Just wanna say for those of y’all who came into this fandom late: just a few years ago, speaking on Jiang Cheng with anything less than glowing praise used to bring so much harassment that “angry grape”-related tags had to be created to circumvent jc stans finding and subsequently dogpiling your posts. I’ve since seen this tagging convention appropriated by his stans to be an “affectionate” petname for his character. If you wrote a wangxian fic in which Jiang Cheng did not appear, your fics would get bombarded with stans flooding your comments with their own headcanons on why Jiang Cheng isn’t around but “this is how he’d react if he was” and “everyone loves him, they’re definitely thinking about him, rn” and “when is he supposed to show up, op???” If you read a wangxian fic and Jiang Cheng did appear, there was a 95% chance that you would have to slog through thousands of words of abuse apologia paired with every character (except maybe Lan Wangji, maybe) claiming that Wei Wuxian deserved to be abused and should just learn to handle it better because abuse is really love. It took me a year of reading purely (only, exclusively) wangxian fics to find a single fic that had both 1) canon Jiang Cheng and 2) did not twist the other characters into fanon iterations to justify canon Jiang Cheng’s abusive behavior. When more canon writers started appearing, their fics got flooded with negativity, claims that the fic wasn’t realistic because “jc isn’t like that,” and demands to change things. They started moderating their comment sections. Eventually, jc stan writers even stopped tagging Jiang Cheng in their fics despite writing him as a major character because people began to avoid reading fics if they knew from the tags that his character appeared.

The “canon jc” tag was created on tumblr because jc stans said that if we didn’t like being attacked for canon opinions we should “create our own tag.” It was not a tag that always existed. Nobody used it until my friends created it. And every few months after that, we’d get a new “flood the tag” campaign by jc stans pissed at the name until it died down… until twitter refugees arrived, bringing with them a new faction of jc stans. That jc appreciate week or whatever they call it that starts on Halloween? Created by jc stans in an attempt to flood out Wei Wuxian appreciation posts on his birthday by making sure that new Jiang Cheng content would dominate all the major tags on that day. I watched the creators brag about that.

One BIG fandom upset happened when a jc stan wrote a horribly mistagged rape and murder wangxian fic and had their friends promote it so that wangxian lovers would read the fic and be traumatized. They gloated about having "successfully baited people," then tried to delete their tweets admitting it when they got them in trouble. I was there for that, too, and I only dodged being triggered because I saved the fic to read for later instead of cracking it open immediately.

Some of y’all may see me around now, but I’ve been watching this fandom for much longer than I’ve been making posts, before even the friends and mutuals I know now even knew I existed (yes I was a lurker lol). I’ve seen the development of all this play out across tumblr, ao3, and twitter (despite my best efforts to avoid the twitter side, that’s how ubiquitous it was). That’s how inescapable it was. I saw so much shit go down that I already had a mile-wide blocklist before I made my first post, and even then, I still got hate commentary on some of my posts the moment I dipped my littlest toe into metas. I had anon off for like a year because I didn’t want to deal with any harassment, and the moment I turned it off, I started getting bait anons (though not as bad as the others I’ve seen, holy shit). When I started this blog, all I did was liveblog and reblog other people’s art and metas. I was so stressed entering this fandom because the shit I had seen off rip was absolutely disgusting. That’s why I have very intentional rules of engagement that I try to hold to for myself. I may never be the first to start the fight, but I damn sure will defend myself and my friends. I also will never run away from admitting my mistakes, but I will also never be bullied into treating someone’s personal fantasies as equal to the actual factual text.

This isn’t to say that fanon enjoyers don’t get harassment. Another big fandom scandal was that a popular fanfic writer obsessed with canon had been harassing other writers through a series of bot accounts into leaving the fandom. What a lot of people don’t bring up in their bid to paint canon enjoyers as particularly prone to “fandom bullying,” however, was that the “canon” they were obsessed with was tied almost exclusively to the canon wangxian’s top/bottom sexual dynamic. I’d read that person’s works before—enjoyed them, even, before the scandal happened. They wrote fanon into their fics in other ways. The fanon/canon divide isn’t the problem; entitlement to unanimous fandom praise and recognition is.

There’s nothing wrong with enjoying canon or fanon, nothing right or wrong or morally superior for either camp. But do me a favor: go into the main jiang cheng character tag right now, and count how often you see a post about Jiang Cheng that portrays him in a negative light. Not one that portrays him as an snarky asshole or a teacher’s pet or a helicopter parent or a crybaby who only wants to be loved, but one which shows him in all of his uncensored glory as a piece of shit antagonist. How often do you see fanart of Jiang Cheng that isn’t “best jiujiu” or “sad didi” or “badass sect leader”? How often do you see metas that don’t include some iteration of “everyone is just so mean about poor little jc who just didn’t have a choice in anything he ever did 😢”? Go to the main novel tag and do the same. Hell, go to the wangxian tag and see what you find while you’re at it. How many of those posts are viral compared to “look at jc with his dogs!” or “look, I made lxc and jc kiss!” Then tell me whether or not you believe that jc stans are being specifically targeted for some unique and undeserved persecution by the fandom at large.

