one of my FAVORITE things about the final season of lost in space is the new dynamic between all the kids while they're trapped on the planet at the beginning. like please, judy parenting 97 kids and the HEAVY implication that vijay is her second in command as he should be. will and robot doing all of the heavy lifting in terms of fixing anything and doing its REALLY well. he's grown up so much from that overwhelmed panicked kid in season 1. penny trying to live a little bit but instantly stepping up the moment they need her. will and penny taking care of each other constantly despite everything. all of the older kids taking care of the younger ones: calming them down, holding their hands, singing to them, etc. i mean the whole situation was a terrible place to be for all of them but the fact is is that it was also incredibly domestic and gave them so much room to grow and i loved it.

"Call tags?" The scribe droned, not even looking up from the terminal.
Danse only hesitated for a second. "D, N, dash, four zero seven P."
The scribe punched in the letters and numbers, and Danse saw the young man visibly jerk in surprise. Rheumy brown eyes stared up at the towering suit of X-01 armor and the scribe's voice squeaked when he hissed, " Danse? "
  The armored man nodded.
"Are you insane?! Danse--er, Paladin Danse, the elder has been on the warpath ever since you went...sir, he says you're a synth, a traitor to the Brotherhood. You're supposed to be dead! I knew there was something fishy about those reports!" The scribe whispered shakily. He looked incredibly nervous. "Most of us think he's off his rocker, but you try finding a soldier with the balls to tell him that point-blank!"
"It's comforting that you all have such faith in me." Danse said, meaning every word. "I'm afraid the announcement of my death was a bit...premature."
The scribe blinked. "Sir, after everything that...the amount of us that would stand by you through anything is the vast majority, I promise. Elder Maxson has locked up Paladin Brandis and-"
"Tell me he hasn't harmed Brandis." Danse cut him off, relieved when the scribe shook his head hastily.
"I think even the elder knows better than to assault one of the most beloved officers in our chapter." The scribe exhaled a long breath, then looked back up at Danse. "Sir, you should know that...well, it may be a bit disappointing to hear, but even if you are a synth, we're still with you, sir." The scribe gave him a salute.
Danse's eyes pricked with tears. He couldn't believe that he had the power to inspire such unwavering loyalty. "At ease, soldier. With any luck, this will be a diplomatic engagement. I'll take Knight Vega and be on my way."
"I...I am unsure if it will be so simple." The scribe admitted. "Ex-Knight Vega has also been confined to the brig since you went AWOL."
  " Ex -knight?"
"Maxson stripped of her rank, sir. Accused her of conspiring against the Brotherhood. On her end, she maintains her innocence." The scribe shrugged. "I don't understand why he doesn't just exile her or have her stand trial, but he's been dragging his feet the whole-"
" Bait ." Danse realized. "He's been waiting for me to come back for her, of course . She's our only way into the Institute. Either that or he just wants the satisfaction of killing me himself." He moved past the checkpoint without another word, leaving the scribe to sputter. Danse hoped he wasn't being too self-absorbed when he surmised that the report of his 'death' was no doubt being utilized as a thumbscrew on Elizabeth. Maxson obviously needed a confession; hell, he might even suspect Vega of being the one that tipped Danse off in the first place.
No one paid him much mind as he strode across the compound. Though he did intercept a few curious glances, Danse chalked them up to the distinctive armor he was wearing instead of outright suspicion.
"Where is the elder?" He gruffed at a crowd of aspirants, counting on the staticky speakers of his helmet to disguise his voice. One of them grimaced.
"In a mood." She joked, the group of aspirants nodding and laughing amongst themselves. "But if you mean location, he's been hanging around the build site a lot. Watching the progress on Big Lib, you know."
Danse inclined his head and turned on his heel, making a beeline for the previously-mentioned location while he guiltily recalled the time that he had threatened Vega with an upbraiding for her own quips about Maxson. As he thundered back across the courtyard, he could hear the muttering start up. People were beginning to notice him. His window of opportunity was shrinking; he needed to find Maxson fast . Danse picked up his pace, half-jogging.
Catching sight of Maxson at the very top of Prime's gantry made Danse feel minute, an insignificant David at the feet of a giant. He swallowed hard, shaking off the unsettling sensation and cueing up his helmet's speakers.
At the whine of feedback, Ingram glanced up from her console beneath the shelter across the dusty tarmac. "Hey!" She said sharply. "Whoever you are, you don't have clearance to-"
" Elder Maxson! " Danse roared, ignoring the red-headed proctor in favor of tilting his whole body back to project his voice upwards. " You know why I'm here! "
" Abomination! " Maxson shouted, sounding almost gleeful . He bolted for the lift, as if he expected Danse to flee. The paladin stood his ground though, patiently waiting for the elder to arrive at the lower level.
"Danse? You…" Ingram trailed off, scrambling across the square. "Is it really you in there, Danse?"
  "Yes, Proctor."
There was so much more he wanted to say, so much more to explain , but Maxson's arrival on the ground effectively cut off Danse's conversation. "I knew you would return, you traitor ." He asserted smugly as he marched over to Danse. "How kind of you to give me the privilege of ending you myself ."
Danse held up his hands peaceably. "I am unarmed, Maxson. I'm not here for a fight. I am simply here to request the amicable release of...of General Vega." He used the Minutemen title on a whim, watching Arthur's nostrils flare in irritation.
"Oh General Vega , is it? The Minutemen send a machine to do their dirty work? Or have you already infiltrated their ranks with more of your kind?" Maxson spat.
Danse shook his head. "This may come as a shock to you, Elder Maxson, but I had no idea I was a synth." He heard Ingram gasp behind him. Even Maxson looked momentarily startled at his admission and Danse seized the opening to reason, "through the entirety of my career I've done nothing to betray your trust, Arthur. And I never will. Please," Danse implored, "we need General Vega if we hope to eradicate the Institute."
"You expect me to believe that you wish to eradicate the Institute? You were born of it!" Arthur spat venomously. "You even standing here is an affront to nature, you scum . The Brotherhood does not negotiate with-"
"Elder Maxson, wait!" Ingram interrupted him sharply. "He's telling the truth. Vega is instrumental to gaining entry to the Institute. Our whole reason for being in the Commonwealth is to destroy the Institute. If we lose this chance-"
"I will not be spoken down to by my own troops, Proctor!" Maxson raged.
"Arthur, listen to me . You and Danse having a pissing match should be the least of our concerns." Ingram raised an eyebrow. "If he meant us harm, I feel like he would have come with a battalion or two. Danse might be a little dense , but he's never lacked battlefield intelligence."
"This thing isn't Danse, so stop referring to it as such!"
"Until proven otherwise, yes, he is . His DNA matched that Institute crap. It's him, Maxson. It's always been him. Sure, you might find it easier to think that the Institute grabbed the real Danse while he was out and about, but I don't think he would be reported as a missing asset if he was supposed to be here." Proctor Ingram theorized as she crossed her arms, her armor frame creaking.
"Just give me Elizabeth, Maxson." Danse pleaded. "This isn't a fight you want."
"Oh, on the contrary. This is the fight I want." Maxson seethed. "A chance to prove Brotherhood superiority once and for all! We will settle this as it is written in the Litany!"
"You sincerely wish to have a live-fire trial?" Danse asked incredulously, "a Litany trial, Arthur? As I recall, you stated before that you were above such practices."
"We live in unprecedented times, traitor." Maxson drew himself up to his full height. "My authority has been brought into question again and again. It seems only right that I battle my chief dissenter."
Danse was at a loss for words. Maxson's behavior was so irrational, he was almost tempted to consider whether the elder himself had been replaced by a synth. But no, voicing that fear would no doubt send Maxson into an even worse froth.
"When I defeat you, it will finally affirm the truth of the Brotherhood: that we were meant to stand tall atop the corpses of abominations, meant to triumph! " Maxson's eyes were wild as he turned to Ingram. "Proctor, you will bear witness to our Litany agreement. And now, abomination , issue your challenge." The elder demanded.
  "Arthur-"
" Issue it or be slagged where you stand! " Maxson screamed, spittle flying from his mouth.
Danse had never personally engaged in a Litany trial. His memory of the terminology was hazy at best, but he still made an attempt. "As a Brotherhood of Steel paladin," he began haltingly, saluting and then extending his hand to Maxson. "I am issuing a formal challenge against your authority as elder of this chapter. Through your actions and your deeds, you have proved yourself unfit to lead in my eyes. We will engage in combat under your terms, and should I emerge victorious, I ask that you relinquish General Vega to me."
"And when I emerge victorious, I will kill you." Maxson stated confidently.
"So be it." Danse knew he had very little agency in this matter. Maxson wanted to fight him, and Maxson always got his way. "Your terms, Elder?"
"No weapons or armor. We fight with nothing but the skills we possess. The first one pushed out of the circle loses." Maxson smirked. "You might be a synth, but a bullet in your head puts you down just as easily as any feral."
"You give me your word as Elder that you will turn Vega over to the custody of the Minutemen if I win?" Danse insisted, his heart slamming in his chest. Oh God, he would have to fight Maxson. Worse still, he would have to beat him. Arthur's prowess in combat was almost fabled , that story about the deathclaw part of this chapter's mythos.
"I will give you nothing, creature , and it will be far more than you deserve. But certainly, if you manage to beat me, I'll see to it that your co-conspirator is relinquished to your care." Maxson sneered. "Proctor, send out the announcement that we will have entertainment shortly."
"Sure thing, Elder." Ingram muttered, sidestepping away as Danse removed his helmet.
"I want everyone down here and watching, Ingram!" Arthur called as she departed. "Make sure that traitor Vega is escorted to the combat area." He then chuckled in a self-satisfied manner, no doubt taking note of Danse's stern expression. "Oh don't worry, synth . We showed your precious general all the courtesies that the Brotherhood has to offer while we interrogated her."
Danse knew that Arthur trying to rile him up was technically a good sign. It meant that the other man was attempting to disperse some of his own nerves. However, it was difficult for him to capitalize upon with the worry of Vega possibly being injured getting added onto the pile of Danse's concerns. The growl erupted from him unintentionally, burring in his chest like a hacksaw. "Maxson, if you-"
"Do not speak to me, freak ." Arthur hissed.
Danse stewed as a crowd began to form. At least now they would have an audience. Hundreds of eyes watching his every move, but also watching Maxson's. Danse hoped that the scribe at the gate hadn't just been spouting optimistic nonsense.
The paladin emerged from his armor, standing at attention beside the frame as a vertibird whirred by overhead, descending from the Prydwen. Upon their first sight of him, the troops began talking amongst themselves. Danse reasoned that it must be quite the shock for most of them, to see him alive and well.
Please be alright, Vega , the paladin begged mentally. Please , Elizabeth .
