On top of a hill in Valencia, where the wind blows most days, the buildings are big, new and absolutely nonforthcoming. They could house anything — a doctor’s office, a car dealership, a secret government agency. Inside one, against the back wall, lies a pile of large equally nondescript pieces of canvas. Most are long and tied up with string; some have been folded into thick squares and stacked. They could be anything — enormous window treatments or very thin floor coverings.

Hillsides, houses, airports and cathedrals; cityscapes, landscapes and the ocean rocking toward the horizon; courtrooms and bedrooms, bungalows and castles; gas stations, skyscrapers, apartment buildings; the roofs of Paris and New York, corridors, tapestries, train depots and a mineshaft burrowing into an icy mountains.

These are the 90 painted backdrops that remain of more than 200 saved through the Art Directors Guild Backdrop Recovery Project, a two-year attempt to keep a relatively few pieces of irreplaceable art and Hollywood history from the fate of so many sets, props, costumes and backdrops: the studio dumpster.

“Hollywood started as a green industry and then became brown,” says former ADG president and Recovery Project founder Tom Walsh. “Everything was used repeatedly; nothing went into storage. Then when studios began to decline, they got rid of everything, sold things in auctions or just threw them away. And the first to go were backings. We will never know how many were lost, and if I go down that road I will just start to cry.”

“These, though,” he says, “we were able to save.”

There is no more iconic Hollywood image than the backdrop. Backdrops, or backings, are the enormous paintings that make the movie and television industries possible by stretching the confines of a studio set into endless possibility. With a good backdrop, western plains can stretch to the horizon, snowy peaks of mountains create the suspense of dizzying heights, jungles bloom, skyscrapers loom and cities wink through apartment windows. Sets cradle the action; actors, writers and directors create characters and drama; but backdrops build worlds.

Many are imprinted on our collective memory — the Georgian sunset against which Scarlett O’Hara vowed never to be hungry again, the island beaches of “South Pacific,” the view of the Danube from the Von Trapp family’s terrace in “The Sound of Music,” Mt. Rushmore in “North by Northwest.”

In the early years of Hollywood, studios hired artists to paint their own backings, which were sometimes used repeatedly and sometimes thrown away, depending on need, space and the studio’s financials. In the 1950s, a few scenic artists realized this was not a great system, that studios somehow sharing backings might work better, and a few artists began striking out on their own, painting and purchasing various backdrops they would then rent out.

Nowadays almost all backings, painted and otherwise, are furnished by rental companies.

JC Backings is one of the best known of the now handful of rental companies with the most notable collection of historic backdrops in the business. A business that has increasingly shifted away from painted backings to photograph and digital versions. Over the years, JC Backings has regularly, and out of necessity, culled its collection. Even when rolled or folded, backdrops are big, difficult to move, and require temperature-controlled storage. Those not making money as rentals are literally just taking up space.

Two years ago, President Lynne Coakley decided the company no longer needed 207 of its older backings. But this time, instead of filling up an oversize dumpster, she donated them to the Art Directors Guild, which unrolled, photographed and cataloged each one, and then set about finding each one a home.

Most of the more famous images went quickly. The film academy took the backdrop from the “Fit as a Fiddle” number in “Singin’ in the Rain,” the eerie landscape of “Forbidden Planet,” the tapestried walls of “Marie Antoinette,” the office from “Adam’s Rib.” Others, like the Sistine Chapel from “The Shoes of the Fisherman” were given to colleges; the Autry Museum of the American West has eight (including two from the 1947 Katherine Hepburn/Spencer Tracy Western “The Sea of Grass”) and a few went to the Royal Scottish Academy. (George Gibson, the legendary head of MGM’s scenic design department, where many of the backdrops were painted, was Scottish.)

In their new homes, the backings function in a variety of ways — as exhibits, teaching tools and occasionally theatrical backdrops, but all, including the ones still in storage in Valencia, mark another important shift in Hollywood. For many who work in the cinematic crafts, the real tragedy of the digital revolution and the end of the studio system has been the loss of so many iconic props and artworks. Now, as more studios are dismantled, absorbed or re-purposed, there is a growing demand that the working assets of old Hollywood, be they research libraries, backdrops or remainders of sets, be preserved.

In the short version of the story, the Backdrop Recovery Project began with a phone call. In 2017, Walsh was working in New Mexico as production designer on the Netflix western series “Longmire” when he got a call from Coakley.

