dusty rose spiders! Colloquially known as hitchhiker spiders! Whether or not they’re actually spiders is debated, but they’re Something alright!! They were the first of the bugs (I KNOW SPIDERS ARENT BUGS!!! USING IT AS AN UMBRELLA TERM) to develop humanoid sapience (but at what cost!!! All spidery innocence is lost!) and characteristics, such as larger size, language capability, etc. Because of this they tend to be the most common form of bug-people. The one pictured is a less developed one, not quite at the level of bug-person. They evolved due to an intrinsic desire to be able to create and consume the art and music of the people that they are so drawn to. The changes happened over a span of centuries, but they slowly developed a larger size and, most notably, thicker fur. They used to have the ability to fly for short distances, but their newly evolved thick fur weighs them down. It also makes it harder for them to move around quickly, so they’ve taken to climbing on the backs of people walking by to get around. That’s why they have the nickname hitchhiker spider. Despite their large size they, even in their primal form, as it’s called when they’re not fully evolved, are quite docile. They’re arguably the most integrated into human society when it comes to the bug people

ohhh, that's really cool!! i love when people do that, it's part of why i also wanted to incorporate some of my own lore into my designs. it's so fun and i think it makes designs more recognizable and adds a lot of personality to art!! i'm still actively developing things for it, but i can talk about some things about the species i specifically chose for spoke design, if anyone is interested. ^_^

so, i don't really have like an official name for the species yet, unfortunately. but to try and explain them simply, they are demon-like creatures that closely resemble aquatic animals of all kind. (fish, sharks, sea slugs, octopi, jellyfish, etc.) the can vary from all sizes and they may look more creature-like, or come very close to looking human-like. (like mermaids/sirens) the origin for them is that they're all descendants from an ancient water god, who was also a god of chaos and calamity. when he was trapped and killed during a big war between gods, a cult that was worshiping him attempted to revive him by the means of an ancient ritual, but was not successful, and instead, ended up creating the first generation of said creatures due to a curse that ended up affecting them. one of the main like... antagonists on my story is a shark-based girl of said species. she's a little devious creature, and she keeps messing with the main party just because she's bored. i love her a lot, actually. this is basically what i have so far. sorry i kind of went off on a yap session. it might be all over the place and not really make sense, but like i said, i'm still working on it.

He's got a lot of lore floating around the brainspace that I don't feel like dropping here, but the short of it is that he's a dragon, he's a made up thing called a Noctar (think werewolves that fly and have no particular relationship with the moon). He was chosen to at birth to be the servant of a god (much to the chagrin of his parents who really, really hate gods), he served (possibly dated, and definitely killed) the Ultra-Special Chosen One of a different god, and he even managed to fall into weilding two different (mind-altering?) fire-themed swords (who keeps giving him those anyway?).

Most of them do. Some for good, some temporarily to see their family/loved ones. But for many of them it's changed. Or most of the time, they've changed, and it doesn't feel like home anymore I think Marietta is probably the only one who went back home and still feel it's her home

Stefan however never went back home. Dude saw an escape from inheriting his father's throne and jumped on it at Mach2 speed. He refused to set foot on his old country for centuries until he was sure everyone who could've recognized him was dead, but at this point it was nothing like home anymore. Everyone he cared about died. Including himself

Spartha & Luin are a bit more complicated. Neither of them can go back to their hometowns

Spartha's was lost to time. This is the kind of thing that happens when you're a 62 centuries old daimon raised by humans in a human town And the house he lived in with Luin & Aela is in ruins too after being abandoned for centuries. Only Aela's grave remains

For Luin... Well as said above his childhood home is in ruins, and he was kicked out of elven lands as a child. It wasn't very legal so technically he can come back, but when he does the elves make it clear he's not welcome here

But you know, home is less a physical place than where you belong. And in the end those two belong with each other Their whole story is about this. About Spartha finally bringing his kid back home like he promised so long ago, and about Luin finally coming back to his family

2: An unusual example of the Vanaa species, Nimoo enjoys many human items and traditions, and few more than Halloween. Taking advantage of his malleable form allows Nimoo the chance to dress as festive gourds or a behatted occultist.

