idk if y'all have seen about the old pokemon game design stuff leaking, like beta mons, concept art/character pages, and design inspiration, but inb4 anything submas, just know these are BETA CONCEPTS AND IDEAS and aren't canon! Take what you want, yeet what you don't, don't treat it as solid fact bc it never made it to the game.

How to replace Skyrim NPCs with faces made in RaceMenu
(aka the method I used to make all my NPC overhauls)
This is an updated version of the tutorial from this post. I forgot a step originally.
Why use this method?
RaceMenu (RM) gives you a lot more creative freedom than simply editing NPC faces in the Creation Kit (CK).
Just installing RM gives you access to new sliders not found in unmodded Skyrim and you can install further slider mods (such as Expressive FaceGen Morphs, or Khajiit Character Creation Extended, etc.)
It also allows you to use Overlay mods (like DomainWolf's mod series or Freckle Mania 2) which give you many more options to layer warpaints or skin features and create a more detailed face.
Links are to the SE version of the mods, as that's what I'm most familiar with. They likely have LE counterparts.
Things you will need:
RaceMenu (and SKSE; be sure to get the correct versions of both for your game)
NifSkope - you will use this to open and edit the mesh. Here's GamerPoet's setup video
More Informative Console (especially if you're editing mod-added NPCs)
BSA Extractor (or similar mod that lets you open and extract BSAs)
Things I highly recommend:
Creation Kit Platform Extended for Skyrim - makes using the Creation Kit way less like pulling teeth
Unofficial Creation Kit Patch - if you're using AE
An alternate start mod - I like Dimes Quickstart for its simplicity, but any would work
Another Race Menu Rotation Mod - handy for seeing how the back of hairs look
Stand still in RaceMenu (OAR) - stops the character from wiggling out of frame
If you're looking to edit an NPC from an unplayable race (Elder, Child, etc.) you will likely need a mod that makes that race playable
Fun Stuff for diverse options:
Extra slider mods (I like Expressive FaceGen Morphs)
Skin Overlay Mods (for extra detailed faces)
If you want to get REAL funky with it, you can also use OutfitStudio to have a lot better time sculpting/getting super wild with assets, but that's too advanced for this tutorial (and my method is very 'goof around until it just works.'
I don't really want to cover using mod-added headparts (like eyes, hairs, etc.) There are basically two options there: add them as new headparts for your mod or make your mod dependent on the mod the headparts are from. The second way is probably simpler for beginners, but I definitely suggest installing Creation Kit Platform Extended, as it will allow you to load the other mods as masters without the Suffering™.
The Workflow
1. Design your character like you would a player character. For this example, I am redesigning Arcadia.
Tumblr media
A recommendation: unless you really feel like you need to change it, it is typically better to make the Weight slider match the NPC's actual weight. You can see this value using either SSE Edit or the Creation Kit.
It is no big deal if you don't, but if you change the weight and load the mod into an already existing save you will get a gap between the NPC's neck and body (unless you use Save Unbaker.)
Be careful, though, there is a RaceMenu bug where if you load up RM again after exiting, it changes the weight by .01. So annoying.
For Skin Tone choice, if you do a custom skin tone (by pressing 'E' while hovering over the slider) I would recommend leaving the transparency slider (the 'A' value) at 100% (though I usually make the exception for Khajiit and Argonians.) This info will go into the Interpolation Value box in the CK, and the RM values can't be directly input, so you have to calculate the value with a (RM Number/255 = X/100, solve for X which is your Interpolation Value)
1a. If you are planning on adding faceparts from mods to your own plugin, I recommend saving and doing that now. Then come back to your save and change your headparts to the versions from your plugin. If you want to just have the other mods as masters, you can skip this.
2. Once you're satisfied with your design, I recommend saving your game and saving your head as a preset (click to enlarge):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. Now, you will need to write down some stuff.
Skin Tone (RGB value):
Hover over Skin Tone slider. Press 'E'.
write down the R G B values (and A if you change it, see above note)
Even if you use a default skin tone, this is the best way to make sure you get the correct value for the CK.
Weight (number)
Scars (name) (if applicable)
Hair (name)
Facial Hair (name) (if applicable)
Eye Color (name)
Brow Type (name)
Writing down Hair Color is optional: with this method, the hair will inherit color from the head you export, not the CK value. Plus, RM's values are not really useful, because the default hair colors are named.
It's the same with the Face Complexion (wrinkles, etc), with this method it is exported with the head mesh.
4. Export the Sculpt:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It should end up in your SKSE folder (SKSE\Plugins\CharGen), wherever that is for you
5a. Method 1 (works for both Vanilla and Mod-added NPCs): get your NPC in front of you, either by console command (example with J'zargo):
~ help 'J'zargo'
then, using their RefID (the number that appears next to their name) type:
player.placeatme 0001C1A3
Or find them in-world.
With the mod More Informative Console installed, reopen the console (~) and click on them. Write down their BaseID.
5b. For Vanilla NPCs: close your game and search for your character's name on UESP and find their BaseID. Copy this number.
6. Open your BSA extractor of choice and Skyrim's data folder. Find the Skyrim - Textures0.bsa. Open with your BSA extractor, and paste the BaseID in the search box
Check the checkbox next to the main facegen file only and extract somewhere easy to find.
7. Repeat this process with the Skyrim - Meshes0 file.
8. Create a new mod folder. You can either make a mod directly in the mod organizer (MO2 lets you right click in the left pane -> All Mods -> Create Empty Mod Above) or on your desktop.
Cut and paste the 'textures' and 'meshes' files you just extracted into your mod folder. If you are installing it via archive, go ahead and zip and install the folder.
9. Now open the Creation Kit. Use the folder icon to load your masters.
Pick Skyrim, Update, DLC (if applicable), and any other mods you want to be masters for your mod (for eyes, hairs, etc.) If you've made your plugin already for headparts, just load it up.
10. In the Object Window, expand the Actors -> Actor -> Actor tabs and now you have a lot of tabs with Race names. Find the race your NPC belongs to then open the appropriate gender tab. Alternatively, you can just search the character's name in the searchbox.
11. Find your NPC's name and double click. This opens their Actor window, which is where you will use all the data you wrote down.
If you want a preview of their face, tick the box at the bottom of the window.
Tumblr media
For weight adjustments: go to the Traits Tab. For all other values you need to worry about for this tutorial, go to the Character Gen Parts.
So, to parse this: you can ignore the Face Tint Layers box and pretty much everything on the left side of the screen.
Face Tinting Color
Type in your values for R G and B (you can ignore the Preset dropdown completely.) The Interpolation value corresponsed to the 'A' value, so unless you are working on Khajiit or Argonians, it will probably always be 1.
Base Head Parts
To change stuff in this section, click the line you want to change then go down to the dropbox below it and change it to what you want Face - unless you're using something like High Poly Heads, you can ignore this Everything else in this box: change to what you wrote down for each
Additional Head Parts
This is mainly used for scars and functions a little differently. To add a scar, you need to go to the Object window again. You can expand the Character tab and click 'HeadPart' then search the name of the scar you want. Click and drag the line with your scar into the Additional Head Parts box and it should show up there.
12. Once you've got the above like you want it, hit 'Ok', save your plugin. Now, to make the next step a little easier, you can click the NPC name in the Object Window again and hit f4.
This will export the meshes/textures file folders to the mod you just made in step 8.
Go ahead and exit the CK now
13. Go your your files exported from the last step. Open a second window from the files you exported from SKSE.
Tumblr media
Open both meshes in two separate NifSkope windows.
Tumblr media
If your SKSE head has a weird broken neck mesh like above, that's not a problem and can be ignored.
You absolutely must make sure your headparts match the head you exported from RaceMenu exactly, or you will get the dreaded dark face bug.
Now, you will need to find the Head textures in the head you exported from the CK. If your NifSkope is set up like mine, it should look like this:
Copy this line and paste it into the SKSE head in the same slot.
Save the SKSE NifSkope and close.
14. Rename the SKSE files (both .dds and .nif) to the number your exported heads are. You can then copy and paste your your SKSE files to their respective folders in your step 8 mod folder:
the .nif file goes in meshes/actors/character/FaceGenData/FaceGeom/[name of plugin]
the .dds file goes into textures/actors/character/FaceGenData/FaceTint/[name of plugin]
And now you're ready for testing! At this point I also recommend taking a second and converting your plugin to an ESPFE via SSE Edit. It's pretty simple and there are tutorials out there.
Tumblr media
Scully, you're not gonna believe this.

Am I the asshole for whatever this is:
I baked a gluten free apple cake last night, and I wasn't sure if it was baked all the way through. I tried it today, and it's either partially unbaked or just kinda soggy. (I am confident the eggs are cooked, just not that enough liquid evaporated. This has happened with this gf flour before.) My mom had had a slice earlier, but didn't notice anything.
I tried to get my mom to try my slice to see if it was maybe baked unevenly, and she stabbed it with her fork, so she only got apple pieces and not cake, which would not have given her any data on the cake. I told her to scoop it from the side so she's get cake, too, but she didn't listen and scooped from the front, and because the fork was so narrow, it wouldn't scoop up any of the cake parts. I once again told her to scoop from the side like it's a spoon so she would get a representative sample (a normal thing to say to her bc she's an environmental engineer) and she kept stabbing it and trying to use the front (the tip?) of the fork to scoop it up.
I showed her with my fork what I meant by scoop from the side, and she stomped off, and now we're not talking? I know it's basically trivial, but this is really bugging me because if I don't get a second opinion on the cake, I'm gonna combust.
Honestly, If I had known being specific was going to be such a problem, I would have put it on a spoon myself and handed it to her pre-sampled.
AITA?
What are these acronyms?

