ive noticed some engagement on some of my monkees (shit)posts from way back in 2012/2013 — my 14/15 year old self. which is endearing, bc im aware the monkees fandom is still going, and is perhaps even more active than it was in my day. this did remind me of a @fansplaining article by allegra rosenberg / @areyougonnabe that i finally got around to reading earlier this week, the beatles live!

(i have no idea how long some of you have been here, so to recap i was fully obsessed with classic rock bands and 1960s/70s pop culture from like, 12 to 15 years old. profound impact on me in many ways, still love 60s/70s music, culture and history. also lmfao at my fandom of the last near-decade being sparked by a film set in the 60s. the several page video essay script about x-men first class' anachronistic 1960s fashion, which is sooo close to actually being filmed, will likely be the ultimate culmination of it all) the beatles were my first music fandom — while i still have feelings for the monkees [obviously, considering my ~12 year attachment to this url across nearly all of my social media] it is the beatles that i still have brain worms for. a tiny, isolated worm, but one nonetheless. so this article, i had to read.)

i was really taken by this section on the anachronistic modernizing of beatles fandom activities.

It takes a certain stripe of fannish brain to obsess over music from a bygone age instead of modern artists—taking something as broadly popular as classic rock and treating it with all the intimate, loving attention that other fans devote to a sci-fi television show, a fantasy book series, or a cult video game. These fans are cultural archaeologists, working with the materials of the past to create the passion of the present. The phenomenon is not limited to the Beatles. On TikTok, fans place meme tweets on pictures of the Stones and Bob Dylan; celebrate Freddie Mercury’s style; and make Monkees fancams. But the Beatles fandom is still top dog, with a kind of default dominance it retains from the dawn of Beatlemania. On Tumblr, you can find gifsets of Beatles movies, fanart, and the occasional Yoko Ono stan post, side by side with more typically Tumblr-esque wackiness along the lines of Paul McCartney posts tagged “#my twink wife”, “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” memes, and toxic yaoi polls.

it made me think about how this phenomenon — the blending of modern fan practices and modern pop culture (fancams, memes, insaneposting, etc) with classic rock fandom is not new (not that allegra insinuates it is — i am speaking generally), but is something that has been around for a while, and is something i participated in quite heavily when it came to monkees fandom. whether it was

i was very invested in engineering (or maybe just yearning for + acting out desires?) a form of classic rock fandom that was "hip" to the modern fandoms i was aware of. this was likely inspired by the fact that monkees fandom at the time skewed older.

i cannot for the life of me find these accounts or screenshots of them, but i think the ultimate expression of this was a collection of twitter accounts i made as mockups of twitter stan accounts, modeled directly off of one direction accounts at the time. complete with icons that were cut-outs of musicians overlayed onto aesthetic background, and descriptions that noted how many times the musicians had interacted with them.

importantly, i could not have sustained this if not for the close friends i had at the time that were around my age and were on my wavelength, that supported it, commiserated with me, made lots — especially on the homestuck parts. even if it was a small thing, in a small fandom, it was a communal effort

idk. its interesting to see that these dreams of mine have now come to fruition.

1. You don't have to be very skilled to process through it + yeah it's horror but it's not like SCARY horror

The only mechanics are to 1. walk around 2. click things to make them do stuff 3. Collect Their Pages . There is like one chase scene that I miraculously survived first try while not knowing what the hell I'm doing cause my game took mercy upon me and bugged but you just gonna dodge the rpg sprite and run around to hide in another room so It can't be that hard . Also if you set your "Tracker" setting to 0 then this is literally the only time ur gonna get chased anyway. Whatever you do do NOT set the Tracker to anything other than 0 this is for your own sanity you won't make it

Also yeah it's like. Horror and stuff cause there is gore (that is just pixel blood + descriptions, and you can turn off the imagery anyway) and "dark" subjects (like the aforementioned. Cannibalism) but there's nothing like. Creepy on screen and no jumpscares. Trust me on this because I am a wimp and if there was anything I thought was Scary then I wouldn't be here talking to you I would be on the floor shaking and crying with a knife to my chest. I literally get scared of Minecraft mobs

