do you know what stresses me out? those people who use social media for posts that are like “6 months ago I was in such a dark place but I slowly pulled myself out of it” and then 6 MONTHS LATER they do the same thing!!!! like. “you THOUGHT I was having a good time but I wasn’t but now I have healed etc.” and they just keep going on an endless loop.

OH MY GOD i've been seeing catholicapandam on my Instagram reels constantly recently! yeah she seems fun once she mentioned that apparently she goes to an arabic-speaking catholic church or smth? like she's not roman catholic the church she goes to is an eastern catholic church in communion with the vatican
Oh no way?? I haven't made it that far down the rabbit hole yet, that is fascinating if true (and on brand tbh). I know she goes to chapel at her college a lot but I think she does Sunday mass somewhere else, and now that you mention it, the black veils she wears for that mass are pretty Eastern European-y.
I love a neurodivergent influencer/advocate and am fascinated by very religious folks, so she checks those boxes. plus she seems very self aware, at least compared to the ultra religious folks I usually follow, and I find that super refreshing (like for example, she's talked about Catholicism being her special interest and that she understands that has an affect on how she practices).
She grew up secular too and is pretty young, so she also gets the internet and trends in a way similar people I follow don't, which makes her more fun to watch lol. Highly recommend her account to anyone into that kind of thing.

Jessica McBride at Heavy:
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer was featured on Instagram feeding a social media influencer a Dorito in a controversial video that went viral on October 10. The Whitmer Doritos video first appeared on the Instagram page of Liz Plank, who posts as @feministfabulous. She has more than 600,000 followers on Instagram and more than 155,000 followers on X. Plank, who also has a Substack page, calls herself a “feminist who loves men” on Instagram. She is also a podcaster.
instagram
The Whitmer Doritoes video shows the Democratic governor in a blue dress wearing a Harris/Walz baseball cap and feeding a kneeling Plank a Dorito. “If he won’t, Gretchen Whitmer will,” the influencer wrote with the video on Instagram. “Chips aren’t just delicious, the CHIPS Act is a game-changer for U.S. tech and manufacturing, boosting domestic production of semiconductors to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers! Donald Trump would put that at risk.” The video emerged as Michigan remains a key battleground state that could help determine the presidential election. It quickly became controversial online, with one X page writing, “Very rarely do I come across a political video that I have no comment on. This Gretchen Whitmer video is so bizarre that I’m at a loss for words.” That post had more than 300,000 views in just a few hours. Another influencer called the video “strange” and wrote that it left people “confused” on both sides of the political spectrum.
Plank explained the video on Substack, writing, “My dream has always been to bring you more video content, and today, that dream comes true with a very special interview on Chip Chat, a new series that I’ve been wanting to do FOR YEARS where I eat chips with my favorite people and bring you along with me.”
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) triggers right-wing snowflakes by feeding Liz Plank a Dorito chip with Plank kneeling.
There was NO sacrilege to Catholics in the video.

Bud Light, the biggest boycott target last year for its brief marketing partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney, has not mentioned Pride Month on social media and has instead promoted its partnership with the Ultimate Fighting Championship and MMA fighter Dustin Poirier.
Nike, also targeted last year for advertisements in which Mulvaney modeled a sports bra and leggings, has not made a Pride post on Instagram yet, despite posting an advertisement for its annual “Be True” Pride merchandise on June 1 last year (Nike’s “Be True” website still only references its 2023 collection, and there is only one “Be True” shirt available for purchase on its online store).
Target scaled back its Pride collection, has not posted for Pride on its Facebook, X or Instagram accounts.
The North Face previously garnered pushback for its “Summer of Pride” event series in 2022 and 2023 in partnership with drag queen Pattiegonia, but it made no announcement of the event this year and it does not appear to have released a Pride collection online as in previous years (though it did make a celebratory Pride post on Instagram).
The U.S. Navy, which sparked controversy last year for updating its Facebook profile picture and cover photo to rainbow colors for Pride Month, did not do so this year—despite changing its photo for other heritage months like Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May and Women’s History Month in March. But it did make a post for Pride.
Those are its bullet points at the top. The article also mentions:
Last year's drama: The U.S. Navy uploaded a Pride-themed Facebook cover photo and rainbow profile pic on June 1, and replaced them less than 12 hours later. It reportedly deleted posts for Pride Month from its Twitter and Instagram accounts. This year, it posted nothing at all.
Kohl’s came under fire [in 2023] for their Pride merchandise line, with conservatives accusing the stores of sexualizing children.
Various sports teams, as well as Major League Baseball and NASCAR, angered some fans last year by making posts in support of Pride Month.
The L.A. Dodgers invited the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to Pride Night. Then uninvited them after conservative Catholic group and Florida senator freaked out. Then reinvited them, and apologized, after L.A. Pride and the ACLU pulled out and the L.A. LGBT Center demanded the event be canceled.
Years-old advertising campaigns also faced renewed outrage last year, including a Jack Daniel’s ad featuring performers from “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and a promotional push from Ford featuring a rainbow-colored truck.
Some companies still changed their social media icons to Pride-themed logos this year, including HP, Cisco, Pfizer, Citi and Bank of America.
When companies started deleting their Pride posts last year, congressional representative and conservative demon Lauren Boebert tweeted, “They’ve seen the power of conservative boycotts, and they are running scared. . . We are so back!”
Tumblr media
Conservative pundit Mark Levin tweeted
Tumblr media
THIS IS WHY RAINBOW CAPITALISM MATTERS.
Forbes says:
Target's sales for May-July 2023 were 5.4% lower than in 2022. The number of purchases AND the amount spent declined during that quarter. Online sales fell way more: 10.5 percent. So this year, they only put Pride stuff in half their stores.
The New Republic pointed out:
These are not just instances of people saying, “Oh, I don’t like the politics of this company. I’m not gonna buy their stuff.” These are campaigns of harassment. They’re extremely confrontational and heated. It’s not just saying, let’s use our purchasing power to put pressure on companies that we don’t like.
...A lot of this is about making sure that products are really touted as manly. Manly and patriotic and freedom loving.
It all started with DeSantis's "Don't Say Gay" bill.
So much of this fucking shit avalanche started with his "Don't Say Gay" bill.
Disney publicly opposed it, because its employees did, and because it figured the general public did too. DeSantis went, "How DARE--" and got this Christopher Rufo dude to mastermind his attack.
Chris Rufo, of course, was the kind of architect of the anti–critical race theory moral panic.
But he also laid out this strategy that the first step in fighting back against this, is you have to get the average, conservative citizen pissed off about things that they probably weren’t pissed off about before. Concepts like diversity, you have to convince them that this is leftist code.
And then you have to get them whipped up enough that they are going to demand change, including demanding some government action against big business, which is really interesting because, again, this is the Republican  Party, which has been the ultimate defenders of the rights of big business to do whatever they want.
....I think a lot of it is about the idea that “you are a cultural institution that should be affirming and endorsing and supporting, through your actions, our right-wing values. And if you don’t, we are going to punish you.”
The corporate bottom line seems to be that even though Florida is losing tourist and conference bookings; Disney's reputation increased 10 points last year; Anheuser-Busch's and Kohl's stock recovered; and so did Target's market cap....
They're all scared to show support for us again.
They got a taste of how conservatives treat us.
It's sad at the end of May seeing people reblog the "here it comes!" Pride logos post. You didn't notice that brands have decided it is no longer safe to openly support LGBT rights. The past 2 years have shown a dramatic decline in corporate sponsorship of Pride. And no, we don't care about the corporations, but you should care that they think the general public will oppose their support of LGBT rights. Anyway pay attention. The logos didn't change for Pride. It's bad.

The guest list for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Met Gala “leaked”.
The event which - in recent years has been held the first Monday in May - has been moved to September 13th this year due to the ongoing pandemic.  As always the event is chaired by Anna Wintour, who last year was rumored to be dating her longtime friend, actor Bill Nighy and if that’s true, she need to make it red carpet official. He’s forever stylish.  Her fellow honorary chairs are Adam Mosseri who is the head of Instagram and designer/filmmaker/hater of mandals (me too,Tom!) Tom Ford.
This year’s co-chairs are Timothee Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Amanda Gorman and Naomi Osaka.
Tumblr media
This year’s theme is “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion“ which will be a celebration of American designers and the event will be a two-parter with one event taking place now and the other on the first Monday in May 2022 with the theme “In America: An Anthology of Fashion”.
In the past few days a few names from the guest list have been revealed and it’s heavy on social media influencers which isn’t surprising considering one of the chairs is over Instagram.  This, of course, has raised the question of whether the Met Gala has lost its prestige by these new invitees.  But it’s the same argument that was made years ago when models were pushed to the background and the event became the playground of actors.  Even designers and fashion hoi polloi stopped attending in part to the price of the tickets ($30k-$50k; tables $275k) and due to the focus on celebrity and not fashion.
That’s why Iris Arpel, celebrating her 100th birthday this coming week and who once had 86 outfits housed at the exhibit, stopped attending.
Tumblr media
Who are some of the influencers who will attend? Allyson Felix, Noah Beck, Liza Koshy, Bretman Rock and Loren Grey.
Tumblr media
Other well known influencers like Nikki Tutorials, James Charles, Jeffree Star, Charlie and Dixie D’Amelio and Nikita Dragun are also on the list.
Look it’s not really a mystery why influencers are invited. The real mystery to me is how did SNL’s Chloe Fineman get on the list??
Was it her Timothee Chalamet impression?
youtube
Here’s a look back at my favourite looks of these year’s attendees.  There are a ton to choose from but I’m going by who actually followed the theme.
For some reason I felt more people adhered to the 2018 theme  Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination. There were so many incredible looks that year.
Tumblr media
Rihanna who was the co-chair that year led by example with the stunning Margiela design.
Tumblr media
Blake Lively looking regal in Versace.
Tumblr media
Cardi B. during the same year in Moschino.
Tumblr media
Zendaya won hands down for her Joan of Arc look by Versace.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Same year Jennifer Lopez wore this punk-y Balmain design.
Tumblr media
2015′s theme was “China: Through The Looking Glass” and Sarah Jessica Parker wore an H&M dress with a elaborate Philip Treacy headdress.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2016′s theme was Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology and I think it was a hard theme for people to grasp the concept of.
The person who nailed it was Claire Danes with her light up Zac Posen gown
Tumblr media
But Beyonce looked great in her nude latex Givenchy design.
Tumblr media
2019′s theme was “Camp: Notes on Fashion” and the obvious winner was that year’s co-chair Lady Gaga who had four costume changes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Followed by Kim Kardashian in a Thierry Mugler design that simulated a dripping wet look.