He heard her coming long before he saw her, watching the crowd part for a lone knight in power armor. "You're a fuckin' piezashet , y'know that? Just a fuckin' asshole! " Backhand roared, struggling and straining against the iron grip of the knight that was dragging her along. "Let me go , y' fuckin' cockass'n sunuva' fuck! "
Danse blinked, a bit impressed with the vitriol the general was spitting considering her appearance. She looked like a stretch of bad road, gaunt, both of her eyes ringed yellow-green from faded bruising and her glasses absent. The whole left side of her face bore the distinct grate marks of the Prydwen's catwalks, indicating that she had been slammed against the floor. Her Vault suit was in shambles, half-ribboned and hanging off of her shoulder at a rakish angle, and her hair was a tangled, greasy mess.
Danse catalogued it all and swiftly tucked it away for later. Compartmentalize . She's alive and ambulatory. Priority is Maxson , he instructed himself sternly. Focus . You can't afford to be distracted right now. You face the elder of the Brotherhood of Steel .
All of that flew out the window the moment he heard Elizabeth's voice crack. "D... Danse? " She asked tremulously, "Danse, you're alive? "
Danse nodded, not looking at her. "For better or for worse, I am."
"I…" Backhand paused. "What's going on, Danse? I-I thought that...I thought you were…"
Her obvious distress gave Danse an odd rush of guilty comfort. She would have missed him. Had she mourned him when she thought he was dead?
  To hell with it .
Danse turned to Elizabeth, carefully tipped her chin up and pressed a corner of the bandanna around his neck to her lips. "For luck." He murmured with a thin smile, cupping the right side of her face so he didn't hurt her. She just stared up at him, those eyes bright with pent-up emotions. The knight securing her coughed awkwardly and Danse stepped back, feeling Vega's gaze on him even as he moved to face Maxson.
Ingram cleared her throat and announced above the rising hubbub, "this is a Litany trial! The conditions are no weapons or armor, strictly empty-handed combat. If Paladin Danse manages to remove our elder from the circle, the Brotherhood has agreed to release the former Knight Vega into Minutemen custody. If our elder removes the paladin from the circle, Paladin Danse has agreed to allow the elder to pass swift judgement upon him."
"Say it how he said it, Proctor!" Danse barked, his deep voice carrying well. "He plans to kill me if he wins, don't shy away from it!" He heard Vega swear before the crowd of knights, aspirants and squires around him voiced their mixture of dismay and apprehension. "Elder Maxson has deemed me a threat to the Brotherhood and has forced my hand. So now we engage in a combat trial as it is written in the Litany."
"Trying to turn my troops against me, abomination?" Maxson huffed as he discarded his heavy battle coat and began rolling up his sleeves. "I can't say I'm surprised, but I am disappointed. I had hoped you would meet your end with some shred of dignity."
Danse shrugged, Backhand's lucky bandanna brushing his chin when he raised his head. "You haven't won yet, Maxson." He reminded the younger man with a sad smile.
Arthur lunged at him suddenly, dust flying with the speed of his approach. Danse barely managed to sidestep, latching on to Arthur's wrist and shoulder. The paladin used the other man's momentum against him, redirecting him around his body and kicking his legs out from beneath him.
"Are we beginning now, Arthur?" He asked sharply, that tactical portion of his brain considering the merits of stomping down on Maxson's groin with all his might.
But no, no, he couldn't--Maxson was the elder -
Arthur flailed on the ground, his face red with fury as he clawed at Danse's hands on him. The paladin released him and stepped back, not overly eager to stay within striking distance of the formidable elder. Unfortunately, Maxson didn't leave him much of a choice in the matter. The younger man darted forward again, too low for Danse to redirect him. The paladin took the brunt of Arthur's shoulder to his midsection, gasping out a pained breath even as he tried to brace his footing.
Arthur's shoulder drove deeper into his stomach and the younger man grappled Danse's legs, heaving him backwards off the ground . Danse frantically grabbed at Maxson's back before the younger man pinned him bodily, the two of them hitting the gravel with a bone-jarring impact.
Danse still hadn't been able to catch his breath and he barely got his arms up in time as Arthur cocked back for his first punch.
Maxson tended to machine-gun when it came to his blows, pummeling his target to a pulp within the first flurry. Danse had watched him fight enough to know that this was possibly the worst position for him to be in. Here, Maxson could just rain attacks down onto him until his damn arms broke, beat him into submission without even having to get him outside the boundaries. "You will die. In the dirt . Like the dog you are!" Maxson screamed as he struck Danse.
He's the elder. He's the elder. But...
Danse gritted his teeth. No . If Maxson was doing to kill him, he was going to work for it. Danse wouldn't hand him his fragile existence on a silver platter. Not anymore. Never again . Every assault, every misguided order, every time his admiration or willingness to help had been taken advantage of…
Danse sucked in a breath and shoved Maxson in the chest with all his might, knocking the other man off of him. " Fuck you Arthur! " He spat, suddenly red-hot angry . He got to his feet and loomed over the elder of the Brotherhood, smoldering with rage.
Maxson seemed confused, like he couldn't believe Danse was actually fighting back . He scrambled back to an upright position, the two of them circling each other much more warily now.
"You should have just laid down and died like a good soldier!" Maxson taunted, feinting a few jabs on the left before he swung in from the right. His fist caught Danse in the jaw, snapping the older man's head to the side as he continued, "should have just let me break you, Danse!"
Danse, reeling from the hit, staggered back a step and dropped to one knee. No, get up . Don't let him do this to you . He forced himself back up, glancing the next punishing blow off his shoulder and then landing a check of his own that sent Maxson sprawling on his back.
"Get up, Arthur!" Danse shouted, his fists clenched. " Get the fuck up and fight me! "
So fast Danse almost missed it, Arthur whipped his combat knife out of his boot sheath and rushed him with it, holding the blade low in an effort to conceal the weapon.
The blade that killed the deathclaw .
The point barely grazed Danse's arm as he flinched back, razor-sharp steel easily parting the flannel and skin beneath it.
He was in trouble now. Maxson unarmed was bad enough, but Maxson using a weapon he was intimately familiar with absolutely spelled certain death for Danse. Never mind that they had agreed on no weapons. Danse doubted anyone was exactly refereeing a Litany trial. As long as they stayed within the circle, he was under the impression that he was on his own.
Arthur slashed wildly at him, no longer bothering for subtlety as he openly attacked Danse with the knife. Maxson had this hideous, leering smirk on his face the whole time; he was playing with his food.
Danse felt like an idiot for even thinking that he had a chance at winning when Maxson buried the blade in his shoulder.
But what else could he do? Die in the dirt , like Arthur had screamed at him?
" You're a cheating sunuvabitch, Arthur! " Vega's voice rang out loud and clear like the crack of a whip. Danse saw her out of the corner of his eye, the woman struggling vainly against the armored vambrace that encircled her waist. " Coward! " She yelled indignantly.
Danse smiled thinly through the pain, gripping Maxson's wrist on the knife with enough force to make Arthur grunt. His free hand clamped down on the crook of Maxson's elbow, keeping the younger man locked in that position. Maxson headbutted him to try and make some space and Danse slammed their heads together harder, baring his teeth and snarling in Arthur's face.
Between the two of them, Arthur would always be smarter and quicker than Danse.
But Danse was stronger . Danse thrived in the trenches and on the front lines. Maxson may have called him a dog as an insult, yet there was truth in his words. Danse was a bulldog , boots on the ground, chewing for the jugular until the day he died. This wasn't his first time fighting for his life against insurmountable odds and he was finally refusing to roll over for Arthur.
Something flashed in Maxson's eyes for a split-second and Danse latched onto it. "You're afraid of me, aren't you Maxson?" He panted, maintaining his death grip as Arthur began to struggle to free himself. "Of what I could do to your leadership, your elder status-"
" Shut the fuck up!" Maxson seethed, the palm of his free hand crashing into Danse's throat. The paladin stumbled back and dropped to the ground, his lungs screaming for air as the blade tore loose. Maxson, instead of just finishing him off, began to pontificate, watching Danse writhe and hack for air in the dirt. "You know Danse, I saw what you had with Cutler and I envied it. I searched for years , trying to find something like it. I failed, naturally. So the only solution was to get Cutler out of the picture. But you were stubborn . You longed for a dead man, entirely ignoring the needs of your leader!" Maxson hissed, grinding the heel of his boot against the wound on Danse's shoulder. "And if I couldn't have you wholly, I would break you."
Danse knew on a technical level that the wound should hurt. His face automatically winced. But all he could focus on was Arthur's words, his confession . The heel of the elder's boot, already sticky with blood, crushed down on the side of Danse's head next.
"Why so quiet now, Danse? Do I behave like a man who fears you, freak? " Maxson mocked him, delivering one last kick before backing away.
Danse laid there in the gravel, bruised, bleeding; dazed not just by pain but by the knowledge that Maxson had sent Cutler away on purpose. Maxson had sent Cutler to his death. Sent Brandis to his death. Sent Danse to his death.
" Well , synth? For being so confident, you are remarkably silent!" Arthur needled. "Where's all that righteous wrath you threatened me with? I wanted a fight! "
Danse noticed dimly that the crowd was entirely still around them. It was eerie, like everyone else had vanished and it was just he and Arthur.
Danse raised his left arm, the whole limb shaking violently, and he curled his fingers to flip Maxson off.
The crowd's judgemental silence dissolved into laughter and rowdy shouts, both for and against the paladin. He vaguely picked up Vega yelling, " Attaboy! "
Arthur sputtered with fury. He leaped at Danse, no doubt enraged enough to slit his throat. All Danse could think to do was hike his knees up, planting them firmly in Maxson's pelvis and then catapulting the smaller man up and over his body. Maxson landed several feet away on his back, giving a pained grunt as the wind was knocked out of him by the impact.
The knife clattered and skidded through the dirt and gravel, out of reach for the moment. Danse floundered to roll over, trying to keep the distance between himself and Arthur while the dust settled. When it did, though, he realized something.
Arthur's entire body was outside the circle.
Danse blinked, eyes wide as he realized that not only did that mean he had won, that meant Arthur had lost. In front of everyone .
" Freak! " Maxson shrieked, staggering back to his feet and pointing an accusatory finger at the wounded paladin. "At least Cutler had the good sense to get himself killed , unlike you and fucking Brandis! " The elder screamed, blood and saliva flying from his mouth. "You two are like goddamn radroaches! "
"Elder Maxson?" Rhys . He sounded so hesitant, so unlike himself. "Sir, did you...did you send our squad out here purposely? "
"It is not your place to question me, Knight! And don't act like Danse didn't tell you as much, I'm certain he wasted no time vilifying me upon your arrival to the Commonwealth!" Maxson spat ruthlessly. "Traitorous liar! "
"I'm afraid the paladin may have been too preoccupied with keeping his squadron alive to convey any personal irritation regarding you , sir." Haylen said dryly. "Perhaps you can fill us in on what we might have missed?"