Ok so the closest thing to Scary in it would be like, some Tense scenes where you have a timer and you gotta hide before Jeff the Killer eats you or when you get chased that one time. Which was terrible for my heartrate but also it's not that hard + It's me I literally get scared of Minecraft mobs

answered here and i dont think i have another answer for this one either.. maybe just the fact that way too many writers see discourse from people who dont read or care about comics and want to comment on it in their book and no one will care. writers will talk about the whole "batman should be doing more with his money" thing as if anything will change or anyone will pay attention. genuinely i think we all collectively need to accept that hes a fictional billionaire and his money isnt real. like yes if he funded education or homeless shelters or anything else instead of being batman then crime would go down. but if he used his money to fix all the societal problems then there would be no more story. and batman writers will either try to make a deep commentary on how batman should be doing more with his money, or they'll go "look!! see!!! he IS using his money to fund these things!!!!! look!!!!!" as if itll change anything. if a writer actually was making social commentary through it i wouldnt have a problem, but so much of it is clearly just in response to random people going "um actually 🤓 batman is making gotham worse ☝️" and theyre never going to stop saying that so just stop trying to cater to them

I completely agree with everything. However, I need help, an advise. I know this isn’t therapy, it’s just Tumblr, but I’m receiving therapy since I was 10 years old and it doesn’t really help. So I just wanna talk with those who have a similar experience to mine.

I was exposed to porn at a really early age. I wasn’t SA’d, but porn was enough for me to become traumatised (diagnosed PTSD).

Btw in the hashtags screenshot there is a hashtag that mentions OCD and omg that’s literally me! I have OCD literally ever since I learned to think and talk!

But, anyway. Back to my problem.

I spent many years watching violent porn as a child. And only recently I realised that at some point I started doing it out of selfharm intention. When I was little it was just plain curiosity, these videos scared me and intrigued me, just like horror movies, but when other children were watching normal horror movies, I was feeling the same while watching the most insane and disgusting porn ever.

When I was 12-13 yo I used to take boiling hot showers for hours because I felt as if my body is dirty and gross. I started taking antidepressants and got another therapist and over time it kinda just stopped, now I even avoid showers often because I’m lazy to take showers, so this is okay now, but my porn problem never gone away, it just looks different now.

About two years ago I started masturbating really often because I found out about clitoral vibrators and I just couldn’t stop doing it. But the only things that’d get me off were gross, it started with yaoi bdsm stuff, then it slowly drifted to something I’m really ashamed of and I wish it’d just stop. I wish I’d never move from yaoi stuff. Now I masturbate to girls getting forcefully impregnated. I cry a lot because of it. But these thoughts are almost intrusive. I tried to avoid masturbation for about 2 weeks with my bf’s help (he said we’ll party if I’ll last 2 weeks without it, and if I’ll snap he’ll throw away something from my geek collection, I asked him to give me motivation so yep). But even with that I thought about it all the time. And then I convinced both myself and my bf that “you should give me another chance, cmon! I also often think about a series of comics that really fucked me up as a kid when I jerk off (erenisch comics, if anybody is curious).

When I was a child, when I’d go to sleep I’d spend some time coming up with plots before I fall asleep. These plots were about saving the women who I saw in porn. I’d never ever want to roleplay that, nor especially to be actually SAd. I don’t know why my body orgasms the fastest when I think about these. I genuinely don’t know what’s wrong with me and how to fix it. I wish I could fix it. I wish I could just think about idk, tongue kissing and come just because of it (that’s my bf, he never watches porn and he only masturbates like that). I wish I could do the same without damaging myself each time.

It’s like a literal physical thing. When I don’t think of anything during masturbation, I can’t get an orgasm, I tried. When I think of something that doesn’t relate my crazy fantasy, well. It takes a long time but sooner or later I get an orgasm. Though, I still need that key moment I cum to, so I can’t help but get reminded of my crazy fantasy anyway because even if the context is different the key moment is the same. I tried everything. I don’t know. I just need help. Please. Just an advise. Maybe there is someone who has gone through the same thing.

