zelda's role is to take up the powers of hylia. zelda has always been a girl, a woman. of course all of them would be. hylia is a goddess. the first zelda was hylia's personal vessel.

botw zelda [ going to call him zel here on out in this post for clarity lol ] would have to come to terms with how his feelings don't align with his self-perceived role. at first, he thinks his yearning to be a boy is more to do with hating his responsibilities. i think his relationship with both his gender and his role in destiny is an incredible complicated one because of all of this.

meeting link, the other destined one, probably really fucks him up more. link being a trans boy himself, on a surface level, one might think would bring zel relief; someone like him, so close to him. but it does the opposite. link has always been a boy. this link, being assigned female at birth, is a boy as well. to zel, this reaffirms his thoughts that destiny has locked their genders into place.

in general, i don't think transphobia is a huge thing in the loz universe. it's like, a very niche kind of bigotry thankfully. it's MY childhood fantasy games and i get to mostly poof it out. i think the big exception to this would be those associated with destiny, prophecies, and of course, the reincarnation cycle.

zel is pressured to not only be a good daughter and princess, but to take on the powers that should be blessed to him by the goddess herself. everything just drives him further into hating everything, including link early on.

a big part of zel being able to actually unlock his powers would be both what i think happens in game [ desperation to protect ] as well as acceptance of himself. zel's inner turmoil over his own identity, where his duty as holder of the triforce of wisdom starts and right to be himself ends.

of course, there's no actual reason for the holder of wisdom to be a woman; as there is none for the holder of courage or power to be a man. it just so happens that it tends to be like that.

i think a retelling like this could add such a strong layer onto zel's character arc. it's so good. augh. thank yuo i hope any of this is somewhat coherent. they kiss in the end

btw i think generally trans masc zeldas go for the name sheik [ thank you OOT sheik you walked so the other tran masc zeldas could run ] but botw zelda specifically would take the scientific name of like, a small critter or plant, and alter it so it sounds kind of like a hylian name. OR just go by 'zel'. or both ! idk.

idk man like i’ve done the t thing i’ve done the top surgery thing i ‘pass as male’ i have facial hair i have a deeper voice but like i am still non-binary. i don’t fit into either box, but i’d prefer to be seen as a “man” than a woman at all. at least looking the way that i do now completely eliminates the possibility of someone referring to me as a woman. and that’s really what mattered to me the most.

gender is so complex and i find that when people say “women and non-binary people” or “afab enbies” they’re never picturing someone who looks like me. yknow? especially while being black and that as a whole thing making me be seen as more masculine in general. pre-t i was always seen as butch, i was always seen as a lesbian no matter what i did and no matter if i had long braids to my butt or whatever.

i find comfortability in masculinity, but not male-ness. and that’s a hard thing for a lot of people to wrap their heads around, for whatever reason.

i’ll say i’m a man for ease of people understanding how to respect me, like doctors, teachers, staff at this center, because they don’t really know me. and i want to make sure i’m not at all being seen as a woman. so i’ll not correct people on using he/him or whatever, even though i really want to because i know they’re seeing me as a cis man. and that makes me very uncomfortable.

it’s so complex. i use the term queer because i dont want people to immediately think of what’s in my pants if i say i’m a gay man or if i say i’m a lesbian (i don’t identify as a lesbian btw). but like if you know me the truth is that i’m just t4t and connected more to just general faggotry than anything. and again, a lot of people have a hard time wrapping their heads around that too. so i just say what’s easier for them to understand.

like to my family, i’m a trans man and i use he/him. i don’t want to explain shit to them because they’re barely on board with me being trans anyways and i don’t want to have that be a whole thing. idk if any of this makes any sense. if people have input feel free to reply as well, i’d love to have a convo or solidarity with someone who potentially feels a similar way because i feel like i’m in such a limbo state for some reason idk

I don’t know they’re just not my thing, I’m really particular with them like all fic. It kind of depends I guess on how the author writes it or treats it. There’s some t4t lesbian rayrard out there I think I’ve read that I really enjoyed. I guess I lean more towards trans character fic instead of just cis girl genderbends??? Idk!

I don’t really think there’s any problem with queer people wanting to stick to queer ships, as a lesbian I definitely prefer queer ships to het ones (tho I obviously still love het ships). Heterosexuality is everywhere in society and some queer people just don’t care to have to see it in their escapism. Like you said, people can headcanon the ships as queer if they want but not everyone is gonna want to do that. My thing is more-so that I don’t personally understand how anyone can hate the canon TBHK ships because they fit my exact taste for ships, like people are fully allowed to hate whatever ships they want but it’s just not computing in my brain lol. And Mitsukou was like the main one I was thinking of besides AoiAoi lol

The problem for me arises when people try to claim the ships are bad just because they dislike them, or try to say they aren’t canon. I have had someone fully argue me that Aoi doesn’t love Akane; and I once saw this creator who was like very insistent that HanaNene and Mitsukou aren’t canon because “Kou likes Nene” and “just because HanaNene kissed doesn’t mean they like each other.” That is where the bias comes in imo, and it happens uniquely with both queer and straight ships. People are quick to dispute any canon queer ship just because it’s queer, and people shut down canon straight ships because they aren’t willing to admit they just don’t like them. I’m not in the Sailor Moon fandom but I have seen the “calling it problematic” thing happen with MamoUsa, and from what I’ve heard their relationship is perfectly fine

Not trying to argue with you btw, sorry if my response came out that way!! I just wanted to add a bit of nuance here because this is a subject I love to yap about, your perspective is 100% valid. Sometimes the exclusion of straight ships does feel a little biphobic, I’ve seen some tbhk fans write off Kou’s feelings for Nene as comphet when there’s literally no indication of that in the manga and AidaIro make it pretty clear when a character is fully gay. And I would LOVE to see more transfem/transmasc/t4t headcanons for ships that are straight in canon. I personally headcanon Sakuhiko as sapphics (genderfluid bi Natsuhiko and nonbinary lesbian Sakura ftw). Fandoms tend to be very rigid about trans headcanons and I would absolutely love to see more of them

I also agree that people miss out on a lot of great relationships when they don’t like ships just because they're straight (or just because they’re gay). I understand where they’re coming from ofc but sometimes those biases lead them to miss key elements of the story. Such as AoiAoi haters missing Aoi’s entire character arc and Aoi and Akane’s canon personalities and development just because they refuse to admit the ship is well-written. On the flip side I deadass saw someone try to argue that Mitsuba isn’t important to Kou because “he could’ve easily been replaced with Yokoo or Satou.” I swear this fandom is braindead

And sorry to yap even more but omg you’re SO REAL for the “why watch a media so heavily focused on romance if you hate the romance.” Like again, people can hate whatever ships they want but why make yourself watch something that focuses so heavily on a relationship you hate??😭 If a romance in a show doesn’t look cute to me and it’s a prominent element I simply won’t watch it.
