cotton candy clouds | sylus
summary: you guilt-trip sylus into taking you to the carnival. you get caught up in more than just the festivities, hidden feelings finally coming to light. genres: romance, fluff, minor angst warnings: kissing, unrequited (not really) feelings, tender touches, pet names, incredibly self indulgent, profanity, cheesy af, fuck fate notes: limerence au, but a little less pain. now playing: siren guitar - carlos carty
Well, it seemed like a good idea.Â
Until it wasnât.Â
You see, the boardwalk wasnât too far of a walk from your bungalow. You saw the Ferris Wheel gleaming in the near distance from the passenger window of Sylusâ rental. Caught sight of it on the ride back after spending the morning with him.
The carnival beckoned to you. Taking you was the least Sylus could do after torturing you with restricting dresses and uncomfortable heels all weekend. And he could sweeten the deal by winning you a plushie and stuffing you full of cotton candy.Â
Sylus relented with a chuckle, pulling the car into the carport. Good on you for suggesting you travel on foot to the boardwalk after you dropped your bags at the house. He looked like he wanted to contest you, gaze turned skyward like he knew something was amiss. Instead, he shrugged and settled his dark shades onto his face, following your lead.Â
The carnival was lively.Â
It smelled of funnel cake, smoked turkey legs, and lubed machinery. People milled about, their glee staining the stratosphere. Carnies coerced you into trying for prizes. You had an armful of colorful plushies with a grin to match by mid-afternoon, courtesy of your boss and his impeccable aim.Â
If you hadn't known any better, you swore you were on a date. But you knew that could never be, given the state of your relationship and your position in Sylusâ life.Â
You were halfway through a candied apple when Mother Nature decided, ah, thatâs enough fun.Â
The sky, once a bright cyan with a golden sun pinned to its center, gave way to ominous, dark gray clouds. Thunder followed, and eventually, the nimbus clouds opened up to pelt the boardwalk below with its glacial downpour.
You scattered along with the other carnival goers, Sylus in tow, the spoils of your endeavor forgotten. On the race back to the bungalow, he grabbed your hand, and you laughed like two carefree adolescents as he tugged you across the sand to your temporary lodging.Â
You were breathless when you reached the porch, shoving into the warm sanctity of the entryway with a âHurry, hurry!â
It was quiet inside.Â
The light pouring in through the sliding doors and windows illuminated the stilled space. Your teeth chattered as Sylus helped divest you of your clothes in the living room. Such a gentleman, his gaze never dipping past your collarbones as he tore his sweater from his shoulders. He left you briefly, taking his warmth with him to light a fire beneath the mantle.Â
Clad only in your undergarments, you pawed at him, giggling amid your shivering when he came back to drape you in an oversized throw.Â
He led you to the high-pile rug in front of the fire. Sat down cross-legged, drawing you into his lap. He shrouded the pair of you in the throw blanket, his arms encasing your middle, hands smoothing over your arms to ward off the cold.
For a while, you sat like that, watching the fire kindle. Chuckling, panting, and existing in the moment until your shared quivering abated, and only the rhythm of your even breaths, the crackling fire logs, and distant waves crashing against the shore colored the air.Â
Even now, you sit like this, still housed in Sylusâ lap and arms, his chin notched in the hollow of your shoulder. He absently rocks your body side to side, his occasional pleased hum vibrating your spine.
Youâre no longer a sopping, chattering mess. Youâre much warmer than before, Sylusâ proximity causing your cheeks to prickle with heat. You donât want to disrupt the mood thatâs descended onto your shoulders. Ignore the complicated thoughts and feelings that burble to the surface, threatening to bare themselves in the face of your peace.Â
He feels too good. Smells even better, the scent of his cologne easing the tension from your shoulders. And a glance at him in your periphery reveals his lashes fluttering, eyes closed in what you assume is contentedness. You study him for a beat or two, ingesting the peachy tone stippling his cheek and the pretty curl of his lips. He looks so boyish and unguarded this way, his hair falling into his face, and you find yourself wanting to see this side of him more often.
âYou look like you want to say something,â he teases through a smile, thumb cruising over the skin of your belly.
You shake your head no, eyes wide like youâve been caught rifling through the cookie jar.Â
His hold on you stiffens the slightest. âAm I making you uncomfortable?â He moves to pull away, but you quickly ensnare his wrists with your hands, quietly imploring him to stay. He acquiesces, holding to you a little tighter. Nuzzles a little more affectionately, inhaling deep the warm aroma of your skin.
âWhatâs on your mind,â he queries on an exhale, tenderness lancing through his question. He almost sounds like heâs afraid to scare you off. Afraid to let you go, swept up in the spell of the moment and the sensation of your body against his.
Your lips pull into a rigid, thoughtful line. Your pulse thrums in your ears, and you rub cautious thumbs over the veins pulsing in Sylusâ hands as you study the geometric patterns of the rug. Sighing, you figure itâs best to broach the subject now rather than let it fester.
âIs this alright?â you timidly ask. Uncharacteristic of you, but in light of everything thatâs transpired since he whisked you away on this impromptu vacation, youâve become even more confused and unsure of yourself.
Sylus shifts, drawing back until you feel his eyes on the side of your face. In the corner of your vision, he cants his head quizzically, lips parting.
âWhat do you mean?â
The angle is awkward, your neck straining. But you turn as best you can to look at him, and the puzzled pinch of his brows makes your chest tighten.Â
âI mean, us being thisâŚclose. Is it really okay?â Your question hangs in the air like the pop and fizz of the fire. You watch his Adamâs Apple bob whilst he swallows, and he scrutinizes you, the cogs in his mind slowly turning.Â
âIs this a problem? Because if Iâm making you uncomfortable, sweetheartââ
âSylus, thatâsâŚthatâs not what I mean.â
He watches your lips tremble. Expression still reads like he has no idea what youâre on about. He strokes up your arm, encouraging you to elaborate. With another weighted sigh pushing through your nostrils, you relent.
âI mean, likeâŚwhat the hell are we doing here?â Try as you like to mask your frustration, bits and pieces of it leak into your words. You clench your fists in your lap, brows furrowing as your eyes burn and glaze over with the threat of tears. âWhy did you bring me here? The last few days have been so⌠wonderful and confusing, and IâI just wanna know where I stand with you.â
The past weekend with your boss has played out like a dream.Â
It began when Sylus snatched you away from the arctic darkness of the N109 Zone in favor of something brighter, more low-key. Wanted you to take a load off after employing you for so long. To show his appreciation for you laying your life on the line for him each day.
He bought you gifts at every turn. Said things that thoroughly derailed your perception of him. Touched you in ways that, although werenât sexual in nature, lit a fire within you and gave you an inkling of hope. Hope that he cared for you as much as you pined for him despite his history with the Hunter.Â
You knew it wasnât right to covet him like that. But you couldnât help yourself, and how heâd been behaving since you arrived on the island only worsened matters. He treated you like a lover more than his subordinate, and you neededâno, deservedâan explanation for the sudden shift in tone.Â
âI thought it was obvious,â he half-chuckles, shaking his head whilst pinching the bridge of his nose.Â
As if youâre the problem here.
You make a sound. Maneuver yourself in his lap to get a better look at him, fixing him with a perturbed look. Explain, demands the quirk of your brows.Â
âWell, itâs been brought to my attention that maybe I havenât been completely clear with my intentions.âÂ
Sylus shifts you around in his lap until youâre straddling him, your legs framing his hips, wrists instinctively crossing behind his neck. He drapes his arms about your waist, a wide, possessive hand at the small of your back to hold you in place. He peers at you with all the softness of the world, and from your vantage point, you make out the amber flecks nestled between the crimson wash of his irises.
He tilts his head, quietly studying you. Turning over the right words in his mind. âI care about you.â His voice is low and abrasive, but the crackle of it sparks in your chest like steel dragged across a flint stone.Â
Your breath hitches, and you watch him with widened eyes and parted lips.
âI care about you. Maybe more than I should. Perhaps more than I deserve to, but I do. And you mean more to me than mere words can illustrate.â
Great. Now you feel absolutely horrible amid the butterflies piling in your stomach. âSylusââ
He chuckles sardonically, glancing off to the side. âI thought that by bringing you here, I could make it inherently clear how I feel about you. No distractions. No outside forces. Nothing standing between us.â
Unconsciously, you gather his cheeks into your hands. Lure his gaze back to yours, and the look in his eyes makes your stomach somersault. Youâve never seen him so wounded. Like he fears your rejection, yet heâs determined to set the record straight.
