Tumblr media
CHOSO—
forensics major with a minor in chemistry and music
only knows gojo, geto, and nanami through volleyball
supports the team solely bc his freshman brother, yuji, plays
is not in the frat but gets invited to every party
also because he's the best dj any of them know
doodles on himself with a pen
has all the piercings
his ears are decked out with mostly studs
has a right eyebrow piercing, bridge, septum, and snake bites
probably has his nipples pierced too (he lost a dare)
hangs out with geto so they can share nail polish when he paints his nails
is the quiet one at parties who's awkwardly sitting on the couch while he sips his drink
once he's drunk he's entirely different, way more open and talkative
would talk your ear off about music if you let him
or the several different ways blood can splatter and how it'll never look the same twice
is a LIGHT WEIGHT!!
sleeper build
is an alt/grunge boy through and through
is a drummer!
TOJI—
is the frat's “overseer” and the volleyball coach
is actually a decent coach but really he just got lucky to have a great team that makes him look better than he is
gets noise complaints all the time about the frat
does not care, he's at the parties too
is a horrible, horrible influence
probably acts more like a bouncer than anything
provides the alcohol
does not let a single soul under 21 in though
is the hot dad every girl wants
sweatpants and tight shirts all day everyday
has beef with gojo
only because gojo ends up damaging the house and getting into wayyy too much trouble
takes everyone out to eat after games, has too many beers, puts the tab solely on gojo and dips
is a very, very handsy drunk
has to be watched at parties when he gets too drunk cause he’ll hit on all the girls
NANAMI—
a business major with a minor in biology, hopes to open his own small time clinic one day
plays on the male volleyball team, is a middle blocker
works out all the time, has a schedule for everything
is known for his "dark academia" style
hates large parties
the only reason he's ever at a party is because he was dragged there by gojo and geto
you can find him in the other room petting the dog
doesn't drink a lot at parties, will maybe have one if he's in the mood
is the rightful dd!!
literally the only voice of reason
always gets you your fav food after parties when he knows you're a little tipsy
would 1,000% rather be home reading
if he ever gets drunk, has to be inside his own home
he's a sleepy, "admits to everything" drunk
you've strictly forbidden gojo from being anywhere near nanami when he's drunk
probably in charge of all snacks for any party
considers gojo a friend but not a friend you’d invite to your wedding
would invite choso to the wedding though
is def saving himself for “the one”
GETO—
double major in psychology & philosophy, has a minor in art(sculpting)
doesn't do any sports but goes to every one of his friend's volleyball games
he and gojo 100% have matching tongue piercings
contacts during the day, wears reading glasses at night
wears nothing but baggy, oversized clothes
def has a streetwear aesthetic
sleeper build 2.0
is an orphan but was adopted into a very well off family
got into college solely on scholarships though
has known, and been best friends, with gojo since childhood
can drink gallos of alcohol and hardly feel tipsy at all like he’s a heavy weight!!
can out drink anyone, even toji
a flirty, flirty drunk
bi king!!!
participated in an orgy once
has the highest body count out of all the men (besides toji ofc)
an instigator especially when it comes to gojo
gojo and him are in charge of inviting people to the parties
also has his nipples pierced but no one knows, not even gojo
covered in tattoos, def has a throat tattoo along with full sleeves and even some on his thighs
him and choso hang out just to paint their nails and drink tea together!!
GOJO—
majors in astrophysics, minors in astromath
plays on the same team as nanami, is a setter/spiker combo
still is addicted t to sweets
has to have sweets to study
is 50% jock and 50% nerd
thinks math and science is so cool
has a matching tongue ring with geto
has a style that screams "old money" (he def came from old money tho)
def think he could pull a “surfer” style off too
a nepo baby too
a horrible influence especially when he’s drunk
“I’ll give you $20 to break this antique vase.”
when he gets drunk-drunk he is just as flirty as geto but is a little more shy
tipsy gojo, talkative, flirty, comedian!! runs all over the place, makes friends easily
absolutely drunk gojo, timid, gets quiet and watches everything and everyone, would 100% tell you in a quiet voice that he loves you before he HIDES
not a light weight at all he just constantly goes over his limit to end up black out drunk
turns bright, bright red as soon as alcohol hits his system
questioning bi!! (experimented with geto once when they were younger)
lost a dare and had to get a horrible tattoo on his ass
the tattoo is squid doodle from spongebob but really badly drawn because a friend def did it

Why is everyone so biased toward One Piece? Literally every character from One Piece I see is the ugliest creature I've ever had the discourtesy to lay eyes on and they're winning by a landslide against genuinely attractive characters.
Oh boy, we've gone over this a couple times but it's been probably a month or two. It's not so much biased as it is a large and organized fandom. Plus good writing can make anyone hot even though the art style can take some getting used to.
Let me explain some fandoms have dedicated blogs that do nothing but reblog polls so that fandom can vote in random fandom related polls all in one place. Now in tournaments it is very unfair sometimes because they can organize themselves and rally to sway a vote quickly. Now I know one piece and bleach do have dedicated blogs when it comes to anime fandoms. Other non-anime fandoms that I know have blogs are Star Trek, Star Wars and Ninjago. I only know this because I used to be really big into voting in tournaments poll.
Plus I do normally share the Fandom overall week in review list and the anime and manga list. This shows the most popular Fandom related trends of the past week by Tumblr's own data. And as someone who's been following that page just for fun since probably 2012, one piece frequently is in the top 20 on the overall chart and I don't think I've ever seen it not in the top five on the anime and manga chart. The fandom is just that large and active. I mean one piece frequently trends when a new chapter or episode drops. It's just how it is.
And as someone who used to despise one piece, I did give it a shot after I watched and enjoyed the live action. Now it's actually one of my favorite animes. However, the manga is so much better due to the less than stellar pacing of the anime. The only reason I'm looking forward to the remake so much is for fixed pacing then maybe more people would give one piece of chance. Because the story and the writing is so good. However, the art style is not everyone's cup of tea and I do understand that and that is probably the number one complaint.
Fun fact, at one point there was a group of you campaigning to get one piece characters banned from my polls because the art style was misogynistic. Luckily that was short-lived because I was about to start blocking people. So let's not start that up again.
Now I will concede that the one piece fandom does like to do cursed polls And definitely request ugly characters on occasion just to watch the world burn. You know who you are. But we're talking about a show that has furries and fish people and characters that can turn into dragons and snake hybrids and dinosaur people. So there's a lot of variety in your humanoids not all of them are hot
I know it bothers a lot of people that one piece wins so many polls but I see this as a case of don't hate the player. Hate the game. So if you can't beat them, join them. So I would recommend if this really pisses you off so much start your own blog dedicated to reblogging polls for whatever fandom you think needs one. So you can start rallying and organizing your fandom against the one piece fandom so you can try to take them down. Don't know if it'll work but it's a start. Again, learn from them and use their tactics against them

