They put chanukah candles on sale for $0.71 a box the week before chanukah

during christmas i think about little harry who hears the dursleys laugh and celebrate under the dim twinkling lights of their christmas tree

i think about him watching dudley tear through tens of gifts and vernon and petunia giving each other kisses and wondering what he did to not be a part of that

but then i also think about ron and the weasleys giving him his first decent christmas present in the form of fudge and a handmade sweater

those two weren't the only gifts he'd received that morning from them, because they unknowingly gifted him, and will continue to gift him the presence of a family

he'd never spent another christmas without a weasley sweater after that

the first christmas after the war was a pain, and it wasn't the same, not really, but he'd cradled the knitted sweater molly gave him, hugging her close and ignoring the crooked strokes of the letter H or the unkempt stitches of the edges

but then he'd had his first christmas with ginny as a married couple and he thought that he'd never celebrated anything so extravagant in his life. their house was nearly red and green and gold from the decorations, and all throughout the day harry was smiling, the corners of his mouth lifting even more when he hears his wife's giggles and poor renditions of christmas carols

so what if those first few christmases were abysmal? the 9 bad ones (not ten because he at least had one with his parents) were all worth it, and he'd willingly go through them again to be able to have weasley christmases (and then potter christmases with his children) for the rest of his life

maybe thats why i've always seen myself in harry. despite being catholic, we've never been a festive family. no traditions, gifts, decorations, or celebrations, and i've grown accustomed to that growing up and learned to be okay with it. although i hope that i get to find a love like his and ginny's in the future too. :)
