To the frostbitten tomb colonist: have you had a favourite profession from over the years?
Her eyes seem to light up a bit, which is quite a feat for two empty voids amid a nest of bandages.
"I quite liked being a pirate back in the day, before they were styling themselves 'corsairs'."
She folds her hands over her cane and continues in a voice like a cold draft through paper.
"I always did find it so quaint how surprised the crews would get when I boarded them. It is so funny how all across history, people seem not to realize that others can simply take things. It got boring after a while, though, of course." She tilts her head. "I suppose zailors expect it more, these days."

Eddie sometimes went quiet.
Wayne noticed it after Eddie moved in. He didn't do it as much when he was little and Mary would bring him round, but here he was at ten years old completely silent. When Eddie was little Wayne assumed the boy was just shy, but now that he lived with Eddie he knew that sometimes a whole week would pass with not a peep from the young boy. M
The doctor said it might be a trauma response, might just be something he would do from time to time, either way, Eddie Munson, one of the loudest and dramatic kids Wayne had ever met would still be him, just nonverbal. They worked with a notebook but sometimes Eddie would get frustrated he wasn't being answered fast enough and they were running out of paper.
It was Wayne's buddy from work that presented a solution. "Have you tried sign language? My son was born deaf and Susan and I went to night classes so we could talk to the kid." So that's exactly what Wayne did, he moved his shifts to the day and spent his nights at the school learning to talk to his boy. On his days off he'd show Eddie what he'd learnt and slowly they were able to bridge the gap that the silence presented.
The silent days didn't stop as he grew older, his teachers didn't really understand and sometimes he'd end up in detention with a note saying he was being disrespectful. His friends understood though and enthusiastically asked Eddie to teach them sign language, they'd use it even when Eddie was happily chatting with them, they liked that they shared a 'secret' language from the bullies.
He hadn't had any silent days since Vecna, which Eddie thought was a miracle in itself given the circumstances. However, he woke up a couple months after spring break knowing what kind of day it was going to be. He felt frustrated with himself, he was supposed to be hanging out with Steve and Robin today and was worried with how they'd take it, especially Steve. They'd been dancing around each other's feelings lately and he didn't want to ruin everything before it even started. Resigned he grabbed a notebook and pen and headed to Family Video.
He'd spent ten minutes psyching himself up in the parking lot before heading inside, note written and ready explaining that no it wasn't anything Upside Down related, he just wouldn't be speaking today. The door's bell rings in his ear as he stops suddenly staring at the scene before him. Steve and Robin were, quite rapidly, signing at each other. Steve turns at the bell, smiling at Eddie.
"Eddie!"
Still in a bit of shock, Eddie signs on instinct, "You know sign?"
Steve has the same look of shock now, before his face breaks into an even bigger smile and signs back, "You know sign! You know sign, how, why?"
His hands are faster than his brain as he explains how he goes quiet sometimes, and Wayne and night classes and Hellfire before asking Steve how he and Robin know sign.
Steve looks bashful as he signs back, "Um, after Starcourt my hearing started to go, so Robin, ever the linguist, insisted we learn, which was actually very smart of her. I can still kinda hear but I get by mainly on lip reading."
Things started to make sense now to Eddie, how sometimes Steve seemed to just nod and smile at whatever the kids were saying, or would need things repeated to him. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"Why didn't you tell me about going nonverbal? Robbie has days like that too."
"Didn't want you to think I was weird."
"I like that you're weird, I like you, Eds."
Eddie blushes at what he interprets is his sign name from Steve, the letter E and the sign for love combined.
"I like you too, Stevie." Eddie signs, the letter S mixed with the sign for heart.
Eddie may still have his silent days, but now he shares them with Steve, and they can sign the things he's not allowed to say out loud, making sure they both know they're loved.

the best game of 2024 was an hour-long visual novel demo, and i can't tell you how it ends
Tumblr media
attack and dethrone god.
okay. oh my god. soul of sovereignty by ggdg (of lady of the shard & deltarune fame) is discounted for only a few more days, so i need to get this one out while the iron's hot.
so: i'm inviting you along on another journey. we're following a polite gentleman of the wizardly inclination (loïc) who is approached by a sickly woman in dire need (ysmé). all she requests, in her plea, is an escort to guide her to the nearby temple. his decision to support her may turn out to be the most important choice he ever makes.
... have you ever enjoyed the kind of narrative that traps two people with heavily contrasting motives and personalities together in an unbreakable contract? do you like stories of absolute devotion?
Tumblr media
i could look at this shot forever ngl
... are you compelled by immersive speculative fantasy worlds where the use and study of magic heavily influences the rhythm of people's day-to-day lives?
Tumblr media
(really intriguing magical linguistics system going on here)
... do you ever promise too much of yourself to others, sometimes, even when it's a bad idea?
... if it was possible -- if you could -- would you abandon your humanity for the power to change your world forever?
and, whatever you may feel in your heart about the above...
do you want to see behind the eyes of a hot trans girl as she bullshits her way into a truly volatile level of power and influence and gets everything she wants?
Tumblr media
(+ her pet dilf lovely assistant)
if even one of these elicited a "yes," i think you'll love this story.
i'll go out of a limb:
i think, if you open up your heart, you'll find yourself falling for both of the leads. It's a game that really wants you to look at it from every angle, take it apart, and ask questions about loïc, ysmé, their stories, and what they believe to be true about the world and one another. subtext -- especially the charged subtext this story throws at you and hopes you'll piece together -- is a beautiful thing.
Tumblr media
the number of talksprites in this demo is kind of staggering
the jrpg-inspired world of the mosaic and its surroundings is as vibrant as it is profoundly lonely, color folded into every facet of its character as you move through it. appropriately, it's really invested in a lot of questions that arise not just from high fantasy as a genre, but from the modern fantasy sensibilities of jrpgs and the interrogation of what divinity even means in a world where the gods are forces you can interact with and draw power from, however indirectly.
what can i even say? that gg and toby fox's collab score for the prelude is downright heavenly and made it onto my work playlist right alongside the deltarune ost the day it came out on bandcamp? that gg's art, especially their use of light, conveys every scene with vivid beauty?
Tumblr media
i wouldn't be posting so much of it if i didn't want to eat every CG. oh my god. he's so pretty. it's not even fair
beyond all of that, i think the game's main resonance point with people is that gg's writing is genuinely thoughtful. they use art detail and deft character writing to convey everything about the leads, using the limited time you get with it to paint layers and layers of information on who these people are and why they make the decisions they do. soulsov's roughly an-hour-and-change of text, expressive talksprites, and lush CGs is infused with so much heart and so much horror and so much intrigue that it leaves you feeling like you're a part of this world, carried along for the ride right alongside the two leads. gg clearly really adores these two, and that level of passion makes everything loïc and ysmé do shine even brighter. in spite of (or perhaps because of) all their friction and flaws, they're easy to love.