I saw Transformers One. I am so normal about it (SPOILERS AHEAD)
Tumblr media
(Some OC doodles to hide the spoilers! If you have a cool name for her, lemme know ^^)
Honest Review: 9/10
I went in with high expectations and I was not disappointed. The best summary I can think of is that this movie is truly a love letter to the fans.
I could rant for days, but I'm gonna break it down into sections so I don't talk myself in circles ^^
Story:
The story focusing on how the war began was such a good move on the writers' part! It showed a version of Cybertron that I haven't really seen in other Transformers films, and the setting was incredibly explored.
When it comes to the origins of Cybertron and the whole "Primus/Unicron" battle, I think it was well explained considering the limited time they have in the movie.
Overall, a well-paced and actually interesting NON-HUMAN-FOCUSED story, but I will agree with others that I just wish the movie had more time to explain some things. That's basically my only complaint: the movie wasn't long enough 😭
Art:
The animation style is gorgeous, and really takes inspiration from that Retro/VHS style and colours and merges them with a shiny modern look. It took a good chunk of inspiration from the 80s vibes and I think that really showed how much care was put into it.
When it comes to the designs, I freaking LOVE the way we see them level up throughout the movie!
Characters:
Orion Pax/OP = I loved him. I will love him in every continuity, but this one especially, showing him with all his flaws and then how he rises above them for what he believes. His relationship with D-16 was so well built up, and to see it torn down so harshly as the movie went on was the level of brutal I was expecting.
The scene where he finally gets the Matrix of Leadership was SO well done. My hype for Solus Prime will never die.
D-16 = He needs a hug so badly. He's the classic tale of "Never meet your heroes". To see him shift from "I made peace with my misery, why did you have to ruin it?" To "I'm going to destroy the people who made me this way" was such a painful thing to watch. But I can't even be mad because this is literally what Megatron's whole story is about.
His origin will almost always come from a point of seeing injustice and wanting to rise against it, and they showed the lengths he'd go to really well here.
Elita One = MY QUEEN. I will follow this woman into battle any day of the week (and so would Shockwave). I feel like there was a point where she was mainly just regarded as "Orion/Optimus' GF", but they really separated her from that stereotype in this. She's not just "pink Orion Pax", she's a character in her own right.
Seeing Orion have to earn her respect helped show just why the two hold each other in high regard. I hope we get to see more of her as a Commander in the sequel!
BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE = MY PRECIOUS BOY. Okay, there was a point in the trailer where I was really worried he was going to just be the comic relief character who makes a joke every time something serious is happening, but instead he's an awkward bot who means well. He doesn't always get it right, but he also doesn't actively mess things up for the group.
Bumblebee's wholesomeness was so well captured especially the part where he's like "Orion Orion! Watch me cut these guys in half!" While the guys in question are literally running away in fear. He's so cute, I can't. I am going to fight D-16 if he's actually the one who tears out his voicebox, I swear to Primus.
Can you tell who my favourite is? ^^
Favourite details:
- Starscream's high-pitched voice origin. The second he started sounding like that I was like "OHHHHH, MEGS DID THAT?!?!"
- "I'm...speechless" BEEEEE STAAAAWWP
- Alpha Trion's "ROAR" era.
- Sentinel's Death. I love that we can get away with gore in PG films when it comes to robots. Man literally got snapped in half like a KitKat, and the age rating people were like "...yeah, 5-year-olds can watch this"
- Origins of the Decepticon symbol being from Megatronus. Before, I just headcanonned Megs sitting over a desk with several balled up bits of paper trying to come up with a super cool symbol to show his Ex that he'd moved on (he hasn't)
- Chromia's little moment of rage when she won the Iacon 5000. Not enough people talk about Chromia, but I love how Ironhide matches her wild, slightly-unhinged energy.
Conclusion: Hasbro, more movie, please
I NEED to know where this goes. This movie is such a fresh change of pace from all the hesitation and back and forth in recent years. There have been so many different series and continuities starting up that it seems Hasbro is unsure of which one will stick, but this is my plea to them:
YOU HAVE STRUCK ENERGON, HERE, DO NOT WASTE IT
We're getting a sequel either way, but it's up to Hasbro whether that's written by them or by a hero on AO3 or Fanfiction.net
Thank you for coming to my TED talk. I have several nights of crying to do now.

Patrick is an overachiever and wants to make you finish faster than a phone call.
((Edit; I got carried away again.))
((Edit edit; i love him, i love him, i love him. I want him, I want him, I want him))
"I'm telling you, it was the worst date ever." Art moaned. He had been out on another unsuccessful set up to help him get Tashi out of his mind. "Theres no way, I have had the worst date ever." You bragged and smiled at him. Patrick passed you the bottle and you took another swig as he watched you. "I've never had a bad date." He said smugly. Art and you roll your eyes at him. "She didn't laugh at all, she didn't know anything about tennis." Art tried to ignore Patricks comment and go back to his point. "All your goods for is tennis right Art?" Patrick was trying to cheer him up in the only way that he knew, by annoying him and getting under his skin. "Not me." Patrick smiled and took the bottle back from you. "Come on then, tell us about your bad dates, take Arts mind off it." He smirked looking at you. Those eyes, that smug grin that he does. "Well, I had this recent tinder date..." you trailed off slightly, trying to see if Patrick could get a little bit jealous but it wasn't his style. He acts like he doesn't care. "We had been talking for ages and ages, he was smart and cute and funny... I liked him a lot." You tried to explain it more and more but Patrick was losing interest. "It's a bad date story, get to the bad date." He laughed. "I'm getting there jeez. so we're in my bed, everything is great... but it lasted literally five seconds."
Patrick straightened his back before leaning back against the sofa. "What did?" You were trying to be coy and to leave bits of it private but that was never going to happen. "The sex. I swear it was barely in and he finished." You took another gulp of beer and realised that it was probably too much information. Patrick gave you a hearty laugh. "Couldn't be me." Art and you rolled your eyes at him again. "Well I was very nice about it, very understanding, you know... it happens, it could be considered a compliment but then he said 'did you cum?' to me... as if I had the chance(!!). I couldn't understand why he even thought I was close. I'm telling you, no girl has ever EVER finished that quickly." You waited for Patrick to make his smart ass comment before Art took the drink away from you. "I don't get any complaints." Art speaks up and Patrick put his arm around him. "That's my boy." He placed a kiss on his cheek. "I hope you didn't lie to this poor man and you told him what you need." Patrick is so sexually supportive. "Well you see, thats when he pipped up and said 'he doesn't do that." You grabbed the drink again. "Do what?" Art had been pulled into the story. "ANYTHING, there was no foreplay, there was no offer of foreplay or play of any kind." You laughed telling them. Patrick started clapping and Art joined in. "You win. Best bad date." You pretended to take a bow as they joined in laughing. "Whats your record Art?" Patrick leaned back. "Record?" You questioned. "You know, how quickly you can make yourself cum?" Patrick said so matter of factly, as if it was obviously the answer. "I don't know Patrick, I don't time it." Art dismissed him. "Probably ten minutes for me." You offered before he had a chance to ask. Patrick looked at you smiling. You wondered if he was trying to picture it.
"She's calling!" Art almost jumped out of his skin as his phone started vibrating. "Tashi's calling." He stood up almost instinctively. Patrick took his turn to roll his eyes at Arts excitement. He eagerly answered, sorting himself and sorting out his hair. "Hey tashi." He said it so casually like he wasn't freaking out seconds ago. He gave himself the signal to excuse himself and Patrick watched him leave and close the door behind him. "So ten minutes huh?" He grinned at you again and you shrugged your shoulders as he moved himself closer. Before you tried to retort to him, his lips were on yours and he was kissing you. And you were kissing him back. Kissing you deeply, breathtakingly. His hands were on your neck and running up your thighs, playing with the fabric of your dress. He pulled your lip between his teeth as he started kissing your neck. Your moaning, it's almost instinctive under his touch. "Yeah, you like this?" He kissed at your neck so roughly and you were crumbling under his touch. "Patrick, please." You gasped and his hand moved from under your chin to in your hair, pulling with purpose to get closer to your neck. "Please what baby." the words came out so breathless and easy. "Tell me what you want." You gasped as he kept going and going at your neck. You felt his fingers trace outside of your underwear, rubbing over and over on your clit. He was rough and purposeful and you couldn't help but pant at his touch. He let your head fall back slightly as he moved his hand inside your underwear. He pushed quickly inside of you with his middle and ring finger whilst a finger stayed on your clit. He pushed and pulled out of you over and over, faster and faster, relentlessly. "Good girl, thats it come on." He moaned against your ear. "You want it faster?" he waited a beat for you to respond. "Good girl, such a good fucking girl." He was switching kissing between your neck and ear, hand still intangled in your hair whilst the other was working inside of you. You heard him chuckle a little. "God you're so good for me, imagine what I could do if I took my fucking time with you."
You were edging closer and closer and you could feel it inside your stomach. "Thats it." He kept saying it like it was a mantra. "no, no baby, look at me." He put his forehead against yours as he made direct eye contact with you. He kissed you again and when you shut your eyes, he would pull away. "Look at me." He demanded and smiled when you did what he said. "You've got five seconds. Cum for me." Your heartbeat was going at ten to the dozen. "Five." He started as he went faster and faster in and out of you. "Four, oh thats it good girl, you're going to do what I say." Faster and Faster. "Three, come on, you're so closeee." You could feel yourself dripping out of yourself. "Twooooo...." You were desperate, you would beg for him, you would do anything for him to count fucking faster. "One and a haaaaalf." You almost squealed that he was dragging it out longer and longer. You felt like you were going to pass out if he didn't let you come. "One. Now." You did as you were told and practically exploded on command. You never felt like this before but you were panting and exhausted and you didn't want him to stop and he didn't. He kept going, letting you finish all over his hands, all over the sofa and your underwear. Your moans were so loud, you forgot where you were and who was there, making you scream with his fingers.
You tried to control your breathing as Patrick took his fingers from you and put them in his mouth. You could barely move. You felt like your legs were shaking but you couldn't bring yourself to open your eyes. "Did you cum?" he said mockingly as you panted to yourself. "Did I beat your little record?" Your breath was uncontrollable as he sat and watched your chest heave over and over again. "I hate you." You bit your bottom lip as he watched. "No you don't." He smiled and laughed. Just on cue, Art opened the door to the room again smiling, not really noticing when Patrick slides himself away from you. "Tashi wants me to go over, do you guys mind if I bail?" Patrick looks at you as you try to regain some of your senses. "Nah, I think we should call it a night anyway, she's looking a bit fucked." You felt like your face couldn't get redder but Art was too busy thinking of Tashi to notice what Patrick actually meant. "Thanks guys." before promptly getting his bag and leaving. "Guess I didn't NEED to rush my time with you. I do think it is my turn though..." Patrick grinned.

