Nothing like researching for hours only to realize that the super cool papers you were reading aren’t useful bc their methods aren’t feasible for your study 🥲

so many people can’t conceptualise emotional neglect as anything other than ‘my parents were cold and distant and never talked about feelings with me’, and this, while being just a general awful problem of course, is also what leads to so much john winchester mischaracterisation. in this essay i will
#like. it can also be#a parent who you’re close to who is actually extremely emotional and explosive and reactive#and via forcing you to look after their emotional needs and spilling their problems all over you also teaches you that your feelings qrs re#unimportant and that you’re unimportant. even if they dont necessarily mean to or they dont with their words!#anyway i’m sure john winchester was a mix of the two#but my point is like. God this applies to so much actually#there’s this incredibly pervasive idea that damaging parenting has to be like. i dunno. distant somehow#your parents don’t love you. you’re not close to your parents#and obviously that IS damaging but it’s not the only way a parental relationship can be damaging… far from it#and a lot of what makes john so interesting to me is he DOES love the boys. of course he does#and he isn’t some hyper repressed incredibly macho figure either like some people characterise him#he’s warm with the boys when we see him in s1. sure he turns all his emotions into anger but it’s always very clear he Has deep emotions.#everything he does is powered by ‘love’#(theoretically).#like. hes obviously close with dean. he even has strong ideals about parenting when he starts off (see 70s era john disgusted at how future#john actually raised them lol).#and he’s still extremely abusive and neglectful and damages sam and dean soooo much. like. all that can coexist#and it’s such a disservice to flatten his character and pretend it doesn’t#plus it just offends me. like come on.#idk i guess a lot of people like to project their own bad experiences onto john and it’s not like i’m saying they shouldn’t do that#but. characterisation wise#he’s awful in a very specific way#spn#john winchester#oliver talks

unlocked is very convenient and helpful but sometimes i get a little "kids these days with their convenient bulleted maps explaining the properties of each unmapped star's quintessence. back in MY day it wasn't even on the wiki--you had to trawl through legacy to find Mr. Forkle's 3/4th page explanation (page 342) all on your own. uphill BOTH ways"

Do you think the series would be considered a bully to romance? I honestly don’t think so since I don’t seem to find any characteristics that would categorize the series as such.
it mostly depends on how we want to define bully romance, but my answer would be... eh, not really?
for one thing, the folk of the air isn't a romance series. it's a fantasy series that contains a romantic subplot, sure, but I think anyone who's marketed the series based on a particular romance trope is going to be disappointed by how much politicking takes place.
maybe you'd call that semantic, though, because regardless of genre, there is a central romance. but I wouldn't really call jurdan's arc a bully romance, either, unless we want to be overly simplistic and say that he bullies her at one point + they fall in love eventually. the appeal of a bully romance seems to be that the bullying & the romancing are intrinsically connected, whereas with jurdan, the bullying is just kind of the initial dynamic that gives way to other dynamics, including eventual romance (after some just desserts & groveling lol).
enemies to lovers is definitely accurate, but if you're a bully romance girlie I'm just not sure these books are going to have the dynamic you're looking for, you know?

i think simon does end up physically back to where he started, mostly because i really want to explore the idea of simon emotionally hurting himself by trying to draw a line between himself and ice king. because the thing is that even if hes physically back to normal, he still is mentally afflicted by the remains of magic insanity and all the memories of those 900 years. hes extremely forgetful. he loses his temper more easily than before, or will start crying for reasons beyond his understanding. his physical coordination isnt as good as it was before. he feels godawful when magic queen puts the daily checklist back on the wall, because hes normal now, why cant he just remember to eat every morning? why is he getting lost 2 blocks away from his own home? why is he losing his temper over incredibly mild things?
its about the internalized hatred for himself. cutting a piece of his own identity away because hes not as well as he once was. he was ice king for longer than he was simon, but he doesnt want to acknowledge that it is part of his history and identity. itd be easier if ice king was a stranger who took control of his body for a while.
and he really needs to come to terms with the fact that he IS ice king, ice king IS him, just a different phase of his life, because pushing that fact away is only hindering his recovery.

Desmond: I am commonly associated with a bar, can’t remember who I am half the time, was named as a terrorist by a corrupt mega-corp, have weird eyes, and am constantly haunted by a dead not-god who is attempting to take over the world and has used my body to commit horrible actions against my will
Cloud: … it’s like looking in a mirror

anyone else out there have the experience of never wearing band tshirts in middle/high school because you had a complicated relationship with your body and felt like the unisex fit of band tees always made you look misshapen or not feminine enough or just not good in general but now that you’ve been freed by lesbianism you’ve grown to appreciate the masculine and boxy fit of band tees and you’re now in your band tshirt era well into your twenties

sometimes i wonder why i feel so strongly that i need to make a dark comedy based on my high school experience someday and then i remember details like the first day back after a really tragic event that impacted our whole school's community one of my teachers was like "alright today as an emotional outlet we're going to go outside and i'm going to have everyone take turns smashing your own terracotta flower pot with a hammer, then we'll all come back inside and glue the pots back together for some artistic catharsis"
and it was a really moving display going outside and seeing all these students who had been personally impacted put all their grief and sadness and anger into destroying these pots for art, and i took some really great photos of the experience...
and then we literally never glued the pots back together.
they were just SITTING THERE in a CLEAR PLASTIC TRASH BAG at the front of the classroom for the whole rest of the year. "why didn't you just throw them out?" because that felt insensitive! this was catharsis through ART! but then why aren't we putting the broken pieces together again, and more importantly, why the fuck would you mix all the pots together if you thought you could put them back together
something about that feels like a metaphor for how the last two and a half years of high school went for me

sometimes I see a character that conceptually I really like but specifically only enjoy a certain depiction/facet of them. like there’s nothing wrong with the story or other characters or their character arcs but I just don’t really care about any of it. I’m here for the idea that was presented. And maybe character design. like I should probably just steal them tbh so I can do whatever I want.