Maxson, instead of answering, threw himself back at Danse.
  …
Danse hit the ground with Maxson on top of him and Backhand screamed something abusive that was extremely unflattering to the elder's lineage.
Arthur grabbed Danse by the collar of his worn shirt and slammed the back of his head against the ground, the elder appearing to snap as he howled with rage and punched Danse again and again and again -
Vega's fists clenched in her binds and she struggled futilely against the knight holding her, willing Danse to fight back, to do something , don't die on me!
Suddenly a huge gauntlet was seizing Maxson by the seat of his pants, tossing the young man off to the side.
"That is enough ." Brandis, Brandis , how had he even gotten there?! Backhand had last seen him in the bowels of the Prydwen as she was being led out from the cell! The elderly paladin stood tall over the two bedraggled men in the dirt, cracking his knuckles in his gauntlets. "What is the meaning of this, Maxson?" He asked furiously, tone sharp through the speakers of his helmet. "You would disgrace trial by combat in such a manner? How dare you! You bring shame upon the Litany!"
"Stay out of my way, you meddling old fool!" Maxson ordered, getting shakily to his feet.
"Or what, you'll beat me to a pulp as well?" Brandis retorted. "You've turned against your troops, Arthur, the men and women you swore to lead with integrity. You've freely admitted to sending soldiers to their deaths because it suited you , not the needs of the Brotherhood. You've brought nothing but disgrace to our chapter, Arthur! Look around you! " Brandis exclaimed, gesturing at the crowd. "You're a tyrant , Maxson! Not one amongst the ranks would stand up to you, not one would shake you back to reality, and those that tried are now lying in the damn dirt ."
  "Be quiet! "
"You cannot silence me, Maxson." The old paladin said calmly. "You've tried and failed before."
"What would you have me do, Brandis? He's a synth ."
"Perhaps." Brandis allowed. "But all I see is a man who obeyed your stipulations and threw you out of your circle, Maxson. According to our tenets and the Litany, his requests must be met. Release Vega to his custody."
Maxson snarled futilely. "You will regret crossing me, Brandis!" He warned. "Stand down now! "
"I have no squadron left for you to kill, Elder ." The older paladin scoffed a little. "What will you hold over my head? Retirement?" He tipped his helmet towards the knight who had Vega. "I said, release her ."
The knight who had been holding Backhand let her go with a mumbled apology, and without any hesitation she took off at a dead run for Danse. Her whole body ached from the heavy-handed treatment Maxson had inflicted on her, but in the light of getting Danse back it was an easy burden to bear.
She tumbled to her knees, her hands still bound in front of her as she called his name. He groaned in reply, grimacing when she touched his arm. "Danse, holy shit ." Backhand breathed.
The paladin exhaled a broken laugh, barely opening his eyes. "Did I win?" He asked blearily. "Everything is spinning."
Backhand couldn't help the sob that escaped her as Danse pawed blindly at her bound hands, the young woman opening her mouth to say something.
There was a commotion behind her, Brandis shouting " no Maxson! " and then a gunshot. Backhand froze as a plume of dirt kicked up bare inches from Danse's head, the paladin jerking away from the impact.
She pitched herself forward, bridging Danse's form with her own by propping her weight up on her elbows. "Don't move, Danse." She whispered, "I've got you, okay? If he wants to shoot you he's gonna' have to get through me ."
"Don't try to--Vega, I order you to get out of the way! How dare you defy me!" Maxson struggled against Brandis' attempts to take the service pistol from him, waving the gun wildly in the air. " Traitors! Let the synth meet its fate!"
"Vega, you need to... Elizabeth , he'll shoot you, please -" Danse begged, weakly shoving at her side. "The Brotherhood needs-"
" Fuck the Brotherhood, Danse!" Backhand yelled at him. "If this is how they treat you , someone who's spent his entire career fighting for their cause, then I don't want shit to do with them!"
The report of the service pistol cut through the air once more, and Backhand's body collapsed on top of Danse.

Cost of Kindness
Chapter III: Between joy and sorrow
By: sophi-s
Fandom: Darksiders video games
Words: 7,405
Characters: Raphael, Darksiders OC
Warnings: None
Summary:
After a crazy adventure outside of Haven, Nicola finally is in shape to try and find her way back. As sad as she is about it, she bids her farewells to her new angel friend. However, it seems Raphael isn't quite ready to say goodbye just yet. And so the fearful human finds herself in the company of an archangel stuck to her like glue.
--------------------------------------------------
Until the sun peered shyly from behind the horizon to announce the arrival of another dawn, Nicola slept like a log. Literally. She hadn't stirred throughout the whole time of her dreamless, magically induced sleep. Were it not for her steady breathing, because as pale and motionless as she was, some might have thought her dead, not sleeping. After long hours, she finally opened her eyes as the remnants of the arcane haze fell and left her mind unshackled. The fog receded from her sight and she was fully expecting the ceiling of the room she occupied in Haven to greet her. Only to be met with disappointment when the dark interior of an underground tunnel filled her vision instead.
For a couple of seconds she was absolutely stunned, unsure where she was or why. The shock of waking up in a strange place had her frozen while her brain was trying to process what in the actual Hell was happening like when she awoke after her first night spent in the Maker Tree. Slowly, the memories of the recent events creeped back into her head. Raphael. Kitten. Demons. My leg… Right… She did feel much better than before but still a little woozy, possibly because half of her brain wasn't fully awake just yet. Massaging her eyelids to rub away the vestiges of sleep, Nicola sat up and scrutinized her surroundings blinking groggily. The same, damp sewer, the same cold darkness. Yawn, which followed, was so wide one might think Nicola intended to swallow everything in this "room".
Out of the corner of her eye she saw the aforementioned angel sitting a couple of feet away, supporting his head on his hand, elbow on his knee while a small cat slept in the rumpled fabric of his green waistcoat. His hood concealed his features as his wings rested against his back and shoulders which steadily moved up and down in the rhythm of a calm breathing. For a moment it might have seemed Raphael was dozing as well but at the quietest move Nicola made, his wary eyes open to look at her without any traces of sleep in them, glimmering like two bright stars from the shadow the hood was casting over his face. It was so abrupt that it made her jump a little.
"Oh! H- hi! Good morning. If it is morning, I mean.."
At her greeting, the cat perked its head up with a "mrowf" noise and shot her a dirty look for daring to interrupt its rest before yawning almost as widely as she did. Raphael answered her with a nod and a small, affirmative sound in the back of his throat but otherwise remained quiet, content with watching her in silence when Nicola leaned down to inspect her thigh and determine whether or not she was in shape for walking anywhere. And to her not unpleasant surprise, the wound was almost fully healed and moving her leg wasn't painful anymore. She did feel the recently present damage to her muscle but she wouldn't call it "pain". More like strain. And that was in like seventy percent of her body from the previous day, even if not as intense as she expected it to be. She really did over exert herself quite a bit. Still, with all certainty she could say Raphael did an unbelievably good job. If only human doctors were in possession of even a teeny tiny part of the healing abilities he had, the world would've been a much safer place.
Though, she couldn't really decide whether the fact that her leg seemed to be perfectly fine was a good thing or not. On the one hand it would mean that nothing hindered her any longer. If the sun is really up then she should wait no longer and set out to make sure the nightfall doesn't catch her again and look for a way back home. Home… In spite of herself she smiled sadly. How quickly she started to refer to Haven as her second home. Her own was irreversibly lost after all.. Reduced to nothing but a grim rubble with all her childhood memories buried underneath. Nicholas died so that she may get out of there alive. He would love it in Haven if he had a chance to see it… In this last safe sanctum for her kind, other survivors, makers.. They were her new family. She could only imagine how they're feeling right now. She should've been back ages ago. She has to return as quickly as possible. The idea of asking Vulgrim for help wasn't completely off the table. She could probably promise him something in return for taking her to the Tree and give it to him later. Nicola can be pretty convincing if she has to but she wouldn't put that past Vulgrim to deny her still. She'd have to play it smart should she fail to find the way back herself. He doesn't trade in favors in exchange for promises after all. No matter. One way or another, she will get back to Haven. That, or she can say goodbye to her wretched life.
But on the other hand… Glancing up at Raphael, who was half-busying himself with petting the very content cat and half-watching her, she realised with a twinge that she'll have to leave him. In those few short hours he'd done so much for her.. so many things she was grateful for… And on top of that, with how sad and lonely he was, Nicola couldn't help but feel sorry for the poor man. She'd never met an angel before and hadn't come to know one well but those she'd seen when this nightmare started didn't make a good impression on her. Raphael was so much different from his kin. She still wasn't sure why he decided to help her even though he didn't have to. And that made her feel empathetic towards him, especially every time he gave her this suffering look which told her a long story of pain and misery. Nicola may have known him for barely a couple hours, if not less, but somehow the thought of leaving him here possibly never to see him again was making her heart sink. Because of the apocalypse, she was running really low on friends and so no one could blame her for wanting to keep every single one she had left or recently made. And honestly, after the angel saved her life and treated her wounds she would lie if she said he wasn't on the right path into the alarmingly small circle of people she held dear to her. Such experiences have a way of bringing people closer to one another, despite the differences they may possess. And besides, what would leaving him here be if not cruelty?
"You seem… troubled."
Raphael stated, making Nicola look at him again. Even after only a few hours spent with her, he sensed her current mood without a mistake. He was pretty insightful. Not that Nicola was trying overly hard to hide it but still. Maybe that's just something the angels do. She sighed in response. I really am.. She thought. It wasn't as though she didn't have a lot to be grim about but this particular thought at the forefront of her brain bothered her the most at this given moment. She didn't want to go just like that but she knew she had to. If only to make sure other guys are alright. But honestly she doubted that Ulthane would ever let her out of his sight again after the stunt she pulled, no matter what she tells him afterwards. In turn, this might be the last time she sees the kind and selfless, not all there angel. Whether she likes it or not, it was time to bid farewell.
"I… I wanted to thank you again for what you did for me."
She started as she stood up - still a bit wobbly from all the crazy stuff that happened so recently - looking around in search of her backpack and shotgun. Both were resting under a wall not far from where she was laid down before, right next to the place where the mummified Goreclaw used to be. Raphael must've moved it further down the sewer where the rest of the corpses were when she was sleeping. Sooner or later it would start attracting pesky flies and other nasty vermin if not things far worse, not to mention the smell of decomposing meat. A little reluctantly, she flung the backpack over her shoulder and picked up her gun before turning to face Raphael. An increasingly unsettled Raphael who seemed to have taken the hint what she intended to do.
"Really, thanks. It's been very nice to meet you. But I have to go now."
"Go? Where to?"
The barely audible note of fear in his voice and the look he gave her made Nicola feel even worse for having to part ways with him.
