Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam
Note: this is not a review but more of an outpouring of thoughts that strike you when your mind is captivated by beautiful frames written, enacted and captured; maybe spoilers ahead.
Some movies are bold enough to force you to walk with the characters, often in sombrely long sequence of shots where nothing happens (nothing from the point of view of a regular movie-watcher). Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam is a spectacular example (and I am positive Malayalam cinema has a plethora of such examples, esp in recent times). But to do this, I would imagine, requires a boldness of a different kind.
I mean, imagine having an entire minute or two just of a sequence of shots showing Mammootty – a James who's just woken up as a Sundaram (but we dont know that yet) – walking into the village: first through lush-green paddy fields, then into the serpentine lanes of the village, turning around into a corner street, walking past an old man in his afternoon siesta under the shade of his thinnai, and finally to his house. and because this is no accidental placement, you'll find the same happen in the climax when Mammotty walks back to the bus all the way from "his" house – a beautifully-long sequence of shots, the whole sequence spanning almost three minutes, with Veedu varai uravu as the tonal backdrop.
Perceptions from such scenes are subjective and I can imagine some folks not liking it. Personally though, I feel these are very crafty scenes that force you – the viewer – to not just consume what's happening on the screen but, by the nature of the ordinariness of the sequence of shots, make you go into yourself and start thinking about the non-ordinariness of what just transpired in the movie. This is in some sense similar to the long-shots post-scene that makers like Spielberg employ where a scene is done but the camera stays on a close-up shot of a character (presumably in deep thought) subverting the viewer to actually do the same – think deeply about what's just happened or what's about to happen.
Isn't it such a wholesome pleasure to watch such a fabulous collaboration of Tamil and Malayalam characters, in such a luxurious mix of Tamil and Malayalam dialogues? I am probably biased here: I got goosebumps just watching Ramesh Thilak share screenspace with Soubin in Kumbalangi Nights because, to me, that felt like a greater cinema acknowledging the talents of a Tamil actor often overlooked by Tamil cinema itself (hopefully, not so true anymore), so watching a whole village (no pun intended) of Tamil characters employed in a beautiful Malayalam film (I'm calling it that only because the main shakers and movers of the film are fellow Mallus) is a paradise.
That the entire movie has as its backdrop not just a rural setting but the constant drone of old Tamil movie scenes and songs can be chalked up as a creative mixing technique, something oft-employed in a lot of movies but only for some scenes. But this film takes it several notches up: not only is the presence of these songs and scenes near-constant and near-throughout the film, but they are often outrageously spot-on and in-sync with the movie scene! I dont know better so I can only imagine that the director has an enviable encyclopedic knowledge of 50s-70s era of Tamil cinema.

HARSHANA RESIDENCE, MEDAVAKKAM, CHENNAI, TAMILNADU, INDIA.
*Harshana Residence at Medavakkam: Revival of Tradition in Modern Living*
Located in Medavakkam, Chennai, Harshana Residence sits amidst a neighborhood of diverse architectural styles and varying building heights. Designed with a vision to revive and reinterpret elements of traditional architecture, the residence blends heritage-inspired concepts with contemporary needs. The design focuses on fostering social interactions, enhancing connections between spaces, and seamlessly integrating nature into the built environment.
Central to the residence's concept is the reintroduction of architectural elements such as the thinnai (a traditional raised platform for seating) and kunds (water reservoirs), which act as social nodes for informal gatherings. These features not only encourage interaction but also echo the essence of traditional South Indian homes. Strategically placed open courts punctuate the structure, maximizing natural light and cross-ventilation while establishing a fluid connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. The integration of landscaped pockets within the residence further enhances this interplay, creating a serene living environment.
The residence is accessed through two distinct entrances, catering to different needs. A formal entrance leads to the welcome pavilion, offering a grand reception area for guests. In contrast, an informal entrance caters specifically to the client’s elderly parents, providing direct access to a comfortable lounge space designed for their convenience. The internal layout of the house follows an open-plan concept, with interconnected spaces for the kitchen, dining, and informal living areas, ensuring a sense of continuity and openness.
The home features five thoughtfully designed bedrooms, each with its unique purpose. The client’s parents’ bedroom is situated for easy access, while the master bedroom shares a direct connection with the daughter’s bedroom, fostering a sense of family closeness. Two additional guest bedrooms provide privacy for visitors. Every bedroom opens to a balcony, offering visual connections to the outdoors and inviting in natural light and fresh air.
A basement garage, accessible via a ramp, reflects the client’s passion for automobiles, providing a dedicated space for their collection. The backyard further enhances the home’s social appeal, with a swimming pool and shared interaction spaces that serve as a bridge to the neighborhood, promoting community engagement.
Balancing tradition and modernity, Harshana Residence exemplifies how architecture can revive cultural roots while addressing the practicalities of contemporary living.