Close Your Eyes (Villain!Gwen Stacy x Fem!Reader)
info: blood (no overwhelming grossness tho), murder, implied homophobia, fist fight, implied sexual harrassment (over quickly), cussing, a bit dark imo, toxic love, obsessive!gwen, suggestive kissing, no smut obv, reader is scared but into it
☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆
You laid there on your back, eyes tracing the textured patterns of the ceiling. Your hands were folded while resting on your too-warm pillow. Your whole body buzzed with heat and jealousy. Your girlfriend had ditched you for the second time that week, radiating impatience before hastily climbing back down the staircase passing your window. Her excuses had been laughable. You flailed in your sheets, trying to find a comfortable position.
It felt like poison was dripping into your blood by the second. You kicked everything off of you, letting the cool air drift over your sweat-soaked body. You sighed and swung your legs over your bed.
Might as well shower at this point.
You opted to freeze the shower up, tensing as you first stepped in. The water cascaded down your sweltering skin. You sighed as you remembered Gwen's blue stare flitting around your room, always leading back to your window. She was clearly itching to get out.
"Gwen, what's your deal?" you had demanded in irritation. "Did you even hear what I just said?"
Her face jerked back to meet yours in embarrassment. Gwen's words began to fumble before they left her tongue.
"Wha- yeah, of course, Y/N, I just- you know..." she groaned. "Okay, I'm sorry. I'm just thinking a lot lately."
You felt guilty. You knew she was going through a lot, trying to make sense of the newfound powers that she gained after she had been bitten by a radioactive spider. Gwen had shown you a few weeks after she was bitten. You were dumbfounded, and frankly scared for her. She crawled stealthily up your walls and heard what you said under your breath across the room. She was easily faster than anyone, alive or dead.
But was it really a gain? The circles beneath her eyes had darkened to a deep, purplish shade of her skin, and her grades had fallen into an uncharacteristic pit. She had even left The Mary Janes, nearly collapsing into your arms when she snuck into your window that night.
Gwen was tired, and you could feel it in every fiber of your being as her mind began to tangle into dark knots.
You pulled her into your arms, kissing the top of her head softly. You drank in the scent of her dry shampoo, citrusy and sweet. She wrapped her arms around you, curling into your touch. You wondered if Gwen had shuddered from the air of your fan, or if she had repressed a sob. You felt her pain as your own, but it stung when she said she needed to wake up early tomorrow.
Tomorrow was Saturday.
You closed your eyes and lifted your face up, hoping the arctic water would wash your thoughts away.
It didn't.
It was nearing midnight now as you slid your pajamas on. You looked out of your window, subconsciously looking for Gwen's teasing grin. You missed your girlfriend in ways that couldn't be fixed with biweekly visits anymore. She had begun to collapse beneath your fingertips, falling apart like unbaked clay.
You recalled her irritability that had increased with her stress. Gwen would never hurt you, but you grimaced at the sharp memory of the growing black in her eyes. Not literally, of course, but something different swam in her pale depths. Hatred, perhaps, is the best word.
A chill spread down your spine as sirens shrieked down the street. Gwen would never hurt you, you mentally repeated.
But she might hurt someone else.
You had given up on sleep, tiptoeing through the choppy hallways of your flat. The walls had been weathered with the complex's troubled nature; arguments broke out from every side of your little box. Sometimes they even erupted inside. So, it wasn't hard to conclude that the random patches of instability in your walls were really holes punched in by past tenants.
You downed a glass of water from the sink, not bothering with the plastic package of bottles. You checked your phone, tapping away at the screen but not really caring about the notifications.
Your stomach churned with uneasiness. You could never really leave the subject of Gwen. You plopped down into a chair at the counter of your kitchen, pulling a strand of your hair and watching it bounce back.
"What the fuck did you say to her, you little freak?" Gwen demanded roughly. She was closing in on him.
"Told her she's too pretty to be with a girl, what are you gonna do about it?"
You seethed behind Gwen. You had nearly put your own hands on him, but she grabbed your wrist before stepping in front of you. Her shoulders had risen like a cornered animal.
"Oh, she's pretty alright, and way out of your fucking league," she laughed coldly.
He chucked a ball of saliva in Gwen's face. The breaking point.
She threw the first punch. Then the second and the third.
Shrieks of encouragement erupted from the crowd as you stood there, frozen. Gwen's chest heaved as she stared at the boy. He was unsteady on his feet, his arms swaying as he shakily got up. Phone cameras towered from arms in a group of what must have been twenty or thirty kids. Gwen took a final step forward to kick him to the ground, her blow landing right in his ribs. He coughed violently before falling backwards. She had knocked the air out of his lungs.
"Don't even look at her again," Gwen spat, venom dangerously boiling in her expression. Her eyes glinted with sadistic joy. She swiftly walked towards you, gently placing her hand on your back before wrapping it around your shoulder.
"He won't bother you anymore," she assured you, squeezing your arm. "So much for a relaxing day in the park, right?" You couldn't even process what just happened. You snapped back to your senses, whirling around.
"Do you realize you absolutely can and will get suspended if those videos reach the administrators?" you exclaimed. "This is so unlike you!"
She stopped and turned her head to look in your eyes. Her height casted a shadow across your face. Her pupils were tight pinpoints.
"I did it for you," Gwen said simply, her aura pitch black.
It was that day that you realized something was wrong.
The microwave read 12:24 AM. Your eyelids finally began to fall, though you were still sitting at your counter. You slouched over and landed heavily on your feet.
You switched the light off in your room and fell deadweight into bed. You sighed into your pillow before flipping back around to lie on your back. You thought by now you'd be able to drift off.
Your hopes were crushed as an icy chill washed over your skin and your eyes snapped open. Something was off. Your gaze moved towards your window, and a lithe figure darted away at the last second. You bolted upright, heart pounding. You threw the covers over and sprinted towards the window. Whatever was outside had fled the area. You shuttered the blinds closed and whirled around to inspect your room. Paranoia crept into your nervous system.
You were still catching your breath when you rushed to get your sneakers on. Whatever was staring through your window was too fast to be a person.
A normal person, at least. So what did Gwen want after she had left so early?
You listened closely to your father's area of the apartment. Obnoxious snoring gave you the green, and you shut the front door behind you. You ran down the stairwell and surveyed the area.
"Gwen!" you called out once you were far enough. You jogged down the block underneath the street lamps. You realized soon enough that you hadn't thought the whole thing through; you didn't even have a weapon on you. The inky night crept up and enveloped you in apprehension.
"Gwen, c'mon, I don't have time for this, I saw you."
A hand settled on your shoulder, but brought no relief: you knew from the thicker grip that it wasn't Gwen's fingers. You ripped away and turned to face him.
"Hey, hon, who's Gwen? She as cute as you?"
This isn't happening.
"Sorry if I was being loud, sir," you whispered shakily as you stumbled back.
"What was that? Can't hear ya," he laughed hoarsely, taking a step forward. He took a drag of his cigarette and threw it on the concrete in front of him, grinding it out with his shoe. You thanked yourself for staying along the streetlights. Although, you realized, it wasn't the busiest road. You silently prayed for Gwen to make an appearance.
"I..." you started, but couldn't finish. Terror nipped at your legs. You wondered how fast they could take you, what the best route would be.
Whatever, just go!
You nervously smiled before bolting as fast as you could. The ground was slippery, and the creep behind you began to chase. The sound of his boots hitting the pavement close behind you allowed a scream to bubble up in your throat.
"Gwen!"
The man sounded like he had slipped and fell on the ground; more than that, like he had broken every bone in his body with the way he called out. You gasped for air and looked over your shoulder, slowing for just a second. Relief washed over you as you caught the sight of Gwen's undercut and rose-colored ends.
"Close your eyes, Y/N."
You didn't obey. Your eyes stayed peeled open as you witnessed your girlfriend take someone's life, watched as he spluttered and gasped for air with her fingers twisted into his flesh. Her gaze was alight with disgust and enjoyment as she drained his soul away. His eyes glazed over; his body went limp. Rubies spilled out onto the curb and dripped down the storm drain.
As if she sensed the impending shriek sitting in your chest, Gwen whipped around and jumped toward you. She took your body and leaped onto a rooftop, slapping a hand over your mouth tightly. Blood coated your skin as she covered your lips, hot and sticky; thicker than the humid night.
She held you close and stared into your wide, teary eyes. Her grip on the lower half of your face was strong, but not threatening. Gwen leaned forward, her heavy breath tickling your ear.
"Gotta promise me that you won't scream, sweetheart."
Tears rolled down your face and over her hand, your breath quivering. A heavy metallic odor permeated through the air and into your nose. You nodded quickly, grasping desperately onto her arm for reassurance.
Gwen's face twisted with guilt. She'd never wanted to scare you. She timidly loosened her grip and shifted her long digits across your face to cup your cheek. Warm crimson slicked further over your skin as her gentle hand settled in its new spot. A fire sparked in your core.
"I told you to close your eyes baby."
You sobbed while nodding, blood trickling into your mouth as soon as it opened.
"I'm sorry, Gwen-"
Your sentence was halved as her mouth crashed against yours. She whined against your lips and pulled your waist tightly against hers, sighing over you with every break. Gwen feasted hungrily, grazing her teeth over your shoulders and collarbone.
"No, babygirl, it's my fault. I'm so sorry," she gasped against your skin. She held you firmly in her grip. "I'm sorry for not telling you everything, sorry for watching you. I have to keep my girl safe."
You cried out, emotionally overstimulated from the adrenaline of the chase and the murder. Worse than that, you liked it. You liked seeing her splattered with blood, psychotic rage blazing in her stare, going to any length to keep you safe.
"You're different, Gwen," you sniffled as she nuzzled into your neck. She pulled back, her lips swollen from kissing you.
"I know. Will everything be okay? With us?" she rasped lowly.
All you could do was close the gap between your faces once more, smirking against her lips. Gwen was different, but you were flexible.