Oh crusty 1999 Gary Oak I had to trace in Krita- how I hate thee. Let me count the ways.
His stupid fucking hand that looks so dumb I had to make a new one from scratch. Is there any reason for it to be in that position? It's technically facing the right way but looks backwards. Was he originally holding a PokeBall and they just...forgot?
Head is smaller in proportion to his body compared to Ash (and literally every other child character)
Forget Gorilla Glue- here comes Gorilla Arms. Like I know Pokemon characters have weirdly long arms and legs for ten year olds, but this is excessive- especially when lined up with every other character
Giant-ass nose (in comparison to other characters)
Tiny-ass eyes (in comparison to other characters)
There's no complaint here I just wanted to point out literally half my issues come from lack of consistency with other characters in case you didn't notice.
His smug stupid smirk that mocks me for daring to draw anything
EDIT: This 👏 bitch 👏 has 👏 no 👏 shading.
I'll overlook the ears not lining up with the eyes and how close the nose and mouth are because that's standard for this art style. But all the above shit? Nah. That's a no from me.
Maybe I could forgive this if- y'know- this was how he looked in the actual anime. But NOPE!
Tumblr media
Head is the same size as Ash's
Arms are normal length compared to body
Completely different eyebrows (?)
"Use a different art!!!!" you might say. Uh...what different art? There is none. I'm using original series art only for consistency. I started with the OS and so I need to stick with it.
Gary's only other official art is for Journeys. Side note- it's astounding that it took as long as it did for him to get an updated art, considering he's Ash's main rival. And just to make sure, I dug into Bulbapedia's guts and only found the two official arts on his page. Plus this I guess.
Tumblr media
Yep. Gary was here, and I'm really feeling like a loser.
(EDIT- Apparently I made two posts about this guy related to the trace for swap AU. Tumblr did a stupid and I thought the other one was deleted. But I needed to rant anyway.)

I just finished ISAT, and. Wow. I am in shambles after Act 5 holy FRICK
Okay, now that I’m done, time to dump all of my thoughts out at once, because I NEED to talk about this game holy crap
(spoilers abound from this point, don’t read if you are interested in playing for yourself)
(CW for discussing religion-related struggles with sexuality, if that’s something that bugs ya)
Okay, for starters, I just want to talk about how well executed this game is.
The gameplay was interesting and not too hard to understand while still being unique and fun, the illustrations and art style was really cute and charming, the character designs are recognizable yet creative, the writing is entertaining and made me love all of the characters in a very quick fashion, and the story overall was just FANTASTIC.
Literally my only complaint is that i had a tricky time adjusting to how sensitive the controls were when walking. Maybe it works better on desktop, but I was playing on the Steam Deck, and the only other platform I can play on is Mac, which this game does not support.
But honestly this ended up being a nonissue, I figured it out pretty quickly and after an hour or so I had the controls down to pat.
I also love how they handled the concept of a time loop, and the slow descent of Siffrin’s mental downfall. The way he started getting so desperate at the end, clinging to every scrap of hope he could find was heart wrenching.
Act 5 was KILLER, omg, I was so wrecked over it I had to take a break to calm down 😭
It’s not often a piece of media evokes THIS much emotion out of me, holy crud.
To talk about some of the characters,
I LOVE me some found family fluff, and boy oh boy was I fed, they’re so wholesome, they’re all so skrunkly 😭
I loved the little snippets of representation in these characters, with Odile being mixed race and attempting to connect to her roots, and Isabeau’s very trans-coded backstory. And yk, the multitude of gays and lesbians throughout the game XD
Even though that kind of representation doesn’t resonate with me personally, I still like to see it.
But oh man, Mirabelle’s cutscene in Act 3 hit hard. I myself am aroace and religious, and marriage was always something I felt was expected from me.
As I got older and realized that romantic attraction wasn’t really something I feel for people, I tried to convince myself I was attracted to a good friend of mine who had a crush on me, which obviously didn’t work out.
I’ve always had a hard time identifying with womanhood in the way my church has always portrayed it as, so having Mirabelle talk about her faith related struggle with her asexuality and identity was such a comforting representation for me.
Another thing, I can’t tell if it’s intentional or not, but I love how neurodivergent coded they are?
Like, we have Siffrin, kinda touch averse and quiet,
Odile who doesn’t like change and needs her routine alone time to recuperate after every floor,
Mirabelle and Isabeau, the funny noise appreciation squad, the hyper-empathetic duo who would always get over hyped over things together,
And while I can’t think of a specific example for them, Bonnie is always there matching Mirabelle and Isabeau’s energy.
Not to mention the frequent amount of times the latter 3 would repeat each other (echolalia) when saying something fun or happy. (Like the “Pie Smell!” candle).
Do these things on their own make them neurodivergent? No, but the way they’re consistently written like this feels very intentional and I love it.
Anyway, whoof, that was very long, but TLDR: this game was PHENOMENAL, and I will be recommending it to everyone I know

I finished re-reading Claymore a few days ago and I'm happy to say that manga held up to highschool me's memories
Coming at it from the perspective of being almost twice as old as when I first read it, and having just caught up on Berserk, I was worried. Because in middle and highschool I was easily manipulated by greatswords and pretty girls. I still am but thats besides the point. So I was thinking about the series again because Angel at Dusk reminded me of that specific brand of body horror, and I was like oh no, did that shit have any depth or was I reading a Berserk ripoff with no context. But no its good
My feeling on it is basically that it isnt, to me, a life changing sort of work. I didn't come away from it feeling the way I felt at the end of Dungeon Meshi or current Witch Hat Atelier, but the characters are all likeable, and basically every reveal, plot twist, and surprise they introduce hits sufficiently. Theres never a point where you get a close up shot of a character saying something and you dont go "oh fuck". Which is interesting since I was not impressed with the world building in the first half. Later on once they start traveling the map a bit it starts to feel more like a thought out world, but initially when theyre just going around hunting monsters its like is this whole world just several small villages with monsers in them lol
The art style progresses a lot through the series. Initially its hard to tell if its really good or kinda bad sometimes but by the end characters intended beauty is being fully conveyed. Theres one who is basically supposed to look like an angel and by the end she kinda does. I also have to give the artist credit for coming up with so many unique body horror creature designs because no two look the same for the whole run of it. And it isn't too monster of the week either but they do all have unique powers, even if some of the Claymore's abilities are stretching the internal consistency a little as time goes on. Especially by the end where one characters special move is she wiggles her head really fast and it lets her sweep her entire body like one centimeter off the ground to cut peoples legs off because its impossible to fight an enemy who is on the floor. But in the moment youre like, oh no!! The characters I like need their legs!!
And I guess lastly I really like Clare, even though shes sort of barely keeping up or not keeping up during the events of the whole thing. I say that as in, I can see why someone else could criticize some of her agency in the plot and in the final battle. Because she is often handed new techniques and powers, but she gives it her all to survive and achieve her goals despite being literally half as strong as everyone else by default, and she never feels over or underpowered. Shes often balanced by her own mental state, which usually involves being a little too impulsive despite her appearing to be a calm Vergil type. My favorite characters other than her and Stretchy Helen were probably Riful and Dauf, because of their dynamic of unimaginable horror, and shlubby husband who is invincible but very stupid, but they're so in love that you can almost forget they spend all day torturing women by stabbing them until they turn into monsters. And then they introduce the power dynamic between her and the other Abyssal Ones and you kinda start to root for her if only because she would be easier to deal with than Priscilla lol. Priscilla felt a little bit underdeveloped perhaps but i have no real complaints because she does tons of cool shit and at the end of the day thats all you can ask of a shonen antagonist

No. 5 - D2, Shrine of the Kuo-Toa (August 1978)
Author(s): Gary Gygax Artist(s): David C. Sutherland III (Cover), David A. Trampier Level range: Average of 10, preferrably party size 7+ players Theme: Underground exploration Major re-releases: D1-2 Descent into the Depths of the Earth, GDQ1-7 Queen of the Spiders
I'm almost speechless. This is the most 1e module cover to ever have 1e'd. It is perfection. The way the combat is perfectly perpendicular to the step pyramid. The bondage gear fishman who has a complete fishhead so you 100% understand he's a fishman. Lobster mommy saluting the troops. It's just….it's what dreams are made of.