Sylusâ voice steeps a few octaves when he closes in, his warm breath fanning over your lashes. You feel dizzy like you would collapse if not for his virile arms keeping you fastened to him.Â
âFate be damned,â he whispers. Molds his hand to the nape of your neck, fingers easing up into the delicate hair that resides there, and you shiver when his gaze slacks to your lips. âYou were an oversightâa pleasant oversight. A detour in my plans that I didnât anticipate. A detour I donât regret taking.â
His lips graze yours, and youâre panting as pleasant tingles ricochet up your spine.
âYou occupy all of my thoughts.â Sigh. âYou ruin me,â he husks, sealing your chest to his. âI donât want anyone else but you. And I know your mind has more than likely convinced you otherwise. But Iâm here to say that I trulyâŚâ He draws back to kiss the tip of your nose. âHonestlyâŚâ Brands the corner of your mouth with the languid drag of his lips. ââpine for no one else. Youâre the only person I want in this lifetime.â
âSylus,â you halfway sob in the slither of space between your mouths, every nerve in your body trained to the feel of him.
âYes, sweetheart?â
You swallow thickly, your mouth dry, your mind fogging over. âYou gonna keep waxing poetic, or are you gonna kiss me?â
He snorts out a laugh at your impatience, cupping your jaw with a tender, sweltering hand. âThere is nothing I would like more,â he breathes, luring you closer for a taste of your lips.Â

ŕ¨ŕ§ăđ§O TATTED ALL OVER HER BODYăËËăMMB
âââ ďšđąďšwanting to get your first ever tattoo, you take a recommendation from one of your college friends' on which parlor to go to, and which specific tattoo artistâmeret manon bannerman, who was ultimately drop-dead gorgeous.
pairing. tattoo artist!manon x f!r genre. fluff wc. 1.7k+ notes. missing manon sb nd i JUST saw the clip of her w dominic fike w a cigarette in her hand. đđ all the freaks on twt nd tt hating on her gmfu đ â ď¸ PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT CONDONE THE DEPENDENCE ON ANYTHING NICOTINE-RELATEDâIF EVER USED, USE IT AT A MODERATE PACE. ( MASTERLIST )
now playing â timeless by the weeknd, ft. playboi carti
THE BUZZING OF TATTOO GUNS spread across the parlor, as manon runs a hand through her hair, adjusting her white tank top and leather jacket. a cigarette remains slack in between her index and ring fingers, a sigh drifting from her lips. contrasting her cold demeanor was the hello kitty lamp sitting on her desk accompanied by a tattoo gun.
grabbing disinfectant spray, the ghanaian girl meekly disinfects all the surfaces, sterilizing all her equipment. tattooing other people's bodiesâleaving parts of herself and her art forever on themâalways seemed magical to manon, and so, she started in highschool, buying a shitty tattoo gun online. eventually, while at high school parties, she'd take commissions from people begging her to etch designs into their skin, usually taking cash as paymentâsometimes nicotine, even.
simple, rugged designs on random people's skins at parties eventually turned into nights spent in her bedroom, practicing her apprenticeship by cross-hatching designs on mannequins. every night, the ghanaian girl would be at home, cornered in her bedroomâsometimes with her friends to keep her companyâshading with pointillism from designs she found.
meret manon bannerman was never the type to really think about tattooing newbies, especially with the way her temper sometimes ran short, barely able to have the patience to deal with their face. however, because of her charming character, her co-workers usually assigned her to tattooing newbies, never letting her protest.
grabbing her phone, a myriad of notifications pop up on her lock screen. her eyes narrow at seeing daniela's name pop up, as she swipes up.
dani: turn the lights off before u leave manon. dani: if i see that the electric bill is high again im gonna fr gonna pocket ur paycheck
manon huffs, though a smile tugs the corners of her lips, before her thumbs move a mile a minute, typing back cheeky responses.
manzanita: i willll promise đ¤đ¤ manzanita: pocket my paycheck nd im telling ur mom.
the ghanaian girl plops her phone onto the counter, setting it face down. the bell at the front door rings, making manon slightly jolt up, a chain of shivers running down her back. a muffled curse escapes her breath, as she whips her head towards the front door, noticing you gingerly leaning against the front door.
"i- one of our mutual friends, lara, suggested for me to come here. i don't know if she told you considering the look on your face," you shrug, your voice barely above a whisper. with the ghanaian girl nodding, you saunter towards her, a meek smile on your face.
"yeah, she told meâjust didn't think you would be so⌠gorgeous," she bluntly drawls out, making you cock your head to the side. a giggle escapes your breath, both your cheeks and ears tinted with flushness. a small puff of amusements leaves your plush lips, shaking your head.
"look at youâtalented, creative, and stunning," you reciprocate her energy, a wide grin painting your face. the ghanaian girl pats the seat beside her at her station, beckoning for you to sit down. you slowly sit down, your heart practically poundingâyour first tattoo, and it was done by the most gorgeous girl ever?
an unbearable grin quirks up at the corners of her lips, your words garnering a chuckle from her, "yeah, you think so? you newâto tattooing, i mean?" her eyes trail from your eyes down to your lips, her gaze piercing. with your eyebrows furrowed and knitted together, you nod sheepishly at her question.
"no need to worry 'bout the pain; you got me," she lets out a giggle, making your heart tremble at the thought of a tattoo gun against your arm, held by a pretty girl, at that. the ghanaian girl crushes the cigarettes in her hand, disposing it into the ashtray by the window. she continues, "trust me; i've gotten a few tattoos and piercings."
"you got any ideas?" manon asks, as she disinfects her supplies once more, being cautious, especially with somebody who was only getting their first tattoo. that same smile lingers on her face, wanting to try to rid the worry lines creasing your forehead.
you shake your head, "still dunno what to get, i just know i want it on my hand. any ideas from you? i know you have good ideas in that head of yours." your eyesbrows furrow in question, your eyes fixating on the girl's features. a smile dances on her cheeks, almost elated to recommend any.
"what category? like funny, memorable, y'know," manon bites the inside of her cheek to prevent herself from just pressing your velvety lips against hers. her eyes scan your features, trying to think of an idea.
"surprise me?" you mumble, your voice barely above a whisper, as your gaze softens, your breath hitching in anticipation. and manon was just a simple girlâa girl who couldn't help but indulge in your pleas, especially when you were the textbook definition of adorable.
and so, over and over again, the needle of her tattoo gun hits against your delicate skin. sometimes it breaks, though other times, your skin is left raw and swollen. her dark eyes bore into your face, chuckles escaping her breath at the way you tried to suppress your winces.
a smile dances at her cheeks, "you okay, pretty?" making your heart pound. you nod, your eyes bright, as you ease into manon's touch, the needle lifting every few minutes to give you some clarity. she rubs your shoulder gently while pausing, before continuing.
while she continued, you mindlessly rant on and on about work, your mouth running miles a minute. words spill from your lips, as the ghanaian girl softly hums, showing indication that she was listening. every few minutes, she makes small, humorous quips, playing along to your jokes.
"y'know hand tattoos can fade away easily," manon hums, her hand rubbing against yours to soothe your worries. she sucks a breath in through her teeth before continuing, "it's a shame, isn't it?"
"i could always come back to youâno big deal," you shrug, taking deep breaths to suppress the sounds of pure pain escaping you.
"already wanna see me again? i'm just that great, aren't i?" she teases, as she wears a shit-eating grin on her face. that same grin morphs into a smirk, the corner of her lips lifting into one hastily. manon cocks her head to the side, her eyebrows slightly raising.
the ghanaian girl continues, faking a questioning face, "well, i donât know. you may have to convince me to do a touch-up on it." she scrunches her eyebrows, giggling.
a pout juts on your lips, "i could take you out for dinner, or well, advertise you! the same way lara doesâalways talkin' about your beautiful self and your work." you taunt, giving her a gentle smile.
"trying to bribe me nowâwow! did not expect that," manon coaxes, as her gaze fixates back on your hand, the needle leaving marks on your hand. as she finishes it up, she softly hums. standing up, manon grins at her work.
the tattoo had come out flawless, the cross-hatching done by the girl practically perfect. you blink your eyes, almost shocked at the sheer precision and patience needed for the perfect thickness of the lines; you knew manon was talented, but fuck.
on your hand was a crown etched onto it; you didn't know the meaning of it at all, but you could tell it meant something to the ghanaian girl. breaking your train of thought was her gentle, melodic voice.
"you like it?"
