, a 'legitimising' force (in the eyes of the music industry). it wasn't even the best jury-kind of song this year. the juries are just too insular and got too swept up in the loreen hype.

one thing i still genuinely do not understand is why all of these teen shows set in high school aren't just set in college instead. when i think of all the shows i watched in my teens/early 20s they all have the exact same problems and all of those problems could be solved if they were just. set in college instead?????????? actors don't look 16?? that's cool bc they're in college so they can reasonably be anywhere from 18-24. parents seemingly non-existent or disappear for episodes at a time??? nbd all the characters moved out for college so they don't see their parents that often. characters going to endless parties, having unlimited access to alcohol, and sleeping with a different person every ep??? sure makes a lot more sense if they're in college!!!! characters randomly having free time in the middle of the day??? everyone's college schedule is different!
like!!! there are so many shows that completely lose the run of themselves by s3 bc their characters start off 16 and now they're supposed to be graduating and all the plans they had and colleges they wanted to go to now need to Go Away bc they need a reason for them all to still stay in the same setting which means basically messing up 2-3 seasons worth of character development. and i just cannot understand how none of these tv execs thought, hey maybe if we make them freshman in college this would make more sense bc we'd at least have a plan for 4 seasons and even if we reach graduation we could still feasibly transition them into their career paths without disrupting the existing dynamic??????????? teenagers would still watch that, the demographic wouldn't change???????? college is still a tumultuous time where people are growing and learning and making mistakes and having new experiences?????????? where are all the shows set in college where are they?????????????????????????

It's actually crazy how in the first half of JJK it was talked about as having one of the strongest female casts ever seen in shounen and then it pivots so hard in the second half that it's a running joke in the fandom where we expect any woman in JJK to have their potential as characters wasted/fully killed off. Another Gege Akutami clown moment.

I wish more people understood that Sega / Sonic Team carefully scrutinizes and approves every single issue of the IDW comics before they get printed and release, down to characters' facial expressions.
This isn't like the wild west of the 90s where people like Penders were allowed to do whatever they wanted. Scripts and storyboards are sent to Sega for approval multiple times for every issue. And the IDW team has to make the requested changes before it can print. One example that has been specifically mentioned was when Amy hugged Sonic in the "Chao Races and Badnik Bases" arc. Evan originally drew a little blush on Sonic's cheeks. Sega said "no" because Sonic doesn't show that much vulnerable emotion, and so Evan had to revise the panel to remove the blush. The oversight is that finite. Absolutely NOTHING gets put in the IDW comics that is against Sega or Sonic Team's ideas for their characters and brands. Like it or hate it, but that's simple fact.
So when you hear, "Sega wants to bring the comics and games (and potentially the shows) under the same canon umbrella" — yeah, it makes sense! Because while Sonic Team might not be crafting the comics themselves, they ARE overseeing their creation and are approving every story beat and facial expression contained within. They know exactly what is happening in the comics, are actively working to keep them in line with the current vision for the Sonic brand, etc. If they're working to keep them in line with their current vision for the games anyway, why NOT tie them all together? Especially when the comics have helped bring a new generation of kids to the franchise (similarly to how the movies did) while also being compliant with the games (unlike the movies). It just makes sense.
I understand that people who are perhaps more used to stories about what the Archie comics were like in the 90s might have reservations. But for good or for ill, the IDW comics are a completely different beast, despite having a lot of the same crew. I'm not saying Sega are overbearing evil overlords who don't let the IDW team have any fun (personally I think it's clear the team has a lot of fun working on the comics), because hell, they let a zombie pandemic arc happen. But I am saying that nothing that happens in the comics happens without Sega's express approval, right down to whether Sonic is allowed to blush when Amy hugs him or not. You still don't have to like the comics, everyone has different tastes and that's cool. But just know that the comics are Sega-approved panel by panel, so if you have an issue, take it up with them. Ultimately, they're the ones who get final say.

God the sticker sheet is going to be just as atrocious as Job Job’s isn’t it?
Y’know, why put in the effort of designing original Yõkai when you could just jerk yourself off and shove references up the wazoo? It’s not like doing this strips the game of it’s own identity and eventually everything you make is going to be so malnourished from the constant coprophagy that you’re going to have nothing going for you. No, because why should you try anymore when you could pander?