So I'm already in love with this module, deeply and irrationally in love with it, before breaking the cover. If you're BORING you might prefer the later Jim Roslof cover art that's got lame things like technical proficiency. Ugh. The shit I have to put up with.
Anyway, there's a lot to talk about with D2! It's a lot of firsts for an official TSR product, and critically it's a lot of GOOD firsts.
It's the debut of the Kuo-Toa, one of the most fun groups of people in D&D! It's the first module that doesn't presume the enemy will be inherently aggressive! It's got a lot of negotiation and learning! The only good type of gnomes debuts with the Svirfneblin! This model of "alien settlement where you are not instantly attacked but you gotta learn the social rules and play along" is just the best. This will be done again in U2 and I adore U2. Yeah it's how it feels to go to a different country, especially one that doesn't speak your language, and just have everything be a little "off" compared to what you're used to, but. To me, it will always be The Autistic Experience. How well and quickly can you learn these bizarro social rules you can't intuit and what's the fewest number of whacks to the head it takes to get there? How long can you swallow your complaints when you see stuff that's obviously cruel, but the people around you don't perceive it as cruel anymore because it's The Way Things Are and they will actively defend the cruelty of it?
Ok, ok, back to your regularly scheduled program.
Gary starts off this week's festivities by telling you to be toxic to your players:
Tumblr media
Sometimes it feels like there's three Garys in a trenchcoat and they take turns writing the modules.
So D2 starts in the cave at the immediate end of D1 and, let me derail already by saying that I really, really hate old-style hex maps. I cannot follow them -- I don't mean I don't understand how you're supposed to follow them, I mean it's nearly impossible for me to follow the diagonal to the destination. Your coordinate here is R20. Here is your map. Follow the 20 axis diagonally upward and rightward until you intersect with the R row. Can you do it?
Tumblr media
Personally, I can't. My eye cannot follow that straight line, it will get lost in the mix of blank identical hexes and occasional interest objects. I sat here trying to follow it for 5 minutes and I couldn't do it. I need a straightedge to do it. The correct answer is that if you follow the light blue area from the bottom right towards the top left, it's the hex up and left of the fourth fully black hex you run into -- the leftmost of the two touching black hexes. I tested this against a few guinea pigs and no-one else could mange it either. Later we will admit defeat and that this axial coordinate system for hexmaps is, uh, really fucking bad, and replace it with offset coordinates (or even better, double coordinates) which more closely resemble normal cartesian coordinates, and by extension are not Eye Strain Central. They have the downside of different eyestrain (tiny font) and that you literally cannot fit as many hexes on the page, but the point of a graphic is to communicate information and the axial coordinate hexmap is bad at that unless you're playing on a huge table with like, two DM screens.
Yes this rant should've gone in D1, mea culpa. In my defense, D1-2 is, basically one module in two parts, they're not really separable.
Here's the coordinate lined out for you, since I imagine many of you have the same issue:
Tumblr media
So, now that I have a headache trying to read, we can get to the actual text of the adventure again. Now keep in mind that max movement rate is 1 hex per 1 inch of movement for the slowest member of the party (so like, your guy wearing platemail has 60ft of movement, 10ft to the inch: 6 hexes per day). This means you could hypothetically arrive at the final location as quickly as 22/6=4 days of gameplay, 3 if no one including hirelings wore plate. That is, if you beelined to D2 by sheer luck, never got lost, never got distracted, never got slowed down, never had to take a rest day. Which is good because the food in The Depths seems questionable.
The first segment of the adventure is mostly reprinted from D1 -- random tables and maps and the like. We do get the addition of everyone's favorite early DND trope: a slavery table! And also happilly we get some goopy guys to move your eyes away from that shit:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which, is a lot more my speed. More goopy guys. It's a roper, actually, although I frankly didn't recognize it. It looks more like the monster from Dexter's Lab? Apparently Ropers have changed a lot in the last 50 years.
So it's all random tables teasing that we're going to end up arriving at a shrine soon. There is a special entry in the back for the new Kuo-Toa and Svirfneblin, and oddly the Svirfneblin don't get a header? We don't learn much. We know that they're natural elemental summoners, that they're "natural fighters", and that they live at some unstated cave somewhere. They like their stun gas darts, they "communicate with racial empathy" (which I guess means body language?) outside their own domains, deep gnomish at home, and underworld cant when they're trading, plus earth elemental-ese. So they learn a lot as kids. They love them some traps, too, basically they're the gnomish Rambos and I love them for it.
Meanwhile, our titular Kuo-Toa get a pretty standard write-up. Driven underground, human sacrifice, raiders, like their war parties. Their priests like their mancatchers, which are based on lobster claws, they spawn in pools, they can spontaneously generate lightning by holding hands (???), are too slippery to grab, can see both infrared AND ultraviolent, can see you moving through basically any magical means, immune to poison, paralysis, charming, sleep, and are resistant to magic missile and lightning. This is, very very weird. They are wildly powerful compared to their later versions, and the only upshot is that they're readily blinded by light spells. Apparently they go insane with such regularity that they have a dedicated social role to controlling or killing the crazed? Yeah these people are a piece of work.
We get a little setpiece moment here where, essentially, there's a rogue kuo-toa who will offer you a trip across the river for 10g. He only speaks kuo-toa and he'll sicc his giant fish on you if you don't say yes fast enough. In fact, a lot of ink is spilled on this little moment, which in all likelihood will be a brief conversation and some passing of money.
Before you get into the shrine proper, some svirfneblin offer to help you in the shrine if you go halfsies on treasure (with almost that exact wordchoice).
Finally, we end up in the shrine proper, which is keyed so let us enter Keyed Mode ™️
The whole area is lit by glow-in-the-dark lichens, which is a spooky way to reveal the lobster lady idol up on the pyramid
While the party can choose to politely integrate into the crowd and play along, there's lots of little things to harass them into nonconformity. Leeches, horrifying offerings, offerings of increasing amount, having to correctly pronounce nonsense names (Blibdoolpoolp????????), holding a live lobster, it's a good bit.
You can, in fact, visit the goddess, who will give you a boon (if you give an offering) or a geas (if you don't), which also grants you kuo-toa speech and also a mark of loyalty, which is neat. You can also encounter her if you fuck around in the prince's treasure room, so the odds of meeting her are actually pretty good! Note that this is pre-"Kuo-Toa believe their gods into existence" so in this case they are worshipping a (hypothetically) permanent, naturally-occurring deity. Being that this is 1e and she is a she, she is Extremely Naked. She is later called The Mother of Lusts, which is one hell of a title.
If you fail to get the priest-prince when you meet him, he actually has a pretty rock-solid escape plan and will come back with an army. So, probably whack him if possible. I really like when antagonists have the sense to piss off and come back armed, rather than pridefully stand and die. You get the sense that Va-Guulgh is priest-prince because he plans contingencies like this, whereas other Kuo-Toa simply vibe. That being said, the Kuo-Toa are apparently not equipped for a search, so it's pretty easy to ditch them.
Tumblr media
Sigh.
We do not have a dramatic declaration of THE END anymore, which is a terrible shame. We instead get a more reasonable "This is the end of the section."
The magic of D2 is more in the play and less in the overview. Like, look at this map:
Tumblr media
This is a pretty naturalistic map. This is just how you'd arrange a major structure, rather than the kind of nonsense layouts you see in a lot of early dungeons. I don't put much stock in "Gygaxian Naturalism", I think Gary presented pretty intensely game-y spaces and they only seemed naturalistic by 1970s published product standards, but nonetheless he was paving the way compared to some of the silliness you got in pre-G1 modules. This map is good, I think, in that it becomes super extremely obvious to the players from the moment you enter that they extremely do not want to provoke a full alarm -- this is a shrine where you want to kill as few Kuo-Toa as you can, and as many of those as you can behind closed-doors -- it's time to straight up bail if the alarm goes off because you are not beating the hundreds of guys here if you you provoke them up front.
We end with some rust monster art, my favorite monster that I never use because I think I'd get shanked if I did. See you next time in D3!