The thing about BDSM/stripping/pornography/prostitution that I critique is not about what the sub/victim/penetrated wants. I don't care to shame the person with the abuse and rape fantasy. People from oppressed groups who hate themselves will seek out means of self destruction and humiliation. They are taught to. It is what society trained them to do. It is not surprising that many young women (and young gay men) run towards violent sex, plastic surgery, extreme piercing, extreme tattooing, prostitution and exploitation. What other group is taught to hate themselves more? What other group is more death seeking? I am not shocked the groups with the highest rates suicide attempts, eating disorder, lowest record self esteem, poor body image, mocked the most in media, have high murder and sexual assault rates hate themselves and seek lifestyles that reflect or perpetuate their own destruction. "Choke me daddy," the 14yr old writes on her social media page, and gets likes of people thinking she cool, hot and progressive. She knows there are people who want to do horrible things to her, and if she lets them, and "enjoys" it, that is the closest she will get to love, attention, and praise. She reads and masturbates to rape fantasies in fanfiction/dark romance books because she is aware of the place society wants her in and was a victim of their concerted efforts to normalize and even eroticize her submission and degradation. She is not a product of free choice and individualism. She is a good student of society's bigotry and hatred. Proof of free choice would be her having the highest standards, self preservation and dignity. That is what would make her stand out amongst her peers. That is what would buck tradition. I have grown up around poor black people my entirely life, and watch many people destroy their lives with drugs, gangs, getting pregnant by multiple men, and many other social ills. Many of these things were avoidable, I avoided them, a few of my friends did, I wondered why they hadn't. And it's after I grew up that I realize many of those people didn't think they were capable of doing anything else, or were deserving of any other kind of life. When the world hates you, makes a systematic effort to destroy you every day, you listen and begin destroying yourself first. In a way to pretend you have total control over your life at all times.

I will not argue with a sub/pornstar/stripper/prostitute that she should be ashamed of herself. She already is. Their black and white profile photo without any facial organs seems self-assuming and even intimidating at the first glance. What might they chat about? Local feminist practices? Dark fairy tales?  

Yet quite jubilant as they are, their contents are mostly BL-novel recommendations. Their videos usually follow these steps: one will chat about character settings of the protagonists, plot spoiler warning, plots, ending with comments from the other girl.

BL, the acronym for Boys’ Love, is a genre of fictional media featuring homoerotic relationships between male characters. Originating from Japan as the Yaoi culture (or Fujoshi culture, Fujoshi as the female consumers of BL), this fad came to China in the late 1990s with an increase in popularity in the 2010s.  

Just like locals in Cuba have limited access to the Internet, so is BL media suppressed in China. In 2015, laws prohibiting depictions of same-sex relationships in television and film were implemented in China. Reasons behind the prohibition include anti-pornography, violation of copyrights, and protection of masculine hegemony. Of course, these laws cannot stop Fujoshi from creating and seeking their entertainment. So where can they go?

I put their videos in the weekly package, because (1) they update weekly so my consumers can chase them as a series (2) their videos help form the sense of solidarity in the Fujoshi community with bullets comments from other viewers.

Surely, I can follow demanded writers on Twitter and screenshot their moves, but the communication will always be delayed and intermediated.

Putting the content above together challenged me, for I realized in my process how limited knowledge I have of the Fujoshi community. Because the products of BL media include different types, I tried to stand in their shoes to exhaust my imagination of what or how they may consume. Another challenge is: I run out of links, even knowing there must be more content. The human resources and information exchange needed for such infrastructure building are beyond my competence. ‘Paquete Semanal’ is a brilliant individual idea as well as communal efforts. Specialists in certain types of media searching and network of collection and distribution are essential in forming the weekly package in an organized and timely manner. Like said in the video, “it’s a business.”

CRISIS CORE VS BEFORE CRISIS - TEENAGE CLOUD INTERPRETATION

For the most part I let it go, but my most recent post on a set of screenshots from Before Crisis has reminded me of why I find it challenging and sometimes even annoying to play Cloud pre-game. The FFVII Compilation is full of flaws, especially when it comes to continuity. One area that’s always irked me is the inconsistency in Cloud’s personality / character between Before Crisis (BC) and Crisis Core (CC).