Tumblr media
(it's really fun to read aloud as a script, too! ysmé's a hoot.)
i hope you experience it with high expectations and an open heart. i don't think it will disappoint. it is, perhaps, just a little bit magical.
i hope you see it through to the end!

alani, what if the reader who wants to be one of the sages dream (to be a sage) was rekindled by old classmate of y/n who visited them after they never met. that old classmate heard y/n's location from the researchers that came back from avidya forest and yes, the old classmate went there seeing y/n's and tighnari babies. however when tighnari went to forest while eating with the old classmate, the old classmate told y/n that they can continue studying while they're taking care of a baby. y/n was encouraged but of course, tighnari heard it.
Tumblr media
yandere tighnari breeding reader part 1
tw: non-con, yandere, misogyny, forced breeding, kidnapping, pregnancy, breastfeeding
I like this!! it will be a disaster💀😂 and he will remind you not to leave🥺
After recovering from the emptiness and shock of knowing you were pregnant, you lived a safe pregnancy under the care and protection of all the forest watchers. You live in a tree house with Tighnari, and the books you can read are parenting guides, but you do learn more than a thing or two from the forest, including nature, animals, aranara, and more. This is a leisurely life that cannot be experienced in akademiya.
Sometimes, Tighnari sits with you in the forest enjoying the breeze. Tighnari allows you to run your hands into his large tail fur when it gets a little chilly. He loves listening to baby's little kicks and rolls on your belly - which might be really sweet if the reality wasn't him forcing you to get pregnant and keep you in the woods.
Eventually, a baby…no, babies were born. Unexpectedly, not one, but three. You bear not to cry. All three fox cubs are adorable, two of them are more lively and one is quieter. All three of them have similar furry fox ears and tails. Breastfeeding becomes a challenge - Tighnari comforts one while two babies suckle from your swollen breasts. Housework takes up most of your time, and the rest of the time you teach Collei how to read and write, and… and continue to get breeding from Tighnari. He always likes to breed you in different poses - doggy-style, mating press, spoons, etc. He's a little mean in bed.
When the leaves start to turn yellow and orange, a new guest visits avidya forest. It was afternoon, and Tighnari had set off to patrol the forest. Ah, that guest is an old classmate of yours, you both studied together at akademiya and took the same course. You didn't expect him to visit! You're a little scared that your old schoolmate knows about your current life, but it seems he already does.
You know the news has spread in akademiya now.
To entertain old school friends, you cooked sabz meat stew and pita pocket. He chats with you about the latest research and recent events - but you find that seems unfamiliar to you, and you can only nod occasionally in response. He noticed your expression and asked if you want to go back to akademiya and continue your research. "You know what? That scholar used to be a housewife. They've gone back to study linguistics now, and I think you can too." Your eyes widen, a little hope rekindled in your heart. "Re-really? But I have babies to take care of…" He suggested that you can take care of them while studying, or you can go back to akademiya when the babies are older and pursue your dream of becoming a sage.
"May I ask you not to put these irresponsible thoughts in my wife's head?"
Just as you were about to discuss it, you heard a familiar voice. You look up to see Tighnari standing at the door. He was staring at the strange man in the room. "Meddling in other people's lives - the akademiya scholars are getting so disrespectful now. Or are they arrogant to think that family life is not worth going all out for?" The old schoolmate was instantly awkward and overwhelmed. He tried to explain that he didn't mean to be rude, but Tighnari asked him to leave.
After the old classmate leaves, you shudder and explain that you didn't mean to say yes, but it's too late. Tighnari knows you're a little encouraged. Once you discover that this is possible, you will try to leave him again. He has to stop you right here. You obediently go back to bed and spread your legs. His pelvis hits you, burying his dick inside of you. And your whisper like please don't cum inside- please don't- was ignored by him.

Finding home Au things that are canon (because I said so, and it's MY au so I can do whatever I want. Send me headcanons, and I'll approve them)
Gambit just got back from the void so he's just now meeting everyone. He looks a little different from how they remember since their gambit really was never a full team mate and rather then just some guy that helped Logan a couple of times. This being said hes meeting Rouge as a 35 year old linguistics teacher for a bunch of brats, flirting with her in the halls, trying to impress her all the time, etc. He wanted to have a cool class like how to use a Bo staff or tutor energy weilding kids but instead got stuck with sex ed. Because of this, he now makes a ton of jokes to Rouge about it (she's across the hall) but actually is really excited to start his cooking elective class this coming fall when he's considered a real team member.
Ororos heals click in the hall like they did when you were a kid and you could tell the principal is coming. She's almost always with a tea or a coffee, walkie talkie and keys jingling. She's very sweet but kids shit their pants if sent to Mrs. Munroes office, meanwhile Mr. Summers office is a nothing, just a lecture and a slap on the wrist. Aint no one actually scared of lasik because they know thw worst theyll get is community work for a couple of weeks but they ligit cry the second theyre sent to munroe's (especially if they know theyre guilty of a big prank or something)
The school gives out free hygiene products and depending on what you need you can special request it.
If students get too angry they are sent to Piotr's art room for art therapy. He surprisingly is very artistic and chill.
Forges shop class is working on a car with no weight limit and that can handle their heavy hitters (Colossus and Wolverine) both in the same car (most bust) as well as a car made from plastic recycling. They're working on it. Its only blown up once!!
Gambit makes breakfast for the staff and some students of they beg enough. He keeps bringing Rouge the first cup of coffee from the pot and has made her pancakes shaped like hearts multiple times. Watching her stab them and smother them make him... giggle helplessly.
Gambit🤝Watching their love intrests viscously stab and rip apart their meals with a boner wishing it was them🤝Wade
He's very respectful towards her, though and sometimes is a bit (COUGH a lot COUGH) of a kiss ass.
Hank's students have blown up the lab at least 4 times by now. One of those times was Wades fault for touching stuff he wasn't supposed to.
Kurt is very glad that Wade has taken over his Duel weaponry/swordsman class, so now he has time to start working out a pitch for a world's religion class+ sunday school. He still runs a fencing club, though.
Peter (quicksilver) has tried so many different positions, including music teacher of all different instruments. Now he just kinda lounges around in the game room and speed cleans the mansion after each day in like 2 minutes flat. Imagine being paid a full salary just for 2 minutes of work? And you get to live somewhere for free and play games all day? Fuck yeah.
Positions I've been thinking about:
Beast (Dr. Henry "Hank" McCoy) is the Vice-Principal, so he does orientation. He has multiple science classes, including biophysics, and has electives in philosophy and poetry.