3: Despite being a near full body replacement cyborg, Zeke likes to keep most "smart applications" in his head to a minimum. A built in clock is nice for when he wants to check on the oven or the laundry, but he'll turn it off when he's lying down with some dusty old paperback.

4: Paola Feti is a model Navy officer (in a culture based on reputation, rank, and competition). Her skill at dueling hasn't actually proven her correct in any arguments, but it's definitely given her the last word more than once.

5: Madison figured she'd be happy after finishing this new kit, but all she could see are the dozen little mistakes. And they'll nag at her every time she sees it.

(we'll be past 75 characters a day next week meaning I'll be 3/4 of the way to meeting my 100 OC characters a day thread goal, let's a go)

Notes: the full body lineart was partially traced in the hands and feet, and the grid of color swaps and a silhouette was me testing out palettes and design features with help from someone that actually knows how to do that stuff (I’m still not 100% certain of his color palette rn, that’s newer than the colored image)

For a side character he’s super overdeveloped (I like him A Lot…) so getting into his backstory would take a little while lol

My thoughts on drawing wings (an unofficial tutorial)

Do you want to get better at drawing your favorite winged character? Do you have winged OCs? Just want to learn something new? I can't promise this post will help, but maybe it'll give you some helpful tips.

I know, I knowww, wing tutorials have been done to death. I don't care. This was initially inspired by a conversation on twitter, but actually I've wanted to write down my notes on the topic for a long time lol. Basically wings are one of my special interests so it's very important, for me, to draw them both nicely and also realistically.

On that note, let me first show you my resume *distant sound of floodgates opening*

Like what you see? Read on! (Oh, and I will only be covering feathered/avian wings bc those are the type I know best.)

Now, I'm not here to give you a step-by-step guide on wing anatomy and aerodynamics, because there are plenty of other resources that cover this already, and I'll list my faves at the end of the post. Right now, I'm going to give you some easy guidelines and tricks that I wish more artists knew.

1: Wings do, in fact, have bones (crazy, I know) and are actually very rigid because they have to support the weight of a living creature. There are some positions you cannot physically force a wing into irl.

2: Flight feathers are not placed willy-nilly on the wing, because then they wouldn't catch the air properly. Again, like the bones, they are rigid and strong, so don't draw them like fur or ribbons. All wings have the same pattern of feather placement, with slight variation depending on species. If you learn the feather sections, it will automatically improve your drawings a lot.

2.5: Feathers overlap each other like a handful of playing cards, and this looks different depending on which side of the wing you're drawing. They always do this unless they're extremely untidy.

3: The size of the wingspan is important if you're going for a more realistic design. There is no "scientifically accurate" measurement when it comes to fictional creatures, but my general rule is when in doubt, you probably need to make them bigger. Personally, for my original winged human species, I give them wings that can be up to 12 feet long each (the artistic sacrifice is that it's really hard to fit the wings on the dang page lmao, so make your own call).

4: Get used to drawing folded wings. Most of the time, birds keep their wings folded because it prevents them from getting damaged and it conserves energy. The trick is to get good at visualizing how the joints bend and overlap (look at plenty of photos!) In general, they can fold much tighter than you think.

5: Wings and feathers take a lot of patience to draw, but the results are worth it. I've seen so so many incredibly beautiful and skillful artworks that are---well, maybe not ruined, but still negatively affected by a pair of wings that look like an afterthought, or not even like wings at all. You have no idea how much a little extra time and practice will add to your work until you see for yourself.

Finally, some notes on "stylized" wings: Of course it's perfectly ok to draw more simplified/cartoony wings if that's your preference!! BUT there is a difference between a stylistic choice and a lack of effort/poor understanding of the subject matter. Even cartoonists have to learn the fundamentals of realism so they know how to make their designs logical and appealing. Here are some examples of more stylized wings that I feel retain the core principles of anatomy/aesthetics:

I made this pinterest board for general artsy inspo, and this board to curate my very favorite tutorials/refs/information, focusing on the scientific aspect of wings and flight in general. Feel free to use both! (I also suggest pinterest in general for pose refs and such, but try to only practice using photos at first and not other drawings.)