12 favourite things about Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
So I saw the Beetlejuice sequel over the weekend. I saw the original in the theatre nearly 40 years ago. And I admit was a bit nervous about whether the film would live up to the original, or would it be derailed by so many of the things that have caused remakes or continuations of legacy properties to fail in recent years. (Those factors vary from person to person but often boil down to either failing to recapture lightning in a bottle, or going against the spirit of the original in some way.)
I'll put in a spoiler break before I pass along my favourite things about the film, but the tl;dr is I had a blast, and I should never have doubted Tim Burton.
The following includes not only plot spoilers for B2, I also have to mention a major spoiler for the Wednesday series, so you are warned.
Favourite things about B2:
Jenna Ortega
Michael Keaton has managed the near impossible - reprising a role from decades ago without losing anything. It makes me sad that we'll never see his proper return as Batman in the now-lost Batgirl movie. I won't name specific names, but with only a couple of exceptions (most of them in Deadpool and Wolverine), so many times an actor reprising a role from years past has either failed to recapture the magic or does a good job but is still missing something that makes their reprise feel lesser in some way. You could splice together scenes of Keaton from B2 with scenes from B1 and you would be hard-pressed to tell the difference.
Jenna Ortega
Winona Ryder is terrific as the older Lydia. I loved the fact they made her a "paranormal-reality" TV star; I figured Lydia would have grown up to be either that or a goth-rock singer. I am not in favour of always darkening characters when they return after a while, but I think the idea of Lydia being haunted (literally) by her past and seeing dead people was well handled and does put a bit of a dark spin on the happy ending of B1. But in a way that works.
Jenna Ortega
For reasons best left to a google search, Jeffrey Jones was unable to appear in B2. His absence was well-handled by way of photographs, having his character lose his head, and a very clever and unexpected stop-motion sequence that at times looked like it was one of those wild AI-generated shorts.
Jenna Ortega
The change of style - the stop-motion, and the Italian art film pastiche that served as Beetlejuice's origin story - were a couple places where the film distinguished itself from the original. Same with Beetlejuice pulling a Deadpool a couple of times and talking to the audience.
Jenna Ortega. OK, seriously, she's a lot of fun in this and is a highlight of the film. My only complaint is they're not completely successful in separating her from Wednesday, both when she gets involved in a Beetlejuice-driven dance sequence, and a subplot where her character falls in love with a boy who turns out to be a villain - which is identical to what happens in Wednesday; the actors even look similar (there is the big Wednesday spoiler I warned about). That's one of the only major criticisms I have with B2, made a bit more glaring as Burton produced Wednesday and I think the film and show used the same writers. Jenna is in danger of being typecast which I'm sure she wants to avoid. I hope her star just continues to rise.
Bob. 'Nuff said.
Burn Gorman of Torchwood fame makes an unexpected appearance in the film as a preacher. He's quite funny to watch in his few scenes. He's become quite a good character actor over the years.
The Disney joke. Aside from the fact I know it'll play well with the many who have been turned off the House of Mouse for various reasons (including their treatment of various franchises and the never-ending Snow White saga), it has a different meaning when you realize that reportedly Burton had a bad experience making the live-action Dumbo for them, so this wasn't just a topical dig at Disney (like we saw in Deadpool) - this one was personal. When film scholars of the future write their books examining Burton's films and he and everyone else involved in his movies have collected their copies of the Handbook, the joke will probably get covered in quite a bit of detail, even though it comes and goes so quickly on screen.
One criticism I have is that Monica Bellucci's character doesn't really do too much. Reportedly Burton and Bellucci began dating while making the film so at least those two got something out of it. But her end was a bit overwhelming. I also felt Willem Defoe's character was underused. But if someone decided to do a spinoff of his actor-turned-underworld cop character, I think it could do well. I know both Bellucci and Defoe were playing plot maguffins - their purpose was to push things along to get to the Beetlejuice/Lydia reunion. But there could have been more. (I also didn't care for the fact no one thanked Beetlejuice for saving the lives (and souls) of Jenna's character by dealing with the boyfriend and everyone else by helping dispose of Monica. That's the only part of the film I disliked, but a minor point.)
Is B2 better than B1. I would say no, but it is an excellent film. I don't know if a third movie is justified, but the prospect of releasing a film called Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice may be too much temptation to ignore.