Colossus (Piotr Rasputin) is an art teacher and handles art therapy
Gambit (Remy LeBeau) runs a sex-ed class and is hoping to soon get approved to run a cooking class next semester.
Nightcrawler (Kurt Wagner) has a fencing elective as well as a religion class, sunday school, and sometimes helps Morph with drama/theater. (Ex duel weaponry instructor)
Rogue (Anna Marie) is a Linguistics teacher who drabbles in social science. “Diction and Linguistics, with Professor Rogue” She can teach just about any language, but russian/german/ french/ spanish and Japanese are her main ones. She's who you go to if you dont understand English and need help. Almost all foreign students have her.
Cyclops (Scott Summers) is the headmaster. He has classes in Geometry, has an elective for leadership and communications (PFFT) as well as being the schools mobility/disability specialist. He, of course, specializes more with children who have trouble with their eyesight.
Storm (Ororo Munroe) is the Headmistress. She has an Environmental Science and Political Science class as well as a multi cultural elective.
Shadowcat (Katherine "Kitty" Pryde) has a comp-sci class and runs an ethics class.
“Ethics 101: Forgetting Everything You Ever Learned From Emma Frost, with Professor Pryde.”
Wolverine (Logan Howlett) is a(n occasional hand to hand combat/ martial arts) PE instructor. (Ex History teacher)
Jubilee is the schools event organizer, event coordinator, event manager, and more broadly, event professional, the ‘hip’ school counselor. "Activities Director & Counselor"
Morph is the director of drama acting and disguises (duh)
Laura is a graduating student In training under the Wolverine (Gabby is a student and is too young to be an understudy)
Yukio graduating student In training Under Storm or Rouge (I can't decide)
Negasonic teenage warhead (Ellie) graduating student In training under Jean Grey.
Mr. Wade Wilson (Deadpool) Is in training under Colossus. Duel weaponry/ swordsman tactics class instructor (plus whatever Logan's doing, he's very nosey and WILL cause issues if bored)
Jean Grey is an english teacher, has a class on psychology, and drabbles in physics.
Ice man (Bobby) is the school financal advisor/accountant and runs a business elective class.
Forge is a Shop teacher.
Quicksilver (Peter maximoff) Janitor, housekeeping, music teacher, replaced original Logan as PE teacher for a while, target practice, teaches fast kids how to avoid running into walls, always in the game room, stock/ errand boy, gets bored super quickly, sports instructor, Read almost all the books in the library, likes swimming, mainly just lays around waiting for something fun to do, his father causes trouble sometimes which he thinks is entertaining but also hella embaressing.
I'm unfortunately left without a history teacher, so shoot me any ideas :)

Indis appreciation post!
Disclaimer: All the canon info is taken from Morgoth's Ring and Peoples of Middle Earth. Also, this isn't a character analysis/meta. It's just a list of stuff I love (plus some headcanons) about one of my favorite characters in the legendarium.
1. She's athletic and outdoorsy. We're told that Indis is "exceedingly swift of foot" and that "she walked often alone in the fields and friths of the Valar, turning her thought to things that grow untended." When Finwe sees her, she's chilling on a mountainside. I love that she's associated with nature, specifically the wilderness. She parallels Feanor in her exploration of Aman and interest in the imperfect. Also, this is purely self-indulgent but ever since reading HoME for the first time, I've pictured Indis as tall and broad, and muscular beneath a layer of fat.
2. She doesn't let her unrequited love affect her life. "There was ever light and mirth about her." She's not the pining, languishing princess stereotype. She goes on. She doesn't let it make her bitter or depressed, and she is so restrained that only Mandos and possibly Ingwe are aware of her feelings.
3. Part of her attraction to Finwe is intellectual. In HoME we're told that his "mastery of words delighted her." Considering that Indis is also a poet/composer ("wove words into song") and that the Vanyar enjoy linguistics, it makes sense. It's also just really cute.
4. She's politically minded. Her reasoning for pronouncing 's' instead of 'th' is: "I have joined the Noldor, and I will speak as they do." This is the right thing to do to gain the respect of the Noldor and their acceptance of her authority. I also think she makes a statement with Fingolfin and Finarfin's mother-names. Arakano ("high chieftain") and Ingoldo ("the Noldo, eminent among the kindred") are not only powerful, prophetic names, they're also strikingly similar to Ingwe ("chief of chieftains") who is the High King not just of the Vanyar, but all Eldar. What a power move.
5. She's able to balance her own culture with the culture she marries into. Indis integrates into Noldorin society easily while remaining Vanyarin at her core, as is evidenced by Finwe saying that "above all her heart now yearns for the halls of Ingwe and the peace of the Vanyar." Her sons also respect and are proud of their mixed heritage; Finarfin "loved the Vanyar, his mother's people" and is said to be like them (as are Finrod and Galadriel), and Fingolfin's daughter-in-law is Vanyarin (plus the Nolofinweans have a special connection to Manwe).
6. She gets an awesome prophecy about her line. "But I say unto you that the children of Indis shall also be great, and the Tale of Arda more glorious because of their coming. And from them shall spring things so fair that no tears shall dim their beauty; in whose being the Valar, and the Kindreds both of Elves and of Men that are to come shall all have part, and in whose deeds they shall rejoice. So that, long hence when all that here is, and seemeth yet fair and impregnable, shall nonetheless have faded and passed away, the Light of Aman shall not wholly cease among the free peoples of Arda until the end." Fuck yeah.
7. Her name means "valiant woman." This is the only definition given in Morgoth's Ring, I believe. I highly prefer it over the "bride" meaning because it's a badass name and is similar to Artanis ("noble woman") and Astaldo ("the valiant"). A headcanon that I'm particularly attached to is that Indis's mother-name is Indome, meaning "will of Eru."
8. She's popular with most of the Noldor. We're told that "Finwe, King of the Noldor, wedded Indis, sister of Ingwe; and the Vanyar and Noldor for the most part rejoiced." The majority of the Noldor also follow Fingolfin and Finarfin instead of Feanor.
9. She's friends with Nerdanel. HoME states that Nerdanel went to "abide with Indis, whom she had ever esteemed."
10. She gets pissed off at Finwe when he sides with Feanor. So much so that he thinks she won't want to see him if he's re-embodied. I know this is from his perspective but I'm inclined to agree. [However, this is still very presumptive of him, and his comment that "Indis parted from me without death" is super shitty. Eugh.]
11. She's close to her kids. Finarfin takes after her, Fingolfin passes on the name she gave him, Findis lives with her, Lalwen goes by the name she gave her. Finwe also says that "she hath dear children to comfort her."