About Olivia Rodrigo
It is a sign of a deep lack of self-esteem in our American monoculture that when Olivia Rodrigo so recently became the biggest pop musician of the moment most writers tasked to interpret said phenomenon were by default so cynical about the music they live to represent to the world that they seemed totally unaware of the most obvious explanation, one so obvious that it's almost childishly democratic: that she is simply the most naturally compelling new artist working in pop today.
Instead, they have cited elements of the music that are actually quite detrimental to its quality. Most pop-punk was weak, whiny, and obnoxiously self-involved when it was popular, and the fact that one of Olivia’s songs (“good 4 u”) sounds an awful lot like the good stuff (“Misery Business”) is indeed a sign of creative bankruptcy. That the album often sounds so much like Lorde, Taylor Swift, or Billie Eilish is only evidence of the pop machine’s greed-driven need for familiarity and the moments where these influences are truly overwhelming are the album’s least original and most incongruous. The truly teenage moments, despite their popularity with millennials and real teenagers alike, are out of touch and uninspired. I am a thirty-two year old man who also cannot parallel park, but I will never be able to relate to this kind of quirkiness in song if the singer is a rich teenager who claims in interviews that she pays for valet parking in order to avoid it.
Her relationship with Taylor Swift, whose influence is indeed all over every song on the album, seems destined to be tense, and Olivia performs best when her own creativity manages to escape it. “favorite crime” is essentially a Taylor Swift album track, imitative of Swift’s least incisive creative tendencies. “And I watched as you fled the scene / Doe-eyed as you buried me / One heart broke, four hands bloody,” writes Olivia, in the kind of mildly clever figurative imagery that makes the listener’s brain work to uncover a meaning that was already obvious, the kind of line Taylor writes in her weakest moments. The song’s apparent antecedent, “Victim,” performed live on Instagram in June of 2020, doesn’t sound like Taylor at all:
Let me be the victim of your perfect crime Bathe in my blood so I’m not the bad guy Yeah, I messed up so that you’ll mess up too I really want the blame to be on you So drive the knife in deep Make the victim bleed
youtube
“Make the victim bleed.” It’s both unpretentiously direct and painfully deep. The imagery is vibrant and even specific enough to evoke centuries of high Catholic masochism without being at all complicated. Olivia’s best lyrics are indeed never detailed for their own sake, but calmly symbolic, referential of cultural archetypes, serving in the makeup of some more abstracted, weightier conceptual design.
Guilt, particularly of the religious kind, would seem to be her true creative center, a counterintuitive thought, given that so many of her songs officially released are so especially accusatory, to an empowering extent. But she always admits her doubt: “'Cause let’s be honest, we kinda do sound the same / Another actress / I hate to think that I was just your type” she says of her ex’s new girlfriend. Indeed every song on the album that is explicitly about heartbreak goes out of its way to acquit the criminal in one way or another, either implicitly or directly, describing situations that are as emotionally painful as they are understandable from both sides.
She knows, in other words, that her anger at the boy is both valid and unjustified, that her sadness is real but not at all unique. Her pain transcends by its lack of an honest target, and this is what makes her music relatable to all ages. Without quite saying it, through a contradictory combination of dedicated vulnerability and self-awareness she asks the universe--or God even--rather than the boy, why did this happen? Why does this happen and is it my fault? "Did I do something wrong?"
More than anywhere else, you can hear it in her voice. Though lots of different things can get in the way, this transcendent guilt sits in her voice as a sustained emotional power, shifting between a dull pain somewhere deep in her chest and a lump in her throat, lending sincere force and tragic significance to subject matter that most have interpreted as specifically teenaged and delightfully naive. Bruce Springsteen famously said that the first time he heard “Like a Rolling Stone,” Bob Dylan’s voice “sounded somehow simultaneously young and adult.” This is the kind of compliment disallowed to teenage girls by the use of the “you’re mature for your age” trope by predatory old men, which is a shame, because if anyone deserves to be called mature it's a teenager who takes guilt seriously before they’ve really had a chance to even do anything wrong.
Maybe she has had her marvelously unanimous success because this pained emotional high is heavily tempered on SOUR, particularly in its singles, two of which drown it out in the bridge (“drivers license”, “deja vu”), and the third of which filters it through talk-singing and distorted yelling (“good 4 u”). Maybe this is why she switched out “Victim,” a song where she sings of her “guilty Catholic heart,” and pleads “make the victim me,” for “favorite crime.” It does seem almost too heavy for American pop, and maybe a little dab of it is all the industry’s recipe requires because America doesn’t know how to process a mature teenage girl in a healthy way. But it is the passion at the source of her talent and, although her album is not at all perfect, shines through like the burning sun at every opportunity.

