Since it's been more or less established that Rose dislikes Tommy in pretty much every universe 😂 I was wondering what thg!Rose's thoughts on Tommy, if she even has any, are? Did she take notice of him during his games? Is she aware of him much at all following them? Do they ever bump into each other at the tribute center or anything?

Rose dislikes Tommy because of Alfie. Like I told you in my modern AU, Tommy was an asshole with him, cheating on him and breaking Alfie's trust in people in the process. And in canon... Well... 💁‍♀️

But here, even if Tommy suddenly is colder with Alfie after he noticed the relationship between him and her, Rose can't blame Tommy. He's a victim too. And his life, and others victors, is a shit because of her husband and his friends. Nothing but a group of abusers. And because, most of all, Snow.

I don't think she noticed him during the games, same as she didn't notice Alfie. And because during Tommy's games she was in the process of trying to go to the Capitol, so probably her mind was somewhere else.

Probably they saw each other in the Tribute center but for her he's just another mentor. And she's pretty new there. Both Alfie and Tommy, and even Lucy, were there years before she was.

I think, I know, this time is Tommy who doesn't like her. And he has every reason! Same as the rest. Probably they don't understand how the hell someone like Alfie, one of them -a friend, an anti Capitol, a Snow hater- , is after that woman like that. And the worst he can't tell them the truth... not yet at least. Poor Alfie.

8. I actually don't have a favorite band or music artist atm - it's been a while since I've sat down and listened to some proper music. Eric Whitacre is up there with his virtual choir though - that shit gives me chills.

16. oh my god i want so many fucking tattoos. I want to get one of a leopard gecko, a ladybug semicolon (in which the ladybug is the dot above the comma in the semicolon), a Kokopelli-style lizard (which I want to ask for permission from members of the indigenous peoples that use it first and even then I'll probably try to get an indigenous tattoo artist - i think Kokopelli is primarily a Hopi/Apache symbol but I'm not sure), and I definitely want to get something over my top surgery scars (maybe glow in the dark ink?).

I'm also thinking about getting eyes tattooed where my nipples would be (going for no-nip surgery) so that people who stare at my chest get stared back at (: I definitely want dandelions somewhere, I want a white lotus tile tattoo on my shoulder, and I'm sure I'll continue to think of more as I get older.

17. So here's the thing. I've always wanted ear piercings, and the reason (at least I think) that ear piercings are so much more common than other kinds of piercings is because earlobes don't usually have hair follicles, so they're less likely to get infected. Great, right? Except some people's earlobes do have hair follicles - like me. Also I'm like allergic to nickel or some shit so I have to get gold or silver or titanium - I can't do cheap earrings. I've tried to pierce my ears multiple times and it has ended poorly every single time. I do want to get ear gauges at some point - really small ones, but gauges nonetheless. I'm thinking maybe once I'm living on my own and I'll be able to get a shit ton of pillowcases and just change them out every day so that I don't get infected. again.

26. Kid's shows, man. Sometimes I just don't have it in me to watch adult media, especially with how pretentious some of it can get. I mean, Inside Job doesn't take itself too seriously, so that was a win for me, but I just struggle with starting adult shows. Also, generally having fun by being harmlessly immature/chaotic. Adulthood is a scam, by the way.

27. The Hunger Games series and The Underland Chronicles are both up there, but I think my absolute favorite has to be Alex and Me, a fantastic book on animal intelligence.

37. Honestly, it really depends on the animal. I could go either way, and obviously I prefer birds, but between cats and dogs I don't really have a preference.

46. Good fuckin' question! Animals always cheer me up. Friends, too, but sometimes you just need to spend some time with someone who won't talk. Thankfully most of my friends are understanding of that, but sometimes it's just easier to do that with an animal.

50. The Underland Chronicles. I'd definitely want them to use a lot of really good practical effects as opposed to like CGI or whatever (like Jurassic Park levels of practical effects), and I really wouldn't want them to age up the characters unless absolutely necessary for the sake of the actors - and for christ's sake they'd better not get whitewashed like Katniss did in THG.

here again. just to say that it is my firm opinion that anyone who dismisses the love between katniss & peeta (& yes i have not even read mockingjay yet but she DOES love him even if it's not quite in the way he loves her & even if she doesn't realize it herself) Does Not Get It!! i've seen sooo many posts on this site over the years that are all like "the hunger games had really serious Themes & we all just focused on the love story 🙄" but like HELLO the love is INTRINSIC because amidst all the varied harm carried out by an oppressive ruling power & the question of whether or not to rebel & how to rebel there are characters who are People & our main girl katniss is a Person & Love is part of her Personhood. & THAT is a serious enough theme in & of itself, thank you very much! & i don't think we can disregard it if we want to read the books well! (preaching to the choir here. i know) there's so much i could say. also it is so sweet & why are we dismissing it just because it's romantic in nature -_- but also also it's not just romance for the sake of romance it's a very strategic part of the story. i'm stepping off my soapbox thank u once again for ur time gdhjshdjh

E X A C T L Y like it’s like yes the love story isn’t the point but also yes the love story *is* the point! it’s just so layered and i feel like people often want to reduce it to one or the other but to do that would be to flatten the story! because the political allegory is relevant to the love story which is relevant to the political commentary like it’s all one story it’s all one arc it’s all one argument from collins and it’s all wrapped up in the most beautiful and enjoyable package. like that’s what always stuns me about thg is that not ONLY do we get the modern literature’s best love story, not ONLY do we get one of the most incisive and prescient political commentaries on media and dehumanization and war of our time, but we ALSO get it written in a way that is so engaging and exciting to read that you can enjoy it on all those levels and they all hold up!!

