It is so frustrating I have so many things I want to draw at all times but usually when I finally have time to draw anything I am not really enthusiastic about any of my ideas anymore. I want to draw 2 things a week not 2 things in 3 months.

It's been forever since I posted art here, and I probably won't make a habit of doing it again, but...

It is July the 4th, and that means that today is the 10th anniversary of the first drawing I posted to deviantArt. And posting to deviantArt for the first time is what really and truly kicked me into doing art all the time, and trying to improve at it.

So, this drawing is a redraw of that.

But a little history. The first time I drew Dialga was actually an art request in 2011:

I did this on a not-art-website, and I didn't even know what Dialga was at the time, really. But I liked the drawing.

Then a few years later, I had gotten into pokemon, and I played Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, and I really really loved Primal Dialga. The color scheme, the soundtrack... it's so good. So, I drew Primal Dialga... and I posted this to dA on July 4th, 2014.

Someone left a comment saying it was cool, and that was enough to inspire me to draw a bunch more things and start posting there in spurts. 6 months later, I took tracing paper and fineliners, and made a clean lineart of the above drawing that I could add color to digitally.

I was trying, but whoof this one is rough 😂

Anyway... here we are, 10 years to the day from that second drawing, the first Primal Dialga I did. I've learned a ton, I've grown my skillset, art has opened all kinds of doors for me I didn't realize it would open.

I made a timeline of my art journey, as well. I don't imagine this is going to display well on Tumblr, but, well... view the full size if you can.

It's been an interesting 10 years. Here's to another decade!

Y'all remember the OG mermaid AU? Where the grandkids were mermaids who grew their tails when they were in water and they kept it a secret from Abuela and when she found out called them sea devils so they disowned her and the candle turned into a glowing pearl in a shell? It feels like it's been forever since we got anything from that AU

It's been a while, but uh. I really did like that au. It was actually originally only meant to be posted in may. But it got popular outside of that; and then that lead to other mer/underwater aus lol

I remember someone, pretty sure an anon, ended up suggesting the candle turn into a pearl??? Idk if I ever said it. But. I know I did mention Isabela was the one who stole it, and she wanted to get rid of it. And everyone knows that fire goes out in water (in most cases), so she thought that the best thing to do was to put it in water. Of course, it didn't go out. It just turned into a shell.

NO BUT SERIOUSLY. Ummm I've thought about if the candle can adapt to different environments. I mean it's confirmed that you can't like. Blow the candle out or anything, I mean it loses its magic when the family is beefing and stuff 😭 and by technical means in this au, the kids didn't have such distant relationships because they all had something to bond over, which was being mermaids 🙏🙏

Anyway, Isabela tried to take it out in the water, but it didn't work. Isabela didn't have ill intentions towards her family, or really even the candle, it was more of a spur of the moment action. It's not like it's first degree or anything, something happen that day to cause her to just randomly decide to take it out.

The candle just. Adapted to the water. And since Isabela was touching it, it turned into a shell. Opened it, boom, it's a magic pearl now 💀 Alma obviously sees it, but she thinks Mirabel did something to it cause at the time she say it, homegirl was holding it. Isabela came to her defense, obviously. Idk if I wanna make it to where they figure out that the candle would have done that if any of the kids held it.

Honestly wanna do more for the original version of this au. Just gotta figure it out 😭 Will definitely be redrawing their designs 🌚🌚

This is just a whole AU at this point. There are a couple under the split I tossed together for funsies. I mean these are all for funsies but you get the idea. They're down there because 1, they don't fit and 2, one of them is very spoilery of the comics.

But yeah, I've obviously been having a lot of fun making these. I'm thinking this'll be the last batch cause I don't wanna do screenshot redraws forever, especially not with the TOTK stuff coming up. It's those and then hopefully I'm done for at least a year. Best-case till next season.

my thoughts on finishing AFR (tumblr version)

Firstly, thank you all so, so so much for reading.

5 years ago, on February 19th, 2018, 2:24 PM I posted the first AFR comic. I drew it thinking it'd be a nice little project for a few months, and then I'd move on. Little did I know it'd become a huge passion project and something that's brought me many, many tears and laughter. It's been a journey making this thing, I can easily say I am hardly the person I am when I first made this. I've learned so much about myself, the world, and what I wanted to say in comics.

AFR didn't become a serious project until I realized Asriel and Chara's story hit home to me and I realized I had something more profound to say than just "heehee silly ut comic where siblings squabble." Now it's become a story about growing up, and the life after the "happy ever after." What does it mean for "everybody to live?" well, you live. You suffer. You cry and laugh and it's everything you want and you fear. You wake up another day.