She said: “Well, Tom, we’re going to move.”

He managed to not drop the phone, but it was a big and upsetting announcement. JC Backings was founded by the Coakley family, which has been part of the scenic art world for five generations. Over the years, the company acquired the collections of MGM, Universal, 20th Century Fox, Disney and Paramount.

For 40 years, the company operated out of the famous MGM scenic paint studio on what is now the Sony lot in Culver City and had a history with the studio for even longer. Lynne’s great-grandfather, John Coakley, was a scenic artist there, working under Gibson’s tutelage, when, in 1936, he fell to his death from a studio scaffolding. MGM’s method of compensation was to hire his son, John Harold Coakley, as an apprentice. John Harold eventually went to 20th Century Fox and, after “Cleopatra” nearly bankrupted the studio, he bought its backdrop collection. In 1962, he formed JC Backings with his son, John Gary Coakley.

In 1972, the company moved to MGM and its still gold-standard scenic studio.

JC Backings remains in the painted backdrop business — a backing from the 1958 musical “South Pacific,” for example, was recently used on an upcoming Netflix series and several equally venerable backings were recently rented for new Marvel projects (none of which Lynne can name because she signed nondisclosure agreements). But at least half of the company’s inventory is photo and digital, and it made no sense to pay for the MGM studio, which was built for painting scenic backings and did not have the storage space the company needed.

When Lynne Coakley decided to move the headquarters to a larger facility in Culver City, with a warehouse equipped for painting in Gardena, she eyed the 3,000 or so painted backings in the company’s collection and realized that more than 200 of them had not been used in years.

A decade ago, she says, she would have just chucked them; some were faded or damaged, some so specific they could never be used again.

“It’s only in the last 10 years that we’ve started thinking of them as having historic value,” says Coakley. “For years, we thought of backings as a commodity; that’s our business.”

In the long version of the story, the conversation that resulted in the Backdrop Recovery Project occurred almost 10 years ago.

An award-winning production designer, Walsh had worked with JC Backings for much of his career. As president of ADG, from 2003 to 2013, he was committed to making the public aware of scenic artists and preserving the historic work that remained. “I started as a pot boy,” he says, referring to the young workers who mixed the paints that scenic artists used for backdrops. “It was the last days of the old ways, and ever since then, I have a soft spot for scenic artists.”

And not just as a preservationist. Walsh believes that old Hollywood arts are crucial in developing the new ones and bemoans the fact that many cinema schools now view scenic painting as an elective for their arts programs.

“A lot of people are going into the digital arts,” he says, “but the best artists I’ve worked with, digital or not, are the ones who can pick up a pencil, who can look at something and see it before they start re-creating it. No matter how they do it.”

In 2012, he founded the ADG archives, which contains resources gleaned from old studio research libraries — books and photos, paintings and advertisements, anything and everything that could help artists of all types make the sets, props and backings beautiful and believable.

That same year, he approached Lynne about publicly displaying some of the iconic backdrops and the small paintings from which they were created; over seven years, the ADG and JC Backings co-hosted five open-house nights at the historic MGM studio.

The events were so popular, Walsh says, that he wondered if there was a book to be done. While giving a guest lecture at the University of Texas, Austin, he had met Karen Maness, a former scenic artist who loved backdrops almost as much as he did.

“I grew up in San Diego,” Maness says, “and I fell in love with all the murals in Los Angeles. When I saw my first theatrical backdrop, I knew this is what I wanted to do: I wanted to work big.”

She had been teaching theatrical arts at UT Austin for several years when Walsh approached her about doing a book, and she immediately said yes. “It was a passion project to understand these artists, to help them be seen for their work.”

For the next four years, she and Richard M. Isackes interviewed Hollywood masters and in 2016 produced “The Art of the Hollywood Backdrop,” a gorgeous doorstop of a book that tells the story of an art form that is at its best when it does not appear to exist

“The publisher said it was the most beautiful book they had ever made,” Walsh says. “Certainly it is the heaviest.”

“Tom saw the urgency,” Maness says. “A lot of the artists we interviewed for the book are gone now, and I am so grateful that I got to speak with so many. It’s changed the way I paint and think about painting. I have never seen painting with such sensitivity to color, temperature and value structure. I am so embarrassingly in love with it.”

