Homelander + environmental storytelling
I really like these shots a lot, and as far as I am aware, he is the only character who gets them. I know I talk a lot about the commodification of this man. But even the show treats him like something non-human. And not like a supe. But like a toy.
He is a toy under glass, kept under the influence of his handlers. Madelyn is trying to distract him from having independent thoughts through carnal means. She tries the same when he figures out that Becca Butcher's husband is on the warpath, trying to distract him by proposing a date night, dangling sex in front of him like a promise.
He is a mentally broken man whose personality is fractured like mirror shards. He is constantly being pulled in so many directions, all his wants and needs at war with each other. He wants to be a father, but being a good father means beating his insecurity and not pushing his son into the hero role he so desperately wants for him. He wants to be a god, but being a god means not having human attachments, and that would mean losing Ryan - and the love of the people, who will only fear him forever after.
He is a wounded god. Larger than life in all his portraits, immortal and perfect. He tried to rip his heart out/had his heart ripped out, but still he bleeds not ichor, but blood. Why does he hurt like a human?

how people (re: radfems) continue to act like somehow the nature of the sex activities themselves are what make a sexual encounter violent baffles the mind. the idea that neil gaiman was allowed to rape so many women for so long because "liberals pressure women into being kinky for #Feminism" and not that he was rich and powerful and was taking advantage of very specifically poor women who were relying on him for housing, food, etc disgusts me in a way i cannot articulate. how is this relevant? how did "sex positivity" allow gaiman to do the same thing many many many men before him have done (leverage their higher social and economic class to coerce and silence victims)?
this is a disgusting attempt to drag very real victims experiencing the very real consequences of a world when men have the social and economic standing to control women and their bodies in the ways they please into the typical garbage radfem bullshit about how BDSM is evil and scary and bad and #normalizes violence. heres the thing you dipshit, sexual violence against women has been normalized for centuries and it certainly was not under the guise of Kink or Freedom of Speech! and had gaiman not had access to this language, he still would have sexually abused women because he was a rich man in a position of power to do so. that's it! it's a very simple material reality! no amount of "sex negativity" will do fucking anything to prevent sexual violence. god.

Loneliness has followed me my whole life, everywhere. In bars, in cars... sidewalks, stores, everywhere. There's no escape. I'm God's lonely man.

honestly it seems like what people are struggling to reckon with is that alicent raised aegon and aemond to be Like That and now she is signing their death warrants for being Like That. and i do not agree with this view! alicent did not want to raise those children. she did not want those children at all. those children were conceived through rape and born when she was a child and their father barely remembered their names. how much culpability does she have here? there were a lot of mind-numbingly stupid jokes going around after she spoke to gwayne about how the only child she didn't raise was so normal, haha, when she also raised helaena. wait it's almost like there were other forces at work that socialized aegon and aemond into ruthless men and those very forces allowed her sons to extirpate her power and enact violence upon countless innocent people (including her daughter). did alicent hightower invent the patriarchy yes or no
she is not without fault in how they've turned out and she did set the events of this war into motion. she acknowledges this herself. but she is trying to recover her personhood after realizing that there is no virtue in sacrifice and the rigid ideals of duty she's abided by all her life. and i think this position is hugely sympathetic!
#i have LOTS of problems w the execution that i'm sure i'll complain abt at length later#but i don't actually mind this#still the framing was lame and weightless yeah#alicent hightower#house of the dragon#hotd spoilers

i can’t stop thinking about how flawlessly Sage ingratiated herself to Homelander without having to parentify herself in any way. she understood from the get-go that being someone he respects is far more valuable to her than being someone who nurtures him, which she had no interest in doing. she shunted that responsibility off onto others who were less consequential to her plans.
she proved herself not only his equal, but a loyal one, something he desperately craves. she pulled through for him despite his transgression against her, something Homelander himself has never done. he’s always had a one strike policy. she absolutely blew his mind and turned him instantly into a hound at her disposal.
those violins that played in the finale always signify some kind of shift in Homelander’s psyche, a shift in control… and this time there was someone else there to pick up those reins and take over.
i’m so fuckin ready for Sage’s phase two