It's basically story, where Wei Wuxian transmigrates from modern times into cultivator setting, summoned by mistake, by his counter-part here and basically hijacked their body? In cultivator setting, Wei Wuxian was also known as a Yilling Laozu - ancient and mad with grief over Lans killing his husband few hundreds years ago. The present Lan Wangji is reincarnation of said husband, but due Yilling Laozu Wei Wuxian not letting him go, he couldn't properly reincarnate or something? Like - he is still man's husband, Lan Wangji, but a little bit different and that stops him from falling in love with YL WWX?

(There was also something about how this Wei Ying was summoned, because Lan Wangji from that universe probably died, before they had a chance to meet.)

Anyway, after getting (i think?) stabbed by Lan Wangji he got taken to Cloud Recess, then he somehow winded up in Lotus Pier, growing close with Jiang siblings. Also, Wei Wuxian from the modern times was some kind of doctor or inventor (?) and he tried bringing some modern solutions there.

17. For fic finder, I remember it was a multichap canon dovergent wangxian fic with inventor wwx. Tho I am not sure if that tag was used. The most notable part of it was Madam Jin bringing evidence of jgs putting his lot in with wrh complete with bills, transactions, correspondences etc. Jgs tries to discredit her by being a misogynist. That's when madam Jin uses a wwx custom binding spell on him and then says "I am a quick study when I want to be" to wwx and then she says "thank you for your instruction" because she learned the spell from jzx who saw wwx teach it to jc in cloud recesses lectures. A) It was a post-sunshot campaign au..I think someone basically heard wwx getting yelled at by jc and flinching away from his touch. That gives rise to rumours that jc is sexually abusing wwx. Everyone starts pitying wwx and it comes to a head at some sort of banquet..?

B) A post-canon wangxian fluff fic. I think it might've been a 5+1 sort of fic but im not sure. There was one particular scene where wwx is just hanging out with other lan spouses and they are all complaining about their husband but wwx is silent cause lwj treats him really well..After he says so one of the women say "how long will it take your husband to realise if I kill you and take your place?" To which wwx replies "like right away"

Sam’s wearing a green plaid shirt today. It’s distracting. You're supposed to be listening to Dean and the theory of what creature you're hunting. But it's all white noise because Sam is wearing green today. 

If you were more poetic, you could have described how it made his kaleidoscope eyes brighter. You could have likened it to a forest of evergreens, alive and fresh, or Autumn nipping at Summer’s nose, tingeing the edges of green leaves with brown. But you can’t find the perfect description because Sam is wearing green today. 

Your nose is stuck in a book, but your eyes are locked on Sam. The white noise fades, and his voice comes into focus while he counters Dean’s theory and offers his own. You also have a theory, a mixture of both being correct. But you can’t voice it because Sam is weaning green today.

Dean’s phone rings, and he steps away from the table to answer it. Sam glances over at you, and though you know you’re staring, you're unable to look away. He offers the softest smile as he stands, probably feeling extremely uncomfortable under your watchful eye. But you can’t stop your ogling because Sam is wearing green today. 

You follow his movement as he walks to refill his coffee mug, going as far as turning your head to look over your shoulder to keep your gaze trained on him. The shirt looks soft, and you're momentarily jealous that it gets to caress his skin all day. Does it know how lucky it is? You chuckle to yourself at how ridiculous the thought is. But it makes total sense because Sam is wearing green today.  

Fresh cup of joe in hand, he turns back around, his eyes immediately landing on you. “Why are you staring at me?” he asks, self-consciousness dusting his cheeks. It was never your intention to make him feel uncomfortable. But you can’t tell him that you can’t take your eyes off him because he’s wearing green today.

You shrug and give an unconvincing lie, “No reason,” even though it’s clearly causing him concern. You make no attempt to stop your peculiar behaviour because Sam is wearing green today. 

Sam’s chuckle morphs into a bashful dimpled smile as he approaches you slowly, never taking his eyes off of yours.  “I love you too.” He bends and kisses you, firm but sweet. Thinking About JCS Too Much, Vol. 1: "Jaded Mandarin" - Lost in Translation?

Intro

In my second attempt at an introduction for this blog, I pondered aloud, "Ever wonder if you’re too big a fan of your favorite piece of entertainment?" Suffice it to say, that is far from the only time that thought has crossed my mind.

You see, unlike many faded celebrities attempting to jump-start their careers afresh by "finding religion," I followed the opposite path. I don’t remember hearing about God, Jesus, or anything like that before a certain age. I was about 4 when I first started becoming aware of religion. Something related to Christendom spawned a cover story in Time magazine, and they had this beautiful traditional artwork of Jesus on the front that caught my eye. I became obsessed with religion in general, and the Christ story in particular. (Even today a lot of my extracurricular reading is devoted to religious fiction and non-fictional religious studies, and the shelves of my film collection are strewn with biblical epics, both Old Testament and New. I’m by no means invested in the Abrahamic faiths -- in fact, I'm now an avowed atheist -- but I won’t deny that I’m very knowledgeable about them.)

This obsession led me to Jesus Christ Superstar, and so my life as a show biz professional, and my switch from a special interest (yay, spectrum!) in religion and the surrounding scholarship to one in a single telling of a story that happens to deal with religious subject matter, began.

Naturally, this has led to a few embarrassing incidents of over-thinking where I nerd out just a little too much, primarily from a literary perspective. (Case in point: my answer to a recent question posed to this blog about the lack of a detail from the biblical story in the show. Did I need to go "all in" on whether or not Jesus was actually prophesying that Peter would deny him three times by the time a rooster crowed? Probably not. Did I anyway? Oh, c'mon, you've read it by now, don't make me relive it.)