"I'm going.. home."
Nicola to some extent knew how to read certain people but the blank stare of the angel before her was giving her a really hard time.
"Look, I can't stay here and I'm sorry but I have to go.."
She said hesitantly and turned towards the exit from the tunnel to leave for the surface, quietly wishing she didn't suck at saying her goodbyes. This was one of her greater weaknesses, right after small animals. Especially cats.
"Goodbye. And good luck! I hope we'll meet again.."
With that short farewell, Nicola turned away to walk off into the sewer and begin her search for Haven. But a firm grip on her shoulder stopped her from taking more steps and made her glance back in bewilderment. Somehow, Raphael shifted from a sitting position to standing and closed the distance between himself and Nicola in one beat without producing a single sound. Not going to lie, it was quite scary and Nicola couldn't help a startled squeak that escaped her. But even though he spooked her yet again, the distressed face he pulled made Nicola bite her lower lip. And the hesitant plea leaving his mouth made it even worse.
"Stay…"
"I- I can't! I really need to go!"
"Please…?"
Raphael quietly begged her. His flared and bristled wings were quivering anxiously and his face bore the most pitiful pleading look she'd ever seen. God, why do you have to make this so difficult? It was strange. He'd been doing fine without Nicola for who knows how long. Well… fine might not be the right word to use in this case but whatever. Though, now that she thinks about it, it makes sense that he wouldn't want to be left alone again. Especially because loneliness doesn't serve healthy people well and Raphael looked like someone who could use the help of a specialist. Still, Nicola found herself asking.
"Why do you want me to stay?"
Instead of answering, Raphael glanced down from her face, looking at the point on her chest, just below her collarbone. Nicola awkwardly cleared her throat to get his attention once she felt like his gaze was going right through her mortal shell and piercing into her very core.
"Uhh.. What exactly are you thinking about?"
Not bothered by it, Raphael squinted and lifted his forefinger, extending it to the place he was looking at. And seriously, for a second Nicola was considering batting his hand away since it could without a doubt be viewed as invasion of personal space when the pad of his finger connected with her chest where it ended and her neck began. And in this moment white flash passed through Nicola's eyes, followed by a deathly chill somewhere inside, tearing into her heart from within with icy claws like a vicious beast. As though someone had poured freezing cold water into her body. And amidst this coldness was a tiny wisp of warmth pressed against her ribcage, as if it was trying to get out. To get as close to Raphael as possible. She gasped in shock and fear and from the unexpected and not physical pain - so intense it made her feel sick - which wasn't really… her own. She felt it, experienced it but she knew it wasn't hers. Somehow Nicola knew that it belonged to someone else. And this someone was standing right in front of her.
Slowly but surely, it was starting to make sense. Why Raphael was constantly so shaky, so easily frightened, so… wrong. It all lasted barely a fraction of a second before both she and Raphael abruptly backed away with astonishment painted across their faces. Neither of them was entirely sure what on God's green earth just happened or why it happened. Whatever it was, neither of them would say it felt pleasant. Nicola was fairing better than the angel however. While she was only mildly frightened and befuddled, he immediately retreated into the corner and curled up on the floor, wrapping himself up in a feathery cocoon of his wings, trembling like a leaf on a gale.
"Raphael..?"
She huffed trying to steady her own breathing as she cautiously approached him just when he started to mutter obscene nonsense again. This time Nicola couldn't even determine what exactly he was saying. He spoke way too quickly and he was only able to pick up single words like "torment", "soul" or "help". This odd sensation, this pain she felt was undoubtedly in him. All. The time. Every day of his existence. It became clear. Nicola could imagine that even she would sooner or later go absolutely mad if the suffering he's experiencing without a moment of rest was hers. It was nothing short of a miracle that he retained at least some small semblance of who he used to be. Ever since she came to him, he did start to make more sense than before, possibly because she could at least partially distract him from this pain. But if he needed distraction, why would he leave his White City behind? Angels may have been mean to her race but surely they would help out their brother in need, right?
All questions Nicola had most likely could be answered by a story of his past which he wasn't ready to reveal just yet. Perhaps, if she's careful enough, one day he will open up and tell her about it. But until then, she remained in darkness of uncertainty. Still, she couldn't help but wonder.. Carefully, she crouched and laid her hand on Raphael's shaking shoulder, making his head snap up with a fearful look to his round, empty glowing eyes.
"Who… who did this to you?"
The angel opened his mouth as if to answer her but no words came out. Only a soft huff. Tears welled up in Nicola's eyes when his face scrunched up in something between anguish and misery. And that was enough for her to snap. In spite of herself, Nicola reached around the angel's neck and pulled him into a tight hug burying her face into the side of his green hood which despite the stench surrounding everything here still held a barely noticeable scent of something that brought to mind clean cotton with a tint of vanilla. His entire body went rigid as she did but only for a moment. Merely seconds later, he relaxed, his breathing evened out and he moved his own arms around her back to return the embrace that brought a tiny bit of comfort that could at least partially fill the emptiness he felt within for so long he couldn't even remember how it is to not feel it.
"Don't leave me alone…"
He breathed against her ear, clinging to her desperately as if letting go of her would mean his inevitable end. Up this close, Nicola could feel his heart - much bigger and more powerful than her human one - hammering uneasily against his ribcage. Similar, but completely different. And for some reason, her own heart suddenly skipped and beat once alongside his in the exact same rhythm before everything returned to normal. Or maybe she was just imagining things? Possibly…
This warm and tight embrace, even though it was meant to comfort him, still gave Nicola an odd feeling of safety. All of the sudden Raphael seemed to her not like a stranger she met by chance not even a day ago but like a good, old friend she knew she can trust no matter what. The decision of leaving Raphael behind was difficult enough before but now… her heart fell to pieces. It was next to impossible. She couldn't just leave him like this. He doesn't deserve to be abandoned again. No one does.
What do I do? Nicola knew she could neither stay with him, nor can she return to Haven without risking that her conscience would make her feel shitty for the rest of her goddamned days and that a thought that she doomed some poor soul to descend into utter insanity would make her share his fate. But there has to be something she can do.. Anything.. Then, an epiphany struck her.
"Wait.."
She said once Raphael let her go and she could look him in the eye as he gave her a questioning yet hopeful stare.
"You could come with me!"
"Come with you..?"
"Yeah! The Tree is much safer than here and there's a lot of useful stuff there. Also, it doesn't stink that much…"
Not only that. Other survivors, even as skeptical as they are towards angels, surely wouldn't mind Raphael poking around. Having a skilled healer on their side would certainly change their mind even if they weren't eager to let him stay. Ulthane, Elanya and Yarin can be persuaded if they don't agree at first. After all, if Raphael's presence will mean that "wee uns' " are even safer, then Nicola couldn't think of a reason why they shouldn't relent. Not to mention that Raphael can fly. It would make it a child's play to find the Tree. Back in Haven she could also get the poor angel patched up and cleaned up a bit, since he himself is in a rather sorry state. That's the least she could do for him in return. Only one thing was left to do, considering how uncertain Raphael looked. Convince him.
"What is this… Tree?"
"This is a safe place for us, humans, and it's… kinda our new home now."
Before, Nicola was absolutely certain Raphael's eyes couldn't turn bigger and rounder but he was very quick to prove her wrong. Not to lie, it was quite impressive. He blinked a couple of times as if to make sure he heard it right.
" 'Us' ? There is… more of you out there..?"
Nicola nods enthusiastically once she realises she's on the right path.
"Yeah! Ulthane made us a safe place to-"
"Ulthane?"
He interrupted with confusion on his face, making Nicola stop in mid sentence to look at him questioningly.
"Ulthane… the Black Hammer?"
"Yes, he's a-.. Wait… you know him?"
Humming thoughtfully, Raphael drummed his fingers against the cold floor. His answer didn't clarify much however.
"No.. Azrael does.."
"Who?"
An angel most likely. Probably one of Raphael's former acquaintances. Mentioning this "Azrael" seemed to have brought some memories back, very fond ones at that since for the first time today, a ghost of a smile passed across Raphael's face and an absent look in his eyes turned warmer and not so frightened anymore.
"Friend.."
Seriously, for a moment Nicola wanted to say that she's sorry because she just assumed that Raphael's friend could be dead but she bit her tongue before she could tell him that when she realised he actually used the present tense and not past. Which indicates that Azrael, whoever he is, is still out there somewhere. Instead, she wanted to tell him more about Haven but he once again interrupted her.
"The Balance is upset.. the Third Kingdom is vital to it… Humans. Humans live still? Not everything is lost then.."
Oh boy, here we go again. Unwittingly, Nicola pulled an annoyed face. For the umpteenth time, Raphael unintentionally made her feel like an uneducated imbecile. Why is the Universe even more complicated than we initially thought?
"Yes, he does the right thing.. They need a protector."
Nicola decided to patiently wait until Raphael is finished thinking out loud, even though she once again had no clue what he's saying. What Balance? Third Kingdom? The what?
"The Horsemen cannot do this alone… It is the duty of us all… to- to uphold the Balance."
The WHO??? Nicola could only imagine how stupid she looked with that dumb face she just made. What. The actual fuck. The Horsemen? As in… the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse? They are real too? So it is a legit end of the world like the one in the Bible! How lovely! It's honestly a miracle that anyone has lived if that's the case. What else? Maybe it will suddenly turn out that snow is warm, sun is cold and skunks don't stink. Though with all the chaos going on around, Nicola would hardly be surprised if dogs suddenly started chirping and birds barking. She really just wished for the things to calm down already.. Returning to normal seemed to be off the table unfortunately but for God's sake, can the demons at least just go home or something? But… Now that she thinks about it… Could the mysterious warrior clad in crimson be one of the infamous Four? He didn't look like an angel, even though he bore quite a few similarities to Heaven's denizens, nor did he seem purely demonic in nature. And he was there when the Apocalypse began.. Curious. Especially because if it wasn't for his interference, Nicola would have probably been dead by now. All he did was stop for just a second to tear the bus door out once he saw her struggling to open it from the inside. Maybe he was, maybe he wasn't, who knows? Eventually, Raphael glanced at her with a more certain look on his face.
"You don't stand a chance. Not against the Destroyer."
Yeah, no shit, Sherlock.. Nicola thought, still having the clear image of the flaming dragon standing barely fifteen feet away from where she was hiding in her head as if it happened yesterday. He was terrifying, no one is taking this away from him, but screw that! That's one gigantic motherfucker. Nicola was pretty sure she could comfortably live in a room that was the size of his goddamned head. If he tried to eat her, she'd probably get stuck between his teeth at best. And so far that's the last place she wanted to find herself in. She really didn't need help in figuring out that a bunch of humans still shitting their pants at the sight of a single Wicked could stand up to the bloody Destroyer. What are they, the legendary dragon-slaying knights or something? Not to be pessimistic or anything.. but Nicola wouldn't be surprised if that thing could kill her by so much as breathing in her direction. He does breathe fire after all. It goes without saying that he also has a huge horde of ugly assholes under his whim, jumping at the tiniest flick of his tail. So yeah. Chances for success in an open confrontation are pretty miniscule. Fortunately, what Raphael said next made her sigh with relief.