It's no secret that Chara and Asriel are heavily based on myself. Every OC and every character I can put my grubby little hands on have been influenced by me. Yun's excitement for monsters, Mew Mew's loud declarations of frenzied thought, Hol's quiet, head-in-the-clouds nature... the list goes on. Knowing the characters now, I'm excited for the redraw as I can paint their stories from start-to-finish properly. It pains me more than anything I can't just say "here's a finished product, fully and forever." But one step to getting there was finally finishing the tumblr version. So even if I were to die, or lose my ability to draw, I can say: I told my story. I made it real. It's messy, incomplete, and not at all what I aspire it to be, but it's here. And that means, so, so much to me.

Never again will I be accepting story asks. Never again will we see what crazy thing Asriel and Chara are up to in their journey into adulthood. While the story will continue to develop, it has it's ending.

I've grown, a lot. I started this when I was 21 years old. I've had a on/off relationship, I've learned I'm neurodivergent, I've moved out of my abusive dad's home. I've had so many jobs in that time. I lived through the pandemic (not that it's over) and I've made and lost (out of touch) friends along the way. I am Sam. I drew AFR. I still have so much left to do to make it fully realized but I did it.

And in that time people have offered me grammar and spelling corrections. Advice, suggestions, fanart. You've sent like, I can only imagine to be at least a thousand asks in this amount of time. You guys have been a huge part in this comic being made. Even as the story moves more and more away from the "Ask" part of the title, you guys made it so much more fun, thought provoking, and exciting.

So while my minds a bit scattered and I'm kinda jumbled up, I just want to say with every bit of myself: THANK YOU!!!!!

I understand if many of you don't choose to stick around for the redraw, I'm more than thankful to anyone who's read this far (or heck, just one tumblr post is enough. I feel seen.) and if you so choose to stay, I look forward to sharing a million more little moments with you. ^_^

5. A female villain you love?

This question is strangely hard cause I have to debate with myself if morally complicated conservative women count or not, because a lot of the complicated women I like AREN'T placed in an explicitly adversarial position to "the heroes" (nor do the things I like tend to create that explicitly dichotomy of "hero" and "villain") and I still haven't been able to determine the answer to that-

But like- Plutomon Digimon Survive is a villain no matter how you slice it so uh- her. I can't say too much on her for Spoiler Reasons but Plutomon Digimon Survive is a Character of All Time can I get an Amen!

(I Mean I'd Love to put a character like Natushi here but I'm really hung up on the definitions here as you might notice.)

8. A minor female character you love anyway?

I was going to jokingly say that none of the things I like have women as Just minor characters but then I was thinking about it and I was like "Wait.....what media do I like (That I think about often) that has women in minor roles?" so I settled on Reverse 1999 Eagle since she is a minor character in story and has Very Little Going On outside of her ancedote focus:

I bet anon was asking for a character with actual like- 2 minutes of screentime but the truth is I simply just don't think too much about characters like that in general. If I do I tend to turn them into OCs since like...at some point they do just become my OC and I''m not going to be like "Oh this is the actual canon version of the character" when I've just written them as OCs. Plus my memory is shit so I really do need something to latch onto.

Keiko RGU might count though?

I find her really fun and interesting in the Black Rose arc since she's coming right after the most emotionally involved of the Black Rose Duelists (Wakaba) so you have a really nice duality there of Wakaba being Utena's best friend while Utena doesn't even know Keiko's name.

Oh and Rei!

She's great as well! I love whatever horrific situationship she had with Muu and how Muu thinks of her as like- a beautiful hero and puts her on a pedestal while simultaneously hating her for "not saving her." Okay maybe I do have more options for this than I thought-

13. An interesting femslash ship? (Canon or otherwise)

I was going to put a Yuri is my Job ship here and then I realized that I don't....consider any of those "romantic" ships like- to me Sumika and Kanako is a QPR, same with Yano and Hime- like those are complicated and nuanced relationships and I love them but Sumika and Kanako are textually Not Romance.

While for Yano and Hime it seems like Hime doesn't feel romantic attraction but a genuine sensual and sexual attraction towards Yano like- aro but not ace. Does that count for the purposes of this discussion?