"'course i do! holy shit," you exclaim, immediately standing up, and pressing yourself against manon, wrapping your arms around the ghanaian girl's neck. safe to say, you were practically over the moon.
raising her fists, manon reciprocates your sheer enthusiasm, "i've won! you ought to take me on that dinner date, y'know." your eyes widen at her request, your eyebrows shooting up, alongside your smile wide. excitement bled from you, traveling through your veins.
shameless, without little thought in your head, you plea, "really? we have to!" your pleas elicit a series of chuckles from manon, the girl rubbing your shoulder. catching her breath, she nods.
"you and i, tomorrow night. i get off my shift earlier tomorrow," the ghanaian girl proposes, her eyes scanning your face for any indication of emotions. in response, you press your lips against manon's cheek gently.
"see you then, pretty girl," you drawl, slipping your payment into her pockets, as you saunter away.
tucked away in a small, up-scale restaurant in the heart of the beach, you and manon made quip remarks towards one-another. with your cheeks and ears flushed, you kept a lingering smile adorning your face. the moon hung low in the sky, as you two look out the window, your gazes' tracing the stars. a giggle escapes your breath, as your hand cups manon's jaw, gently drawing patterns on her cheeks.
shortly, though, the ghanaian girl dragged you to the waves, swinging you around in exhilaration. sitting down on the sand, you two ease against one-another's touch, interlacing hands. the beach ripples crashing harshly contrast your guys' gentle touches, the dark, midnight-hued water glimmering.
"thank you for this date," manon murmurs, her voice barely above a whisper, as she swallows a lump down her throat, "maybe i'll actually touch-up your tattoo now." her words elicit a giggle from you, as you nudge her.
feeling the breezy, cold air hitting against your skin, you take deep breathsâonly for the ghanaian girl to cover your shoulders in her jacket. a wide, animated grin plasters her face, making you swoon in endearment.
"what was the crown for anyway?" you mumble, turning your head to face the girl, as you raise your hand up, your new crown tattoo now in sight. she shakes her head, her gaze softening.
"it's like, a light of hopeâjust a small touch from me to you," manon rasps out, leaning further towards you, as her eyes were practically of hearts while etched on your lips. your lips fall open, as the ghanaian girl presses her lips against yours, her touch firm and precise.
her hands find its way to your hips, your breath hitching. a playful glint appears in manon's eyes, as she nips at your lower lip, her kisses fervent and magnetic. your hands meet her neck, the ghanaian girl shivering at the trifling lace of your cold hands.
"i better get that touch-up for my tattoo if it fades away," you playfully assert, now straddling the girl's lap, as you cup her cheeks, tenderly squeezing them. before you could press your impatient lips against manon's, her phone blares out a ding.
dani: you forgot to turn the lights off today.
xo tatted all over her body, yeah (body, yeah)
she just wanna roll, and i don't mind it, yeah

Glass Houses: Jack Thurlow x Y/N One-Shot Series PRT 27

Jack goes back into treatment without fighting Dr. Carty. He suspects he'll be in for a long stay but they decide to only keep him for little under a full month. They felt like too much time in the facility could set him back in the other areas to which he's improved. Once he got back on his medications, his body physically felt different. He felt like he was getting back to a content calmness in his skin again. The stitches had healed over and every time he looked at them he felt mortified thinking about what had happened with Y/n.
Dr. Carty had made mention to him y/n agreeing to let him add her as a contact. He hadn't received any calls or visits from her but he didn't expect to.
"What are you worried about Jack?" Carty pulled him out of his head.
"I guess whether or not I can fix things with Y/n or not. I feel like she's smart enough to know that she doesn't need the additional stress in her life." Jack explained sadly.
"Well then it's best to develop a plan in advance to deal with both outcomes." He informed.
"How?" Jack asked confused.
"Well if she doesn't want to forgive you or doesn't think she can handle you, you need to accept that and find a way to move forward. You can't make people stay Jack. People will come and go but you can't let that destroy you. You have to be okay with being alone." Dr. Carty had a point, as bummed out as it made him.
"I mean I know that on some level I just don't know if I'll bounce back that fast if she writes me off. I might need to like...check back in?" Jack scrunches his face.
"If you ever feel like you can't handle things on your own, you know you can check back in. That doesn't mean this place is forever, you're learning that now." He explained. Jack looked down at his hands.
"Have you thought about what happens if she does forgive you?" Carty asked seeing Jack sit back in his chair.
"I mean...I guess shit can't like go back to normal, can it?" Jack said unsure of what he was going to do in either instance.
"No it can't. The best thing you can do is acknowledge your behavior, not make any promises that it won't happen again because you know this is for life and just try your best to communicate your struggles with her." Jack laughed darkly.
"What woman wouldn't want an absolute headcase?" Jack asked making Dr. Carty sigh.
"Jack, you can't consider yourself less than because you have mental illnesses. If you continue to do that, you will constantly live in a state of self deprecating negativity. Just be yourself. Stop letting these drugs, these diagnoses define who you are." There was a knock at the door and one of the hospital admins came in.
"Mr. Thurlow's ride is here." She said softly. Carty gave her a nod and she exited as he looked Jack over.
"Are you ready?" He asked and Jack nodded.
"I'm ready. Thank you for...everything." Jack shook Carty's hand and he nodded his head.
"Focus on the list of things you wanted to accomplish once you got back home Jack. Don't get distracted." He pressed as Jack walked out of his office. The ride back to the house felt longer than the ride to the hospital but when he enters the house, it feels different. He drops the bag by the steps and looks around, seeing the kitchen has been cleaned up and their is a note on the counter.
"I cleaned up the house so you didn't come home to a bunch of blood and shit. You also had a ton of things dropped on the porch so I moved them to the attic. I got groceries Friday when the Doctor told me you were coming home. I'm working night shift this week so please don't go to the house."
Jack pulled out his phone and sat on the couch for what seemed like two hours trying to figure out what to text her. He finally settled on
Jack: I'm home...thanks for cleaning the house and filling the fridge.
He regretted it the moment he pressed send. She was quick to respond though.
Y/n: No problem.
Her response was simple. He wished she would have given him more to work with.
Jack: Do you think maybe you'll have time to talk sometime this week?
Her response didn't come as quickly as the last. He started smoking a cigarette on the porch and started pacing.
Y/n: Look Jack, if this talk is going to be full of reminders of how fucked you are in the head and how you warned me that I deserve better or whatever self deprecating bullshit..you can save it. What I really deserve is a sincere apology and what the fuck reason you decided to come off your meds. I don't want to have a conversation without real accountability.
Jack read the response and felt like he still had a chance to salvage this. He felt like she was giving him an opportunity to really think about what he was going to say the next time they were together.
Jack: Okay.
His answer was simple and direct. He was listening to what she wanted from him and he wanted to be ready for that conversation once they had it. He owed her all of those things and he wanted to give them to her when she was ready to receive them. Until then, he grabbed something from the fridge and climbed the stairs to his bedroom where a brand new, color-coded pill case sat with a little white bow on it. He smiled to himself before taking the bow off and filling it with his meds.

PUNDIT PICKS: THE CREAM of the Crop - continued... [My Favorite SONGS of 2024 (*so far*)]
ICYMI, my favorite album list from Jan. - Aug.: https://therappundit.tumblr.com/post/763889760563576832/pundit-picks-the-cream-of-the-crop-my-favorite
***Please note: the selections on this list had to have dropped by 8/31/24, FYI***
Yikes. This has been a doozy of a week, to say the least.
But the show must go on, and back in June/July I began compiling what would become my ongoing âbest ofâ list for 2024, with every intention of dropping said list by the end of the summer...aaaaaand it is now October. In my defense, it has often felt like summer over the past few weeks (just one of many red flags to rise that potentially indicate that the world is finally ready to shake us off)...so is it that crazy to be dropping a "summer blowout" list as we sail into Thanksgiving territory???
Meh. Don't answer that - let's just get to the music. Here are my favorite rap SONGS of 2024, ***as of Labor Day weekend***....
MORE OF MY FAVORITE SONGS: "place i rep" by Remy Banks, "Banded Up" by Chief Keef feat. Tierra Whack, "Complications" by Reiiki APOLLO, "HOO" by LIFEOFTHOM, "Bonnet" by TiaCorine, "ALAMODE" by CJ Fly & Stoic, "Type Shit" by Future & Metro Boomin feat. 24. "12:50 in New York" by Chuckyy
(Probably my favorite flow in rap right now, the "new school" Chicago drill MC is blessed with a delivery that I can only describe as a "menacing auctioneer flow".)
