reread Ekleipsis bc I got some very nice comments on it and wanted to revisit it 2 years later and u know what?? I think it still holds up p well! There are slight typos and parts I wish I could’ve lengthened, foreshadowed more, or gotten Deep into the lore/characters abt, but considering I was busting out a chapter a day and had it done in a dang month I do think it’s pretty good as a lil story!! Would love to do more art for it or revisit the world in some way some day. Babies first real Big Original work 🥺 in my mind it’s still kind of the first draft version, but I’m still proud regardless… ❣️

I think it'd be cool to do mermay, cuz I want to compile the drawings in a zine! Plus I've always viewed mermay as the easiest art challenge month. You just draw pretty girls (if that's your preference, obviously you could be more creative with it if you want) and then the posing is super easy, cuz you don't have to bother drawing their legs. You can just get reeeeal lazy below the waist. But I wasn't vibing with the official prompt list, and I didn't really want to use someone elses… I figured it would be more fun to get other people involved!

SO! Please comment with a one word prompt! I'll be compiling all the submitted prompt words at the end of the week (Saturday) and pulling from a hat one word for each day of May.

Absolutely NO promises that I finish this. Holy heck. You should know by now that I am not reliable. Also I absolutely will be fudging the whole "daily" thing, I'll probably start drawing the prompts in april, and finish them in (hopefully) june. I just really want to do this, and I'm not going to be a stickler for the timing of everything. You know dang well I have commissions n stuff to work on too.

I honestly don't know if my chibi are chibi anymore. This keeps happening lately. Is this what they call "your art style finding you"?

5/16/2024. Drawn in Platinum Preppy fountain pen, using Noodler’s Ink. No pencil underdrawings, so mistakes cleaned up digitally, in Krita. Colored with Copic markers and ShinHanArt Touch markers. Digitally added bubbles from a previous drawing. Assembled some elements in Krita.

Please forgive me. The math in the thought bubble is nonsense. I don't remember any math. So the thought bubble is a collage of things I transcribed from Google searching math equations.

I've been feeling a little bad that I haven't been drawing Ballister's robot arm (during Faebruary, and so far during MerMay), when his robot arm is such a big part of his character. During February's drawing challenge, I couldn't figure out how to make a robot arm make sense in a fairy AU's worldbuilding. During this month's May drawing challenge, I initially didn't know how to make a robot arm make sense in a world of mermaids either. But honestly, it was also just easier not to draw his robot arm. And MerMay usually inclines me towards being lazy, since I don't have to draw legs or clothes, so skipping the robot arm again was too tempting for my laziness. But, no. HIs robot arm is important. I should learn to draw it from memory. And I'm sure someone else can think of a reason for how a merman (or tiny fairy-Bal) could get a robot arm. Someone else will figure it out. I just need to draw it. It's an important part of his character, that I should practice. I was almost tempted to go back and draw a robot arm on top of my Bal-mers from MerMay 2024 days 13-14. But I'm reluctant to risk messing up some perfectly fine drawn chibi arms. So I started drawing mer-Bal with a robot arm, with this drawing of him with Nimona, since he canonically has his arm by the time they meet. I can just pretend my previous mer-Bal drawings took place before his arm was cut off, since those were drawings with him happily beside mer-Ambrosius, as if they didn't have any kind of falling-out yet.

The Owl House Mermay Marathon: Huntlow (6/6)

Welp, I'm sure this isn't a surprise to any of you who follow me. Finally, it's Huntlow's turn, ending this marathon with my absolute favorite ship in the show.

Fun Fact: I drew these in order from the ship I liked the least to the ship I liked the most. Made the process more fun in the long run.

This one is definitely my favorite one I've drawn, and no, it's not because it's huntlow. I just feel like this one I drew the best.

Willow was a nice change from how I drew pretty much every other mermaid. And its all because of her body size. I have drawn Willow as a mermaid before, but I feel like I didn't do her body size justice in those old drawings. Part of this is I originally drew more Willow mid-sized to match how they drew her in the show, but over time, I slowly began drawing her bigger on purpose to celebrate her body type. (Body postivity is very important!) This is especially prevalent in this drawing. I drew her tail to be shorter and fatter, and made sure to give her some belly fat. I also decided to draw her hair down instead of the braids because I felt like that would be more practical for being underwater. Also, it allowed me to play with underwater hair physics a lot more.