I highly recommend this blog and this blog if you want examples of artists who draw more realism-based winged creatures!! They are both huge inspirations for me and I think you should totally follow them even if you don't plan to draw wings lol <3

If you're REALLY serious about it, my favorite ref books are: Winged Fantasy, a lovely drawing book by Brenda Lyons; Proctor & Lynch's Manual of Ornithology; and Angelus vincens by R. Spano, which is essentially an artbook by someone who (I believe) designed biologically plausible "angels" for their senior thesis.

Diary Entry - 10/15/24

I swam further from the colony than I should’ve the other day. But I don’t regret it. I moved my way swiftly through the deep sea towards the land. I had never been up there - nor had anyone I knew. Growing up, I heard tales of what happened to us when we made contact with the land. Large, monstrous creatures, with rough hands and jagged teeth, were up there lurking. You could sense them coming; with their loud roars and deadly stench, it was advised to stay as clear away from the dry land as possible - these were not creatures you’d want to meet. I had seen glimpses of these creatures on large vehicles that floated on the surface of the water, cutting through the currents. But the vehicles were far too grand for me to see over the sides - I had only gotten a peek of these barbarians.

However, I’ve always been the curious sort. My peers would describe me as a troublemaker - but mischief was never my passion. I simply wanted to learn, and I see no reason why I shouldn’t. Besides, I know what I’m doing. I’m strong, I can handle myself out there. And yet, no amount of hunting or sparring or exploration could prepare me for what I saw that day.

I encountered an alien. At first, only seeing her top half, I thought she was one of us. A lost mermaid stranded on the beach. I rushed over, ready to warn her of the dangers of the land, of the treacherous monsters that lived up there, until I saw her fully. She was no mermaid, no creature of the sea at all. Rather than a nimble tail, there were two long limbs attached to the bottom of her hips - crossed over each other while she sat. Her skin was a shade somewhere between the most blinding white and purest black - evening out to a beautiful earthy tone in the middle. She was a mix of tans and browns, with her eyes darker than her skin and her hair darker than her eyes. In terms of color, the girl was very plain - but that made her all the more special in my eyes. She looked as if she sprung from the land, letting the soil of the Earth paint her body on her way up from her roots in the ground. Land. Soil. Earth. All things that I had never seen before. Her body was a mix of textures. She had skin like mine, but un-littered with scales that aid a smooth glide through the water. Her hair seemed to be soft like mine as well, but it flowed longer than any hair that sprouted from merfolk heads. And there were accessories on her;  large fabrics made of cotton and leather draped across her frame, shielding most of her body from the surrounding elements. Oh, she was gorgeous, wasn’t she? Truly a remarkable creature. I was so blessed to meet her on that day.

I know I shouldn’t. I know it’s dangerous. But I want to see her again. I know there are evil creatures up there, but she wasn’t one of them. And if someone like her, who looked so fragile, was able to lounge around alone with no worry, I assumed that all was safe. I wonder what her species is like. Are they all solitary, or did she wander off just like I did? Was she even a female, or was my perception skewed based on my experience with my own people? If this gorgeous bipedal creature is common up on land, I must return soon. I promise myself that I will steer clear from the monsters, but I cannot contain my interest in this new world. I must go back. I will return tomorrow. I hope she is there.