♡ sunset orange: tell me a lil about yourself, and i'll ship you with one of the characters i'm writing about this time around and give you a song that would be "your song" for the two of you!
hi babe! <3 i’m gonna try n keep it short🤭
i’m very very girly!! i love pink, makeup, taylor swift and lana del rey, and everything glittery <3 i also love baking too, anything cute i’m immediately in love with tbh.
i’m a hopeless romantic and i’m quite shy and awkward, sometimes i talk way too much as well because i have a tendency to info dump lmao. rn i’m studying history, politics, and literature but i’m hoping to study either anthropology or psychology!! although aside from preferring the humanities, i really love physics too! <3
i’m also a pisces and i’m terrified of the dark and frogs <3
hello! first of all, you sound like an absolute delight of a person! absolute bestie material!!! also hats off to you for the physics tid-bit because i absolutely cannot get a grip on that science. i am curious about your fear of frogs, but i suppose i should get with the point haha
i ship you with.... drum roll please.... steve harrington!
now, please, hear me out. this was a close race, because you sound like the kind of person who is just so damn lovable that any of these characters should consider themselves so lucky as to have a catch like yourself! but steve? well. allow me to just paint the picture under the cut, my friend.
you and steve harrington would 100% be friends to lovers. i can see it going as far as childhood best friends, but i feel like his king steve era would have prevented that. you'd always amaze him with how smart you, and any time you info dump with him, he can only stare in wonder because, god, how can they look so pretty and also be so fucking genius? he'd always beg you to bake him cookies, occasionally bribing you with the offer of helping, but he's really just snagging the unbaked cookie dough so you'd have to kick him out of the kitchen at a certain point. he'd love to watch you as you do your makeup, laying on your bed and just once again being a lovesick fool who can't understand how he got so lucky. any time a taylor swift album drops, he's already gearing up to have a wonderful wine night with you and listening to you explain each song, watching each gasp and gentle reaction you have to the music neither of you have ever heard before. at some point, he'd pull you up to dance with him, even. and he'd never admit it to anyone but you, but his favorite taylor album is lover, because it's soft and pink and brimming with love and it reminds him of you.
so it comes as no surprise that yours and steve's song would have to be paper rings! c'mon, have you seen that man? he embodies the line "wrap your arms around me, baby boy".
1k celebration - come party with me!

Acarospora thamnina
I love a lichen the color of unbaked cookie dough. A. thamnina is a squamulose (scale-like) lichen that grows in clumps, lines, or mixed up with other lichens. It has glossy, smooth irregular scales, sometimes elevated on short, broad stalks to grow over the top of other lichens. It comes in various (delicious) shades of brown, and has rough, irregularly shaped, black-disked apothecia. A. thamnina grows on acidic rock in North America and Russia, and can often be found growing in the cracks of large boulders in full sun.

EARLY MORNINGS AND OVERTIME | Chapter 1: Lots of Dough
Pairing: Nanami Kento x Reader (fem, first person pov)
Word count: 2250 Summary: A smutty fic in which Nanami Kento brightens up the mundane, flour-dusted life a college dropout working in a bakery. Also, a newfound JJK obsession is to blame. Also, I know this isn't necessarily a fic blog but since I'm trying things out I thought I'd publish this story here before creating a separate blog. :) Warnings: None yet.
Read on AO3. Masterlist. Please feel free to ask me to correct anything in the above info, this is my first fic and I want to be sure I'm following all fic-posting etiquette. Ty!