The definition rests unclear, and I generally just ship situationships forever, but I do have one that isn't horrifically complicated- which is my friend keeps on telling me that apparently Eva and Natushi from Umineko have toxic yuri going on and Im like-

hey c, do you think it's still best to draw out ideas we really want to draw so much now but feel like it's still way too out of our current skill level? what do you usually do when faced with this feeling while thinking of ideas to draw? do you end up simplifying the idea to fit the current skills you have, or do you do the best you can do at the moment?

it's sad that i have so much fanart ideas i want to draw but the skills required seem too high for me to reach, and i feel like it may end up looking rushed and badly drawn than if I waited it out a bit until my skill level would catch up.. but more often than not, when it does catch up i end up losing interest in the ideas that i could've been able to draw better now :'D *pensively looks at my several written wip ideas that i never got to actually sketch at all*

Back when I was still a noob I just tried my best to materialize whatever I had in mind, I knew it wouldn't turn out well because of my lack of skill, but I felt like if I just stayed in my comfort zone forever I wouldn't be able to improve. There are many of my old art that had amazing concepts but poor executions but I just pushed it through eventually. If I think it looks bad then that means I know where I'm weak at and I can use that information to improve my art. (I'm sorry for putting an old drawing on your dashboard I just wanna give an example, like this art looked cool in my head but when I attempted to draw it it looked so bad)

It's frustrating, I understand that and I've been there, but trust me that NONE of your efforts is meaningless just because your current skill level makes it impossible to realize whatever cool ideas you have in mind 😭 Just remember that you can always redraw it anytime when your skill is more honed so it's not a waste in the end!

I cannot tell you how many minutes I‘ve just Looked At That by now, and for how many more minutes i will look at it in the future. 1 - when and how did you get into hermitcraft?

I'm actually a pretty recent fan. I got recommended Lizzie's Last Life POV in April I think? It was completely random and I wasn't into MCYT at all but I remembered watching Lizzie as a kid and it was like 3am and I couldn't sleep so I was like why not and then my life literally changed forever.

I had to, completely unhinged, BEG my friends to watch this stupid ldshadowlady series that had the best storytelling I'd seen in anything ever with me. @kanohirren recognised Bdubs and Etho's names and we got curious so we watched their POVs as well. Cue "he loves me" and now neither of us are the same.

We ended up also watching 3L and DL and LimL when that came out and needed extra dosages to keep us going so we ended up watching Etho's Hermitcraft 7 (Shad-e-e's!) and various Hermitcraft 9 videos (mainly Pearl, Scar and Ren). I've watched a little bit of season 8 as well so I know about the whole moon big thing.

So yeah this is cursed but hermitcraft is basically my "they're all alive and well and happy and not dead" copium fanfic for the life series.

Sidenote he's not a hermit but I listened to screw the nether maybe too many times as a kid and lost it a bit when i realised it was the same martyn.

ummm uh just to machine gun fire a few there's luminousslime's buttercups, applestruda's gem and doc (and basically everyone else), hybbart's tango, jay's gem has won my heart, lunarcrown's hels!bdubs and hels!etho are maybe cheating but i care them and so has basically any interpretation of bdubs as a small (evil?) creature. First example that popped up in my mind was kanohi's accursed gremlin.

In terms of my own designs my style's gone through a bit of a shift recently so I've actually been meaning to redraw everything 😭😭but from what I've done so far I do really like my Pearl and Bdubs.

23 - what was your original opinion on hermitcraft/a hermit? did it change?

For MCYT as a whole tbh I used to be kind of a hater 😭😭 as someone who only really watched the occasional captainsparklez ig i didn't really "get" roleplay and all the fanart and stuff that was everywhere when DSMP was popular. +the whole character vs CC stuff.

((note here I don't actively dislike DSMP because I never got into it and wouldn't know I just choose not to interact with it out of my own reasons. I don't mind talking abt it or seeing it and so on))

I always knew hermitcraft existed but again I wasn't really into MCYT as a whole so I didn't think it would really be my thing ig?

