Thing you might not have known, but yes, gladiators actually were made to promote/advertise objects in the arena when coming out. Seriously...they were celebrities in their era and product placement ads (live time) were a real fucking thing.

It's also why, contrary to the "popular take" of the thumbs down killing of gladiators, that was SUPER SUPER SUPER SUPER and I Mean SUPER rare.

These were THE PEAK of entertainment back then. They were housed, fed, trained, paid sums, they were given whores, a lot of money went into them.

It'd be like taking your race track sponsored exoticar with legit major brand sponsors/deals and then going, DAMN, I LOST THAT RACE, FUCK IT, TOTAL MY CAR.

i don't want to discredit the work that writers do, especially in laying the groundwork for a character like homelander and crafting a compelling arc for him with every new season. and i'm sure they were very involved in the making of ep 4 as well, despite kripke generously giving credit where it's due here. however...

it is nice to know that antony starr has not only elevated the character with a superb performance but also made some pretty valuable contributions to the script :) obviously i'm biased but i think he is the standout of every episode. i'm throwing emmys at him

thinking about bisexual erasure and how being bi is having to constantly remind people bisexuality exists, even to other queer people. i have a friend at work who is gay and knows i'm bi and sometimes a guy will come in and will talk about his wife when the guy leaves my friend is like "mhm, sure, wife." and i'm always like well... he could be fruity AND have a wife and it's gen like... he forgets that's a thing until i mention it? the other day a guy came in and said he used to date someone and used they/them pronouns and THEN talked abt his wife and my friend was like "aw he went straight." and i'm just like HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO TEACH YOU THIS LESSON OLD MAN? and it's shit like this from within our own community that makes bisexuals the silent majority. because it's exhausting and i just need people to remember we exist without having to remind them. i want people to see bisexuality as an option, not an after thought.

when i was 12ish, my mom was showing in a western art show. our booth was right next to a nice old man signing autographs. all day he had a steady line of giggling old ladies who were much younger than him that's how old he was. my mom said "you don't know who he is, but that guy was FAMOUS in westerns" and i was like "westerns and old people are boring, but okay" and when I looked up his imdb later he wasn't in anything me or my friends knew, so i forgot about him