Ahsoka "The Jedi, The Witch, and The Warlord" Liveblog
Woo boy, there were certainly some Choices in this.
Yeah yeah, I'm late and spoilered to hell I know, look, I have been Going Through It out in realspace and my priority has been finishing Whumptober fics, cut me some slack.
Anyway.
Lars Mikkelson continuing to crush it as Thrawn.
"Even I fell victim to the... heroics of a single Jedi." Looooooool another bit for my collection of Pissy!Thrawn moments.
We're not going to get an explanation for why the Nightsisters and Thrawn are so tight, are we?
Morgan looks a little bit trepidacious about all of this ha ha.
All right, a point in this show's favor, this look at Nightsister rituals and culture is interesting.
And the flaming sword is cool, I'll admit.
Ngl, the editing really needs to be tightened up in this scene, we really only needed the one or two establishing shots before cutting into the interior.
Eman continues to be the perfect Ezra. I love him. 10/10 no complaints.
Ngl, this is sweet on the surface that Ezra's new saber has pieces of Kanan's buuuuuuuut *waves Green Saber Ezra Supremacy flag*.
Sabine, let him borrow y'all's lightsaber and YOU build a new one.
Ah goody, an Exposition Reveal.
-_-
This... doesn't actually explain Baylan's "Your family is dead because your Master didn't trust you." line btw. JUST SAYING.
I don't even know what the narrative wants anymore re. Sabine's choice to gamble Thrawn's return for Ezra.
Aaaand please not to be reminding me of the Wrong Jedi arc kthnx.
Oh good an action scene.
Ezra and Ahsoka being cool Jedi together, nice. Could be more emphasized and staged even more coolly tho.
Well poop, I guess that's the reason why we had to risk stowing away on Thrawn's ship.
Oh good! This holomap thing is exactly the kind of plot device I actually needed for one of my Sabezra Week fills.
Lol Thrawn be taking NO chances lololol.
Oh hello finally some of Thrawn's theme in the score here. Thrawn using the men's loyalty and fanaticism towards him personally to achieve his goals, fits the culty vibes, sure.
I am liiiiiviiiiiiiiiiiing for the subtle nervousness in Ezra's voice when talking about Thrawn finding the Dathomir castle and waking the witches. PLEASE CAN I HAVE A THOUSAND WHUMP AND ANGST FICS ABOUT THE IN-BETWEEN BEFORE EZRA'S ESCAPE FROM THE CHIMAERA?
His arms are so comfortably around Sabine awwwwww.
Thrawn be all srs bznss and I'm loving it.
Yeah no, Jedi!Sabine is REJECTED, she did not have any kind of necessary mental or emotional breakthrough, she wasn't shown calming her mind properly, sorry Dave THE LEGWORK AIN'T THERE, Imma fix this to be Ahsoka in the inevitable rewrite/fixfic that I've apparently decided I'm doing.
Oh Ahsoka is helping too, well I'm still not having Sabine be able to do it.
HAAAAAAAAAA THAT PISSED LOOK OF THRAWN'S OH MAN THE SNARLING LIP CURL, THE RAGE, YES PLEASE MORE.
The struggle to recompose himself OH MAN.
This is peak Mirrorverse!Thrawn and I'm here for it. I love seeing my headcanons playing out onscreen.
Aaaaaand this would have been the perfect scene to have Ezra and Sabine sharing the Our Lightsaber, meanwhile Sabine should be fully kitted out Mando style.
*simmers*
STAGE THIS DIFFERENTLY SO THAT SABINE'S BESKAR IS NOT CONSTANTLY LITERAL PLOT ARMOR PLEASE.
Aahhhhhhh Ezra my love! <3
Should have either let him use the Our Lightsaber or continued with the Force martial arts though, pick a lane. Or have a conversation about why they need to actually get him another saber.
Eman is... waaaaaaay better at this than Rosario, sad to say, lol.
Look at him GO THERE'S MY BOY.
I love him.
Oh what are we doing now?
Ohhhhh the zombie!troopers!
Lol Ezra must have left before the Nightsisters could show Thrawn their zombie techniques.
Eman makes this look flawless, I am in love.
Battle Couple Sabezra moment, awww.
"I missed you."
FAKSJHFAKJFHHKKHHHFHFH OKAY DEAD.
DEAD AND DECEASED.
LIKE THE ZOMBIES LOL.
Aaaaaaaaand I'm gonna adjust this in the fixfic, because right now it looks like they were waiting to actually dock.
And my typing is being slowed down hang on a second.
Still dumb.
Okay back.
Thrawn basically telling Morgan, "Right, so you're going to have to go fight the Rebels and stall die for me, mmkay?"
She's looking like she might regret all of this now lolol.
I do like how the finale is making it very very easy for me to fix later lol.
Like here. Morgan should have attempted to stop Ezra and Sabine. Just a small attempt, and then blocked by Ahsoka, and Ezra and Sabine run around and outmaneuver them.
BATTLE COUPLE SABEZRA. :D
Aaaaand final trailer shot accounted for.
Okay, can there be a little more effort on the choreography there please?
Oh no Sabine, EZRA SAVE HER.
Or we could retcon Sabine into actually legitimately being Force Sensitive and have her pull the Our Lightsaber.
SIIIIIIIIGHHHHHHH.
*grumbles, takes down notes about how to fix this in my rewrite*
Oh come on Ezra, you can jump that.
Catch me melting at the sheer and utter trust Ezra has in Sabine's abilities.
(But also, screw this, she's getting a jetpack in the rewrite.)
Aaaaaaaaaand I do hate that they got separated again, screwing alllllll of that.
Nice of the troopers to just politely stop shooting.
Yeah so, this is basically gonna be a 1 v 100 for Ahsoka when I rewrite it, let my girl have a hard fought climactic battle, she can take it.
"Your friends are dead." Uhhhh nah they ain't what does this bit of dialogue even connect to?
Lol Ezra gets to put on the big boy stormtrooper armor.
The vaaaaaaaaaguely panicky twitches that Thrawn has here. A+, excellent, no notes.
No kill like overkill LOLOLOL.
Thrawn, internally: Shitshitshitshitshitshitshiiiiiiiiiiiiit.
Ah Thrawn is going to try Break Them By Talking. Ezra tanked this let's see if Ahsoka can do the same.
Nope, she's Affected.
Aaaaaand he out.
Bye Thrawn!
Hmmmmgh, yeah no, because in my rewrite I'm axing the entirety of Sabine actually becoming a Jedi it's going to be better that she goes with Ezra on the Eye of Sion instead of stays with Ahsoka, if she stayed a Jedi then yes that's what the conclusion should have been that makes narrative sense now that I see it.
But also again, I Do Not Like That Plot Point so--*grumblegrumble mumble*
Hi Morai!
Bandit queen Shin? I could dig it.
Baylan chilling with Mortis god statues.
I STILL DO NOT SEE ANY SOLID EVIDENCE THEY'RE GONNA DO ABELOTH GUYS, SORRY.
And Thrawn is setting up base on Dathomir. Lol wait til he finds out that there's basically nothing there anymore lololol.
Those uh... those be a lotta dead troopers. Probably most of the Chimaera crew.
...Cripes did they die naturally, did Ezra kill them, or did Thrawn pull some kind of Jonestown thing in order to enact his eventual revenge?
Oh maaaaan what if it's that last one, that would fit with the cult-like chanting in his intro omgghghhhggkajsfkjh.
Frick man, Thrawn fixing to unleash an undead army on the GFFA that can really only be taken out by lightsabers.
Oh come on, you're telling me Ezra was on the Eye and didn't pull some last minute shenanigans before he left?
Didn't screw Thrawn over one last time for nostalgia's sake?
(He and Sabine are blowing up some engines before they skedaddle, in the fixfic.)
HERA AND EZRA SHOULD HAVE BEEN ALLOWED A HUG, FILONI.
The attempt at bookends here is cute but no. LET HERA HUG HER SON.
THIS DOESN'T EVEN REALLY WORK AS A BOOKEND.
YES THE PART WHERE CHOPPER RECOGNIZES HIM IS CUTE BUT THIS IS WASTED DRAMA. THERE'S NO REASON FOR THIS.
LET HERA HUG HER SOOOOOOONNNN.
This whole scene just doesn't work because we're trying to shoehorn it into being a bookend for the opening, it doesn't wooooooooooorrrrrk.
THEY SHOULD HAVE HUGGED.
*furiously taking down notes on how to rewrite this scene*
*grumbling*
Blah blah Sabine can feel Anakin there but Ahsoka can't? blah blah blah.
Aaaaaaand closing us out with "As The Sun Sails And The Moon Walks"
Well.
Where do I begin?
Okay so... final verdict... I DO actually like this show.
THAT BEING SAID.
There was soooooooo much about the execution and so many of the narrative choices that I just NEEDED to be better and it frustrates me. Because this show by all rights should have been a spectacular emotional thrill ride like Kenobi and it just wasn't.
A lot of the problems and nitpicks I had with Kenobi are exacerbated here, especially under Filoni's brand of, "I didn't care for what Lucas did with the Prequels, here let me fix it." NO FILONI IT DIDN'T NEED FIXING IT WAS FINE! HOW THE FORCE WORKED WAS FINE! THE JEDI WERE FINE!
But there's such GOOD STUFF in here that I can't discount it all fully like I can with the Sequel Trilogy. (Which, believe me, I have attempted to workshop and fixfic but ultimately gave up on.) The purrgil lore! The Ancient Dathomiri! Another galaxy! Whatever Baylan was up to! Sabezra being adorable! Thrawn!
Soooooo yeah, basically join me sometime in the future for when I inevitably create a fixfic AU for this show like I did for Aldnoah.Zero because unfortunately I can't give up on this show I need to fix it, just hand me the characters and story and I can fix it.
Can't do much for the camerawork, choreography, and occasional stiff acting (Not you Eman, Natasha, Ray, Evan, and Lars, you're all great.) but I can at least salvage that part lol.
Ultimately... mid. Excellent premise and cool concepts brought down by subpar execution and some frankly baffling narrative decisions. But gimme like a week and I will workshop a Fanon AU that I can be completely happy with.
Hopefully we get a Season Two? Maybe? Or resolve everything in the Mandoverse movie?
Peace out, y'all.