hi!!! I’m a puertorriqueño/nicaragüense enby looking into resources for learning bruja stuff, any good place you know to start?
I’ve gotten a couple of asks about this lately, and i’m so happy to know there are more latinos finding their way to the practice, tumblr’s brujeria tag often gives the impression that theres so little of us out there reclaiming our practices but getting asks like these brings me a lot of faith that thats not true :) first and foremost:
GETTING INTO BRUJERIA IS HARD.
it really is. baby brujos like us know that better than anyone- getting started, is often the hardest part of doing anything, and its no different with brujeria. it can feel so overwhelming and feeling lost is natural. from my experience, although i am still a newbie ive been able to find a lot of information out there, here are the best places to find info, sorted by priority:
FAMILY! a little self explanatory, but brujeria at its best is truly is an inherited, familial practice. If you can, before delving into internet resources, definitely connect w your family if you’re able to and ask them for guidance and about their experiences!
Your family is always the best resource over anything you can find online; theres so much misinformation out there or information not relevant to your region and if someone in your family already has established practices, always trust them first
Do some thinking back to all your cultural traditions, quirks, stories, and superstitions that you’ve  learned from your family across time and never thought too much about- and rediscover them under a new light
KEEP IN MIND: brujeria is NOT a singular , concrete practice w concrete rules in itself, the term blankets a lot of traditions across latam, the caribbean, mexico, but imo its always best to stick with brujeria related to your heritage and where your connection is.
this can be hard for people (like me!) with huge family taboos toward brujeria that make it unsafe to ask around about, and/or limitations in family connections (also like me unfortunately). I personally can really only get the tidbits and stories that my family accidentally slips out when I occasionally see them. i try to write them down as much as possible, but the info i can get is limited... and thats where the following comes in.
ONLINE COMMUNITIES. i.e, youtube, tumblr, instagram brujx communities. notice I haven’t said “internet” in general- the reason why i trust community based social media more than random individual websites you find on google is because, in the case of brujeria and honestly any non-european craft, you’re often gonna find a LOT of white people writing blogs, books, etc about their “spiritual experiences” in latam countries and wrongly/incorrectly taking ATR or indigenous traditions (like with smudging). I know, with social media, although those same white people are also on insta and tumblr, it’s a LOT easier to see the face behind the accounts and differentiate who to trust, who’s legit and has real experience to share, rather than a nameless, faceless, website that is actually some colonizer sharing colonized ideas who thinks theyre on a spiritual journey taking traditions all willy nilly. And the fact that in social media, its much easier to find a lot of good brujas at once bc they tend to follow each other lmao.what ive personally done to find information tho is essentially SCOUR tumblrs, insta accs, and watching tons of youtube videos for posts, accounts, videos, etc, and narrowing down good info from there through , namely:
CHECKING WHO YOUR SOURCE IS!!!
ASKING YOURSELF FROM WHAT EXPERIENCE THEYRE SPEAKING FROM
ALWAYS TAKING EVERYTHING WITH A GRAIN OF SALT
AND STICKING TO INFO FROM CULTURES OPEN AND RELEVANT TO ME.
again, brujería is different depending on where your family is from in latam, and if you have an established connection to indigenous and/or black roots, so it’s useful to use keywords relating to that when searching (like if ur black, you can look into ATRs(african traditional religions) which tend to mix deeply with brujeria, if ur indigenous, finding other people from your tribe is great, and if youre not pursuing your already learned traditions you can think about connecting to them more deeply(altho indigenous traditions are their own thing, sometimes they do mix with brujeria too), and apart from familial roots, if ur catholic/christian and/or want to explore it, saint work/catholic brujeria might be a good fit for you!)
tumblr: there are a couple of fantastic brujxs on this site with great blogs and resources who have sadly left the site, but i still go through their posts heavily for spells, rituals, scraps of info! etting started w brujería is hard bc there’s really not that much info out there right now, but i compile as many good brujeria posts i find on my acc.
@brujeria-n-bongs great for catholic brujeria, now at @Upliftherbs on instagram
@brujeria-lost @barberwitch @reina-morada @highbrujita
@naomi121406 is by far the most active and informative tumblr resource ive found, shes an afro-indigenous diaguita curandera from argentina so shes also really helpful if ATRs are in your path!
Im not black myself and dont follow ATRs so i don’t really know many good blogs for afrolatine brujxs out there but if anyone would like to tag some in the replies thatd be awesome!
instagram: Ive found that instagram #brujeria tags has a pretty healthy active stream of posts. You’re gonna have to sift through a lot of them to get to the good stuff though- imo a lot of hispanics use the brujería tag not to mean “latine brujería” but just the spanish word for witchcraft, so a lot of white hispanics will put wicca/neo witchcraft in the tag. imo that’s really not something i’m personally interested in bc it’s not true to brujeria’s traditional nature, is very white/eruropean , and that wicca shit basically just got here. its a relatively a recent thing😭 so i try to stick to bruja accounts that aren’t influenced by that.
youtube: The youtube brujería tag is hit or miss? and again, contains a lot of wicca. But there are some good practitioners on there like The Mexican Witch! You just gonna look around, and dont be afraid to click on videos by really really small youtubers; they often are the ones with the most informative and legit things to say!
Everyone’s path as a bruja/o/x (sjdf trying to be inclusive w gendered language is difficult) is different but here are some topics i think are great to look into as a beginner!
ancestors: start at the bottom and figure out who they are, where theyre from, and set up an altar. it’ll help you a lot with figuring out your identity and path as a bruja later on.
setting up a grimoire
divination: tarot is actually what got me into brujeria at first! tarot isnt strictly traditional and is european in itself but its a wonderful tool for connecting to dieties, saints, etc as well as super fun and helps a lot with introspection
ritual abrecaminos, aka road opening spells!
amarres (love spells... proceed with caution)
limpias, mal de ojo
saint work: even if you’re not catholic (im ex catholic), a growing number of us (especially lgbt latines like @/upliftherbs on instagram) are starting to take back and decolonize our view of saints like La Virgen Maria and removing her from the rigid european/colonized interpretation thats been forced into us
candle spells in general (i fucking love candles tbh, cheap, easy, fun, and WORKS)
spiritual colognes, how to cleanse
finally, here are some helpful posts yall should definitely read and think about moving forward!
about using tumblr as a resource
about looking into brujeria as a part-white part latine
bruja psa + about reclaiming lost indiginety
honestly naomi’s entire brujeria tag is great and super informative for beginners and basically holds answers for almost anything at this point
hope this post helps yall out!
Tumblr media
EDIT: oh lord now that this is posted the outline format i tried to use is all kinds of fucked up please dont mind the odd numbering lmfao tumbr hates organized formats

New Post has been published on https://lovehaswonangelnumbers.org/mars-with-chiron-and-pluto-with-the-sun-july-2020-miracles-and-magnificence/
Mars with Chiron and Pluto with The Sun, July 2020 ~ Miracles and Magnificence
Mars with Chiron and Pluto with The Sun, July 2020 ~ Miracles and Magnificence
By Tania Gabrielle
Another spectacular star code is unfolding this week!
We are being showered with healing and confidence boosting heavenly alignments during this tremendous time of changes.
July’s magnificent 11 Universal Month continues with two powerful transits:
Mars conjunct Chiron
Sun opposite Pluto
Mars conjuncts Chiron in Aries on July 14.
Chiron moved into Aries in 2018 and will be moving through the first sign until 2025 – an important event in itself, since Chiron was not discovered until after it moved into Taurus in November, 1977.
Mars is the RULER of Aries.
Mars will be traveling through Aries for six months (due to a retrograde that begins on 9.9.) – so this conjunction with Chiron is a major healing moment on Mars’ journey.
Chiron, Sacred Healer, is a calming influence on Mars’ more propulsive and aggressive energy.
With this conjunction you feel like you can accomplish anything!
Then… we have the other powerful meetup with our star, the Sun, and Pluto.
The Sun was merged with Pluto on January 12, 2020 for the big stellium in Capricorn (Saturn/Pluto/Sun/Mercury conjunction).
This 500-year event – Saturn and Pluto had not met up in Capricorn since Martin Luther broke away from the Catholic Church 500 years ago – set the stage for the Big Shift in play now.
On July 15 Sun moves 180° to face Pluto in an opposition.
Pluto Purges. The Sun Shines.
We are shining the light on what is being purged.
Everything that is appearing in our conscious experience is guaranteed to faciliatate the grand awakening.
Waking from a long slumber needs to be integrated on many levels.
See everything you are experiencing now as an opportunity!
So much to share with you…
Love and Blessings,
Tania Gabrielle