BC and CC show very different types of personality for Cloud. BC takes a more assertive (sometimes reckless) approach, while CC takes a more passive, submissive approach. I’ve seen in both fiction and artwork how Cloud is portrayed as shy, timid, and wholly dependent on other people (most commonly this is Zack; sometimes he’s a blushing, mushy mess in front of Sephiroth). Nevermind that a lot of fanart completely erase the concept of him having muscles --- a yaoi thing, I’m assuming? --- the theme of timorous behavior is glaring.

As a teenager, it isn’t unlikely for Cloud to experience mood swings or dips in confidence. As someone who lacked a father or proper male role model when he was young, there are various different ways he could cope with that. Relying on another, older male figure isn’t illogical. Hell, he saw Sephiroth as a perfect example of strength and success --- the sort of man who can win the hearts and respect of many. (For Cloud, this personally lands on gaining Tifa’s attention, but that’s a topic for another day.)

However, though he has some insecurity, he does still show he has some headstrong qualities. It can’t be said that all of Cloud’s personality in the original game (OG) is Zack’s. As the player progresses through the story, and collectively both player and characters / Cloud learn about the truth behind Nibelheim’s incident and the twisted plot between Sephiroth, Jenova, Meteor, and Shinra, it’s seen that Cloud actions sometimes contradict each other. You could almost say it’s like two people are fighting for the steering wheel. Cloud still exists in himself, his memories are just screwed up. So, on that note, he exhibits leadership qualities, and possesses the perseverance to carry out a mission / task to its end (even when it tears him apart inside) that don’t necessarily stem from Zack.

That sort of fortitude generally isn’t born from someone who, just five-ish years prior, had a very timid, submissive personality as seen in CC, where Cloud very much takes a backseat in various conversations or tasks. Granted, CC was meant to focus heavily on Zack, but that shouldn’t mean Cloud cannot still be strong-willed. In BC, which happens almost simultaneously with CC (plus or minus a couple years), Cloud shows he has that same willfulness in the OG. That same recklessness. Even though Cloud only cameos in BC, those two or three brief scenes more accurately portray a precursor to Cloud in the OG, than the various cutscenes and interactions in CC. He hints at the Cloud that we, the players, recognize to exist even after Zack’s disguise (I use this word loosely) disappears.

Fans are welcome to interpret as they please, and favor whichever version that suits them, but personally, I find CC’s version of Cloud to be a bit distasteful. While it does show that Cloud has vulnerabilities, insecurities, and a need to seek out someone perceived as stronger --- just as you’d imagine any young person would look to a role model, whether biological or not --- it eliminates the other side of him that shows he isn’t weak, he isn’t helpless, he isn’t some submissive pup in a yard full of hounds. He’s young, yes. He’s inexperienced, yes. But he still has teeth and willing to use them, even if it gets him a kick or bite in return. He’s still capable of holding a conversation with a high head and straight back. He’s still capable of raising his weapon without shaking arms.

Cloud isn’t weak. He has his weaknesses, but he isn’t weak. He isn’t inept. He isn’t easy. He needs a good kick in the ass once in a while, but once he’s moving, you can damn well bet he’ll run to the finish.

Server highlights so far:

-we have built a village named “gay town”. there is public amenities like a garden and pokemon center and stadium but also a prison where you have to go to if you break server rules. the warden gets an enchanted stick named “the yaoi paddle” they can hit prisoners with. prisoners can play prison break.

-we have a pokemon league set up and everyone is building gyms (so whoever collects all the gym badges becomes champion). Dual type gyms are allowed for more variety. and im doing a kinda fun thing where I ask challengers their pokemon team level before fighting them and use different pokemon based on that (if they have lower leveled pokemon I’ll stick to my lower level team, if they have higher leveled pokemon i go all out). Some of the gyms are gorgeous builds and others are silly as hell

-we built a train station. the track leading to my gym is insane. i call it the “rollercoaster wiggler”

-we have a ghost infestation. haunters always spawn its a legit issue. i was taking a screenshot of a field full of haunters when a fucking shiny haunter spawned. Then i took a screenshot of 11 wild haunters and my giant ass shiny gengar

-herobrine is there.

So yeah its a lot of fun. friends i am begging you to join me if youre interested. theres not many people so you dont have to worry about joining a big huge server (literally only 3 people including myself so far). And if you wanted to become better friends with us we could vc on discord. yippeee
