I know this isn't the most popular opinion but I miss the days when anime would diverge from the source material often enough that I could assume the show might bring something new to the table. Id love to crack open into a manga or vn or something these days and feel like I wasn't spoiling the show that I am currently waiting to come out on a week by week basis. As someone who generally enjoys the animation side of things, I also feel like wanting to enjoy the show and staying spoiler free while getting to engage in a community in any way is harder to do now than it was when like, soul eater or FMA were initially releasing.
I understand wanting an adaptation to be concise and accurate, but it's become so much the norm there's a part of me that wonders what the point of watching these shows are unless you already enjoy the property involved, plan to start investing in the property past what's available in animation, avoid spoilers to the best of your ability, or just steel yourself and take the spoilers that are considered commonplace within the community.
And it's not like it's wrong to enjoy a property this way, but man. I miss waiting for a show to come out, miss when it wasn't just damning for the enjoyment of the thing.
#high quality anime adaptations always years behind too#good fans w good intentions posting mangacaps and common knowledge that has an anime release window of like#5 years from now#this IS about dungeon meshi and i HAVE been enjoying things#but i wont get any surprises outta the show anymore yknow?

thoughts on thistle and yaad's dynamic that i vomited in the tags of another post but will now try to articulate here: they're not actually family, or at least they shouldn't be. not in a conventional sense anyway. framing them as uncle and nephew (even in a non-literal, silly fantasy world way) rides more on technicality than anything concrete.
what i mean by this is yaad calls thistle by name and says he and delgal were raised "like" brothers. he talks about thistle like he's an outsider imposing himself into the melinis' space, and it's clear that thistle was never legitimized as a member of the family. for thistle's part, though we don't know how he would treat yaad pre-demon brainrot, it's safe to assume based on the way he punishes him—turning him into a doll—and how little is shown in the way of any sort of relationship between them that thistle only cares* about yaad as an extension of delgal (otherwise i'd expect something like kabru and milsiril, because it's not like another complicated interspecies family dynamic would be out of place, yet there's next to nothing on them even in bonus content, just their scant interactions in the main story).
in essence, they're strangers to one another. thistle's desperation to preserve the illusion of a family, a model where he doesn't even fit, was the snare they were caught in for the past thousand years of stasis. yaad-as-nephew is a prop to uphold that illusion, and thistle is playing a role he's unfit to play. in the context of post-canon interactions, attempting to reconstruct that facade would only be a reenactment of trauma for them both (in a deeply compelling way i'd love to watch unfold, tbh), as that "uncle and nephew" framing places thistle in an implicit position of power over someone he's already traumatized through misuse of authority in the past, a role which also perpetuates his adultification and yaad's infantilization in turn. it'd mostly be an obstacle to any real connection.
best to burn the melini family bridge, i think, and if there's still anything salvageable left in the rubble, let something different supplant it.
#not to say i don't enjoy when they're portrayed as a weird set of uncle and nephew - that's really fun too#i think their history and shared connection to delgal would be a key element to their dynamic no matter what#and it's something they would tryyyy to make work at some point. for lack of other options.#it's not smn i take too seriously either! but thinking about it for more than 2 minutes makes me go oh yikes#i do think they could be family - i'm a certified sucker and sap so i want them to be - but#growth means moving past that more conventional way of thinking of family#side note as someone with a large extended family i DO have uncles who are younger than me lmao#but i'm viewing the whole uncle + nephew thing with thistle and yaad more symbolically for the purposes of this#additional note the fantasy age-fuckery and power dynamics at play means thistle has been in an actual position of authority#over his younger family members like any older relative would be in spite of his being quite young and immature#so. no. don't try to be his uncle anymore. and he isn't your nephew. and oh god he isn't your dead brother let it go. stop with the labels#don't try to resurrect that corpse (< writing them trying to resurrect that corpse as we speak)#not sure if these tags are coherent pero basta lang. yaad and thistle stay complicated forever that's all i want#feel free to chime in or disagree as i'd like to crack into this like crispy lechon and my opinions are subject to change#roomba media#thistle#yaad#thistle & yaad#melinis#dm#dunmeshiposting#dunmeshi spoilers#thistle dungeon meshi#dungeon meshi#edit: changed some inaccurate wording in this one whew. english

i just finished reading dungeon meshi and would like to state:
if you have been under the impression up to this point that dungeon meshi is a low stakes found family slice of life about quirky fantasy friends talking about food (like i did before i read it), i'd like to tell you that it is not that. those moments of found family enjoying a meal are surrounded by a harrowing and grim journey through a terrifying labyrinth designed to kill them, and throughout the 97 chapters comprising it from start to end, I cannot think of a single page that didn't contain vital story information that mattered.
it is an expertly and lovingly crafted odyssey with fantasy world building so thorough with consistent logic that the properties of the magic in their world fell extremely comfortably into the part of my brain that understands things like gravity and light particles. it's really good shit.

the longer i look at this panel the more deranged i feel about it. this is environmental storytelling at its finest.
the eodio stand-in doll in particular makes me crazy. where did it come from? did thistle just pop into the village like "hey ungrateful wretches, one of you needs to make me a life-sized mannequin, For Reasons". did he make it himself? seems quite unlikely, yet the possibility haunts me. i mean, i guess there could've been one just lying around the dungeon somewhere. it's the act of replacement itself that really gets to me. (edit: it's been pointed out to me that the eodio doll also could have been left behind as part of delgal's escape plan. slightly different kind of madness but tbh, just as funny-sad to me if that happened and thistle went Ok, Guess That's Eodio Now.)
both the wives are there too. we know very little about them, which makes me tend to assume thistle wasn't all that close to them, but they're still included. when did they end up here? did he kick their souls out of their bodies at some point, or were they among those who left their bodies voluntarily to try and escape? when did yaad become an effective orphan, delgal an effective widower? women in the margins of the narrative, tell me your stories!
and the fact that they're surrounded with the living paintings, which thistle habitually wanders through to relive the past. this truly is his inner sanctum, his place of utmost comfort... and it may as well be a tomb.
that panel is so creepy when you first see it. just a sense of "ohh jeez, there's a lot to unpack there".
and actually, yeah, it remains creepy from pretty much any angle, but the more you think about it the more it's also tragic.
this is where many of thistle's happiest moments took place. everything he had in that picture is now gone. first he lost their warm regard, then one-by-one their bodies became hollow shells. before the end, none of the people here needed or enjoyed food anymore. the dinner table, as a center of both family life and nutrition, became obsolete.
a line from someone else's excellent post about thistle has stuck in my head ever since i read it: "to eat is to live, but to eat together is to be loved". to me, this is the sentiment and symbolism at the core of everything that happens in dungeon meshi.
it makes this bit all the sadder and more disturbing.
there's several things to note here:
thistle has gone from seated and eating with them as part of the family, to a lonely and ominous figure hovering over delgal's shoulder
eodio is conspicuously absent from view, and his body would have been a husk by now, but yaad says parents, which forces me to assume that they are sitting at the table with eodio's soulless body, hidden under yaad's speech bubble
they're not actually eating anything.
those plates are empty. you could assume that they've already finished eating, maybe, but yaad refers to it as sitting around the dinner table. in fact, he compares it to what he's currently doing; sitting at the dinner table watching the touden party eat, not eating anything himself.
it paints a pretty grim picture. for some time even after the fantasy had fallen apart, even after there was no need or desire to eat, they kept gathering around the dinner table. at that point, i'd guess only so as not to provoke thistle's wrath.
but even that last happened a long, long time ago.
this is a callback to what senshi said in the golden kingdom: the reason the people keep maintaining their fields and silverware and so forth is that they need to do so in order to stay sane.
paradoxically, the dinner table is the most striking evidence of thistle's insanity, and at the same time, it's the only anchor to sanity he has left.
he kept enforcing the ritual of dinner together long after it lost significance. when even that was impossible- because almost everyone's souls were gone- he kept their bodies at the table anyway. it's fine. it's fine! he's protected them, physically, just like he set out to. they're all still breathing. at a glance it looks like they could wake up and resume dinner at any moment. like this, it's easy to pretend.
isn't that what being a dungeon lord is, at the core of it? rejecting reality, staying in the prison of one's impossible desires. it's just one long game of pretend.
thistle did all this to protect his loved ones. no matter how obsessive and twisted he became in pursuit of that over the years, his core motivation never changed. this is all he has left of that dream: his loved ones' bodies gathered around the locus of their happiest memories together. like this, he can tell himself he's succeeded.
when eodio's body vanished with delgal's soul in it- when he couldn't even have that anymore... well.
i want to reach through the screen and shake him. no, they're not, thistle. THISTLE, NO, THEY'RE NOT! the doll of eodio is the closest thing to him in this panel, underlining the point. when that final illusion was shattered, he became completely unable to cope with reality.
therefore casually forgetting the creepy eodio doll isn't real.
thistle isn't stupid. eodio's body vanished at the same time as delgal's soul. shortly after, more adventurers came pouring in than ever before. deep down, he knows what happened. if he didn't, being confronted with the truth by mithrun wouldn't have made him panic so hard he summoned chimera falin to the first floor.
yet still...
he absolutely can't admit that to himself. he is clinging to the last scraps of the illusion with everything he has.
this is a dungeon lord at the end of desire. this is a lotus-eater machine left running long after its conclusion. this is mithrun lying listlessly in his bed, his replica lover having given up any pretense of being human. the illusion is all that's left. (an illusion is all it ever was.) thistle and the citizens of the golden kingdom- they're ghosts just as much as the ones who wander the dungeon floors. and if it weren't for thistle sealing the lion away, he would've been eaten by it long ago.
all of this encapsulated by that single panel of the dinner table.
#dungeon meshi#dungeon meshi spoilers#thistle#delgal#yaad#eodio#meta#long post#aphelion.txt#dunmeshi#sorry. i am so incredibly not normal about any of it#to the people in the tags/replies who pointed out the table is essentially another living picture for thistle: YES#i had that thought too#couldn't figure out how to slip it into the post lol

