United States of America
Federal Hall was used as the first capital building of the United States. Previously named Pierre L’Enfant, the building was remodeled and renamed into Federal Hall. The current Federal Hall is not the original as the original building was demolished. The current Federal Hall opened up at a later date in 1842. This building is a very important piece of history due to the documents that were presented and led the pathway for the United States that we know today. The Bill of Rights was introduced in this very building. These first 10 amendments are the foundation of the United States. These rights to Freedom of Speech and Press, the right to bear arms, no soldier shall enter a home without consent, and so many more. James Madison wrote the basic human needs and protections for generations to come and introduced the Bill in this building. On July 18, 1776. On the steps of Federal Hall people from all over gathered to hear the proclamation of the Declaration of Independence. Followed by taking the King’s coat of arms off the walls and burning them. It also covered another long lineage of important American history that is still practiced to this day, our first President. George Washington took the oath of becoming the first President of the United States of America in Federal Hall. The new Federal Hall is opened to this day, it has survived for over 150 years and is currently being used as a museum. The Museum is open seven days a week and admission is free. The National Park service overlooks the preservation of this marble building, still letting it be seen and explored by the public. The Federal Hall building stands for democracy, freedom, and is the foundation of the United States and the ideas that came to fruition because of it.

To your anon asking about TTB promises. She promised no second wedding, no male pronouns or male love interests on Lover, a coming out, Karlie leaving in August, no Josh at holidays, no way they go to awards, absolutely would she not include him in her documentary because it woul be about coming out. The list is rather long. The truth is people left over stopped calling her out on always being wrong. And every month for the last 2 years dont worry, its almost over the girls are fine.
Wow. Great memory.
Let’s list all of TTBs lies, promises and predictions that never came true. For posterity.
TTB promised there would be:
1. No Joshlie wedding. At all. And no second Joshlie wedding. (Both happened!)
- in fact the plan, according to TTB was: to gently introduce Kaylor to the public.
- announce engagement > call off engagement > have Taylor be seen providing emotional support to a heartbroken Karlie > after a while, explain that spending time together amid this upset made them realize they were more than just friends!
Oops. Never happened.
2. No male pronouns on Lover (several songs with male pronouns!)
3. No male love interests on Lover (clearly a male interest in Lover. And no, London Boy isn’t satire. It’s tongue in cheek)
4. Karlie being “free” in August each and every year. (and many, many more times)
5. No Josh at holidays.
(Yet somehow they seem to be together for thanksgiving and NYE and several Jewish holidays every single year.)
6. Joe and Taylor not attending awards shows together (so far they’ve attended: Golden Globes, Cats premiere, and NME awards)
7. Joe not being included in the documentary (Taylor literally runs into his arms backstage)
8. The documentary would be about Taylor coming out
I remember (and edited to add other peoples recollections)
9. Taylor was supposed to come out after Rep tour was over.
10. Taylor was supposed to come out the day she announced her new single “ME!” In fact, the announcement was meant to be her coming out, but instead was her new single.
11. Joe would be gone before Rep Tour
12. Joe would be gone after Rep Tour.
13. Joe would be gone before Lover Promo
14. Joe would be gone after Lover release.
15. Karlie would be free from Josh literally too many times to count. She always says that the contract is up in August. Then she says Karlie re-ups.
16. Taylor was going to come out on the last day of Pride month but scrapped those plans and instead released her statement about Scooter and Scott. That the masters changed everything so she couldn’t come out.
Now, had she intended to come out, and changed her mind that very last day upon learning of the master sales, she would’ve had to:
- add 4 new songs about a male
- chang all pronouns on lover from “her” to “him”
- remanufacturing every copy (how many DNAs did that need)
- create and chang diary entries
- all this would’ve had to be done whiles Taylor spent the first week of July with her friends on vacation. And while Karlie was on a yacht with Scooter, posting several instagrams documenting it.
- Then she went straight into filming ‘Lover’ video with a man. All this in a matter of a week or two, while on vacation, right before Lover came out. (Thanks to the anon for help!)
17. She claimed Karlie never followed Joe, when in fact, she did after K’s Rep concert. A week later, she unfollowed him. Also her sisters and Josh unfollowed Taylor in that same time frame.
18. She claims that when a beard wears blue, a breakup will occur and Taylor will be free of her contract. That Taylor plans it this way. TTB has said the inevitable breakup is going to happen when Joe wears blue numerous times yet this has never come to fruition.
19. Any time there is an article about Joshlie or Joe and Taylor, ttb claims its ALWAYS “seeding” a breakup. Yet, the breakup never, ever comes. (And no one in entertainment uses the phrase “seeding”. That’s a pure conspiracy theorist term. Like “crisis actor”).
20. She once promised a nervous anon that Josh and Karlie would never actually marry. They’d only be faux engaged to make it all seem real.
21. Claimed that Karlie and Josh didn’t go to New Zealand together over the New Year. Said Josh went alone and Karlie only flew in one day to take all the pics with him- in multiple clothing changes- to get all the pics necessary for the “stunt”. Even though everyone outside of Kaylorland already believes they’re a married couple and the “stunt” got zero publicity.
22. TTB claimed many times no beard would ever attend an important event or red carpet with Taylor. Then Joe went to the Golden Globes with her, then the Cats premiere, and then the NME awards. Oops! Wrong each and every time.
23. When Joe and Taylor vacationed in the Turks and Caicos TTB claimed Joe was flown in for a quick photoshoot and flown right back out. Except the next day, he was still there and there were new pictures.
24. Claimed for MONTHS after the Joshlie wedding that it was a “photoshoot”, not a wedding. That it would soon show up in Vogue. Then it was Vogue Brazil. (The wedding was never in a magazine)
25. She also claimed it was all a giant ad for Dior. The photoshoot would be one big advertisement for Dior. (The wedding was never an ad anywhere for Dior)
26. After several Vogue magazines came and went after, TTB claimed that Josh was having the article and photoshoot put on hold so that they could release it at a time that Trump made a big gaffe and Josh would need good press. The idea being that if Trump messes up, this somehow reflects badly on Josh, though it never has.
27. TTB and Kaylors claim that the reason why Karlie and Taylor stopped hanging out in public was so as not to tarnish Taylor’s reputation by being associated with Trump. Yet, Kelle went backstage at Rep after Trump was elected.
Anyone who knows about magazines or has seen the documentary The September Issue knows that the magazine layout is planned months in advance and articles and photo shoots are put in in a timely manner. Someone like Josh would have no bearing on getting to hold it back. (The wedding never showed up in any magazine and Trump made gaffes constantly).
28. TTB also claimed that they were no longer being seen in public anymore so that the public would start to ask and wonder why they weren’t “friends” anymore. Which would “seed” a coming out story.
29. Ttb claims she’ll have definitive proof this Monday, 9/7/20/, in the form of “tea” she’s been dangling in front of her followers for months now, that will prove the existence of Kaylor.
And she posted a submission that proved absolutely nothing! Just a screenshot of Karlies insta story from May that shows the reflection of one open white umbrella and one closed white umbrella. Apparently Taylor has two white umbrella near her pool in Beverly Hills. Ttb believes this is definitive proof that Karlie and Taykor have been together in LA for months.
This was wholly underwhelming and easily disputable. Taylor’s jet has been in Utah, with Joe posting a few pics of him hiking there. Her jet has also been in RI. Then the jet went to England. While the jet doesn’t prove Taylor wasn’t in BH the whole time, it sure does make it much more likely than a reflection in glass of an umbrella.
30 TTB claims that josh posted an Instagram on 9/3 of a sunset to indicate the sun setting on his relationship with Karlie. A message sent to Kaylors. No divorce as of yet!
31. Going along with the above, TTB also claimed that she expects Joshlie to announce their divorce on 9/4/20 because it’s the slowest in the news cycle. A Friday afternoon before a holiday weekend. Yet, no divorce news and Trump calling fallen soldiers “lovers and suckers” is dominating the headlines.
32. Prior to the Kushner biography being released TTB predicted/promised that it would mention Josh’s homosexual proclivities in some way: the bearding or Mikey. And at the very least, it would paint him to be the giant criminal that she claims he is.
Instead it did nothing of the sort. It only talked about how strong his love for Karlie was. That despite his parents being unkind and unaccepting to her for several years, he stuck it out with her. It also addressed her conversion to Judaism.
33. Ttb likes to claim that Karlie never converted to Judaism. She says that because Karlie has never spoken the exact words “I converted” that it means she hasn’t. Despite the fact that many Jewish people have told her that when Karlie told Andy Cohen that she “joined the tribe” that, was, in fact, how Jewish people say they converted.
Karlie has also spoken at length in interviews and her own musings about her conversion. Ttb still refutes this and sometimes will post anons who write in questionable and anti Semitic references.
34. There was a period of time where TTB claimed that Josh needed Karlie as a beard in order to get an inheritance from an old aunt of his. This aunt stipulated in their will that he MUST be married to a woman in order to collect the money. Shockingly (to no one) TTB started claiming this right after josh and Karlie got married.
A few months later, the aunt and the inheritance disappeared never to be spoken of again. Which was absurd to begin with considering Josh is reportedly worth $800 million. Which could be off considerably, but even if it is? Even if he’s only worth $100 million? Yeah, he’s good. He doesn’t need an aunts inheritance.
35. These days (September of 2020) TTB is claiming that Karlie is staying with Josh in the contact for bearding willingly. This is a drastic change of narrative from years past when she claimed he was essentially blackmailing her to stay. For the Aunt inheritance, for not telling the world her and Taylor’s secrets, etc.
**** this hasn’t been updated in a few months. It’s now Dec. 1st. I’ll do my best to fill in a couple more below soon. There’s been a handful or two of lies that need to be recorded.****
36. People Mag announces that sources close to Karlie say she’s pregnant with Josh’s kid. Ttb refuses to believe it until Karlie herself confirms it, though in the past she has specifically stated that People is the one mag you can trust as publicists use it as a vehicle to get the truth out about their client.
36. Ttb stated emphatically and multiple times that IF Karlie is pregnant it CANNOT be a Kaylor baby because it would not tarnished by having a Kushner last name and being tied to that “organized crime” family. Nope. Taylor is in no way involved.
And now that Karlie has confirmed the pregnancy, what do uou know? Ttb conveniently changes her time, forgets all she’s said in the past and seems to be firmly on the “oh, it’s totally a Karlie/Tayklor baby. I thought so all along”.
Now, Karlie is there willingly. And when an anon asked whyC her answer was “it’s all part of the narrative.” As if that’s a sufficient answer.
37. TTB said Joe and Taylor’s career paths would never intertwine.
And now they’ve written 5 songs together. One on which he played the piano too.
There’s a lot more especially about Karlies pregnancy but I don’t have the time or energy to fill it in right now. Back soon to do it.
Anyone else remember anything specific? Let’s come up with a comprehensive list.