one thing about his dark materials fans is that they will never be satisfied
#the show is done 97% of them i have blocked i can talk shit now#i am SO satisfied with all the artist choices in one or another and my biggest gripe? actually turned out good!#i feel like i can rest then i see people. still complaining. my brother in xaphania REST#bro also complain about something else other than the two shitty parents#im so tired of seeing them pasted everywhere and all the tumblr essay energy spent on them#its been like that since day 1 and i hate it#focus on will parry#its weird that after watching all 3 seasons people are still clinging to the same fandom opinions they had before it started#has it not. changed your perspective? did you feel like you could appreciate the differences?#and if you did or didn’t like them then ponder them? wonder what the process of choice and adaptation was like?#no its just people complaining about no enough daemons#and jumping the gun to complain about the mulefa ‘not’ having wheels (but they did)#and complaints that characterization wasnt identical to text and pullman#grow up fr#who cares i like jack thorne’s take better than the original#i couldve enjoyed less marisa screen time but whichever lady got their hands on her character had fun and honestly i like that#they went fucking crazy. good for her#i come back 2 years later and see that no one has matured past the need for their fav book to be adapated ‘perfectly’ (the way THEY want!)#idk become a writer and make your own if you want it that bad#theres very little appreciation for how the show Was but a big focus on how people think it Should’ve Been#what a fucking waste on the fandom’s part#like. appreciate what you got or go back to pouring over those books

People also fail to factor in Toshiro's mental & physical state, as well as the chimera!Falin reveal, when he finally snaps at Laios and they have that big fight
He is visibly exhausted and had been skipping meals when Laios explains the details of their journey. I love Laios, and I understand why he felt safe to tell Toshiro all that information, but that was a lot to dump on the guy, especially cuz dark magic is HIGHLY illegal. Kabru manages to calm the situation but then they immediately get attacked by chimera!Falin who kills most of the people across THREE parties, Toshiro yells at Marcille about Falin cuz well dark magic was used and now she's a mostly mindless killing machine, then without thinking Laios slaps him for getting angry?? No wonder he finally snapped! Toshiro's mental & physical state also contributes to why he was so calloused in telling Laios how he really felt around him
I saw a post of their fight long before I got into dunmeshi and read the manga myself, and it left out all that info I mentioned above, so I decided "hey fuck this guy" immediately after seeing the post. But then I read the manga myself and when I got to that scene it was wildly different, there was a lot of context and nuance the post omitted that made the fight miserable to read for both Laios and Toshiro sakes
Yes, Toshiro unfortunately hurt Laios in a similar way that people intentionally did in his past, but they also parted on amicable terms with Toshiro giving Laios the bell to call him for help anytime (which Laios accidentally uses to cause Toshiro MORE grief with by unknowingly ringing it 24/7 lol)
i feel like not enough ppl are factoring in the cultural clash between laios and shuro and the many micro agressions shuro faced while being in their group. literally the name 'shuro' in itself is one
Tumblr media
his name is toshiro 😭 lets also not forget that he has his own communication issues, in the opposite way that laios does- thats literally a factor in their argument, that his envy for laios's ability to express himself sincerely manifested as part of his distaste for him.
ig all this to say like, was their fight heart wrenching, especially when reading laios as autistic? absolutely. anybody whos ever been in laios's position knows how much it hurts to realize someone you thought was your friend doesnt actually like having you around, especially when they didnt tell you and you had no way of knowing due to not understanding their cues. but im begging yall to step back and see the nuance of this situation cause im gonna be real a lot of you are kinda just brushing over it acting like everything is toshiros fault and that hes a terrible person when in reality hes an average guy who really, really clashed with laios and it led to a very long misunderstanding due to their supremely opposite methods of communication. even laios and toshiro, after letting everything out in their fight, were able to come to an understanding and start a foundation for an actual friendship built on better communication

something to consider: you can also subscribe to tumblr blogs via RSS - or at least you can if they have a custom theme enabled; not sure if it works on blogs that don't. if i unfollowed some blogs on tumblr itself to follow them via RSS instead, i could still click through to the original post to interact if i wanted to!
but. i always find it jarring to click on a link in an email or an RSS feed and be catapulted into my browser (i use thunderbird for email on desktop so it's a separate application). don't ask me why, it just bothers me. plus you can't right-click on the link and make decisions like opening it in a new tab, opening it in a specific type of tab etc. (i use container tabs a lot)
so maybe i should use an RSS reader that is also in my browser??? like feedly (except not feedly because i hate it), or a browser add-on. but i am already firefox add-ons georg and keep trying to use fewer of them 😳