Dungeon Meshi Final Chapter
This is it. This is what the series is about. The joy of sharing meals with those you love.

The title image has several dishes that were made throughout the series. Here's what I identified:
Huge Scorpion and Walking Mushroom Hotpot (Chapter 1)
Man-Eating Plant Tart (Chapter 2)
Mandrake and Basilisk Omelet (Chapter 4)
Living Armor Soup (Chapter 7) and /or Hippogriff Soup (Chapter 49)
Grilled Living Armor (Chapter 7), Boiled Mimic (Chapter 13), and Steamed Nightmares (Chapter 42)
Coin Bug Crackers (Chapter 10)
Prayer to Ward Off Evil! Exorcism Sorbet (Chapter 11)
Golden Wheat Bread (Chapter 12)
Giant Parasite From a Giant Squid (Chapter 16)
Tentacle Gnocchi (Chapter 21)
Sauerkraut-Style Dryad Buds (Chapter 34)
Barometz Balut (Chapter 44)
Sausage and Pancakes from the Breakfast Senshi Made (Chapter 47)
Boiled Hippogriff Potstickers (Chapter 50)
Hamburg Steak with Changeling Sauce (Chapter 55)
Unnamed Egg Dish Kabru Served Mithrun (Chapter 62)
Golden Country Dragon Wing (Chapter 72)
Pie That Marcille Wanted (Chapter 85)
Izutsumi has a bowl with a mushroom in it. She hasn't eaten it yet, but she might be trying to eat things she doesn't like.
I'll bet it was Kabru's idea to invite people from all around. The Town Crier's words sound like the kind of propaganda Kabru would create.
Flamela and her aide become very talkative when drunk. Those orcs may have learned ancient secrets that Kabru and Marcille have been trying to uncover their whole lives.
The demon wanted to make a blissful meal that lasts for eternity. Laios put on a grand feast and everyone in attendance was sick of eating after just seven days. More proof that the demon's plan was doomed to fail.
Fleki has eaten so much that she's got a balloon belly.
Twin braids is probably the most elaborate hairstyle Chilchuck can do. At least Marcille's braids have matching clips.
Could this be the curse?!?
Izutsumi has to always be edgelord cool person.
Huh. I would have thought Laios would have already told everyone about the lion's curse by now. But they all agree that there's no way the lion's curse has anything to do with Falin.
Not entirely sure why Marcille is afraid of hurting Laios by telling him the curse likely doesn't have to do with Falin. I guess he just already has enough to worry about. The last thing he needs is to worry about being able to resurrect Falin AND there's some other goal he is cosmically denied.
This series has a lot of themes surrounding eating as a form of social bonding and happiness. And this final chapter is explaining how it's not possible to enjoy a meal together forever because death is an inevitability.
And in addition, another theme of this series is the connection to what we eat. We eat to live, but something has to die to do that, and we shouldn't take life for granted.
But also, this is a comedy manga about a bunch of goofballs eating weird monsters. You're free to find deeper meaning to anything, but you don't need to ascribe meaning to everything.
I wonder if Izutsumi and Lycion have a similar scenario in their souls. Their human souls pin down the beast souls in them so they are the dominant being.
The moment her legs were restored.
She had the chance to discard the dragon entirely, but she chose to bring it with her.
The demon is a form and personality mana took to better understand humans and other living things. When it first came to the world, it responded to the millions of creatures wanting to eat. It understood that eating doesn't satisfy forever, and whatever gets eaten becomes part of the world.
The demon decided to join in on eating and being eaten because it wanted to know why everything participated in this. But it came to the wrong conclusion that eating was something done only for temporary pleasure. It thought the eternal happiness the ancients wished for was simply infinite food and eternally full bellies. And it couldn't understand why they wished for their destruction even though they had that.
The demon was okay with being eaten because it was infinite. No matter how much of it was consumed, it never lost anything. But Laios ate its desires and that core bit that defined the demon's self was lost. It's appetite became part of Laios and the demon has since realized that eating is more than just a pleasurable activity. It's also how we obtain the nutrients we need to stay alive and maintain our bodies. We don't just eat food and then poop it out. What we eat becomes part of us.

Laios kept a brooch of the winged lion as part of his royal garments because he believes the winged lion genuinely wanted to make people happy. He wished for the lion to not be forgotten and keep watching over the world. And the lion has chosen to fulfill that wish.
At its core, the demon may have actually desired to be part of the world. While its infinite self makes it impossible to truly exist within the finite world, it has found a role it is satisfied to have. It has stopped being a living creature and is now a force that living beings can use and helps their existence.
Falin's dress was fine until this moment. The threads look like blood vessels.
Pattadol probably styled Marcille's hair here. Unlike Marcille, Pattadol had only one way she decorated her hair and it's pretty similar to this.
Happy reunions all around. Falin's a little better at remembering people than Laios, but she only remembers Senshi as that guy who cooked them a meal.
Since when?
Pattadol is trying to look proper and not nosy at all, but her fairy was trying to listen in on everything as well.
Shuro can't bear to look at Falin right now.
The orcs like to gift vegetable crops. Maybe that adds to why they like Senshi so much.
Of course, they might also be trying to cozy up to King Laios by giving his sister gifts.
Not the most exciting final meal the series could have had.
She's got little dragon fangs too.
And it makes one last joke at Laios's expense. Despite achieving everything most people could ever desire, it meant nothing to him because he couldn't be around monsters anymore.
And one of the themes of this series is accepting that you can't have everything you want but you can still find joy in what you have. Laios may not be able to make a kingdom of monsters, but he can still make a kingdom where all races can live together, share meals, and eat what they like with the people they like.