Moving on to Hunter, he was definitely the most complicated mermaid I had to draw for this marathon. (Darius being the second.) And it was because I had to figure out how to incorporate his new scar map into the tail and fins. I have also drawn Hunter as a mermaid before, however, that design was much easier because his scar map was much simpler at the time. The notches were easy to design (although it still made drawing him more complicated due to the layer manipulation required to get the notches and the veins to look right.) But the real challenge was the scars on the tail itself. I do have a headcannon scar map I drew of Hunter for referening, but that didn't help much when having to transfer the scar map from his legs to his tail. I pretty much had to guess. I am happy with what I came up with, though. However, that was only half the battle. In the previous mermay, I used the exact same color scheme for the scars on his tail as the scars on his skin, but I decided to be more creative this time and make the tail scars their own color. Finding the right colors definitely took a while, but I'm really happy with how it came out in the end.

I might make even more Huntlow mermay for mermay this year. We'll see if I come up with any more ideas.

Also, fun fact: I was actually planning on doing some of the most popular non-romantic relationships for this marathon, too. Them being Dadrius and labyrinthbros, but I had pretty much no ideas for these, so I scrapped that idea.

I kid you not—I took a nap today and had a nightmare where mermay had ended, so you opened up 3 commission slots, and I had missed all of them by the time I saw the announcement... it was horrible, and you have no idea how relieved I was when I woke up lmao

I'm still extremely amazed with how you've been able to put out a drawing for every single day. And they all look fantastic to boot. Major kudos!!!

I will be a little sad when this month ends, but I also very much look forward to your creative works for this year's pompep week! :D

I'm honestly amazed I've been able to keep up with daily drawings, too. I'm normally pretty bad when it comes to daily challenges. I didn't even commit to doing anything for mermay until the very last minute, and even then I was like, "I'll do maybe one or two..."

I'm definitely learning a lot. I try something different with every drawing, whether it's lighting or backgrounds or special effects or a new tool or technique. It's really encouraging to see my speed improve, too. I started out doing monochrome sketches because that was all I had the time/energy for, but now I can do a full-color rendered piece with background scenery without doubling my work time. It feels good. I was in an art rut for the longest time, and mermay has really helped drag me out of it.

The only downside is I've had to postpone my writing for the time being, but when May is over I expect I'll be refreshed and ready to get back to it. And yeah, I can't wait for Pompep Week, either! I hope some of the new or returning faces I've seen around here lately will join in and really make this event extra peppy :D

Something in the ocean

Sam is scared… terrified even, to go on this trip.

As a child he didn’t like the sea much, mostly because it’s the same place where he almost drowned and died. And it’s where his mom died when he was 5.

He made a solid promise to NEVER go in the ocean or on a boat. Ever. And it’s not really a problem, his dad agrees with those statements, his ‘friends’ and Duncan on the other hand… not so much.

His older brother Duncan had tried helping him face that fear himself, but he ended up comforting the redhead when he cried.

So Travis, his friend showed him the rock pools near his dad’s lighthouse, rocky areas where there are pools of water, told Sam he doesn’t have to go into the water, just to observe the scenery, even draw and paint what he sees since Sam draws and paints with water colour.

And Sam, albeit nervous, actually had fun. Even thought it’s near the ocean he generally had fun, he even saw some puffins near the rocky waters.

He told Travis he loved the rock pool areas and preferred to keep it between themselves. They agreed and it became his secret place, away from prying eyes.

It was great… until it wasn’t.

Before he left he decided to stay at least a couple of hours just to see the puffin’s hopping around, which was a big mistake.

Cause there came a huge wave and he got dragged away by the time the wave crashed. To make matters worse? Tides are strong this season.

He couldn’t swim out, he can’t call for help, he couldn’t even call Duncan or Travis. He was helpless and he can’t breathe... and is so tired of trying.

…

Then coughed and sputters, throwing up some sea water before finally catching his breath. Finally being able to breathe he looked up and saw a VERY worried Duncan and a guilty Travis. “Oh thank god.”

Duncan said as he hugged Sam tightly. “I thought I lost you. I’m sorry, I’m so so sorry!” He rambled, rocking them back and forth rubbing his back in circles. “W-what happened?” He asked before his confusion is directed at himself.

“And why am I drenched?” He asked.

“You don’t remember?” Duncan asked, watching Sam shake his head in confusion. “Travis found your bag when the tides calmed down… then we both found you drenched and unresponsive.” Duncan said voice shaking.

“I-I’m sorry, from now on I’ll no longer push you to going.” He said, standing up and walked off, Travis followed in pursuit.. not even speaking. Sam was about to do the same before spotting something sparkling near one of the pools.

