so many people can’t conceptualise emotional neglect as anything other than ‘my parents were cold and distant and never talked about feelings with me’, and this, while being just a general awful problem of course, is also what leads to so much john winchester mischaracterisation. in this essay i will
#like. it can also be#a parent who you’re close to who is actually extremely emotional and explosive and reactive#and via forcing you to look after their emotional needs and spilling their problems all over you also teaches you that your feelings qrs re#unimportant and that you’re unimportant. even if they dont necessarily mean to or they dont with their words!#anyway i’m sure john winchester was a mix of the two#but my point is like. God this applies to so much actually#there’s this incredibly pervasive idea that damaging parenting has to be like. i dunno. distant somehow#your parents don’t love you. you’re not close to your parents#and obviously that IS damaging but it’s not the only way a parental relationship can be damaging… far from it#and a lot of what makes john so interesting to me is he DOES love the boys. of course he does#and he isn’t some hyper repressed incredibly macho figure either like some people characterise him#he’s warm with the boys when we see him in s1. sure he turns all his emotions into anger but it’s always very clear he Has deep emotions.#everything he does is powered by ‘love’#(theoretically).#like. hes obviously close with dean. he even has strong ideals about parenting when he starts off (see 70s era john disgusted at how future#john actually raised them lol).#and he’s still extremely abusive and neglectful and damages sam and dean soooo much. like. all that can coexist#and it’s such a disservice to flatten his character and pretend it doesn’t#plus it just offends me. like come on.#idk i guess a lot of people like to project their own bad experiences onto john and it’s not like i’m saying they shouldn’t do that#but. characterisation wise#he’s awful in a very specific way#spn#john winchester#oliver talks

unlocked is very convenient and helpful but sometimes i get a little "kids these days with their convenient bulleted maps explaining the properties of each unmapped star's quintessence. back in MY day it wasn't even on the wiki--you had to trawl through legacy to find Mr. Forkle's 3/4th page explanation (page 342) all on your own. uphill BOTH ways"
#kotlc#in a lighthearted way#its more like a damnit! this is so much more convenient! all the times i've searched for hyper specific conversations when#we could've had this?!?!#bah humbug#also this is from a real experience#i complained to cath about it and then added it to the wiki. but the wiki's changed since so i'm sure whatever I put isn't there anymore

Do you think the series would be considered a bully to romance? I honestly don’t think so since I don’t seem to find any characteristics that would categorize the series as such.
it mostly depends on how we want to define bully romance, but my answer would be... eh, not really?
for one thing, the folk of the air isn't a romance series. it's a fantasy series that contains a romantic subplot, sure, but I think anyone who's marketed the series based on a particular romance trope is going to be disappointed by how much politicking takes place.
maybe you'd call that semantic, though, because regardless of genre, there is a central romance. but I wouldn't really call jurdan's arc a bully romance, either, unless we want to be overly simplistic and say that he bullies her at one point + they fall in love eventually. the appeal of a bully romance seems to be that the bullying & the romancing are intrinsically connected, whereas with jurdan, the bullying is just kind of the initial dynamic that gives way to other dynamics, including eventual romance (after some just desserts & groveling lol).
enemies to lovers is definitely accurate, but if you're a bully romance girlie I'm just not sure these books are going to have the dynamic you're looking for, you know?
#also i'm just resistant to labels like this in the first place#it's probably the crabby contrarian in me#but the tiktok-ification of online book spaces#and the way we've begun to market & recommend books based on tropes#is so exhausting to me#i want to experience stories for what they are - and not for a pre-canned label that has been sold to me#and don't get me wrong - book spaces (especially fiction) have always leaned on tropes for marketing#it just has gotten so hyper-specific and formulaic in recent years#(had to stare at formulaic for like a full minute trying to figure out why it looked wrong. it just is like that)#curious what made you ask about this / about your thoughts!#tfota#the folk of the air#tcp#jurdan#ask tag#anon#bookish blabs