"You need all the help you can get… I will come. If this is your wish…"
Victory! Now that was the solid dose of serotonin Nicola had been missing for quite some time. Not only can she return home and assure her strange little family that she's alright but also she doesn't have to leave her newfound friend behind. Her conscience will stay clean, Raphael will be safe in Haven, maybe even recover to some extent, and the humans will have a powerful angel healer on their side. To her it was a win-win.
"You will?! That's awesome, thanks!"
Nicola was quick to gather her humble possessions and waited for Raphael to get up and take whatever he needed. But surprisingly, all he took was the kitten which he held against his chest since it wasn't really pleased about being manhandled but the angel simply ran his finger through the fur on its head to put it back to sleep again before depositing it to a small knapsack he had on his belt where it could rest safely. Apparently, he wasn't attached to anything he stored in his hideout over the time he spent here. Well, there weren't many useful things to take anyway. At least that's what Nicola thought before, because Raphael leaned over one of the bigger crates and reached for something apparently hidden behind it. And oh boy, the thing he pulled out… An ornate, gilded staff, as tall as Nicola is. The centerpiece was flanked by two slender serpents coiling around it in a beautiful, symmetrical way to the very top crowned by a pair of wings and a ring between them.
"Whoa…"
No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't hide her amazement. That was some sick looking staff. The design seemed to ring a bell but she couldn't quite tell where exactly. Unlike Raphael himself, the staff was well kept, clean and undamaged, even if a bit tarnished. Apparently in his solitude, the angel cared for it well and often. For this last piece of home he has, Nicola realised with a pang of sadness. Even in his fond expression she could see the attachment to this one small part of his past. Okay, maybe not that small… Once Raphael was ready and glanced at Nicola to confirm it, she nodded and walked off into the dark tunnel with the angel trailing after her like a duckling.
"Oh, and by the way…"
Considering what Nicola had seen before, she figured it would be best to warn Raphael about some of Haven's denizens. Well.. by some she specifically meant Vulgrim. Despite his queer way of being and shiftiness, Nicola still somewhat liked him. The demon merchant was hardly a good material for a friend but so far he proved only two things to her. That he can be cunning and annoying. And that he's unbelievably helpful. And in truth, Nicola couldn't help but grow a little fond of her exceptional neighbour. Especially because Vulgrim was the only demon so far that didn't try to kill her where she stood but instead engaged in a conversation. That might be because he's just scared of Ulthane but he seemed rather harmless. Hell, he even sometimes provided useful resources if Haven could afford a trade with him. In a way, he too was helping humans survive. But if he suddenly jumped out of that Serpent Hole of his… Nicola could already see Raphael blasting the demon into Oblivion without a second thought. And that was something she didn't want to happen. Better safe than sorry.
"There's this… guy sometimes swinging by to say hello to us.."
Even as she spoke, she didn't stop walking and the quiet tapping of the end of the staff against the floor told her that Raphael kept following. How do I explain to an angel that a demon means no harm?
"The name's Vulgrim. He's a little… Ugh, how do I put it?"
"A demon… Crafty fiend, far more powerful than he lets on. Yet, so… deceivingly docile.."
Nicola halts as though she's just come face first into an invisible barrier once she heard Raphael grumble distastefully to himself. Turning around, she gawked at him with non hidden shock. And while she expected anger or at least disgust, Raphael looked rather… resigned for the lack of a better term. And only ever so slightly annoyed.
"You know Vulgrim?"
That literally came out of nowhere. The description of Vulgrim Raphael just gave was so unbelievably accurate. Nicola already suspected that the demon is much more dangerous than he seems but simply refuses to put his power to use and do something constructive with it. And now she got a confirmation. From a very unlikely source but still. Raphael was quick to offer a clarification and answered her question with his own.
"Who doesn't?"
"Ah, that's fair.."
She chuckled. Vulgrim is that kind of a "person", who seems to know everyone and has been to pretty much everywhere. He offers his merchandise to every creature that can afford it and it shouldn't be that surprising that some people, even angels like Raphael know him, or at least know of him. She suspected the latter part in this case. This makes it much easier to explain to Raphael that he's a friend.
"He's cool though! He's helping us keep it together and doesn't really bother anyone in the Tree. Vulgrim is really helpful if he wants to."
To this, Raphael answered with a doubtfully raised eyebrow and a thoughtful hum. He didn't seem convinced but what he said fully satisfied Nicola.
"Hmmmm… so I was told.."
Before they even noticed, they were right below the well lid which was Nicola's original entrance to the sewer. And honestly? She was so glad that she decided to come down here. Otherwise, she wouldn't have met Raphael. Some part of her still dreads to wonder what would happen to him if she didn't find him. He was already at the brink of losing it but now it didn't seem as bad as before. In a way, Nicola saved him too, it seems. Before, he was barely registering what was happening around. Now he was more or less capable of a relatively normal conversation. Sure, he tended to talk to himself quite a lot but she supposed that the solitude and whatever nightmares he'd been through have taken their toll. Climbing up the ladder, Nicola pushed the lid out of the pavement and immediately the golden light of the new day spilled through it, banishing the darkness and ouch, it hurt her poor eyes.
Even though Nicola wasn't in utter blackness all the time thanks to the arcane wisp of light that followed Raphael everywhere whenever he needed it, the bright pillar of sunlight struck her like a physical force, leaving her mostly blind for a good ten seconds. Still, another breath of fresh air tasted like ambrosia to her. No stench of the sewer and rotting meat. Thank God.. It took only a few seconds afterwards for her sight to get used to the brightness but still she needed a moment to wipe the tears from her eyes. Before she exited the sewer however, a quiet hiss behind her made her stop.
Looking over her shoulder, she saw Raphael recoiling from the light with his eyes squeezed tightly shut and a grimace on his face, shielding himself from the radiance with his left wing. Right.. How long he'd spent down there, Nicola could only guess but she could understand how dizzy it might've made him and how much it burned his darkness-adjusted eyes. More than that, to him the sunlight probably felt like it does to a goddamn vampire.
"Raphael? You okay?"
The angel didn't answer her, simply kept still, slowly lowering his wing to look at the light flowing through the opened way out, blinking rapidly so that his eyes adjusted to it quicker. And once they did.. Without a word, he hesitantly reached out towards the bright sun rays and put his bandaged hand right through the border where the light and dark clashed with one another. And immediately, once the warm glow caressed his skin, his face brightened in mute fascination. The fact that he hadn't seen the daylight for way too long became ever so apparent to Nicola and made something twist inside of her sadly.
"The sun…"
Raphael breathed and let his mouth form a wide grin once he fully entered the illuminated area and turned his face up with his eyes closed to soak it in.
"Blessed Creator, I missed it.. oh how I missed it…"
It took less than a second for Nicola to decide that she's going to let him have that moment. They were in a rush, true, but she simply didn't have it in her to tell him to hurry. She didn't want to interrupt him because even with all the dust and grime on his emaciated face, for the first time since she'd met him, Raphael looked so unbelievably happy. Truly happy. Just because he could feel the warm light of the sun upon his skin. And with a full smile he underwent a sudden change. All fear left him, his features softened and Nicola would dare say that even as broken, mad and defeated, in this short moment he looked… beautiful. As an angel, which humans often imagined, should. Under all that dirt something was glistening from the surface of his skin under his eyes, on his cheeks and forehead, the sunlight painted warm streaks on his long, white hair that fluttered on the cool breeze from above. In spite of herself she smiled too. This look to him suited him far better than a sorrowful, troubled frown. She could already tell, she will be always trying her best to save this precious smile.
With a deep breath of fresh air, Raphael opened his eyes to look out at the clear sky in shades of delicate blue and… in a flash of gold accompanied by a quiet whizz disappeared. Nicola's jaw fell open. Her human mind will never stop getting surprised over the stuff like that. And even if it will, it's going to take a long time. Before she could even start wondering where the angel vanished to, a large silhouette blocked out the sun. Still a bit surprised, Nicola looked up right at Raphael's kind face and his outstretched hand as he offered her help in getting out of the stinking well. So he can teleport. Lucky bugger. To be frank, Nicola felt a small sting of jealousy. And while she expected him to simply let her hold onto him as she pulled herself out, he hoisted her up in one fluid motion and set her on the pavement beside him the moment she took his hand.
The odd angel kept surprising her. Despite his thin frame, he was quite strong. For human standards that is, she didn't know how his physical strength was viewed among his brethren. During the initial armageddon she caught glimpses of much more sturdy-looking angels after all. The memory actually made her wonder if Raphael knew that one angel she saw talking to the warrior in red. The one who got… brutally squashed by that gigantic fuck-off demon that nearly made her heart refuse to keep fighting out of pure horror before she booked it. At least she could only assume that he got squashed because as soon as she saw the hand shoot out from the pit of boiling magma below she averted her eyes not to look at it and all she remembered now was a female voice desperately crying out a name she couldn't quite recall right now.
I'll ask him another time. She thought as he was pulling her out into the outside world. Still, the caution he did it with… Sighing inwardly, Nicola realised that Raphael already has something in common with her other bizarre friends. He too handled her as though one uncareful move could harm her and treated her as though she was made of porcelain. For quite some time Ulthane was afraid to even touch any of them not to break something and there were very few people in Haven who could resist poking a little fun at the maker. Oh well. Looks like it's a privilege that last members of the human race get. Everything is either super gentle with you or is trying to ruthlessly murder you. Nothing in between so far. Only Vulgrim seemed to be mostly neutral towards them but that was one exception.
Outside of the sewer the day was unusually warm. The sun was shining down at the crumbling Earth from a clear sky, no clouds hindered its rays and the air movement was a bare minimum. Nicola didn't wait long before unzipping her vest. Cooking inside of it was the last thing she fancied right now. Judging by how high the sun already was, she'd say it was far past the morning hours. Actually, maybe even somewhere around midday. Looking down at her watch confirmed that she guessed it right since it showed the exact time of
11:56 A.M.
Now's the high time she started looking for a way back. She walked over to one of the tallest buildings nearby to search for a suitable vantage point - careful this time, not to get jumped by some asshole again - and glanced back to see if Raphael was still following her. And in agreement to what he'd accidentally shared with her back in his hideout, Nicola has taken a note that he's.. limping. He was leaning on his ornate staff heavily and his eyebrows were furrowing with each step he took but his eyes were quickly shifting between all directions of his surroundings, always on watch for a threat. Still, there was an ever-present weariness to his pace. To put it simply, Raphael looked tired and moved with difficulty, as though he was in constant pain. In a way, he was.. But somehow Nicola knew it wasn't really the same pain one feels when getting injured or ill. This was something… else.