Note
I am just nosy, forgive me. Can you describe each one of your mutuals?
Buckle up people and prepare to get complimented >:3c
First and foremost, they’re all absolute sweethearts to me.
There are my irl friends, such as @wretchedshade, @granolabird, @siriuscitrus and @scales-of-stardust or beta as I usually refer to them. I share the same braincell with these people.
Wretchedshade has been my best friend since we were ten, we’ve been there for each other for 11 years. I initially got her into anime, and then she got me into jojo, and every once in a while we cry about Doukyuusei again. She’s a great artist and is really good at writing sad shit, which is why I write sad shit; to have the glory of finally making her cry. She kicked cancer’s teeth in a few months ago so it’s about goddamn time something good come her way and I WILL fight someone on that.
Granolabird is the dm for my dnd campaign, and like I said, absolute sweetheart, chaotic adhd haver (actually like most of my friend group is like this lmao we’re all queer and neurodivergent). Either way, we used to share thoughts on each other’s original stories, and we still do sometimes but it’s mostly just sending each other tiktoks/reels like “this you” or “this your oc.”
Siriuscitrus is usually pretty hyper, but also tries to be v considerate of everyone’s feelings. If you said that the McDonald’s employee put pickles on your burger when you said no, they’d probably be the one to tell them. They’re also scarily good at vibechecking people and told me I give “future he/they vibes” and like a week later I said “fuck you’re right oh my god.”
You’ve probably seen me and beta’s interactions on here or in the ao3 comments. We enjoy our like playful rivalry/enemyship. I like to torment tease her and she usually gets me back pretty good, it’s all in good fun. It’s also really funny to me whenever we meet up, I tell myself “you are friends with them for reasons other than fic so do not make it about fic” and then we’ll spend literally hours talking about and brainstorming fic ideas. It just Happens.
I’m also gonna add @memory-mortis into here because while we’ve not met irl I’ve introduced him to my friend group. Yet another sweetheart, love her art style a lot, and she was one of the first comments I got on ginkgo trees to motivate me to keep going. I was kinda worried about bringing him into my friendgroup because like if I’m not overthinking I am not thinking At All. I was super relieved and happy that she like IMMEDIATELY fit in with everyone so :D
For some of my other close but only on tumblr/ao3/outside my general friendgroup mutuals! (There are too many so I’m sorry if you’re not here it’s mostly people I interact with more regularly ;-;)
@crimson-ashes who I have occasionally with absolute love called my “askbox gremlin” because they live in my inbox. I need to stress this is affectionate because genuinely, I love opening tumblr and seeing I’ve got asks from them. They gotta stop posting Astarion though because I’m feeling So Tempted to play BG but I know my laptop would kill itself (joking).
@crystalflygeo and I know I’ve called everyone sweethearts but genuinely, she’s probably one of the sweetest people I’ve had the pleasure of talking to. She’s really wholesome (unlike her writing which is never gonna be a complaint in my book, good soup) and super supportive of other people.
@madamemachikonew who’s super polite and really kind. She’s also really creative/smart when it comes to referencing real world art and philosophy in her writing and integrating it into her own worldbuilding. I would have never thought to have done that, and it makes her writing very unique!
We don’t interact as much but @probably-doesnt-exist, @ethve, @euniveve and @ainescribe are such talented artists and super sweet, have literally made me screech and cackle with utter joy whenever they draw the characters from ginkgo trees. I rotate through which art becomes my phone’s lock/home screens.
This is long af but fuck it, I wanna brighten people’s days and I told myself to say “I love you” to my friends and family more, so consider this one big “I love you!” to y’all. It’s a pleasure talking to y’all!

As I do sometimes have complaints about DC fandom, I think it’s only fair to have a post focusing on the positives, so here are some things I really love and enjoy:
I've read so many characters I would have taken a lot longer to find! Vic Sage, Mia Dearden, and Rose Wilson, for example, and I'm about to read some Kate Kane and Roy Harper
People bringing their own experiences to the characters! Gifting a character with a funny story from childhood, sharing sports teams and video games, or nationalities and neurodivergency, or personal experiences like grief. I think it’s so wonderful to see how people’s varied life experiences change how they interact and understand different characters.
Those web-weaving posts with quotes and art all relating to a character or theme are beautiful
People posting fun/sad/interesting panels with the issue number cited….thank you
Character. Essays.
I can read two completely conflicting takes on a character and both are well-argued, well-sourced, and intriguing, and I’ll come away from both with a deeper and more nuanced take on the character.
Reading lists!!!!! I would not survive without these, I absolutely love them and appreciate people who take the time to write them.
I really like looks at the production of comics, the editorial powerplays, and the comparisons of different writers. Canon not being taken as unchangeable or infallible is really nice. It’s especially important when discussing literally any character who isn’t a white man.
I like that, because of the many timelines and series, there’s no answer to what any character, relationship, or place really is. How different people choose to analyse the comics, prioritise different versions, and synthesise a final interpretation becomes a personal and creative process. It’s really lovely to see the range of opinions and how meaningful they are to people.
Sapphic shippers u mean the world to me.  ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
I love the fanart! Everyone has such cool ideas for hairstyles and clothing and unique drawing styles to express it in.
I especially love art which has more symbolic or narrative elements - I see Duke with the sun and I lose my mind
Anyone who takes their fan appreciation into another medium, like baking or fibre arts or Lego, blows my mind
Disability being part of characters to be accepted rather than seen as a weakness. Whether that’s canon disabilities which get magically cured or retconned out, disability coding which isn’t fully explored, or injuries which should have been disabling and weren’t. (Losing a spleen might have a little impact, DC)
People’s takes on how two characters who haven’t interacted in canon or have only interacted a little would get along. Bonus points if this is presented as an idea for a comic crossover.