Back to the Burt Feb 2019
Oreti Beach New Zealand (8 Feb 2019)
Readers of this blog will recall that in Aug-Oct 2016 Megan and I took Meg's Australian based Moto Guzzi Lemans 1000 to Europe along with 47 other Australian registered Moto Guzzis. Including pillions, more than 60 of us took off from Melbourne bound for the Netherlands where we picked up our bikes and toured. On that occasion Megan and I travelled some 10,000 kilometres across Western Europe and most of those kilometres were not quick efficient kilometres on autobahns but rather meandering back roads so we really got to appreciate Western Europe and enjoy the bike and each other.
I declared at that time that it was the best holiday I had ever been on. Megan and I enjoyed the motorcycle tour of Europe so much that on the day we were obliged to return our black Moto Guzzi Lemans 1000 to its container bound for home in Melbourne that we purchased a red Moto Guzzi Lemans 1000 in Europe to leave in Europe so that we could repeat the pleasure of touring Europe on a classic old Moto Guzzi annually.
The Black Lemans on which we toured Europe 2016 (22 Sep 2016)
The sad day we packed the black lemans up to send her home after spending our best holiday yet riding her around Western Europe. (27 Sep 2016)
After sadly packing away the black lemans we cheered ourselves up by buying the red lemans to leave in Europe so we could continue the best holidays ever for years to come. (27 Sep 2016)
Given our enthusiasm for the 2016 trip with its high point of celebrating the 95th birthday of Moto Guzzi at the factory on the shore of Lake Como at Mandello del Lario, it is hardly surprising that when Teo Lamers advised he was organising a tour last year (February 2018) of New Zealand that Megan and I again loaded the black Moto Guzzi Lemans 1000 into a container this time heading out from Melbourne Australia and bound for Auckland New Zealand. The highlights of this tour would be riding from the top of New Zealand's North Island to the bottom of its South Island (Invercargill) where we would celebrate the Southern Hemisphere's largest Motorcycle event, the Burt Monro Challenge.
Riverton South Island New Zealand (8 Feb 2019)
Again Megan and I had a magnificent time and here is where a pattern in Megan's and my behaviour began to emerge. As the motorcycle tour of New Zealand came to a close, Megan and I began to think of ways we could have a New Zealand based motor cycle sitting a couple of days ride from Invercargill. Yes, if we could hatch this cunning plan, we would have not only all of our Australian based motorcycles with us here in Melbourne but we would also have two motorcycles based outside of Australia with one being in Nijmegen Netherlands near the centre of Western Europe and the other a couple of days ride from Invercargill on the South Island of New Zealand. If this plan could come to fruition, not only would we have motorcycles on which we could tour the oldest continent of earth (Australia) but would could also have a motorcycle on one of the most highly populated and culturally and geographically diverse continents on earth (Europe) as well as that we could have a further motorcycle based in the true antipodean outpost with its winding mountain roads, glaciers, earthquakes and an old fashion culture of living and motorcycle racing that reminds me of the best of Australia during the 1970s.
As time passed a plan emerged. Our favourite New Zealand motorcycle racer Vince Burrell of Guzzi Café who races a 1970s round barrel Guzzi across New Zealand was moving his business to Christchurch which is located two days ride from Invercargill on the South Island of New Zealand. Vince who is a great laconic New Zealand character whose needs in life are articulated simply in his desire to be genuine, decent and to ride motorcycles fast on a race track. Yes Vince agreed we could store our motorcycle at his new motorcycle workshop in Christchurch New Zealand year round. All that remained was to secure the right motorcycle.
If past behaviour had been anything to go by we should have purchased a Moto Guzzi Lemans 1000 MKV. Why not I already had three of them and clearly love the bike but somehow the conditions on the South Island of New Zealand when they spoke to me said something different. The pace of life on the South Island of New Zealand is slower than Europe and Melbourne Australia. Of course it had to be a Moto Guzzi but which model??? I can be very fussy when it comes to bikes and in that respect I am no different to every other motorcycle enthusiast on the planet. I only like old bikes, being bikes which are designed before 1985 and to me they must have carburettors and be air cooled. I realised all of these features are old dinosaurs which have been superseded, much like myself, by far better and more efficient models but my preference is my preference.
Again it wasn't long before the 'correct' answer became evident. New Zealand is a large archipelago with great mountains so a large reasonably reliable engine would be essential but the South Island is also a place that moves slowly (in a nice way) and harps back to bygone eras from the 60s and 70s when the world was a simpler place. Yes, I would have the very first model Moto Guzzi which had the simple transverse twin cylinder engine and even old drum brakes. The first model V700, it would have enough torque to transport Megan, me and our luggage but would lop along slowly in a way that would not be out of step with the slow lopping pace of life that exists in the South Island.
A good place to start, a 1968 Moto Guzzi V700. The before shot.
Progress? 11 Aug 2018
Coming together, thanks Teo & Tony (24 Nov 2018)
A team effort, thanks Andy and Teo (1 Dec 2018) Time is running out.
I even knew the perfect place to source this motorcycle. I knew Teo Lamers of Yea Victoria Australia had a couple of these in his collection. I had seen a perfect red and silver V700 there during the preceding year.
After a discussion with Teo a V700 Guzzi was mine and given the need for this bike to be exceptionally reliable despite its age, Teo and I had agreed on a full nut and bolt restification that would see all mechanical parts of this bike disassembled and where necessary refreshed.
Thanks Teo the result is amazing and so are you.
Thanks to Vince of Guzzi Café, Teo Lamers of TLM and Mark Townsen we would have a New Zealand based beauty awaiting us in Christchurch. The only thing we could now do to make the New Zealand Guzzi experience better would be to share it with great friends.
Ready to be shipped to New Zealand and just in time for the Burt Munro. (6 Jan 2019)
The longest close friendship that I have enjoyed during my lifetime is the relationship I have with my younger brother Daryl. Daryl is almost four years younger than me and since we were both able to speak in early childhood we have both had an informal and sometimes formal pact to annoy and irritate those around us to our own selfish amusement. It is true we have been detested by many over the years for this trait but it is also many others have loved us and enjoyed watching our craft. I also owe Daryl because it was he who introduced me to Megan all those years ago.
Not only have I enjoyed a great relationship with Daryl over the years but also back in the eighties when we were young Daryl married Arlene who also became a great friend to Megan and me. Since that time we have lived in proximate neighbourhoods and our current houses even adjoin each other's. All four of us grew up together having similar aged children who socialised and went to school together. Even now our 30 year old daughters are currently sharing a house. Our friendship has been a true lifetime relationship.
The final and significant point to our relationship with regards to this blog is that Daryl and I share a passion for motorcycles and more particularly Moto Guzzis In fact Daryl already had a 1968 V700 Moto Guzzi. So the next step was clear. We would invite Daryl and Arlene to relocate their 1968 V700 Moto Guzzi with our 1968 V700 Moto Guzzi at Guzzi Café in Christchurch New Zealand. Vince Burrell of Guzzi Café agreed and the deal was done. Let the Buccaneering Brundells Big Bash across the Tasman begin.
Buccaneering Brundells at the airport. 3 Feb 2019
There is that book which everyone has heard of but few people have actually read called Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. I fall into this category where I imagine I practice the art but really I have never read the book so have no idea if that is true. To me the idea of the book is the pleasure I get playing around with my old classic motorcycles keeping them on the road and in the process of doing that I push all the pressures of modern day life out of my head. While I ride and maintain our stable of classic old motorcycles there is no space in my head to worry about the pressures of life including what others think or what is happening at work or with finances etc.
This trip falls into this category. As we ride our bikes from Christchurch to Invercargill we need to iron out those little niggles that beset bikes which are older than 50 years but have many new components fitted. Are all the recently installed nuts and bolts still tight? It is common for rebuilt old motorcycles to vibrate a few nuts and bolts loose as the bikes bed in. For us the newly installed points inside my bike's distributor did what points often do when they are new and that is they close up faster than normal as the felt block settles in. For me this caused the bike to run very roughly and unevenly. The unevenness was exacerbated after running out of petrol as this bike has no reserve (I found out the hard way) and presumably the carbies picked up some dirt from the bottom of the fuel tank. The bike was running terribly and it appeared we would not make Invercargill for the Burt Munro Challenge. Would we be stranded on the side of the road? At first I thought maybe I had the choke in the wrong position as the Italian bike has two settings on the choke being A and C. A meaning aperto or open and C meaning chiuso or closed. I started to doubt which was open or closed and as the bike ran marginally better with the choke aperto I left it on for a while. This improved the situation a little but a texting communication with Teo confirmed that when the engine is warm the choke should be chiuso. So I closed it but the bike ran worse and at times it could not even sustain speeds of 70 kilometres per hour. At first I cleaned the carburettor float bowls where I found sediment and in the left hand carburettor even lumps of rubbish. After a couple of cleans it began to improve but it wasn't until I got to Invercargill that Teo suggested I check the points. Of course, new points have a tendency to close more quickly when first installed. It has been so many years since I have had a car or bike with old fashion points and I had forgotten how quickly they wear out or simply require adjustment. I opened the points and the problem was resolved quickly.
Side of the road repair to Daryl’s bike. Makeshift gear lever. (10 Feb 2019)
The other early feature of the bike which needed to be ironed out was the propensity which became evident immediately after we took off for the first time. The bike had an unnerving weave at speeds below 15 km/h. At first I was very concerned but it quickly became evident that the issue disappeared above 15 km/h. My first attempt at diagnosis was tyre pressure and readers of this block will recall the issues that initially beset Megan and me when we took off in Holland 2016 with an almost unrideable bike. Once tyre pressure was ruled out I recalled that I had left the rear suspension settings on the softest setting while riding the bike two-up with a lot of luggage most of which is up high and out the back in the top box.
I upped the suspension rating and the problem reduced significantly although did not disappear altogether. At speeds below 15 km/h it would be little more than an unnerving inconvenience. Later I also realised that the new Ikon rear shock absorbers installed on the bike had a preload setting which I later also changed, again things improved but some weaving is still present below 15 km/h. Oh well, something for me to work on over time.