Nicola decided maybe she will ask him about it later, once they're safe. Maybe. They had to find Haven before the sun sets after all. No time to waste. Though… she didn't really know how to approach the matter. Raphael had done so much for her already. Asking him for help and a lift made Nicola feel incredibly awkward. Especially because she wasn't quite sure if asking an angel to fly her somewhere was considered rude by his people. But it had to be done. Otherwise, they might not make it on time.
"Hey.. Raphael? I forgot to say that but… there's a little problem.."
"A problem..?"
Raphael cocked his head to the side as he looked down at the small human woman wringing her hands nervously. Why was she nervous? The archangel could no longer sense or even see fear in her, yet something was still wrong. For some reason she was feeling uncomfortable, whether it was his presence or something she was about to say.
Why should she ever trust you? Your kind destroyed her life!
And that was unfortunately the truth. Half of it at least. Demons too had their part in it. Raphael knew he holds no ill intentions towards her or her kin hiding from the Apocalypse in the Tree she kept talking about but something told him that Nicola is still afraid of him. She just doesn't know it yet.
"I'm not entirely sure where we need to go.. I got… a little lost..?"
Ah. So that's the problem. Honestly, Raphael was half-expecting something truly horrendous but if being lost is the only problem they have - for now that is - then there's nothing to worry about. The directions to the safe place are surely buried in her mind somewhere, accessible and possible to dig out. All she needed was a gentle nudge in the right direction. And if that doesn't work, Raphael can always try to search through her memories himself if she won't have a problem with that. Though, considering how fragile humans are, both physically and mentally, Raphael didn't want to risk irreparably damaging her mind that way. This was the last resort. Instead, he reached out to her and laid his hand on her shoulder, summoning his magic to take both of them to the top of the crumbling block of flats looming over them.
"Wh- whoa! Hoo.. lee!"
Nicola loudly exclaimed to make her astonishment apparent once they reappeared on the rooftop high above the destroyed city. Raphael could only imagine how odd teleportation must feel to a human who's absolutely devoid of any magical abilities and not used to it being used around them.
"Will this help?"
Shrugging off the surprise, the human walked up to the ledge, so close it made Raphael feel mildly uncomfortable, and looked out at her ruined home bathed in daylight. Squinting at the sun and shielding her eyes from its shine, Nicola looked around, murmuring under her breath
"Gimme a second.. The cathedral is there, the shopping mall there… So the Tree should be somewhere around-…"
She tapped her chin thoughtfully for a moment before she turned to her left and her face immediately brightened as she pointed into the distance.
"There! Look!"
Glancing towards the place Nicola was pointing out, Raphael could barely make out a massive shape between ruined buildings. It really did look like a grand tree. An enormous shadow standing tall above the ground. And Nicola was pretty much vibrating with ecstasy and shifting on her feet like a small child impatiently waiting for something amazing to happen and beaming.
"It's right there! We did it!"
She squealed like an excited child as well. But Raphael knew it might be too early for celebration. That was quite a long way… How she even got from there to here anyway, he may never find out. What's more important, if Nicola wanted to make it all the way back there, it might take her a whole day if not longer and each minute spent out in the open means that demons have a bigger chance of discovering her and putting an end to her existence. And that Raphael couldn't allow. Every human that survived counts. He could see why she asked him to come with her and he decided he won't fail her. He won't fail anyone ever again. The faster they leave, the better. Turning to the excited woman standing beside him, the archangel unfolded his arms and crouched.
"Hold on to me…"
Nicola's mood shifted instantly. Sometimes it was kind of disturbing how humans can turn from happy to sad, angry to calm, excited to apprehensive and vice versa in the matter of seconds. Her eyebrows wandered up as she eyed him cautiously.
"Huh? You want to-..."
In response, Raphael gave her the most reassuring smile he was capable of despite the coldness of his tattered soul feeling especially troublesome today after he unwittingly created some sort of a link with Nicola. Or maybe not as much with her, as with the bright, heavenly spark inside of her. By all means, the flash of blinding pain, as intense as the day he tore out the first fragment of his being and multiplied by the amount of times he repeated this, was not a pleasant experience. The memory still lingered at the back of his head but he tried anyway.
"Trust.."
He simply said, making Nicola swallow and smile nervously, half-heartedly joking
"O- okay. Just don't drop me, alright?"
“Of course..”
She uncertainly conceded and wrapped her arms around Raphael's neck for the second time this day, holding on so tightly that for a human it would surely be excruciating. No wonder. A human doesn't need to fall from a very high place to get themself killed or at least crippled for the rest of their life. But Raphael had no intention of letting her fall. Putting his free arm around her, holding her securely against his chest, the archangel unfolded his grand wings. The soft breeze rolling above the city immediately caught in his feathers, calling and beckoning him into the vast skies. It's been way too long since his last flight. Luckily, it's an ability that once learned is never forgotten.
Raphael shot up into the air just as Nicola tightened her grip even more, holding on no worse than a koala bear. Not wasting any more time, he swept over the human city turned into a dreary graveyard, heading towards the Maker Tree and gladly leaving the sewers behind in favor of the brighter future opening up before him for the first time in centuries.

Listen, Raphael needs and deserves a hug, okay? For being a precious guy <3
Send over all the hugs for him 💓
EDIT: Gonna upload it on AO3 tomorrow

Breakdown of the short TV promos for The 100 season 7
with screenshots and speculation!
While we’re waiting for the trailer to come out (which should happen by the end of this week, “hopefully” today according to Jason Rothenberg’s latest tweet), and after we’ve secured Eliza the victory she deserves as E-Online’s Top Leading Lady, I’ve watched the two short TV promos that CW has aired during other shows, which are both now on YouTube. Although both versions of the promo are pretty short (the second one is slightly longer and more interesting), there’s a surprising amount of various scenes.Although some of them are blink and miss it,  there are a lot of dramatic shots of random people fighting or getting killed or taken captive, and all of it is out of context.
However, the press release with the descriptions of the first 4 episodes helps figure out what some of the scenes may be. It looks like there are many shots from the season premiere, but also scenes from 7x02, 7x04 and the backdoor pilot (7x08).
youtube
youtube
Bellamy crying seems to be the continuation of his last scene in 6x13. He even still has the same clothes and is crying over Octavia disappearing from his arms into thin air. This is definitely 7x01, maybe even the first scene.
The second scene also seems to be Bellamy - Octavia would've bled onto his arms before she disappeared.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also outside Sanctum: this shot in the woods. I have no idea what's going on here, a person is crouching on the ground - Bellamy? Someone else? Is this Anomaly-related?
Tumblr media
Speaking of the Anomaly...
The person sitting on the ground looks like Gabriel. But why is he just sitting there? It wouldn't be surprising if he went into the Anomaly. He's certainly nowhere to be seen in Sanctum scenes.
Tumblr media
These people, who look very SciFi and  are obviously connected to the Anomaly,    are likely to be new antagonists - and this may be from 7x01 From the Ashes, when, according to the press release, “ a new threat rises in the woods”. Their masks have a design similar to the title card of S7 opening titles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meanwhile, in Sanctum:
“Clarke (Eliza Taylor) and her friends attempt to rebuild Sanctum “ (press release for 7x01 From the Ashes) but “As Raven (Lindsey Morgan) faces an unexpected threat, Clarke (Eliza Taylor) must keep the peace among opposing factions in Sanctum” (7x03 False Gods).
The Children of Gabriel (we see Nelson among them) vs Earthkru? Is that the conflict now? What's going on with the Sanctumites who still worship Primes and those who hate them? Are Wonkru and Eligius prisoners going to be in conflict, too?
Tumblr media
Raven (who's back to her pre-S6 look, and even has a red jacket - not the one she had in S1-2) tells Murphy and Emori (looking normal, not like fake Primes) that "This place is a powder keg.” “It always ends the same..."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also in Sanctum -  Indra (still in her warrior gear), saying "New world, same problems"
Tumblr media
and Clarke talking to Gaia (in front of an idyllic looking house with a fence, maybe where she lives with Madi now in Sanctum) - "I used to think fighting is what we do... now I worry that fighting is what we are." We aren't done with the S6 angsty soul-searching!
Tumblr media
And in a different mood -my favorite moment in the promos, Clarke punching Russell! I thought it wasn't him at first, so I thought "I wish she was punching Russell" but it is. It’s his clothes, and they are in the Sanctum shrine. (It's just obviously not JR, but a stunt double, which is unfortunately pretty obvious, LOL.)
Tumblr media
s he still Russell or Sheidheda as Russell? He's certainly yelling the same way he yelled "I want REVENGE!" in 6x13 (f*ck you, Russell). Now it's "I want DEATH!". His death? I wish. We're not that lucky. And it looks like he's talking to Brainwashed!Jordan. (sigh)
Tumblr media
Outside Sanctum, at night, Clarke (with a great new leather jacket) is pointing a gun at someone in the 1st promo... And it becomes clear in the 2nd promo that she's pointing the "Mysterious outsiders (who) arrive with news of Clarke’s missing people" in 7x04 Hesperides.
The mysterious strangers are led by the bald white dude who says: "You are the key to winning the last war mankind will wage". Wow! Color me intrigued!
Since she only has Gaia, Niylah and some guys with her,  it's safe to say Bellamy, Echo (+probably Gabriel) are among the missing people.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which, however, doesn't mean Bellamy, Echo and Gabriel are in the same location.
The trailer only shows Bellamy in the early scene of crying over Octavia, and he's not mentioned at all in the press releases, so it seems his storyline is too spoilery and they’re keeping it under wraps.
In this interview, Jason said about Clarke in season 7: “And as we’ll see going forward, she is now definitely determined to not lose any of her family again, in a way that is almost obsessive. Her family being Madi of course, and Bellamy and Raven and Murphy; these are all people that she loves and is not going to lose. “ Which I have (mis)interpreted as Jasonspeak for Clarke obsessed with saving Bellamy. ;)
Unlike Bellamy, we do see what Echo is up to. Here she is with short hair  as one of those new masked Anomaly people, on some kind of mission? Possibly undercover?
Tumblr media
(Remember when the fandom decided Echo was dead because Tasya cut her hair? LOL I always thought the drawing such conclusions from BTS things made no sense. Likewise, it’s now clear how silly it was to decide some characters must have died early because actors were off in LA for a while. I don’t know why so many people think the cast are glued to the set 24/7 for 6 months, and we now know that episodes were shot out of order - because there are multiple locations, with different characters/actors, so an actor could take a few weeks or even a full month off while they are shooting on another location and a storyline they aren’t involved in. For episode 1x08, the backdoor pilot - which was shot late and is production number 7x13 - that would have probably meant the entire regular cast had a few weeks off. I’m sure the cast took the chance to go and audition for new roles - at least one of them, Lindsey, got cast in a new show while the shooting of The 100 was halfway.)