23. "Amanda Seals" by ReallyHiiiM feat. B.A Badd & Boldy James
(Concrete hard ReallyHiiim beat, featuring some classic basement Boldy and B.A Badd vibes.)
22. "MESCALINE" by LaRussell & CAM CORTEZ
(LaRussell is one of the hardest working rappers in hip-hop today, so he has had plenty of high points in 2024, but the way he bounces over this "Grindin"-esque beat puts this joint over the top. LaRussell brings a breath of positivity into his music that the west coast sound is really benefting from right now.)
21. "Ray Vaughn" by Ray Wop
(Ray's recent run has added some teeth back to TDE that they lost when Kendrick moved on.)
20. "INFORMATION AGE" by No Label
(A NYC based crew that you absolutely need to keep on your radar.)
19. "SINCE I WAS LIL" by JasonMartin & DJ Quik feat. Curren$y, Bun B & Jay Worthy
(Classic westside head nodder with veteran reps from other cities. Dope album from Quik & the artist formerly known as Problem, if you haven't peeped it yet.)
18. "MLK" by Myaap & Nedarb
(Myaap has been one of my favorite artists out of Milwaukee since last year's "h.t.s. (Hit That Shit)", her records are fun as hell.)
17. "PAYMEAGRIP" by Ovrkast. & Cardo Got Wings
(His star keeps rising, as the barriers between sub-genres in rap music continue to fall. Ovrkast. has already proven to be one of the most impactful young producers doing it today.)
16. "Match That" by BRISTACKZ
(Another attention grabbing artist out of Milwaukee, rapping like a trap Missy Elliot, experimental in a similar vein as Certified Trapper, and like Trapper, Bristackz records might miss the mark...but when she hits, she hits real hard.)
15. "I'm G (OMG)" by Blu & Shafiq Husayn
(Funky, hard joint - with a perfect Easter egg of a movie sample worked into the hook.)
14. "Dream Blunt Rotation" by Rich Jones & Sleep Sinatra/SINAI. feat. AJ Suede, Qari & J.U.S
(As smooth of a dope posse cut as you're going to hear, coming from a diverse collection of some of the underground scene's finest.)
13. "Trippin" - Bossman DLow
(As contagious as mainstream rap can get today, and I'm still laughing at "I pullin' up in a what the fuck kinda car is that?")
12. "SONJE" by Mach-Hommy. feat. Hephzibah
(I went back and forth trying to choose which Mach song to include here, but in my mind this luscious instrumental best represents the strong vibes that run across #RICHAXXHAITIAN.)
11. "Rocafella Chain" by Grafh feat. Freeway, Peedi Crakk & Memphis Bleek
(A dope Roc-A-Fella themed posse cut is not what I expected to hear in 2024, but I couldn't be happier that it exists.)
10. "Gank Move" by Big Hit, Hit-Boy & The Alchemist feat. HitgirlLENA
youtube
(Hits that sweet spot between smooth west coast rider music and underground grime, and when that combination works well, there aren't many soundscapes capable of yielding a stronger outcome. This album's aesthetic is peak chemistry between Hit-Boy & The Alchemist, and I hope that all of the challenges facing Big Hit today end up in his rearview soon, because this talented family still has a lot to share with the world.)
9. "Psalm" by 7xvethegenius feat. Jae Skeese
youtube
(If 7xvethegenius wasn't high up on your radar before I sure hope she is now. 7xve packs all of the skills of a traditional "conscious MC" without sounding the least bit trapped within those constraints, she's an exceptional writer that knows how to corral the thoughts of a woman that's trying to excel in rap music in 2024, and that in and of itself, provides endless material. 7xvethegenius is the true MVP on Drumwork's team..yup, I said it!)
8. "Lost Angel" by Blu & Evidence
youtube
("This album is dedicated to L.A., and everybody who helped me get home, every step of the way." Blu and Evidence's Los Angeles album is easily one of the best rap albums of 2024, and even though it's a skip-free ride that showcases Blu's gifts as a presence on the mic and Ev's - somehow still underappreciated - incredible mastery over the production of this album, it's this loosie that the duo dropped earlier this year that perfectly captures Blu's heartbreak, and subsequent rise from the ashes of his painful past to release some of the best art of his already impressive career.)
7. "Yea Yea" by Star Bandz
youtube
(With certain records...you just know it as soon as you hear it. The beat, the swagger of the MC, thay MC's voice...on "Yea Yea" every box is checked. And Chicago's young rising star, appropriately named Star Bandz, has breakout potential written all over her.)
6. "expensive piss" - shemar & Child Actor
(Hazy, unrestrained, and representing some of the best indy music out there today, capturing some of the best traits of the boom-bap era but adding they're own twist to it, the combination of shemar and Child Actor yields a sound that I hope to hear a lot more of in the future.)
5. "The Harder They Come" by YUNGMORPHEUS & Alexander Spit
(The teeth of YUNGMORPHEUS's pen paired with the soothing palette of Alexander Spit, hit me in a special place when I first heard this song earlier in the year. The whole album they did together is great, but this one has stayed with me all year long as one of the strongest examples of hip-hop music being in great hands today.)
4. "Collection Plate" by Ka
youtube
(Still shocked to be writing this as the last time to ever be discussing a new Ka record. If The Thief Next to Jesus is to be remembered as the Brownsville poet's swan song, what a bittersweet beautiful farewell to behold. "Collection Plate" was the immediate favorite for me, as it captures Ka's knack for simple but highly effective hooks, sharply written verses without one word wasted, all of it dragged over a rolling organ that paints the picture of a Brooklyn evangelist better than anyone else ever could. 52 years was far from long enough, but thank you for all of the art you gave to the world while you were here, Kaseem.)
3. "Free Jesus" by Mike Shabb feat. Navy Blue
youtube
(Not totally sure of what the song means, but I felt it deeply from the moment that Shabb posted a snippet from the studio with Navy. Iâd like to think that itâs a statement about how tales from the streets can escalate to God-like levels of exaggeration, and the fragile line separating the exaltation of idols from the realityâŚbut whatever it means to you, itâs a potent attention grabber.)
2. "Zayre" by Previous Industries [Open Mike Eagle, Video Dave, STILL RIFT]
(One of many standout records from this trio, but for my money's worth, this joint captures what is so special about the whole album: nostalgia for "the way things used to be" has never sounded more peaceful and content with the present.)
1. "Doves" by Armand Hammer feat. Benjamin Booker
youtube
("It's cold again..." Truth be told, I didn't think Armand Hammer's 2023 AOTY We Buy Diabetic Test Strips needed another song to make if that much stronger, but here we are. Maybe the greatest songs that I have ever heard added to an album long after it dropped, "Doves" captures both the beauty and pain of loss. It would be a bleak song as cold as the heart of winter if it wasn't coming from the powerful duo of billy woods and ELUCID, who excel at showing us glimpses of their hearts shining through dark clouds. And the crackle of that Benjamin Booker hook takes this moment to another level.)

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 05/10/2024 (The Weeknd & Playboi Carti, Nines Quits While He's Ahead)
For a sixth week straight, Sabrina Carpenter remains at #1 on the UK Singles Chart with âTasteâ - weâve got a week with several debuts from Nines today so⌠a riveting line-up, Iâm sure. Welcome back to REVIEWING THE CHARTS!
content warning: language, brief mentions of gang violence and self-harm
Rundown
As always, our episode starts with the notable dropouts, which are songs exiting the UK Top 75 - the region I cover - after five weeks there or a peak in the top 40. This week, we bid adieu to âGuy for Thatâ by Post Malone featuring Luke Combs, and thatâs pretty much it aside from this weekâs one big cause for celebration: all three Oasis songs that were charting, those being âLive Foreverâ, âDonât Look Back in Angerâ and âWonderwallâ, have excited - at least for now - from the top 75.
This really is a bit of a dire week, especially when it comes to the actual content of our new arrivals, but itâs even evident in the songs gaining, as we donât have any re-entries but we do see boosts for old songs like âBye Bye Byeâ by *NSYNC at #56 and âYellowâ by Coldplay at #55 - will be interesting to see if this stays or get replaced by a Moon Music cut. Then we have few gains in general, but what we do have includes âFreeâ by Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding at #46, âTony Soprano 2â by Nines at #44 (more on him later), âDiet Pepsiâ by Addison Rae at #22 and thatâs pretty much it outside of a surge for âHeavy is the Crownâ by Linkin Park off of the debut to #18 - itâs not a good song, but it is interesting enough, itâs definitely got more energy than what else is here this week.