He got close and his eyes widened. It was an abalone shell necklace in a shape of a tragic mask… but the rope’s looks like it’s been snapped.

‘Duncan said never to pick up random things, but…’

With urban curiosity he picked up the necklace and gently placed it in his hoodie pocket. ‘Maybe he won’t notice.’ He thought before having his name yelled out. “I’m coming.”

He shouted before catching up towards the two taller boys. He has a lot to think about, especially about what happened to himself.

He read in the town’s article that this town is famous for having drowned victims regularly in a month. The town never really investigated the causes, even if they did they’d be just as dead as everyone else. Two times he found himself almost drowning… and he survived.

Like… something or someone is looking out for him. ‘Like that would happen.’ He thought, shaking his head and chuckled to himself how stupid thinking about that was.

If only Sam knew… that he might be more right than he originally thought.

hi it's mermay and i'm thinking about sirens. i'm gunna do some looking of my own (at seadragons, probably) but can you think of any fish that look like their tails/features would make a cool mermaid?

Hello! I've actually answered a similar question before, here is my answer to that one:

But since your question is a little different, I'll feature some unique fish species you could find inspiration from!

The rockmover wrasse! Here is an adult, the juvenile is a little wilder:

Eels! Just any type of eel, really. They come in such varied shapes and sizes, and have various abilities too! If you're the type of person who likes to give merpeople the features of the fish they're based on, just imagine a moray eel merperson with two jaws! Or a ribbon eel merson whose tail sways like a ribbon while swimming. I'd suggest looking into eels!

Electric eels too! Despite the name, they aren't actually eels at all, so I'm mentioning their genus separately here. Long fish that sense things with electricity and can generate it, even being able to cause prey animals to stop or start swimming with careful shocks... need I say more?

Here's one that could have many ways to be interpreted as a merson. Stargazers! They're ambush predators that hide in the sand, only having their eyes and mouth showing. I'd like to see how those would be interpreted as merpeople.

Mudskippers! The semiaquatic fish that live most of their lives on land.

Another one that walks, frogfish! Many species not only have a lure, but also walk along the bottom of the seafloor. How's that for an interesting merson challenge?

I don't think I've ever seen a merson who looks like a billfish, as in like a swordfish, sailfish or a marlin. The particular fish here is a sailfish!

I don't see some reef fish often, either. How about a moorish idol?

Perhaps the similarly-shaped butterflyfish?

Oh hey, maybe mandarinfish! That's one colourful guy :)

Deep sea fish are always a treat, too. They look very otherworldly compared to the fish we see often in everyday life! My personal favourite is the barreleye, but any friend from the deep is a friend indeed. The stoplight loosejaw who has a private red flashlight, the cookiecutter shark who sneakily bites chunks off bigger animals, bristlemouths with their large jaws and tiny teeth... I recommend looking into fish that have photophores, aka light-producing organs! They're fish that glow in the dark!!! Extremely cool and mysterious...

Lanternfish are a good example of this, I think. They're thought to be the most abundant group of vertebrates, they're deep sea-living, they have photophores, they migrate vertically in humongous schools that literally look like false bottoms to sonar.

Deep sea anglerfish are a classic, old but gold. Seldom used in merfolk! I've tried tackling anglerfish merfolk myself before, I'll feature my concept sketches below for possible inspiration... though they contain artistic nudity, so I'll only feature them under the cut.

Her first initial concept on the left and some additional ones on the right. Anglerfish of all kinds use lures to trick prey, so I wanted to mix the lure aspect with mermaids to create a siren that lures in sailors with her human half and eats them with her fish half. The human half has working eyes, vocal chords and lungs to first spot sailors, then call and sing to them, but besides that all the other organs are in the fish half. No doubt similar merple exist, but this was my take on it! It's a lot of fun to be creative, I recommend just going with the flow and doing what feels the most natural or coolest. You've got this!

A little UPDATE! (And a WIP of this month's dragon chibi)

Now that Mermay is over, it is time to get back to normal schedule! Monthly digital dragon-related chibi (fanart or OC) and monthly traditional regular dragon drawing. I DID IT!

So long story short I set myself a challenge to complete this mermay art within 24 hours and I did it!

I was so proud of the art outcome I actually made it a video!

I intended to have this out sooner but noticed sucked so 24hrs on the last day of May really helped!

I don’t really have a lot to say other then this is another version of my NK sirens and sailors AU, in this drawing Aaron and Anastasia are talking about how different their worlds are but finding it interesting how many similarities there are also!