2011 - Wuss - The Demos From Hell
***Download a zip file of The Demos From Hell by Wuss here:***
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sKsV0aMEKYG3daEM-T5vnvrYC1SROs01/view?usp=sharing
In the Summer of 2009 I wanted to start a “real band”. Dables was still just a solo project at the time, DAN had just started but had a specific direction of writing novelty punk songs and my experimental noise rock band Closet Monster had just broken up. I was still hanging out with Alex (guitarist from Closet Monster) all the time and we decided we wanted to start a new band together with the idea of it being a “real” band that just played heavy rock. No more drum machines or experimental noise jams or gimmicky bullshit, this time we wanted a full four piece band with a real drummer. I was set to play rhythm guitar and vocals with Alex on lead. We wanted it to be a stoner rock with a psychedelic and heavy edge but not full-on metal or psyche rock, but somewhere in between. We were heavily influenced by stuff like Tad, early Flaming Lips (first 5 or 6 Wuss songs we wrote were directly inspired by the first 4 Flaming Lips albums), Cave In, Electric Wizard, Helmet, The Melvins, Neurosis, Clutch, Thin Lizzy...
So I set to work at slowly writing songs for this new psychedelic stoner rock band we wanted to start even though we had no bassist or drummer. I wanted to wait until we had written some good material before even trying to seriously find a drummer or bassist. In order to remember the songs, I started making demos with *ZERO* intentions of anyone besides the band hearing them and they were to be used as reference points only. I had also decided to call the project Wuss. No reason really, just thought it was a great name for a stoner rock band and after searching online there were no other bands with that name so Wuss it was!
Both the writing of demos and the search for a drummer went extremely slowly with our jobs and spending the majority of free time working on Dables or DAN stuff. In other words we were lazy as fuck when it came to Wuss. Many messages sent online to potential band mates but nothing ever came to fruition. Our biggest hurdle was not having a good practice space since by Fall 2009 I had moved back in with my parents and Alex was still living with his, both in neighborhoods where loud band practices would of probably got the cops called on us repeatedly. So whoever was to be our drummer had to also provide a practice space of some type and ALSO want to play the kind of psychedelic heavy stoner rock we wanted to play too so we were kind of asking a lot. Before I knew it an entire year had passed since originally getting the idea to start Wuss, and we had still not found a drummer or a bassist but I had amassed over 20 rough, mainly instrumental demos that unfortunately very few of which Alex had even recorded any of his lead guitar parts on.
It wasn’t until November 2010 that our old band mate from Death Mullet, Cody Blackwell moved back to town that things started finally happening. We got in touch with Jake Garrett (also from Death Mullet) to see if he wanted to jam again since Cody had moved back to town. My initial plan was to try to coerce them into joining Wuss but Jake was more interested in trying to do a “24 hour album”, meaning he wanted us to try to record an entire album in 24 hours. So I ended up teaching them a handful of Dables songs that had never been played with a band before instead since they were easier to learn and were completely written. Most of the Wuss songs still didn’t have any lyrics and they just didn’t seem that interested in hearing my Wuss demos anyway. They were both more familiar with Dables songs like Boredumb and Love Headache. Since we weren’t doing Wuss (yet), Alex didn’t come to these jam sessions. We got together and jammed 4 or 5 times and on Dec 5, 2010 spent the whole day recording 10 tracks for the “24 hour album” and called it “Dables & The Fountain Inn Jam” which I will go into more on the next blog entry but eventually this “hey man, let’s try to record an album in 24 hours” idea that Jake had evolved into Dables becoming a real band that is still going 11 years later!
Anywho, I was still somewhat trying to get Wuss off the ground with other people since I wasn’t sure where the “24 hour album” thing was going to go with Jake and Cody or how long it would last. But I hadn’t given up yet because I knew some of these songs had a TON of potential to be really good if re-recorded with a band, so a few years later several of the songs from the Wuss demos became Dables songs and eventually the full band version of Dables evolved to become very close to the original sound I had envisioned for Wuss: psychedelic grunge/stoner rock. If you want to know the way I heard these songs in my head, check out “Intergalactic Death Farm” by Dables which is pretty damn close to how Wuss was supposed to sound, only without Alex’s guitar leads. More on that in future blog entries.
The Demos From Hell never received any kind of official release. Most of the songs were uploaded to myspace as soon as they were recorded and around the time I released Stuff Volume 2 by Dables in February 2011, I also compiled all the demos for Wuss into a collection I called “The Demos From Hell” and uploaded them to a file sharing site called megaupload (I think?) which I shared on all my social media sites online to see if anyone was interested in learning these songs with a full band...unfortunately it never happened. By the time 2012 rolled around I started focusing on Dables and had officially given up on the idea of Wuss entirely and deleted the demos from the Internet. So aside from myspace, having the link to the megaupload zip file (which was only up for a year or so), or having one of the literally less than 20 burned CD-R copies that I made for friends or potential band mates, these songs have been completely unavailable to the public until right now.
Since these are mostly instrumentals, I don’t have much to say in a track-by-track breakdown like I’ve done in other blog entries, so I’ll just comment on a few of them.
“We’re All Fucked” This song will *FINALLY* be released in a new recording on the upcoming album from Dables titled “108 Years”. It’s a song I’ve been trying to resurrect ever since Dables starting writing heavier material around 2013-2014 or so and it took until the end of 2021 for this song to reach it’s full potential and be released with a full band playing it. It just didn’t feel right re-recording and releasing this song on any of my albums until “108 Years”, it just would’ve felt out of place on any of our other albums...This song was directly inspired by The Melvins, specifically their Houdini album. I wrote a heavy riff and some nonsensical lyrics that had uncomfortable words & negative imagery. “Open up a gas can and take yourself a big whiff” was from something this kid said to me in 9th grade. I remember him turning around in his desk and telling me about how when he can’t get any beer or weed he would just “go out in the garage and stick your head in the gas can and take like 10 huge gulps of air”. I found this hilarious and sad. No clue what became of that kid.
“Psuedoslacker” I had actually written the main riff for this song for Closet Monster on the bass. At every one of our shows we would jam out on that riff. Alex liked the riff so much he took it and fleshed it out and turned it into this recording (he plays every instrument on this track) which I think he wanted to use for his solo project World of Giants instead of for Wuss. However things were pretty open and free-flowing back then and I figured since I technically came up with that main riff and it was something we both “owned”, that we could turn this into a Wuss song, so after he gave me a copy of the track, I recorded some vocals on top of it without involving him which I now realize kind of rubbed him the wrong way although I do remember him being perfectly fine with this becoming a Wuss song once we got a full band together. I think it was more he was annoyed that I put my not-so-great-and-too-loud vocals on top of it, but I never considered this particular version of this track to be anything but a demo for us anyway which was merely a reference point for learning the song with a band. Makes me very sad that that never happened with this track, it’s one of my all time favorite songs that Alex ever recorded and deserves to played with a full band.
“A Sweet, Satisfying Death”, “Songs About Girls”, “Xenocide Doesn’t Bother Me”, “Looks Like Rain”, and “A Resounding No” These 5 tracks all eventually ended up as Dables songs, all on our 2019 album “Intergalactic Death Farm” in their final versions. If you wanna hear crappy instrumental demos of those awesome songs from Intergalactic Death Farm, well here ya go! Once I get to the blog entry for that album, I’ll do a more detailed analysis of these songs.
“Chainsmoke”, “Small Talk”, “Way Too Late”, and “The Moth” Have all come close to being turned into Dables songs and still may eventually if they can be re-written better. I haven’t completely given up on these songs being re-recorded someday, but so far haven’t been able to get them to sound right with the band so they remain as lo-fi instrumental demos for now.
The last thing I have to say is that I don’t know who drew the cover art. It’s just something I randomly found online and slapped Wuss on it...sorry I used your artwork without permission whoever you are, but rest assured I didn’t make a single penny from this hahaha...