Ik snw is only allowed 10 eps and that restricts screen time a lot but… I thought the whole purpose for pushing the main trio was so that they can all get the spotlight. But all we’ve gotten is a lot of Chris and Spock both individually and together but like I’m getting crumbs with Una.

All the interviews, articles, previews for SNW before it came out, sold this show as a Pike, Number One, and Spock show. But when it came to it, there was barely any Una. She was actively written out of a number of episodes (Memento Mori, All Those Who Wander, A Quality of Mercy - are the main culprits), and she wasn't vital to a lot of the others.

She's the first officer. No other Star Trek show in history has had this little screen time from the main cast first officer. Spock, Riker, Chakotay, Kira, T'Pol, Saru/Burnham, even god damn Ransom when the bridge characters aren't even the main ones we follow in Lower Decks (also it's funny because Ransom is voiced by Rebecca Romijn's husband), all have more screen time and more importance than the very first ever Star Trek first officer, Number One.

And it's not about my favourite not having screen time - Effie Trinket is one of my all time favourite characters and she's barely in the last THG book and I didn't get mad over it - it's that this was billed as a show where she would have screen time, and she just...didn't.

If you took her out of Season 1, nothing would change, she hasn't been the driving force of any plot except for her centric - which tbh is less about her (she's been Illyrian her whole life, and we didn't even really see her struggle with hiding it or whether or not she should risk exposing herself to save the crew) and more about a plot point (yes in episode 1, Pike was sent to rescue her, but he could easily have been sent just to rescue the other crew sans Una).

Meanwhile, if you take Chris (most episodes), La'an (Strange New Worlds, all the gorn stuff), Spock (do I even have to explain this one), Christine (Spock Amok/Serene Squall), Erica (Elysian Kingdom/A Quality of Mercy), Hemmer (most of his episodes), or Nyota (Children of the Comet/all her Hemmer friendship stuff) out of episodes, there would be vast differences to the plot and feel of the show.

I think Joseph M'Benga is possibly the only other main cast member who (aside from his centric episode) hasn't been vital to the show.

Una's mistreatment by the show hurts me a lot. She's been in my top 5 favourite Star Trek characters ever since I saw The Cage (and Discovery and Short Treks didn't change that) and I was so excited to see her and Pike work together as Captain and First Officer. AND WE'VE NOT REALLY SEEN THAT?? I think the only time we've actually seen them work together as CO/XO is the Serene Squall mutiny.

I'm really hoping Una has a bigger part in Season 2 (part of me does wonder if it's a scheduling conflict with Rebecca Romijn as she is the most famous cast member, which hopefully changed as filming went on.) because this is ridiculous. I know there’s the argument that they wanted to put more emphasis on the new characters, but Chris and Spock still got hella development, and they were already far more developed that Number One...

Though I can't imagine her arrest will last over one episode (or otherwise we're gonna get entire episodes without her in).

EDITOR’S NOTES

I still remember the first time I heard about The 100. At the time, it was only a pilot script being pitched as a Hunger Games type of show. Being a THG fan myself, I followed the chatter until it got its greenlight. For some reason, I always knew I would watch The 100 one day and love it. But I equally knew that it would wreck me. And so I waited. Years. Somehow in that time I succeeded in avoiding spoilers and being utterly clueless about the show's progress. Ultimately, it was two weeks into The Orange One's regime that had me exhausted with the real world and inexplicably yearning for a new show of dystopian fiction. The pilot hooked me good and within three eps, I was beyond GONE for these characters. 

And then the plot became monstrous. I've lost track now how much its kicked me in the teeth. That was a compliment in S1, where the structure was king, the tone unflinchingly dark, and the breakneck pace devastatingly effective. However, it became much less appealing as the show went on. Looking back, the murder of Wells was the first clue. I should have recognized then what it signaled: the writers' willingness to wield plot for shock devices without thorough character work. It was magnified in S2. And moreso in S3. Plot sped on at an unrelenting pace paired with ever more depressing conditions while character work languished and relationships suffered. But that initial character work, coupled with some crunchy political meta kept me watching...perhaps against my better judgement.