kinda related to previous reblog. i have to complain real quick
#so as i said my friend and i go and listen to goth bands playing here whenever theres an event#which is sadly pretty rarely#also the events are never just goth events they always gotta have metal or punk bands there too#which i dont mind but my friend fucking hates the specific genres of metal and punk bands that play at like technically goth events#ANYWAYS#my friend doesnt even live in the same city as i do but theres no scene in hers and im pretty close by so we use my city#me being indoctrinated to joining her when she wants to enjoy live music began with going to see she past away with her to a city a bit#further away from both of us#well. i had been to some gigs with her at that point already but they were a completely different thing so anyways#and then we also went and saw clan of xymox. was amazing.#anyways. they had this local to me band as an opener and i instantly fell in love with their music so it became extra easy#to drag me to whatever events. that i would have loved to go to anyways.#bc im a simple man i will say yes if you ask me to go and listen to live music with you even if i don't know the band or whatever#ANYWAYS. after that. we went to this one local to me kind of like a goth night#and there was this woman who was like. idk. over 30 under 40. but she was hanging out with some really drunk 18 year olda#and she saw us and was like omg i havent seen you two before you are so young let me introduce these kids to you hehe#i think she was desperately trying to be a bat mom#and idk. i just dont like her. but my biggest gripe with her is when she asked us about some bands#and we were like 'oh we saw clan of xymox last week' she fucking said. something about that gaining us 'scene points'#i dont care if it was a joke that rubbed me the wrong way so much#and it might seem like a small thing but yknow sometimes you just dont get along with someone for small reasons or no reason at all#last event we went to she was there again and regognized us and tried to introduce us to more teenagers#which. ok one of them was 20 and also kind of a co worker and someone ive done cosplay with so it was nice catching up#but still idk just. i hate disliking someone for no good reason. but some types of people just really manage to annoy me and i dont like it#next event is in december and i s2g if she comes up to as again. im sure shes just trying to be nice and let her teenager friends get some#friends but i dont want that and idk what my fucking problem with her is#but my main point was the fucking scene points comment.

Just a quick aside: Cultural appropriation is absolutely an issue, not because we oppose cultural diffusion, which naturally occurs, but because of the power imbalance. I'm Chinese American, and my people have been shamed out of wearing our cultural clothes, eating our own food, and face the bamboo ceiling where we cannot access certain industries or jobs or get promoted without working three times as hard. You might be used to seeing Asian faces in Hollywood now, but this is such a big deal because 10 years ago, we would have been allowed maybe one side character who acted as a femme fatale or nerd or whatever stereotype people apply to us. That's a lot of actors being kept from getting paid, and a lot of young children being discouraged by a lack of visibility, just because of their faces and names. Appropriation means you took our own autonomy to be. And then you took it for literal financial compensation for yourself. I'm not coming for the above poster, because they didn't explicitly say "cultural appropriation is fake," merely made the case for cultural diffusion being natural and not an inherently shameful thing. The above poster is solid and correct in everything they have said, and I'm glad someone finally out and said it, considering how much I hear from people from China or different parts of Europe about how my country "has no culture." I am proof of that culture's existence. However, the "cultural diffusion is natural" argument is often used to dismiss the very real struggles we minorities face in the United States, and we get gaslit enough. Practicing our culture can literally be dangerous. My friends and I have been talking about wearing our traditional clothing because we like it so much, but one of the biggest worries we and our families have are 1) that we'll get harassed like FUCK. Racial harassment already happens to us regularly, why add to the fire? And 2) anti-Asian hate crimes spiked during the 2020 because, surprise surprise, anyone with a vaguely "Asian-looking" face was attacked because we're obviously all carrying the virus (sarcasm). Why would we make it easier for people to target us? Meanwhile, a white person wears a qipao (sometimes to a Japanese event, I've seen this shit so much I just expect it at this point lol) and no one bats an eye.
The issue isn't that you wear the clothes or eat our food, the issue is when you decide you're suddenly an expert who's qualified to explain it to someone who's lived it, suffered for it, and now guards it. If I wear a sari on the street, I'm gonna be humble about it. If I'm wearing cornrows and Black Americans say something, I'm gonna gently explain why (for sports purposes, this is literally a purely pragmatic norm in the sport I do lol), and not immediately get defensive and up-in-arms about it, which is how people usually respond when people ask them, "Hey, that was kinda racist, can you not do or say that?" Don't let me even get started on the people who decide to profit off of it, like opening a shitty "pan-Asian" restaurant where you're charging 20 bucks for like six dumplings served in a Chinese takeout box or the people who tried to "reinvent" mahjong. It's not cute, it's disrespectful and the result of a much bigger issue.
We can't get integrated into the "white" identity like the Irish, Italians, Germans, or Scandinavians did because our appearances and names won't allow it, but they'll actively harm us for it until our own culture doesn't feel safe, and then take our autonomy to do something as simple as practice our own culture for profit.
So while we're here, this just bears repeating and emphasizing.
'White Americans don't have any culture, they're just [normal/boring/generic/empty]. 'Culture' is when you're quaint and exotic and have interesting ethnic foods and holidays." is such a grating bit of nonsense to have somehow become progressive commonsense in a lot of places.

One of my biggest gripes with Veilguard is absolutely no acknowledgement of Zevran, the Crow lore established in his backstory, and what a pain in the ass he's been to the crows over the years so I've decided the reason the Crows are so different from how they're described in Origins is because Zevran terrorized the Crows so much they completely changed their modus operandi to be less shit and are so scared of the specter of Zevran Arainai that they dare not speak his name in fear of summoning him to wreck holy hell upon them.