Game of Thrones star swaps Westeros for North Pole as Scottish actor takes on Santa Claus role Iain Glen is making a guest talking appearance on a special festive edition of his daughter’s favourite animation, Nella the Princess Knight, on kids’ channel Nick Jr. By Brian McIver, 15 Dec 2017 (x) Excerpt:
On Nella the Princess Knight ...he insists the only person on his mind when he was offered the gig was his four-year-old daughter Juliet. Glen, who also has another daughter, Mary, and a son, Finlay, revealed: “Juliet is obsessed with Nella the Princess Knight. This is a particularly lovely show and I’ve really enjoyed being a part of it. I’m not planning on telling Juliet so I’ll see if she realises that it’s me playing Santa when we sit down to watch it.” ...He added: “I would say, in some way, my Santa is quite typical. He’s very buoyant and jolly. He wants to make sure that the children receive all their presents, too, so, in some ways, he’s a traditional Santa – in personality and character.” “But, of course, what’s so special about Nella the Princess Knight is that it’s taking something that is familiar from history – the idea of knights. Putting in a wonderful girl as the leading character – who is a princess but also becomes the Knight – is a modern take on it. The Santa I play is quite up-to-date to fit in with the show, even though he has the same characteristics that you’d expect from a traditional Santa figure.” He added: “Christmas is such a big part of our lives and our psyche so there is no need for me to get into the festive spirit as such.“It’s also about having that children’s mentality. If you watch or listen to them, they’re mostly full of energy. Nothing is minor, everything is in a major key and is incredibly important. Things are wonderfully funny or horribly sad and that’s what we do as actors – we get to be children our entire lives.” “Most adults have to leave it behind but that’s what we do. We pretend at being people and that’s mostly what kids like doing all the way through their childhood.” On Delicious He admits he was delighted, but surprised, to get a call for series two, considering his character’s death in the first run was a key plot point. Glen said: “The precedent was last year when, after I died, I unexpectedly reappeared on camera.“I suppose you didn’t realise at first that my voice was coming from beyond the grave, but the whole idea really came to fruition in the last episode.” “My daughter had just attempted suicide and came into ‘God’s waiting room’ where she had this imagined conversation with me. They took that and have continued it into the new season. It feels like a quite unique conceit, and it’s part of the elusive nature of what Delicious is.” “I think Delicious crosses different genres and it’s hard to pinpoint.” “It’s definitely sharp, comedic, but it’s very much about human relationships and stuff that everyone’s very familiar with – children, family, how you bring them up, how you get it wrong, relationships – and of course all around food and sex and the big issues in life.” Of his return, Iain said he was delighted to reconnect with his fellow cast members: “I’ve just enjoyed coming back to a really lovely bunch of people. I’m very fond of Dawn and Emilia. Dawn I’d never worked with before and Emilia I had, and we were very good friends on a film that we did in Italy. I feel it on [Game of] Thrones very acutely, but I definitely feel it on this. It’s a lovely sensation as an actor to return to something that has gone down well, and to meet up with people and just have that shared experience.” On Christmas and Family, particularly his father With the festive season nearly upon us, and with some well deserved family time on the cards, Glen said he’s a big fan of Christmas, with special Scots memories to call on. He said: “I’m from Scotland and my vivid memories are of my father, who always used to wear a kilt on all dress occasions. It seemed like the biggest thing in the world using one of his kilt socks to fill with presents on Christmas eve and now it’s been dwarfed by the size of the stockings that my own children get. But I remember at the time, it seemed enormous and so exciting.” “I also have a lot of religion in my family, some members were ministers at the Church of Scotland so, although I am a non-believer myself, we always take in the candlelit service at Christmas which is gorgeous and lovely.”

Personal Genomics: The Latest “DIY” Trend
By Amanda Piccininni, Florida State University Class of 2020
March 2, 2019
With the rise of companies such as AncestryDNA and 23andMe the idea of taking your health and family history into one’s own hands is enticing for many; tracing not only one’s family lineage but also identifying potential genetic health risks passed down generationally can be helpful in developing a more proactive and healthy lifestyle. While in theory this sounds like a positive tool that one can use to better their own life and chances at staying in peak health, there are quite a few serious and concerning factors that come along with these personal tests. Concerns regarding the validity of results, the fear of genetic discrimination, and the new, controversial technique “familial searching” law enforcement are several of the most prominent issues today. This technology being relatively new means that we have yet to see many of these issues come to fruition or play out in court, yet these are still valid concerns that users of these at home genomic tests have raised, and other implications that potential users should be made aware of.
Law enforcement is becoming one of the main reasons that we hear about the usefulness of these personal genomic tests, recently they have aided law enforcement to prosecute people for previously thought “cold cases”. The most notable case of this being the “Grim Sleeper” case in which police used “familial searching” to find a close relative and DNA match. The Grim Sleeper had never been arrested and therefore his DNA had never been entered into a database meaning it was impossible for police to find his identity. However, this all changed when his son got arrested and they swabbed his DNA they found that it matched what evidence they had for the Grim Sleeper almost perfectly. [4] While this seems like it was an undeniable success, this familial DNA searching remains controversial and is proving a great obstacle even in the courtroom. Familial searching differs from a traditional DNA database search in that it looks for potential matches, with the help of partial DNA matches, not exact ones [1]. The defense uses this to help their case by claiming that this is not reliable enough evidence, and this may in fact prove a winning strategy. Michael Ursy exemplifies the errors that can accompany this familial searching technique, when his father’s DNA was tested and found to be a partial match to the DNA sample they had recovered from an unsolved murder his male relatives became the main suspects in the case. When Ursy voluntarily gave his DNA to a nonprofit research institution, which was later acquired by Ancestry DNA [5] the police ordered Ancestry to hand over Ursy’s information and then required Ursy to submit a DNA sample to them with the force of a search warrant [5]. Ursy felt like a criminal for weeks while the sample was being tested, in the end the DNA conclusively came back as a no matcha and it proved it would have been impossible for Ursy to have committed the crime. This shows that while familial searching may seem to be a winning technique in theory, there have also been numerous cases in which it was simply wrong. These two cases show opposing outcomes, both the successes and failures of this new familial searching technique. This has become an increasingly controversial practice, calling into question the accuracy of partial DNA matches, and whether or not they are reliable enough to use in cases as serious as murder investigations. As more and more cases play out, the legitimacy of this technique will be determined in future court cases.
Another huge concern specific to the legal realm is that of genetic discrimination, naturally when a company codes and stores your genetic, personal data there are a variety of worries that arise. One of the most frightening is the idea that if that information somehow becomes public employers and insurance agencies will be able to use someone’s proclivity for a certain disorder and use it against them in terms of the cost of insurance, and whether or not they will be hired. The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008 (or GINA) was instituted to combat these exact things, specifically to ease the worries of people thinking about getting genetic testing but holding back for fear of such discrimination from employers and insurers. However, not everything is covered within GINA it “does not limit the use of genetic information in determinations of life, disability, or long-term care insurance” [1]. There is also a provision under the Affordable Care Act, called the “Preserving Employee Wellness Act” in which employers are able to make their employees choose between taking a DNA test or paying a higher insurance rate [1]. This is concerning for obvious reasons, it would greatly diminish the restrictions on genetic testing and would have the ability to increase health insurance up to 50% for those employees who are against sharing their personal information with their employers, or for those whose results show certain mutations or increased risk of certain diseases. What makes this even more dangerous is the fact that many of these at home tests can be completely inaccurate, results are based on estimates [3] and certified doctors are not consulted in these processes [2]. There is also a danger that accompanies informing an individual that they have an incredibly high chance for a life-threatening disease without providing them with a doctor’s opinion on how best to prevent the disease, or how to be proactive can result in an individual taking matters into their own hands without proper information which may result in even more dangerous outcomes.
In summation there are advantages to personal genetic tests; they are more affordable and accessible to more people today than ever before, and have also aided law enforcement in solving previously thought “cold cases”. However, along with these advantages there are numerous worries, accuracy and privacy being the most prominent. There is always the threat of someone hacking a company’s database and releasing genetic information to everyone which also calls into question the idea of genetic discrimination. While GINA has been implemented, there are still loopholes within the legislation that allow for genetic data to be accessed. The validity of these tests have also been called into question recently, how seriously should one take their results? The decision of whether or not to take an at home genomic test is a personal one yet all of the pros and cons should be considered beforehand, while it may seem as simple as spitting into a tube there are a myriad of consequences that may arise even in the future.