So there we have it! What little info we get about Indis is pretty awesome. And this is just a list; I could write a whole essay on her fortitude and unconventionality and my numerous headcanons about her.

This is about the previous anon's ask about first saying really deep stuff randomly and you mentioning how thai fans point out how eloquent he is. This is honestly something very personal to me and something that ties me so close to how much I love him. Because first saying through tears that he wanted to build a house with the same fence as khaotung were the very words I was looking for when I was trying to explain how intensely I loved my friend, queer platonically, to someone who gave me *the look* when I mentioned that I want to spend the rest of my life with them.
Because how poetic is that really. Someone you love so deeply just a fence away, you wake up to the same sunrise and the same stars light your sky and they're just right there. And they're not yours but they still are you need nothing more than the intimacy of a shared fence.
I think I'll always hold this metaphor close to my heart and as an Aroace person first really gave me the words to describe the companionship I want in life.
The “sharing a fence” remains my favourite interview moment of all time from the boys. It’s a shame it is no longer available on YT, and I feel privileged that I was able to see the whole thing before it got taken down.
But in all seriousness anon, I agree with you. I have always felt First is a soulful person. In between his sweet and playful mannerisms when he teases the fans and bestie, you can see his deep, insightful nature whenever he does or say something.
First has such a way with linguistic. I have said previously that I feel part of First love language to his fans and bestie are by words - and he is wonderful with this. I also absolutely love the way you call his words poetic - because they are!!
I keep coming back to his beautiful love letter to Khaotung following LOlfanfest 2024 (and this remains one of my favourite interactions between these 2)
However, I also recall other moments. For example, during an interview (from FKPP Japan photobook):
“Umbrella is a symbol of romance, when you watch a series with one umbrella being used by two people, it comes out as a romantic scene.”
I know it sounds almost silly - cause really umbrella? But urgh, he just describes it so simply that we (me) can’t help but visualise of 2 people who love each other (platonic or not) sharing an umbrella ☔️, where there is the special moment as they gaze into each other eyes. 🥹
There was also another interview where he was asked what has he learnt over the years in the entertainment industry (from Standard Pop interview):
“I’ve learnt to be happy….we don’t have to be someone we don’t want to be.”
Such a simple statement but oh so powerful.
I don’t know about you, but I’m terrible with expressing myself and language is (either written or speaking) not my forte.
So, yes, like you, I absolutely adore this man.
Tumblr media
(Cover picture from the IF… First & Khaotung Japan photobook) - since I quote one of First’s interview answers 😘

pls pls pls i need more sebastian fics hes my babygirl
as you wish ;)
Sebastian visits the bartender gn!Reader
Tumblr media
Gif by @cinematicsource
A/N: I'm only happy to write more about this man (he's just everyone's bbygrl);
Summary: Every evening, Seb visits a bar where the Reader works as a bartender. The real reasons for his constant visits have never been known to the Reader, but it looks like they will finally be revealed today;
Song I recommend: Stray Heart by Green Day;
Words count: 640 word's;
Thanks for the request!
Sebastian sank heavily into a stool at the bar. You could see drops of sweat slowly trickling down his temples. Well, sometimes he looked even worse after a whole day of job with piano, so you wouldn't be surprised (especially after the time he came in with a vinyl player and scared the hell out of the customers with his jazz. I mean, who comes to a bar when they're already drunk?!)
You smiled kindly, wiping down the glass for your regular. You did this every night, something as routine and ordinary as brushing your teeth or turn off the light before going to bed.
"As usual?"
Seb's head hit the table with a thud, and he mumbled something unintelligible right into the table surface. You innocently laughed at your unfortunate friend, ready to listen to another story about the injustice of this world, music, obnoxious bosses, movies, music in movies and movies in music... The topics of your conversations were limited only by your linguistic abilities.
"You drank already, aren't you?"
Sebastian looked up at you sluggishly, putting his hand under his chin as if he were going to fall asleep right there in the bar (which, to be honest, had happened several times before).
"No, no... I'm just really, really… Really tired. I'll have the usual, if you please."
You quickly took out the golden whiskey you had prepared especially for Seb's visit and filled a clean glass with it.
When the drink appeared in front of Sebastian's face, he must have used all his last remaining energy to push the alcohol down his throat.
At such moments, you didn't understand him. He doesn't need to come here every night, especially when he's in such a bad state. And you're not going to hold a grudge against him for one missed visit!
"Why do you come to me every night? I mean, literally every single night."
Seb thought for a moment, but he was obviously overacting.
"It's just that this place inspires me."
You looked at the client in front of you in disbelief. And from your expressive gaze, it was easy to tell that you would never believe that someone could be inspired by old, shabby walls, one customer in a few hours (and it was usually Seb), a constant draft, and ancient, flooded furniture. There wasn't even a stage for musicians in this feeble bar!
However, Sebastian seemed to realize that he didn't sound convincing at all, so he continued:
"Just looking at this bar, I know for sure that my future club will be better in any way."
You both laughed. Now that was more like the truth.
Seb's eyes, exhausted but still somehow full of enthusiasm, were fixed on you. Which made perfect sense, because looking at anything else in this awful place was unbearable, and it was the only explanation for Sebastian almost falling over the bar trying to get as close to you as possible. At least that's what you thought.
"And as well... I come here to imagine a skilled bartender like you working behind the bar in my establishment."
You were a little confused by this sudden statement and decided to make sure you understood it correctly. It couldn't mean what you thought because it would be…
"Well, then I hope you find someone as good as me."
Seb smiled playfully.
"I don't think I need to look."
... Too good.
You were puzzled, surprised, and excited all at once, and you just couldn't decide which one was more important. However, you knew for sure that your guest's words had made your cheeks involuntarily flush.
"Well, you open it first... But, uh, I have to admit, I wouldn't mind if you invited me to work there."
"You bet I will."
You smiled at each other, believing with all your heart that you two would succeed.