As for our top five, we have Sabrina Carpenter bring âPlease Please Pleaseâ to #5, with âDie with a Smileâ by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars at #4, then more Sabrina with âEspressoâ at #3, followed by Chappell Roanâs âGood Luck, Babe!â at #2 and of course, âTasteâ at the very top. Now for a perhaps less interesting week than it should be, but still a handful of new songs to think about.
New Entries
#73 - âNEW DROPâ - Don Toliver
Produced by Coleman, Dez Wright, Psymun, Wheezy and Brian Yepes
In June, Travis Scott protĂŠgĂŠ Don Toliver released HARDSTONE PSYCHO, an album that has more ambition and aspiration to be interesting than it actually shows up in its execution. For a while, this specific album cut has been having more traction, presumably due to TikTok or some other virality as there does not appear to be a single push or big feature here. I did not actually get to discuss the album on this series, but it did grow on me over time just through throwing enough different paints at a canvas to eventually make some complementing colour scheme. âNEW DROPâ is not one of those, primarily because it is so unfocused. The tight drill of âATTITUDEâ that finds such a specific tone it struggles to deviate from, the hook overload of songs like âTORE UPâ or âGLOCKâ and even the closing rock ballad âHARDSTONE NATIONAL ANTHEMâ all find themselves committing to the bit, so to speak, seemingly aware that there is a gimmickry to their musical or lyrical ideas and running with it. The third disc of the album is where everything really throws me for a loop, especially in our charting song, âNEW DROPâ, which lyrically is about⌠who cares? Iâm pretty sure itâs about a threesome, but it could not matter less - Don murmurs through the chaos of his pre-chorus-adjacent moments that tip off overly long, messy verses that canât pit themsselves to a flow. Even when near-yelling, he fails to enunciate in all his Auto-Tuned jabbering, but at least heâs clear on the chorus which uses a slick vocal loop and the makings of a house beat that too quickly deviate into a trap dirge and unnecessarily eerie soundscapes for whatever remains of the content. A squeaky loop appears in the left channel for no reason, he emulates Kid Cudiâs least interesting ad-lib if all the humming wasnât enough aping for you, and you do start to wonder what this song is actually trying to be, with no thematic construct allowing for these beats to constantly switch or for the more menacing or playful elements to come in and out. Perhaps it would be a cooler execution of an okay idea in better hands.
#69 - âStars Will Alignâ - Kygo and Imagine Dragons
Produced by Kygo
Kygo and Imagine Dragons collaborate once again in the year of our Lord 2019 - I mean, 2024 - and itâs about as serviceable as youâd expect. Kygo has always been more cinematic with his whooshing EDM, I actually like the way the rising house percussion slides into a smashing gated 80s drum, but Dan Reynolds is uncharacteristically out of it here. You may not need to fully go into rock belting mode for a song like this, but heâs damn near whimpering, especially as he continues to go into the falsetto at the end of so many lines, with him being so absent from the songâs first build and most drops coming off so strangely. It almost feels like a song was written and a house production was made, with little communication between the two camps, and they were just slashed together to try and work. Once Reynolds can bring in harmonies and acoustic fumbles, he feels more at home, but thereâs still two very basic ideas combating for space perhaps too kindly! Instead of filling up too much space, not much space is filled at all, and the two elements barely coexist in the first place. Like a lot of this week, it is somewhat lifeless and definitely refusing to make the most use of its ideas or artists, but at least it doesnât embrace that lifelessness as a character trait or appeal, more just a way to flag its way into EasyJet adverts, which⌠is still a purpose I suppose.
#65 - âCold Hearted World 3â - Nines featuring Marnz Malone
Produced by mike allure and J.B. Productionz
I feel like Nines has got to have some form of cult-like appeal Iâve just yet to understand, because for years heâs shown little in the way of lyrical substance or vocal charisma over what is usually pretty cheap, dime-a-dozen production, not often even being that close to trends of the time, since his flow is a sloppy slow burn more than anything. Yet he still charts more consistently than most, and we have two tracks here from his most recent album, Quit While Youâre Ahead, acting somewhat as a swan song of sorts as it debuts at #4 on the albums chart. Maybe there is a new sense of consciousness or just actual life injected into this album? Well, if the tracks we have to review from it are any indication, that simply canât be the case.
Thankfully, at least for this track, Nines isnât really the main point of interest, but instead, guest rapper Marnz Malone, a Birmingham rapper who sounds similar to Nines but has a tighter flow to accommodate a chiller delivery over soulful beats, or at least is the case on his other tracks in this trilogy. Similar to Ninesâ âTony Sopranoâ series, the âCold Hearted Worldâ tracks are intended to be one long, more lyrical verse, except these are typically over liquidy R&B samples, and Malone has a bit more intrigue to his absolutely defeated cadence that doesnât stop him from going in for up to three minutes about his reality, with less stupid lines than a Nines verse, typically. The two worlds collide on a track very similar to the other instalments, just this time with Ninesâ clunkier flow just ruining whatever vibe you could get from the beat. The topics are very much as youâd expect, but at least Nines brings some cuter 2000s rap references alongside a really ugly, cheap trap skitter and a vocal mix for Malone that sounds frankly like it was recorded in jail⌠which oddly adds much more to his stoic bars about how closely intertwined he is with gang violence that itâs a core part of his identity. I love the rhyme scheme in the second half, it takes his verse to very interesting places, and I generally think Marnz Malone delivers here, but this may be the worst beat in the trilogy and Nines feeds off this song really lazily, preventing him from really shining⌠I know, thereâs a certain irony in using that term here, but I just wish I could enjoy this more or at least see more elements of this song in Ninesâ catalogue to help explain the appeal.
#59 - âLights Camera Actionâ - Kylie Minogue
Produced by Lewis Thompson
Ironically, if thereâs someone to count on this week, itâs a decades-into-her-career Kylie Minogue still keeping up with the trends on a single for her upcoming Tension II, really maintaining her focus on these heavily-processed future house tracks from in-demand producers like Lewis Thompson. This particular song is just about looking good, feeling good and name-dropping fashion brands and designers doing so. It really is a Kylie Minogue brag rap in some ways, and it is once again completely serviceable. I will give this the edge of having a really riveting pre-drop with the rise of the synth strings and sparse, quieter claps before that tunnelling synth digs into a bombastic final drop and a rubbery bass that is really worth the wait. The rest of the song is fine, but much more distant and perhaps less applicable lyrically than her more universal recent hits, and that may be why it couldnât crack the top 40 since this doesnât have the same all-encompassing sexy club energy as say, a âTensionâ, âPadam Padamâ or even âDancingâ. Itâs still perfectly fun for a late-era Minogue bop though, and for this week, thatâs really something.
#39 - âGoing Crazyâ - Nines
Produced by Karlos, Jacob Manson and J.B. Productionz
Maybe Nines was right to mention the 2000s rappers because I do tend to forget how closely his âthugs need loveâ or breakup tracks get to tracks from that era of that ilk, including an overly loud chipmunk sample that cascades over blocky drums, an uncredited female guest vocalist on the hook, awkward skits to book-end their relationship troubles and awkward sex-raps. He even directly quotes the dated references from Yeâs âThrough the Wireâ⌠why the line about Tom Cruise and not any of the actually timeless funny lyrics on that song? Ninesâ general sloppiness has always showed up the worst on his âfor the ladiesâ jams and LEILAH canât save this from just being lazy and somewhat like heâs trying to revisit or dress up as a character he canât really pull off. It is at least something with a soul, however.