G'day, I hope you are doing well.
Ever since I finished the story of Dungeon Meshi (all supplementary material included) I've been writing down bullet points on characters in addition to in-depth synopses as a way to tidy up my rather busy mind. To this end I've also greatly enjoyed reading other folks' interpretations of particular characters, as it gives me further insight into aspects of that character I may have glossed over.
However, there's one character I'm struggling to write a cohesive synopsis about, that being none other than 'miss enigma' herself, Falin Touden. I get that her whole shtick is that she's kind of a mystery, but I find myself drawing a lot of blanks when it comes to her as a character, and while I have nailed down some important bullet points, there are a lot of different interpretations on her, all of which starkly contrast one another. Though perhaps it's just the wording. Hard to say.
It could very well be that I'm being too dense i.e. perceiving "Falin is willing to risk killing others to save her friends." and "Falin, in the heat of the moment, when faced with certain death, was willing to face the prospect of harming potential passersby in a final Hail Mary to get her friends to safety." as entirely different observations. I have a hard time with those kinds of things.
With this being a hub for all sorts of observations, interpretations and cool trivia, I was wondering if you'd perhaps be willing to share how you yourself perceive Falin as a character, so I can compare notes and perhaps gain a more proper understanding of her as a character as a result. I know this question is very broad and kind of vague, but if you could spare the time I'd be most grateful.
Other than that, I wish you an excellent day.
Hello!!! I love Falin!!!!!
She *is* a mystery, we mostly know Falin through the perception other characters have of her instead of a direct deep look onto who she is, which I find very interesting. I think the best post I've seen about her (which as usual I can't remember where edit: someone linked it thank uu) I think called her perceived altruism/love "selfish" and I've been thinking about that ever since.
In that sense the way she cares so much about the comfort of people around her might be a way to keep *her own* comfort because she doesn't want to see other people suffer.
This girly died and came back to life from bones and the first thoughts she has is that she caused trouble for her loved ones
She probably has felt this way since she was a child, "because of her" that her family was torn apart "because of her" that Laios left, her mom was sick, her father had to send her away. (wasn't actually her fault but she might think it is)
I imagine ever since then Falin has done her best to not cause trouble and to make the people she loves happy, everything we know about her and the things she was doing was always for the people she loved, that's why I enjoy the post canon comic where Toshiro asks her hand in marriage again so much. The first time she considers accepting just because "might as well" while for the second time she finally wants to live for herself.
I think Falin herself has lost who she "really is" by trying to accommodate everyone around her and that's probably part of why we ourselves don't really know her, so much so that the most cynical character is uncomfortable around her (probably cause he notices Falin is "hiding" something)
I think Falin is quite the melancholic character to be honest, someone who has lost herself in self sacrifice and who is only now learning how to live for herself doing what she wants.
Both the teleportation scene and the bit about healing show "cracks" in the selfless front she puts out tbh. By context I don't think what she did was only due to "desperation of the moment" she says out loud "Even if I end up hurting others I want you and my brother to live on". She weighted out how much suffering she might cause and decided she wanted to save them anyway, and I'm sure in that calculation she knew that they would suffer because of her sacrifice too.
Falin is saving them for herself, I'm not great with words so this is all over the place and maybe sounds a little negative about Falin but the thing is, you cannot live your life for other people, you can't sacrifice yourself for other people's happiness, you shouldn't erase your own presence so others are happier and I think Falin is starting to learn that by the end.
I'd probably keep rambling without getting anywhere and missing a lot of more meaningful moments but I'll stop here, if anyone has recs for Falin analysis please share!
#Dungeon Meshi spoilers#I think the way Toshiro speaks about the moment he fell in love with Falin to be telling too#He had to see her in the dead of the night finally just doing her thing instead of putting on what others expect of her#to finally notice how wonderful she is#But Falin cannot reciprocate those feelings because as opposed to Laios#She is putting up a front to these other people so she can't engage with them in a meaningful manner#Nobody (besides Laios and Marcille) got past the wall Falin put up so they couldn't reach her#I think in the conversation she has with Toshiro in that extra she's finally letting him thru that wall#instead of avoiding it like she did before#she caused discomfort by saying what she really feels and that's okay#Anyway#dunmeshi thoughts#ask#Falin Touden

The fact ive been seeing people in the dungeon meshi fandom not understanding the life cycles and how that impacts ages of maturity among the various races, and using that as a means to attack or insult other fans is quiet disheartening.
Because they have been shown in the anime recently ive seen this alot with characters such as inutade and leed and more so when izutsumi appears. i cant be to upset because as much as i enjoy kui and her work, alot of major facts arnt in the story itself and are in the daydream hours and seperate content.
But people arnt realizing that the different races arnt like the real world, they dont grow at the same age and rate and have different life spans because of it and so people are getting aggressive towards others over character ages when in reality they dont know how it really is.

Leed is one i want to talk about, orcs only live around 55 years. And they clearly grow at a much faster rate than races such as elves or gnomes. Leed is 14 years old, but at that point she is a fully grown orc woman. Yes she has only just become one but in orc society she is an adult, we see this when she thinks she is going to be wed off to laios later in the story when he becomes king. If she wasnt fully grown then i do not believe kui would have shown that scene. But because of orc aging she is in fact a grown woman.

My other example being inutade, once more we see another race with a shorter lifespan who clearly age at a faster rate than elves or gnomes. Inutade being 16 actually puts her past what oni age of maturity is because they mature at 15. Tade is a fully grown oni woman. And if we look at daydream hour 88 we see this art of her. Whether you view it in a sexual light or not is up to interpretation and it could go either way. But because of the type of person kui is, i dont believe she would have drawn tade like this if she viewed her as underage.

I have more photos of the race bios to show them off but what im saying is that there needs to be an understanding that because these fantasy races have varrying life spans, the ones who live shorter lives would make sense to mature in less time than the other ones. I want people to understand this because ive been seeing people saying truly despicable and mean things about other people and it breaks my heart to see.
Ive seen some people say that maturity ages are what they are becaus the shorter lived races die becaues it is like medieval times and so people died younger, but with magic healers and spells that really isnt something i think can be pointed to for why certain ages die at certain times.
#dungeon meshi#inutade#tade#leed#mod post#i hope people are understanding what i mean#suggestive#just in case

aye this might not even get much traction but i did promise to write this a long time ago, so whoever is interested, i hope you enjoy and thanks in advance for reading!
the reference that launched me into overdrive to write this (like i took a shot of crack and heroine at the same time)