-> heisei generations forever (officially non-canon to the main timelines of both build and zi-o, though still a good enough homage to build's main story with a decent amount of ryusen) -> build new world: kr cross-z -> i heard the idol otaku is dating his fav special (basically just kazumi/misora nonsense from what i've heard, unfortunately) -> build new world: kr grease (i saw that you weren't keen on both new world movies as most build fans i know also weren't esp. bc of the het shenanigans (+ the weird evolt stuff that i've heard kinda feels like it's invalidating we already saw/learned in the main show, and it feels more like they just brought him back because they were milking his sheer popularity as a kr villain) that are apparently pretty typical of v-cine movies when compared to heavier gay coding in the main shows, sadly, so you can also take a page out of those other fans' book and not consider the nw movies canon or only cherrypicking the elements you like, but wrt the banjou stuff in cross-z specifically, i don't think him and yui are meant to be an unambiguously canon couple the way kazumi/misora and gentoku/sawa became in grease, as you can see a clear difference in how romantic both latter couples acted (even if i don't like both lmao, though i tolerate gentoku/sawa more than i do kazumi/misora simply bc i think g/s has funnier scenes than k/m, even with gentoku's unnecessary sexual proposition towards sawa in ep. 1 back when he was evil) vs. b/y, and also just the way banjou treated kasumi, his only 100% clearly canon girlfriend, vs. how he treated yui up to the end of the movie, and the girlfriend/date/best match comments in the movies seem to feel more like just jokes/trolling in hindsight (esp. since the b/y "date" at the end was literally just them selling stuff *sento* made, like something something sento is always somehow involved with banjou and his girlfriends, or 'girlfriend' in yui's case, so... lol. anyway), and also banjou appears to blatantly check out a shirtless killbas before they find out about him being the villain so ig the bi-coding was technically still going strong, plus the fact that yui just straight up disappears in grease which is supposed to be a direct sequel to cross-z and just isn't mentioned in any way (on which i have some bts info to spill btw, more on that in my next message) while sento and banjou continue to act like partners as usual, and in fact get paired up in a way that sets them alongside the pairing up of k/m and g/s in the same movie - so tl;dr: aside from the fact that we can just straight up ignore those movies, i don't think we have to worry about the yui stuff as a genuine invalidation of ryusen's romantic subtext-that's-practically-text, though it's still unfortunate they tried to pull this shit in the first place even if ultimately very half-assed and halfhearted, and you just kinda have to laugh at the audacity of doing all that *after* banjou made his little speech about sento being his hero, like you said)

-> kr jeanne and kr aguilera with girls remix (a revice spin-off included here on a technicality bc of sawa's presence, along with female characters from a few other kr seasons both in the heisei and reiwa eras alongside the titular female riders who i think i've told you before are the first major example of a lesbian-coded pairing in kr, though iirc they sadly also get hit with some plausible-deniability "they're like family/sisters" comments here though not really in the main show) -> kr outsiders (basically fanservice cash-grab slop from what i've been told that essentially is a suicide squad-esque project where various villains/evil riders from different seasons are assembled to battle a bigger bad guy, and evolt and misora are there in like a couple of episodes so 😔) [4/?]

as for the stuff ive watched, i finished the main eps first and then went for basically everything i could find that i knew had the build charas/story involved, so the only stuff from everything u mentioned that im missing are the 4 eps from zi-o, the revice spinoff, outsiders and the stageshows. i was thinking of leaving the crossover movies for later at first but then i also didnt wanna wait for if/when i watch ex-aid or zi-o so i just went for them (esp since u mentioned banjou chara development for one of them which i was Rlly curious about) and i enjoyed both, non-canon as they might be akfjdksf.. i think ill check out those zi-o eps but i probs wont watch the whole show (yet at least)

but yeah it rlly was a rollercoaster holy shit that entire final arc in the show was fucked up and evil?? in the best way possible??? i was crying literally the entire last three eps help ... the silly little rabbit w a death wish was too real...... i def saw what u meant by the end bit being weaker but honestly it didnt feel too bad to me, it probably wouldve been better executed if they had more eps to work w (which ik are strictly consistent for every season) + those actors that werent able to film, but i feel like for what they had to work with they did a rlly good job bc i was still hooked and Invested(tm)

also the rogue spinoff like i went in already liking gentokus chara a Lot after seeing the whole story so i was biased but i think they showed his desperation and spiral into insanity (? if it makes sense) rlly well there, it was def a lot more brutal but somehow i ended up liking the fight scenes in there more than the main story ones maybe bc they didnt have much of the cgi? either way it was a good insight into gentokus past/chara (and a little bit of takumis too who i always like seeing) and now i can Genuinely put him in the 'poor little meow meow who killed people' box so yay :) my silly shirt man i care him :)

then theres the new world movies which.....sigh......... Yeah............ those sure were movies ......... the comphet honestly didnt even bother me that much bc im so used to ignoring when writers pull shit like that (tho the whole banjou/yui thing did give me a fic idea in a way that i started outlining afkjdksgj) but the way they just undid the entire logic of the new world with the point of it being that its entire existence is only possible w evolt and the pandora box no longer existing is just. 4. Fav character/subject that's a bitch to draw