So, in a similar vein, I'm going to periodically write about those moments where I nerd out too much, in hopes that my immense nerdiness will maybe give someone a deeper understanding of the show, even just a small part of it. You've seen one, thanks to an inquiry from an anonymous fellow fan; after the jump, here's another.

Translation vs. Adaptation

Among the many unique features of JCS, it was one of the first musicals of its kind to be widely adapted into the local vernacular when presented internationally, rather than merely importing an English-language cast as the custom used to be.

Besides its mother tongue, JCS can (theoretically) be heard in:

German (anecdotally, it has been reported that the German translation is not the best, which is why many productions in German-speaking countries opt for the English instead; however, that might be about to change, as the production at the Luisenburg Festspiele Wunsiedel this summer is supposed to mark the debut of a new authorized one -- we'll see how it goes!)

Hungarian (there's two Hungarian ones, actually)

Japanese

Polish

Portuguese

Romanian (in a translation recently debuted in, of all places, Chicago)

Russian (there are several, both official and unofficial; we will deal with all of them today)

Spanish (both the European variety and two Mexican ones)

Swedish (at least two that I'm aware of, the original and whatever Ola Salo uses for productions involving him)

(And those are just the ones I know about.)

While I appreciate JCS most in its original language, being a native English speaker myself, I realize translation and adaptation are important, for all the reasons that they usually are: not everybody speaks a foreign language with dexterity, or is capable of processing it at the pace a play or musical is performed; almost without exception, people respond better to the language they grew up speaking, especially in a piece of entertainment; and, most importantly, translation allows ideas and information to spread across cultures, sometimes changing history in the process. (After all, no matter what your religious belief, part of the reason the Bible -- the show's source material, as if you needed a reminder -- has had such an impact on history is the sheer number of translations, which, at last count, is 531 languages.)

However, translation into any language (pro or amateur) is a delicate art, especially where a play or musical is concerned. As Don Bartlett, who has translated Danish, German, Norwegian, Spanish, and Swedish books into English, put it in a piece where several translators were interviewed for The Guardian, “There’s always a tension between being true to the original and being readable.” On the one hand, translating the meanings of words and phrases in a literal way maintains fidelity to the text; on the other, translating sense-for-sense, taking into account the meanings of phrases or whole sentences, can improve readability. And that’s just books… imagine doing this for theater or film!

Personally, I subscribe to the assessment of Edith Grossman (also interviewed in the aforementioned Guardian piece), who once said: “…the most fundamental description of what translators do is that we write — or perhaps rewrite — in language B a work of literature originally composed in language A, hoping that readers of the second language — I mean, of course, readers of the translation — will perceive the text, emotionally and artistically, in a manner that parallels and corresponds to the aesthetic experience of its first readers. This is the translator’s grand ambition. Good translations approach that purpose. Bad translations never leave the starting line.”

(Or, to tie this back into our topic somewhat more closely, I'm mashing together two quotes from two different interviews with the late Herbert Kretzmer, the adaptor of such popular foreign musicals as Les Misérables, Marguerite, and Kristina: "Words have resonance within a culture, they have submarine strengths and meaning. If I wanted a literal translation, I would go to the dictionary. Translation — the very word I rebut and resent, because it minimizes the genuine creativity that I bring to the task. [...] I offer this advice to any lyricist invited to adapt or translate foreign songs into English: Do not follow the original text slavishly. Re-invent the lyric in your own words, remembering that there may be better ways of serving a master than trotting behind him on a leash.")

Nowhere is this job harder than JCS, especially in Russian. As languages, Russian and English are just too different from each other, each very rich in emotional shadings that the other language lacks (or at least conveys differently), to a point that nearly every new production of JCS over there has led to a fresh translation. Tim Rice's unusual wordplay, masterful (at times) in English, is very difficult to convey in a foreign tongue, especially when it can be safely argued that the expression in question is hardly common to its native audience.

The Piece We're Evaluating

As if the title didn't give it away, I speak, of course, of a certain insult Judas hurls at Jesus during their climactic argument at the Last Supper, calling him:

A jaded mandarin A jaded mandarin As a jaded jaded faded jaded jaded mandarin

That's a doozy in English, to say the least. I may have written on this blog previously that I’ve heard enough jokes about the Last Supper being at an all-you-can-eat Chinese restaurant or Jesus’ penchant for citrus fruits to be tired of them all.

In case you missed Tim's actual meaning: mandarin is not just a variety of orange, a form of the Chinese language, or a term for an official in any of the nine top grades of the former imperial Chinese civil service (or clothing characteristic of what they’d allegedly wear or porcelain objets d’art depicting them). The root word for mandarin in Hindi means “counselor,” and – unfortunately, given this definition’s origin in unkind Asian racial stereotypes – the term came to refer (in colonialist British parlance) to a powerful official or senior bureaucrat, especially one perceived as reactionary and secretive. When he calls Jesus a “jaded mandarin,” Judas is saying that Jesus is corrupt, washed up, and useless as a leader.

Could Tim Rice have found a better way to say that? Probably. But this is the method he chose, and for better or worse, it has gone down in history ever since, including a recent parodic reference in the second season of the Apple TV+ series Schmigadoon! to a “sour macaroon.”