The Coakleys and their unique collection are a big part of “The Art of the Hollywood Backdrop,” in which the family’s story was told publicly for the first time. Lynne’s parents are, she says, very private and reserved individuals. Working with Walsh and Maness, Lynne began to think of JC Backings’ collection of painted backdrops as something more than company assets.

“After the book came out,” Walsh says, “we started hearing from a lot of people who were also interested in preservation.”

During the early years of the backdrop exhibitions, Lynne had been surprised when Anne Coco, the motion picture academy’s graphic arts librarian, had asked if she would be willing to donate some of the small paintings done as blueprints for the backings, which she happily did. So when Lynne decided there was no point in moving the 200-plus backings that were no longer in use, she called the academy first.

“The academy took about a dozen right away,” Lynne says. “The cream, obviously. The rest went to the ADG, and,” she adds laughing, “Tom got them to take about 10 more.”

Although the academy will not reveal anything about how, or which, backings will be displayed in its new Museum of Motion Pictures, Walsh says he put together an exhibit for architect Renzo Piano and his staff when they were in the designing phase.

For the remaining 207, she called Walsh, who was thrilled.

Thrilled and a little daunted. Moving more than 200 backings, some of which are more than 30 feet wide and, affixed to wooden battens, weigh several hundred pounds, is no joke. Nor is the work of unrolling each one and trying to identify the films for which it was used. Especially when you have only a couple of weeks to do it.

“There were some of backings that hadn’t been opened,” says Maness, who, along with a dozen or so ADG members, helped with the moving and cataloging. “The reason they survived when so many assets were lost or sold off in auction was that they were able to keep them at MGM so they were up and out of sight.”

But if the three weeks it took to catalog and move the backings were difficult, they were also exhilarating. There was gold in them there rafters.

“No one knew the ‘Fit as a Fiddle’ backing was in there,” says Walsh. “Or the tapestries from ‘Marie Antoinette.’ And the ‘Forbidden Planet’ landscapes were so amazing. But even the ones that weren’t famous, are gems. If it weren’t for JC Backings,” he says, “this library, which dates back to the 1930s wouldn’t exist.”

He has spent the past two years finding homes for the original 207 and then an additional 65 donated by Scenic Express. As of publication, there are still 50 or so in the Valencia warehouse that he hopes will find homes at some film or theatrical school. The University of Texas, Austin took 47, including the 24 from “The Shoes of the Fisherman,” which Maness uses to teach painting and design to her students; one of her classes is reproducing the Sistine Chapel.

“Everything you need to know about how to paint is in those backdrops,” she says. “I recognize that we are living in a digital world, but there’s so much power in the painting. “After the book came out, it raised consciousness about preservation. Easements Demystified

Saving historic places rarely takes a one-size-fits-all approach; the Conservancy most often applies a different set of tools and strategies in each case. While much of our work typically involves years of effort nudging a project toward a preservation outcome, the best way to permanently save a historic resource is through a conservation easement. An easement is a legal agreement recorded on the title of the property that runs in perpetuity with the deed, regardless of the owner.

Easements in a Nutshell

An easement is a private or partial legal interest transferred by a property owner to a qualified preservation nonprofit organization (in this case, the Conservancy) or government entity. The owner continues to own the property but transfers the specific set of rights represented by the easement to the easement-holding organization. As the easement-holder, the Conservancy is responsible for monitoring the property’s condition, reviewing any proposed changes to the property, and ensuring that any alterations conform to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation (nationally recognized and widely used preservation standards). 

Since accepting our first conservation easement in 1981, we have worked to ensure long-term protection and preservation for some of the most visible landmarks throughout Greater Los Angeles. Easements come to us in various ways, sometimes as a result of an advocacy effort. When the 1931 Pellissier Building and Wiltern Theatre faced demolition in 1979, the Conservancy helped to delay demolition by negotiating with the City, providing a feasibility study for alternative use, and holding a massive public rally. Backed by hundreds of supporters, the effort lead to the Conservancy’s first major victory. Developer Wayne Ratkovich rescued the building by purchasing it, completing an extensive sensitive restoration, and donating an easement on the property to the Conservancy.

Why People Donate Easements

Many owners of historic landmarks look to conservation easements because they provide even stronger protection than traditional landmark or historic district designation. Many local preservation ordinances allow for only a delay, not denial, in the demolition of a designated landmark, as is currently the case in Los Angeles. Easements also are not subject to political issues that can threaten designated properties.