Laios' party made a quick stop by a shop on a lower floor of the dungeon--they were in desperate need of food and supplies. Thankfully it wasn't as packed as the ones on the upper floors, but the prices were a tad more expensive. And most of the vendors were...monsters. Or some variation of one.
"You're ten coins short," you said, quite flatly too. It was all too often that people would come through with not enough currency in their pockets to get by via these shops. Funnily enough, you couldn't help but take notice to the armored Tallman that was a bit unfazed by your statue. Most that come to and fro from whatever land shake in their boots, sometimes walking away without buying the things they need to continue. You even had to get a shorter stool at your kiosk so customers wouldn't faint or run off.
You were a tall female Beastman--well, taking the form of one--and your bangs covered your eyes. Clad in slightly revealing attire, but to most this was considered normal.
You could overhear the shorter blonde elf asking the rest what they can do since they really needed those supplies. The Tallman walked back over to you, some pep in his step and a genuine smile on his face. He really looked like a sweetheart. He looked like one of those kinds that took interest in monsters, and you've seen it all before. He might try to distract you, ask you questions about your species or life while the others attempt to steal the items and-
"Is there perhaps another way to pay?" he said, "We really need these supplies and I've gotta know my options...Please?"
In his mind, he was taking a shot in the dark. Being unable to read your facial expressions, especially unable to read your eyes was killing him. But he at least had to try.
You were pleasantly surprised. Not many customers pressed on this far. Not one was successful. Standing up, now being a generous four inches taller than him, you watched his jaw drop slightly. But not in a "I fucked up" way. No...He was practically drooling.
How can a monster be so...beautiful?! From your rigid horns to the patterns on your skin, and your rich voice that rattled around his brain, let's just say it's a good thing Laios would never eat a beastman. He could die happy just at the sight.
"This way," you said while gesturing to the hall that led to a spot closer to your habitat. Laios nearly broke into a sweat as his cheeks turned a deep red, clearing his throat and turning to reassure his party.
"I will be right back guys. Don't worry about me, I'll handle it."
Did he believe that? Maybe? I mean, surely if he had to fight for his life he'd have a better chance of winning if he wasn't walking behind you and taking in your figure. The confident sway of your hips. The silhouette of your thick thighs through your skirt...Woah! What is he thinking? Is it hot in here? Or rather, out here?
At the end of the hall, it was foresty and damp place that honestly looked enchanted. Like an untouched land filled with nothing but dreams. Though, that was the entire point. What use would this place be if you couldn't eventually carry out an...alternative transaction here? It's only been three months since the walls shifted and allowed your escape to this part of the dungeon. Make the most of it.
And make the most of it you will.
Once further in, the environment became more misty. The vines surrounding most of the area released some opaque vapor into the air, causing Laios to feel funny. His vision became wonky and he couldn't stop giggling to himself.
"Something funny?" you said stopping in front of him with your back turned. Your...really nice back. He couldn't help himself. He kept imagining what you looked like naked, but in his defense it's what happens when he's nervous! You know, like what you looked like without that piece of cloth just barely holding up your breasts. Just what you looked like hovering over him with not an article of anything on except for those pretty shiny beads around your waist...
Damn it.
He blushed hard and leaned on a nearby tree to compose himself before attempting an answer. If he spoke now, he didn't know what sound would come out his mouth.
The second he looked up in your direction you turned around and looked him dead in the eyes with your bangs out of the way. His pupils grew and the shine in his eyes was gone.
"Traveler?" you said in a feigned innocent tone. Laios blinked a few times and groaned, holding his head. His ears were ringing and he was sweating just standing there dazed as ever. His pants were getting tighter. He could barely look at you or register anything going on as your voice echoed in his head.

The weight of his limbs felt like bricks. But his legs only felt like that because you were sitting in his lap, and right atop his crotch.
"I have a challenge for you," you whispered in his ear, shifting your weight forward to wake him up more. He inhaled sharply as his eyes widened. He so badly wanted to touch you. Grab your hips. You shoulders. Anything! He could only just look at up you with hazy eyes and nod slowly.
"I accept," he muttered. His words may have been a bit slurred but he was well aware of the situation. He had to get supplies for his party, and if this was the only way, then shit, so be it! He was the last man to complain.
You smiled at him and sat up to push his pants further down his legs, softly gripping his shaft and hovering over it.
"All you have to do is ejaculate," you said. "I'm going to ride you until you do so. Clear?"
You could feel him twitch in your hand in response. So, with that, you sat right in his lap with zero preparation or warning. You had the ability to shape shift, so this kind of thing was never a bother. Although he was beneath you and locked up as soon as he registered your warmth around him. It was like a wet heating pad.
What you chose to omit was once inside of you, his system would slow down. The point was for it to be difficult, just take longer for him to cum. Also for him to not be able to speed up the process with whatever strength he may have. Not a soul has been able to do this without tapping out because even though it's taking longer, the sensitivity is still there. Stronger than ever before.
The hands that were lying helplessly at his side were generously placed on the fabric that covered your ass while you rode him. It was a normal pace but to him it was excruciatingly slow, but that didn't stop that goofy lazy smile from forming on his lips.
Every thought of his walking down that hall came true--which wasn't too many. You holding his head up let him just sit there with your tits bouncing in his face. This was not helping in the slightest. Oh the things he could say. The things he could do! Which was really...not a damn thing.
"Three minutes. Impressive." you said. Three minutes passed already?!
"I'm so sad..." he mumbled, more like whined.
"Why's that?"
You could feel his fingers wiggling, trying to gain some kind of control again. "Your breasts...so nice..." he huffed and a single tear fell down his face. You could almost laugh.
Wiping his tear with your thumb, you leaned forward to stuff his face in your cleavage, and you just couldn't help but chuckle at his groan of relief; your arms wrapped around his neck for balance. His tight muscles easing just a bit even as you rode faster, this time for your own pleasure. You could feel his hands gripping and kneading at the skin between his fingers. The pace his hands moved was oddly faster than before, but you were too caught up in your own world to care.
He was one of few that was decently sized when erect, which was the most exciting part. Each up and down slide better than the last, if that made any sense. To you it does, be as it may, you don't get this opportunity often.
He groaned again as he finally got the growing feeling in the pit of his stomach, his muscles a little less tense than before. Laios had to keep reminding himself why he was here. Why he agreed to this besides getting a nut off with a scheming, gorgeously thick monster that was taller than him. Whatever hit him, whatever newfound purpose reached up and slapped some sense into him moved his arms up to hug your waist, but not enough to trap you against him. Not yet anyway.
You were still coming undone. Your eyes to the sky and moaning to your heart’s content. It was now you who forgot what the purpose of all this was. Ten measly coins? What an excuse…or a lie.
But there was no time to think about it as your hips suddenly slammed into his lap and were unable to move. You panted in irritation as you looked down at him, feeling him trap you against his chest as he mustered every bit of strength to roll over so you were on your back. He hovered over you and caught his own breath, his arms shaking as he held himself up for a moment. You looked at him in pure shock. Of the few individuals that went through this “trial” of yours, it was just the typical process of you using them. However, now, as you watch him sit up straight and press your thighs to your chest, flushed cheeks and all, you couldn't tell if you should be upset, or thrilled.
If you were annoyed before, then it completely vanished the second his hips connected with the back of your thighs. A guttural, yet pleasurable shriek leaving your lips and echoing throughout the damp, dreamy forest. Your bright colored eyes wide and your fangs bore in its wake. Laios was determined to make this worth it and just move the hell on. It must've been the angle—it was—because now the heavy, dead feeling in his limbs was free, and he thrusted like he had nothing to lose yet all to gain, which was true.
You, on the other hand, were having the time of your life. It's like the rush one gets when having a worthy opponent. The intensity running through your veins caused your form to change mid thrust, and you were focused on nothing else but the both of you reaching climax. You were already close to it, and especially Laois now that he just watched you shift like that because of him. He cursed under his breath and thrusted harder.
“You're…you are gorgeous,” he said breathlessly, his eyes taking in a totally different version of you. He groaned loudly once your tail wrapped around his neck. “In every form,” he added in a strained whisper.
He finally snapped. That sticky, warm substance filling the caverns of your core was almost never ending. You bucked and shook under him, shifting a few more times as your orgasm hit you like a weighted blanket in the cold. His hips finally stilled and he panted like a dog, shakily removing himself and watching his cum leak onto your now bigger tail from the new shift. You let out a sigh as your body relaxed, letting your legs thump against the ground.
“Traveler,” you said with a breathy laugh and looked at him while sitting up. “Take whatever you need.”
He helped you stand, silently marveling at the feeling of your hand in his since this shift gave you claws. Oh, how he wishes he could stay guess what you turned into post-Beastman form, but he had duties and a party to lead. He watched as his own cum evaporated from the ground, so he could only imagine at this point what it looked like after coating those walls of yours, like something he'd never felt before. You gave him a kiss on the cheek and stood upright, seeing the blush form quickly on his cheeks.
“It’s on the house.”