Which meant by the time I reached the end of S3, I was in dire need of a 100 mix. And the headcanons started. The truly remarkable thing about this show is the casting and how bone-deep they inhabit each character. Without hardly trying, I quickly had songs for 15 characters, a testament to how well the show made you care for them. Of course, then I took a year to fine tune it all.

I build my fanmixes like I vid: highlight the good moments, fill in the gaps, and fix the bad moments. So, this 3-part mix mostly follows canon, with a couple of canon-inspired headcanons sprinkled along the way. Although the focal point of the mix (like the series) is Clarke and the thread of hope amidst despair, a significant portion focuses on Raven, Bellamy, and Octavia. But there's also songs from the POVs of several other characters: Monty, Abby, Kane, Wells, Finn, Lincoln, Jaha, Jasper, Harper, Anya, and Murphy. Because S1 is still my favorite, part 1 spends a lot of time with its themes of nostalgia, loss, and forgiveness, all of which then thread into the later mixes. 

For the later seasons, several headcanons are therapeutic in nature, me trying to work through the characterization and come to terms with the canon that progresses post-S1, including two big plot moments that I struggled with: Finn’s massacre; and Bellamy backing Pike. There's also a few Bellarke headcanons to help me become more comfortable with the ship, because I struggle with the idea of it even though I see its inevitability. Of course, there's a sprinkling of canon relationships-- Raven/Finn, Clarke/Finn, Raven/Bellamy (because I am me), Abby/Kane, Clarke/Lexa, and Monty/Harper--but mostly to the extent that these ships drive the characters. Overall, this is very much a cast-centric mix. 

Like most fanworks, my criticisms of the show inspired this mix. However, the content of the mix itself is a labor of love.

reTHG: The Hunger Games - Chapters Thirteen and Fourteen: Calm reigns in those eyes of yours (I've truly punted on a title this week)

I’m going to stick to the prompts again this week, as I’ve had a crazy weekend after a crazy week at work (it’s commencement season again) and last week was just crazy on principle.

I was in Berkeley on Sunday to see my daughter’s choir sing madrigals - and I couldn’t quite escape THG; the madrigals had a strangely familiar theme: Six “Fire Songs” by Lauridsen (a modern composer who calls his opening chord the “fire chord.”)  Monteverde’s “Lament of Ariadne” (Ariadne of Theseus and Ariadne, the maze, the Minotaur, and the tributes), the only surviving piece of a larger opera, and this happy little Scarlatti madrigal (translated from Italian):

“Wrath extinguished the flame and blunted the arrow and loosed the knot that burned, pierced and bound me.  My heart does not fear binding nor wounding nor burning, nor does it care whether you flash lightning, perfidious woman, or whether calm reigns in those eyes of yours, for happy beyond the encumbrance of eros, it scorns the fire, the arrows, the noose.”

Anyway, back to the prompts.  The Capitol technology that always sticks with me is the hair detangler!!  I have fine hair and tangles have been the bane of my existence for forever.  These days, I wear my hair shorter in the back just so I no longer have to worry about dealing with back snarls.  When I was a little kid - and it felt like my mom was trying to yank my scalp off in the mornings before school - I would have loved that instant detangler.  And that’s just a crazy luxury in a world where most of the population lives like serfs.

It’s really hard to figure what Peeta planned to do at the inevitable moment of confrontation, but it’s fair to say that it’s on the verge of disaster the night that the Careers have Katniss treed.  In all likelihood, in the morning, the Careers would have decided to smoke or burn her out of the tree and Peeta’s ability to stop that - going 1 on 5 against the Careers - seems very remote.

So, maybe he had some other plan - a distraction equal to the tracker jacker nest?  Or maybe he had been attempting to persuade the other tributes, particularly Marvel, Glimmer and the girl from District 4, to gang up against Cato and Clove at the right time.  Maybe Glimmer wasn’t as bad a shot as she appeared to be?  (One of the oddest things about THG to me is why Glimmer would arm herself with a weapon she can’t use more proficiently.  Yes, she’s pretty and all, but that can’t be her only talent - she’s a Career!)  Maybe that’s why Peeta interrupted the argument  that was erupting in the woods between the Careers and offered to finish off the District 8 girl - because things were coming unglued too soon????

It would be kind of depressing if he had managed a sub-alliance with Glimmer and District 4 and they were the first ones killed by Katniss.  (Not that I believe any of this is the most likely scenario, just falling down the rabbit hole of wild speculation.)

Katniss and Peeta’s relationship keeps folding and unfolding - in this chapter, there’s almost a whiplash effect. Katniss reaches her lowest point in her opinion of Peeta - wishing him dead at the expense of her district, disgusted with him for playing the game.  And then the turn: that he does manage to save her and she is forced to acknowledge it.  He’s extremely lucky that the tracker jackers were at hand - that he was awake and so able to quickly flee - and that he seems to have a fairly high resistance to the venom - and that Cato’s deathblows sometimes take a long time to actually kill his victims.  But he is on hand, as he planned, to deflect the blows away from her, and at her most vulnerable moment. He is at that moment a free agent of her salvation.