We also see one of these new Anomaly soldier people here, looking pretty threatening as they pull out some kind of a weapon.
Tumblr media
Definitely the Anomaly here and - wow, that's Diyoza the way we've never seen her before. Looks like a "garden of Eden". Probably Hope's flashbacks from the episode 7x02 The Garden (according to the press release: "Echo and Gabriel learn more about Hope and her mysterious past").
Tumblr media
And here’s Octavia and young Hope, who's nodding her head. Looks like they are in some kind of danger. Third time lucky for O, after Ethan and Rose.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't know what this person is looking at, but they seemed shocked... and I think the large green eyes are Hope's. In fact, this is probably again young Hope.
Tumblr media
Now here's the truly weird stuff. Octavia, in her season 1 tank top, in a sterile white laboratory that looks a lot like Mount Weather, being experimented on under the supervision of someone who looks like Dante Wallace? (We see this same shot in both promos, but mirror flipped in one of them.)
Whatever this is, I'm sure it's NOT the actual MW. And it sure as hell isn’t a simulation by Dante and the Mountain Men. They’re super dead.
What I think is going on here - it could be another trippy sequence for any reason, but I like the theory that the Anomaly somehow shows people alternative realities, things that might have been, What if? scenarios.
Tumblr media
Unlike the other scenes in Sanctum, this one is likely to be from a later episode.  If this is even in Sanctum, have no idea where Emori is and what's happening to her... but probably nothing good.
Tumblr media
Nothing good is happening to this guy, either. The way the lightning goes from sea green to red/purple suggests that something Anomaly-related may be happening here?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Probably somewhere on Alpha:  A body (unconscious or dead?) being dragged.
(A bunch of people are convinced it's Bellamy, which is weird, because this person's build looks absolutely nothing like Bellamy.  Or that it’s Gabriel, when this person is clearly nowhere near his height. This can only be him if they picked a body double extremely poorly. Though to be fair, there was that hilariously badly photoshopped season 5 promo image of Bellamy where they stuck Bob’s head on a body of some skinny guy with narrow shoulders, so IDK,)
Tumblr media
Someone on a motorbike outside Sanctum.
Please someone remind me who else can ride a bike. I know many of the people from Sanctum can and Clarke can because she picked up the skill from Josephine. Anyone else?
Tumblr media
An unknown man taken captive by someone. He has similar Anomaly symbols on his forehead as Hope.
Tumblr media
I’m pretty sure this is from the backdoor pilot (7x08 Anaconda) and these people dying from radiation are probably Second Dawn members who weren't among the chosen ones and went to Cadogan's decoy bunker.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally, this person must have died a sudden, instant and grisly death and quite a while ago. It could be another scene from the backdoor pilot - when the survivors got out off the bunker and saw the victims of the death wave.
Or maybe someone who was caught in a temporal flare on Alpha, which almost happened to Octavia in season 6 before she hid in the live sand. But I don’t know if the temporal flare would have instantly killed them, or just aged them a lot until they die a little later. Death wave seems more likely.

Fictober Day 3
3. “How can I trust you?”
Prompt provided by this post!
Fandom: Fallout 4 (M!Sole Survivor/Paladin Danse)
The air was heavy in the bunker, Michael could feel it the second he stepped out of the elevator. He closed his eyes, pausing for so long that the door slid closed again and left him alone in the quiet box, his stomach twisting and turning.
Every decision he’d ever made, he’d made with certainty. Both before the dropping of the bombs, and every moment after his emergence into a dead world. But Danse was the only person he’d known since his wife was ripped away that could make him hesitate. If only for a moment.
He took a breath, and pressed the button to open the doors, and then stepped through.
Danse was waiting for him in the back room, where he always waited. He’d finally stopped wearing that damn Brotherhood suit. Michael had rewarded him the first time by fucking with his hair for nearly a straight hour, running his fingers through it again and again until it was a mess and stuck up in odd directions. It was fluffy, and soft, and brown.
Michael stopped in the doorway, pinned there by the look in Danse’s eyes. He wasn’t sure what to call the emotion he found there. Perhaps it was many at once. Sadness. Anger. Disbelief. Betrayal. They stared at each other, neither one sure what to say.
“It had to be done, Danse,” Michael murmured eventually, keeping Danse’s gaze despite his urge to look at the floor. The man deserved that much.
“Did it?” Danse asked, just as quietly, his thick brows pulling inward. “You killed...God, I don’t even know how many people, Michael.”
“There was no other way,” Michael argued gently. “Maxson was deaf to reason. The Brotherhood was pillaging the Commonwealth, endangering synths.”
Danse’s nostrils flared. “They were combating the Institute! What about your son?!”
Michael did his best not to react to the increased volume. Danse had a right to be angry. Devastated. His stomach flipped again, and he thought he might be sick. “There are other options for me.”
“What about for me?” Danse cried, his usually soft voice raw and hoarse. “The Brotherhood was everything to me, you knew that!”
“Maxson kicked you out!” Michael took a breath through his nose, calming down again. “They were never going to accept you, Danse. Please, just...trust me, when I say I had no other option.”
“How can I trust you?” Danse asked shakily, turning away from him. “Knowing you’re capable of something like...that?”
Michael swallowed the painful lump in his throat. “...that’s fair. I’m sorry, if it means anything.”
Danse’s jaw clenched and his lips turned white as they pressed together. “I think you should leave,” he muttered darkly, looking hard at the far wall.
“Don’t do this, love.”
“Do not call me that. Get out.”
Michael nodded slowly, hesitating as he prayed that Danse would call for him to come back. He didn’t, and so Michael took the elevator up to ground level once more, his vision a little blurry.

[Part 1] [Part 2] [Part 3 (n/a)]
Title: A Living Trophy AU Part: 1/3 Word Count: 990
Fandom: Skulduggery Pleasant Characters: Nefarian Serpine, Mevolent Pairing: Nefarian Serpine/Mevolent
Warnings: (Verbal) Abuse, Injury
Dark clouds hung heavy over the abandoned ruins of one of the fisher villages. Despite being one of the bigger mortal towns it was a mere mockery of the word 'proud'. And yet, it had been a good hide out, with a moderate amount of food supplies and far enough away from Dublin to be considered 'safe' as neither redhoods or sense wardens would wander this far out.
This town had been a good hiding place for the Resistance. That was until recently. It had been merely hours since Mevolent's troops had overrun the place. Mages and mortals alike had died left and right and their corpses were now littering the place, piling up between the skeletal remains of burned down buildings, reaching up to the sky as in a desperate attempt to escape the smell of blood, decay and burned flesh. Serpine could see flies resting on a nearby corpse. Yet the scurrying of not so distance rat feet what worried him more. As of now they were too scared to come near him, but his strength was fading with each moment his leg was dragged beneath that damn boulder, which had once been part of one of the towns bigger buildings. The town hall, he supposed. When enemy soldiers had still patrolled the area it had been easy to play dead, face down and barely breathing. Bloody and torn, wearing a ordinary black-brown garb they had mistaken him for just another fallen rebel. Other's had not been as smart as him. He had heard them whimper, scream and back, soon to be silenced with a blade through the throat or a boot coming down on their skulls.
That had been during noon, when the sun had hung heavy in the sky. Now she was sinking into the ocean, coloring the world crimson. Not that her help had been needed therefore. After the last heavy steps of soldier feet had faded into the soft cackling of silent, little flames Serpine had thought that surely soon his underlings, his comrades and fellow rebels must return; if not to look for him per see, to at least look for survivors of their own kin.
Hours have passed and not a single soul had come to his aid. His struggle, his kicking and pushing had long since ceased. Serpine had considered cutting his foot off to free himself only to come to the horrid realization that, with his sword lost during battle, there were no sharp objects he could use to free himself with. A glimmering blade in the hands of a fallen mage had been his only hope for freedom, but a cruel  fate, it remained just an inch out of his reach, no matter how much he stretched and clawed at the dirty ground.
Just as he had given up, with a bruised body and tired limps, he heard footsteps. A desperate will to survive flared up in him. He would not survive a night on the cold ground, not with the condition he was in, he knew that. With a blurred vision he could not see if the distant figure was friend or foe, but he had to take his chances, he had no choice.
"H-help!",Serpine called out, his voice broken and his throat dry. "Please... help m-me!", he cried out as loud as he could in his unfortunate state.
At first it seemed the figure hadn't heard him, but then it grew larger. And larger, and larger, and lar-... something wasn't right. Serpine's heart sunk in his chest as he realized just /who/ he had called to his aid.
He could no longer play dead, he had already drawn Mevolent's attention. Adrenalin rushing through his veins and cursing himself, he tried kicking the boulder off, ignoring the protest that shot in form of pain up his trapped leg. A desperate and vain action. He was going nowhere and they both knew that.
Mevolent's unhurried steps came to a stop right in front of Serpine, watching him struggle for a while before he finally spoke. "It looks like you could use a hand, /my darling/."
"Leave me alone...", his voice was a hoarse whisper as he pressed himself into the dirt; away, away from the taller.
"Don't be foolish. You'll die if I leave you now and we both know that. Your little rebel friends are not coming to save you. They don't care about you. No one does.", he crouched down, a large hand reaching out to stroke through dirty raven strains. Serpine tried to move his head away from the cruelly kind touch, but failed to escape. "No one but me. In fact, I do believe that quite a lot of people would gladly dance and spit on your grave."
Nefarian was silent. He knew the other's words to be true, but refused to grant him the satisfaction. After a while Mevolent let out a low chuckle, considering the silence a small victory. "Now stop being stubborn, I'm here to help you."
No, he wasn't. He was here to take him back and- ...A cold shiver ran down Serpine's back.
Suddenly he felt the weight being lifted off his foot. Carefully, he tried to move it, only to stop with a whimper as a sharp pain shoot up his leg.
"My my, that /certainly/ is broken." With those words he pressed two fingers on the swollen flesh, drawing a lovely hiss out of his treacherous little serpent.
Even now that he was freed of merciless boulder, Serpine remained unable to flee. There was no strength left him in to do so much as crawl, much less outrun his former master. Weak hands pushing the taller male away could not stop him from picking the battered, little figure up and hold him close in a gentle embrace.
"Let's go home, Nef." A kiss dropped on his brow was the last thing he felt before his mind slipped into darkness.