You were out for a walk, now that Thistle had left to take care of business, you had snuck off to the grass fields. The blades of grass were squished underneath the soles of your feet with every step you took, your flowy clothes swishing with the gentle wind that always graced the land of the Melini family. You stared at the stretch of the horizon with unblinking eyes as your back faced the dirt road that separated the fields, you sifted through all the events that had happened when you returned to the golden kingdom.
Everyone welcomed you with open arms, especially Yaad. They gave you a place to call home after the many cold nights you spent locked away in the secluded corners of the dungeon. Your reminiscing was interrupted by the sound of wheels on the dirt road, it sounded distant even though you weren’t close to the road but not far away.
You looked to your right, spotting a cart with a unicorn pulling it with multiple people on it and around it. Although you only recognized one and the others… you had no clue. While you were staring at the outsiders, the tall man who was walking beside the cart had made eye contact with you. His eyes widened and his brows shot up, a bewildered expression on his face. Even though on the outside you blankly stared back at him, on the inside you were panicking. Thistle had told you not to trust outsiders and these were outsiders that were blatantly heading towards the village.
The more the blonde stared at you the more nervous you got, just as he was about to call out to you, the wings that rested behind your ears and head unfurled and covered your face. When the tall man blinked, you were gone.
Meanwhile, you landed in a clearing in the forest close to the castle, your face flushed in embarrassment. “That was close…” you mumbled, rubbing your warm cheek to get rid of the feeling. You got up and walked back in the direction of the castle, all while looking out for the outsiders, even though there was no way they could have gotten to the village before you. Once you got to the castle you ran to Yaad’s room and raised your fist as you rapidly knocked on the door. “Yaaaad!” You called out shifting your weight from one foot to the other.
The door opened to reveal a grey-haired boy, his face showing mild concern. “(Name)? Are you okay?” he asked, tilting his head. You inhaled deeply. “There are some outsiders and I don't know what to do because Thistle isn't here, so I came to find you!” you spoke rapidly, your face burning hot. You gasped, drawing in the sweet air.
Yaad’s expression shifted from concern to shock. "Wait, really?!" he exclaimed, his eyes wide with eagerness. “Yes!” you nodded in response.
Just then, a villager came running to Yaad, repeating the same alarming news you had just shared. This confirmation struck you: they were really here! Remembering your earlier blunder, a wave of humiliation washed over you, causing the wings on your back to tense up.
Quietly, you slipped away while Yaad was talking to the villager and ran to your room. You covered yourself with your sheets and stared at the ceiling, trying to gather your thoughts.
You may have been staring for too long, because the next thing you knew, it was night, and you were waking up from a long nap. You sat up, feeling groggy with messy hair. Swinging your feet over the bed, they touched the cold floor, and a shiver crawled up your spine. You couldn't go back to sleep, and your throat was dry, so you decided to get a glass of water.
As you walked toward the kitchen, you passed by an open guest room door. The warm light from the lit candle inside illuminated the lower part of your body, drawing attention to your wings. However, the darkness of the night left your face unrecognizable.
The people in the room noticed that you were standing in the doorway and a blonde-haired elf jumped while letting out a squeak, clutching her sheets in her fist. Your eyes scanned the room, 'a small guy and a dwarf? And a kitty…' you thought, your child brain not comprehending the concept of different races other than elves and tall men.
The tall man gasped and shot out a hand to point at you. "Y-you're!" He stumbled over his words, leaving you confused as you tilted your head, your dull eyes seemingly judging him. "You're the angel!" He finally got out, his face still stunned.
"mhm," You hummed and stepped closer. "I'm (Name), The Damselette of Melini" You smiled as your eyes curled unnaturally.

Dungeon Meshi Quick Reacts: CH36
Time find out just how fucked up Toshiro got.
Hey Kabru. Chill.
That sure is a normal look to give your team mate. I'm sure you're a normal, well adjusted leader who understands when you step out of bounds.
Bold of you to assume they even care. They're too caught up in the plot of the second arc to even remember you...
So much to question here. The fact that Toshiro has retainers. The fact that they're all mildly bored. The fact that Marcille seems to hate it here. Marcille, hello??? Are you only interested in Falin? Do you just hate people that aren't her?
The fact that she's still wearing the frog costume makes this panel, honestly. What a legend.
This is so wholesome. Laios just decided to therapy this workaholic man all on his own, dangit. If he won't do it, who will? Senshi must be so proud.
Hang on, I just realized--.....is that.
Is that the cat girl...?!!? That I've been seeing? I thought it was just a hat at first, but those are ears, aren't they?! Is she the one that eventually joins the party?
Marcille, you're a beautiful frog woman to me.
If I didn't know that Chillchuck is a dad already, I would have known it at this point. What a thing to say. "oh no, which one of these kids grown men is going to cause more trouble if left unattended"
I'm sure that's fine.
...........

But when you put it that way, it seems a little.... simple?
Kabru is beginning to suspect he's in the wrong class.
"Ah yes, a little freak that scuttles around from paintings to reality and speaks in archaic and mysterious tones. GOTTA be a Sorcerer. And hella mad, too!"
The math checks out, your honor.
Her best, Karbohydrate. She did her best.
Oh Laios, you're a hoot.
Kabru, you literally said Laios is a terrible liar three seconds ago. Maybe be a little less obvious? 😂
...you've done this to yourself, mate.
Okay, you know what. I take it back. I still don't like Kabru but watching him suffer IS supremely entertaining.
Okay, I can see how he might jump to the wrong conclusions here. They did not, in fact, eat the orcs.....
Orcs are duty bound to slap ya upside the head.
I love how genuinely patient Senshi is, and how good he is at listening. Chillchuck was worried but he's just vibing with new friends.
I'm sure they're having a grand old time.
What do those ears do, hmmm?
I enjoy the fact that he says "they're all treated as heinous criminals" instead of passing moral judgement and saying 'they're beyond reproach' or the like. He knows the consequences, and remarks not at all on whether or not he agrees with the judgement itself.
I could also draw some parallels here about how Japan treats all drugs but. Well. That's another topic.
Oh, noooo. As opposed to that other way of dying, where your corpse is dragged about in a carnival fashion after you die, to dry up in the light of day forever after.
Oh wait.
This bitch is really only here for the drama. 😅
FALIN?!?!?!?! MY GIRL
WHY THE LONG......body...?
....................cool. Cool cool cool cool cool. Alright. Okay okay okay. Alright.