2019 in Review
It’s not how you start its how you finish… and I entered 2019 emotionally depleted.
I had a choice though. I could either wallow in my feelings or SLAY THESE GOALS Then boom, Queen Koffee releases one of the biggest reggae songs in history featuring lyrics that permeated my soul. At the start of each year I select one word to help guide my intentions for the next 364 days. For 2019 my theme word was FORCE. It’s like Koffee knew my heart! She starts the song by singing: "Toast, yeah (mmh yeah), say we a come in wid a force, yeah, blessings we a reap pon we course inna hand full”…I still have toast on heavy rotation.
2019 was a great year for soca and dancehall too. Ding Dong released a slew of new dances. Elephant Man came back to the music scene. Oshane from the overload skankaz crew created the “celebration” dance that can be seen worldwide. I even taught the hosts of Breakfast Television how to do it on live TV. See here: https://youtu.be/SipdgozEda0?t=176
Meanwhile a Grenadian (Mr.Killa) won the Trinidad soca monarch, Bunji, Machel, & Skinny united the Caribbean with “Famalay”, and Kes the band had yawdies chippin’ for a second year in a row with “Savannah Grass”. Speaking of which, 2019 gave me the space to do more creative work. Check out this beautiful music video I choreographed and directed https://youtu.be/ohj_Vg8mw0I . Shout out to Kes for sharing it to his instastories.
Guys! THE RAPTORS ARE THE 2019 NBA FLIPPING CHAMPIONS. This win was one of the best feelings ever. The fight, tenacity, and passion from the team was unmatched. AND THE FANS! Wow. The way everyone came together - filling the streets in their Raptors gear. The Celebration Parade! Gees. We are truly one of a kind. Big up @general_genius416 for having the whole city doing the #RaptorFoot. I’m so proud Toronto got to show the world how dope we were even with all the hate coming in from the outside. Rapchas to di world!!!! RIP Louie Rankin.
…and RIP Nipsey Hussle your legacy will live on. As an artist myself, I’m so inspired by the tremendous work you’ve done in so little time and how you’ve transformed your artistry into a vehicle for change.
Life really is really precious. In 2019, I also watched two people dear to me fight for their lives. They both fought hard and are healing now but what a journey that has been. Giving God thanks for keeping them and reminding us to live purposeful, lead with love, and take care of our body, mind, and spirit as best as we can.
Some of my personal favourite moments in 2019:
The Pink Party
On Feb. 3rd at a small gathering with friends and family I hosted to the Pink Party. It was to celebrate the launch of simplyshakera.com. Thank you to our host @trayarts. This is was such an emotional day for me. I was proud, relieved, excited, and anxious, all at the same time.
Booking 3 National TV Commercials:
Guys this was huge accomplishment for me because I stopped doing the audition life years ago. God had a different plan though. Grateful to be featured in commercials for Autotrader, Uber Eats/Toronto Raptors, and Spectrum Business
Feature on Real Housewives of Atlanta
YA’LL!!! What a way to close off a decade and highlight 10+ years of work !! The #RHOA were in Toronto for carnival this summer and Bravo TV reached out to me to share some tips with the ladies. Over 1.985 million people tuned in on December 29th, 2019 as I spiced up their TVs. I am big fan of the show, and a proud torontonian and carnivalian. It still hasn’t sunk in. Before the season is up I’ll do a recap on how it all went down.
Carnival Spice
Seven years I had an idea to start a company that brought all my passions (dance, fitness, culture, community) to one area. Carnival Spice was born and has grown into such a beautiful platform that showcases Caribbean carnival arts and aspiring performers. My 2019 team though was so lit. It’s been a pleasure supporting their growth as artists and watching them navigate life while pursuing their passion in dance. We had a blast in 2019. From concept videos, to booking national interviews, and securing corporate clients like PWC, Soho House, and the Aga Khan Museum… we even took home the ByBlacks People’s Choice Award for Best Dance group.
My Natural Journey
In 2017 I noticed a decline in my health, in 2018 I learned why so in 2019 I had to do something about about. A shift in my lifestyle was needed. I made small changes, substituted products, implemented supplements and cut out inflamers! Specifically dairy, caffeine, alcohol, and the biggest one - relaxer which resulted in on the most dramatic hairstyles I’ve ever done in my life. I cut my hair! I will admit, the cut wasn’t planned. I knew I’d eventually have to do it but didn’t expect it to be so soon. I honestly ran out of hairstyles by the end of the year. The look I have had since I was about 12 was long straight hair. With the amount of styles I had in 2019, I could have easily done the DMX challenge but by Dec. 29th my scalp and edges were TIRED! lol. I will say though, the cut was quite liberating. I look forward to these curls growing and glowing.
Fam, I am looking for a longerwear nail color alternative to shellac nail polish; cause chileee, I cringe every time I put my hand under that UV light - suggestions?
I left 2019 feeling empowered, grateful and excited for what’s next. Thank you for all your support.
2020 is here! A year I expect to be full of love and fruition. I encourage you to dream big, set intentions and do the work. Let’s make it the best year yet!
YOU READY?!

Bellator Japan: Goiti Yamauchi feels interim lightweight title might be needed
Ahead of Bellator Japan (aka Bellator 237), Goiti Yamauchi feels he’s in the position he deserves to be at and looks to continue growing. But he feels Patricio “Pitbull” Freire’s participation in the Bellator Featherweight Grand Prix may require an interim lightweight title.
Goiti Yamauchi will be one of four Bellator representatives taking part in inter-promotional contests with fighters from Japanese promotion RIZIN when Bellator heads to the “Land of the Rising Sun” for Bellator Japan (aka Bellator 237) next weekend.
Yamauchi will take on Daron Cruickshank in a lightweight bout at the event in the legendary Saitama Super Arena.
A member of the Bellator roster since 2013, Yamauchi feels honored to be representing Bellator and wants to get the win for his home organization.
“I have so much gratitude for Bellator,” Yamauchi told FanSided MMA. “I feel that I’m really part of [the] Bellator team now, because you know, this isn’t the beginning. We’ve been growing together, me and Bellator…the fighter, the person that I am now I, you know, is because of Bellator. So, for me, I’m very proud to represent Bellator in Japan, and I think we are stronger than the other companies. So, I hope we get this win for the whole Bellator team.”
This will be a bit of a homecoming for Yamauchi, as he will be competing in Japan for the first time. He was born in Japan to a Japanese father and Japanese-Brazilian mother, but his family moved to Brazil, where he currently fights out of, at a very young age.
Neither that nor the Bellator vs. RIZIN nature of his contest is adding any extra pressure than normal on him, however.
“There’s no pressure because of Japan, because of RIZIN, I’m just going out there — just like doing sparring here in Brazil or America,” he said. “It’s the same thing, the same focus, I’m going to do my work in that scene.”
Yamauchi owns a 10-3 record in Bellator but has won five of the six fights he’s had since a move to lightweight, scoring victories over former featherweight title challenger Daniel Weichel, former two-time tournament finalist Saad Awad and Adam Piccolotti. In fact, his most recent outing — the win over Awad in October at Bellator 229 — earned him the record for most submissions in the promotion’s history. His sole loss in this span saw him go the distance with Michael Chandler on short notice.
Yamauchi feels while he isn’t as much a Bellator name like Chandler, he’s in the “perfect” position and is only continuing to grow himself.
“I am in a position that I deserve to be,” Yamauchi said. “If you want it, you go and earn it. Everything is fair in this business. If I want to be recognized like Michael Chandler, I have to have the same accomplishments that Michael Chandler’s got. I’m working on it. I’m working to be more famous, I’m working to be more wealthy, I’m working to be a better fighter.
“I think I am in the position that I deserve to be. I’m not satisfied, but I’ll be working to reach the top. If I want to be the best, I have to work on it. I don’t have to ask for it, I have to earn.”
A win over Cruickshank may very well put Yamauchi in the title picture conversation if he’s not there already. But, as he notes, there’s a small problem: the current Bellator lightweight champion, Patricio “Pitbull” Freire, also the featherweight champ, is currently in the middle of competing in the Bellator Featherweight Grand Prix, making him inactive for now at 155.
It’s very rare for Bellator to play the interim championship card; there have only been three times where the promotion declared an interim champ in a weight class — all coming between November 2013 and May 2014.
In fact, an interim championship was never put forth at all during Vitaly Minakov’s absence from the promotion during his heavyweight title run before leaving Bellator and being stripped in May 2016. Nor was one made when light heavyweight champ Ryan Bader took part in, and won, the Heavyweight Grand Prix and heavyweight title (and Bader hasn’t defended the 205-pound title since, though he plans to in the near future).
Yamauchi isn’t certain if Bellator feels this way, perhaps in a desire to not be like the UFC, he says, but he feels this is might be a good time for the promotion to bring in an interim strap.
“Maybe Bellator needs to make an interim belt. I don’t know how it works for Bellator, but he cannot stunt the division for a long time. But we’ll see, he’s the champion.
“He’s the favorite for this tournament, so maybe he goes to the finals. And this is not good for the [lightweight] division, but we’ll see.”
The pursuit of more than one title, and subsequent holding up of divisions, however, is not exclusive at all to Bellator. The status of champ-champ has been a thing in the sport since Conor McGregor famously pursued such a mark during 2016. He accomplished said mission, and had a famous feud with Nate Diaz in that time, but faced major criticism for holding up the featherweight division he was also champion of. The same happened at lightweight as McGregor pursued a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather and disappeared from the Octagon until October 2018.
In fact, hours before this piece’s publication, it was announced Henry Cejudo, who was a champ-champ, is no longer UFC flyweight champion. He faced criticism for holding up the UFC flyweight and bantamweight divisions as he finishes a recovery from shoulder surgery. This was especially prevalent at flyweight — a division Cejudo saved this year — as he calls out Jose Aldo for a bantamweight title bout.
But despite all that, Yamauchi adds he doesn’t feel champ-champs hurt MMA at all. He just feels it’s not as easy to be active and hold titles in more than one weight class at a time; whereas, it’s easier to do such in boxing.
“Since [McGregor], everybody wants to do this kind of challenge. A lot of people have been succeeding in trying to get the second belt.”
“I think it’s a good idea. MMA is not like boxing. In boxing, you can be a multiple-time champion [and/or a champion in] a lot of weight divisions because the system is off the waves. It’s pretty different than in MMA. In MMA, there’s not [as many] weight classes like boxing. So, this is the problem, I think, because you cannot be active in both divisions. So, I think the MMA community needs to do something about it. Create more weight classes or something like that.”
As far as Yamauchi’s upcoming fight goes, Cruickshank is a veteran of over a decade and 35 fights. He had been scheduled to compete in Bellator back in 2011 but that never came to fruition.
Instead, Cruickshank competed on season 15 of The Ultimate Fighter before being signed by the UFC. He competed in the Octagon 13 times between 2012 and 2016, going 6-6 (1 NC) with losses to John Makdessi, Jorge Masvidal, Beneil Dariush and Paul Felder. He was winless in four straight when he was cut and subsequently signed with RIZIN.
Cruickshank is 5-4 in the promotion but comes into his fight with Yamauchi off two straight losses.
“He can be faster than me, he can be stronger than me, but, 100 percent, what he doesn’t have, that I have, is my mentality,” Yamauchi said. “This is a God [given] gift. This is something that [isn’t easy]. The hardest thing that you can have is a good mentality, good heart. To be a good fighter, you need three things: a good chin, a good heart, and, most importantly, a good mentality.”
Bellator Japan, an event, Bellator 237, done in co-promotion with RIZIN, takes place on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2019 (airing Saturday, Dec. 28 in the U.S.) at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. Follow along with FanSided MMA for live results and highlights.