Feanix Reads Dragon Age Comics
#1: The Silent Grove
I'll be posting my thoughts on each series as a whole, rather then individual issues. Below the cut are all the thoughts I had while reading The Silent Grove.
WARNING: It does get a bit Alistair critical, as I feel like this series really brought out the worst in his character, which in turn brought out the worst in me.
Anyway, here they are, my thoughts:
The Silent Grove (I)
So, first thing's first, it's strange seeing young Varric here. It's a bit surprising how quickly I've gotten used to silver fox Varric in The Veilguard promotional materials, with the longer hair and a bit of beard growth. Younger, cleanshaven Varric just looks weird to me now. The art style also doesn't help. I'm pretty sure the art style was one of the things that turned me off the first time I tried to read them when they first came out.
I'll admit, as far as protagonists go, King Alistair wasn't a huge draw for me, and even when the comics were first releasing, I don't think I actually read them until after the final issue of Until We Sleep had been released. I was always more of a Morrigan boy, and even in the first game, there were times when Alistair grated on me. We'll return to that point later.
Now, Isabela on the other hand? Yeah, she's the reason I even started reading these comics. I do love my captain.
I'd forgotten that Zevran is mentioned by name in this story. Apparently he was meant to be in the comic in Varric's place, but was "cut due to concerns about party dynamics", which to me sounds like a skill issue. Zevran has a pre-existing relationship with both Alistair and Isabela, and it's well-established that Varric doesn't like going out (to the point that the entire party will roast him for it in Trespasser no matter who you have with you).
This is baseless speculation on my part, but I feel like they went with Varric because Varric is probably more popular than Zevran.
The Silent Grove (II)
Okay, I'd like to lodge a complaint: Isabela deserved a new outfit. Varric and Alistair both got spiffy new outfits. Isabella doesn't even get pants. And it's meant to be freezing cold. We open with a guard complaining about how cold it is (cold enough that we can see his breath). Then we cut to Isabela climbing out of the sea. Does she not feel the cold?
She obviously feels the cold; later in this very same issue we see Alistair putting his cloak on her. Why didn't Isabela get an outfit upgrade again? (Don't answer that, we all know why.)
I feel like Varric literally questioning what he's doing there proves my point; maybe it's fitting with his luck that he gets dragged into this sort of thing, but his role just as easily could have been filled by Zevran. Of course, that being said, I do enjoy it when he narrates his circumstances out loud. It's a fun character quirk.
Tumblr media
I appreciate that we see a Vashoth (or possibly even Tal Vashoth) as a member of the Crows; it emphasises that the Crows really do take anyone into their number. A pity that all the others basically look like human men. Not elf or dwarf in sight, and no women.
I wonder if the intention was for the reader to believe the prisoner was Maric. He says it's too late, and Alistair's narration says that his quest has failed, but I'm trying to imagine reading this for the first time without having spoiled everything for myself. I feel like I would assume that the man Alistair finds is Maric.
The Silent Grove (III)
First shot of Yavana, flashback, from behind. No pants. Pretty sure she is only the second named female character in this series so far, and neither of them have been drawn with pants. I can literally see Yavana's butt cheeks. Ugh.
Lack of pants aside, she does have a really cool design, though.
This part felt like a lot of exposition, some pretty scenery, and Alistair saying that high dragons are worse than darkspawn. Really, Alistair? You fought during the Blight, and you think that high dragons are worse than darkspawn?
"In my life so far, I've taken the sword to three dragons. The big ones, I mean – not the ones that look like scaly, tooth dogs and love horse meat, but the high dragons that make the earth shake. Not even darkspawn are that savage. A dragon feed on anything. A dragon exists only to kill."
This reminds me way too much of Iron Bull's speech about dragons.
"Dragons are the embodiment of raw power. But it's all uncontrolled, savage… So they need to be destroyed."
Ugh. At least right after Alistair gives that speech in his narration, the dragon literally chooses not to kill him. He never gives any indication that he learns from his interactions with the dragon, though – at least, not that I remember. Maybe the next two issues will prove me wrong.
Anyway, we will come back to this later as well.
The Silent Grove (IV)
I love Yavana. No surprise, right? She's Morrigan's sister, and she's written almost like a mix of Morrigan and Flemeth. I do wish we could have gotten to know her more.
"In destroying what it does not understand, mankind would destroy itself."
But gosh, I really dislike the way Alistair is written… well, I was going to say here, but the truth is everything about his interactions with the dragon and Yavana makes him come across as narrow-minded and really unlikeable to me.
"Meaning you don't understand either, but it's what your mother told you."
Yeah, we'll come back to that later.
Claudio is… eh. He's a bit player. His connection to Isabela's past makes for some interesting plot developments, and he's obviously tied to the larger story involving Maric – though, as above, I'm not sure if I would have made that assumption if I hadn't been already spoiled the first time I read this. I probably would have assumed he was just planning on ransoming Alistair back to Ferelden or something. Or, heck, putting him in that prison like Maric was.
I appreciate Isabela deciding on the spot that she's not going to abandon Alistair. She's grown a lot from the women she was at the start of Dragon Age II.
The Silent Grove (V)
Isabela marching back into the Silent Grove and yelling Yavana's name is very funny to me.
I'd completely forgotten about Isabela and Varric making a deal with Yavana. That makes me even more annoyed about the ending of this arc. But we'll come back to that later.
"You wanted me alive. Now you have to try to keep me."
Okay, I'll admit, that's a good line. Some of that charming, funny Alistair shining through. A shame there's so little of him in these comics.
I do wish slut shaming Isabela wasn't something that the writer felt the need to carry over from the game. Even with Claudio being a bad guy, it comes across as really distasteful considering they've designed her character to show as much skin as possible.
Badass final page with Yavana standing over Claudio's body and talking about how getting the truth even with him being dead.
The Silent Grove (VI)
"You almost missed the fun. Evidently we're going to ask Claudio how it feels to be stabbed in the chest."
Oh Isabela, how I love thee.
Yavana's idea of a séance involves a lot more pyrotechnics than one might expect, but it is quite exciting. I am curious if she burned his corpse, or if it was some magic of Titus's to try to keep his name out of Claudio's mouth?
Yavana's explanation of the Hall of Sleepers, and what Maric's deal was, really convinces me that Alistair was wrong and that she does understand what she's talking about. In the same way that Morrigan prioritised sparing Urthemiel's soul from death even after Flemeth is killed. I don't think either one of them (certainly not Morrigan) does what they do simply because their mother told them to.
Which brings us to possibly my least favourite part of this entire eighteen issue series.
Tumblr media
Fuck you, Chantry Boy.
It's later, so here we are. I hate this moment. It makes me hate Alistair, for doing exactly what Yavana says mankind has always done and killing what he doesn't understand. And yes, he says he does it because he blames her for everything that happened in Ferelden after Maric left, but here's the thing: Yavana didn't make the fucking deal with Maric! Flemeth did!
And the thing is, two issues ago he accused her of simply parroting what Flemeth told her. He accused her of not understanding what she was doing. Which is it, Alistair? Is she another pawn of Flemeth's, or is she the wicked witch who took your daddy away?
Except she didn't take him away, Maric made that choice on his own. He made a deal so that he would be able to save his country, and then he held up his end of the bargain by travelling to Yavana.
Uggghhh!
Issues ends with Alistair bemoaning his own status as a pawn and saying he's going to kill Titus.
And then his final narrative just feels so shoehorned because it's close to the kind of humour we're used to getting from Alistair in the game, but this isn't that Alistair.
"My name is Alistair Theirin, and I'm king of Ferelden. Long live the king, long may he reign! And so forth. Pray to the Maker he doesn't do something stupid…"
You just did! Seriously, fuck you, Chantry Boy.
Final Thoughts
Oof. It had some okay moments, but to be honest, the best part of this comic for me was Yavana and, well… Yeah.
The thing is, I don't feel like I'm familiar enough with Alistair's character to say whether or not he's acting out of character. Is all of this something that a hardened King Alistair would do? Or is it the writing emphasising all the worst parts of him without balancing it with what made Alistair so popular?
Anyway, not a great start to the re-read. I really hope I have more fun with Those Who Speak and Until We Sleep, but I'm done for the night.

Hello, sorry for bothering you, but based on your most recent reblogs I take it you've seen the Spider-Man: Across The Spiderverse and I was just wondering what you thought about it?
I have never watched the first film, but I've heard a lot of praise about it and now with the sequel and the sequel's own positive reception I'm wondering whether I should watch these films
Yeah, again sorry about bothering you, have a nice day
*inhales*
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
Now, that aside
It's an AMAZING film. Now, I'm biased cuz I'm literally a video game artist so I know how challenging and unique all the little bits and bobs of making the movie were, which makes me love it more. The animation is so unique and stylized without detracting from the experience, and the post processing filters they use really make it look like a comic book.
The first film is phenomenal. Like, literally groundbreaking. The story, music, art style, and animation are all perfect. It's literally just the best. It also came out when I was a freshman animation student, so I got to sit in on a lecture from an alumni who actually worked on the film! We got to see all the behind the scenes things and ask tons of questions. It was so cool.
Now for the second film.
Oh my god. Oh. My. God.
The music; amazing. The character; amazing. The story; amazing. It has so much heart to it and you can tell the creators really put their hearts and souls into it and truly cared about the story they were telling. I'd say my only complaint were some eyestrain moments, but that's part of the style/narrative.
But in all seriousness, please watch it. They're amazing movies and deserve all the love and praise

Since you've mentioned the Halloween merch is your favorite, what were your thoughts on this year's drop?
I think it's an improvement in a lot of important ways from some previous years. There's a much more distinctive Halloween theme that is also varied. Rather than like 15 chibi witches, we got different costumes for different characters. My only complaint is that there weren't enough pins. They seem to be releasing less and less pins as time goes on and that's not over all terrible. But I think having basically only one line of designs for pins is restricting. Especially with the pins they released this year. A LOT of people did not vibe with those pins and having a second style of designs for those who are very put off by the ones we got would have allowed for options and seen more people buy pins. But they seem to want to push the acrylics, possibly because they're easier to make.
Tumblr media
(this scares me)
I'm only speculating but they may not be selling as many pins as they used to and think they aren't wanted. But I don't think that's why there could be a dip in pin sales. I think the real reason would be that in the last year or two, the designs have gotten progressively worse in general for the big seasonal drops. And I think this is because they keep giving the main pin line (usually pin ups) to 2d artists with little to no experience designing pins because they've worked on the show a long time. Artists whose print or acrylic work is great, but who don't know how to design for an enamel medium. This results in subpar pin designs that people don't care for.
Poor color selection, bad anatomy, and other problems that a person who designs pins regularly can better account for deter some buyers. Give the Apology Tour pin Still Waiting a look. It was designed by the popular fanmerch creator AmericanVvitchcraft. It's beautiful. And the spinning element works wonderfully unlike the spinning elements on literally any of the other spinning pins they've released. It's an amazing pin because it was designed by an experienced pin designer.
Tumblr media
Then look at the recent summer pins. The colors translated awfully in person from the mock up art. There's a pin up where Millie's feet are being eaten by her ass. They just disappear into her ass. The pin ups especially have just gotten worse over time because they aren't being done by pin designers.
Tumblr media
Frankly, hire more fanmerch makers and you won't have to reduce the amount of pins you make because people eat up fanpins made by experienced fanmerch makers. They scramble over one another, sacrifice sleep and their sanity, to get them when they have limited and complicated drops. I see firsthand everyday the insane level of pin lust in this fandom's collector community. People do not want less pins.
So, that's a long way to say my one complaint is the lack of pin options. Everything else was great and I hope they keep moving in the direction of creating fun and unique designs instead of the formulaic stuff I've been complaining about for at least two years.