I've been reading Dungeon Meshi and the cover for chapter 52 really stood out to me:
I think this cover so perfectly demonstrates the core themes that have been set up throughout the series thus far and also represents the characters really interestingly. Specifically the differences in their upbringings through the act of eating.
(Analysis under the cut ^_^)
First off, Laios and Falin are eating alone because they left home early in life and only have had eachother. They've had other party members but they've never enjoyed the toudens company like the two think they do, especially Laios. The two are alone because often times their party members don't actually care for them or see them as friends.
Marcille is eating in a cafeteria at her magic school, the composition is symmetrical to show the rigid lifestyle of the school and show how routine it is. It was a core time in marcilles life because she was happy and because it was structured. Often times, structure is the most comfortable thing someone can have, even if it is ultimately fleeting. School will end eventually and most of the connections you make are temporary but still effect us.
Chilchuck is eating with his family, showing the importance of his family to him. I really like this one in particular because even if his family is important to him, he'll always keep them at an arms length. His face is the only one shown, showing this about him. His face is also being cleaned by another person, showing the need for vulnerability and letting your gaurd down around people you care for, but also how Chilchuck is unwilling to do that.
Senshi is eating alone, he doesn't have a table either, showing how he lived in the dungeon for a long time and how he didn't have anyone to feed or care for even if it was something he deeply longed for. He's alone because he doesn't have anyone that could be there for him anymore, no family, no friends. I'm crying actually.
Finally, with Izutsumi she's eating with another person. Her table maners are poor, she can't hold chop sticks correctly and she's giving away the food she doesn't enjoy. We've seen this about her countless times but it's really amplified by this because it shows that she's always been like this, it's ingrained in her behaviour because no one either cared enough to try to teach her to be polite or never properly made an effort to. I'm sure Maizuru would try to fix her maners, but wouldn't do it in a thoughtful caring way that'd be actually helpful for izutsumi. She'd probably try to "whip her into shape" rather than treat her with compassion and patience.
All of these really accurately show how important connections are, how you need people. You need someone that will never treat you poorly, someone that will stick with you through thick and thin because they genuinely love you. You need the simplicity of routine, you need people that gravitate in and out of your life, those connections are important and often temporary but mean the most in the time you knew them. You need family, people you can let your gaurd down around and be truly happy with, even if it's hard to. You need people to care for, people you can feed and love in the simplest terms of helping them. And finally, you need people who teach you, people who will be there for you with kindness and treat you with compassion even when you are doing what they deem as bad.
I'm still not finished with this series but I genuinely love it so much so far. I'm barely halfway through and it's developed emotionally impactful and deeply honest themes and ideas that really strike a cord with me. It's so interesting and I can't wait to finish the series and better understand these characters ^_^
Thank you for reading all the way through!! Feel free to add your own bits of analysis or additional food for thought :33 (no spoilers tho please since I've still not finished the series)

Falin in a Relationship!
Recipe: Falin x Reader, Falin x Feminine! Reader, Reader isn't explicitly a girl but they're a feminine person
WC: 609
Chef's Note: It's been a while since I've written something that isn't reverse1999! I've been meaning to write Dungeon Meshi x Reader for a while! And after checking the tags, I was shocked to see none of the girls being written!!! Dungeon Meshi has so many beautiful women, why is no one writing about them? Anyways, I plan to do one for Marcille too, bc I'd feel bad if I did one of the doomed yuri girls and not the other... Who else should I do? Keep in mind I prefer writing girls!

You have to be INCREDIBLY obvious with your feelings in order to get through to her. No amount of flirting will get through her head. She just thinks you’re being nice.
When you do confess to her, she seemingly doesn’t react at first. She gives a simple “Thank you.” And wanders away. Don’t be fooled though, she’s only doing this so she can hide away and cover her face. She’s deeply flattered and flustered by your confession, she just doesn’t want to show it.
Falin loves gift giving. If she sees something that reminds her of you, she’s getting it right away. Rocks the color of your eyes, robin egg shells (you wore a dress this color once! She remembers it clearly), berries and nuts (she knows which ones you prefer). All of these things will be casually placed into your hands without explanation. She rarely talks about her own feelings, especially her romantic ones, so it’s up to you to decide what they mean.
Quality time is really really big for Falin. She wants to spend as much free time with you as possible. One of her favorite things to do with you is cooking! She likes to experiment in the kitchen, not strictly following the recipe. The success of the dishes varies… Sometimes they’re really good, sometimes they’re hot garbage. But she’ll still eat every bite, as it was a labor of love from the both of you.
Stray animals follow the two of you around constantly. You know it’s because Falin has a weak spot for them and feeds them on her way home, but she denies this adamantly. Stray cats push up against her legs and purr, and stray dogs always wag their tails when she walks by. She seems to have a way with animals that makes them really like her. And because you have her scent on you, they like you too.
Falin gets sensory overload in crowded places. When she’s beginning to grow nervous, she’ll clutch onto your arm and bury her head in your shoulder. Your scent is really calming to her. When you switch perfumes, she gets upset.
The fanciest date you’ll get with Falin is going to a play. She’ll dress in a casual, loose fitting suit (or whatever you dress her in, she doesn’t exactly care for fashion), and might even put on make up. All of that gets washed away however, as Falin always ends up crying during the emotional bits of the show. She’s not exactly a pretty crier either. Puffy red cheeks, snot dripping from her nose, her large eyes slightly red from tears. It’s a good idea to bring a handkerchief if going with her.
HIKES!!! Falin loves going on hikes, and will take you along as well if you let her. She’ll tell you about the herbs, berries, and flowers you see on the way. About how to grow them and their medicinal purposes. She’ll talk about the bugs the two of you see, their behaviors and properties. And she’ll point out all the animals on the trail, and talk about their habits and diets. The amount of knowledge she has on nature is stunning, and you always end up learning something new.
Though Falin is a bit spacey, she never forgets any of your likes or interests. She tries to meet you halfway on them, even if she can’t understand them. She’ll try to read the books you like, play the games you’re into, and watch the things you’re interested in. Even if she doesn’t like it herself, she’ll always try to turn it into something the both of you can enjoy.