Now, it took all that explanation to convey its meaning in English. How well do you think it crossed over to Russian? Well, no less than 16 translators decided to try; some were official, others fan translations that were used in little-known productions. (The number should not be surprising. This is very much the viewpoint of an outsider looking in who lived long after that time, but when an album is banned by the government, bootleg copies change hands for huge sums "underground," and the music on that album is in a style also banned by the government… well, let's just say something "forbidden" is going to attract a lot of people. After that initial burst of enthusiasm, then it's like any other piece of literature which is translated a number of times by multiple people -- someone who thinks they can do a better job of conveying the foreign meaning in their native tongue, perhaps in a more modern dialect or a more relevant way.)

Inspired by a conversation I had on ye olde JCS Zone Forum (RIP) with Russian fan Pasha Levcovetz, we're going to take a look at all of them, evaluating them for literal vs. poetic accuracy and also offering opinions on which might have even -- dare I say it -- improved on the original. For the sake of most of my readership, I'll render the Russian in (literal but accurate) English so you can understand what the adapted lyrics intend to say. (Special thanks to Pasha for his help!)

Translating "Mandarin"

As one might expect with a phrase that is not exactly common linguistic currency, and the number of jokes made about Tim's choice of words, the first problem Russian translators might encounter is "mandarin" -- more specifically, whether or not it is a literal reference to mandarin fruit.

Much to both my dismay and my amusement, two of the official translators and three of the fans decided that the lyric indeed referred to the fruit.

In the Teatr Mossoveta production in Moscow, which has been presented numerous times from 1990 to the present (and which made much larger departures that I've previously written about in response to a question from @nemoverne), Yaroslav Kesler rendered it like so:

Like a pitiful tangerine Like a pitiful tangerine Like a pitiful, pitiful, pitiful, pitiful, yellow tangerine!

For the more faithful version recorded on CD in 1992, Vyacheslav Ptitsyn traveled in a similar direction:

Squeezed lemon! You are a squeezed lemon! You are a pathetic, petty, pathetic, petty squeezed lemon!

Lastly, for something that is not a variation on either of the above, fan translator Yevgeniy Susorov gives us:

You are a withered fruit You are rotten, tasteless fruit You are a withered fig tree that will die in the flames!

I can see their intention, and, in my opinion, both Ptitsyn and Susorov improved on the original line, although this was probably coincidental in the former's case.

As far as Kesler is concerned, it's more of a vague fruit comparison that sort of makes sense. A yellow tangerine is overripe, and as tasty as overly ripened fruit can be, it's prone to developing patches of mold, and goes bad when left uneaten for too long. The meaning here when Judas applies it to Jesus as an insult should be clear, as he's been saying something like this about him -- metaphorically speaking -- for the entire show. (In the fan category, Vadim Zhmud makes the same choice and is even more explicit about his intentions, rendering the fruit as a "lethargic," "well-fed" tangerine. Mikhail Kokovikhin's take also chooses "tangerine," but gets caught up in trying to use it in exactly the way Tim uses "mandarin," repeating the word for emphasis and relying on the fact that Russian has three different synonyms for the word "rotten" to pad out the stanza. There's nothing wrong with trying to match Tim's choices as closely as possible, but just calling someone a rotten fruit in all the ways one can is a little weak.)

Ptitsyn's is more intriguing, partially because of a (likely) unintentional double meaning. If you recall, he refers to a pathetic lemon that has had all the juice squeezed out of it. In American English, in addition to referring to the fruit of the same name, "lemon" is also used to refer to a product, usually an automobile, that has flaws -- like manufacturing defects, in the car's case -- too great or severe to serve its intended purpose. (To cite a more abstract usage, the late Jim Steinman aptly used the "lemon" analogy in the Meat Loaf song "Life Is a Lemon And I Want My Money Back.") In Russian, the phrase "squeezed lemon" similarly refers to someone very tired, a person who has lost their strength or abilities. Poetically speaking, Judas calling Jesus a "lemon" at this moment has an extra layer of meaning that works really well in either language.

Lastly, my favorite (if only as an atheist theologian) is Susorov, who doesn't just spin the line into a much better fruit metaphor -- he even gets biblical with it, referencing both Jesus' teaching about "trees bearing bad fruit" and also one bad tree in particular that figured into Jesus' final week in the original Passion narrative.

Quoting loosely from the King James Version of Matthew's Gospel (an incident also recounted in Mark, chapter 11): "And seeing a fig tree by the wayside [Jesus] went to it and found nothing on it but only leaves. And he said to it, 'May no fruit ever come from you again!' And the fig tree withered."

In Susorov's text, Judas is not only condemning Jesus as the tree bearing bad fruit against which he preached, but also comparing him to a specific, very recent failure that might still sting.

(Susorov's choice is made even more ironic by the fact that Lloyd Webber and Rice intended to musicalize this moment in JCS themselves, but ultimately decided to cut it from the original album when concerns of length were raised, as previously discussed here. If that scene was still in the show, this would be quite the burn!)

Getting at the Meaning

Moving away from the poetic toward conveying the lyric's literal intention without getting bogged down in language, both official and fan translators seem to settle for general insults, so it becomes a different question: whether they are just that (i.e., general insults) or they convey the same meaning as intended by "jaded mandarin."

The latter is achieved adequately by Viktor Polyak (Yaroslavskiy Gosudarstvennyy Teatr Yunogo Zritelya, 1989-1994):

You are a crashed idol You are a crashed idol You are a crashed, broken, dirty idol!