#7 - âTimelessâ - The Weeknd and Playboi Carti
Produced by Pharrell Williams, Ojivolta, Twisco, MIKE DEAN, BBYKOBE and BL$$D
The credits to this song read like it got left over from the Donda sessions, and fittingly, it is just as lifeless, being Abelâs worst song in years. The intent of this song was to be a massive smash that lives up to the hype and anticipation awaited by fans following its performance at a concert in Brazil, accumulating success based on the idea of getting a âgrailâ officially released, cleared and finished this soon. The problem here is that much like what a lot of Carti fans will hype up, this is utterly disposable and theyâve been latching onto substanceless drivel that hopes you plug into the idea that itâs just âhypnoticâ, âvibesâ, itâs just different, man⌠when itâs really not. Abel mumbles his way through a sprawling intro before the rote trap drums clunk in and completely overpower the vague sense of atmosphere created by MIKE DEANâs rainy synths - we donât even get a typical Pharrell four-count, and whilst I tend to love his production, when working with rappers recently, he can make very stiff, robotic trap slogs, and this fits perfectly within that category. Carti uses the gimmick of changing his voice to cover a verse full of absolutely nothing - thereâs some fun to how he coughs in and out of the baby voice - whilst Abel decides to remark that heâs timeless on a song that does sound as such, but not because it will last generations or that itâs a vintage-sounding track. Rather, itâs âtimelessâ because it seems to be purely for the moment, made ephemerally for the one last hurrah of a long career combined with Cartiâs memelord status. As a song, this could have been absolutely anything. It doesnât matter to them⌠or you. Unless you love hearing Mr. Tesfaye croon about how if he was you, heâd cut his wrists, before DEAN sprays his synth ejaculate all over the outro to whisper some character into a mindless void of non-character. I know this is an easy vibe for Abel and Pharrell to tap into, Iâm just disappointed that for such an important project as Hurry Up Tomorrow, that theyâve decided to fully play into a lack of personality, a quality the two have otherwise held proudly onto. I am aware that all of this week has been lacking in interest or character, but it digs the harshest when you know that they know theyâre feeding you sludge.
Conclusion
Probably the oldest of these acts, Kylie Minogue, is sounding the most alive, so she grabs Best of the Week for âLights Camera Actionâ, even if it is just pretty good. As for the opposite side of the spectrum⌠Playboi Carti and The Weeknd are firmly the Worst of the Week for âTimelessâ and, remarkably, Iâll give it to Nines: he sticks to an idea, but on âNEW DROPâ, Don Toliver doesnât so he bags the Dishonourable Mention. Maybe I really am getting old now⌠or is it the Opium kids who are wrong? Well, we should see Coldplay mooning us on the horizon, alongside potential hits from Perrie Edwards and Ella Henderson, so weâll be exchanging safe for safe. Joy. For now, thank you for reading, long live Cola Boyy, and Iâll see you next week!

here we go, iâm just gonna hope i can make some internet friends.
so,
my name is tanner. iâm a bloke iâm single af and married đ iâm based in australia. (and no, homie we cannot tell what happens and who dies because weâre one day ahead of u americans.) i was born on april 2nd , 2008. (omg my birthday is in 11 days .) iâm OBSESSED with olivia rodrigo (if you couldnât tell already) and jenna ortega. iâm mainly gonna post anything i feel like on here (yes i will do posts abt liv and jenna) anyway, i listen to heaps of music and most of its a combination of rap and pop music. i like to listen to olivia rodrigo, sofaygo, playboi carti, kerser, chillinit, huskii, jack harlow, freewyo, travis scott, don toliver, and heaps more!! i like a few movies. i used to be shyt scared of scary movies and now i canât get enough of them. like, i watched scream 5 like august/october last year and i loved scary movies after that (and omg scream 6 was amazing) i recently watch scream 6 & scream 1. (the original.) and theyâre all really good. i watched scream 6 with my aunty, nan & cousin. when it started i got like, heaps of adrenaline (please donât think iâm crazy.) i play a few video games. i used to play a whole lot of fortnite. honestly died in me o really canât get back into that game anymore. i play minecraft. and a lot of car games. i run a jenna page on instagram and soon gonna hopefully start a liv page ⥠my favourite songs rn are: jealousy jealousy by liv, got damn! by faygo, never seen me fall (ft. jean.) by kerser, mama by rudy mancuso, servo by huskii, and kids are growing up by the kid laroi (hopefully he drops wjh soon đż) iâm currently studying street art, money counts, and forensic science in school. i donât have many friends anymore, i mean. i talk to some of my old friends from primary school. (which is like 3) i also think thats the main reason iâm antisocial and always in my own world all the time. iâve always had a small circle of friends. like if i could, i still wouldnât want a heap of friends. i recently cut someone off (bc they werenât the most honest and nicest person. they also believed rumours that werenât true.) which makes my circle even smaller. one of my best friends would be my cousin for the most part. like theyâre cool. and i can trust them lol. which itâs usually the opposite with most people. i was in my first relationship from Sunday, October 30th it ended on Saturday 28th if January this year. i wonât lie, i loved her i just personally think iâm better off by myself. thatâs all iâma say, let me know if you have any questions / concerns. :)

TWISTED CHARACTERS AND THE MUSIC I THINK THEY'D LIKE! (heartslabyul ver.)
i know this is an x reader blog but my tumblr been dry ash lately (cause I don't usually write things that aren't requests) and this is lowkey filler YALL PLEASE SEND REQUESTS. this is also like suspend your disbeliefs in these hcs these artists exist in the TWST universe and stuff haha (edit 6/22/24- edited riddle and trey cause i was on sum at 2am while writing them) -isa<3
ACE TRAPPOLA
I don't think Ace would be a musichead at all (you know, the type of people who lock in when their favorite artists are about to drop an album and stream that shit the day it drops) but I def see him as the type to primarily consume pop, rap, trap, that typa stuff. He strikes me as the kind of guy who likes artists like Drake (pre Kendrick beef LMFAO), Eminem, Post Malone, Carti (though he sucksss), etc. just very consumable hip-hop artists everyone knows. Because he isn't that much of a musichead, he's one of those people who are quick to make assumptions about genres and not try to listen to things outside of their comfort zone. You know, the type of guy that would call Billie Eilish and Melanie Martinez goth/emo. very close minded unfortunately but thats okay we still love him
DEUCE SPADE
Deuce in my opinion would be more musically open minded than Ace, but like by 15%. He's not a stan or anything. Being an honor student doesn't just mean locking in for assignments, but it also means giving everything a shot and not knocking something before you try it. I think he'd have a similar music taste to Ace though. He'd fuck with Post Malone too, but his Spotify wrapped includes artists like SZA, Frank Ocean, Pinkpantheress, etc. Mainly the alternative RNB artists. I also don't have any reason to back this up but I feel like he'd have an embarrassingly soft spot for boy bands, it don't matter where they come from. America, The UK... South Korea.. LMAO IDK I just think he'd fw One Direction, BTS, NSYNC, etc.
CATER DIAMOND
I don't know if this is very well known in the fandom at all, maybe it is, I haven't been on twst tumblr for long, but Cater canonly skateboards. And because of that, I always kind of believed Cater was the type of guy to like pop-punk, nu-metal, just a lot of rock essentially. Unrelated but I also think he'd have the most expressive room (aside from Rook and his Neige/Vil shrine of a room) with like band posters everywhere and gaming console shit YK!! He'd be into pop-punk bands like Sum-41, Blink-182, Good Charlotte, early Fall Out Boy, and some early classics like Ramones. And for nu-metal Korn and Linkin Park. just some shit to feel cool listening to while you're doing triple double backflips on the board or whatever skateboarders be doing LMAO?? I'm more of a rollerskater girl myself.
RIDDLE ROSEHEARTS
a lot of what I see about Riddle on this app are "you know, his mom sheltered him from the outside world and prolly forced him to listen to a lot of classical music so thats what he only consumes!" and to some extent, i agree. the mf would probably play Mozart and Beethoven while he vacuums the dorms common room idk. But I also feel like.. He's been away from his mother long enough and is old enough to take that pole out of his ass and see what the rest of the outside world is doing. you can't tell me once he discovers what youtube/spotify/apple music is he WOULDN'T enjoy alt pop and psychedelic rock. lord help the heartslabyul dorm the only thing they would know for the next 5 months are laufey, arctic monkeys (AM era), and lana del rey (ultraviolence era) + The Beatles, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, The Kinks, etc. he just strikes me as a lover of them slow jams.
TREY CLOVER
honestly, trey wouldn't be that much of a music listener. he'd have some playing in the background while he's baking ofc, but having headphones in while studying or walking to class? No, it's okay. he's fine with the silence. I imagine him to have similar music taste to Riddle. He likes Elton John, early Nirvana, Queen, The Rolling Stones, etc. nothing else to really say!
i'll do savanaclaw next in the morning but don't forget 2 send requests guys. make sure they're mainly malleus, vil and jamil /hj - isa<3

My Favorite Albums of 2020, 20-11
20. Porridge Radio, Every Bad
Favorite Tracks: Sweet | Born Confused | Lilac
I wish I found this album earlier, because after only a few listens it quickly jumped to one of my favorite albums of the year. This album is post-everything, incorporating aspects of punk, garage rock, metal, and indie into a bundle of frustratingly modern angst similar to Mannequin Pussyâs 2019 album Patience. Lead singer Dana Margolin deftly moves from quiet, dark singing into full on screaming, representing the difficulties of masquerading as fully-hinged when itâs obvious that everyone is, at least to some extent, totally unhinged. Every Bad is an album of shielding mantras and piercing emotions; itâs for anyone whoâs sought clarity by reciting self-help book affirmations but ripped the pages to shreds right after. Every Bad exists in the deeply relatable space of desperately trying to listen to your mind and simultaneously resisting the clamoring pangs of the heart. The beauty of this album is that it doesnât present itself in a sense of futility, but rather that of intent: anger and calm are important steps in processing trauma, and any recognition of that represents progress.