Dungeon Meshi Liveblog: "What did [orcs] taste like?" {*distant sounds of tanoraqui going feral*}
I'm enjoying Chilchuck more in the manga because I notice him more, because he's less front-and-center talkative but in the background he's visibly thinking about things. I certainly noticed and enjoyed this moment in the anime, too, but it's a good example: Chilchuck is by far the best in this party at people, in terms of reading a room, understanding long-term group dynamics, and considering larger social questions like morality. His pattern recognition skills are obviously superb, and he applies them to dungeon navigation, trap- and monster-disarming, and social dynamics. He understands and gives practical advice on the relationships within a successful vs unsuccessful dungeon parties, and the skills of leaders thereof. He can often be seen eyeing the terrible new food consideringly before eating it. He's the one most often calling Laios out about No Eating Humanoids, including picking up on the fishmen eggs. When Laios complains that that's just based on a "feeling", Chilchuck does think about it - but still, when Marcille says of the dryads that maybe it doesn't matter if the plant is humanoid, Chilchuck says with concern, "Marcille..." He's the first to wonder how to make money from the dragon, but it's a practical concern, not greed. He's the only who realizes and convinces everyone that they have to turn back.
It all adds up to a guy who's never read a textbook of moral philosophy or the makings of a stable society in his life, but who could probably expound on them in layman's terms while drunk off his ass in a bar. He's responsible, including wanting to look out for his people, and very practical, and genuinely whip-smart. I'm not at ALL surprised to learn that he observed the systemic abuse of halffeet in the dungeon-delving trade and organized a union against it.
.
Shuro: Just say the highlights, alright?
Laios: We killed the red dragon, got Falin out of its stomach and resurrected her, but then we ran into the Mad Mage ad were separated.
Shuro and Kabru:
...actually, it's interesting how surprised I am, and was when I watched this, to see how...Normal Human Interaction Laios is in this moment? Upon request, he handily gave an efficient summary of exactly the highlights that needed to be shared - both what the others needed/would want to know, and not what they didn't need to know, lest Marcille be arrested for dark magic. Is he more relaxed around his usual crew, and thus acts "weirder"? Is this just a very specific circumstance, ie, it's reasonable to think the whole party has been considering exactly how to describe their adventures to others?
Maybe more notably, he left out monster-eating, which is also a cultural taboo but one that he's shown no sign of respecting so far. One must ask, for a moment: wait, does he respect that it's taboo in polite company? It's true that Marcille and Chilchuck, who'd both dungeoned with him for [mumblemumbletime], didn't know until the start of the story - he's clearly only just started unleashing all this culinary glee, even if he probably did already share infinite useful monster(-killing) factoids. Or is he aware and respectful of the fact that Shuro's definitely of "highlights" definitely only includes What Happened To Falin? This, too, is a level of character insight rarely if ever seen in Laios before.
.
Laios is like a deer in front of a lion... Yeah maybe I do want to watch Kabru flirt with him and Laios get completely flustered... Only if Laios turns it around by (later, after fleeing the initial scene) bluntly asking if Kabru wants to go on a date and/or have sex, and Kabru.exe stops functioning.
.
One must ask, for a moment: wait, does [Laios] respect that [eating monsters is] taboo in polite company? -my considerations 10 seconds ago in in-canon time
nvm, he's back on his bullshit! :) <3
Which! Indicates that his summary WAS intentionally geared toward Shuro's known preference, with maybe a dash of responsible dungeoneer team leader-to-team leader "fyi the Mage IS around"!
.
Ok now for the bit I'm particularly obsessed with...
Shown: man forcibly slamming down an impenetrable mental barrier called "Doing What I Must" in between Traumatic Memories & Moral Qualms and Words, Tone, Facial Expressions, Body Language & Anything Else Someone Else Could Sense:
Shown: Man with aforementioned barrier firmly in place [but still possibly seeing horrors on the backs of his eyelids]:
(Also shown: Man increasingly wishing that this is all some sort of elaborate hallucination brought on by sleep deprivation and stress:
.
Then this!
Until proven otherwise, I'm pretty certain that this last panel is the exact moment Kabru's brain started bouncing like a yo-yo wrt Laios. Because!
Kabru invited himself into this conversation as part of his overall quest: to look for a decent King for the dungeon. [ABBA playing faintly in the background] He's officially given up "finding" rather than "becoming", but he hasn't 100% ruled it out as an option - the goal is to get one.
Imagine that Kabru's brain includes a little hexagon like the food matrix, but for necessary aspects of the new King of the Golden Kingdom. In order, Laios goes...
- up several notches in "Likely Ability to Kill Mad Mage" by having defeated the red dragon and met the Mage
- down probably 1 notch in Trustworthiness/Honesty(/Readability to Kabru Specifically, who is prepared to Manage a mediocre candidate if that's what it takes)
- plunges down in the meta-category of Will Prevent Another Utaya by plummeting like a Boeing in the technically-not-on-the-chart category of Triggers Kabru's Trauma by admitting - bragging! delightedly! - that he eats monsters. Kabru's trauma is centered around monsters eating people. What sort of horror is a person who eats monsters? (Yet, perhaps already starting to yo-yo: if monsters eating people is the ultimate evil, what is this reversal...?)
Then Kabru asks a few innocuous, friendly questions about this Absolute Horror, because that's what Kabru does: he lies through his teeth about his own opinions and discomfort in order to put others at ease and (thus) achieve his goals. Laios gives innocuous, friendly answers.
THEN: ORCS. This whole comic, we've had the debate about whether it's okay to eat humanoid monsters, with Laios begrudgingly agreeing to his party's refusal. And orcs aren't even humanoid monsters, they're full-on demihumans! Second cousins of tallmen!
Kabru actually has to take a moment to process this new depth of depravity which he swiftly assumes Laios has sunk to. I imagine WWII air raid sirens are going off in his brain. Laios is But then he leaps this horrific chasm, too, itchy though his knife hand may be - interestingly, his face isn't shown in the comic, but in the show, Kabru retains the exact same friendly, eagerly interested tone of voice when he asks, "What did they taste like?"
- (Sidenote: truly, in all of this, I'm most obsessed with Kabru's ability, willingness and determination to seemingly-blithely hopskotch and/or outright running-jump over any moral qualm for long enough to get the other guy to dig their own grave and/or let down their guard. Who even are you under your infinitely shifting mask, sir. Do you even know? Because I think some of what we've seen that's more "real" is part of the mask you wear to be the Hero Who Will Be King.)
And Laios realizes what he'd implied and says, alarmed at the misunderstanding (though it's not clear if that's for moral reasons or social awkwardness) but still smiling with excited pride, "No no!! We didn't eat them! Due to circumstances, we're currently working with them!"
With them! Laios is yoinked out of, if not the depths, then at least the utmost depths - while also snapping unexpectedly upward in Alliance-Building (pref. Interspecies, Local-Centric). Laios had already rated a 2, maybe 3/5 for his party makeup, but given his known lack of people skills, I can't imagine Kabru expected him to go any higher than that - and with orcs! Orcs who are maligned by everyone else; for whom the Island Lord regular offers a bounty!
Now, this IS predicated on the assumption that Kabru considers orcs a people who should be treated with like a legitimate, well, people, rather than killed like vermin. But I think I'm on solid ground, considering a) Kuro the kobold being a (mostly) respected member of his party and their secret late-night study-friendship; b) Kabru's harshly learned skepticism of the stories Elves tell about themselves and other races, which is where we've seen the heart of anti-orc sentiment; and c) Kabru thinks the Island Lord is a moron.
Mind you, I think the yo-yo-ing is relatively subconscious at this point, and won't start reaching an audible fever pitch until Kabru learns about the black magic in, oh, another 5 minutes or so.
...but I really need to go to bed, so I'll see what overanalysis I make of that tomorrow!