It works. The show is called Jesus Christ Superstar; a fallen celebrity metaphor is far from out of place. Maksim Samoylov, in the fan department, goes for a similar take, having Judas call Jesus a "little, fallen star."

Svetlana Peyn, whose translation has appeared at Stas Namin in Moscow from 2011 to the present, is on a similar wavelength:

You are a pompous hero You are a pompous hero With poisonous loud glory you are a self-important pompous hero

Ouch!

Mikhail Parygin, a fan translator, is in the same boat, going for "a [...] pathetic, petty, pompous king." Likewise Andrey Voskresenskiy, with "a [...] surrendered, fallen, finished prophet," and Vera Degtyaryova, who settles for "a miserable [...] former leader." Also rather close is Aleksandr Butuzov, who has Judas call Jesus "a loser" and "a mediocre, brainless, stupid leader." Though Russian fans I've spoken to don't especially care for his choice of words in their own language, it's on the mark as far as literal meaning goes.

Another official translation is not quite in the same realm, but close enough to make sense. Specifically, Grigoriy Kruzhkov and Marina Boroditskaya, holding the pen for the St. Petersburg Rock Opera State Theater in an adaptation which has been produced since 1990, provided:

Like a rebel! Like a simple rebel! Like a deceiver and a thief! Like a self-proclaimed king!

Metaphorically speaking, if you squint at it, it looks similar; full-bore insults that at least fit the plot.

Things get a little more interesting when translators move farther afield. For example, on the official front, Valeriy Lagosha's version for the "Free Space" Theater in Oryol, which ran from 2003-07, is:

No, I do not want this, prophet I do not want this, prophet After all, in this life I was able to do much more

It's an interesting idea to follow Judas' suggestion in "Heaven On Their Minds" that everyone would be better off if Jesus had not become famous and reinforce that point.

On the fan front, Kirill Sukhomlinov chooses to turn Jesus' biblical language about the religious authorities back on him:

You are a pathetic hypocrite You are a pathetic hypocrite You are a pathetic, pathetic, pathetic, pathetic, nasty hypocrite!

And Maksim Zakharov doesn't really hit on the exact idea, but manages to create something that at least fits the character and situation:

You are a dark person You are a terrible person I am glad that you will end your life in prison!

Conclusion

Will there ever be a perfect translation? The jury's still out, especially -- it would seem -- in Russian. (There are more examples just from Russian translations to talk about that I will contemplate in future posts.) But it's always fascinating to view a piece from someone else's perspective, isn't it?

A few days ago I saw the current dutch tour of jcs and simon z definitely seemed to have smt going on. First of all his look reminded me of your apostle designs (/pos!), but he also kinda looked like he eats trash lol. So in poor Jerusalem, Jesus hugged him and held him close, but simon pushed him away and ran off, trying to hide his face. Then during the last supper, after Jesus prophesized the denial and betrayal, simon gets in an argument with a few other apostles. He was standing apart from them, they pointed at Jesus and he seemed to get defensive about something. (to me it almost seemed he was like 'idk what he's got going on/why he's acting like that/he's been weird' idk tho just the vibe I got). And then, during Judas and Jesus' argument he sits at the edge of the stage with his back turned away from them and the rest of the apostles, as he drowns a bottle of wine. So yeah anyway, wonder what that was all about

Oh also! Mary stands up for herself in strange thing mystifying, which i thought you also might appreciate! ('who are you to criticise me/who are you to despise me! leave me, leave me! let me be now!' after which jesus continues as usual)

this characterization is incredible i love it that's pretty much simon tbh. sitting back during the main character drama and stirring up more, unnecessary background drama. idk what's wrong with him but it's very wrong hope he goes to therapy soon, i admittedly love when productions do these little things to give background characters more of an arc or a personality even when they're sometimes unnecessary, do i get where simon's whole thing fits in in the story, no, do i care, also no.

(and at the end of the day, it doesn't matter ! cause that's life ! there's constantly shit going on with everyone around you, it's realistic ! and that's why i love jcs productions that utilize their ensembles well and create solid dynamics between the characters, it even helps highlight the main characters' dynamics to each other cause now there's context to the group ! there's context to the story ! this is a social setting !)

…Now, for fic recommendations.

One fic I will never not take the chance to recommend is i won’t say heart, but by victortor. 

It’s a very long AU oneshot, and it’s crafted so well — both in terms of macro things like plot, structure, pacing and the flow of information, and in terms of smaller things like imagery, word choice and patterns between lines — just thinking about it makes me amazed, and if I’m honest it’s probably one of my favourite works of fiction for any fandom. And the characterisation is on point, too! 

I’ve recommend this on here before, but for everyone who hasn’t read it — it’s well worth your time. 

Another one that’s written beautifully is fish and wild geese byimpossibletruths:

Another very long oneshot AU, this time of a world a lot more grounded than the previous one. But it’s not focused on worldbuilding, and it makes up for that with everything else — the writing style, for example, is extremely poetic and evocative, and the characterisation is also done really well.

The second fic is also a good transition point from where the main appeal to me is the more writing- and craftedness-aspect, to where the main appeal is the characterisation. If the first one had very good characterisation but that served more as a reason not to turn away (since I was drawn to it for other aspects), the rest have very good writing but the focus is mainly on who the characters are and how they think.

The Price of a Golden Core by AshayaTReldai is a very good one focusing on the whole Golden Core debate (which… I’m still confused as to why it is a debate), which is very well done.