[/ultimate_ctation][vc_column_text]What makes most experiences great? I tend to find it’s usually the people behind them. This is particularly true for one specific Walla Walla Bed and Breakfast – Fat Duck Inn. When I sat down to write about my experience at Fat Duck Inn in Walla Walla wine country this quote kept coming to mind, but I couldn’t figure out why.
When life gives you lemons make apple juice and leave life wondering how you did it.
[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]To be honest, it really slowed me down in my writing process because I just couldn’t wrap it around how it fit with Walla Walla Bed and Breakfasts. But it kept sticking out like a flashing, neon sign. So, I took my dog for a walk…because that’s what I do when I procrastinate try to get my thoughts together.
Why this quote? Well for context, I fell in love with it years ago and now have it framed in my kids’ room’s as a reminder that when bad sh*! happens, you can turn it around and use it to your advantage. (I also have it on a sticky note at my desk to remind me…hence the flashing neon sign.) It dawned on me when I was walking my dog that the quote had everything to do with how the owners of Fat Duck Inn – Kim and Tim Gratzer – got to Walla Walla and what is now one of my favorite B&B’s – Fat Duck Inn.
Kim and Tim Gratzer owners of Fat Duck Inn
In their mid-fifties the couple decided to take the plunge into early retirement, which included buying and running a Walla Walla Bed and Breakfast. They had the unfortunate – turned fortunate – reminder that life is short and you should spend the time you’re given doing what you want, with those you want to be with.
Starting with the lemons… Kim had a long, hard battle with Leukemia, one that she won! That was a game changer for the couple who spent their careers in Seattle raising their now grown children. It was time to reset their priorities when Kim got the clean bill of health…and time to start making apple juice.
Some couples need to take a break from one another, but I can’t get enough time with my wife…
Having nearly lost her to Leukemia, Tim told me he’s so grateful to not have a break and to work side by side with Kim everyday. You can see that love (and teamwork) each morning at breakfast. It’s inspiring and super cute.
Last minute surprise items like mushroom, spinach quiche might find its way to the morning menu.
Having been a corporate executive for half his life, Tim left his desk job at Boeing Global Services to cook…and, paint, clean, mow, garden, make spread sheets for the business side of Fat Duck Inn and everything else that comes with owning a B&B. Kim left her career as a hair salon owner to join him in everything – minus the spreadsheets. Their dream to own and run a B&B came to fruition in Dec. 2018 when they purchased Fat Duck Inn in one of their favorite places to escape weekends in Seattle – Walla Walla wine country.
Fat Duck Inn isn’t a new Wall Walla Bed and Breakfast but rather one that been brought back to life after hanging up its no vacancy sign several years ago. In December 2018, the Gratzer’s purchased the historic home and spent the winter restoring it to its past grandeur. In April 2019, the no vacancy sign graced the Fat Duck Inn once more.
The Rooms at Fat Duck Inn
There are five rooms at this little Wall Walla Bed and Breakfast, each offering a different price point and sleeping options – king or queen beds, with some rooms including pull-out couches as well. During our visit we stayed in the Merganser Suite, which is located on the top floor, featuring a king size bed, en-suite private bath and shower, large sitting area complete with an electric fireplace, smart TV and pull-out sofa sleeper. Take a look at the room options to which one fits your taste and needs.

Food at Fat Duck Inn
Saving the best for last… The breakfast at this Wall Walla Bed and Breakfast = AMAZING.
Tim is a self-taught chef, one that had to meet very high expectations early on – his kids. Most evenings when their kids were young, Kim was managing the hair salon which left Tim in charge of dinner. While Mac & Cheese and hot dogs could have sufficed, he chose to kick things up and learned to cook, like really cook. After years of cooking for his family he branched out into catering private events and multi-course, wine paired dinners – just because he thought it would be fun. It’s fun to see his excitement each morning when he shares his breakfast creations with you…each meal made a lasting impression on my taste buds.

Taking breakfast sandwiches to the next level.
Avocado toast isn’t trendy, it’s delicious!
Tim doesn’t just make breakfast each morning, he caters it to your palate so you begin your day with a mouthwatering experience. You pick from a selection of items and he makes your meal to order that morning. His desire is to provide high-quality, distinctive breakfast menu items from locally sourced products reaffirms that breakfast is certainly the most important meal of the day, especially when you’re staying at Fat Duck Inn. You really need to try to stay for at least two nights, if only for the breakfast!!! (TIP: If the weather is nice, you must eat breakfast on the outdoor patio! How cute is this!!!)
The Bottomline for this Walla Walla Bed and Breakfast
When it comes to Walla Walla Bed and Breakfasts there are a handful to choose from and they range in price, location and amenities. Fat Duck Inn is the perfect option if you’re looking to stay in the historic downtown area. The remodeled 1928 Craftsman home is nestled in one of Walla Walla’s finest historic, tree-lined neighborhoods just moments to the downtown tasting rooms, restaurants and shopping.
The Gratzer’s offer an amazing, personal experience for guests. Including one of the best breakfasts I’ve had in a looooong time. The Inn itself is extremely well-kept, comfortable, impeccably remodeled and walking distance to all the downtown attractions. You should definitely look at staying here.
Every room at Fat Duck Inn has been impeccably remodeled.
Added Bonus for Wine Lovers
The couple has visited every winery in Walla Walla, some more than once. In other words, if you need some suggestions on where to sip – they knows their Walla Walla wine and the tasting room experiences to expect.
Just FYI
When visiting the Walla Walla wine region keep in mind that about a third of the wines in the Valley are produced on the Washington side of the AVA. With that said, the main area to stay and explore a larger portion of the Valley is the town of Walla Walla, at least for now. See Carpe Travel’s Walla Walla Wine Travel Guide for more ideas on things to do, suggested itineraries and background on the wine region.

The day after the election, Slate’s political writers tackled the question of why the Democratic Party—which has now lost five of the past seven presidential elections and solidified its minority status in Congress—keeps losing elections. Chris Suellentrop says that John Kerry was too nuanced and technocratic, while George W. Bush offered a vision of expanding freedom around the world. William Saletanargues that Democratic candidates won’t win until they again cast their policies the way Bill Clinton did, in terms of values and moral responsibility. Timothy Noahcontends that none of the familiar advice to the party—move right, move left, or sit tight—seems likely to help. Slate asked a number of wise liberals to take up the question of why Americans won’t vote for the Democrats. Click here to read previous entries.
I say forget introspection. It’s time to be honest about our antagonists. My predecessors in this conversation are thoughtful men, and I honor their ideas, but let’s try something else. I grew up in Missouri and most of my family voted for Bush, * so I am going to be the one to say it: The election results reflect the decision of the right wing to cultivate and exploit ignorance in the citizenry. I suppose the good news is that 55 million Americans have evaded the ignorance-inducing machine. But 58 million have not. (Well, almost 58 million—my relatives are not ignorant, they are just greedy and full of classic Republican feelings of superiority.)
Ignorance and bloodlust have a long tradition in the United States, especially in the red states. There used to be a kind of hand-to-hand fight on the frontier called a “knock-down-drag-out,” where any kind of gouging, biting, or maiming was considered fair. The ancestors of today’s red-state voters used to stand around cheering and betting on these fights. When the forces of red and blue encountered one another head-on for the first time in Kansas Territory in 1856, the red forces from Missouri, who had been coveting Indian land across the Missouri River since 1820, entered Kansas and stole the territorial election. The red news media of the day made a practice of inflammatory lying—declaring that the blue folks had shot and killed red folks whom everyone knew were walking around. The worst civilian massacre in American history took place in Lawrence, Kan., in 1863—Quantrill’s raid. The red forces, known then as the slave-power, pulled between 150 and 200 unarmed men from their beds on a Sunday morning and slaughtered them, many in front of their wives and children. * The error that progressives have consistently committed over the years is to underestimate the vitality of ignorance in America. Listen to what the red state citizens say about themselves, the songs they write, and the sermons they flock to. They know who they are—they are full of original sin and they have a taste for violence. The blue state citizens make the Rousseauvian mistake of thinking humans are essentially good, and so they never realize when they are about to be slugged from behind. Here is how ignorance works: First, they put the fear of God into you—if you don’t believe in the literal word of the Bible, you will burn in hell. Of course, the literal word of the Bible is tremendously contradictory, and so you must abdicate all critical thinking, and accept a simple but logical system of belief that is dangerous to question. A corollary to this point is that they make sure you understand that Satan resides in the toils and snares of complex thought and so it is best not try it. Next, they tell you that you are the best of a bad lot (humans, that is) and that as bad as you are, if you stick with them, you are among the chosen. This is flattering and reassuring, and also encourages you to imagine the terrible fates of those you envy and resent. American politicians ALWAYS operate by a similar sort of flattery, and so Americans are never induced to question themselves. That’s what happened to Jimmy Carter—he asked Americans to take responsibility for their profligate ways, and promptly lost to Ronald Reagan, who told them once again that they could do anything they wanted. The history of the last four years shows that red state types, above all, do not want to be told what to do—they prefer to be ignorant. As a result, they are virtually unteachable. Third, and most important, when life grows difficult or fearsome, they (politicians, preachers, pundits) encourage you to cling to your ignorance with even more fervor. But by this time you don’t need much encouragement—you’ve put all your eggs into the ignorance basket, and really, some kind of miraculous fruition (preferably accompanied by the torment of your enemies, and the ignorant always have plenty of enemies) is your only hope. If you are sufficiently ignorant, you won’t even know how dangerous your policies are until they have destroyed you, and then you can always blame others. The reason the Democrats have lost five of the last seven presidential elections is simple: A generation ago, the big capitalists, who have no morals, as we know, decided to make use of the religious right in their class war against the middle class and against the regulations that were protecting those whom they considered to be their rightful prey—workers and consumers. The architects of this strategy knew perfectly well that they were exploiting, among other unsavory qualities, a long American habit of virulent racism, but they did it anyway, and we see the outcome now—Cheney is the capitalist arm and Bush is the religious arm. They know no boundaries or rules. They are predatory and resentful, amoral, avaricious, and arrogant. Lots of Americans like and admire them because lots of Americans, even those who don’t share those same qualities, don’t know which end is up. Can the Democrats appeal to such voters? Do they want to? The Republicans have sold their souls for power. Must everyone? Progressives have only one course of action now: React quickly to every outrage—red state types love to cheat and intimidate, so we have to assume the worst and call them on it every time. We have to give them more to think about than they can handle—to always appeal to reason and common sense, and the law, even when they can’t understand it and don’t respond. They cannot be allowed to keep any secrets. Tens of millions of people didn’t vote—they are watching, too, and have to be shown that we are ready and willing to fight, and that the battle is worth fighting. And in addition, we have to remember that threats to democracy from the right always collapse. Whatever their short-term appeal, they are borne of hubris and hatred, and will destroy their purveyors in the end.
Correction, Nov. 8, 2004: When I wrote the line about all my Missouri relatives voting for Bush, I was, of course, making an assumption (in which, of course, there is an a–). This morning (Friday), one of the relatives I was thinking of, my cousin, Jody, happened to be dropping something off at a construction site, and when he went into the office, he heard my name being taken in vain by R___ L________. Mr. L_______ quoted me as saying that all my Missouri relatives had voted for Bush, and my cousin went straight home and called me to say, “Not me, not my mom, not my brother, and not my wife.” My cousin, who is 58, was in the Navy for 25 years, from the Vietnam War to the Gulf War. When he came out, I recognized that even though I loved him, he was sexist, racist, and homophobic. We had a few arguments and then lost touch. As a result of marriage, a college education, and considerable introspection, he’s converted. He said when I spoke to him, “I wasn’t going to vote a straight Democratic ticket, but when I read it over afterward, I saw that I had.” And so I stand corrected. The family vote (as far as I can discern) has shifted from 9 D vs. 24 R to 14 D vs. 19 R.
Also, my brother called my sister and asked her, “So which am I, greedy, pompous, or ignorant?” We told him we would get back to him on that. (Return to the original sentence.)
Correction, Dec. 2, 2004: An earlier version of this piece misstated specific details about Quantrill’s raid, including the date and the number killed. It took place in 1863, not 1862, and between 150 and 200 people were killed, not 265. (Return to corrected sentence.)

