In 1962, George Harrison sent a 3-page letter to a fan named Susan, thanking her for sending gifts to his family and the rest of the letter was a set of instructions on how to wash a car and dump dirty water on Paul's car. Transcription: 42 BRODIE AVE. MOSSLEY HILL LIVERPOOL 18 Dear Susan, I hope you had a good chrimbo, and have a happy nuclear too. Thank you for giving my mum flowers and chocs. [ it was you wasn't it] Thanks also for the card, in fact THANKS A HEAP SUSAN. "Your too kind". Instructions for washing car: - 1. Use plenty of soapy clean water, preferably warm. 2. When car is [though it may take a lot of water] - clean, leave to dry off for about 20 minutes. [ You can have a cup of tea now]. 3. Now ask mother to find some dusters [2 each] and with the polish, apply with No. 1 duster over an area of about 1 sq foot at a time, in a circular motion. Dont leave it too long before polishing off. This should carried out until the car is spotless, and gleaming clean. [Dont forget the wheels!] 4. Take 1 brush or vacuum cleaner, and have a bash at the carpets. They too can be made to look like new. 5. The Windows [interior] should be polished new, after which you can retire for another tea. 6. Before returning home, i suggest you look over the car again, for any parts you may have missed out, on finding, they should be cleaned accordingly. 7. Now proceed to 20 Forthlin RD. with about 6 buckets full of dirty muddy greasy water, where a shiny ford Classic will be seen. Spread contents of the buckets evenly, so as to leave a nice film of muck over the car. You can now return home knowing you have done your deed for the day. Thank you!!! Proceedings should be carried out about the 8th of January, Thanks again for the card cheerio for now dont forget Ban the Bog love from George [Harrison] xxxxxx

the fact that irving canonically survives through the end of asunder to be at wynne's funeral is so fucking funny to me. nothing but love and respect for MY unstoppable cockroach morally grey machiavellian mage dad!!! he's survived in his position through multiple attempted rites of annulment and blood mage plots popping up left right and center around him. the chantry keeps trying to stamp him out but his dodge game is simply out of this world, divine. civil wars, political machinations and minefields, chantry atrocities, this wily old motherfucker is dodging and weaving his way through it all, not-quite-no-hits-taken-running-it-but-honestly-close-enough-under-the-circumstances style. if solas does succeed in tearing down the veil I would fully believe that one of the like three people still alive at the end of it all would be a very weary 90 year old first enchanter irving going 'oh this shit again huh'. the maker has cursed him for his hubris and his paperwork is never finished (affectionate, it's fine he canonically loves paperwork)
#we should have had the option to leave him in the fade instead of hawke or a warden#he would've just annoyedly shuffled his way back out of there a week later#dragon age#dragon age origins#first enchanter irving#he must be SO annoying to the chantry because it's heavily implied he's made his playground#out of tirelessly finding technicalities and loopholes to exploit that they can't *quite* call him on without domino effects going off#I think first enchanter in the circle system at origins times is a position that invariably and inevitably leaves you morally compromised#but I feel he really does his best within the rules he's given to play with and personally i love him a bit for that. and also#for being an unkillable lil shit. insufferable. inconquerable in his 'I'm about to be such an annoyance to you' impish spirit.#the I'm going to suffer but guess what. so are you of it all. traumatize the chantry back#I just imagine sophia sending letters home right before the vote for independence like '...dad I am hearing some INSANE rumours out here#what the actual fuck is going on back home???'#and he's like 'nothing that you need to worry about sweetie just keep living your best life and have fun killing darkspawn <3'#(there's something that makes me feel So much about how consistently his stance is like... 'you'll always be welcome here#but the circle doesn't *need* you; go be a warden and live your life'. he managed to fineagle freedom for you somehow and won't let you#turn and glance back. not even once. I feel somehow both so abandoned and so incredibly loved it's wild)#oc: sophia amell

Nya headcanon:
Nya has kept every bit of fanart/fanmail that people have given her. Little kids running up to her and telling her about how big of an inspiration she is to them is her biggest weakness.

If you liked Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries, try A Letter to the Luminous Deep
They both include:
scholarly characters studying magical worlds
stories told in epistolary form
romance between characters with lots of personality

My full analysis of the Empty House isn't coming quite yet, but I wanted to do something that would... bridge the gap, so to speak.
For one, I tend to avoid The Final Problem sometimes, as it will make me cry(I am a sap, truly), but there is always a part of me that will genuinely appreciate the Empty House.
Let me talk a little about Holmes’s return.
For 1893 England, Holmes’s death was... well, basically one of the single biggest moments in fandom culture since the Pickwick Papers by Charles Dickens came out.
(It is often believed, actually, that the Pickwick Papers, and by extension, all of Charles Dickens works were the first fandom!)
You all know that Victorian England was beside themselves. But there was more than that.
People held actual demonstrations. They frantically wrote to Doyle to change his mind, devastated that Holmes would actually die. They found Joseph Bell, whom Holmes was based off of to try and fill the void. There's accounts that people would dress up as the characters and go on pilgrimages to Reichenbach Falls, as another way to cope.
For Victorian England, with not much to do when they returned home, they were mourning, quite nationally. (And in my research on fandom, Holmes’s death in 1893 was perhaps the first mourning of a fictional character to such a degree.)
And then Holmes returned. While yes, the Hound of the Baskervilles came first, Empty House followed after to explain what had happened, to ease the public.
And as much as Doyle was... bitter about this, Holmes’s return is unusually gentle. He doesn't come in in a blaze of glory, he doesn't loudly declare he's returned, he comes to his oldest and dearest companion(and maybe more?) Watson, to tell him he's back.
And of course, Watson faints. Doyle could have easily had Holmes chastise him, or leave, but instead opts to stay with Watson, to bring him back from fainting, and apologize.
And I think that level of detail is... one not often noticed.
Lastly, I love the different adaptations of the Empty House, because they inject their own gentleness to it.
Granada Holmes goes for a hug, and tenderly brings Watson back to consciousness. Soviet Holmes gently tells Watson(and Mrs. Hudson) that he's back, and hugs them both. And so on.
And it's brilliant.