5 am. Any day.
I hated mornings. I was convinced there was nothing that could ever make me like mornings. Not the smell of freshly brewed espresso on my perfectly timed coffeemaker, and certainly not the alarm that jolted me awake each day at 5am to make it to work on time. I begin every weekday at the bakery at 5:30am, making five o'clock the latest I could possibly wake up without arriving late. A swipe of mascara and a dab of lip stain was all I had time for before I was out the door. No time to consume more than my espresso, though breakfast was always on the house once I clocked in.
From 5:30am until 7:30am I carried trays of raw dough back and forth from the bakery kitchen to the oven, making sure each and every croissant, pastry, and loaf of bread was freshly baked before our opening at 8:00am. Then from 8:00am until 10:30am I served hungry, rushing, tired, and overworked folks of all ages trying to bring even a fleeting taste of happiness to their day before sitting down to their desks. Once the breakfast rush was done I restocked our breads in anticipation of our lunch hustle. The lunchtime rush was my favorite part of each day because it meant I could almost go home. At least, that used to be why it was my favorite.
5 am. That day.
Shit. Why did I hit snooze that second time. With one shoe on and the other dragging by the strap around my left ankle I ran for the door. I really need to start going to bed earlier. Ah, who am I kidding, I know even that wont make a difference to how tired I am in the morning.
The door to my apartment slams closed behind me and I'm on my way. I power walk the five blocks to the bakery and clock in with seconds to spare. Wiping the sweat from my brow and holding my timecard between my teeth I begin tying my apron behind my back. No time to waste on Friday, we are always the most busy the last day of the workweek. Most folks get a surge of energy knowing they've almost made it to the weekend, I feel nothing but exhaustion having pushed through the four days prior.
As usual I carry my trays of dough back and forth, and as usual my wrist strains under the weight of the metal sheet pans. It has gotten worse lately, almost as if the trays are heavier. Am I that out of shape? Even an assortment of unbaked croissants cause my forearm to cramp?
Sighing and squaring my shoulders, I turn my back to the oven so I can make my way to the counter and ready the cash register. Our first regular of the day is due to arrive any moment now. I guess at this point I shouldn't call her a regular, she's actually become my friend.
As if on cue, the front bell chimes and a swift gust of wind flows into the shop, as if mother nature herself is carrying my friend through the door and across the shop. She's always on the move and yet a strand of hair is never out of place. She makes a few fast, aggressive taps on her phone before throwing it back in her purse and looking up at me - all while striding across the shop like it's a runway. Her mouth curves into a smile as her eyes meet mine, "IT'S FRIDAY!" she sings.
"Thank god for that," I grumble but can't help to grin behind the register.
"That's the spirit," she leans against the counter balancing a shiny credit card between her index and middle finger. "You know what I'm here for."
"Coming right up - and you know I won't make you pay on Fridays. Can't make a girl pay on her favorite day of the week." I swat her hand away and turn to brew her espresso. A hot, oatmilk latte with sugar free vanilla to start her day, Mei Mei's day.
"So, any plans for your weekend? Any dates? Any shopping sprees? Anything more fun than sweating in front of an oven watching bread rise?" I'd swat at her again if I wasn't occupied by the milk foamer.
"I do have a life outside of this bakery, you know," I quipped, only to hear a laugh answer me. "And although you quiz me each Friday about my weekend plans as if that's a lie, I can promise you my Saturdays and Sundays are not as boring as you make me out to be."
"So let me guess, another weekend occupied with reading? Maybe seeing a movie by yourself? No, wait, I've got it! Spending half the day in the grocery store planning an elaborate meal to cook only for yourself?" How Mei Mei saw all of these options as a bad thing, I'll never know...
I looked up with a huff, but did not reply. She took that as confirmation enough.
"You need to meet someone!" She proclaimed, "If only to pay for your meals, and clothes, and books, and anything else you like to do..."
"I can take care of myself just fine, thank you." I never understood why Mei Mei loves to have others pay for her, is it so bad to be independent?
"It's not about taking care of yourself, it's about watching someone else empty their wallet to make you happy," she laughed. "And besides, you deserve it!"
I paused for a moment and considered the latter statement. Maybe I do deserve to have someone else want to spoil me, it couldn't be all that bad, right?
"Well, I have to run. Think about what I said!" She turned and glided towards the door, hair flowing behind her and iPhone in hand. "There's no better feeling than spending money that's not yours!" That last part was half-shouted as she passed the threshold to the street outside.
The next few hours I spent serving customers, writing down a shopping list for my manager to refill on different ingredients we were running low on, and restocking the pastries for lunch. I looked up at the clock on the wall right as it struck noon and smiled to myself. Just two more hours between me and freedom.
As I wipe the counters behind the register with my back to the door, I hear the doorbell chime, but no footsteps or sounds of movement. I assume the wind jostled the door, or maybe I've heard it one too many times and the noise is beginning to replay randomly in my mind.
"Achem." A throat clears a mere two feet behind me.
In an instant the backs of my hands rise up towards my shoulders as I spin 180 degrees. With eyes widened and lips parted I ready myself to cuss out the customer that just snuck up on me, not expecting to only be caught off guard a second time.
Suddenly I was all too aware of the fact that I rushed out the door this morning. That I couldn't take a second more to apply blush, or braid the loose strands of hair that currently tickled the sides of my neck, or painted over the chips of my polish on half my nails. I was standing in front of an immaculately dressed man, and all he saw was an overtired, overworked college dropout with flour dusting their apron looking up at him in silence.
Shit, say something. "Hi - um, what would you like to order?" Well that's better than nothing.
He tilted his head for a few seconds. What is he looking at? Are the bags under my eyes that noticeable? I knew I shouldn't have snoozed, I would have had time to put concealer on.
"Just the sandwich, please." He says as he pulls his wallet out from his pocket, a shiny watch reflecting the light as he twists his hand to pull a thick credit card out.
I will myself to reach for it without my hand shaking. Why am I so nervous? Is it because he scared me, or maybe because he's almost too handsome to look at...
"S-sure thing. Would you like a receipt?"
"No. Thank you."
"Okay, well, come again please." WHAT WAS THAT - come again please? I need to get ahold of myself. Or maybe just more sleep.
He walks to the door but pauses as his hand reaches the handle. His head slightly turns to the side, "Thank you. I will."
Before I could process the sentence, the door shut and he was out of sight. He said he's coming back - what does that mean? I already began to wonder when he would return, and promised myself I would actually make myself look presentable before work from now on. A promise easier said than done. Does he want to see me again? I'm suddenly overwhelmed with the want to see him.
Why I suddenly transformed into a giddy and clueless schoolgirl after two minutes of speaking to this man I don't know. Something about his demeanor, his tall stature, his sharp and perfectly fitting suit. He didn't leave my mind for the remaining hour of my shift.
I wiped the tops of the small tables at the front of the shop in a circular motion, gently massing my wrist every so often. It still seemed to bother me after too much movement. I willed myself to ignore it and push the concern aside, it was quitting time.
While walking to the office in the back of the shop to clock out, I untie my apron and toss it into the hamper my manager brings to the cleaner each week. I punch my timecard and sling my purse over my shoulder, eager to lock up and begin my quiet, relaxing weekend forgetting the world around me and instead immersing myself in the pages of my latest book.
The bell chimes as I step outside and spin around to turn the key in the lock. I twist my still aching wrist and hear the lock click in to place. Before I can pull the key out and toss it back into my purse, I hear the familiar sound of a throat clearing beside me.
Once again spinning around with a startle I glance up at the well-dressed man beside me.
"I was hoping I'd catch you," he started. I stared, wondering where he even appeared from. He continued, "I couldn't help but notice you were holding your wrist earlier, and decided I couldn't let you go home for the day without offering my assistance."
"Oh - yeah, uhm. Are you a doctor?" I figure the answer to that question must be obvious, otherwise this interaction is just flat out creepy.
"No." He replied with a straight face and nothing more.
I stared. He stared back.
"Okay, well, sure, you can help me. Why not." I guess I'm in no place to say no the handsome, though strange, man that's already scared me half to death twice in one day. It's a Friday after all, what do I have to lose. Just an hour ago I was daydreaming about our next interaction - it seems apparently he was thinking of me too? I tried to come to this sudden realization without blushing.
"Great. I'll meet you back here at six tonight. Goodbye now." He began to turn on his heel to leave.
"Wait - six? What are you talking about?" "It's still afternoon and I need to return to work, so I'm offering to meet you back here once my day is done." "So why did you come back now?" "Like I said, I wanted to be sure I caught you. I know the bakery closes at this time." Right. I guess he's a very... literal person.
"Okay, I guess I'll see you later then." I shrug and ready myself to walk away. Desperately attempting to hide the fact I'm overcome with equal parts confusion and excitement.
"See you then," he says and we both turn to depart. "Oh, and one other thing-" he starts before either of us can fully turn our backs. "Don't eat beforehand. I'd like to buy you dinner."
I freeze, making sure I heard correctly. So he's literal and straightforward? I never knew these were traits I liked before.
"Okay. Thanks." Was all I could mutter before pulling my chin back from across my shoulder and facing my destination. I was trying desperately to walk not too fast, not too slow knowing he still stood at the bakery door behind me and could be watching.
Once I rounded the corner to reach the straightaway towards my apartment I stopped and put a hand against the brick wall beside me. I steadied myself as the thoughts began to rush in and cloud my mind.
I have a date tonight? No, it's not a date. Is it?
He's not a doctor but he wants to help with my wrist he noticed was hurting? Is this just a trick to kidnap me? No, he would have done it already.
Why didn't I make time to get ready this morning? I need to stop snoozing my alarm.
I forced the thoughts to quiet and continued my walk home. I had a strange date(?) with a mysterious blonde man I had to get ready for.