Cryptocurrency supporters have been discussing an early version of the original Bitcoin source code that surfaced this week. An old forum post and mailing list letter written by Satoshi suggests there was a private version of the code distributed to a few people before the launch of the network on Jan. 3, 2009.

The Pre-Release of Bitcoin and a Discarded Genesis Block With Completely Different Hash
Bitcoiners have been conversing about Satoshi Nakamoto’s original Bitcoin source code over the last few hours and whether the pseudonymous creator distributed a private version to others before the official launch. The discussion started on March 13 when well-known BTC proponent Francis Pouliot shared a very old version of Satoshi’s source code and a letter from the creator detailing that he sent the “main files” to James A. Donald. “I sent you the main files (available by request at the moment, full release soon),” Nakamoto stated on Nov. 17, 2008.
A mailing list response to James A. Donald on Nov. 17, 2008 explains that Satoshi gave files to a few people before the launch on Jan. 3, 2009.
In the source code that was distributed to Bitcointalk.org member “Cryddit” there are some interesting finds in what is believed to be the earliest version of the Bitcoin code. For instance, the code mentions the term “bitcoin miner” which seems to be the first time Nakamoto describes these participants as miners. Interestingly, the term “miners” was not used in the original whitepaper – throughout the text they are referred to as “nodes.” Additionally, the term blockchain was really called the “timechain” according to Satoshi’s code given to Cryddit.
A screenshot from Jan. 3, 2009 (same date as genesis block), with an unreleased blockchain at block 213 and three other connections according to Bitcointalk.org user Deepceleron on Dec. 23, 2013.
“The timechain is a tree-shaped structure starting with the genesis block at the root. With each block potentially having multiple candidates to be the next block. pprev and pnext link a path through the main/longest chain. A block index may have multiple pprev pointing back to it but pnext will only point forward to the longest branch or will be null if the block is not part of the longest chain,” the source code text explains.
The text continues:
Nodes collect new transactions into a block, hash them into a hash tree, and scan through nonce values to make the block’s hash satisfy proof-of-work requirements. When they solve the proof-of-work, they broadcast the block to everyone and the block is added to the timechain. The first transaction in the block is a special one that creates a new coin owned by the creator of the block.
Another intriguing find within the early code is the fact that Satoshi named Bitcoin’s smaller units a “coin” (1,000,000) and “cent” (10,000) rather than “satoshis,” the term most people use today. There’s also a line of text that talks about “atoms” and “user reviews” which refers to some sort of rating system.
According to Mike Hearn, this section of the code was meant for a P2P marketplace similar to Openbazaar but built into the Bitcoin protocol. The marketplace idea was discarded after the network launched.
According to early Bitcoin developer Mike Hearn, Satoshi had intended to integrate a peer-to-peer (P2P) marketplace inside the protocol but the creator never finished the code and the idea was shelved. The source also has a discarded genesis block in the code which has a completely different hash. Assuming the hash was the first genesis test block, it was produced on Sept. 10, 2008.
The smallest units in Bitcoin were not called satoshis but were dubbed “coin” and “cent” by the creator.
IRC Client, P2P Marketplace and a Virtual Poker Game
Besides the pre-code release before the launch on Jan. 3, 2009, the original 0.1.0 Bitcoin code also has some fascinating details. For example, the original Bitcoin software had an IRC client included, which aimed to create an easier way to bootstrap messaging. Further, the original repository that held Bitcoin’s 0.1.0 code also included the framework in order to create a virtual poker game which was added on April 16, 2008. After the official network launch, ideas like the P2P market and the virtual poker game never came to fruition. The IRC client stuck around for a few releases, but after Bitcoin version 0.8.2, support for IRC bootstrapping was removed completely.
Bitcoin also had a built-in virtual poker game that was never developed.
No one knows why Satoshi used certain definitions for Bitcoin terminology and why the creator decided to give up on the P2P market and poker application. The oldest available history of proof of an operating Bitcoin 0.1.0 version is a human-readable debug log. Satoshi worked on the Bitcoin code all the way up until version 0.3.19 as the chief maintainer, but subsequently left in 2010, handing the reins to Gavin Andresen. The pre-distributed code before the launch in 2009 is compelling, to say the least, for it provides an insight into the mind of Bitcoin’s enigmatic creator and his world-changing technology.
What do you think about the pre-release source code and some of the terms Satoshi used throughout the text? Let us know what you think about this subject in the comments section below.

‘Lady Bird Was The Soul-Sucking, Focus-Grouped Monstrosity I Needed To Appease Studios So They’d Let Me Pursue A Passion Project’: 5 Questions With Greta Gerwig
Dec. 22, 2017
source: http://www.clickhole.com/article/lady-bird-was-soul-sucking-focus-grouped-monstrosi-7185?utm_content=Main&utm_campaign=SF&utm_source=T
Making her directorial debut with the unanimously acclaimed coming-of-age film Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig has boldly announced herself as a force to be reckoned with in an industry in which female directors are rarely given a chance to shine. From her early days as the preeminent darling of the mumblecore movement to her present-day perch atop Oscar ballots, we sat down with the 34-year-old vanguard to discuss her career, ambitions, and extraordinary newfound success.
1. You’re known as a figurehead in the “mumblecore” film movement. How would you describe mumblecore to the uninitiated?
A mumblecore movie is basically a film shot in three hours that follows a white man living in Austin, TX as he struggles to buy a sofa from his ex-girlfriend.
2. Was it difficult to get the Lady Bird project off the ground?
No, not at all. In Hollywood, there’s a saying that you do “one for them, one for you.” And as a first-time director, I knew I needed to do something that would appease studios in order to get the leeway to pursue something I actually cared about. So Lady Bird was basically the soul-sucking, focus-grouped corporate monstrosity that I needed to get out of the way so that I could finally get the green light for my passion project, a period drama in which Harriet Tubman comes up with the idea for Danimals and must escape to the North on a jet ski so she can get the word out about her new yogurt invention. Keep an eye out for it, early 2019.
3. The main character in Lady Bird gives herself that nickname in the film. Did you have a nickname for yourself when you were young?
Yes. My nickname was Julius the Crime. It came from this time when I was being born and I immediately yelled, “I am Julius the Crime.” And it just kind of stuck.
4. Do you think having a background as an actor has made you a better director?
Oh, absolutely. Like, there are a ton of directors out there who will instantly call for an exterminator if they find a wasp nest on set and not even ask their actors if they want to look at it first. I know what a bummer that is, so when we found a big papery fuckin’ wasp nest on set one day, I made sure all the actors could come look at it and take pictures before I got rid of it—Saoirse even threw some rocks at it. My philosophy is that when you’re really in tune with your actors’ needs, it will lead to a better final product.
5. Lady Bird surpassed Toy Story 2 to set the Rotten Tomatoes record for best-reviewed film of all time. How did that feel?
I was 16 years old when I saw Toy Story 2 in theaters, and I remember the moment Buzz Lightyear came on screen for the first time. I turned to my mom and said, “One day, I’m gonna make that bug-eyed space honky my bitch.” And my mom took my hand and said, “Yes, I know.” So this was kind of a childhood dream of mine, and it’s been pretty cool to see it come to fruition.