Tobias Forge from Ghost in an interview (translated - badly - from German)
Tumblr media
The rock / metal band Ghost is currently on a European tour and invites in the course on 17 February for an audience in the Swiss Life Hall to Hannover ( tickets ) - presented by Count Your Bruises Magazine. Frontman Tobias Forge,  aka Cardinal Copia, took the time to start an interview with us and revealed that fans in Germany are going to have a ghost show that has never happened before and that we're aiming for a new Ghost in 2020 Album may be happy.
Hello Tobias, how are you? Thank you for your time!
Tobias : I'm fine, thank you, how are you? Thank you for the interview!
Everything is fine here too, thank you! How is the tour so far? You are in Amsterdam today, right?
Tobias : Exactly. So far we played a show, a very good start and I'm really happy!
Super. So, let's get started: Your identity was revealed two years ago, when founding members of Ghost opened a lawsuit against you. Do you see any differences between the time behind the mask and now and what has changed this revelation for you as a person and maybe even for the whole band?
Tobias: It is difficult to say what exactly the result of this revelation was. I have been recognized many, many years before. Because the people who were interested in the band were able to locate my identity online seven years ago, if they really wanted to. So for me it's hard to say if - if someone recognizes me on the street and addresses me - it's because that person saw me on French television or learned who I am six years ago. And have things changed? Every year things change. Ghost itself is getting bigger and bigger, we are doing bigger and bigger things and it's going on steadily. So sometimes it's not easy to tell if it's up to these things or because people, for example, heard "Dance Macabre" on the radio and just learned my identity online, just as they would have done three years ago. So there is no direct "before and after".
Understand. And why did you choose to perform as an anonymous band at the beginning?
Tobias: Because I wanted Ghost to be more of a kind of art form. I did not see Ghost as a band that plays metal festivals or metal bands, I thought of cabaret or some sort of theater play. It was a great idea in my head. But in reality that did not work that way. At the time, I did not think we could be commercially successful. I thought we might succeed in some ways, but on a different level. That we become an art band. I still believe that we are an artistic band, but today we are simply a commercial rock band. This is something very different than what I had in mind. That's why anonymity to my original plan would have worked very well. Anonymity does not fit the concept of a successful,
So, in the end, did you consciously decide that Ghost should be a bigger and more commercially successful band?
Tobias : Of course. Without question, I always wanted to be a professional musician who can live from his music. And I was not that before Ghost. When I realized that Ghost is more popular than I ever considered and I realized that my life's dream can come true - of course! Who would not do that?
That's true. Of course, it's always great to earn your money with your passion.
Tobias : Exactly. That sums it up. It is just as easy. Everything just went better than I thought. I did not expect it to work that way.
And how did you come to create the characters Papa Emeritus and now Cardinal Copia? What do these figures mean to you?
Tobias: It's important to keep in mind that I'm from the black metal scene. So everything I associate with occultism, upturned crosses, skulls and so on is very, very common. For me, a demonic pope was not a totally original idea because it is simply anchored in the DNA of satanic rock'n'roll. For example, take a look at the album cover for "Terrible Certainty" by Kreator. There you will find a demonic pope. So it was quite normal for me. The band is made up of nameless and defenseless monks, so what's the most logical character you can put over them? Maybe a priest? Or a cardinal? Oh no, a pope! That will look cool! And to have a pope who puts on his face like a skull is historically very close to satanic rock music and heavy metal - this is Corpse Paint. And Corpse Paint is mostly a skull. I'm a big fan of the Misfits and the Italian horror rock band Death SS. The Skull Paint comes from Paul Chain (Frontman of the band Death SS - Note d. Red. ). That's what I tried to imitate. Indiana Jones "Temple Of Doom" guards also wore cool skull paints. The cardinal was finally an extension of that. I knew there would be a daddy Emeritus I, a daddy Emeritus II and a daddy Emeritus III. And then I came up with the idea: what if there is a leadership character who is not yet a pope? Well, what would he be? He would be a cardinal. He would therefore start as a cardinal and hopefully grow so far that he can later be appointed Pope. Here you can see the transition.
And how would you describe your personal relationship to religion or to Catholicism?
Tobias : My personal relationship with Catholicism is not very close. I grew up in a Protestant country. The church in my old hometown was an old Catholic church and I went into it. I have always enjoyed being there, because it is old, big, imposing and had everything that an old "horror church" must contain. She is taller than anything around her. The church has always been a very inspiring place for me. That's the one, more aesthetic and inspirational thing. On the other hand, I have experienced with Christians that they have two faces. They often pretend to represent kindness and kindness, but many of them are pretty lousy. That's why I'm often very suspicious of religious people.
Speaking of mistrust: In an interview you said that the medieval mentality has returned through social media. What do you personally think of Facebook, Instagram and Co. and how do you see social media from the perspective of your band, which can reach their fans and gain new listeners?
Tobias: As a professional musician, I just like it. I definitely have to thank social media for my career. We grew up thanks to MySpace. I think without MySpace we would not have done that at the time. In 2010, what we did was not very popular. It would have been difficult to get these effects without the internet. This "overnight sensation" would not have happened. I think that if we had appeared at another time on the scene, we would still have somehow been successful, but it would never have been the way it has gone. We will never know how it could have been. I definitely owe my career to the internet and social media. As an artist, I am very thankful. But still: I think as a parent and human that social media has many sites that are not necessarily good for people. Many people - especially young people - feel bad about something that they should not feel bad about, thanks to social media. Because they get hold of what they do not have and what they can not be. And I think that's not good.
You're right.
Tobias: I think it's good to be inspired. It's good to get inspiration from an ad, for example, for what it was in the 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's when there was a limited amount of advertising. For example, if you said, "If you use this soap, you will look like this," everyone knew it was fake. Nowadays, however, more and more advertising appears that does not look like a fake. Here is advertised a lifestyle that they believe everyone can have. But they are not saying that they are influencers who get paid and get a lot of things for free, just to tell people that. So you do not live the same life as you do, but convey that you can live such a lifestyle without doing anything, and that's a bad thing. I think, that many people believe that if you win the lottery you can spend your life doing nothing, and that is not a quality of life. Most people only feel good when they have something purposeful to do. You have a goal for yourself and for others, and that's the reason why you feel better. But social media usually promotes the view that you can quickly achieve very much with little time, you earn five million and then your life is perfect. I do not think that's a good thing because it implies many people are failing. You do not fail. You will not fail if you do not have five million in the account. Then you are not a failure. I think that's the bad thing about social media. You are constantly confronted with what you can be, but that is not achievable. And that makes people sad - that's definitely the bad side of it.
That's right. Starting next week, you will be visiting Germany for a few shows. What's behind the tour name "A Pale Tour Named Death" and what can we expect from the shows?
Tobias: The name comes from "A Pale Horse Named Death", a biblical term. This means that death sets off on a bright horse. Since our album is about dying, death, and the idea of immortality, and about being able to appreciate that you're still alive, the title makes sense. And what can we expect? From a German point of view, you can expect a show that we have not been able to do in Germany so far. All the years we toured in Germany, we have in one way or another always rather moderate shows in terms of production, etc., because we were limited because we have played at festivals, for example, had fewer opportunities and of it were held to deliver a big show. Now we finally come to Germany to present a big show. An Arena show, something we always wanted to do.
The location in Hannover is also pretty cool and quite big. When you stand on stage and look into the crowd - What kind of people do you see there and what goes through your mind?
Tobias: I see many different people. That's one of the cool things about the band's great success. When we started back then, everything was very metal oriented and we attracted younger metal fans in the first place. When we started touring and playing our own shows, I was always pleased to see that the Metal community was there - both old and new - so the 60 year old or even 70 year old fan was up there to 15-year-olds. There are always a lot of girls on our shows, indie girls, indie guys ... it's just a big mix of different people. I think it's great. I am also very pleased that the demographics are balanced - I think there are usually 40% girls or women present, which is also a very good thing for the crowd. This makes everything a little more fun. If you go to a Manowar Show, 95% of men are present. Often it is then too hard. The atmosphere just gets better when there are many women. I appreciate very much. We have a lot of kids on the shows, but on the other hand, people my own age or older, because we remind them of KISS, Alice Cooper or others. I think it's a win-win situation to address a wide audience. That's exactly what I see when I look into the audience. Every time I am surprised that this balanced mix is there. because we remind them of KISS, Alice Cooper or others. I think it's a win-win situation to address a wide audience. That's exactly what I see when I look into the audience. Every time I am surprised that this balanced mix is there. because we remind them of KISS, Alice Cooper or others. I think it's a win-win situation to address a wide audience. That's exactly what I see when I look into the audience. Every time I am surprised that this balanced mix is there.
Let's come to my last question: What does the future of Ghost look like?
Tobias : Currently very booked. We play shows throughout the year, until Christmas. This will last until 2020. We do not know exactly what 2020 will look like, but I already know that there will be some shorter tours and we will record a new album in the first half. There will be a new album in about eight months from then.
So are you already working on new songs?
Tobias : Yes, I do!
Great, I'm curious. Also on the show in Hannover next week.
Tobias : That's what I'm looking forward to, it'll be cool. This will definitely be something you have not seen in Germany by Ghost yet.
Sounds great. Thank you very much for your time and the interview. I hope you have a great tour!
Tobias : Thank you very much and have a nice day!

Open Letter to Professor Geek
Professor Geek,
I have seen a large number of your videos on YouTube. You have commented negatively on “social agenda” within movies, TV series, and comics. Very recently I sent a direct message on Instagram inviting you to a private dialogue over representation and social justice. I did not get a response even as I kept in mind what I wanted to ask or say. Why am I making this letter public? I want to help build bridges between people, however difficult that task might be in the polarized cultural climate.
You have associated yourself with “Comicsgate”, a loose grouping of fanboys (and, yes, a handful of fangirls) opposing “Social Justice Warriors” bringing “forced diversity” and “politics” into comics and related media. “Comicsgate” is itself associated with other sects of fandom that similarly militate against “forced diversity” and “politics”. People within this overall grouping assert that they do not oppose diversity among creators and characters and stories per se, but rather diversity handled poorly. I admit that diverse characters and their distinctive stories can be poorly made and feel contrived. They assert that they do not oppose integration of real-world issues per se but rather real-world issues clumsily crammed into fantastical stories. I admit that politics and social issues can be integrated poorly.
I can even accept that, ideally, one group of people should not be pitted against another. I am male, my ethnic heritage is very much northern European, I’m sexually attracted predominantly to women, and I’ve never experienced serious gender dysphoria. I do believe in reconciliation and friendship and collaboration. That basic sentiment, however, quickly bumps into complications.
The reason why so many creators want to introduce diversity revolves around historical contexts of marginalization and erasure. In your videos, you seem to ignore the historical injustices and the current desire to correct them. Is it not true that women and various ethnic or religious groups have been depicted in stereotypical or downright demeaning ways? Is it not true that sexual minorities have been depicted as either freaks or demons? Is it not true that various groups of people have suffered at the hands of ignorant or outright prideful or scornful attitudes? Is it not true that social systems arose that perpetuated injustices, from silencing to controlling to worse?
Twitter talkers and Youtube commenters who link themselves to ComicsGate might claim that their movement is open and accepting. That may be true in some if not many cases. I still ask you to read and listen to what opponents of Comicsgate are actually saying. They bring up evidence of harassment and hate speech that is simply too strong and too voluminous to be entirely dismissed. Do you intend to dismiss or gaslight? I should hope that you do not readily dismiss the many marginalized people who experience harassment and hate speech. As I type this I’m reading of Comicsgate folks abusing Twitter’s reporting system to punish their critics.
I also ask that you take a closer look at those who comment on your videos. Some of them will directly echo extreme-right stereotypes and conspiracy theories. For example, some will repeat the talking point of Cultural Marxists eroding culture and civilization. I invite you to look into critical videos that expose “Cultural Marxism” as a half-truth or outright hoax rooted in antisemitism. Do you stand against such stereotypes and conspiracy theories?
Late last year, after nearly twenty-five years as a convert, I made the very difficult decision to defect from Catholicism (and I am still seeking a new spiritual home). I had many difficult questions about what that religion looks like in the real world. When browsing the Twitter feeds of centrist or left-leaning priests and their fellow-travelers, I would see horribly inflammatory responses that further made me question the fruits of Catholicism. The term “SJW”—which you have used multiple times in your videos—is used within this context as a means of mocking any Catholic who dares to give a thought to social justice and the uplifting of marginalized people. Apparently, “saving souls”—whatever that means in the real world—is the only thing that Catholics may engage in doing. When I hear “SJW” used as pejorative I think of mockeries of anyone who voices any concern for marginalized people and systemic injustices. I’m not entirely ready to think of you using “SJW” in exactly the same way, but I feel that it draws dangerously close.
It may very well be that characters have appeared throughout comics history coming from marginalized groups. Yes, that’s true. That wasn’t not because of conservatism, for lack of a better term. That was in spite of conservatism.
Recall that Black Panther was created in the 1960s. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby may very well have riding the wave of the Civil Rights movement, when black Americans were trying to gain more rights—and, ultimately, fuller humanity—than local and state governments afforded them. Stan Lee would later publicly state that when he created the likes of Black Panther he wanted to show different people as real, human characters. He wanted to influence young readers of the time to respect different people as real, human people. You might also recall that Jack Kirby worked with Joe Simon on Captain America comics during the Second World War. They were American Jews (like Lee) who felt a need to do their part to fight Nazism even before the U.S. government declared war on the Axis Powers. They were even threatened by domestic Nazis for making those comics! I’d also like to note a famous story arc on the Superman radio show where Superman fought against the Ku Klux Klan, with a script influenced by a government agent’s research into the Klan.
Shouldn’t a wide variety of people get to share the spotlight? That’s the fundamental question that I’m discussing. Shouldn’t a wide variety of people get to be seen as full-fledged humans who are welcomed? That is the main implication of the efforts at diversifying characters and allowing diverse creators to create.
In many of your videos you have appealed to mythology and archetypes. You’ve spoken in particular of the “iconic feminine” and “iconic masculine”. Yes, I do see value in ancient mythology and archetypes. I can draw upon them. On a side note, I can even see how the differences of male and female brains (which you’ve mentioned), plus the research into those brains and apparent mismatches with the rest of the body, have led to more understanding and acceptance of trans people.
Surely I can also draw upon modern insights and the voices of historically marginalized people who are now speaking. Surely I should be able to write complex and nuanced stories that go beyond tired formulas. Would you accept that archetypes can be degraded to hollow stereotypes? Would you accept that characters should have a chance to shine outside rigid molds? Would you accept that stories should be relevant to people’s real lives and not simply be hollow escapism or antiquated abstraction?
Among the people associated with Comicsgate and other anti-SJW fan sects, I believe that you are far from the most virulent or radical. You also seem to be a sincere seeker of truth and beauty. That is why I invited you to a dialogue then later decided to compose and post an open letter. If you ever do see this, I ask you to look carefully at all my words and trust that I mean well. You are welcome to publicly respond as long as you make an honest effort to respond to the points and concerns that I raised. I ask you to consider where you go from here as a pundit and as a member of the human family.
Blessed be,
Brian Solomon Whiterose