While many owners have the best intentions and wishes for their historic properties, future owners may not share the same values. As we have seen all too often, it is risky to assume that future owners will continue to preserve a historic structure, even if they voice such intentions. Residences, especially from the mid-twentieth-century, can be particularly vulnerable. As original or longtime owners move or pass away, the properties they stewarded for decades can be seen as dated, in need of too much repair, or simply inferior to the development potential of the lot.

An easement requires both current and future owners to properly maintain the property, and it provides a legal means of enforcement. Because easements are recorded on the title for the property and run in perpetuity, regardless of the owner, they serve as a vital tool to protect historic places for future generations.

Some people donate easements to take advantage of potential economic incentives. For qualified projects, an owner may be able to take a charitable contribution deduction from their federal income taxes for the value of the conservation easement, if the contribution meets Internal Revenue Service requirements. 

The value of an easement for the purposes of the federal tax deduction varies by property, based on a qualified appraisal performed by a qualified appraiser. The property’s development potential can also affect the easement value. For instance, properties that theoretically could otherwise be redeveloped at a much higher density might have a higher value of the easement deduction. Anyone donating an easement should obtain solid tax and legal advice specific to their circumstances. 

Conservation easement properties are generally privately owned by individuals or organizations who wish to see them preserved, not harmed, and are outstanding stewards. Though ready if necessary, the Conservancy has not yet needed to take legal action to defend and enforce any of our easements. 

Every Easement Tells a Story

Most of the Conservancy’s easements cover only the exterior of protected buildings, typically only the façades. Depending on the owner’s intent and the particular property, an easement might be much more detailed and specific. The Lawrence and Martha Joseph Residence and Apartments is a good example. Built between 1946 and 1970, this is one of the most significant examples of Storybook architecture in L.A. Nicknamed “the Hobbit Houses,” the eclectic cottages were designed by Lawrence Joseph, a former Walt Disney Studios artist who later worked on classified aircraft design projects for the Lockheed “Skunk Works” facility in Burbank. The Conservancy holds an easement protecting the original landscaping, as well as the exterior façade and interior features created by Joseph.

Not all of the Conservancy’s easement properties are located in L.A. In Downey, the Conservancy holds a façade easement on the Casa de Parley Johnson, a two-story Monterey-style residence designed and built in 1927 by noted architect Roland Coate. Built for Parley Johnson, a prominent local citrus farmer, and his wife, Geline “Gypsy” Johnson, the home and its gardens were originally situated in the center of the Johnsons’ fifty acres of orange groves. Surrounded by whitewashed walls, the house features balconies and patios integrating the interior spaces with the outdoors. Parley Johnson’s widow Gypsy lived in the house until her death in 1986, when it was bequeathed to the Assistance League of Downey.

Each of the Conservancy’s easement properties has its own unique story and significance. Thanks to the protection provided by easements, these stories can continue to inspire us for years to come. My friend and I want to start a shelter of sorts for rehoming abandoned, unwanted and neglected pets. We live in India where these kind of organisations are seriously lacking and because of that we don't have a lot of resources as well. Do you have any advice and resources you could point us towards ? We won't start it until everything's completely planned out of course.

That’s an awesome plan! :D Fair warning that there’s a LOT of text after this, heh. Sorry for the length, but there’s lots to talk about and think about with something like this.

So the first thing I would suggest doing is looking into all of the possible rules and regulations that might apply to what you want to do. Check for things like types of animals that are allowed to be kept where you are, whether any require permits or anything like that, if there’s a limit to number of animals that can be kept in a building or on a property, any noise regulations (especially if you anticipate taking in a lot of dogs, noisy birds, etc.). Also check on any permits or forms that need to be filled out in order to run a rescue specifically - I found out that my city requires a permit for any type of animal rescue/shelter, even for as small as hermit crabs. Might be that none of this applies, especially since it’s so rare in your country, but it’s worth checking, just to make sure. You don’t want to get really far down the road on planning or be set up & running and find out that you’ll be shut down because of missing a permit or something.

Another thing to look into while you’re doing all of that, is whether there are any rules/regulations in India about receiving donations for a rescue/shelter. In the US, you can receive donations in general for a cause, but it’s easier to get donations if you apply to be a non-profit, which can be a lot of work to get done, if I remember correctly. But doing so means that donations people give you are tax-refundable, so it makes the idea more appealing to people and you’ll get more money & item donations that way.