My little brother
Tumblr media
Author: Drade666
Rating: T
Warnings: Slight gore
Pairings: None
Fandom: Supernatural
Lucifer clawed at the soggy, mud-covered ground while rain smacked hard against bruised and cut flesh. Lucifer beat his wings to keep the rain from soaking them eventually getting to his feet with a hiss as pain throbbed through his side where 3 ribs sat broken causing the outer flesh to bruise a purplish-black color. The morning star bent down to pick up his silver blade that was partially covered in mud before limping across the field, panting while blood ran down the side of his face from a gash on his temple. Sorrowfully the archangel looked around the field of dead bodies of both angel’s as well as monsters that had escaped purgatory, the whole reason that the archangel’s had been sent to earth with the heavenly host. Lucifer could see his own breath coming out as small white clouds as he looked around at his fallen brothers and sisters he couldn’t help but feel anger well up inside him towards Michael who had ordered Raphael to return to heaven, leaving Lucifer alone with Gabriel…Gabriel, where was he?
“He-help…please!” Lucifer’s head snapped to the left towards the cry that sounded so familiar, taking off in the same direction.
“Gabriel!” Lucifer’s voice came out heavy with fear
“Lu-Lucifer…please…help me!” Gabriel cried as he looked up from where he lie, whiskey colored eyes pleading.
“I’m coming!” Lucifer called down to Gabriel in the ditch before jumping down, spreading his wings for balance as he slid down the steep slope to his little brother.
Gabriel was lying on his side with one arm folded under his body to hold him up while the other was pressed against the ground, straight up and down. Lucifer stopped dead in his tracks as he could now see Gabriel’s true condition, cuts littering his body including a gash above his eyebrow but his wings were badly damaged including the middle wing and the bottom wing on the left side that were trapped by a thin, steel wire clearly made by the same material as the archangel’s own blade. Gabriel was trying to get up but his other wings were broken along with one of his ankles that had begun to turn purple, his trapped wings were bleeding out, soaking the ground with his red fluid and clearly the wire had cut to the bone or perhaps beyond that.
“Gabriel, just stay calm…I’m going to get you out of here” Lucifer assured his little brother in a quiet tone as he sheathed his sword then knelt beside Gabriel.
“Ah! Lucifer, they hurt!” Gabriel cried out as Lucifer gently slid his arms under the younger archangel’s body.
“I know, I know, just relax…come on” Lucifer encouraged as he picked Gabriel up, ignoring his own pain even as his ribs throbbed. Lucifer looked to the skies that were still pouring down tears, spreading his gorgeous sunburst wings then taking off into the clouds where the boundary between heaven and the earth rests. Lucifer took Gabriel straight to the healing building, striding through the doors with the young archangel in his arms as several healing angel’s came running towards the wary survivors. Lucifer carried Gabriel into a treatment room where he placed him on a metal table watching as the angels began to swarm Gabriel, setting up immediate treatment for his wounds then he felt a hand on his shoulder.
“My lord…let us treat your injuries as well,” A young blonde angel requested
“No, I want to stay with him!” Lucifer insisted strongly
“Very well” The young angel sighed heavily
Lucifer walked up beside Gabriel while the angel’s worked on him one stopping for a moment upon witnessing his two bound wings. Lucifer furrowed his brow in heavy concern as he stood by Gabriel’s head gently carding his fingers through the younger archangel’s hair as his face twisted from pain and tears rolled down his cheeks to mingle with the blood from his wounds.
“Hush little brother…hush…they’re going to heal you” Lucifer assured Gabriel
 “Lucifer…Lucifer…my wings…I can’t feel them…I can’t…I can’t feel my wings!” Gabriel cried out in a panic
“Sshh, Sshh, it’s okay, it’s okay” Lucifer soothed although he wasn’t even convinced of it himself. Lucifer looked to the angel’s that were gingerly handling Gabriel’s wings and in the light it became painfully clear to Lucifer that there was only one course of action they could take…removing the lower halves of Gabriel’s two bound wings.
“My lord…we need to have you leave while we treat the rest of Lord Gabriel’s wound,” The young blonde stated after returning.
“NO! Please! Don’t leave, Lucifer!” Gabriel pleaded as he grabbed at Lucifer
“It’s okay Gabriel, it’s okay…” Lucifer knelt down in front of Gabriel to gently caress his cheek while placing a hand on Gabe’s forehead. Lucifer let his grace slowly slip into Gabriel causing his eyes to become lidded and heavy.
 “L-Lucifer…Please…” Gabriel whimpered
“Sleep now, my little brother” Lucifer whispered as he pushed a strand of hair out of Gabe’s face just as he fell asleep.
“Come with me my lord” The young blonde gently eased pulling him by the arm to guide the older archangel out of the room Gabriel was in and into another a little distance down the hallway. Lucifer managed to get onto the metal table giving a groan as his arm wrapped around his side letting his wings rest behind his back as the blonde came up to him.
“Lord Gabriel is in good hands my lord” The angel assured him with a kind smile
“I’m sure he is” Lucifer agreed returning her smile with a small one of his own before wincing again.
“I’m going to just pull your robes down now okay?” The angel spoke softly then gently reached up to slide Lucifer’s robes off his shoulders then rolling them down to his waist revealing the deep purple bruising that was stemming from the broken ribs below. The young angel gently started pressing around the bruised area in order to determine which of Lucifer’s ribs were broken. Lucifer let out a hiss through clenched teeth as the angel found all three then moved to assess the gash on his temple, pushing his hair out of the way to view the entirety of the injury but all Lucifer could think of was Gabriel. The young blonde angel continued to treat Lucifer’s injuries when Michael walked into the room surprising her to the point she jumped.
“Lord Michael! You surprised me sir,” The angel breathed trying to still her rapidly beating heart. The angel’s reaction causes Lucifer to spin his gaze in that direction immediately turning to anger as he caught sight of Michael standing in the doorway.
“Michael! You son of a bitch!” Lucifer barked jumping from the table then pinning Michael to the wall using his forearm to block the older archangel’s windpipe.
“My lord!” The young angel screeched as she covered her mouth in shock/horror
“You bastard! You left me and Gabriel down there to die!” Lucifer bellowed again
“Lucifer…stop…it…” Michael groaned as his breath got caught in his throat
“NO! Gabriel is on the verge of death because of you! Our father only knows if he’ll fly again if he survives!” Lucifer barked as his wings flared knocking over several trays filled with medical instruments.
“L-Lucifer…Lucifer…let…GO!” Michael managed to break Lucifer’s hold on him, shoving the younger archangel backwards. Lucifer made a move back towards Michael, raising his hands in an attack position until Michael grabbed his wrists.
“If he dies the blood is on your hands!” Lucifer gritted out
“I had to leave! Too many lives had been sacrificed already and I had no way of knowing if you two were going to make it out” Michael tried to explain
“But you didn’t even try!” Lucifer accused as tears welled up in his blue eyes
“I couldn’t take that chance” Michael lowered his tone
“We’re brothers!” Lucifer cried out as tears fell from his eyes now
“They were all our brothers and sisters…and I morn them all…as I will morn Gabriel’s death if it should come to pass” Michael explained in a calm, quiet tone
“You self righteous, unemotional, bastard!” Lucifer spat with tears streaming down his cheeks.
“I know that you and Gabriel share a different bond but you can’t allow that to cloud your judgment nor guide your emotions” Michael shot back
“Get out of here,” Lucifer ordered as he pulled from Michael’s grasp and turned his back on the older archangel.
 “Lucifer,” Michael called after him
“GET OUT!” Lucifer bellowed again turning around to face Michael who simply let out a heavy sigh then left the room. Lucifer limped back towards the table where he got back up gesturing with a nod of his head for the young angel to come continue her treatment of him.
“May I continue?” The young angel asked quietly
“Yes, my apologies…you shouldn’t have had to see that” Lucifer apologized in a soft, gentle tone.
“It’s alright, I should treat that gash on your leg now” The young angel stated
“Okay” Lucifer agreed with a small smile to her
“Alright, I’ll help you to swing your legs onto the table” The young angel offered already leaning down to grab Lucifer’s ankles then lift them up onto the table. Lucifer adjusted into a more comfortable position including shifting his wings so they laid flat under his back while the angel healer brought over a small tray of objects for treating his leg. Lucifer could feel her trace the small trickle of blood up his thigh, shifting his robes out of the way so she could see the gash that was located only a little from the top of his thigh and stretching across the entirety of his thigh. The blonde began to tend to the gash, cleaning it first then stitching it shut before gently bandaging it so she could move on to the rest of his wounds to finish treating them.
 Several hours later…
Lucifer limped his way into the recovery area of the healing building to locate the bed where he’d been told Gabriel was laying. Lucifer found it cordoned off in the corner for privacy while the young archangel healed, his injured wings held up on slings to prevent them from being damaged further or from swelling. Lucifer hated being right sometimes, especially now as he saw that the healers had to remove the lower portions of his wings that had been bound by the wire. Lucifer sat next to Gabe on the bed watching as his little brother breathed deeply yet weakly, his chest rising and falling gingerly with each breathe. Gabriel gave a soft moan that immediately drew Lucifer’s attention; he cupped Gabriel’s cheek tenderly as the younger archangel shifted his head from side to side.
“Gabriel? Take it easy okay,” Lucifer encouraged as he watched the archangel’s eyes flutter open.
 “Lu…cifer…?” Gabriel breathed out
“Sshh, it’s okay…I’m here, I’m here” Lucifer assured his brother
“Lucifer…my…my…wings…they’re…” Gabriel whimpered out between sobs that swiftly bubbled up from his chest while tears streamed down his face.
“Oh Gabe, Sshh, I know…I know little brother…I’m here…” Lucifer whispered as he leaned down to pull Gabriel into a hug. Gabriel wailed into Lucifer’s shoulder, as he held on weakly to the older archangel.
“It’s okay Gabe, we’ll get through this…we’ll get through this” Lucifer reassured Gabriel
Several months later Gabriel was released from the healing building but his wings were still in no condition for flight however luckily they were healing and expected to fully regenerate in time. Gabriel meanwhile went searching for Lucifer whom had been reassigned to duties around heaven until his injuries were fully healed and sure enough Gabriel found Lucifer running errands around heaven but he stopped instantly when he saw Gabriel coming towards him.
 “Gabriel?” Lucifer breathed out
“Lucifer! Hey!” Gabriel called out giving a wave to him
“Gabriel!” Lucifer called back then took off towards the younger, scooping him up in his arms when he got there.
“Easy big fella…I’m fine” Gabriel coaxed as he patted Lucifer on the back
“I was so afraid that you wouldn’t make it…” Lucifer trailed off with a shaky breath as he just held Gabriel close.
“Hey, Lucifer…I did make it, I’m fine…hmm” Gabriel was suddenly cut off from his thought as Lucifer’s lips pressed to his in a passionate kiss. Gabriel pressed back not caring if over half of heaven could see them cause all he wanted right now was Lucifer, his brother.
“My brother” Lucifer mumbled against Gabriel’s lips before continuing the kiss.
