dude i am having one of those nights that by all means could be one of the worst nights ever but... it’s actually been a blast.
so yesterday i flew back home after visiting a friend (actually, friends plural, it turns out) in Tucson. i timed my flight so that i would get back like a solid hour and a half before the last train, because delays happen and i wanted to make sure i would be able to catch the train home and not get stranded at the airport.
as luck would have it, my flight decided to get delayed by approximately an hour and forty minutes, A.K.A. just long enough for the last train to depart pretty much right as i was picking up my checked luggage. this left me with several options:
- take a series of night buses and get home in probably 3 hours, extremely exhausted and stressed out (i know it is stressful because i have done it before)
- call an uber/lyft and spend $50 gambling that i don’t get someone with one of those horrible air fresheneres that makes me feel sick. also would have to install the ride share app. basically a pain.
- just fuckin stay overnight at the airport and get on the first train in the morning
for reasons known only to my weird brain and the gods above, the third option was orders of magnitudes more appealing to me than the others.
so.... this brings us to now, at 3:45am, where i am going on 4 hours chilling at a pretty abandoned and very closed airport food court (save for the ~6 other people sleeping/chilling in booths around me who i suspect also missed the last train). I’m paranoid so I don’t want to sleep, even though honestly everyone else here is definitely in the same boat and I don’t think my stuff would get stolen. I mean I would guard the belongings of these random strangers with my life at this point. But it’s just good to be safe, yknow.
Instead, I have gone absolutely insane and just absolutely CRUSHED a SHITLOAD of code I’ve been meaning to do for my Amadeus game demo. I completely re-did the entire interactibles mechanic to make it more scale-able. I made the prologue scene completely playable with either point-and-click OR keyboard, including how the text progresses, which involved basically re-doing how text progression works. I made new code that helps handle special game events so I can do more things without cheating via Unity buttons. I have been GETTING SHIT DONE.
I don’t know *why* being exhausted and low on sleep and stuck in a random ass closed airport food court is making me so productive, but I’ve been on FIRE. I’ve been hosting a one-person hackathon over here. This is the most productive I’ve been since the global game jam ended. I am solving problems while delirious that I could not tackle while completely alert. Probably because I’m too tired to give a shit about maybe breaking something. Anyway, holy shit.
So anyway: this could have sucked. But instead it kind of ruled. It’s got sleepover energy up in here. The coffee shop nearby is finally going to open around 4 and that will give me the kick needed to make it the rest of the way until the trains start back up and I can get home and crash. #springbreakvibes

(Context)
Root yawns for what feels like the 100th time that day, but in all honesty, it could have very well been. Winter was not her forte, especially since she was part snake. She felt sluggish and tired all the time, wrapped up in a blanket and always by some source of heat.
Luckily, she'd been given permission to stay home from school once the effects of winter were obvious on her. It got worse when snow began falling, as she tended to bundle up inside of her room and not come out. She got some heating lamps and all that, but they did very little to help, if at all.
So now she sat on the couch, bundled in a large blanket, her head only visible. Her eyes were closed as she tries to focus on being warm. Keyword being tries.
She thinks some of the Admins were here, visiting to just check in. While the whole of the Wonder events had now been a while ago, there still were adverse effects. Root was pretty sure Vitality would've blown a blood vessel if she could when she arrived.
She cracks open an eye and turns her head a little. Over the couch, she sees the others and some of the Admins. Pure red catches her eye, and she perks up. Antivirus!
Then she stops, and her (very tired and sluggish) processor starts doing some math.
Code emits heat.
Heats sources tend to be big.
Antivirus is just big in general with his model.
Antivirus = heat source???
Promptly discarding her blanket, she hops off the couch and heads over, rubbing her eyes.
"OH, HELLO ROOT-" Antivirus cuts himself off from surprise as Root easily hoists herself up his arm and settles down on his shoulder.
With that, she promptly falls asleep.
It's quiet for several seconds.
"She just.. fell asleep on you." Domain chuckles softly.
"SHE DID." Antivirus nods.
"That's so cute!" Forum laughs softly. "It must be since she's a snake, and you're warm to her."
"DOES SHE NOT HAVE ANY OTHER HEAT SOURCES?" Antivirus asks, gently tugging Root's cloak so it covers her more.
"Nothing we've been able to make yet." Domain shakes his head. "Considering her.. origin, her code is probably wired to be used to scorching heat, so it naturally expects that all the time."
As Antivirus lets out a soft hum, there's the familiar excited gasp of Lily and the snap! of a phone's camera.
"How did you take out your phone so fast?" Lil Coding's voice came, incredulous.
"Yes!"
Antivirus chuckles softly and goes to gently lift Root off his shoulder, but finds that he.. can't. And he wasn't joking either, he legimately couldn't lift Root off his shoulder. It was like she was stuck to him.
For a moment, he was genuinely worried she was, until he remembered.
"Oh, Root sleeps like a rock during winter." Forum informed her when the Admin had inquiried about Root, who was on the couch. "Literally. She basically turns into a boulder. You can't move her at all."
"SHE'S NOT GETTING UP, IS SHE?" Antivirus blinks as he realizes.
"Probably not." Domain nods. "Are you alright with that? You'll probably be stuck here until she wakes up."
"I'M FINE WITH IT." The red Admin nods, tone genuine in a way that truly meant it.
Snapping his fingers, Forum smiles. "Oh, you know what, this is the perfect time. Domain and I can probably figure out what temperature is adequate for her and all that!"
Domain blinks, very confused. "But I thought we were-"
"Sh."
Antivirus decides not to question, knowing full well he wouldn't get an answer from the fellow Admins. Instead, his gaze lingers over to the couch, where Lily is waving him to come over. He does, and with a hearty tug, she gets him to sit by him.
The young girl promptly sits on his lap, somehow manages to drag the still sleeping Root off to join her on his lap, and relaxes.
"SHOULDN'T YOU BE IN SCHOOL?" He asks.
"Shouldn't you be at work?" She shoots back.
".. TOUCHÉ."
"But the real answer is that a paratrooper caught his wings on fire in the science lab, set off the sprinklers, the snow on the roof melted, and then flooded the school." Lily chirps.
Antivirus isn't even surprised. "SO A NORMAL WEDNESDAY."
"Pretty much!" The little hybrid grins.
With that, the Admin huffs out what's a small laugh for him, Lily merely grins brighter, and Root smiles in her sleep.