*voice of exhaustion* you guys are like, so moronically white
#nnstuff#rambling#this is about the murderbot fandom. dont talk to me about it but y'all annoying as hell sometimes#but im black what did i expect#had one critical thought about murderbot casting#and then decided that its actually groundbreaking that its being played by a white man because... why exactly?#thats literally seen as the default. there's nothing challenging about a white man playing a characater who has no gender#white men have played all kinds of characters including women and minorities#specifically because being a white man is seen as the default experience. so of course a white man can play a genderless robot#its not groundbreaking. no one is gonna be shook by a white man playing a robot saying that it has no gender#you guys are sooooo easily swayed its embarrassing#you know what would've been really cool and played into the themes of un-personhood within capitalism?#a trans black person. or even just A Black Person#a black man would've been doubly good imo because black men are seen as hyper masculine and aggressive#so it having no gender would push against that#and a black women could make the audience think about what traits they see as gendered#and both would make u think about how race plays into being owned under capitalism#and why it would unexpected to see that kind of face on a badass security construct#that would've been something at least

i think simon does end up physically back to where he started, mostly because i really want to explore the idea of simon emotionally hurting himself by trying to draw a line between himself and ice king. because the thing is that even if hes physically back to normal, he still is mentally afflicted by the remains of magic insanity and all the memories of those 900 years. hes extremely forgetful. he loses his temper more easily than before, or will start crying for reasons beyond his understanding. his physical coordination isnt as good as it was before. he feels godawful when magic queen puts the daily checklist back on the wall, because hes normal now, why cant he just remember to eat every morning? why is he getting lost 2 blocks away from his own home? why is he losing his temper over incredibly mild things?
its about the internalized hatred for himself. cutting a piece of his own identity away because hes not as well as he once was. he was ice king for longer than he was simon, but he doesnt want to acknowledge that it is part of his history and identity. itd be easier if ice king was a stranger who took control of his body for a while.
and he really needs to come to terms with the fact that he IS ice king, ice king IS him, just a different phase of his life, because pushing that fact away is only hindering his recovery.
#adventure time#simon petrikov#wizard married au#to be clear im not gonna label it with a specific mental illness because it can be a sensitive subject#its a magic-based condition similar to real world mental illnesses that makes him forgetful and damages coordination and mood regulation#but i dont wanna go hyper specific since i dont have experience with such conditions#my own experiences are mostly with cluster b disorders. bipolar depression. and anxiety#and he is refusing to use the coping methods ice king and magic queen came up with together because doing so would mean accepting ice king#as himself#and doing that is going to be an important step in moving forward#betty has also got some memory restoration stuff going on but its gonna be a LOT more complex and long-term

Desmond: I am commonly associated with a bar, can’t remember who I am half the time, was named as a terrorist by a corrupt mega-corp, have weird eyes, and am constantly haunted by a dead not-god who is attempting to take over the world and has used my body to commit horrible actions against my will

I think thirteen experiences gender dysphoria but in a transmasc way
#like she’s 100% a woman but.#it’s the ‘misogyny is stupid first of all but why are you being misogynistic towards ME’ experience#liking your body and all the easily accessible normalized fun clothes options but also covering it all and being uncomfortable with touch#doctor who#thirteenth doctor#the like. social dysphoria of nonbinary transmasc of having hyper specific roles pushed on you that you can’t fully reject bc you like the#positive parts and some aspects but if you don’t reject it all you won’t be seen as a person#like yes it could be in a transfem way too but I’m transmasc and projecting

"Oooooh, I have to hide dead bodies in my ultra-modded Skyrim because they're naked and I never know when they'll turn up in the background while I'm recording YouTube videos," YouTuber version of a first world problem, first of all, second of all I feel like there are multiple potential solutions to this problem that would be less labor intensive than hiding every single dead body. One that leaps to mind immediately is deactivating the mod that makes them naked when recording for YouTube. You could also stop strip-searching them
#there should be a hyper specific word for when a skyrim player installs a mod that primarily causes problems for them#doesnt actually improve their experience in any way#and then they just complain about it instead of uninstalling the mod

i love the fact that cisn't is a term mostly because i just find it funny, but why's it need a flag.
#original#smthn smthn hyper labeling of labels and microidentities makes it easier to divide us or smthn smthn#idk i get why people like flags but the sheer number of them for Extremely specific things. feels weird#esp in the sense that it's causing infighting and it makes it easier for capitalists to commodify queer experiences.