help me decide on a title for my fic please i'm getting desperate
i'm gonna put some info about the reasoning for the titles and general info about the fic under the cut, but feel free to also just vote based on vibes
ok so fic:
this is an accidental fake dating jegulus fic. james keeps having panic attacks which he does not want anyone to know about. regulus accidentally walks in on him while he is panicking the first time, helping him to calm down, and ends up becoming james' go to method for getting comfort, which prompts all of their friends to assume they're secretly dating. james and reg finally go with it to stop getting questions and keep james' cover.
it's supposed to still be somewhat light hearted vibes for the story, like this isn't pure angst and poetry and whatever. idk if it helps to convey the vibes, but the first sentence is as follows:
"The first time it happens it takes James completely by surprise, which is, in retrospect, the entire reason it goes so badly."
titles:
ritardando:
in music it indicates a gradual or sudden decrease in tempo, followed by a complete stop, its used to add a sense of drama and intensity to the performance, creating tension and capturing the listener’s attention
its supposed to signify reg essentially stopping james' panic
in german you also have a "retardierendes moment" (idk what it's called in english) in story telling which is usually in the fourth act and is there to slow down the conclusion, mislead the reader to expect a different ending (e.g. have another little drama happen before the happy end/give a spark of hope before the hero meets their final tragedy)
downside of this is that there is obviously the r-word in english which is linguistically related to this and i do not wanna evoke that association?
also music has literally no significance for the fic and also maybe this is too pretentious for the vibes i'm going for?
rallentando
essentially very similar to ritardando, gradually decreases the tempo in music and is supposed to prepare the listener for a new section (new key/tempo/etc), used to create relaxation or mellowness, allowing for more expressive playing
it couldddd stand for panic attack is over and the new section becoming jegulus, however we go into the story with james already very much crushing on reg so thats not new for him.
plus the slowing of the heartbeat isn't exactly a romantic thing in this context?
it does sound a lot prettier as a word than ritardando, however it's a more uncommon musical word as far as i am aware so idk if people would get what this is playing at
also music has literally no signficance for the fic and also maybe this is too pretentious for the vibes i'm going for?
objectively i could change the below poem to include this word instead even if i guess it wouldn't be 'the end's' one as much
you make my heart beat slower:
rather obvious where this is coming from. play on the general "you make my heart beat faster" only it's the opposite cause james is being calmed down
it just doesn't really sound all that nice? i'm not vibing with it as a title too much it feels off
doesn't shorten to anything nice (ymmhbs looks kinda dumb)
the end's conducted ritardando:
see above ritardando
i wrote a poem for the general sentiment of feeling where this line is coming from:
Tumblr media
decrescendo:
so far my working title
in music this signfies a decrease in volume
which is not at all what i was playing at, i just mixed up the words when i thought about it, but objectively it is a nice word
??????
no musical relevance in the fic

It really baffles me when talking about the media literacy/illiteracy question online - and those who defend the brevity of their reading choices - that we first point the finger at laziness... sure, I don't think you are civically or politically responsible in the way you conduct yourself online, you're not doing responsible government messaging - and I think 'laziness' is often removed from the conversation too quickly - but I would view laziness as the very last influence to really be discussed when it comes to people struggling with reading and children struggling with reading.
And certainly, I think there are many individuals online who cannot see past themselves and their persecution complex - and the free license they've been given to accuse everybody else of reenacting their trauma - and this is not something I would think of as being a left- or right-wing issue - and trust in others, or lack thereof, and solipsism most of all is not a modern issue. But I just think it is wrong to read this cultural situation as a personal failure. There are so many factors at hand:
Are people less literate, and in what way? That they're reading less is probably broadly true; across what populations? Literacy is a loaded question in Australia due to the conflict between Aboriginal languages being neglected in view of teaching English literacy (this was and is a huge problem with previous - certain - Liberal governments ignoring linguistic evidence on English As Another Language learning and supplanting the use of their native language in schools for Aboriginal children, which implicitly - or not so implicitly - neglects the natural and continued use of those languages; "White Australia" policy without the "White Australia" so openly; anti-science - which itself has been employed in racist ends to be fair - but most of all racist at heart. I realise I am speaking largely with a US-based audience, but I really think this is a serious matter to consider when discussing the concept of literacy. Who is empowered, and why? Literacy is entangled with everyday linguistic practice, and different needs are met in different ways. (Later, I will get into the question of artistic/reading traditions).
Per that Atlantic article causing a stir: we cannot accurately compare tertiary students of today with tertiary students of twenty or more years past; not from the professor's day either (whose standards of academic bearing, based on their own student experience, could be inflated - somebody who ends up professor was probably a pretty good reader!); the progressive commercialisation and privatising of university and college institutions is too big of an influence here, including encouraging students to attend who would probably be much better off at technical colleges - that is, the student population is not academically minded, and curricula has been "dumbed down" to support this, except we do want broad education, probably ideally (maybe it all needs reform!); inflation of Bachelors degrees; ask any Classics department how they are feeling about everything (they're always the first to go) - Ancient Greek and Latin just "aren't relevant"; universities are cultivating hostility to learning for the sake of learning, and taking your time with a text in the first place; well, worse than that, academia suffers from publish-or-perish which overwhelmingly affects the type of research being done and consequently the perception of that research; burgeoning anti-intellectualism (both left and right) surely isn't helping; all this foments anti-reader culture
Not done yet. People do not read for leisure as much anymore. The demographic that reads for pleasure (women) is quite conspicuous given the fact that fiction reading now suffers from being viewed as accessory to reading self-help or shitty pop-[science, linguistics, history, etc.] books, and ignoring the way gender influences cultural theatre would be silly; the fear of women doing things that men mostly do is the fear that it will no longer be intellectual and serious - meanwhile, the reverse often happens (most of the professional fashion designers, chefs, hairdressers, are all men, yet in our day to day lives it's supposed to be and generally may be women who like clothes, cook, and do their hair - once upon a time programming and literally threading computers together was just gruntwork conducted by forgettable female secretaries - now it's the cutting edge of society); if (largely) reading for leisure does not enjoy cultural prestige (worse - accusations of pretension or, contradictorily, vapidity) then of course people are going to by and large read much less and be capable of reading much less
Even if they're reading on their phone. There is actually nothing that says you can't read little bits of lots of books the way that you read little bits of lots of tabs in your browser or on your mobile phone applications. It is just not habitual. Habits are everything, and learning how to think outside your everyday habits is a skill in and of itself
Pedagogy: I have written in the past (and shared articles on the subject) about the much much broader problem which is how children are taught to read - at the word-level understanding (not just reading a text and expecting what is written) but also at how to tackle "age-appropriate" reading, or what that even means. The habit (see above) of reading is not something that's necessarily easy to encourage, or even permitted within the curricula, and really I think my personal issue - from having learnt other languages - is that children are not appropriately challenged with the material they're given. From the get-go teachers have low expectations of children's reading ability and it is all basically based on junk science and a perception of how one ought to read and not how reading is practically learnt. Many people on Tumblr often remark it was strange that they were reading "college-age" - whatever that means - books at age ten or eleven or twelve and this, in my view, is actually ideal. I also think it is a mistake to treat texts as something that are intended to teach critical lessons ("Aldous Huxley wrote about eugenics; what can you tell me about eugenics") because, though this is good for exams, it's also not interesting and not fun and anti-reading and anti-thematic. Never have I hated reading more than under the English teachers I had (sorry to English teachers on Tumblr - though in my experience they hate me too on here)
Mass literacy is historically aberrant. It is actually remarkably impressive how swiftly literacy programs have worked to make so much of the population at least literate enough to navigate a literacy-driven society which depends on said literacy to do things such as pay their taxes, read roadsigns, know for whom they want to vote, know their rights and duties and the law in civic society, conduct jury duty, etc.; my point here is the fact that it is actually kind of impressive how people talk about literacy in a way that the way to mass educate and to maintain literate education is actually a closed matter. It's not at all, and it's an enormous privilege to know how to read and write (it is a human rights issue as a matter of fact to deny education); further to that I think that many people undervalue it (part of the issue here) and that some people overvalue it (in the sense that they assume literacy is a special characteristic everybody has access to dip into in and out, and some people do so nobly and some do not do so, ignobly). I don't defend the value of reading on the basis of cultural prestige, but for the very opposite fact that it cultivates an inner sense of self-determination artistically and you know what, maybe even politically. But I would say that this is true for all art; reading is one way of communicating that fact and after all, many of our greatest texts come from or were influenced by oral traditions (Homer, the Bible), see also my vendetta with little shits who masturbate about their superiority to audiobooks. It is true that there are probably many specific cognitive "benefits" to reading, but need we justify it that way? Must everything be justified by it being "good for you"? It's very biologically minded in a way that I don't think is responsible. Spiritual and emotional goodness is sufficient.