Culture and Translation - S01 E10
After the cut, lots of thoughts of bullying and betrayals. Also, me trying to get through these quick before season 2 starts dropping.
CLIP 1: And now, for a lot of thoughts on bullying
¿Con las clases empezadas? (“Mid-term?”): Nora asks Eva something like, “with school having started?” I reworked it as it sounds awkward.
Es que no me entra nada (“I have no appetite”): Eva says something like, “I can’t get anything inside.” Again, no one says this in English.
Okay, so when this clip dropped, there were some discussions on twitter. Firstly, as someone who has attended high school in the US and Spain, I don’t believe Nora would be nicknamed Joan of Arc at an American high school. I don’t think Joan of Arc is that well-known of a figure that side of the Atlantic. Joan of Arc is a fairly recognizable figure in Spain because she is a Roman Catholic saint, and Spanish culture is highly influenced by Catholicism. In my opinion, a person like Nora, living in Wisconsin, would be called a SJW or a snowflake or something along those lines. The issue is, Spanish people don’t understand what those nicknames would mean. They would, however, understand the nuances of getting called Joan of Arc.
Then there is another issue. Nora says, “I swear that, in the US, being a freak is a lot worse than here.” That raises some questions, because the kind of bullying Eva is victim to, is actually really serious. I believe she has it the worst out of all the Evas. To recap: She has been abandoned by all her friends except for Nora. People are talking about her and pointing at her. People throw notes at her, and she is the victim of 24/7 cyberbullying, which involves a picture of the Eva/Cristian kiss and defacing the pictures posted to her ig. This has been going on for around a week. Tyler Clementi, to name a notable victim of cyberbullying, suffered under similar circumstances.
So, since Nora is speaking from personal experience, how severe was the bullying she suffered in Madison, the bullying that makes her say that, “in the US, being a freak, is a lot worse” than what Eva is experiencing. Some viewers felt that Nora was minimizing the bullying Eva was going through, as Nora only mentions namecalling, being nicknamed Joan of Arc. Spanish teen viewers (the target audience) felt that Nora was exaggerating what “being a freak” is like at an American high school. That is because Spanish teens’ knowledge of American high school comes from, you guessed it, TV shows and movies. In particular, a movie that was brought up in the comments to the clip was The Perks of Being a Wallflower. When this movie was dubbed for Spaniards, the title was translated as “Las ventajas de ser un marginado” (Perks of being marginalized). Now, you will agree that being marginalized is a lot stronger than being a wallflower, and so that led to the impression from certain viewers that being bullied in the US is a glamorous affair where your best friends are Ezra Miller and Emma Watson, you eat cannabis brownies, drive through tunnels for the aesthetics and go to school dances.
In short, this clip attempted to broach the topic of bullying in the US as compared to bullying in Spain, to an audience who has no real references of what American high school culture is like, outside of American popular culture. And to do so, they gave an unrealistic example (American students using Joan of Arc as a demeaning nickname), failed to explain why Nora would feel that bullying at US schools is “a lot worse” than what Eva is experiencing (which barely holds up as an argument, as what Eva is going through has led students in the US to grievous harm), and led more educated viewers to wonder about the extent of the bullying Nora went through. And while bullying at American high schools is an important topic, should that be a topic that Skam ESPAÑA deals with? Is it relevant to the average Spanish teen’s experience? Personally, I feel like the writers may have bitten off more than the show can possibly chew, with this narrative choice, which informs Nora’s character as it is her backstory.
On a lighter note, Nora compares Eva to a dog, which should imply her stance on dogs isn’t so hard-line. The word she uses, “galletitas,” can mean a number of different things in Spanish. Generally speaking, “galletas” are cookies, but they may also be biscuits, salty crackers, or yes, dog food. I went with “kibble” to keep to the dog-related teasing.
Again, the characters suggest that Eva talks to her mom, but she doesn’t. As I mentioned, this is generally true of Spanish teens (we aren’t a hivemind after all), and more specifically, of bullying victims. One of the biggest issues about bullying in Spain is that victims take up to a year to tell their parents.
CLIP 2: Learn English with Skam España
Okay, so this is definitely more about the effects on bullying than culture or translation anymore. Is everyone in that library talking about Eva? At this point, it no longer matters for either Eva or the viewer. The bullying she has gone through so far has made it so that both Eva and the viewer now feel paranoid that everyone is talking shit about Eva while Eva is present. Maybe those guys are just checking 9gag! But since they took out their phones at the same time Eva got an IG notification, it feels like they are definitely mocking Eva. I thought Eva’s actress was great through the entire bullying arc, and I liked that Skam España expanded on the bullying sl from the og, so that we could get a fuller portrait of the effects of bullying on their victims.
¿Con qué estás? (“What are you studying?”): The literal translation would be, “What are you with?” I.e. What subject are you working on right now.
When did Amira take that Bio test? She’s supposed to be in Eva’s group (we saw her in the third clip and she’s also on the Science track), but of course, that test was all about Eva and Lucas’ friendship angst.
Phrasal verbs are the bane of every ESL student’s existence, Cris included.
No seas plasta (“don’t be a pain in the ass”): “Plasta” is a synonym of “pesado/pesada,” which I already covered in an earlier post. It literally means “flattened mass.”
Me cago en la puta (“shit on a whore”): More pooping! Now we’re pooping right on top of prostitutes! But yeah, that’s the literal translation and, you know, sometimes you want to find the closer English equivalent, and other times, you just want to make sure people understand who or what we’re pooping on this time. Cris is really frustrated with her English skills, so she uses one of the stronger pooping variations.
This was one of the clips that were most fun to translate, for the challenge of translating an English quiz to English.
CLIP 3: Mess
Es que ya hay que tener mala hostia (“You really gotta be a fucking asshole”): “Tener mala hostia” is the stronger versión of “tener mala leche” (literally, to have bad milk). A person with “mala leche” is someone who acts in bad faith, a malicious or a bad-tempered person. The idiom comes from the idea that a mother’s breastfeeding milk can have an impact on her person’s temper or personality. “Hostia,” as we’ve covered, is the sacramental bread used for the ritual of the Eucharist, but it’s used more commonly to mean a smack across the face.
Cris makes a point of singling out the person who first uploaded the pic to instagram. When I link Skam España to people, I point out that they should also follow the social media posts, and here’s the reason. If you follow the social media posts, you already know who first uploaded the picture to instagram. It was Inés. The hate ig took it from her stories, cropped it, and posted the first meme. The sequence of events is clear if you followed the show in real time. However, if you bingewatch the episodes and don’t follow social media, you get the impression that, at this point, how the Eva/Cristian picture made it to the hate ig is a mystery. And also, that whoever uploaded it first (who we know to be Inés) is the one with beef against Eva. And, well, there’s beef of the level of “I uploaded a compromising pic to my stories to be a dick” and beef on the level of “I’ve vandalized all your pictures, turned you into a meme and covertly filmed you at school.”
This confrontation is so odd when you consider that, unlike the og girl squad who didn’t know about the letter written in period blood, the Spanish girl squad suspects the second years of being behind the hate ig. In fact, they know the girls have pulled similar shit before. And, best of all, Cris actually hooked up with one of them, so you’d think Cris’ presence might help matters?
The second year girls have a different Maths teacher. This one is a guy. The girl squad’s Maths teacher is a woman.
I find it funny that Rubén was suspended for three days for fighting with ALEJANDRO, but ALEJANDRO was not punished himself.
I just noticed that there should be an “into” in the sentence, “People are huge assholes and anything can turn INTO a joke to laugh your ass off.” Oops.
CLIP 4: Failing grade in Biology and in Friendship
As noted in the subs, in Spain we’re graded on a 0-10 scale. 5 is the passing grade. Lucas got an 8, which is considered a “notable” grade, but not “outstanding” (those are grades over 9). Eva got a 3, which is well below 5. Much like Isak, Lucas is good enough in Biology that he does well in surprise exams. He seems to be resentful of what this grade might do to his GPA though, lol.
Lucas says that his mom was hysterical after his dad left, but the language he uses doesn’t make it explicit that his mom is mentally ill. The writers may or may not keep this part of Isak’s background. Thought I’d mention that since we know at this point that they have no issues giving the Skam España characters entirely different backgrounds. So far, it’s clear that Lucas’ parents fight a lot and that his home life is massively impacting Lucas’ mood and life, but we don’t know what the fights are about.
¿Para esto vienes de buenas a hablar conmigo? (“Is this why you talked to me like nothing happened?”): “de buenas” is kind of tricky to translate. You can come at someone “de buenas” (good) or “de malas” (bad). If you come at someone “de malas,” it means you’re already on a bad mood when you start a conversation, or you’re angling for a fight. On the other hand, if you come at someone “de buenas,” it means you’re in a conciliatory mood, or trying to avoid a fight.
CLIP 5: Hi privileges
Comiéndoos la boca (“Sucking face”): Inés actually says that Jorge and Eva were eating each other’s mouths. This is a common Spanish idiom, by the way!
El insta es muy jodido (“Insta is a mindfuck”): Eva says that Insta is “really fucked up,” as in, it does a number on one’s mental health. I went with “mindfuck” to get to the point of what Eva means, but keeping the swear word.
Eva asks Inés why she stayed friends with Jorge, but not her. I saw some commentary to the tune of, “why did they add that bit of dialogue? It adds nothing to the conversation, we already know this.” Personally, I think it’s good that they added it, because it’s a good starting point for a discussion, and particularly when it comes to the s2 storyline. Skam has gotten massive kudos for promoting sorority and friendship between girls. However, the s2 storyline is about Noora being forced to choose between her friend and a boyfriend. Vilde never dated William, but the storyline shares some of the same elements: Eva is torn between a guy she likes who likes her back, and her friend who is in love with that guy. So is Noora. Skam offers two outcomes to that scenario. Eva’s decision results in her expulsion from her friend group, while ultimately the girl squad friendship is stronger after Noora’s season.
Inés says she assumed that boyfriends come and go, but that she thought she’d stay friends with Eva forever. Was Eva Mohn right in choosing a boyfriend over her best friend? Was Eva Vázquez (since, thanks to the bonus clip, we know more of how Eva and Jorge got together)? Was Inés right to hold a grudge against Eva? And if she was right to do so, was she right to not hold a grudge against Jorge?  Is it ever okay to choose a boyfriend over your friends?
Again, if you haven’t kept up with the social media, Inés’ apology may seem confusing. It seems like she admits to being the person behind the hate ig, but then why would she not take credit for the meme? The first profile to make a meme out of the Eva/Cristian pic was eva_la_z0rra (or eva_the_s1ut). That’s because Inés is not behind the hate ig. She just uploaded the pic to her stories. I have noticed that people who didn’t keep up with the social media posts assume Inés took responsibility for the hate ig, which is interesting. You could watch og Skam without the social media posts and the story would be exactly the same than if you’d watched it with the social media posts. Social media added characterization details. When it comes to Skam España, you come away with two very different conclusions as to who ran the hate ig, depending on your level of investment (reading and watching everything vs just watching the episodes).
Retirar el saludo (“to snub someone”): This idiom doesn’t come up in the clip itself, but it gives cultural context to Eva and Inés’ conversation. In the course of a day, we say hi to everyone we know that we come across. We don’t necessarily stop and have a conversation, but we acknowledge them with a “hi” or a “how are you doing.” In Spain, we have a specific idiom for when someone’s fucked up and has lost their “hi” privileges. This is “retirar el saludo” (literally, “to remove the greeting”). Through the conversation, Eva seeks to get her “hi” privileges back, and eventually Inés agrees she will say “hi” to Eva when they see each other at school/around the neighborhood/at parties or botellones. It doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll stop to talk and catch up, but Eva now gets to be told “hi.”
Social media:
Cris turned 16 this week! I love that the writers specifically picked her birthdate so that it would fall on a day where the girl squad was still broken up. Needless to say, people were very salty in the comments, heh.
I’ve liked the way Skam España has referenced the og with similar social media pics, Kose Club, and song choices. Referencing songs from the og on insta is actually clever as it helps them circumvent music license issues, lol. That said, I think naming the Spanish girl squad after the og girl squad name Las Losers would be far too much. I hope they leave it at that, just a reference on a text update.