Related to the above things, look into the financial aspect of the entire plan. This would include planning how you want to fund the rescue/shelter (your own money, donations, specific events/fundraisers to make money for the shelter, etc.), and also find out whether you’ll have to worry about any kind of tax things with the shelter. I’m not really clear on all the rules to do with that in my country, much less whether it would apply or what you would have to look into for yours. I would suggest maybe talking to a bank or a lawyer or something. You could also contact any rescues/shelters that you do know of in the country & see what they know about it, as well as their advice & knowledge on the above topics.

And in general, reaching out to any similar organizations in the country is a really good idea! You can ask for advice on the above topics, but you can also find out if they have any other advice specific to starting/running a shelter in your country. Things like where to look for donations, how to market yourself, and the best resources for supplies.

If you have trouble finding any shelters/rescues in your country, you could try expanding your search and talk to animal rescue groups in other countries as well - they can still have good advice on any pitfalls they ran into while getting started, what to look for when taking in animals & what to look for in new homes when you adopt animals out, and so on.

As far as how to find shelters/rescues, I have to admit I’m not entirely sure the best way to go about finding good ones & contacting them. I know Best Friends Animal Society in the US is a relatively well-known rescue, but can’t say for sure how easy they are to get a hold of for this kind of advice/talk. If any of my followers have more suggestions on places to check out for this, feel free to comment!

- Do you want to take in any & all animals or limit yourself to particular species? How good is your knowledge base on different species? Do you have reliable places to get accurate and up-to-date info quickly if necessary, if you’re likely to take in species you don’t know as well?

- Brainstorm fundraising & marketing techniques. You’ll want ways to spread the word about your shelter & get attention from people who will be willing to donate and help you out. And of course, this will also help with finding new homes for the animals. 

- Do you have a good vet lined up? You could maybe find out if they’d be able & willing to give you discounts as a shelter/rescue, but that depends on your relationship with the vet.

- Make sure you’re familiar with quarantine practices & willing and able to put them into practice. All too often quarantine doesn’t get thought of or isn’t carried out as carefully as it should be. It’s a pain in the ass, but it can save a lot of trouble! Make sure you also have the space and supplies to do quarantine.

- A very important thing - set your limits. Set them before you start, make sure everyone agrees on them, and stick to them. One of the most common ways for a good rescue/shelter to end up in a big mess is to not stick to their limits on how many animals they can handle. Especially in situations where there’s a strong need & not a lot of alternatives, it’s really easy to go “well, just one more…” and to keep doing that until you’re overwhelmed. Figure out how many animals can fit in your space how many you can physically take care of each day (providing food, water, health checks, cage cleaning, and enrichment). Figure out your financial limits & stick to them as well. Even if it feels like “I could at least provide better than that…”, compromising the care of all of your animals to try & help just one more is going to set a bad precedent and lead you down a bad road.

- Along the same lines as that last one - make sure you have the ability to be realistic and make hard decisions. You can’t save them all. It sucks, but it’s just not possible. Always remember that death is not the worst thing that can happen - particularly a quick, painless death from euthanasia. Sometimes it’s the best option you can give an animal, and that’s okay. It’s hard, but you need to be able to do it. Another frustrating thing about some shelters/rescues is their determination that “every animal deserves a chance” or that “every life matters”. It sounds callous, but….there are a lot of animals in this world. There are overpopulations of some animals in places, where there’s far more animals than resources or people who want to help & care for them. When you’re making the choice between an animal that’s going to take tons of time & resources to be adoptable (or may never be adoptable) and being able to help 10 animals with the same amount of resources, which is the better option? This is an issue with some rescues that are determined to try & rehab people-aggressive dogs, especially ones with a bite record. Obviously it’s dependent on case, but… those are the types of decisions you’ll very likely encounter and have to make a call on.

- Keep in mind that education is a big part of any shelter’s goals. My hermit crab group is a great example of this. Educate people on what animals entail. Show them what good animal care is and easier ways to achieve it. A shelter’s goal is that one day, they won’t be needed anymore. I know it’s more of a fantasy than a realistic goal, but even so. The more animals you can keep in a home by educating their owner, the more animals you can help for people who just don’t have a choice, or animals that have already been dumped.

I looked at Han Hong Foundation's official statement, as well as some of the online chatter. Generally, they can be classified into two categories - those who accuse the group of disrupting actual rescue work, leveraging this for publicity etc; and those who are demanding transparency on the funds raised.