Which circles back around to primary, secondary, and tertiary problems, everything from condescension and counter-evidence based science about how students are supposed to learn and what they're supposed to learn to financial incentives in universities to make their subjects easier because failing students means less money and fewer enrolments for those subjects (see my Classics example). What was interesting about the Atlantic article discussing students reading less - and what they didn't criticise as far as I could see it - were universities in turn limiting their curricula; they are responsible for setting the standards which students are supposed to meet. Greek and Latin face this issue particularly hard because you cannot dumb down Greek and Latin where you might be able to pare down how much students are being forced to "read" in other subjects - and they say humanities is easy! Pah! - and I have had endless arguments with other students about how hard Greek/Latin are and how the tutors are too mean with marking etc. etc. and archaeology students are not wanting to learn ancient languages anymore because they're hard etc. etc. and now you are bereft of the opportunity to make more clear assertions about a text. A particularly laughable example was from a peer of mine who tried to make the accusation that a Greek text was racist on the basis of the English translation which used English racially-loaded words when in the Greek text itself it did not have the same connotations. It was a translator problem, not a Greek problem (it's not like the Greeks even need defending). Anyway - sorry - it's getting away from me. Basically, Classics faculties are facing this issue in a particularly concentrated way, and some want to make it easier because of accessibility reasons (limit of intellectual ability is not accessibility definitionally or actionably but okay; I say this as a crazy person who has been "suggested" help in the past and refused it lol, not having done so proudly, but because of intense stigma), but it's that or closure
Maybe, maybe laziness figures in here, eventually. But I don't think it's right (within the narrow purview of university) to point the finger at students when you're widening the goalposts anyway - and making the deal miserable for the rest of us - holy fuck classes were so fucking painful because clearly nobody else wanted to be there. I don't think it's right just to assume people whose habits neglect libraries (including uni libraries), or texts that can come up on a websearch, or secondhand books, or even brand new books, are doing so out of clear laziness, and rhetorically I do not think it is helpful to think of it as laziness - nobody likes to think of themselves as lazy, and nobody likes to be persecuted - especially when laziness often has manifold influences which much better explain the problem. No, I am not accounting for individuals with exceptional experiences which influence their struggle with reading - you have your own journey I could not possibly account for - but equally I think everybody's got something going on. I hated doing uni readings on a screen, so I printed everything out four pages to a page, double-sided; usually about 70-80 pages became 17.5-20 pages, which was completely doable for each of my subjects that I took and minimised how much I actually felt like I was reading. Now I have an e-reader (Kobo) I have an even easier time for leisure reading as well as extra research.
Why does any of this even fucking matter? It fucking matters because as much as I think there will always be people who don't want to read or don't need to read, this is an issue which influences how people navigate society and how many people don't understand how storytelling works, which makes them annoying to be around, and they get on my fucking nerves. To be well-read is not, in my view, a special prestige afforded to the very few and the very pretentious; to be well-read is to be somebody with a well-rounded sense of their surroundings and their environment and other people and the artistic potential of the narrative form. We're rather lacking in our highly literate culture in folkloric traditions; we view fairytales and folklore and mythology as beneath our very enlightened selves; but it's all for the lesser, because we don't have a consistent body of narrative shared in society. The reason your teachers appeal so much to Shakespeare is because his work is foundational to the English literary form and actually comprises a traceable influence. When you are actually empowered with the body of these ideas - even if you hate them - then you really can have something to say (though outsider art is, sometimes, very valuable). And I guess that's where Campbell feels really relevant: this is part of how you relate to the world and yourself and your place in that world. (I also agree with reading well outside your own cultural bounds, without a view of exoticism; all worldwide traditions offer this local richness).
What constitutes that shared tradition is commercially-driven pop culture, manufactured for hyperpalability*. Is it always bad? I don't really think so, since if it were entirely artifice, I think people would be able to tell (and they can tell). Parts of it are genuine. For every Marvel film, you might have one Dark. For every [popstar whom I am allowed to hate without people losing their minds], you have Susanne Sundför (who does write pop structured songs so she's a great comparison; the issue is not the pop form itself). Everybody's worried about what sells, and to be sure, for such expensive endeavours you have a right to be worried, but it does get pretty narrow - but it's not like a one-woman workhorse author should be worried about the hyperpalatability of her work, but she is, because authors don't get paid very much. You can't exactly survive off of this stuff. But I'm just a bit averse to the immediacy, the ignorance, the complacency; even readers will point at other readers and say they read the wrong thing (romance - fanfiction - science fiction - fantasy - dark fantasy - Sartre - fuck that guy). Maybe, bone-deep, we're petty and judgemental.
*Totally hilarious to me when anti-intellectual online edgelords masquerading as counter-cultural punks think It's Hip To Be Square. Yeah you tell 'em baby, you're so right.
Ultimately I wrote this post because I am frustrated with "but my little baby books are hopeful, whereas boring adult stuff is mean and not hopeful" because the bizarro age dichotomy shits me off (yes I think there can be books "for" children which are rewarding to visit/revisit as adults) but also because adult fiction encompasses the wide, vast range of human experience - yet I am also frustrated with the self-important, pretentious individuals who are busy fingerwagging - fucking FINGERWAGGING, ops normal on this shit for brains website - about the ostensible laziness of people who do not read and implying that reading must be a painful experience to be good or not that reading widely you will discover whole new worlds through doors you never thought to open... me, I am an optimist. These things should be approached with joy. Reading is not painful, you are not ill-equipped to read because you're on your phone.