…It will always be a little funny (and impressive) because of how well it manages to capture fandom attitudes on the topic — you can read it as two people on here debating and it would fit perfectly. But the characterisation of everyone is very accurate, it explores consequences very well, and is just a very good fic.

Worth of a Good Man by Vrishchika is a very good one focusing appreciating (canon!) Wei Wuxian — there aren’t any self-worth or self-esteem issues, just him. It’s written very well too, and like I said, the characterisation shines:

so i hold you close by PrismaticAvocado is also a very sweet fic exploring the relation between Wei Wuxian and Jin Ling, if you want something more focused on the Juniors or one of them (who I love but I haven’t come across a standout fic about them yet, though it does probably exist).

Finally, if you’re looking still for good characterisation (and good fics in general too, but characterisation is especially hard to find in the MDZS fandom), I recommend reading fics by other meta writers on here who are also on AO3. @ladypfenix (Admiranda there), @righteousinadversity and @rynne are people I know write on there, but they’re not the only ones, just the people whose works I’ve interacted with the most. So they’re very safe bets!

A very different journal entry this time. Currently at JFK waiting for my flight to go back home last minute because my mom is about to die? And of course I just sent back my passport 3 days ago to apply for a new one so now I have all these complications without my passport. I won't even say that I hope she gets better, because she is pretty much completely unresponsive and hospital said she has about 1 day to live. But I do hope that she remains stable/how she is right now before I get there. Missed my previous flight by about 5 minutes and would be in Canada by now if i didn't miss it, so it'll be really bad if she gets worse/etc. before I get there just because I missed my last flight. Anyways I'm sure I'll be using this blog a lot in the next few days depending on how things turn out. I have never cried so much in my life before, which is saying a lot because I cry very hard all the time (hard cries at least monthly with soft cries every few days).

To try to put myself in a better mood (?) let's talk about something happy.

Went to Ultra Miami with my NYC friends last weekend. Even though this might seem weird to some people, since it's a music festival filled with drugs and sex and partying etc, it was such a nice way to bond with my friends. I feel so close to my NYC friends here - especially some like Ricky, JC, and Tommy. Ricky randomly gave me a shirt of his on the last day just because he thought I might like it. JC and I had so many deep talks about how much we love eachother and our current friend group. Tommy told me he's really going to miss me if/when he moves to SF and told me that he had a little crush on me all weekend because I was "always there for him when he needed me" which is crazy because that's how I feel about him. On top of loving my friends, finally got to meet Chris Gao and it went better than I could've imagined. Not only was he into me, but he was seemingly VERY into me and asked me to be his rave bae for the weekend, sent me a video afterwards of him wearing the YBWM bracelet I made him. Also kept telling me how he likes having me around and that I had good energy etc. It won't work out for us because he lives in LA/moving to Seattle soon and would never want to live in NYC (and I love NYC so don't want to move). Yuzhou also called me after to catch up and specifically to warn me that he thinks Chris Gao is a bad match for me hahaha so yeah Chris and I are not happening but at least he made me feel really comfortable and warm while we were in Miami together so I'm appreciative of that and that I got to meet him at all.

OK now you've gotta give me your list of Jiang Cheng's talents that have nothing to do with cultivation! I'm very curious.

Well, there is plenty of overlap with your thoughts so a round of pats-on-back for us all! My thoughts:

Stick-to-it-tivity, bloody-mindedness, DETERMINATION (It fills you with!)--whatever you want to call it our boy has it in spades. The only times it really falters are understandably extreme (and extremely horrible) situations: other than that he digs his feets in and will not be budged! My little badger buddy! (I mean badger in the best possible way, namely as someone who grew up reading Redwall novels)

Intelligence: he’s got a brain and he’s not afraid to use it! This is combined with what you described as an ability to ‘read a room’. That social awareness is no doubt muchly based on his dreadful upbringing, which also explains why he isn’t practiced in how to use it to his advantage: if he learned to manipulate what he sees he would be indomitable. This also lends itself well to solid battlefield awareness--he recruited followers as a teenage leader of a destroyed sect during a war where they were outnumbered, I don’t think he could do that if he didn’t have a reputation for getting his people off a battlefield alive. No core needed--just give him some armor and a bullhorn and he could still lead a battle.

Dazzling good looks. It counts. 

He is a TERRIFIC duncle. Not perfect, but then no parent is perfect, and he certianly suceeds marvelously in not carrying the sins of his parents into the next generation. You’ll never make me believe that Jin Ling ever doubted his uncle’s love: he has never even considered that his uncle’s love for him is contingent on his usefulness to his uncle. (If Jin Ling lost his core he would be horrified, of course, but he would go straight to uncle. “What do we do now?”. And if ‘what we do’ doesn’t include getting a core back somehow, he loves and trusts his uncle enough to deal with it, I think.)

Excellent taste in women. Ok, the matchmaker list is silly, but it was clearly written by a boy who thinks Jiang Yanli is the best woman in the world and in that regard I respect him entirely. That and he met Wen Qing and was in no time flat like “*gentle gasp* Yo.”

as tumblr user @souridealist devastatingly said, he has an immense capacity for love--what would he be like if that had ever been treated as a strength instead of a weakness?

Very capable in many arts/skills honestly--the fact that he was always JUST behind WWX when the latter is a horrifying genius speaks to his abilities, I think.