What’s up gamers!!! Our fourth episode plowed through the chaos of thanksgiving holidays and is Here w/ some Facts and Opinions about creating shit and being LGBT and how being LGBT influences creating shit. HEADS UP we recorded this while I had a cold so my voice is probably a little off, but ik Isaac put SO much work into the editing so it would be ready on time and we have recorded statements from some amazing artists (transcriptions under the cut below!) & this is honestly one of my favorite episodes we’ve done so far, so give her a listen if you’re gay or enjoy fun things!
BIG thank you once again to everyone who participated in this month’s episode!! Your contributions are so valued and so beautiful!!

Aaron’s 2018 November Recs!
Alok Alok Vaid-Menon is one of my favorite poet/activist/performance artists out there! Their writing and stage presence is gorgeous and witty in a way that’s SO clever and still feels like you’re in a room trading jokes you don’t need to explain with your closest trans friends. The way they balance their art creates a real, deeply touching experience that feels very essential to our world.
Miles (2016) Miles is set in 1999 and is a coming of age story about a gay teenager trying to get a volleyball scholarship for college in Chicago. It’s not revolutionary and it’s not over the top dramatic, but it’s funny and honest and it makes me feel nice. Definitely the movie to watch when you’ve just been through something emotionally taxing and need a light crying session and some mediocre pastries.
Isaac’s 2018 November Recs!
The Adventure Zone I know half of you already kin the Mcelroys while the other half either don’t know or don’t care, but the Adventure Zone is one of my most favorite things in the world. It’s a DND podcast (yes, all episodes are transcribed, and they have a graphic novel for the first arc of Balance with a second one on the way!) by three brothers plus their dad, and not only does it have the most amazing story and is ungodly funny, but TONS of gays (Griffin went ape with those Lesbian NPCS)! And just because they can! Same with trans characters. It’s a story where they just exist, and that’s really important to me because in a lot of media LGBT have to almost prove why they deserve to take up space. And it’s not just something that goes on in their first campaign, Amnesty also has those sweet sweet gay! I could talk about this podcast for hours, so if you needed that final push to give it a listen, THIS IS IT!
Stardew Valley You get to farm and be gay. And if THAT hasn’t sold you on this charming video game, then maybe the super cute graphics, beautiful soundtrack and a handful of interesting characters will! TBH I spend so much time playing this game it’s concerning. It’s just such a fun way to relax, and I just really REALLY like video games were I can chose to be gay. Like. God Tier. YOU CAN HAVE CROPS AND CHICKENS AND BE GAY C’MON YALL!!
The Amazing Quotes And Artists Featured!

