Being a Checo fan and a Carlos during this race is so funny to me, the girls are fightingggg

like these two crash and suddenly they’re mortal enemies and like I don’t think either of them are in the wrong, it’s just racing

And on the Checo hitting Carlos thing, like he was probably just making sure Carlos was okay because it was a hard crash, I’m sure they’ll make up by next weekend anyway.

happy fostered bday! i’m really curious to know what binds the characters together through the different books and as the story progresses. is it a goal they have in common, is it love, revenge...? and did 13 year old rachel consciously think about this or did it occur naturally?

BOOKS 1-2

The “good” squad in these books is Reeve/Harrison/Foster & they’re really allied by trying to stay alive and get away from bad guys (in book 1 the group of antagonists is different but in book 2 the group is Lonan et al. LOL).

BOOKS 3-5

In book 3 we actually get a huge split in loyalty because Reeve allies with Lonan where Foster and Harrison rightfully distrust him. That causes some group conflict especially with Harrison who wants to kill Lonan so bad! But when they get over that, the main 4 come together quite nicely for books 4-5 where the boys especially make Reeve’s mental health their priority.

In book 5, Lonan starts experiencing some Horrors and the whole squad rallies around him for a bit.

BOOK 6

Book 6 is so interesting because Harrison and Lonan are FIGHTINGGGG. So Lonan and Foster have an alliance (Reeve almost too), and Harrison is alone because he’s angry at everyone LOL. They do eventually though come together again for Lonan.

For the Moth Work spin-offs, love absolutely is what brings the characters together even when it tears them apart—everything is about love! In MW, Lonan is afraid of love and Harrison wants love. In FH, Harrison is harmed by love and Lonan is searching for it. In BODY BACK Harrison is trying to forget about love and in Hallowed Bodies Lonan is desperate for it. In Changing States Jeremiah is trying to heal from love and find it again.

In Seventh Virtue, the goal is just Lonan LOL. Everybody trying to save that man or hurt that man for power or reunite with that man or help a loved one reunite with that man like he’s really the moment!

Timeline of Scott and Jean’s Marriage Falling Apart (part 1)

(New X-Men #131)

I’ve been rereading New X-Men and I really want to dig into all the stuff that went down between Scott and Jean (and why they SHOULD have gotten a divorce). I feel like everyone has a tendency to just blame the affair with Emma but there was so much shit going on before that. Let’s take a look. 

The Search for Cyclops #4. Jean saves Scott from possession by Apocalypse, and Ozymandias seems to foreshadow that Scott will not fully recover from the trauma of possession. Ozymandias is correct.

Uncanny X-Men #393. Logan asks Scott how he’s doing since the possession stuff and Scott lashes out at him for invading his privacy. On the Scott-and-Jean front, it’s mentioned that they no longer have their psychic rapport but that Scott knows his wife well enough to know her plans. 

Uncanny X-Men #394. There’s trouble in paradise and Logan can tell. He brings it up to Jean. 

“Everything’s fine,” she lied. (Logan also kisses Jean in this issue because he thinks they’re about to die. Stop doing that, Logan. Jesus.) 

New X-Men #114. Once again Logan decides that Scott and Jean’s increasingly strained relationship is his business. (This is OUR failing marriage.) 

(Hank also notices that all is not well in the Summers-Grey marriage.)

New X-Men #116. Scott takes marriage advice from some bugs. 

We finally get some more context on what exactly is going on with Scott and Jean. They haven’t had sex in five months (probably not since before Scott’s possession by Apocalypse.) Scott is cold and distant, according to Jean. Scott is traumatized and all Jean wants to do is help him, but she can’t. (Sidenote: Jeannie baby you ALSO don’t know what it’s like to be POSSESSED by an evil spirit. Grant Morrison I am sending you a copy of Fantastic Four #286.)

New X-Men #117. Jean is lonely so she seeks out Logan, who explains that Scott and Jean are perfect for each other. Then Jean kisses him and he’s like, “You and me are never gonna happen.” (For some reason I remembered this kiss happening AFTER Scott and Emma first hook up, but look at that! Jean’s infidelity came first.)