19. Lil Uzi Vert, Eternal Atake / Lil Uzi Vert vs. the World 2
Favorite Tracks: Lo Mein | Moon Relate | Yessirskii
The machine of hip-hop hype has become bigger than itself, a serpent eating its own tail. Major releases for artists like Travis Scott, Lil Uzi Vert, Playboi Carti, Kanye West, and most notoriously Frank Ocean blast through a roller coaster of twists and turns involving missed release dates, cryptic social media actions, leaked songs purchased through online âgroup buys,â and ravenous fans who spend most of their life on the Internet, setting both the anticipation for the album and the expectations for new content at unimaginable and arguably unattainable highs. The artist is left with a single critical shot to slay the hype monster, with first impressions largely dominating the public discourse: Travis Scottâs ASTROWORLD soared him to rap titan status, allowing him to sell stupid amounts of overpriced merchandise (like $60 T-shirts commemorating buying a meal at McDonaldâs between September and October of 2020), Frank Oceanâs critical darling Blonde (and please donât forget Endless) topped Album of the Decade lists solidifying him as a musical legend, Kanye Westâs JESUS IS KING confirmed his decline as an artist, blemishing his legacy and leaving fans clamoring for the album-that-never-was Yandhi, and most recently Playboi Cartiâs Whole Lotta Red found Internet kids immediately hating on the album on social media as a commemorative âI Was Thereâ stamp due to its left-field sound.
In the case of Uzi, Eternal Atake and the subsequent deluxe/sequel album Lil Uzi Vert Vs. The World 2 land somewhere between ASTROWORLD and Whole Lotta Red. Uzi delivered two extremely high quality projects, the second of which was made up of curated snippets and guest features that fans had been demanding. While no individual song across these twin albums reaches nearly the height that âXO Tour Llif3â did in 2017 (whether due to COVID preventing any of the songs from making club rounds or simply that none of them caught on), I canât help but feel like most of the fun of these hip-hop releases now lies in the anticipation, memes, frustration, and community leading up to the drop. Artists now have a very peculiar relationship to their fans where the balance of power and influence over their work can literally rest in the keyboards of a handful of vocal teenagers. In that sense, Uziâs ride wasnât a roller coaster, but a tilt-a-whirl: an exhilarating journey, but one without too many surprises in the end.
18. Fiona Apple, Fetch the Bolt Cutters
Favorite Tracks: I Want You to Love Me | Newspaper | Cosmonauts
I donât think Iâm a good enough writer to do this album justice with words. The only reason itâs not higher up for me is because this is a list of my personal favorites. Just know the praise is completely deservedâitâs the best album of 2020.
17. Sufjan Stevens, The Ascension
Favorite Tracks: Die Happy | Make Me an Offer I Cannot Refuse | Tell Me You Love Me
This album isâŚa lot. I had to listen to it over two sessions, already floored on my first listen by the time I got to my favorite song on the album âDie Happyâ (itâs only six songs in). I was in a, um, fully altered headspace when I heard that song for the first time, melted into the couch as the music combined with my very being: when the songâs only lyric is âI want to die happy,â it can be overwhelming. I saved the rest for my trip to the Catskills, having no idea Stevens recorded the album there until I started writing this (coincidentally, I also found out Shore by Fleet Foxes was recorded in the Catskills when I first listened to it on this same Catskills trip). After a long day of hiking and the others had gone to bed, I filled the bathtub in the cabin with hot water, threw some leftover glowsticks in there, and opened the window to the cool mountain air as I came down and listened to the rest of the album. The middle was admittedly slow, but the albumâs themes of reevaluating the American dream and existing in modern American society struck a chord. By utilizing the platitudes found throughout the album as anchor points, I was able to absorb every sound on The Ascensionâs richly detailed electronic instrumentation. This was most prevalent in the closer track, the 12-minute âAmerica.â I sat in the soft glow of the bath, thinking about my existence as a first-generation Filipino-American privileged enough to live in NYC and vacation in the Catskills with two fellow immigrant friends. The final platitude of the song lingered in my mind as I realized I was living out one version of the American dream:
Despite apparent prosperity, Stevens implores prudence: he does so by wrapping the chaos of existing in America in 2020â-including the exhaustion of constantly performing for an ever-expanding digital audience under the strict guidelines of a destructive society that often feels like itâs left its people behindâin a final call to God to make the world a better place. The Ascension is an album for a year thatâs felt like the end of the world, a desperate grasp for a glimmer of hope within a terrible darkness.
16. Yaeji, WHAT WE DREW
Favorite Tracks: WAKING UP DOWN | WHAT WE DREW | SPELL
Oh, how I dream of seeing Yaeji DJ a dark, sweaty club in a Bushwick warehouse (I know this is getting old, but I swear I wrote this one before the previous entries!). WHAT WE DREW is Yaejiâs first studio album after her breakout EP EP2, which featured infectious pop house tune âRaingurlâ and a techno-fied cover of Drakeâs âPassionfruit.â On WHAT WE DREW, Yaeji has her heart on her sleeve and is vibing on her own wavelength. From the momentum sheâs gained from her EPs and collaborations with big names like Charli XCX and Dua Lipa, she could have easily focused her efforts on making viral club bangers. Instead, she uses WHAT WE DREW as a canvas for self-expression and celebration of identity, which sets the basis for why I love this album. She fully embraces her background as a Korean-American, placing Korean track titles next to the English and singing and rapping in Korean throughout. The guest appearances are equally genuine, with Yaeji eschewing big name artists for friends from around the world, adding tilts of trap and J-pop to her already genre-defying sound. The airy but comforting abstract light greens and blues of the cover art match the mood of this album perfectly, as Yaeji includes lyrical hints of anxiety and struggle as a young Asian-American throughout her distinct production style. Itâs a bold choice for a genre that doesnât typically focus on lyricism: sheâs putting out dance music thatâs not just playful, but genuinely personal as well.
15. 100 gecs, 1000 gecs and the Tree of Clues
Favorite Tracks: ringtone (Remix) | hand crushed by a mallet (Remix) | toothless
All right, Iâll admit itâIâm a 100 gecs stan. When I first heard their music, I, like many others, was turned off by their abrasive, stupid sound. But over time, something clicked and I found myself loving it. It was hard to listen to anything else; I was addicted to the rapid-fire post-post-post-ironic tracks and felt like they sonically and lyrically captured Gen Z malaise in a way I had never heard before. When I found out about the remix album I was ecstatic; my hype was building after listening to the âHand Crushed by a Malletâ Fall Out Boy remix on a low quality YouTube video of a 100 gecs DJ set. When the âRingtone (Remix)â dropped as the first 2020 single for the album, I was floored at how well the guest features of Charli XCX, Rico Nasty, and Kero Kero Bonito worked togetherâitâs since become tied for my favorite song of the year. The rest of the remix album is more of a mixed bag, but at the very least offers interesting takes on an already ambitious and uniquely creative base that was the original 1000 gecs album. Their music is like getting the Star on Mario Kartâshort-lived, but intensely chaotic and fun. If new song âtoothlessâ is anything to go by, 100 gecs are just getting started and I canât wait to hear how they continue to define and refine the hyperpop genre.
14. HAIM, Women in Music Pt. III
Favorite Tracks: Los Angeles | The Steps | Iâve Been Down
This is HAIM at their realest: the sisters know exactly who they are and theyâre unafraid to show it throughout this album. While still firmly rooted in breezy West Coast 70âs rock, theyâve expanded further, reining in new sounds and styles into their music. The subject matter is personal but tongue-in-cheek, satirical and sincere at the same time. Listening to album opener âLos Angelesâ always put a smile on my face, listening to their musings on what a hometown can represent in oneâs life: just like family, a hometown has seen your ups and downs, and love it or hate it, it will always be a part of you. This album is self-aware in the same way you might burst into absurd laughter instead of woeful tears when everything in your life is falling apart: the Haim sisters have been there, and they want you to know youâre not alone.