You at some point said that you wanted to change some of the backstory of Verna regarding his relations with Grizzco, to better reflect his position and purpose at the company with the new rotm and potential Splat3 dlc lore. Now that we have everything, have there been some finalized thoughts on the subject?

currently with my OCs I'm a bit stuck. I have this whole huge plot I've been trying to work out with how Cress and Verna reunite and get into some... Wacky Misadventures (they are going to have a bad time. together), and come out of it more understanding of each other....all this takes place prior to the start of Splatoon 3, and Grizzco is involved in that story so i cant really work out what happens to Verna during Splatoon 3 until all that is worked out...augh.

oh god i accidentally wrote too much about how grizzco works in my splatoon OCs setting. under the cut

How I've basically worked it out in my setting is that it's as if Mr. Grizz doesn't even exist. Well, he does, but...you can NOT convince me this literal mammalian bear is micromanaging an egg collection operation a few hours away from an underground cavern, all while building a spaceship, repairing alterna, and doing god knows what with fuzzy ooze? his voice from the radio is pre-recorded. He's just in the background trying to get his golden eggs for his stupid mammal revival plan. Grizz is pretty paws-off with the actual operations of the company. In order for Grizzco to operate like an actual company in the Inkling world, Mr. Grizz needs connections within the Inkling world. He needed to hire people, and lots. contractors to pilot the boats. the helicopters. people to repair them when there's issues. contractors to set up the grizzco building. people to maintain it. Supplying and maintaining weapons. Who put the statue there? Remember when grizzco would actually close its gates? someone had to be doing that. Advertisers? Sales of eggs? Do you really think Mr. "Does your species even have bones" Grizz is doing all that? No. So how would Grizz get these connections? I think ORCA could've helped out in some way with scouting some people online or with Grizz's business knowledge being an all-knowing AI. ROTM sure does a great job explaining or even implying anything about the relationship between those two. /s. But ORCA still is just a virtual entity, and you'd need a physical representative for some things, right? Anyway this is where the Judds come in. I think the idea that Lil' Judd being Grizz's initial way into the Inkling world...sucks. That's probably what the Splatoon team is going for and I do not care, the timeline on that does not make sense. Grizzco was introduced to us, the players, in April 2017. At this point the egg baskets are all installed, and there are Inklings in-universe partaking in egg collection....Lil Judd was born only a few months prior. I'm sure it would've taken a while for grizz to get everything together to establish this company. To me it makes more sense for Judd to have involvement. He's the only other mammal, and the one with all the power. (not only do i think the implied canon timeline sucks, in my OCs canon, i've had it established that grizzco has existed in some form several years before s1 so...) I wouldn't think Judd would know about the mammal revival plan. but like, Judd lets Grizz set up because he's looking out for his fellow mammal, and saw the kind of energy benefits this would have….also more salmon meat, yum. Judd canonically has numerous connections in the Inkling world, even to world leaders. He could use these connections to allow for Grizzco to set up business and give that permission to operate in the restricted areas where Salmonids live. Beyond this I have a hard time imagining Judd getting too heavily involved. Like once some other people are hired to do some more micromanaging of the company Judd kinda dips. Lil judd doesn't get involved until some years later and takes more direct interest in the company. With permissions granted and Grizzco operating as a defense against the Salmonid army while also providing power eggs, then grizz could do whatever he wanted so as long as an amount of money and eggs went into the Inkling world. And eggs are the primary source of income for Grizzco, so this part is very important. I think very early on Grizz would've had to personally deal with the sales of eggs to get the money to get the company started...maybe selling to octarians even? But for some real business dealings in inkopolis, youre gonna need some representatives in-person. anyways remember when this post was about my OCs. So I'm making a Grizzco board of directors, and they're the ones who actually maintain the company and the things in it while Grizz is busy in Alterna. Even the directors don't really know about Grizz's mammal revival plan, they just supply him with golden eggs and turn a profit for the company, by whatever means necessary.

After spending quite some time at Grizzco and becoming more trusted as an employee, Verna gets to know some of these directors. Some become his allies, and some are a bit more unsavory... He starts spending more time with some of them especially after his salmonid encounter, and they'll have a role in Cress and Verna's story. I've had some of these guys bouncing around in my head for years. some of them have art that im sitting on. i wish i could share more but I am Not done cooking </3 so to answer your ask in short. yes I have finalized much of the things with how i have grizzco functions in my OC's setting, and im basically ignoring the existence of grizz himself, in the same way that grizzco as a company runs completely normally even after grizz basically dies in ROTM. but at the moment, i do not have all the details finalized with other people at the company and how verna interacts with them