New X-Men Annual. Emma taunts Scott about the fact that he and his wife aren’t having sex. 

New X-Men #139. (Flashback)

Emma propositions Scott and he turns her down. 

New X-Men #118. Jean asks Scott if he messed around with Emma during the annual. This is building up to be a really terrible cocktail of trust issues and intimacy issues. Like I think Jean’s paranoid (and projecting, considering she had just tracked Logan into the woods to kiss him) but also she’s not entirely WRONG because Scott IS having/going to have an affair with Emma. 

New X-Men #120. Somehow, the Phoenix returned. Possibly to salvage Jean and Scott’s marriage because, as we know, the Phoenix Force looooooves Scott. 

New X-Men #121. Same energy as the “Love you, wife” panel from Uncanny 394.

New X-Men #122. The girls are fightingggg. Scott’s concerned about the Phoenix returning (as am I, but my concerns are rooted in the fact that Grant Morrison forgot about the Phoenix retcon.) I wonder if Jean’s desire for psychic and physical intimacy/closeness is somewhat being fulfilled by the Phoenix at this point? Her husband won’t touch her, but the Phoenix wants to be fully entwined with her. 

New X-Men #125. Cassandra Nova digs around in Scott’s head and says that Jean expects him to be so much better than he is. Scott powers through. 

New X-Men #126. They love each other so much. 

Cassandra Nova messes with Scott’s brain again. Did the bugs tell Scott he’s going to sleep with Emma? Also: interesting here that Scott might be afraid he’ll let Jean down as an X-Man, or as a husband, or both. 

“Well! Now that Cassandra Nova’s dealt with! Back to the matter at hand: we still can’t be intimate with each other and we need so much goddamn therapy.” 

Cyclops #3. Scott tells some Savage Land cavepeople about his marriage difficulties. (Choosing to interpret “leader” as in Scott being leader of the X-Men, a team Jean is on, and not that Scott is somehow the leader of their relationship.)

New X-Men #128. For some reason, Scott thinks that bringing his marital problems to Emma is a productive idea. He also makes two really annoying references to wanting Phoenix and being unsatisfied with “just Jean.” (They’re not. the same. person.) 

But I do think what Scott says some very illuminating stuff here about “faking teenage unconditional love in the face of unstoppable chaos and change” and “I’m not who I was and I can’t tell her who I am... in case she hates what I’ve become.” 

It’s easy for Scott and Jean to be Scott&Jean when everything’s going to hell and the X-Men are getting thrown into high-stakes mission after high-stakes mission. But it’s hard to find a balance when things are relatively quiet. (🎶 But at least the war is over...)

New X-Men #131. First of all, I love how much Emma looks like Generation X-era Emma here. The little glasses, the big fur robe. Second of all, it’s been interesting to see how much Hank, Logan and Emma all become involved in Scott and Jean’s marital problems. 

For example, here’s Logan pointing out that Scott and Jean need to communicate better. 

Scotty you’re a master strategist. WHAT was the plan here? Emma is not a therapist. Of any sort. 

She’s definitely not a qualified sex therapist. Also I agree that yeah, Scott’s possession trauma seems to be affecting him in much the way a sexual trauma would. So he should see an actual, licensed therapist. Who isn’t trying to mindfuck him and actual-fuck him for a laugh. 

This is actually so disappointing because I want them to be having these messy, invasive conversations about JEAN. But they’re just talking about the Phoenix. 

Once again Scott expresses that he doesn’t want to hurt Jean, and he feels that telling her the truth about his feelings will hurt her. 

[Narrator voice] They were in fact having some kind of weird affair. 

New X-Men #134. Hank is very concerned about Scott being unfaithful. It’s almost as if he cares more about preserving Scott and Jean’s marriage than Scott and Jean do. 