“Mallow?” Kiawe was groggy as he pulled himself up into a sitting position and pressed his fingers to his temples. “Mimo?” Laughter resonated from the kitchen, and he narrowed his eyes, swinging his legs over the side of the couch and padding across the living room.
“We’re in the kitchen!” Mallow called.
Mimo giggled, “Yeah, we’re in the kitchen!”
Furrowing his brows, Kiawe stepped into the kitchen, hands on his hips. “Mimo, you haven’t been giving Mallow any trouble, have you?”
“Of course she hasn’t, Kiawe,” Mallow replied with a laugh. She watched carefully as Mimo stood on a chair and stirred a bowl of batter with a wooden spoon. “You passed out for about an hour so we figured we’d make something sweet before you woke up!”
Kiawe couldn’t help the smile that spread across his features at the sight of them together. They were both dressed in pink aprons with their hair pulled back, and Mimo almost reached Mallow’s height while standing on her little chair. “I’m sorry, Mallow,” he apologized, standing beside her. “I didn’t mean to fall asleep on you, but I guess my delivery work really wore me out today.”
“It’s no big deal,” Mallow shrugged with a smile. “I always love baking with Mimo. She’s a great help in the kitchen.”
“I am! I am!” Mimo beamed, clapping her hands excitedly.
Reaching a hand up to rub the back of his neck, Kiawe still felt slightly bad. “But still… We were supposed to hang out; I didn’t mean to leave you and Mimo alone.”
Mallow handed Mimo the spoon covered in batter before giving her a pat on the back and sending her off to sit at the table. “It’s okay, Kiawe,” Mallow reassured him. “Really.”
Arms circling about Mallow’s waist, Kiawe bent over slightly, hiding his face in the crook of her neck. “Are you sure?” He murmured against her skin. “Mom and Dad should be back home soon to watch her.”
“I really don’t mind,” Mallow replied with a laugh. Still, she didn’t pull away… If anything, she leaned into his embrace even more.
Mindful of his baby sister just a few paces away from them, Kiawe was quick when he stole one kiss, then another from his girlfriend. “I’m glad. I like seeing you two spend time together.”
With a fond smile, Mallow glanced over at Mimo while threading her fingers through his hair. “I love her as though she were my own sister.” Mallow’s brother was rarely ever home so Kiawe knew that she treasured her time with Mimo, an honorary sibling she could shower with love.
“I know,” Kiawe replied with a grin. “And I love you even more for it.” He swooped in for another kiss, so sure he could get away with it.
“Ew!” Mimo finally piped up, wrinkling her nose as she continued licking the batter off the spoon. “That’s gross!”
Kiawe’s heart nearly stopped in his chest. “Mimo! You weren’t supposed to be looking!”
Disentangling herself from his embrace and biting back a smile, Mallow began pouring the batter she and Mimo had prepared onto a greased cookie sheet. “Hey, Mimo, do you remember how long we’re supposed to leave these in the oven?”
Scrunching her nose up in thought, Mimo took a few moments to reply. “Fifteen minutes!”
“That’s right, Mimo!” Mallow confirmed with a smile. Then, she put the sheet full of unbaked pastries into the oven and set a timer. “Let’s wash your hands from all that batter,” she said, motioning for the little girl to join her at the sink.
Kiawe watched as they soaped their hands up before rinsing them off. After they'd finished up, he also visited the sink, splashing some water on his face in an attempt to wake up more fully. Passing by his girlfriend who was taking a quick peek at the oven, he was just about to head out of the kitchen when two tiny hands slipped into his own.
“Kiawe, let's dance!” Mimo squealed excitedly. She hadn't dried her hands off on a towel so they were still a bit slippery, but he couldn't bring himself to let go.
“Mimo…” Kiawe hid a smile even as she dragged him into the living room and bounced on her toes.
“C’mon, Kiawe!” Mimo exclaimed, ducking under his arms and spinning in circles. “You gotta dance with me!”
With a fond smile, Mallow put on some music, “You're a great dancer, Mimo.”
Mimo beamed at the compliment, and Kiawe swayed with her for a while before she pushed him toward his girlfriend.
“Dance with Mallow, Kiawe!”
Following Mimo’s order, Kiawe met Mallow in the center of the living room, sweeping her into his arms, and they rocked back and forth together, much to his little sister’s delight.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Dream Puffs stood in between a quaint bookshop named Moon’s Bookworms and the one and only tattoo and piercing studio in your small town aptly named, Nakamoto’s Body Art Studio. All three buildings adhered to a similar color scheme which consisted of various shades of brown; Moon’s Bookworms was displayed with gold plated, elegant lettering and a dark mahogany colored body, Nakamoto’s Body Art Studio was written with bright neon lights against an umber colored building and the Dream Puffs building was the color of pecans, its name displayed in large, white letters. The buildings across the street were the exact opposite; the flower shop Rainbow V was colored in pretty pastels and the bright thrift shop Tern & Ten’s Treasures was a fusion of artsy and chic. There was an empty outlet just in the middle of the two stores, directly across from Dream Puffs, that was very obviously lacking the loud personalities all the buildings on that side owned.
Recently there had been rumors that the lot had been sold a couple of weeks ago and that whoever had bought it also would be moving into the apartment directly across from yours. Although your curiosity was peaked, not catching a single sight of the newcomer, you knew that you weren’t the only one. The other owners on the block had gathered around in the far corner of your cozy café, gossiping among one another. It seemed as if Yuta and Yongqin were doing most of the chatting, Kun and Taeil chiming in whenever they thought it was appropriate. Seeing as the rush of customers had officially calmed down, a few of your regulars in their usual seats, you allowed yourself to part take in their conversation when Yuta waved you over with that dazzling smile of his.
“So, y/n, what do you think?” The tattoo artist asked, his cheek resting in the palm of his left hand.
“What do I think about what?” You shot back quizzically as you sat down, automatically setting the nape of your neck on top of Yongqin’s arm when he rested it on the back of your chair.
“What kind of store do you think this mystery person will open up?” Taeil clarified, lazily fiddling with the straw in his iced-tea in between his index finger and thumb.
You hummed. “Maybe something for arts and crafts?” You weren’t good at guessing but you did know that a store that catered for specific types of painting and drawing materials were needed, judging by Taeyong’s constant complaints about how there should be an art supply store because shipping was too expensive every time he bought something online.
At your side, Yongqin practically began vibrating with excitement along with Yuta across from you. Their reactions were something you expected since the two of them, as well as and Taeyong, were extremely talented artists; where Taeyong and Yongqin drew for fun, Yuta’s job as a tattoo artists required him to draw on a regular basis and he absolutely adored it. As Yongqin and Yuta chatted excitedly, Taeil chiming in every now and again, your eyes zeroed in on Kun as he sipped on his latte, his eyes suspiciously shifty. Before you could voice out your question, someone entered the café and headed straight for the counter. You had sent Doyoung and Taeyong on their breaks ten minutes prior so you had no choice but to slip out of your chair and bounce over behind the counter.
While the customer’s eyes roamed the menu above you, you occupied yourself with wiping the counter and when you couldn’t pretend to clean anymore, you drummed your fingers on your thigh. Finally, the tall - and extremely attractive - man made eye contact with you. With a smile you hoped wasn’t awkward, you tapped in his three drink orders and asked if he’d like any of the sweets on display since he was studying them so intensely.
“Can I have one of each?”
It wasn’t an unusual request, plenty of customers had asked before because Doyoung and Taeyong were extremely talented at what they did. You always found yourself fighting for the position to be their taste tester against Donghyuck and Jungwoo whenever they came up with something new. There wasn’t any friendly small talk as you prepared his order, in fact whenever you caught a glimpse of the customer, his eyes were continuously roaming around the building. You were particularly proud of the interior design of the place. Taeyong had spent endless hours painting designs on the walls while you and Doyoung chose the furniture you thought would suit it the best. Your favorite part in particular was the copper wire wall grid that was used to display the instant pictures of the staff posing goofily and the regulars. Judging from the way the customer’s eyes locked in on the pictures on the wall, he did too.
“Thanks for coming! Hope to see you again!” You chimed while you placed the money in the register. It was unlikely to happen, you knew, because the man wasn’t one that you recognized. Dream Puffs often had customers that stopped by because they needed a pick-me-up during their travels. The only response you received was the incline of his head and a gorgeous smile before he turned to leave. You watched his back as he strutted away, your head tilted to the side slightly.
“Love at first sight?” Yongqin teased in a loud voice from your right and if you had been close enough, you would have thrown your cloth at him.
“Shut up Yongqin!”
*
“You will not believe what I just heard!” Yongqin exclaimed from somewhere behind you. It was half past six in the morning and you and the boys were setting up, Taeyong had just taken out a fresh batch of pastries while Doyoung was bent over the glass display case for the food, organizing the goods meticulously and adding glacé cherries to the cupcakes. You hummed in question as you snatched a croissant that you knew would be deliciously buttery, flaky and soft when you took a bite of it. “The empty store! You’ll never guess what it’s going to be!”
“A hardware store?” Doyoung guessed uninterestedly as he adjusted a cupcake.
“No!” You watched, mid-bite, as Yongqin walked by you and stood so that he was in clear view of the three of you. “A café!” Both the statement and the hot interior of the croissant had your jaw dropping.
“What?!” You exclaimed while you set your pastry on the flour covered counter, just beside the baking tray full of equally measured, unbaked cookies.
“Yeah,” he said, dragging out the vowels as he slowly bopped his head, “I know right. Dream Puffs might actually have some competition now.”
“Out of all places to set up a café.” Taeyong mumbled, his brows furrowed, flitting over to the other side of the room to grab his bottle of strawberry flavored water.
“Where did you get this information from?” Doyoung asked after he straightened himself out, crossing his arms over his chest.
Yongqin, who was watching Taeyong gulp down his beverage, mindlessly said, “Kun.” You pressed him for more information, recalling how shifty the said florist had been the other day. Yongqin tore his eyes away from Taeyong. “I don’t really know how he knew, he just let it slip yesterday.” He grabbed a glacé cherry and popped it into his mouth. “We should totally put on some disguises and scope the place out when it opens!”
Taeyong snorted. “As if you work here.”
“Well we don’t want you guys going out of business now, do we?” Yongqin reasoned as he ran his fingers through his pink streaked blond hair. “So, are you in?”
“Of course.” You said, picking up your croissant and taking a big bite of it.
The plan was discussed in pieces throughout the day while the three of you manned the counter. Yongqin stood to the side, switching from chatting to your customers animatedly as they waited for their orders and telling the three of you how he needed a temporary employee because Chenle was going on vacation in a few weeks from June until August. He stayed until he had to return to his own store since his younger sister had to go for her break. As the day dragged by, you insisted that Doyoung and Taeyong to go home early - they deserved it for all the work that they do - while you stayed behind to some additional cleaning before you locked up for the evening. Not bothered to cook dinner once you were home, you called for some takeout as you toed off your shoes. While you waited for the delivery driver to call you to let you know they were downstairs, you flopped onto your couch and mindlessly scrolled through your phone. When the call came, you were quick to grab your cash and dash out your door.
With a warm box of pizza in your hands, mini boxes of the sides you selected on top of it, you turned to make you way back up when a voice called out for you to hold open the door for them. You fulfilled their request by swinging your leg and waited impatiently for the weight to be lifted off of your foot so that you could run off and eat.
“Thank you! Oh,” the stranger said when you managed to flash them a quick smile, “hey it’s you!”
Internally, you groaned. What would it take for you to be able to eat your dinner? It was going to get cold. Plus you ordered their fudge brownie that came with ice-cream. Nevertheless you plastered on a smile while turning your head to the side that the stranger decided to occupy and found yourself looking at the tall and handsome man from a few days ago.
“Yeah,” you agreed, not knowing what else to say as you followed him into the elevator and also stunned by the fact that he could potentially have lived here all this time somehow without you ever seeing him. Although, maybe he was visiting a friend? “Are you the one who moved in across the hall?” You asked curiously after eyeing him press the button to your floor.
“Guilty as charged,” he replied, raising both his arms. Then, dropping them back down to his sides and stuffing them into his jacket pockets, he said, “my name’s Wong Yukhei.”
“Y/n. I’d shake your hand but, y’know.” You lifted the boxes of food for emphasis and he nodded understandingly. Yukhei got a few words in about the town, how cute he found it and how friendly the people were, before the ding! of the elevator finally signaled the end of your short journey to your floor. Yukhei allowed you to exit before him.
“Well it’s nice to officially meet you, neighbor.” Yukhei said, grinning cheekily as the two of you stood outside your respective doors, facing one another.
After replying with sentiments that mirrored his, you finally entered your apartment and all but sprinted to your coach and dug in. Your new neighbor seemed nice enough. You wondered what brought him over to this town–there was nothing particularly attractive about it except for the people that lived there, not that anyone living outside of the town would know that or anything. It was when you were halfway through your third slice that something dawned on you.
*
“I know who it is!” You said loudly, barging into Nakamoto’s Body Art Studio. As expected, Yongqin was getting his forearm tattooed by Yuta. You greeted Jaehyun, who was flicking through a magazine, with a high five as you passed by the reception desk and took one of the wheeled stools and sat on Yongqin’s other side, opposite Yuta.
“Know who?”
“The new store owner! I met him yesterday.” Yuta finished the line he was working on before looking up at you briefly to acknowledge your presence before resuming his work. Yongqin was the one who prompted you to continue. “His name is Wong Yukhei. He was the really tall one from the other day.”
“The one you fell in love with?” Your friend teased. You mimicked his words, voice as high as possible, while making a face at him before groaning dramatically, thinking about how amiable Yukhei had been in the few minutes that you were together.
“Guys, he ordered all of the food we had on display.” You chewed on your bottom lip. Maybe his friendly behavior was an act, he did know that you work at Dream Puffs after all–you literally co-owned the place. “You don’t think he’s going to steal everything the guys make do you?” Both of your friends scrunched their faces which only served to make you groan loudly again.
“That’s rough buddy.” Jaehyun said from his position on the right side of the room, the sound of him flicking his page loud and clear when Yuta removed the tattoo gun from Yongqin’s arm.
“What’s rough?” Jungwoo asked confusedly, his voice sounding further than usual, probably just having stepped out of the separate room that he used to pierce their clients.
*