Habits are habits, but anybody trying to proliferate "dopamine addiction" theory is high on humours theory (that is: pseudoscientific bullshit) and I think is actually dangerously encouraging people to feel locked in to their phones and the reward of notification by virtue of saying you are locked in to your phone and the reward of notification, and you are conditioned out of reading. None of this is closed science, not least on the matter of a biological addiction to your own nebulous brain chemicals. None of this says anything significantly major about your habits and the mental roadblock of "I am a little phone addicted baby" is a tangible roadblock to sitting down and letting yourself read indeed, on your phone, like you may be doing now. The irony of this post's length merely adds to my broader point. Now you may be a stalwart defender of modern pseudoscience because it is reassuring to think of yourself as "tied to dopamine", but in which case surely you are too ensnared by the draw of dopamine to source where, exactly, you read about "dopamine addiction". And no I'm not saying it's all in your head (like, say, dopamine addiction is all in your head), personal and mental roadblocks are a whole different thing to untangle. Some people are scared of reading because they used to get in trouble a lot at school about it. Some people hate reading because they think it's boring and stupid. People are beautiful and complex.
This topic is really picking up steam on Tumblr - many people are upset about the Percy Jackson remark at the end of, again, the Atlantic article, but I think that was meant to cause a stir, and frankly I think if you are proudly ignorant you're just a regular anti-intellectual; if Percy Jackson is so powerful then make the case for it (I enjoy a range of low-brow and high-brow art and even kind of reject the distinction - Percy Jackson is just not that good - also the article made an excellent point everybody's ignoring: it draws on Greek mythology! It has a literary lineage!) - and people are saying many, many annoying things on the matter, which perhaps demonstrates the matter best: they would all be so less annoying if they were reading instead of leaving inane little comments from the painfully small window of their worldview.

Tag you’re it! Share five authors/fics you’re really enjoying right now and let’s spread the love.
Also feel free to share what you’re working on right now 🩷
Good morning anon, lovely hearing from you ;)
Top 5 right now? Only 5?
1 - @the-real-housewives-of-waterdeep and her fic Alchemy 410 - Pre/Post BG3 events. An amazing protag and Gale relationship build up with great chemistry between the characters (sometimes literally) and just a beautiful read.
I don’t know what it is about you, Dekarios, but you’ve permeated my inner world and I can’t even say that I mind. I don’t know if I’m holding a torch, a matchstick or a lightning bug in a jar when it comes to my feelings for you, but I can’t seem to shake them. I know I run the risk of ruining our friendship, but if I didn’t at least tell you what I feel, I’d carry those feelings around forever.
----
2 -@cheerysmores and Broken Horizons - Post canon angst. Like the summary alone won me over and I've felt pain with this fic and loved each moment of it - “I am going to die,” Gale whispers into the darkness, then again, directly at her sleeping form. “I truly am going to die.” - Just oooooffff.....
---
3 - I don't know if I'm allowed to tag them... but they're on here and under the name ACrowsRockCollection on Ao3 - Fic is Weave me the Sunshine - A rarepair Gale/Jaheira fic which works amazingly well. Some very poetic language, gorgeously written.
Jaheira shook her head, “The Harpers collect people willing to do what it takes. I know commodities when I see them, pawns, lanceboard pieces. It feels foolish to throw you away.”  “I’m the villain of the story, I…” Jaheira cut him off, “No, Karlach told me the story. I could see why your God would be upset, but before the Absolute, to make you suffer needlessly…” “I used to think I was special, but we are mortal playthings in divine hands. Followers and chosen are pawns to be used or destroyed on whim.” “Strategically, it seems a waste of a perfectly good pawn,”
---
4 - @auroraesmeraldarose and Professor Dekarios - All the comfort and smut you could ever need. This is my go to when my head is too full of everything and I sit with a mug and my kindle and just relax into the fluffy world. It's really the sweetest AU I've ever read. (Also fucking hell 176k words since feb? And I thought I wrote a lot!)
“I think I need to spend the next few hours with you wrapped up in my arms nice and safe. I think I’d rather underestimated the perils of your career choice. Let’s go home, please.” Helene obliged, and did indeed spend most of her evening snuggled in Gale’s embrace. She didn’t like the idea of being weak, of needing to be protected… but if it meant being held against his chest for hours at a time, you could call her a damsel in distress any day of the week.
---
5 - @silent-words and Twin Compasses - One of the best bards I've seen written. Discussions of linguistics over a campfire, really good chemistry where you can see the build up happening gradually. Just romance through words in a way I can't explain.
‘ Let me not to the marriage of true minds / Admit impediments ,’ the bard recited. Gale picked up instantly: ‘ Love is not love / Which alters when it alteration finds ,’ he exclaimed with a flourish. The wizard’s eyes lit up. ‘ Or bends with the remover to remove .’ Laerie made a dramatic gesture and then smiled. ‘I love Shakespeare, he truly was the Bard of all bards. Who else was able to insert so many reiterations and yet make the verse so beautiful? How did he make his images abstract and tactile at the same time?’
Even my cold dead heart is falling in love over that interaction.
---
I could give shout outs to so many others right now. From @judasiskariot and her Resident Evil fic, @crazybagelbitch and the Chase fic I love, @weaveandwood and Auroria, and especially the person writing the Cazador 1980's fic that has stolen my heart and mind. So many writers deserve to be praised for their work!

Dé sorud! It's me again! I had two questions but they're very unrelated so I'm sending them in two asks:
First, I was wondering what sort of terms of endearment were common on Naboo (such as between couples, or between family, or to children, or more teasing names between friends) and whether there were any ways you could make a nickname from a normal name (as in, would you shorten a name/or maybe add something on the end (I believe it's called a diminutive? But I really do not know linguistics that well lol)
Séto!
Dé sorud!
Some terms of endearment:
cureecuree - sweetheart (lit. sweet-sweet)
câkeen - a way of saying "you" that kind of means "the only you"? "you, the one with meaning to me"? this is a very intimate form of address, not a pronoun
nasuka - ~darling
nacuree - honey
sukashisé - dear heart
nad folocâd - [my] beloved
conân - soulmate (would not be commonly used to address someone, but you could say [someone is your] conân)
némmél - (lit. land-star)
These can be as teasing or genuine as the speaker wants, though némmél in particular is often used in a teasing way, as is cureecuree, for... reasons.
There are two ways to go about nicknames. First, cut off the lowest vowel from their name (the order is â>o>u/a>e>i, so a/â will never get cut off, and neither will long vowels like oo, ee, or é) and then attach it to the end, and adjust sounds so the emphasis falls on that vowel and to get rid of weird or phonologically non-matching; the point is to shorten and simplify the name.