“My identity as a bisexual woman influences my art in many ways. As a woman, i create art about the issues that effect me, such as abortion and gender equality, in order to resonate with the people that matter most to me. As a bisexual individual, my subjects often appear from a gaze that falls outside of the stereotypical eye. My figure drawings and portraits all come from a place of admiration, and don’t fall into the stereotype of the male gaze or womanly care- they are the space inbetween, equally sexualized and normalized. I feel lucky to be a bi gal in the art world because it is a place that is my own to create in. There are so many queer artists that i look up to such as Mapplethorpe and Warhol, and many female artists i can cite as influence (Jenny Holzer, Kiki Smith, and Louise Bourgeois to name a few). My identity gives me a whole new world of content to draw from and allows my work to resonate with a wider audience, and I really think that any artists goal is to reach and touch as many people as possible.“
Cameron | twitter | instagram
“I don’t think that it influences the form really, but it definitely influences the subject matter! (Much as I hate to admit it, my identity influences the majority of choices I make in life.) I write a lot of poems about lgbtq related things and religion, as well as other stuff too. I was raised catholic, so realizing that I was “different” at more than one point in my teen years was scary AF. Being a member of the lgbtq+ community and also trying to still feel like I belong, or wanting to, in a religious community is hard, the two things are usually at a crossroads in my life so writing about them makes it easier for me to get through. My hope is that someday someone reads what I wrote and finds some peace in their own life/experience.”
Vince | art instagram
“Well, being transgender I feel like I’m constantly aware of the lack of representation of my community, and I feel like it might be because of that I tend to experiment with showing all sorts of different type of people in my work. Because there’s so much diversity in the world, why not showcase that?”
Fox | art instagram
“Oof…I’m gay so my characters always be gay. Gotta Fill the void in media w my own bullshit so I don’t have to rely on straight showrunners who will inevitably discard the character since they themselves seem to have no personal attachment and treat lgbt characters as disposable extras. Bc if I don’t at least attempt to create representation in the field I’m going into then I can’t rlly complain about the lack of it right? If I don’t try and change it I can’t complain about the lack of change so being an lgbt artist is lowkey Big Pressure to be revolutionary in your work but sometime…..I just wanna draw funkey animeal and that’s aight too”
Jen | twitter | instagram
“As a female bisexual poet, I worry often that my poetry and art will be too niche to be appreciated. I’ve spent years editing my poetry down to its barest bones in hopes that someone will relate to it. Changing pronouns back and forth because I worry that if I do talk about a woman, the poem will be stripped of its context and suddenly be about my queerness when in reality it never was. When I write about love and people I have dated and have crushed on, I want the poem to exist outside of the gender of who I love. I fear my authorial death will result in a complete misinterpretation of what I mean. When I write, it truly does not matter to me if I am writing about a woman or a man. If I feel what I write and I can make someone else feel it too does it matter that I also love women? I write what matters to me overall, regardless of gender, I try to make my poetry as true as possible. Sometimes, when I catch myself over editing I try to take myself back to the moment, to the person, what I loved about him or her. “
Lain | art instagram
“My LGBT Identity has significantly impacted almost all of my art, especially my work over the last two years. Ever since I have allowed myself to accept that I am trans and began my transition (6 months on T!), the impact that my Roman Catholic upbringing has had on my bisexual trans identity has bled into my artwork. Because of the way I was raised, accepting and allowing myself to be authentic has been an upward struggle. And what better way to process and document struggle than art?
Much of my recent work has had a focus on the trans body, particularly the “sanctity” of self-actualization and the god-like power that comes with accepting and creating yourself in the unique and exceptional way that LGBT people must in order to live authentically. Two of my pieces on this topic were actually recently exhibited at UWM in the Trans-lucent exhibition, and will remain there until December 15th (I think). I got sick and tired of never seeing trans representation, so now I am creating that space that I crave in my own work.”
Kobe | instagram | soundcloud
“My art from is very influenced by my LGBT identity. It is very influenced by my LGBT black Identity. I think that whenever an artist makes their art (in my case writing music, singing, dancing) they should incorporate as much of themselves as possible. I think my LGBT identity definitely adds a sense of representation as well. I want people like me to listen to my music to know they aren’t alone. So it influences my work a lot. “
Nat | art instagram
“I think the fact that I am part of the LGBT+ community influences my art directly. Even though I don’t draw as often as I wish, I believe both my drawings and college projects (I am a 3d art/animation student), and my creativity in general is inspired by my personal experiences as a gay woman and common things experienced by the community. I try as often as I can to bring representation of some kind in the things I do, mainly personal projects. I also feel that it influences me on my motivation to keep creating; whenever I listen to, see drawings, watch movies or see whatever form of artistic expression from LGBT+ artists it gives me the energy to keep going, to keep creating.”

The women and veganism post  Though I think many people are expecting a post outlining why I believe women shouldn’t go vegan, that isn’t actually the case. I don’t care if you’re vegan, want to become vegan, etc. I also don’t believe it’s impossible to be a healthy vegan. And I feel I need to toss the disclaimer on even though in none of my posts have I advocated against individuals choosing vegan diets, instead focusing on why veganism for humanity is, I believe, not a sustainable nor more inherently ethical diet.
The history of much of vegetarianism is tied to religion, with vegetarian diets supposedly more religiously pure diets. Though a number of religions have had leaders advocate for vegetarianism, such as Buddhism, my studies and my audience are mostly Western, so it’s a more Western framework I will work within. Vegetarianism is also found consistently through the history of Christianity. As Aaron Gross, a Ph.D professor of theology stated, “‘One of the most striking things one discovers in comparative religion is that the potential moral danger of meat eating is a major theme across religious traditions’” (x). In Christianity, this can be seen with traditions of vegetarian monks, vegetarian Christian leaders, and the abstaining from meat during Lent. In the Bible, only once Eve committed the grave sin of eating the apple, did humanity begin eating the animals. Therefore, not only is consumption of meat tied to humanity’s impurity, but to Eve’s failings. Women are responsible, in Christianity, for the consumption of animals.
Never having recovered from original sin, women in the Christian church had to work harder to make it into heaven than men. During the Middle Ages, we see the rise of anorexia mirabilis ("miraculous lack of appetite"), which referred almost exclusively to women and girls who would starve themselves, sometimes to the point of death, in the name of God. Two of the most famous of these fasting girls, Mary of Oignes and Beatrice of Nazareth, both claimed to vomit from the mere scent of meat alone (Fasting Girls, Joan Jacobs Brumberg). Anorexia mirabilis was frequently coupled with other ascetic practices, such as lifelong virginity, flagellant behavior, the donning of hairshirts, sleeping on beds of thorns, and other assorted penitential practices. It was largely a practice of Catholic women, who were often known as "miraculous maids". With their markedly sinful bodies, these women refused food, mutilated their breasts and hips, and inflicted other pain on themselves in order to become ‘more pure.’ Although today, devotion to God as a reason for limiting diet is no longer popular, women have substituted a body marked sinful because of women’s weakness derived from Eve for a body marked sinful by body fat. Although I’m not saying that veganism is an eating disorder, a simple good search of ‘why should I go vegan?’ returns page after page of results that highlight that veganism will help you lose weight, banish cellulite (a female secondary sex characteristic), and get rid of lower tummy pooch. Get rid of your marks of gluttony. This is especially true with raw veganism pages. When you click on videos made by vegans, you stumble upon videos like this (x) where the video host uses the words ‘clean’ to discuss the vegan food and how she feels cleaner eating her raw vegan diet. Veganism is still tied to purity with this emphasis on ‘cleanliness.’ Clean eating turns up instagram accounts of vegan (and vegetarian, though they often post a lot of vegan recipes) social media influencers who promote how ‘clean’ they feel and how ‘clean’ the food is. Sometimes fish gets a pass on being impure (a similarity with Christianity).
The focus on clean eating (and the secondary benefits like ‘detoxing your body of toxins’ which your liver does anyway) reaches religious fervor. How can you tell? Many ex-vegans, especially popular bloggers, when they come to decide veganism is no longer for them, they post these incredibly long posts about why they are no longer vegan, many saying they feel run down, have low iron levels, hypothyroidism, or blood sugar control problems. One blogger, coming out as no longer vegan writes: “My body started craving the “bad” stuff. Namely, meat.” (x). When attempting to exit veganism, some popular ex-vegans have received death threats and hacks (x), (x). When purity ideology leaks into diet choices, especially when applied so aggressively to women (I haven’t found death threats and comments to the same degree with male ex-vegans, in fact didn’t see any), then this is quite coercive. For women looking to leave veganism, this backlash can be incredibly harmful and could keep them vegan even if they are feeling sick while being so. Stop moralizing food - it perpetuates a culture extremely detrimental to women’s health (which is what we all want anyway). On the topic of health, vegans and vegetarians like to cite the Seventh Day Adventist study on longevity as proof that vegetarianism and veganism increases lifespan by about ten years. Yet, when compared to the Mormon Longevity Study, there is no significant difference. The Mormon study finds that Mormons, who as a population eat more meat than Adventists yet have the same strong community ties, focus on spirituality and family, and abstaining from alcohol and smoking, have a lifespan of 9.8 years longer than the average American (x, only easily accessible source though many popsci articles will cite the 10 year number for adventists). Therefore, it appears that meat eating is not the tragedy to human health the Adventist study appears to demonstrate. Additional studies used to support vegetarianism and veganism, like the China Study and the Seven Countries Study, have been proven to have extremely poor study design (x), (x). So a vegan diet can be healthy, but the connections to purity, the ideological fervor and anger at ex-vegans, and the weak science backing veganism as a panacea need to questioned, especially because 79 percent of vegans and 59 percent of vegetarians are women. I have too many oreo and chikin strip gobbling vegetarian and vegan friends who firmly believe that just because they are getting adequate grams of protein and supplementing with b12 that they are being healthier than meat eaters (and let’s all admit to the popular ‘unhealthy vegetarian/vegan facebook memes we’ve all seen). Of course the standard diet of the Western world isn’t healthy - there are so many oxidized fats in fast foods, too many calories, and too much sugar - but that doesn’t mean that moving to a whole foods diet is less healthy than a vegan diet. Make the choice that works for you, but please remember on a class analysis scale that nothing, especially something so important as diet and so dominated by women, is above criticism. I don’t buy that women are vegetarian/vegan at higher numbers just because women are more compassionate/health conscious than men and I don’t think you should either.

All of the best 2018 Met Gala looks
The Met Gala has long been known as fashion’s biggest night. But this year, it’s fashion’s most controversial as well.
On Monday evening, all of Hollywood’s biggest stars and fashion influencers took to the carpeted red stairs of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art to celebrate the Costume Institute’s latest exhibit. This year, Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination explores the intersection of the sartorial and sacred. In the exhibit curated by Andrew Bolton, pieces from the Vatican and design houses such as Dolce & Gabbana, Versace, and more will be on display. However, on the red carpet, a variety of celebs are wearing their own interpretation on the religious theme.
Amal Clooney, Rihanna, and Donatella Versace are 2018’s co-hosts of the event alongside Anna Wintour. Other A-list attendees include Kylie Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Cardi B, and Ashley Graham.
Follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter for nonstop inspiration delivered fresh to your feed, every day.