Nobody Asked
Doing this @vesuviaweekly prompt with Odysseus style "Nobody" lmao. Also, I added that Muriel likes grilled eel alongside the smoked eel he typically eats for the sole fact that I think Muriel would like eel kabayaki (I only know this dish from Delicious in Dungeon/Dungeon Meshi lmaoo, it's the grilled parasite dish, but damn does it look tasty!)
(also note; reader's experiences on writing are NOT based on my experiences!!!)
Pairing: Muriel x reader
Warnings: N/a
Summary: Despite technically only being roommates, you and Muriel care for each other deeply, enough so that Muriel's more than willing to defend your online presence, while treating you to a cozy warm meal with cuddles and tender affection
Vesuvia Weekly Prompt | Masterlists | The Arcana Masterlist
Word Count: 2156
════════ |⚙⌨⚙| ════════
It baffles you really, to see the name "nobody" constantly cropping up on your computer screen as you look at the commissions lined up for you. It wasn't often you got commissions really, you weren't that big of a presence online compared to some of your peers and yet you can't help the half giddiness and delight you get when you find your inbox full of a handful of requests. Most people really liked the fluffy cute stuff you made, but once or twice you'd get a request for something more interesting; something that most others didn't really seem to enjoy.
You liked it though.
Sometimes the request was a fun challenge; an interesting dive into the darker aspects of a character or the fascinating moral conflicts of what you should do and what you need to do. Other times, they were requests that circled around your favorite topics. the things you could just ramble on and on and on about for hours. It didn't appeal to everyone of course, and some people didn't like it when you included those dark aspects or that gush of interest you have in some niche topic, but you liked it. It tended to be the target of your passion projects, the muse of the grand majority of your unfinished drafts. Unfinished half because of the agony of creative blocks and half because... Well, you weren't exactly sure if you wanted to post it really. Who would like it anyways?
The last time you posted something outside your typical fluffy stories, so many were so quick to whine about the lack of fluff that they so sought. If it were a darker story than usual, they'd bark about how horrible you were for saying that people should be like that. if it was something of desperate interest to you, you'd get snide comments asking when the next story is, or that you should be working on shoveling their fluffy sweet entertainment into their open and awaiting mouth. It wasn't all horrible of course, there were many who expressed their love and admiration for your non-fluffy works, but still the cruel comments always stuck out, lingering in your mind like a piece of gum in hair.
"Nobody asked for this," you remember some snarky jerk commenting. "Just take it down."
You blocked them promptly after, hissing a bitter sigh, at the sudden infestation of cruelty that had surrounded you. It was nice, in a sense to know that you now had the most of them blocked, but it still worried you, still stung a bit, knowing that some of those people who once so kindly and lovingly enjoyed your stories went out of their way not to say how much they loved the things that they loved you created, but to yell at you for daring to make something different from your usual works. Something in their eyes, abhorrent.
Which was why it both baffles you, and yet delights you when you started to get those requests. A work about bloody horrible trauma. A depiction of violent horrible gore. Of a monster who kills and maims. Or just asking about a recent side interest you mentioned once or twice in your tags. All requested by "nobody"
"Nobody asked for this." It almost makes you laugh.
You've been talking about it to your roommate, while he cooks dinner in the kitchen, chopping away at potatoes, tossing veggies and spices into the big bubbling pot on the stove.
"I'm half tempted to unban the jerk to help Nobody prove their point." you say with a grin, chuckling as you swing your legs from where you're improperly sitting on your seat. You know that if he wasn't busy making food, Muriel would glare at the way you teeter almost precariously on your seat, but you trust yourself enough to not, fall too horribly, and trust the distance between your butt and the floor to not be all too worried about falling.
"....Did they really just do it to prove a point?" Muriel asks wearily, pausing a moment from his fluttering around the pot in what you assume to be a re-assessment of the spices he could use. He hadn't been very used to using spices apparently, only opting to use them since they were here in the form of Asra's left-behind spice rack, and their explicit permission to make something nice for yourselves with it. Also probably so that he wouldn't feel bad feeding you something bad. That always seemed to be a hangup of his.
"I mean, Maybe? Like the requests maybe not, maybe they actually enjoy reading my works but I did kinda think they used the name Nobody to just prove that one jerk wrong."
Muriel shrugs as he inspects the spice rack looking for something, stock still as he hovers over the vast selection Asra had left over for the two of you. Of course, over the many months the two of you have stayed here, not all the spices have remained the same, but the spices for Asra's favourite dish—blue-tongued skink—remain largely untouched, saved for the days when they'd visit, or the odd occasion when the two of you wanted to practice trying to properly cook the damn thing without making it taste like rubber. Really you just didn't know how the hell Asra managed to do it.
"Maybe it's not to the jerk. Maybe it's just for you. To make you happy....Or something."
You didn't catch if Muriel actually found the spice he was looking for or not, but he goes back to hovering in front of the pot, back still turned to you as he hems and haws over what else to add.
You hum in reply, trying to lean forward in your already teetering chair to catch a whiff of his current creation. "I mean, you can't go wrong with salt and pepper right?"
"Wha—oh, yeah, right."
He grabs the both of them then, tossing in a large pinch of salt before he begins methodically grinding pepper into the pot. He slows a little as he does it, speaking up before he sets the thing away. "I just don't think it's smart to unblock someone just to make them more mad."
"Yeah," you sigh, sinking back into your seat. "That's fair."
You grin slightly as you peer over at Muriel, pulling on a pair of embroidered oven mitts. A Kokkhuri pattern if you remember. One he had been trying to practice on nearly every piece of fabric he could get his hands on. You've found a few patterns on the insides of some of your clothes, the same particular pattern that seems to hold some meaning, though you can't tell what and he refuses to share.
"I guess that's a no on un-blocking the jerk, huh?"
Turning off the stove and grabbing the pot, Muriel finally turns back towards you, wearing a small smile on his face as he sets the stew on the table. Like the highest spell from you and Asra's shared store, the scent of the spiced meal engulfs you like a hug, making you relax purely out of habit. It really is amazing how easily it comes from the things that he makes for the both of you. The things you get to share.
He shrugs with one shoulder, as he grabs your shared bowl and fills it with stew, sitting beside you as you lean precariously on your seat towards him. "You didn't ask for their opinion did you?"
You laugh, a short bark of laughter, that nearly has you toppling from your seat if Muriel wasn't already holding onto it. He glares at you a little while you giggle, half at the near accident, and half at the coy corny joke.
"Yeah, yeah. 'Nobody asked for that' I get it."
Choosing not to risk another accident, you change your seating position. It's still not normal by any means, but this time your legs splay over Muriel's lap making his face bloom in shades of pink and red. Still, he doesn't dare try to escape, and keeps smiling, as he carefully rubs a hand on the outside of your thigh, though he cannot help his thumb from wandering as it strokes across your clothed skin.
The gesture, as much as you adore it, doesn't last long, broken as Muriel takes a spoon and begins to feed you, blowing on the spoonful before he offers it to you, like some parent feeding their child. You'd be embarrassed if it hadn't grown so common between the both of you. You do it to him too after all.
Cruelly, however, Muriel asks a question just as you eat your offered spoonful.
"...is it bad that they didn't do it to prove something wrong?" You grin as you glare, though Muriel still apologizes as if he'd somehow hurt you, but your spoonful didn't exactly have much to chew so thankfully you're quick to swallow.
"I mean, not really? It could be both I guess. I don't know though. They just feel special as a follower. I don't even know who they were before but they've been following me for a while now, and they've been liking and relogging my works all the time, and on top of all that they've renamed themself and requested my least requested fics! It's just so.... I don't know. I feel like I ought to do something in return. They just do... It feels like they're doing so much for me."
The bowl is in your hands now, and you've been feeding Muriel a few spoonfuls as you talk, all too eager to watch him eat more, despite still being so hesitant to do so himself. He lets, you, too focused on your words as you hemmed and hawed over this or that, just opening his mouth to let you feed him at random intervals. By the end you've probably fed him a good few spoonfuls more than he'd normally let you give him, but you're not really paying attention to that and neither is he. He stares at the bowl for a bit. Opening his hands in a silent request to be handed back the bowl, which you readily comply to only to watch him stare down at it for a little while longer.
He stirs the soup in the bowl for a bit, and you wait patiently for him to sort his thoughts out, before he takes up a spoonful, and once more, offers it to you with a gentle blow on it's surface.
"I think you do a lot for them too. You put a lot of effort into the things you create, even if you don't get paid for it, or even if not everyone likes it. Don't.... Don't make light of all the good things you've done... You're not obligated to pay them back."
He pauses again at the end of it, and you can't help but almost chuckle at his words.
"'Do as I say, not as I do', huh?"
His face picks up in colour again, but he nods, taking up his spoon to feed you again.
You don't let him feed you for long, taking the bowl back to feed him a few spoonfuls. In the cozy silence knit between you, you feed him some more of his share, blowing twice on the spoonful before you feed it to him, making sure he's eaten plenty before you hand it back to him. And back and forth you pass your food between the both of you. Eventually you fill your bowl with a second serving, and a conversation starts up anew, talking about work, about the nearby market and your favourite bakery, and the next time Asra was planning to visit. Amidst the chatter, the running assessment of who ate how much fades from your memory, but watching Muriel set the empty bowl down to lean back in his seat, and pull your legs just a little closer to his stomach tells you that he's more than eaten his fill.
"Full?" you ask with a bend of your legs, pulling yourself closer so that you can better snuggle. Your chair clatters a little when it hits his, though you're practically sharing the seat Muriel sits on, even if your weight was mostly on your own seat.
He feels a bit warm as he wraps an arm around you to pull you close and gently rub at your shoulder, but he hums his confirmation, squeezing you a little as if to really hammer home the message. "What about you? Did you like it?"
You hum back at him, tucking yourself almost sleepily against his side. "Hey Mur. Thanks for taking care of me a bunch. Even if Asra mostly asked you to."
He scoffs at your comment. "We're roommates because Asra asked me to be here, but nobody asked me to take care of you."
So warm in his embrace you can't help but yawn a little as you giggle and shake your head at the obvious chance at a joke. "What? They've been sending you asks too?"
Again, Muriel scoffs at your comment, muttering something you just barely catch. "I can't ask myself to do something."
"...What?"
"Hm?"