This can vary actual results heavily: Tsabin becomes Tsabni, Filla becomes Fllai, Câlude becomes Caldu, Luke becomes Elku or Ylku (instead of just Lku), Jisomb becomes Sombi, Namun becomes Namnu, Eirtama becomes Tamai, etc. Go with vibes.
The second way, for people who simply don't have the vowels to remove from their names: Just cut off the first syllables until you have something short, and maybe repeat it. Padmé might well have been Mémé as a child. Sheev... let's not find out.
Hope this helps!

How’d you discover you were plural? If that’s ok to ask
of course! genuinely, it's less of a discovery that &i is/are plural, and more that plurality is a meaningful conceptual framework to apply to my/our existence.
to dip a bit into coming-out cliché, &i've never felt, like, singular; we've always been iterative. we hardly even share the same body. actually, the iterations we've been are sometimes tied to particular forms of embodimindment, not unrelated to other experiences i've had - disorderly eating/drastic weight changes/puberty/trans medical interventions/elective body modification/lived experiences of trauma. this, like many things, is something for a while we assumed everyone felt (and perhaps everyone would, if we as a society did not tamp down so violently on our inherent systemhood [we're made of systems]).
then, &i learned that not everyone referred to themselves with different pronouns directed toward different iterations, and that this actually offended some trans people &i tried to like, ~build community~ with. people don't like seeing selveshood as periodized, because that disrupts the narrative of linear progress/growing-up we like to ascribe to "being a person."
so we sat with this feeling of having grown sideways or crossways and learned about multiplicity (beyond harmful media/medical discourse) on tumblr. actually, &i think [S]arah learned about it back when she was knee deep in the whole indigo children thing lmao, because there was also soulbonding stuff etc. [don't bother with those types of sites, they're run by new age antisemitic anti-vaxxers, but obviously 9 year old [S]arah didn't know that].
when we began learning about multiplicity on tumblr, we were under the assumption that alters had to be far more clearly defined and transparently mapped than is true, &i think, for most systems. others have commented on the weird proximity to clinical confessional discourse that fixations on system mapping point toward: not because there's an inherent problem with system mapping, but because the idea that everyone/everymany must do this / leave evidence of their collective (and ultimately, legible) existence, is just bullshit, just like the stories we have to tell to receive "gender dysphoria" diagnoses.
i think what really changed our relationship with multiplicity was/is our friendship with @materialisnt. it's difficult to describe the degree to which mix moss have impacted &my life, both through chaim "formal" scholarship (the formal/informal binary is bullshit ofc) and through several years of deep friendship and unwavering solidarity. &i recognize in hindsight that &my longstanding interest in multiplicity - and alterhumanity writ large, because i am not a human and actually don't think any of us are or were? - was really just, you know. being an egg. many such cases. mix. moss's patience with &my questions & collective excitement at my interventions and thoughts gifted us the confidence to, only recently [and partially pursuant to &my dissertation, which includes discussion of alterhuman digital epistemologies and pedagogies] begin identifying with plurality. perhaps even "as", though that preposition has always skeeved &me out when it comes to identity stuff.
ultimately, &my relationship with plurality isn't a concrete object that we eventually dug up and slapped a nametag on. it's a meaningful, collaborative, and community-based signifier that helps us best situate ourselves in conversations about relationships and love and pain and time and all the important parts of. existing, we guess. it's a choice to generate linguistic and spatiotemporal friction be just kinda existing and not being "one human being". it is also something that feels deeply heart-aligned, something that allowed me to let out a breath we'd been holding for a long time, and free up space to think with more creativity and compassion toward those &i value most: that is, those rejected by the existing conditions we call "reality" and "commonsense" and instead think more capaciously, as ourselves, about different ways of being persons and people together.

Don't know why but I really get the feeling that Damas has Jason's personality and is in the 'Samiel' position of the relationship while Hiraeth has Samiel's personality and is in the 'Jason' position of the relationship— that's not to imply that your characters are repetitive— they're very unique and interesting to read about, and any parallels only give off a certain nostalgia. It also helps that they're set in the same universe though on almost opposite ends, and we've got Hird gracing us with her presence in both.
I also love what you do with the names of your characters, Hiraeth's name literally represents the entire conflict in his head and heart, and Lysander means liberator I think. Aubrey translates to something near 'elf-ruler' I think, which is quite fitting. Jason Lane does not need explaining and I'm only making a guess with Samiel, but if it has any relation to Samael then it's also very a sneaky easter egg.
And if I just over interpreted everything then feel free to ignore this 😅
Thoughts and prayers for Hird, who has had to deal with two sets of idiots now! 🤣
I love your analysis of the characters (and thank you so much for the sweet comments! ❤️). I think (and I'll try to avoid spoilers here) there are also elements of Hess in Damas. Damas is...perhaps not quite as serene and calm as he makes himself out to be. (However he's definitely with Jay on the politicking, I absolutely agree with you!)
ANON! Lovely Anon! I think you may be one of the first (or the first!) to talk about my sneaky names! Yes, these are absolutely correct. I tend to choose main character names deliberately, mostly for the fun of it and because I can actually slip some spoilers in there without giving the game away.
Lysander is absolutely 'liberator' (to no one's surprise it's an ancient Greek name and I also had a lot of fun with this, because the two kings of Alskir system is based on the two kings of Sparta concept, and there was a notable Lysander of Sparta). To avoid spoilers, I won't say more about Lysander's liberator role yet.
Aubrey is indeed 'elf ruler'. I wanted it to reflect both Aubrey's literal role as an Archaeus, and at the same time imply he is a man that makes bargains/tricks people (a sort of nod to the fae, was what I was thinking of).
Hiraeth (nearly called Hireth) - his name is alllll about one of the main themes of RP, and that longing is, I think, so central to Hiraeth-as-he-is-now.
Jason absolutely came from Jason and the Argonauts because, you know, he ran into sirens and there's a whole voyage theme there that I think is relevant to Jay and his bouncing around the galaxy.
Samiel was absolutely a play on Samael for multiple reasons (a lot of it centred around his role as an adversary, a theoretical 'seducer' and someone who effectively destroys a lot of Lenian rule on his way out the door).
Hespherus is the twin brother of Phosphorus in mythology (Hespherus is the evening star, Phosphorus is the morning star - they're effectively the same star and two sides of the same coin). The morning star has a lot of linguistic links to being the 'light bringer' (aka Lucifer) - so I desperately wanted my fictional Antichrist to have that name.
Daniel was named thusly, because the Book of Daniel in the Bible has a lot to say about the Antichrist, so I went for it (there was a theme with Path to Paradise 😂)