Honestly? Humans as a whole, still. I started art a long time ago, originally mostly focusing on animals and creatures, til I started drawing humans sometime in middle school - and I never stopped drawing them since! But yet, somehow, even though by now I probably have drawn more humans and human-adjacent characters than not with all those years, beasts are still much easier and come more naturally to me. Maybe those very early years wired my brain this way hbghb

8. What's an old project idea that you've lost interest in

Oh holy fukc so many of those uuuuuuuh,, right now the one that comes to mind is this old story I had made up in middle/highschool - something about a kind of death land, a sort of limbo, and the ghost lords that 'ran' it; and the main character having to go through it to bring his love back from the dead (orpheus and eurydice inspired). And though even then I wasn't particularly optimistic about my chances of going through with it, I really wanted to make a comic of it! Obviously, never happened. I should redraw those old OCs one of these days hgbghb

9. What are your file name conventions

I've been meaning to change it cuz it's no longer organized enough for my taste! My file themselves don't have any fancy names, they're usually just named after their subject (like 'demoman_sketch' or 'pernelle_portrait' or 'morribel_reference' etc). Of course, no accent in the file names since that renders them unstable and makes it easier for them to get corrupted, same (to a lesser extent) with spaces, so I always use an underscore instead.

So rather than by name, my organization goes by folders: • First off I have a folder per art program (one for Photoshop, After Effects, Corel Painter, Krita, etc), each of which have two folders, 'Unfinished' and 'Finished'. The latter usually only has the PNG renders, while the Unfinished folder houses the PSD (or other) files. Sometimes I'll have a 'Done' subfolder there for the files of pieces that i've finished, but most of the time they'll hang in there in the middle of WIP files forever • And in those Un/Finished folders, I have subfolders for the subject of the art piece (one folder per fandom (like TF2, Rayman, etc), a folder for commissions, one folder per original story, etc) so I can easily find what I'm looking for.

I plan on changing my naming conventions though, keep my folders but name my files with dates at the beginning (year/month/day), then theme (fandom/story/commission, etc), and then the piece's name.

30. What piece of yours do you think is underrated

I'm... Not sure? 🤔 To be honest I post my art to share it but I don't really have expectations regarding its reception from the public... I used to! Back when I was on deviantArt. And honestly it sucked, getting legitimately upset when an art piece didn't get enough digital attention, not enough internet points. But I've grown past it years ago, so I don't really have many feelings if a piece does badly anymore. I've had OC pics get like 2 likes and nothing else and I felt fine with it ghbgh

Don't get me wrong I still want them to do well, I still want people to reblog my art, and nothing brings me more joy than comments in the tags because that's a direct reaction to my art, which always feels very personal and legitimately touches me. But not having expectations means I don't really feel disappointed as much

The last time I've had the thought 'oh i expected this to do better' was for my HLVRAI zine piece, but that's about it!

Ahh you are so sweet I'm not sure how to properly articulate how much your words mean to me. Thank you so much, Ophelia. I really enjoy analyzing the characters, the world, the series in general, so it's incredibly gratifying to hear that others enjoy reading them as well. They're pretty long, so sometimes I wonder if I should set a word limit for myself (like 500-600 words) to make it more palatable to everyone else. But I also really like sharing as many of my thoughts as possible, and I so frequently exceed the limit. All that to say I'm thrilled you enjoy one of my main contributions to the fandom !!

Hearing that I'm an integral part of the fandom is surreal (/pos)!! I think a few others have said it in the past (someone once said that I was keeping the fandom going through the content drought, another that I was one of the main people posting, etc.) but it never ceases to blow my mind. And the fact that I can enter fandom spaces I've never been in before and see my name mentioned before I was there (like on the discords) by people I've never met.

As for my writing and art, thank you! When it comes to writing there's so many possibilities and I love taking advantage of them when trying to tell a story. That's kinda how the wings au spiraled into such a huge story, as I couldn't resist taking advantage of all the little things. There are several scenes and plot things I never had any intention of writing, but then I (or someone else!) noticed a bit of potential and I turned it into something bigger. One of my favorite things to do is use words to describe things in ways they aren't supposed to, breaking the rules essentially. Things like warm sounds and broken air, just trying to find new ways to convey stories and paint those vivid pictures.

For the art, also thank you!! I haven't done as much recently because I've been focusing on the wings au, but when I'm done with it I'd love to go back and redraw some of my older pieces and compare them. it's so much fun to create art for the series and share it, so I'm glad you enjoy them. I actually have two pieces in progress right now of a certain two characters who recently made the cover...