Thinnai Swami was a direct disciple of the Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi and Acharya in the life of The Supreme Pontiff of Hinduism. Among the hundreds of remarkable souls who dwelled in the town of Tiruvannamalai, basking in the physical presence of Paramashiva Himself in the form of the Hill, Arunachala, Thinnai Swami was an outstanding being who demonstrated absolute surrender to his own Guru's words. MANICARAJ RESIDENCE , VYASARPADI, CHENNAI, TAMILNADU
This residence in Vyasarpadi has been meticulously designed to meet the needs of a family of two brothers, comprising 4 houses. The client is engaged in a well-established scrap business. Upon the closure of the factory, they acquired fire kiln bricks that had been present for over 30 years. These bricks were of different shapes like T-shaped, Cylindrical shaped, L-shaped and Rectangular shaped.
By incorporating these salvaged old bricks into the design, we were able to achieve a practical and visually appealing solution that aligns with modern sustainability goals. The strategic placement of the bricks ensures proper indoor ventilation and allows natural light to filter in, reducing the dependence on artificial lighting and enhancing the overall living environment.
The balcony openings have been incorporated with an organic arrangement of the fire kiln bricks which brings out a smooth seamless emphasis on the building from its surroundings.
Adjacent to the parking area, traditional thinnai spaces offer charming outdoor seating areas, enhancing the overall aesthetic of the residence. Upon entry, a living space with thinnai-style sofas creates a minimalist interior in the sunken space, with the entire living area sunken. the triple storey height providing natural light and ventilation to all interior spaces of the building, covered at the top with glass.
The central courtyard, featuring traditional thinnai seating and green courts, acts as a focal point for natural light, creating a serene space for relaxation and social gatherings.Landscaping on the terrace enhances visual appeal and transforms the space into a more enjoyable and functional outdoor area. The yellow and white marble used in this residence gives the space a sophisticated and elegant look, adding warmth and brightness while enhancing the overall luxury and value of the home. This project not only embodies contemporary style but also underscores the importance of sustainability.

Illam | இல்லம் 🏡🏠🛖🏚🪴⛲️🌸🌺🌳🎍🌴🥥 I’ve always loved Tamil traditional architecture. Lime plastered walls, red oxide cement flooring, painted Kolam at thinnai, coloured frosted window glasses, mullai poo chedi climbed on terrace or a padal, pot tiled roofs, thottam with kinaru, vilakku madam and hundreds of tiny details. I used to live in such houses growing up and i want to draw them more. Being an architect I appreciate them more ❤️ Have you ever lived in such beautiful houses? And Tell me what you like about them? If you like what I’m doing and want to support my work, you could donate me a coffee via PayPal or become a Patreon or buy my products or just simply leave a kind comment or a DM :) links in bio #illustration #rafflesiaillustration #digitalillustration #ipadpro #procreate #characterdesign #tamilartist #tamilillustrator #tamilcreator #tamilchildrensbooks #tamilchildrensbookartist #tamilhouse #tamilhousehold #tamilfamily #veedu #illam #kudumbam https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci5Rb1XJTJo/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

July's felt heavy.
Heavy like Cancerians I have dated in the past.
Like a cloud ready to downpour just walked into my warm, bright sunroom. That I have designed the ventilation for, a perfect balance between the outdoor and indoor.
A room spilling into a stair-y porch, like a thinnai.
That opens out into a wild garden.
And in walks a Cancer Sun, like a month of July
To spend entirely too much time on feeling a feeling.
Who's gonna pay the bills bro???

You Are An Amazing Actor - Believe It Or Not?
You Are An Amazing Actor – Believe It Or Not?
We just got back after a blissful but hot two weeks in India. Trips to India inspire my creativity because there is so much happening. And I don’t usually have a plan when I am there, which is the right space for creativity to strike. An image showing Thinnai – like an open verandah on ground floor. My ancestral home in my village is an old-style one with an open interior and made for joint…

𝑰𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑳𝒊𝒇𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒖𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒆 𝑷𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒇𝒇 𝒐𝒇 𝑯𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒖𝒊𝒔𝒎 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒖𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒆 𝑷𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒇𝒇 𝒐𝒇 𝑯𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒖𝒊𝒔𝒎 𝒔𝒘𝒆𝒆𝒕𝒍𝒚 𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒊𝒏 𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒍𝒊𝒇𝒆, 𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒔 𝑹𝒂𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒂 𝑴𝒂𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒔𝒉𝒊. In the words of the Supreme Pontiff of Hinduism: “When I remember him and his life I can never stop my overflowing emotions and devotion. I can say, you may love any number of people in your life. You may marry anytime in your life. You may do whatever you want. But your first love, the boy or girl who caught your heart or attention in your childhood, stays in your heart forever, even after that person changes their form or quality. Same way, my first love is Ramana Maharishi. How many masters have entered my life? How many people have impressed me? How many people have given me experiences, enlightenment, spirituality, different experiences? But Bhagavan still remains as my first love. If I just live like him and die, I feel I am fulfilled. What a discipline! What a life! Ramana Maharishi was never a couch potato. Understand? A man who has merged with Existence, experienced Existence, can never be called a couch potato. He will naturally be a high achiever; maybe in different dimensions. Being a high achiever is one of the important qualities of an Enlightened Being.” – the Supreme Pontiff of Hinduism on 17 December 2012 https://ift.tt/3BMKi2z Throughout the divine childhood of the life of His Divine Holiness, He was raised surrounded by the disciples of Ramana Maharshi, such as Annamalai Swamigal, Thinnai Swami, Sadhu Om and His Acharyas like Kanakkammal who themselves became strong pillars of the enlightenment eco-system of Tiruvannamalai. https://ift.tt/3BDWJgH