( cierra ramirez ; she / her ; cis-female ) livin’ in the sprawl can be interesting for sylvia moreno . the twenty-one year old is a music student living in a campus dorm when i met them , they seemed kind of creative , but also kind of adventurous . who knows what they’ll be like ?
aesthetics : pleated tennis skirts worn with leather jackets . bubblegum . coca-cola flavored lipgloss ( specifically , cherry ) . fast 3 a.m. drives with the windows down . ripped fishnets . defending pop punk . neon lights . adrenaline rushes .
what’s up , i’m bibi , i’m 21 & i never fuckin’ learned how to write good intros !
alrightalrightalright , this is my gal sylvia and she’s .... well , she tries her best
so she’s born / raised in black sheep . how depressing , right ? i know . her parents , sofía and antonio , met when they were twenty back in the ‘90s . both black sheep natives & hated it , but neither had the means to leave . so they didn’t . instead , they got married three years later in ‘93 , and a year later had their first child : a son named santiago .
when santiago was three , a new addition to the growing family was added : sylvia . born in ‘97 on january 20th ( aka the capricorn-aquarius ‘ cusp of mystery and imagination ’ ) , she was far from the perfect baby , but that didn’t stop her parents from caring any less . they were ecstatic to have a little girl .
needless to say , the baby photos are ridiculous and sylvia never wants anyone to ever see them ‘cause the fashion choices were very fuckin’ questionable !
by the time santiago was six & sylvia was three , their mother gave birth to the final moreno sibling : another boy , francisco .
this makes sylvia the dreaded middle child , but honestly the middle child trope doesn’t apply to her ?? both parents were as loving as could be for raising three children in a cramped suburban home in this shitty fuckin’ town . the family solace ended up being church , for sure . as both sofía and antonio have always been p devout roman catholics , they brought up their children in the same faith . all children have been baptized , have had communion & were confirmed .
it was a strict upbringing , no matter how warm the atmosphere was , plain & simple . this is partially why sylvia is so reckless and overly-adventurous ; she wants to experience everything she can , no matter if she gets hurt in the process . always the kid with scrapped elbows , maybe a bloody nose , and dirty bruised knees --- prompting her mother to continuously have first-aid in the house & when they went on the go ( which , wasn’t too often , but regardless . )
sofía and antonio still work at the church they frequented ( and still do frequent , work or personal reasons . it’s also the church they met in & eventually got married in ! talk ab history , huh ? ) ; francisco’s only finishing high school this year , he’s so unsure of what he wants to do . santiago , on the other hand , got out of this hell & went to fresno state / craig school of business to complete his bachelor's degree from an aacsb . he also served two extra years of professional work in that time , and is currently doing full-time mba at ucla on a scholarship .
yeah , it’s a lot to live up to when it comes to business boy santiago . ofc the moreno parents are extremely proud of their eldest & they’re lenient of their youngest ‘cause hey , not everyone knows what they want to do at such a young age .
but then there’s sylvia , middle child & only girl . and she’s always loved music , and she’s always banging on pots & pans & whatever other usable surface / object she could find around the house to drive everyone else crazy , because she didn’t realize how awful it sounded at the beginning . she remembers her first set of drums when she was ten --- wasn’t even hers , honestly . was one of her cousins , a christmas gift gone to waste because he didn’t even use it . so eventually , they decided it would be better to just let sylvia take it .
they soon enough invested into drum lessons for her around her eleventh birthday , ‘cause it’s been like a year since & they knew she wouldn’t stop drumming away whenever she could , and her love bloomed more -- much to her parents’ dismay .
although supportive of their children , sofía and antonio wish sylvia took her life & education more seriously --- “ why couldn’t you become a nurse or something... less fickle ? ” // “ you won’t get anywhere with music , mija , please think ab your future . ” // “ we just want what’s best for you . ”
which is bigger bullshit than this awful town !
sylvia never told them what exatly she was going to college for , all they knew is that she was going . long story short : they were v upset she “ selectively told the truth ” ( because she didn’t tell them anything , so it couldn’t’ve been lying ! )
anyway , yeah . she still plays drums and she’s gotten hella good at it . also in between , managed to take some singing lessons ( singing at church wasn’t ever enough for her , honestly . ) ; she’s rooming with jade vandermeer , & they’re bff honestly alongside sage wells & nessa belfrey !! we stan iconic girl gangs . her & jade have a lot of jam sessions .
sometimes , said jam session is at 2 a.m. etc which annoys the fuck out of the others in the building , oops !
sylvia will make multiple playlists for friends , a real spotify queen
instagram hoe af , catch her modeling & posting videos all the time
despite her passionate focus on music , when sylvia was in high school she was actually captain of the girls’ volleyball team
to this day she still considers herself to be roman catholic , however it isn’t as intense as it was growing up now that she isn’t directly under her parents’ influence anymore
here is her pinterest board !!
a true ride or die . she would lit put herself on the line for someone important to her , no questions asked sort of thing
probably programmed her siri to call her ‘ bubblegum bitch ’ once or twice , but then undid it because it went off in public & that’s just embarrassing
defends pop punk a lot more than one might think though !!! but like , wow does she stan lana del rey lmao what a fuckin’ aesthetic icon !
uhhhhh idk what else to write ...... mayb some wc ideas :
some exes / good , bad , mutually ended , etc . ( open to m/f/nb . )
friends with benefits ? no strings attached sort of thing ! ( also open to m/f/nb . )
music friends !!!!! friends in general anyway lmfao who am i kidding
maybe sylvia babysits someone’s kid or pet for some extra cash ??? she still a college student , the grind is real .
party friends

Vegas couple implicated of taking $13 million from Medicaid
Las Vegas couple Timothy and Latisha Harron were charged with seven crimes in connection with their declared defrauding of the North Carolina Medicaid system.
Then, according to the Justice Department, the couple washed the money through their purchase of pricey goods, consisting of a $900,000 private jet and fitness center equipment.
See Expert’s homepage for more stories
A Las Vegas couple is implicated of running a years-long scheme to defraud North Carolina Medicaid some $13 million that they supposedly washed by buying a consortium of luxury products, many of which were shared on social media.
Latisha and Timothy Mark Harron dedicated “huge scams” on NC Medicaid by billing the government for “fictitious house health services,” according to a Wednesday press release from the Department
A federal grand jury voted to arraign the couple on May 19, according to the Justice Department.
According to the DOJ, Latisha, 44, founded Agape Health care Systems, Inc.– a supposed house doctor– in 2010 in North Carolina. She committed scams at the beginning, the DOJ said, when she signed up the company with NC Medicaid without divulging she had actually previously been convicted of identity theft.
Timothy also had a prior felony conviction, which was likewise not revealed to NC Medicaid, the Justice Department said. They continued their supposed fraud and billed NC Medicaid for over $10 million between 2017 and 2019, according to the press release.
According to the Justice Department, the couple supposedly searched through obituaries to discover individuals who had actually recently passed away in North Carolina. Utilizing information from the obituaries, they would turn to the NC Medicaid eligibility tool to find whether the individual had a Medicaid Recognition Number. Using that number, they back-billed Medicaid for “fictitious services” it declared to have actually provided before the individual had actually died.
In posts made to Facebook and Instagram, Timothy showed off he and his partner’s lifestyle, often posing for photos at dining establishments, on holidays, and submitting photos of their high-end goods.
” Wow, what’s the event?” one person commented listed below an image that revealed a minimum of 27 boxes from Tiffany & Co.
” This is a normal event for us,” Timothy reacted.
In another Instagram post, Timothy shared a picture of what seemed the couple’s private jet.
” Not too shoddy!” he wrote together with a list of hashtags that consisted of “#billionaire,” “#millionaire,” and “#luxurylifestyle.”
” Honesty begins with you & inside you,” he wrote in December 2019 post.
” Another great dining experience in the books,” he wrote.
Harron’s social media likewise links to the site for a book Timothy Harron composed, called “El Guero.” “El Güero is a story influenced by true life occasions,” according to Harron’s website. “Raised by devout, Irish Catholic moms and dads, T-( the primary character) believes he has only 3 life options: police officer, clergy or scoundrel.”
On both of their particular LinkedIn profiles, both Latisha and Timothy claimed to run a business called Assured Health care Systems, though the LinkedIn page for the business likewise describes the company as “Agape Healthcare Systems.”
Expert’s efforts to reach Assured Health care Systems via telephone number listed on its site for areas in Las Vegas, Connecticut, North Carolina, and Virginia were not successful, as the numbers were either out of service or were forwarded to a voicemail box that was declining messages.
The Assured Health care Systems website stated it was founded in May 2001, though the company was not signed up with the Las Vegas Secretary of State till September2018
The representative told Expert that Latisha was represented by the Federal Public Defender, who did not right away return Insider’s demand for comment.
” This case represents one of the most brazen and egregious cases of house health Medicaid scams ever seen in this district,” United States Attorney Robert J. Higdon, Jr stated in a statement.