New X-Men #138. Scott says that Apocalypse’s possession made him feel like his life and his marriage were small and boring.

ct in particular as a “b plot” needed more not just for herself but also for charon. rvb is all about “Noooo Theres bad people and good people on every side of war………stop fightingggg” but the most we get outside of the leader for charon as a remotely humanized force is demo and girlie talking shit about ct like 😭😭 this goes for the pirates in chorus too Like ok Now Ur ok with gunning down criminals….. either way like What was she doing. Her ass was Not trusted at all how did she find out about Tex and alpha and everything. They were too busy focusing on golden boy york to care or smth /j

wash as comic relief is definitely A choice. on one hand it highlights his change from pfl to recovery one. on the other hand….on retrospect wouldn’t it be more strategically advantageous to Keep that personality going forwards so the councilor A. Doesn’t see the shift in demeanor towards the project and B. Underestimates him…? u theorize that’s what he’s doing in pfl as well so I don’t really see why he would change so drastically. “Woobified Wet cat” is much less likely to betray than “Serious Seruous Guy”…..but I guess comic wash lead to the creation of agent Georgia so I can’t be mad, legally

@joltning I present to thee the elaboration requested:

When broken down to the bare essentials Wash and C.T fulfill the same function within the story, and the differences between them as characters mostly results from how the story was executed when it came to them fulfilling that function. 

For example, everybody (myself included) complains about how C.T exists solely as a plot device in the Freelancer Saga, but nobody complains about how Wash also exists solely as a plot device in Recovery One and Recollection. I mean Reconstruction is literally the ‘omg theres a plot!?!?!?!?” season of RvB, and without Wash there is no story. 

The main reason Wash isn’t perceived in the same way as C.T is due to the level of freedom the writers had when it came to telling the story they wanted to tell. The Blood Gulch Chronicles and Out of Mind set the foundations for Recovery One and Recollection, but it was through Wash that the lore of RvB was reconstructed into a cohesive story. The unexplainable was explained, the unelaborated was elaborated upon, and all the wacky hijinks and random bits and bobs of the previous seasons were tied together in a way that answered the question asked in episode one: Why are all of these idiots stuck in a canyon in the middle of nowhere while being separated into color coded teams that are fighting each other?

C.T however did not have the same level of freedom as Wash, and this is because of pfl’s nature as a prequel combined with the pacing of those seasons. We pretty much already knew everything about her that there was to know, so there was no point in hiding anything or taking it slow because of that, hence the painfully obvious foreshadowing. This approach to the Freelancer Sage, and C.T’s story is what leads to her essentially having the same arc as Wash, just reversed—or more accurately described; mirrored, like Chief and Arbiter in Halo 2.

A majority of the reversal and/or mirroring between them manifests in their personalities, which I actually talk about some here, but some examples of the phenomenon in regards to actual plot points are:

They are both introduced as recovery agents (or rather fake C.T, who was the real C.T at the time, was introduced as a recovery agent). Wash is a single agent recovering human technology from dead Freelancers, and he uses explosives to destroy the rest of the equipment to prevent information leaks. C.T is attempting to recover alien technology from a long dead civilization with the help of other aliens, and he uses explosives to make sure anyone who knows of their operation and presents a problem will be destroyed to prevent information leaks. 

We knew exactly who Wash was, who he worked for, and why he was reassembling the blues. We didn’t know who C.T was, who he worked for, and why he was fighting Tucker in the desert. 

Wash was shot in the back and survived, but failed to subdue the enemy. C.T was shot in the chest and died just as they were going to subdue the enemy.

In regards to the real C.T, some examples include:

The Meta was portrayed as the primary conflict for Wash, but in reality he had always been aiming for the destruction of Freelancer. On the flip side, C.T’s fight to take down Freelancer is portrayed as the main conflict, but in reality, while poorly explained, tracking down the alien artifacts seemed to be her real goal (which is not as insane as it sounds when you remember that Charon Industries was more aligned with the UNSC proper than pfl was). 