Martial skills. Obviously this would be hampered by losing spiritual power, no more fukkin flight, but that doesn’t mean his skills with a sword or bow would disappear. In the fic I’m never gonna write (cause I already got 3 others in the pipes) where either WWX or WQ realizes he’s an adult human who deserves a say in his own fate and consult him before golden core transplant, I think this would be the gist of his argument against--because of course he wouldn’t agree. “You can’t be a sect leader!” WWX would argue, and JC would say “One, what sect! Two, who the fuck says! It’s my core that’s gone, not my brain. And what, are you and A-Jie going to not help me? Idiot.” “But, you are helpless! Defenseless,” WWX would say. “No kidding! After the war I look forwards to watching you travel around Yunmeng informing all the hunters and rangers that they are no longer capable of using a bow on account of they lack golden cores. IDIOT.”

(this is tangential, but related to the above: based on show-canon, at least, I don’t see how it’s a given that he couldn’t control Zidian without a golden core. Another spiritual implement we see, Suibian, responds to WWX’s-core-without-WWX but also to WWX-no-core. Madame Yu attuned Zidian to Jiang Cheng, not to his core. idk I just think it would be neat!)

This isn’t very well-articulated as a ‘skill’, but I think JC’s big problem is that when the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. Given space to breath (you know, without constant war or murder or That Family Life) I think he could easily learn other ‘tools’ that make him a very effective leader, person, whatever.

If a post-siege/post-canon wwx was transported back in time to the moment he has to decide whether to sacrifice his golden core for JC, would he still do it? What do you think his thought process would be like to make that decision?

I'm leaning towards no golden core transfer since wwx would know what JC would do with that power, but what do you think?

I agree. A desperate and traumatized teenaged Wei Wuxian made that decision. An adult Wei Wuxian who has weathered multiple life-or-death situations and now understands the true nature of Jiang Cheng and the depths of his hatred would make a different choice.

I think Jiang Cheng makes a smart remark (something like “Are you just gonna play your flute or you going to help us?!”) and Wei Wuxian stops playing his dizi long enough to give JC the finger… only for them to realise what it means that he’s stopped playing and a flute can still be heard. 5. hi!! i’m been looking for a fic for days. i read it forever ago but it’s during the cloud recess study arc and in it lan xichen realizes how awful the jiangs are treating wwx and tries to subtly convince him to leave tywng and stay in gusu bc he knows how much lwj likes him and he sees how talented wwx is and knows he would be a good asset for any sect to have. a specific scene i remember is that lxc would pretend to accidentally bump into wwx to talk to him. and they would go on walks and lwj saw it and got jealous. i think lxc was lowkey manipulative but in a way where he was doing it to make wwx care enough about himself to leave the jiangs. it was not jiang clan friendly at all. i kno this is so vague sorry about that. but it’s driving me crazy how i can’t find it when i know ive read it more then once. thanks for any help u can give

Your searcher may have mistaken it for fic, especially if they read translations online. / #14 is one of the extra chapters from the actual novel (Extra 7 in the official English translation)

So, the plot was Wei Wuxian was some deity and Lan Wangji asked him for something (probably defeating Wens) and Wei Wuxian asked for Lan Wangji's firstborn in return. So, after Wei Wuxian fulfilled his deal, Lan Wangji took him to his tent and slept with him and when Wei Wuxian got pregnant, he left.

Then Lan Wangji went to his shrine and kept giving him pregnancy related things in offerings and removed any alcohol he got. Soon Wei Wuxian got irritated and confronted him and later came back with Lan Wangji to Gusu. Later, he gave birth to Lan Yuan.  Please please help me find it. Okay, so the fic is wangxian and what I remember from it is that it's set in the CR arc when they are teenagers, and it goes as normal about WY trying to get LZ attention, but then WY misses class because he's on his period and LZ gets worried and then they become friends and then boyfriends and eventually Wei Ying gets pregnant bc he was using a type of tea to avoid pregnancy but it failed, and then they were to be married, and that's where the chapter finished. Here's one for your Fic Finder, since you're doing those again :) I'm looking for an arranged marriage fic -- one of those "the Jiangs arrange for WWX to marry LWJ during the burial mounds era to try to avoid disaster for him." (It's not a stone to break your soul, a song to save it by rikke, although I love that one.) The part I specifically remember is that Jiang Cheng was especially worried for WWX. JYL, WWX and LWJ were all pretty okay with the situation but Jiang Cheng was upset that even as time went by WWX wasn't returning to the sword path and didn't seem to be getting any healthier, because JC didn't know about the missing core. ~ @mikkeneko​

15. what's a canon scene you can't stop thinking about?

Completely serious answer: I can’t stop thinking about the entire series, especially anything to do with Wangxian. That’s why this blog is called “MDZS-track mind”.

But I will narrow it down to 3. Can’t go any lower.

1. Wangxian reunion on Dafan Mtn. Because can you imagine what must be going through LWJ’s mind at this moment??? It just gives me feels, especially the CQL version.

2. WWX waking up after they escape Jinlintai, saying in his sleep “Lan Zhan don’t be angry” and “quick take me back to your home.” It’s such an unguarded moment for both of them. 🥺 Probably my favorite scene in the novel. The manhua version is lovely, too.

3. The argument at the courier station. It’s so well-crafted and full of delicious tension. Wangxian’s crossing over of speech patterns! WWX throwing LWJ’s past comments about how they’re 旁人 and not familiar back in his face! The resort to courtesy names!

