What I'm left with after episodes 1 & 2 of Love in the Big City is a visceral reminder of the yawning loneliness of isolation that comes from otherness, finding a kindred spirit, and then the betrayal and heartbreak at knowing you're no longer each other's most important person, and how society expects that to happen but somehow you (I) got blindsided by it anyway.

This show is beautiful, bitingly funny, and quietly devastating. And it is so, so gay. The way Young describes the relief of returning to the loud music and lights and packed dancefloor of the club is the same feeling that washed over me watching this show; even with these sad themes around the loneliness of our 20s , the familiarity is ironically a warm and comforting reminder that we're not alone.

Can we talk about how Kadar says to Altaïr in the beginning: "An excellent kill! Fortune favors your blade!", and then in the bureau with Malik, before Altaïr goes to meet "Robert", Malik says to him "Fortune favor your blade, brother."

And then THAT is what prompts Altaïr to actually finally apologize to him?

(It's these little things in the writing that make me go feral! Another one of my favorite parts is Altaïr and Malik calling each other "Dai" - Altaïr first calls Malik Dai before doing investigations during the Majd Addin mission, showing his character growth in how he's willing to humble himself in front of Malik by basically acknowledging him as a superior of sorts (he's even THANKING him here for his help - compare this to "I am your superior, in both title and ability! You should know better than to question me!"), and then when they last talk before Altaïr goes to confront Al Mualim, Malik calls HIM Dai, in turn acknowledging his growth 😭 I just... I love them so much, I don't even know what to do with myself anymore.)

Ok, but I actually think this was an incredibly subtle way of showing something really important about the way both Style and Sky feel about Fadel and Prapai on an instinctive level.

In both Style and Sky's stories, their dads are the only parent still present in their lives (Style because of his mother passing; Sky because of his mother leaving). Moreover, to both of them, their recovery from their respective traumas figure their dads in some very significant way. So their dads are incredibly important figures in their lives that they associate with safety, comfort, and protection.

And in both these cases neither Style nor Sky should be associating Fadel and Prapai with those feelings at all: Style, because he knows Fadel is a killer, one he is actively lying to and who has a reason to hurt him if he finds out. Sky, because of his misgivings about Prapai's motivations at this point in the narrative.

Yet in these moments of semi-wakefulness (Style is still mostly asleep; Sky is running a very high fever), they both hear a voice that should be unfamiliar and cause confusion and anxiety and instead call out to the one figure in their lives that they have always been able to rely on.

And yes, Style and Sky are in very different places in their respective narratives with Fadel and Prapai, but I just love how this little writing choice shows us that -- despite all their respective circumstances suggesting otherwise -- on some deep, subconscious, and intuitive level, our boys both heard a voice that sounded like the call of home.