Wash never hinted towards his plan of taking out the Meta in Recovery One to South, or his plan for destroying Freelancer to the Reds and Blues until he had the perfect opportunity to strike, and by then he had built enough trust that they were willing to help him out despite his secrecy. If they weren’t, well, he knew what to say to change their minds. C.T however wasn’t exactly subtle with her thoughts and feelings, and she didn’t build any trust with the people around her, so when she finally defected—which didn’t take a genius to see coming—no one was willing to listen to her or take her at her word, and there was nothing she could say or do to change their minds except offering concrete evidence. “I’m starting not to trust you.” vs “I can’t trust you.”

This one isn’t a plot point, but I’m going to mention it anyway because I think it’s a nice example of this subtle yet obvious mirroring I’m talking about, and shows what I was trying to replicate in my blurb that spurred me to finally write this analysis:

Counselor: Agent Washington? Agent Washington? Washington: Sorry, what were you saying? Counselor: Were you thinking about Epsilon again, Agent Washington? Washington: No. Counselor: What happened with Epsilon was not your fault, Agent Washington. Washington: I didn't think it was. Counselor: We have safeguards for the unstable emotional patterns of an artificial intelligence. Sometimes these algorithms fail. Washington: Oh. So then it's your fault. Counselor: We prefer to think of it as no one's fault.

Vs:

Washington: It wasn't your fault, Connie. Connie: Easy for you to say. You didn't drop the ball. Washington: The ball got dropped. We were all there, it's everyone's responsibility. Connie: Dammit, why are you doing that? Washington: What am I doing? Connie: Making excuses for me. I'm not making excuses for myself...why are you?

All I've mentioned above is also why C.T’s relationship with the leader and the plot twist that the C.T in the desert wasn’t the real C.T are disliked by so many, as there was nothing to justify the sudden bait and switch like there was at the end of S6. I mean, considering we see both Tex and South use voice mods to sound like men, it reads as though that was supposed to be the case with C.T as well, which makes it feel like it was changed at the last second because everyone saw it coming.

This is an issue because A) There's nothing inherently wrong with being predictable—a good plot twist always has foreshadowing, even if it won’t be registered as foreshadowing until the twist happens in certain cases—and B) The story of the Freelancer Saga as a prequel was confined in a box created by the previous seasons, and all they were doing was connecting the aforementioned events to tie up a few loose ends and properly establish Carolina's driving force in present day S10.

so basically, it’s an au elaborating on the idea of “oh shit sara kills???”

you see bee, in the ai simulations, which were done to get survival rates for the candidates in the death game, Sara’s best friend joe wasn’t present, so she was focusing solely on her own survival. This matched with the fact she may/may not have been raised for this event specifically (her father is very likely the creator of the death game. Head of a cult-adjacent company bla bla daddy issues) makes her kill quite a bit.

so there’s also this anzu character who has a weirdly high survival rate for what we see of her in-game. Thus I have been. Thinking about these two‘s dynamic in the sims for many many months.

now onto the plot! Which will be hidden under the cut.

SO OKAY OKAU. The story itself is from anzu’s perspective.

basically, anzu ai decides to go skip school to go prepare a birthday present for a little sibling (to make things even more fucked up yknow.) then she got abducted and woke up in the main hall. (This is a fabricated memory, safalin wanted to spice things up a bit. In reality she just kinda spawned there.)

so the boosts/handicaps, nao kai joe and kugie, are not here because that would not make any sense. And all of the candidates are alive to start because there is no first trial. Anyways everyone ge ts introduced and they find the doll head and split up, per usual.

everything seems normal until the first main game, where shin Acts erratically and tries getting sara voted. However nobody belives him (megumi, the cop, gets voted instead. Idk who the sacrifice is but they’re dead too) this puts shin on Sara’s hit list though so once they reach floor 3 she kills him off quickly.

except anzu witnessed the murder.

so chaos ensues. the girls are fightingggg….

Eventually they become allies but that’s all I have super planned out so far jsjdjksk