And when you add voice acting and some background music�� ahhh. Give it to me on endless loop. I even forgive the donghua for completely changing the feel of this moment because I love hearing the lines shouted in anger too.

Special mention to possibly the one time I cheer for JC’s presence and his relationship with WWX: “The two knew how to continue each other's words ever since they were young. Now, one sentence after another, the argument flowed seamlessly…” (ExR)

Returning to #1, when I started this blog I often thought about how the reunion scene actually runs through my head in multiple tracks simultaneously.

The main track is, like I said, just feels. LWJ has mourned WWX and moved on, while trying to honor his legacy. Then literally out of the blue he hears Wangxian! WWX is back, like a gift from god NHS. I can’t even.

The soundtrack is wuji.mp3 of course.

Then for a while I was obsessed with the thought that people who read the novel first, especially during serialization, had no hints that the song was why LWJ recognized WWX until WWX himself finds out. WWX even dismisses the notion early on at CR. Gahhh.

Anyway it’s just such a loaded scene, and you can’t even appreciate it fully on the first read/watch because you need all those reveals from the end.

3) how did you get into mdzs/cql and how long have you been in the fandom?

okay so lemme say first that i had NO intention of ever "getting into" cql/mdzs. what happened is that on June of last year i had exhausted all my dishwashing shows (shows i watch while doing dishes) and was looking for something new. i had heard about The Untamed and was curious. i had NO IDEA what mdzs was at the time and once i got through the first 2 eps......... well............ the rest is history

sometimes i am a bit sad though that i didnt get to read the novel first, but honestly? i know that a year ago i wouldn't have read it anyway, it just wasn't in my circle, so who cares! i'm just glad to be here now!!

5) what's the most compelling arc to you and why? whether a story arc and/or character development.

OH MAN, THERE ARE SO MANY........ though something i think is done quite well in mdzs are the corruption arcs! WWX is one, though it's quite subverted by there never being a "corruption" in the first place, just a "darkening" (except during sunshot but well... everyone had a darkening then). NHS was quite surprising, but it makes SENSE once you spot his anger and grief, JGY which is absolutely heartwrenching because his story is so sympathetic but the fallout and consequences of his choices were so bad and all because JGS just couldn't pay the child support. ughh. OH RIGHT, jc's is a biiig one too esp when it comes to the cycle of family trauma, watching him go from a troubled, but well-intentioned young master to literally a shadow of his own mother, a man so badly haunted by anger and grief who can't help but simmer in his own misery, to the final confrontation at guanyin temple where the cards are put on the table and he finally realizes there's a way to move on? *chef's kiss*, it was SO satisfying to witness

17) favorite canon facts about lan wangji and wei wuxian individually, and as a couple?

BRO THAT'S WHAT THIS WHOLE BLOG IS ABOUT uhhh hm... i guess if i HAD to choose one right now though, it would be:

- i guess this kinda fits into the character arcs thingy, but wow... the way lwj comes to terms with standing up for what he believes is right vs what his family has taught him for all those years. what's especially good about it is that while a conflict of ideas exists, he never has to forfeit one for the other! he never stops being the perfect Lan paragon even when he is breaking rules to stand up for his beliefs-- in fact, that only makes him even more of a good example! god, if teenji got to see adult lwj and how he just exists without worrying about fitting himself into a mold? he would pass out

- sometimes i think about my first reaction to wwx abandoning everything to save war refugees and how THAT was the beginning of his downfall and i just get. wow. that was such a good twist, i don't think we appreciate enough how good a twist it was to finally learn that between all the awful things we hear about the yllz, one of his most "irredeemable" actions was literally. saving war refugees. and he stood by it!! even after WQ and WN died and he had that moment where he thought "i could just leave. i could drop everything and run away" he slaps himself in the face and continues to stand by the people who have no one else to protect them!! AND IT'S SOOO GOOD, he's not a blindly positive person! he knows the situation he is in, he IS sad about the things he lost and left behind, he knows his future is not looking bright, but he also learned how to find a home and a place in this new community and has long accepted the responsability to these people. He still stood by then even after shijie died, even after he had nothing else to keep himself going!! he protected the burial mounds settlement to the very end and while that almost seemed useless because the Wens still died, it saved Sizhui, and that's enough!! he sees the Wens crawl out of the blood pool to protect them and thank him, he sees Sizhui alive wearing a lil Lan forehead ribbon and he knows was worth it!! every sacrifice, every moment of despair was worth it because at least it saved one person and GAHHH i love wwx so much. he did what he had to do, he paid his prices, suffered his consequences and now gets to be safe and happy. i wanna cry

- this was my first answer to the LWJ question but it turned into wangxian, so..... LWJ's complete refusal to pursue WWX romantically, for one reason or another, always coming out of respect for WWX himself. it's just so sweet to me, the loyalty with zero expectations, the wish to stay by WWX's side not because he wants something out of him, he just wants to be near him and protect him, it doesn't matter if his feelings are ever requited! how is a love story built when for 80% of the time neither of the leads are actively pursuing the other romantically? no idea, but it sure depended a lot of selling how much they care for each other OUTSIDE the romantic feelings and that's why wangxian works so well for me. they were friends before they were lovers, and we can see that they're STILL best friends even after marriage! they love each other in SOOO many different ways and it makes me so happy, it was so well deserved