You stood behind the register, watching with narrowed eyes as Yukhei and some unfamiliar people filed into the building directly across from yours, each carrying supplies. It had been days and days of you heatedly watching their every move as they worked on their space. While they were all having the time of their lives interior decorating, you were practically tearing your hair out at the thought of having competition that was a mere twenty steps away from Dream Puffs. It wasn’t that you didn’t trust Doyoung and Taeyong’s ability to bake or your barista skills and it wasn’t as if you were the only café in the area or anything - there was another one just on the other side of town - but he really couldn’t have set up literally any other kind of store?
What was even more infuriating was that Yukhei was acting really chummy with you and the others outside of your working hours. It even became a regular thing for Yukhei to wait for your shift to finish so that the two of you could walk back to your apartment complex together. Admittedly, even though you enjoyed your own company, it was kind of nice having someone to talk to on the way home.
“You’ll scare away the customers if you keep making that face.” Taeil said, his eyes never wavering from the page that he was reading. It was a new book for the book club that he created recently, said it would bring in more customers. He shared a table with Jeno, who was reading the same book, and Mark, who was playing Luigi’s Mansion on his Nintendo Switch.
You sniffed, tilting your head to the side. “I’m not making a face.”
“Dude, you so are!” Mark, who was sitting across from Taeil, said after taking a sip of his banana milk.
“Don’t listen to them,” Jeno told you nicely, “of course you’d be making a face, I mean, that guy is gonna make a store that could potentially out-business you.”
You threw your hands at his direction as if to say exactly! with wide eyes. “We’re practically enemies!”
“Enemies,” Taeyong repeatedly lowly from beside you, amusement ringing in his voice. “As if.”
You gaped after throwing him a look. “What’s that supposed to mean.” Before your friend could reply, your attention was redirected elsewhere with the call of your name. Taeyong bumped your hip and scurried off. You turned to face none other than the man himself. “Yukhei,” you smiled, “the usual?”
“Please. Oh and could I also get...” He listed five other drinks and then picked out some food to bring along with him. As you prepared his order, the two of you talked about your plans over the weekend and even though you were aching with the need to ask about his shop, you said nothing.
“He’s the enemy.” You whispered firmly to yourself. “Do not get distracted by his cute smile!”
“Cute smile?” Yongqin startled you by popping up from behind you. “Is this about Yukhei?” He asked loudly, tone full of mischief, as he nudged your side.
“Who else would it be about?” Taeil countered.
Mark and Jeno chuckled while you raised your eyes to the ceiling, briefly reconsidering your choice in friends. Maybe you should stop giving them free drinks. Your gaze flickered to what would be Yukhei’s shop and found him sipping on his drink as he leaned on the glass, chatting to someone. As though he felt your eyes on him, he did a double take and beamed at you.
“He’s the enemy.” You whispered to yourself once again, hoping that you would actually begin believing it soon, as you raised your hand to wave at him–he kept smiling at you until the person next to him clapped his shoulder and you would have loved to know what he said because Yukhei all but whipped his head towards him, his eyes practically bugging out of his head.
*
It had been almost a month since Yukhei had moved into town and he still hadn’t opened up his shop. That was something that you kept in the back of your mind, even as he continued to be cordial with you and the others. Although you kept referring him as ‘the enemy’ to yourself, at this point he was your friend. There was no point in denying it or anything, considering that somehow your relationship with him progressed from only speaking to one another when he ordered stuff from Dream Puffs and when the two of you walked home together, to actually hanging out. You guys had actually agreed to start watching movies together every Saturday night and regularly went over to each other’s apartment to keep each other company.
In fact it was actually Saturday and instead of receiving a text from Yukhei about what food he should bring over with him, it was one asking you to meet in front of Rainbow V. After texting him an affirmative, you changed out of your pyjamas and headed out.
The nearer you got to Rainbow V, the more you could make out the distinct figure of Yukhei; he was leaning against the door of his shop, his left foot on top of it as he scrolled through his phone. You allowed yourself to stare at him for a little bit longer before taking bigger steps towards him.
“Hey,” you greeted once you were close enough, “what’s up?”
Yukhei returned your greeting, stuffing his phone into his pocket as he stepped forward to mirror you before raising his hand. When you gave him the high-five you assumed he was waiting for, he clicked his tongue and wrapped his large hand over yours. Startled, you looked at him with wide eyes.
“Wrong,” he grinned, a playful gleam in his eye, “you forgot our handshake already? Y/n, you wound me.” He placed his other hand on top of his chest, where his heart was, dramatically as he said the last part.
“I didn’t forget,” you countered. “You got it wrong, dummy, it starts with a fist bump.”
Yukhei huffed, the grin he wore turning into something much softer. “You’re right.”
Instead of releasing your hand like you thought he would now that it was clarified, he continued holding onto it and even lowered it slightly as if he wanted a better look. He turned it this way and that way slowly while staring like he was inspecting it. As he did that, your eyes flitted over to the beanie that covered his forehead (you liked how it looked on him, it looked really cute on him,) before travelling down to the rest of his face; there was a spark of something in his eyes, his head at an angle, as he stared at your hand in his. It was the look someone got when they found something they had been missing for a long while.
You cleared your throat, warmth creeping up your neck all the way to your cheeks. “Is there something you want to show me?”
“Yup!”
And with that he interlocked your fingers, fished what sounded like a bunch of keys from his pockets and unlocked the door. He made quick work of turning on the lights, allowing you to be greeted by the sight of minimal style interior. There were large potted plants by the door, a long island with seating as well as booth tables. String lights were hung all around the cream colored wall, providing additional lighting to the dim lights. Yukhei lead you around the space, excitedly telling you about the work that had gone into it and how he had difficulty choosing what kind of style he wanted.
“It looks amazing,” you complimented as he gestured for you to take a seat closest to where the register was. “It’s going to be a great café, I can tell.”
“Thanks,” he smiled shyly, “that really means”-he paused, tilting his head to one side with confusion written all over his face-“did you just say café?”
“Mhm,” you nodded, “looks like Dream Puffs is going to have some serious competition now.”
Yukhei released a hearty laughed. “Y/n, I don’t know where you got that information but this isn’t a café.” Your jaw almost dropped in shock and you stumbled with your words before settling for a ‘huh’. “Yeah, dum-dum, it’s going to be a boba shop.”
“Boba. . .shop.” You echoed slowly.
Yukhei nodded, “yeah.”
Later on the stroll home, after the two of you spent an hour or two in his shop with him telling you what kind of flavors he planned to have on the menu and pulling some suggestions from yourself (“what about toffee popcorn with, I don’t know, maybe whipped cream and actual popcorn at the top?”), he asked who told you that he’d be opening up a café to which you grumbled ‘Yongqin’, he let out a heart laugh again. You could feel the tremors that went through his body as he laughed since you were tucked warmly under his arm and whether or not it was because his laughter was contagious or how weirdly intimate the situation felt - it was the way he took of his beanie and adjusted it on your head, insisting that you looked cold (you were) and the way the two of you were practically glued to each other’s side - but you huffed out a laugh before smiling to yourself and leaned into him more.
“Hey, y/n,” Yukhei called once you unlocked your door. You turned to face him and found him aiming his phone straight at you. “Smile.” Instead of smiling, you made a silly face at him and jogged inside your apartment after the tell-tale sound his phone made that indicated that he snapped a picture of you.
It was only when you were taking off your jacket and shoes that you realized that he hadn’t asked for his beanie back. Although you knew that you could easily make the short trip to him across the hall, you decided that you would give it back the next time he was at your place.
“A little birdie told me that you and Yukhei went on a date last night.” Yuta said the following morning, barging into your small office and then plopped himself on the couch that was placed near your work desk.
You were quick to shoot his statement down with, “your ‘little birdie’ is wrong.” After typing a quick ‘Kind Regards’ along with your name and position at the end of your email, you swiveled your chair around so that you could face your friend. He was scrolling through Instagram, double tapping every few seconds. “Who was it that told you that, anyway?”
“I don’t snitch on my sources.”
“I’ll give you twenty-five percent off whenever you buy coffee for a week.”
“Sold,” he said while he typed something quickly on his phone before lowering it so that he could flip himself over on his stomach and look up at you through his lashes. “It was Taeil. He fell asleep in his office and when he was locking up he said he saw you two mooning at each other alone in Yukhei’s shop.”
“We were not mooning at each other,” you sniffed, skimming your hands down your thighs. “What? We weren’t!” You emphasized when he gave you an unimpressed look.
Just as Yuta was about to reply, probably something sarcastic by how he arched his brow, his phone chimed to signal a text. He tutted at you before re-arranging himself so that he could reply with ease. You watched as his eyes read the message quickly before the corner of his mouth quirked upwards and he huffed out a laugh, typing furiously. While a large part of you was curious as to what could have elicited that reaction, you chose to turn back to your computer screen and browse through your email inbox.
“If you aren’t dating him,” Yuta said after a few minutes of silence that involved him typing away while you binned some junk mail, “then what’s this all about?” From the corner of your eye, you saw him lift his phone towards you so that you could read whatever was on his screen. Turning, your eyes skimmed through his text, your eyebrows all but crawling to your hairline. He allowed you to grab the phone from his hand so that you could zoom in on the picture that followed the texts from Mark–his words were all in capital letters followed by several exclamation points. You opened your mouth to say, well, literally anything but nothing came out so you snapped it shut. Wordlessly, you handed Yuta back his phone before logging out of your computer.
“I have to go,” You said lowly, dazed, as you stood up. “I have to- will you tell the guys I’ll be back soon?” Yuta gave you an affirmative and then you were off, practically sprinting towards the door.
On the way back to your apartment complex, your thoughts were full of Yukhei. You could admit that you had a big crush on him. It was difficult not to, you thought, what with how sweet and thoughtful he was. He was also funny and knew how to brighten up the room. But did that mean you wanted to date him? You weren’t sure although you knew that you certainly wouldn’t mind going on a date with him to find out.
Soon enough, you found yourself in front of his door. You stared at it for a long time, your heart racing, before you found enough courage to rap your knuckles against it. There was no answer. You tried an additional two times before you decided to leave it be, that you could talk to him later after your shift because he would probably be by the door, waiting for you with that big smile of his. You nodded to yourself and turned to walk away.
“Y/n?” His groggy voice came when you had taken three steps away from his door. “What’s up? Are you okay?” You turned on your heel (he looked adorable with his bedhead) and nodded stiffly, your heartbeat picking up speed again. “Want to come in?” He invited, opening his door wider.
You cleared your throat. “Yeah.”
“Aren’t you supposed to be at work right now?” He asked, locking his door after you shuffled in.
“Yeah but there was something I needed to talk to you about.”
Yukhei took a seat beside you on the couch and you tried not to concentrate on his knee that leaned against yours or how he automatically rested his arm on the back of the couch so that you were practically laying on it.
“Texting me wouldn’t have done, no?” He teased.
You shot a quick glance at him, took in his cute little smile and then stared pointedly ahead at his carpeted floor. “I didn’t really think about that at the moment.” You replied, your shoulders lifting to your earlobes. The only thing you had thought about was how you wanted to see him when you confronted him about what Yuta had shown you. Yukhei prompted you to tell him the reason for your visit. “Well, um, earlier Yuta showed me a text from Mark and I’m- we’re- your phone wallpaper?” The arm beneath your shoulders was gone in an instant and Yukhei jolted to his feet. “So it’s true?” You asked, peeking at him through your lashes. His expression was one of horror, arms splayed at his sides as if prepared to explain himself.
“Please don’t be mad! Taeil took the picture last night because apparently he saw us? I don’t know, Mark told me so I asked him to send me the picture and, well, I thought it was cute you know?” You did know. Taeil had managed to snap a shot of you two in front of Rainbow V - didn’t Yuta say that he only saw the two of you in the shop? - and it was when Yukhei had been laughing with you under his arm, a smile resting on your face. “I know I probably should have asked you, I don’t know what I didn’t. I can change it now if you want? Please don’t be mad at me.”
“I’m not mad,” you assured, looking him in the eye so he knew that you meant it. He visibly relaxed, the tension bleeding out of him at your words. Once he stopped looking so panicked, he looked at you with wide eyes before darting them towards the floor. It seemed the roles were reversed this time, what with him avoiding your gaze while you continued staring at him. He raised a hand to cover his eyes while the other went to hug itself around his waist. “Hey Yukhei,” he still refused to look at you, “would you maybe want to go on a date with me?”
That immediately gained his attention. “What?” His voice was soft, coated in disbelief. “Are you serious?” After you insisted that you were, never once breaking eye contact with him, a large smile blossomed on his face and he let out a loud whoop, punching the air in triumph. As if remembering that you were there, he dropped his arm, although the smile remained on his face. “Apparently there’s a boba place opening tomorrow, right in front of Dream Puffs, what do you say we try it out?”
“I’d love to but I’m worried about seating.”
“Don’t worry, I’m on good terms with the owner.” Yukhei winked. The two of you dissolved into a fit of laughter shortly after.
“I’ve gotta get back to work,” you said while you stood up from the couch once both of you sobered. “But I’ll see you later?”
“Of course!” Pleased smiles were plastered on both of your faces even as he walked you to the door.
*
You had barely stepped foot into Dream Puffs before Yongqin wrapped an arm around you and lead you to a table where Kun, Yuta and Taeil were seated, two vacant seats in between Kun and Yuta. Taeil let out a small titter, a smile that was too wide etched on his face as you and Yongqin sat down.
“Tell us everything!” Yongqin exclaimed, “spare no detail!”
“I will but first,” you said as you turned to face him. “You brat! You knew that he wasn’t opening up a café, didn’t you? You totally tricked me!”
There was no hint of guilt from him, just a shit-eating grin that reached from ear to ear. “Maybe so. Now go on, tell us!” You rolled your eyes, feigning annoyance but couldn’t fight off the smile that gradually grew wider and wider on your face as you recounted the recent events that transpired between you and Yukhei.

