honestly, the new fandom sphere (mostly people who only got super into fandoms during the pandemic) is so WEAK!

they cower at non-human romances, avoid any nuance in seeing characters, can't fathom crack-ships who haven't met/are from different universes, and balk at multi-shippers. I myself ship ghoulcy mainly because john hancock is the loml, but I can enjoy some max x lucy, and even other throuples. yknow why? because it's fictional! it may seem icky to one, but appealing to another.

like OP said, as long as we all tag things appropriately and learn how to block tags/keywords/blogs, everyone would have a better experience.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the people that are upset about Lucy Maclean and Cooper Howard being shipped are those from outside the fandom, and just barely got into Fallout.

They would’ve known by now that shipping ghouls is quite popular. No one in this community really cares about a stupid age gap. Fallout has presented us some freaky stuff over the years. Marry Me FISTO. The most popular fanfics from Fallout 3/4 are with ghouls (John Hancock, Charon, etc). Don’t be discouraged by the popularity of it, just write and draw the ship you want more representation of, and don’t be a dick.

In addition, Sympathetic does not have to mean Redeemable either. There are some characters that do horrible things and u can easily see why they snapped that way and feel bad for their descent into madness, whatever that is for the story, but still have them not deserve to be forgiven. Just because the villian has a Tragic Reason for why they think they need to do this and/or why they feel bad about doing it, doesn't mean that they can be fixed or should be.

I think it's beautiful how much media now shows that even villians have a Reason that you can understand for why they do the things they do, but I also see a lot of villians that get Redemption Arcs that really shouldn't have. Yes they were Sympathetic characters but they also did something that if u didn't know that past, they wouldn't be seen by the fandom as Redeemable. I would understand if there was a punishment they already endured type thing of like "this character was sealed for 300 years and is now an angel baby", but some Redeemed Villians did absolutely terrible things for a long long time and got redeemed cuz fans liked them too much with some of them with having shown 0 remorse or making up for it.

A good Redemption arc is great but not every Sympathetic Villian needs to have a Happy Ending. Some of them do not deserve it no matter how Sympathetic their arc was.

I feel like a thing I wish was more generally acknowledged across fandoms is that "I don't find this character sympathetic" and "This character was not intended to be sympathetic" are obviously connected but are, ultimately, two completely different statements that may not overlap at all.

Ultimately what you think about any given character is a completely subjective issue that has no right or wrong answer. The narrative may be trying to evoke sympathy for them, and you may just feel that it flat-out was not successful in doing that. You may look the author straight in the eye and say "Nope, I see what you're trying to do, but f*ck this guy actually, he's The Worst and that's all there is to it". And no one can tell you that you're wrong for doing so.

But when it comes to picking up on what the story is trying to do, whether you ultimately think it did a good job or not, I would argue there's at least some measure of objective reality. And I feel like people sometimes end up conflating them, so you end up with these posts like "I can't believe people sympathize with this character when the story clearly just wants you to hate them!" and it's like... yeah, I think people sympathize with this character because the story is very clearly and intentionally painting them as sympathetic. I could point you at a dozen different scenes that are clearly meant to evoke sympathy for This Character. You don't have to have found any of it compelling, but at a certain point recognizing it's there is a simple matter of reading comprehension.

There is something about proudly proclaiming a show "tumblrista catnip" that makes me emotional.

Something about how for years tumblrinas were ridiculed by show creators.

Something about Supernatural having a meta episode set at a convention with all the weirdo fans that made the main characters uncomfortable. Something something about Becky and the message that fangirls are gross and obsessive.

Something about creators mocking fandoms, dismissing them as freaks. Something about queer people not being welcome to engage in their creations because "why do you have to make everything gay?"

Something about the malicious culture of queerbaiting throughout the 2000s/2010s, followed by Bury Your Gays tropes across the media landscape because hell, you should be grateful we even gave you queer characters to begin with - and everyone dies in our show! You ain't special!

Something about Destiel questions being banned from conventions...

And then...

Something instead about Good Omens, and letting the story adapt naturally, embracing the fanbase and leaning into the fanservice.

Something about Our Flag Means Death, and the genuine outpouring of love and affection between cast, crew, and fandom that culminated in an explosion of fanworks that were never once mocked or deemed gross or wrong.

Something about Sandman, and staunchly digging in their heels on the queerness of it all, refusing to give in to the homophobes and instead avidly mocking THEM on social media rather than us.

Something about the writers hearing about fandoms favourite ships and excitedly stating that YES! We DID lean into that because it happened naturally and made sense.

Something about a firefighter coming out as bisexual after 7 seasons...

So yeah, something about a new high quality show made FOR US. By creators that love US. Respect US, and WANT our love.

Something about US FINALLY being a target audience for the best shows being made on TV now.
