i think it is way funnier to imagine that mulder actually was tailing a suspect into a x rated film showing before he called scully in 5x17. i think the writers were trying to be funny ("ha! look, while scully cries over dead children, mulder is thinking of SEX! what a silly man!"), but in addition to the already established gag of him doing something that looks pornographic but is actually case research, it is simply far more comedic to imagine him actually on the job and having to sit through that.

Thoughts on the character motivations of secret relationships in AU fanfics...

I've been reading a lot of fanfiction, a lot of AU fanfiction, and something I've seen a few times now is Aziraphale wanting to keep his relationship with Crowley secret because it could potentially jeopardize his career if people knew. (Usually he's in the closet, but maybe there's something about Crowley specifically that makes it scandalous (or both).) This invariably leads to angst until Aziraphale decides to come out after all, and then they live out and proud together, happily ever after. Which, great! But—

I've just realized why this trope kind of bothers me: It isn't true to Aziraphale's character.

Because wanting to stay in heaven's good books isn't his primary motivation for keeping his friendship with Crowley a secret. I mean sure, obviously he doesn't want them to know, but his bigger worry has always been for Crowley and his safety. What if his side found out?

Look at him in the Globe scene, looking at Crowley with such fear: "If Hell finds out...they'll destroy you."

That the secrecy is all just to keep his own public persona clean? No, it doesn't fit.

I have my quibbles with Shotgun Wedding, but this is something it got right, that the relationship is a danger to both their careers, and more to Crowley's than Aziraphale's.

Tangentially, another fic I was reading got me thinking about Crowley's role in this setup. Usually there's strife due to Crowley not being okay with being Aziraphale's dirty secret (which tbf is a legit understandable stance, and a great catalyst for Aziraphale's journey to self-acceptance), but in this one, while Aziraphale had the thing thinking that being with Crowley would ruin his career, Crowley's role was subverted. Instead of Crowley stepping away, Aziraphale pushed him away, assuming Crowley wouldn't want to be his secret, that it wouldn't be fair to him. Until eventually, Crowley snaps, calls him an idiot, and that he doesn't care if Aziraphale is in the closet or not! That he's okay with being Aziraphale's secret. (I hesitate to name the fic because this is a spoiler for the climactic revelations in it, but it is on my fanfic master rec list and if you like I'll tell you in DM.)

That blew my mind. It was so opposite to the other characterizations and yet felt so right for Crowley. He never cared that he had to see Aziraphale on the DL, so long as he got to see him, and he wouldn't dream of trying to make Aziraphale compromise his standing for his sake. "I'm not going to tell anybody. Are you?"

Anyway, all this to say that while I understand the plot setup and why it's used, looking past the surface level, it doesn't actually fit for either of these characters.

i don't understand how all the fo4 companions are bi, they never call themselves bi and at least with the companions I've had, they never mention attraction to the same sex, only the opposite (when not referring to the player character). obviously that doesn't mean someone can't be bi, but this just seems more like lazy playersexual stuff instead of actual representation. if there were straight and gay and bi characters that'd be like actual representation but without anyone having a preference or mentioning anything about their sexuality it kind of falls flat in my view. it's not representation at that point, it's laziness/pandering. I'm not trying to be rude, (I understand that I probably am but I'm trying my best not to be) I just genuinely don't understand. is there canon material I've missed or something?

I hope my reply doesn't come across as rude, but I genuinely hate people using "playersexual" to downplay the inclusion of queer characters, it feels a lot like its bordering on mspec erasure when I hear this argument

The sole survivor is unfortunately* either a man or a woman in Bethesda's narrative, but the handful of romancable companions can fall for them as either gender anyways. It makes no sense not to acknowledge them as mspec when games only just recently started allowing queer romance options for the player

Like, literally one of my favorite games, Harvest Moon: Animal Parade is still strictly only allowed m/f options for the player and was released in 2008, which in hindsight isn't even that long ago. So I'd rather accept it as canon than not, being "lazily written" doesn't change the fact they're potentially attracted to the sole survivor regardless of their gender

The other interesting aspect is Ace of Swords in her obstacle position. I like to think this is about coming face to face with Raven again after learning the truth about Summer, which obviously will be pretty upsetting no matter what Raven says. It's going to open up a lot of potential avenues for their relationship

The rest to me refers to her new relationship with Blake - she's currently feeling on cloud 9 embodied in the 10 of Cups, and will use their new, open and balanced relationship going forward (2 of Cups and 3 of Pentacles)

I am always impressed by your analysis and attention to detail and absolute to connect so many dots on here, I wonder if you are some kind of academic or librarian in real life… where and how do you hone these skills?

Ironically you nailed it in your guess - I'm a librarian, and I used to be an academic. Neither of those are actually why I enjoy this so much though, since you can be one or both of those and still be any kind of person at all (and I have met many people in both spheres who don't like this kind of thing whatsoever). On the other hand my Master's thesis was partially about analysing iconography and meaning through artwork, which I think helped a lot at the beginning.

But in saying that I would also put all of those facts away in a box and say they're not at all required for this kind of thing. It's mostly just being interested in it and looking into it often enough to find it fun. If you find a series (whether it's a manga, anime, book, tv show, etc) that plays around with imagery, the best way to practice would be to think about what you think the imagery means and share your thoughts with others. It's all you really need to do, and it can be a delight both when others agree AND when others have completely different takes. You can learn a lot just by finding out the different ways people use symbols and metaphors and how they change depending on who's reading it and why.