BUT ANYWAYS if dan was a burnt hufflepuff, would he get along as well as he does with phil. a raw, unbaked, not safe to eat unless you want salmonella hufflepuff?
(for context, info on the sorting hat chats method of sorting is here: link)
yes absolutely 100%; a burnt hufflepuff would still have the same values as an unburnt hufflepuff and clearly between viewing phil’s way of engaging with morality and the world as aspirational vs naive, dan’s landed solidly in the looking-up-to-phil side of things. there’s room in the sortinghat chats method for burnt/etc primaries to heal, and i honestly think that proximity to phil’s unburnt hufflepuff would be good for dan’s burnt hufflepuff modality.

How did you get started modding npcs? I’d love to work on making the elderly people in Skyrim feel less identical but the creation kit is intimidating. Is there an easy way to dip into the modding scene or do you just have to crack things open and make mistakes? It’s hard to find guides that don’t focus on cbbe 😔
Sorry for the lateness of this, Tumblr won't let me edit drafts for asks on mobile, so I couldn't jot down my thoughts as I had them which is my usual method of answering stuff like this.
Oh man, my start was probably learning to edit the NPC from Tame the Beast 2 lol. She stood out like a sore thumb in my game. I found a tutorial that ended up becoming my method through the RS Children page.
It primarily focuses around using RaceMenu, which has a function that allows you to export the head you make directly from Character Creation. This allows you to use the extra facial sliders (like the ones from and overlays (like Freckle Mania 2, my beloved). So basically, it allows for potentially far more unique NPCs than editing via CK.
I am going to warn you, it definitely is not simpler than editing NPCs in the Creation Kit alone. Sorry.
Links are to the SE version of the mods, as that's what I'm most familiar with. They likely have LE counterparts. Sorry, I am not the greatest at writing tutorials.
Things you will need:
RaceMenu (and SKSE; be sure to get the correct versions of both for your game)
NifSkope - you will use this to open and edit the mesh. Here's GamerPoet's setup video
Things I recommend:
Creation Kit Platform Extended for Skyrim - makes using the Creation Kit way less like pulling teeth
Unofficial Creation Kit Patch - if you're using AE
an alternate start mod - I like Dimes Quickstart for its simplicity, but any would work
Another Race Menu Rotation Mod - handy for seeing how the back of hairs look
Stand still in RaceMenu (OAR) - stops the character from wiggling out of frame
For your quest to edit elders specifically, you will probably need a playable Elder Race mod (I have not tested any, but just searching for them yields plenty of options.) You will have to know exactly what races the NPCs you're editing are, though
It is no big deal if you don't, but if you change the weight and load the mod into an already existing save you will get a gap between the NPC's neck and body (unless you use Save Unbaker.) Be careful, though, there is a RaceMenu bug where if you load up RM again after exiting, it changes the weight by .01.
It should end up in your SKSE folder (SKSE\Plugins\CharGen), wherever that is for you
5. Now you can close down the game and open the Creation Kit.
Use the folder icon to load your masters.
Pick Skyrim, Update, any official DLC (if applicable), and any other mods you want to be masters for your mod (for eyes, hairs, etc.) If you've made your plugin already for headparts, just load it up.
6. In the Object Window, expand the Actors -> Actor -> Actor tabs and now you have a lot of tabs with Race names. Find the race your NPC belongs to then open the appropriate gender tab. Alternatively, you can just search the character's name in the searchbox.
7. Find your NPC's name and double click. This opens their Actor window, which is where you will use all the data you wrote down.
If you want a preview of their face, tick the box at the bottom of the window.
For weight adjustments: go to the Traits Tab. For all other values you need to worry about for this tutorial, go to the Character Gen Parts.
Tumblr media
This is mainly used for scars and functions a little differently To add a scar, you need to go to the Object window again You can expand the Character tab and click 'HeadPart' then search the name of the scar you want. Click and drag the line with your scar into the Additional Head Parts box and it should show up there.
8. Once you've got the above like you want it, hit 'Ok', save your plugin. Now, to make the next step a little easier, you can click the NPC name in the Object Window again and hit f4.
This will export the meshes/textures file folders to wherever you have CK set up to export files (if you use MO2, it goes directly to the Overwrite folder by default.) Your plugin will be in the same place, (probably. Mine is bugged.)
Go ahead and exit the CK now
9. Go your your files exported from the last step. Open a second window from the files you exported from SKSE.
Open both meshes in two separate NifSkope windows.
You absolutely must make sure your headparts match the head you exported from RaceMenu exactly, or you will get the dreaded dark face bug.
If your SKSE head has a weird broken neck mesh, that's not a problem and can be ignored.
Now, you will need to find the Head textures in the head you exported from the CK. If your NifSkope is set up like mine, it should look like this:
Tumblr media
Copy this line and paste it into the SKSE head in the same slot.
Tumblr media
Save the SKSE NifSkope and close.
10. Rename the SKSE files (both .dds and .nif) to the number your exported heads are. You can then copy and paste your your SKSE files to their respective folders:
the .nif file goes in meshes/actors/character/FaceGenData/FaceGeom/[name of plugin]
the .dds file goes into textures/actors/character/FaceGenData/FaceTint/[name of plugin]
And now you're ready to pack up your mod for testing! At this point I also recommend taking a second and converting your plugin to an ESPFE via SSE Edit. It's pretty simple and there are probably tutorials out there.
Tumblr media
Scully, you're not gonna believe this.