What happens with Carmelo Anthony and the New York Knicks?
This story was originally published on September 5, and has been updated just ahead of the start of training camp for the New York Knicks.
With the NBA training camps set to open, the biggest lingering question around the league is this: What’s going on with Carmelo Anthony?
The short answer: he’s probably going to training camp as a member of the New York Knicks.
As of earlier this week, the New York Knicks were “not close” on any deal involving Anthony, per league sources. They’ve talked on and off with the Houston Rockets for much of the summer, but there has been no recent momentum toward a deal.
Zach Lowe highlights key faces in key places in his annual rundown of the NBA’s most fascinating players and teams.
There’s a new leader in the crowded race for the No. 1 pick, as well as more movement in the top seven.
What upcoming draft picks does every NBA team owe and own? Here’s our team-by-team breakdown.
2 Related
The Knicks have told people around the league recently that Houston simply doesn’t have anything that appeals to them.
Could a third team’s involvement change New York’s thinking? Of course.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported last month that Houston was looking for a third team to make a trade work. The Milwaukee Bucks emerged as a potential third team at one point, per league sources, but there was no traction toward a deal. Milwaukee has been trying to shed salary so, in all likelihood, the idea of taking back the remaining money on Ryan Anderson’s contract (three years, $60 million) in a trade wasn’t enticing.
One name that came up in those (very) preliminary talks? Bucks forward Jabari Parker, per league sources.
It’s unclear which side — the Knicks or Bucks — brought up Parker’s name. What is clear is that Parker would have been part of an outgoing package that included a larger Bucks contract, such as John Henson’s or Greg Monroe’s. If that deal had come to fruition, the Knicks would have received the type of return they’d long hoped for in an Anthony trade: a young player on a below-market contract in Parker.
Knicks president Steve Mills and general manager Scott Perry remain set on getting some combination of a young player, draft pick or expiring contract back in any Anthony deal. They have little interest in adding significant salary, which makes sense since New York already has a combined $50 million committed to Tim Hardaway Jr., Joakim Noah and Courtney Lee in 2019-20.
Of course, the package New York seeks in an Anthony trade is hard to find. So the smart money says that Anthony will be a Knick when training camp opens Monday. You can bet that he won’t be thrilled about that. The guess here is Anthony would rather run another possession in Phil Jackson’s triangle offense than answer questions on media day about his uncertain Knicks future. If he participates in the NBA’s traditional media day activities, Anthony would also have to take part in the production of promotional material — videos, pictures, in-house interviews, etc. — for the Knicks.
How’s that for awkward?
Members of the organization have subtly — and not so subtly — made it clear that Anthony isn’t part of the future. Last month, the club published season-ticket ads on social media and the team website featuring several different players. None of the ads included Anthony.
When New York Knicks head coach Jeff Hornacek starts training camp at the end of September, will Carmelo Anthony be there? Adam Hunger/USA TODAY Sports
More recently, Mills wrote a 1,100-word essay about his vision for the team on a company website. He didn’t reference Anthony once. And on Thursday, Perry wrote a blog that referenced the team’s young core of Kristaps Porzingis, Tim Hardaway Jr., Frank Ntilikina, Willy Hernangomez and Ron Baker. Again: no Anthony.
The underlying message to all of this seems clear: “Carmelo, we don’t want you here.” And the feeling is mutual.
There has been little contact between Anthony and members of the organization for much of the offseason, per sources. More recently, members of the organization, including Mills and head coach Jeff Hornacek, attended pickup games featuring Anthony at Lifetime Fitness gym in Manhattan, sources told ESPN.
It’s unclear if there was any formal discussion between Anthony and Hornacek or Mills at those games but Anthony’s preference, as of late last month, remained to be traded. Whether that happens before the start of training camp is up to Mills and Perry.
There is no hard deadline to spur action here but, in a perfect world, both the Knicks and Anthony would prefer to avoid the unnecessary drama that would come with having him in camp. This isn’t to say Anthony’s teammates want him gone. It’s just the opposite; the veteran is respected and well-liked in the locker room, but some teammates have admitted privately that it’s best for all parties involved if the club deals Anthony at this point.
The issue, of course, is finding an end result that satisfies both the Knicks and Anthony. The club has no interest, at this point, in negotiating a buyout with Anthony (he has two years and $44 million remaining on his contract).
So how does all of this end?
If the Knicks wait until mid-December, would the offers from Houston improve? Most free agents who signed contracts with new teams over the summer can be traded on Dec. 15. Maybe Houston could find a third team to facilitate a deal at that point.
Or maybe Carmelo expands his list of acceptable trade destinations to get a deal done? Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum of the Portland Trail Blazers openly recruited Carmelo earlier this summer, a recruitment that continued privately long after Lillard’s and McCollum’s interviews in July.
Unless he’s traded before Monday, we’ll find out just how Anthony feels about all of this when he takes questions from reporters on media day Monday morning. Last month, Anthony was in his hometown of Baltimore for a charitable event in conjunction with The Basketball Tournament. His hair and his beard were long; he said he’d been growing it out and enjoying time as an “AAU dad.” Through physical appearances and his words, Anthony gave off the impression that he was unburdened by all of the drama and uncertainty surrounding his future.
“I’m good, I’m good,” he said with a smile. “I’ve been away from the fray.
Anthony was in the middle of the fray for much of the past season in New York. If the Knicks don’t trade him in the next three days, he’ll be in the thick of it once again. Buckle up.

SOS Elms Coalition Speaks out
SOS Elms Coalition came to fruition with a passion to save Elm trees across the province of Saskatchewan during the rampage of Dutch Elm Disease DED in North America. Keeping abreast of the progression of the disease and forestry practices, SOS Elms was on top of the situation when the provincial Dutch Elm Disease program was cut from the budget in 2010. In lieu of the program, individual towns, municipalities and cities are taking responsibility upon themselves of educating the public in their area about DED and best conservation practices.
Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, West Swale Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada

Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, Saskatoon, SK, CA Winter
Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area Spring time
Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area, Saskatoon, SK, CA
Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area in the fog
Communities established a regional urban forestry community group or NGO, and in Saskatoon, it is the SOS Elms Coalition providing that support for the city of Saskatoon. These local foresters have had a keen eye out for Dutch Elm Disease, and work together with the City of Saskatoon Urban Forestry Program, and so were able to implement the Dutch Elm Disease DED response plan, so the single infected tree in Saskatoon with DED would not promote a city wide infestation.
“Urban forests in Canada have been dominated by three themes: superficial support by the provincial and federal governments, individuals’ commitment to developing urban forests of excellence, and awareness and action fueled by natural disaster….Cities like Saskatoon, Regina and Moose Jaw saw urban forests created largely with elm due to the limited number of species choice. In the 2000’s greater efforts were expended to diversify these forests. Regina’s Wascana Centre has had a lead role in maintaining tree cover in the prairie city as has SOS Elms in Saskatoon.”~Rosen
“The arrival of Dutch elm disease in the early 1960’s virtually wiped out the American elm (Ulmus americana L.) the street tree of choice in Canada’s cities. From this an urban forestry movement was born including the creation of a number of organizations – from community groups such as SOS Elms”~Rosen-Kenney
SOS Elms Coalition, reached out to the public for unique and spectacular trees of Saskatoon, and published a full colour booklet of these sites. These large tree centenarians grace Saskatoon’s Urban Forest. As an example of some of the trees presented are a Ginkgo Biloba, Limber Pine, Prairie Silk Honey Locust, Black Walnut and Northern Pin Oak grow against all odds in the City of Saskatoon, rare and unique species, indeed.
Heather Cline, a local artist visited the sites of Saskatoon Trees, which were presented by SOS Elms in their tree tour booklet. Her inspiration, resulted in a placement of artwork entitled the Urban Forest
SOS Elms Coalition sets up conference displays, initiates programs for schools, and assists in community projects bringing to the Saskatoon community an awareness of environmental issues and the precautions to mitigate the spread of Dutch Elm Disease.
Members of the SOS Elms Coalition were at the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area Clean UP in the summer of 2016. Robert White, of SOS Elms Coalition, was the official photographer at the clean up. As was the case in 1972, Manchurian Elm, and American Elm were afforested, along with hardy drought resistant tree species such as Colorado Blue Spruce, Balsam-poplar, Scotch Pine, Caragana. If Green Ash, Manitoba Maple or Willow were planted, there was not a large survival rate of these in the afforestation area. Native prairie Trembling Aspen Groves are mixed within the afforested woodlands. SOS Elms members recognizing the various locations of Elms in this urban regional park will truly ensure best conservaton practices.

The power of citizen action

“For 37 years, the 660 acre Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area (RSBBAA) in southwest Saskatoon (see map) was mostly neglected even though proclaimed by City Council in 1979 as an “urban regional park” and a “forest in perpetuity”. The park began in 1960 with a visionary idea of City planners” …

The present is full of opportunity. Never before in the history of the planet has mankind been given the privileges and opportunities that are at his disposal today. A great light has been raised and is penetrating the darkness of the world, but alas, too many with dust blinded eyes have yet to catch the vision. Some of us have. That is our privilege and our responsibility.~Richard St. Barbe Baker.

“When tree cover is destroyed it is a threat to both man and the creatures. The protection of world wildlife was in the vanguard of the conservation movement and it was very soon recognised that it was not possible to protect the wild animals and the threatened species without protecting their tree-cover habitat because they, like ourselves, need an adequate supply of oxygen, the very breath of life. The main source of oxygen is the evergreen tropical forests. ” ~ Richard St. Barbe Baker