13. Lianne La Havas, Lianne La Havas
Favorite Tracks:Â Canât Fight | Bittersweet | Paper Thin
This is straight up just a beautiful album. Itâs effortless and sparse, and La Havas simply lets her talents carry the album. Itâs folk and jazz and R&B but still uniquely her own sound; itâs wide and bold but still intimately personal, making it fittingly self-titled. I honestly canât say too much about it in terms of relating the themes to my current experience or listening to it because I really connected to it at this point in my life, but it was in constant rotation throughout the year because listening to it was like laying in a field and watching the clouds: simple appreciation of natural beauty.
12. Playboi Carti, Whole Lotta Red
Favorite Tracks:Â M3tamorphosis | Sky | Rockstar Made
This was by far my most anticipated album of the year. Iâve always been a huge Carti stan, downloading all of his leaks dating back to 2011. I love Carti because of his constant ability to defy convention and predict (define?) trends. When the SoundCloud era was coming up in 2016, Carti completely deconstructed any notion of traditional rap, reducing verses entirely to repeated ad-libs over wavy Piâerre Bourne beats. As mentioned previously, Carti garnered immense amounts of hype with the unexpectedly huge hit in the âKid Cudiâ (officially titled âPissy Pamper,â but I refuse to call it that) leak, utilizing an extremely weird âbaby voiceâ that was teased in Die Lit songs like âFlatBed Freestyleâ and totally went against traditional masculine notions youâd expect to hear in hip-hop. I was fully along for the ride, listening to all the leaks and gearing myself up for what was shaping up to be an evolved Die Lit. When Carti finally dropped Whole Lotta Red on Christmas (the audacity!) after months of teasing, he once again defied expectation and skipped over the baby voice era entirely, dropping an album of raspy punk-trap songs that sounded more like Hi-C or Drain Gang rather than the currently popular hip-hop sound that he helped put in place. While this departure of style immediately garnered internet hate from people who felt the need to involve themselves in the zeitgeist with reactionary social media posts, I realized that Carti once again delivered a sound I didnât know I wanted. I had been listening to a lot of â90âs/early 2000âs rock and electronic music in the month leading up to its release, curating an aesthetic genre that my roommate and I coined âtech grunge.â
As I listened to Whole Lotta Redâs anxiety-ridden and surprisingly candid lyrics about addiction, death, and vampiric personification over distorted bass and Sega Genesis-type beats, I concluded that Carti put out perhaps the first fully realized tech grunge album ever:
They canât understand me, Iâm talkinâ hieroglyphics (yeah) They canât understand me, Iâm talkinâ hieroglyphics I feel like Morpheus (what? What?), I feel like Morpheus (what? What?) I got my whole gang on some other shit I done changed my swag (swag, swag, what? What?)
I mean, come on.
If I have any critique of the album it would be that it could have been stronger as a double album, splitting the harder hitting tracks onto one album and the Die Lit 2 sounding tracks onto another (which I actually did in the Spotify playlists below), but nonetheless this album completely delivered for me with its infectious beats and sick aesthetic.
11. The Microphones, Microphones in 2020
Favorite Tracks: Just listen to the whole thing
The Glow, Pt. 2Â was one of the first albums I downloaded when I had an iPod in early high school and one of the albums that got me into indie music. Listening to this album alone under the stars was sublime and would probably have broken my top 10 if I heard it any earlier in the year. Itâs difficult to put out a good concept album, especially when it all sounds like one long song, but Phil Elverumâs released a project that never bores and never drags:Â Microphones in 2020Â is a slow burning, ambient experiment in storytelling, building up sonically as he recounts his own history from the early days of The Microphones through the period of his band Mount Eerie, which was defined by personal tragedy due to the death of his wife, into where he is right now in 2020, four years later. The 45-minute song brought me back to the many nights this past year that I spent ruminating in bed, looking back at old journal entries and photos, thinking about all thatâs led me to this point. The reflections would never fully revive the all-encompassing joy, sadness, pleasure, or pain that was felt in those past moments, but instead faded the memories with a sepia of sentimental nostalgia: a reminder of the transience of emotion and the elusiveness of meaning.

Glass Houses: Jack Thurlow x Y/N One-Shot Series PRT 25

Jack felt something inside of his chest snap when she slammed the door shut. He cut his eyes at Y/n and she put her hand up.
"Jack...you need to push through this okay. Dr. Carty will be here soon. Let's just go in the living room and-" She tried to guide him into the living room and he slapped her hand away from him.
"And what? Wait for them to come and throw me back in the hospital because you couldn't handle a few gashes?" Jack seethed at her and she took a deep breath. He was in a full on manic episode now and she knew things were only going to escalate.
"Jack, I'm here to help okay? I'm not going to fight you and I'm not going to hurt you. I care about you." She explained making him narrow his gaze.
"Oh you care about me? You aren't going to hurt me? You sound fucking pathetic." Jack spat.
"Jesus Christ we haven't even fucked and you're here like some love sick cunt who wants to save me from myself. Is that what you're doing Y/n? You gonna save me? You gonna fix me?" Jack started to approach Y/n now and she took a step backwards.
"Jack, I don't want to hurt you but if you come at me then you aren't going to like what happens." Y/n warned him. She knew that the worst parts of a manic episode could result in violence and she wasn't going to let that happen.
"You don't want to hurt me? Who are you kidding? You would love to hurt me just so you can try and fix me like you fix everyone in your life. Everyone except yourself of course." Jack was starting to get nasty and stepped closer once more.
"Jack please don't make me do something I'll regret." Y/n really wanted him to back off but he continued.
"You know I've known women like you my whole life. Think they're so fucking superior because they listen to everyone's fucked up problems, never addressing their own. Acting like listening and giving a pat on the back is somehow a fix all for the broken when they couldn't put together a four piece puzzle." Jack rolled his eyes and shoved a chair out of the way to stomp towards her.
"I'm not a project for you to fix up and make some stupid perfect boyfriend for you to show off to all your nurse friends or you cripple mother." The words came out so harshly and with such aggression that Y/n didn't hesitate to slap him across the face knocking him backwards. He rolled his tongue around in his mouth and tasted blood.
"I know you're fighting your demons right now but you aren't going to disrespect me for caring about you. You want to tell me how much of a piece of shit I am or how pathetic I am for getting off with my fucked up neighbor, go for it. Don't you dare talk about my fucking mom, Jack. This is your only warning." Y/n fought back as he spit blood on the floor not caring that they were inside.
"Is this you fixing me Y/n? You gonna slap the crazy out of me huh? You gonna beat it out of me?" Jack started slapping himself in the face, punching himself in the side of the head and Y/n grabbed his arms trying to stop him.
"JACK! STOP IT!" He tried fighting back and shoved her again so she would release his arms. He gripped her biceps in his hands and squeezed hard.
"GO AHEAD! FIX ME! SAVE ME! KILL ME!" Jack screamed until Y/n plowed her knee into his balls as hard as she could. Jack dropped to the floor with a hard thud. He wretched a few times from the pain and coughed trying to catch his breath.
"Don't get up! Stay down okay?" Y/n had angry tears in her eyes as she stayed on the defense.
"You...bitch...you stupid...fucking...bitch." He breathed in agony.
"Yeah well...takes one to know one I guess." Y/n looked at her arm where he had grabbed her and it was already bruising. She cursed under her breath. Jack started trying to say something but the coughing kept him from forming sentences.
"It's probably best that you stop talking until you're back behind the wheel and can communicate with me because the next step from a knee to the balls is a taser." Y/n threatened as he rolled to sit against the wall. He kept his eyes staring at her darkly.
"I hate you...I hate you so much. Why did you make me believe I could have something normal? You stupid fucking bitch." He shook his head letting angry tears roll down his face.
"You should have just let me die. You should have just let me DIE!" He wailed as the door opens to a tall man carrying a medical bag with an EMT right behind him.
"I'm Dr. Carty-" He wanted to greet Y/n but she pushed past him, holding onto her bruised arms.
"He's all yours Doc." She ran out the front door.
"Y/N! COME BACK!?"Jack continued to wail.
"Y/n please wait. Let me check him first and I will help you." Dr. Carty pleaded.
"I'll survive. I always do." She didn't bother turning around because she knew he would see how upset she was. Instead he turned his attention back to Jack who was now trying to fight against the EMT's until they injected him with something to knock him out. Jack wasn't in his right mind right now but when he was, he would truly hate himself more than he ever thought he could.