Best Whole Wheat Pizza Dough Recipe with a Crispy Crust
As a family, we eat mostly gluten-free, but we still enjoy old favorites like homemade hamburger helper on occasion. This recipe quickly became a repeat request from the kids and the parents aren’t complaining either!
When your kids are literally swooning over a whole wheat pizza crust and asking for fourths, you know you have a winner. (Or, perhaps your kids haven’t had homemade pizza with actual wheat flour in YEARS – that could be it, too.)
We generally have homemade pizza every Sunday, and this year my kids have been in charge every other week as I’ve volunteered with the high school youth group. This is a huge benefit of the kids knowing how to cook – it allowed me to serve our community in a way I could not have done (at dinnertime!) without adding stress to our lives.
The Ultimate Crispy Pizza Crust
This crust really is a winner: 100% whole grains, simple to put together, baked with a special secret that makes it crispy on the bottom, almost so crunchy that you get that “I want to eat another potato chip” thing going on. (Resist that, by the way – no binging on pizza! Moderation…)
When I was doing my crazy pizza weekend, I only looked at 3 whole wheat pizza crust recipes, because they were all similar enough. You need:
And you’re good to go!
Easy Whole Wheat Pizza Dough Recipe
Because of the short rise time required and my time crunch to get my oldest out the door for an impromptu trip with a friend to an a cappella concert, I chose the recipe in From Freezer to Table by my friends Polly and Rachel. I didn’t need to freeze the crust, but it’s nice to know that I could (as dough, unbaked) if I wanted to!
My version tweaks the flour amount a bit and really changes up the baking style, which I think you’ll love.

Best Whole Wheat Pizza Dough Recipe with a Crispy Crust
Description
My family’s favorite whole wheat pizza dough recipe. So simple and delicious with a perfectly crispy crust!
Instructions
Heat the water (or use warm tap water). You know it’s about 100F if it feels warmer than your body temp, but not at all painful to leave your finger in for more than 5-10 seconds.
In the bowl of a stand mixer (like a KitchenAid), whisk the water, yeast, and sugar/maple syrup until combined. Set aside for 5-10 minutes to “proof” the yeast. (That means you should see bubbles.)
Once bubbly, add 1 Tbs. of the olive oil (use the code STEWARDSHIP for 10% off at that site!) and the salt to the bowl and whisk to combine.
Use the dough hook. Turn the mixer to low speed and add about 1/3 of the flour at a time. Turn up the speed to medium once all the flour is added. If a ball of dough doesn’t form and pull away from the sides of the mixing bowl, it’s too sticky. Add flour 1/8 or 1/4 cup at a time until it does. Be sure to give the flour a chance to be incorporated into the dough before adding more.
Let the mixer do the work for you with the dough hook for 5 minutes on medium-high.
Pour the other tablespoon of olive oil on the dough and flip it around a few times with your hands to coat.
Cover the bowl with a plate to keep the moisture in and let rise for 30 minutes (hopefully in a warm place). It should double in size.
20 minutes into the rise, preheat the oven to 450F.
When ready to bake the pizza, put 2 10-inch cast iron skillets or one large 2-burner cast iron griddle on medium heat.
Add a fat like refined coconut oil (use the code STEWARDSHIP for 10% off at that site!) to the pan and push it around to cover the whole surface. Place the dough in the pan, and with wet fingers, quickly press the dough out to the edges of the pan, pushing a bit up at the edge to form a crust. It gets a little hot, so move fast! Not a job suited for children or wimps!
If you don’t like moving quickly, are afraid of the heat, or really want a thinner crust, use a rolling pin to roll out the crust on a flexible cutting board dusted with flour. Flip or shift the dough onto the heated cast iron. (Good luck! It’s very possible but try not drop it…)
Set a timer for 2 minutes for the dough to sit over medium heat on the stovetop.
Choose:
Quickly put the sauce and topping on the pizza while it’s on the stovetop, then bake for 7-10 minutes, watching for the cheese to brown. If you can’t get the toppings on before the 2-minute timer, turn the burner off while you finish.
Pre-bake the crust without toppings (after the 2 minutes on the stovetop) for 5-10 minutes, watching the top closely. When it begins to brown, pull the crusts out of the oven. (If you can’t fit the pans side-by-side on the middle rack, put one on top and one on the bottom and switch after 3 minutes, then 3 minutes again, to make sure the crust doesn’t over-brown on the bottom.) Turn the oven off and set it to broil on high. Add sauce and toppings to the pre-baked crust, then broil for 1-3 minutes, just to brown the cheese to your liking.
Notes
If you don’t have cast iron…that’s so sad! You should get some. But in the meantime, this recipe isn’t dead to you. Just use a pre-heated baking stone and spread carefully with wet fingers OR put on parchment paper on a baking sheet (but you may have to increase the bake time).

Do I Need a Grain Mill?
If you don’t have a grain mill, also sad. BUT you should be able to make this recipe with commercially milled flour as well, I just didn’t test it as such. (Commercially milled flour is usually lighter than home-milled grains because some of the bran and germ is sifted out, so if anything, the crust might get tastier.)

These Shops Think Edible Cookie Dough is a Sweet Idea for a Small Business
A few months ago, I noticed a “coming soon” sign for No Baked Cookie Dough on the outside of a former restaurant in Nashville. “A cookie dough store? Is this a thing?” I wondered. A few weeks ago when the shop opened and a long line of customers were waiting to get inside, I was convinced, “this is definitely a thing.”
(Update: See footnote.)
Uncooked (or “edible”) cookie dough shops are appearing across the country from New York to L.A. (A list of examples is below.) Some of the shops offer dough for cooking (described as “raw”) but the concept of these shops is the guilty pleasure kind of dough eating you enjoyed when your mom let you lick the cookie dough bowl. Side note: to meet FDA guidelines, the cookie dough treats are prepared without eggs to prevent salmonella risk and some of the dough uses special types of flour for those who are on gluten-free diets.
If you’re still having trouble picturing what the product is, think of a cup of “cookie dough ice cream” at a gourmet ice cream shop, but without the ice cream. In fact, that’s exactly what inspired the founder of Unbaked to start her business.
Unbaked | Owner Olivia Hops was standing in line one day at Coldstone Creamery and taking note of an ice cream flavor called “cookie dough.” “I thought, ‘what about forgetting ice cream and going straight cookie dough? While primarily an ecommerce business, there is an Unbaked Dessert Shop in Woodland Hills, California.

No Baked Cookie Dough | Originally from Louisville, Megan Beaven moved to Nashville to study at Belmont University’s noted entrepreneurship and music business programs. Merging her love of cookie dough and her entrepreneurial spirit, Megan opened a No Baked online store in April 2017 and quickly added a pop-up store where she sold cookie dough treats at events around the city. By the end of the year, a permanent store opened and instant lines appeared.

Dō | The New York Times describes Dō’s “brick-thick cookie dough” (as being something) just like grandma and your mother used to make. Founder Kristen Tomlan says her cookie dough epiphany occurred during a girls’ weekend in Philadelphia when the group stopped by a cookie shop for a sweet-tooth fix. “My inner child craved the unbaked dough. We bought a tub of frozen cookie dough — intended for baking — and we passed around the tub, loving every bite and laughing about the lack of cookie dough designed solely for eating in its pure form. From there, DŌ was born.