For 1), most of it are just antis. A fair bit of the criticisms are targeted at Yibo, saying he's just there for show, it's a PR move etc. For this group, I really have no words. If he does nothing, he'll be attacked. If he only donates, he'll be attacked as well (probably they will say things like as a Henan boy, why isn't he doing more etc). So he donated and volunteered in person, but he's being accused of putting up a show, milking it for publicity etc. Fortunately, I also see a lot of content on Weibo praising Yibo. People who are not fans, people who benefited from the volunteers' efforts and donations from fans.

I get really mad when I see the antis' comments. And people who blindly join in the discussion or reshare those post without thinking. Not just about this incident but on a daily basis. Both GG and DD are targets of such hate speak on a daily basis. But really, there's no point in getting angry or trying to argue. Recently I've taken to helping the C-BXGs report such content on Weibo as and when I see call-outs on the ST. The best way to deal with these antis is to report and block. On the other hand, to spread word of the positive things that are being said about them.

For 2), a fair bit of the comments are demanding for the Foundation to account for the 80million yuan that was raised. This was in response to the revelation that the supplies that the Foundation distributed over the past days were donations, meaning none of the funds have been utilised yet. Some people also brought up last year's Wuhan fundraiser - apparently not all funds were being accounted for etc. I didn't follow this so I don't know the specifics but it's a valid question. As with any charity and fundraising activity, transparency and accountability are very important.

But I also want to add on that disaster response isn't that straightforward. Often people only see or are focused on actions taken at the onset, the initial response and relief phase. But disaster response is a long term thing, not only the initial relief but there's also the subsequent rehabilitation, reconstruction etc. These take years to plan and accomplish. And obviously they require funds too so often times, it might take years before the funds are fully utilised. In the meantime, it might seem that the charity is just collecting donations but letting it sit there and not doing anything. Sometimes the organisation may need time to discuss with partners, conduct needs assessments etc in order to decide on the next phase of action and where to direct the funds to. And then the whole auditing process takes time too before the figures can be released to the public. I work in the non-profit sector so I know a thing or two. I don't know how these things work in China but the overall process should be similar

Anyway, my point is, not all the online comments in this debacle are invalid but netizens should think before they speak or blindly rage online. Like hello, the disaster is still ongoing, the team just concluded their rescue and relief operations. What kind of answers do you want at this point? And if you didn't even donate, all the more you have no right to demand for answers. Just be reasonable for once. As for those who criticise the team and Yibo, accusing them of doing things for show or leveraging a celeb for publicity, I really have no words. Just search your conscience. Even by donating 1 cent or a bottle of water, Yibo has already done more than them. All they've done is to donate pixels and add noise to the internet, all of which are unwanted.

I wanna say I hope Yibo won't be discouraged by this incident and put off from future charitable work but I know our boy is made of stronger stuff. This won't deter him at all. Just look at what he says in Wugan. He knows where his heart lies, those who truly love and care for him knows where his heart lies. That's good enough.

Han Hong Love Charity foundation puts out a statement regarding their work in Henan.

What kind of world are we living in that when someone does good, people question it and attack them. I think that the opinion that matters most in what happened are from the people of Henan— and not some no name on weibo or twitter— in their homes, comfortably lounging around and slandering their team and Yibo. If this is showing off, then why don’t we all show off like this?

The statement is very long, but these stood out to me:

We frankly accept the legitimate criticism of the Foundation and Teacher Han Hong, but for malicious slander, insult, and defamation, we will resolutely take legal measures in accordance with the law to hold relevant people accountable.

I feel bad for Bobo because in an interview he felt happy when he did community service. like he is just a regular citizen, helping people. and then this shit happens. I don’t know if he will ever participate publicly like that again.

At Last, Aid for Senior Nutrition That Offers More Than Crumbs Long before the coronavirus hit, nutrition programs that served the nation’s older adults struggled to keep up with a growing demand. Often, they could not. In Charlotte, N.C., and nine surrounding counties, for example, the waiting list for Meals on Wheels averaged about 1,200 people. But Linda Miller, director of the Centralina Area Agency on Aging, which coordinates the program, always assumed the actual need was higher. She knew some clients skipped meals because they couldn’t travel to a senior center for a hot lunch every weekday; some divided a single home-delivered meal to serve as both lunch and dinner. Some never applied for help. “Just like with food stamps, which are underused,” Ms. Miller said, “people are embarrassed: ‘I worked hard all my life; I don’t want charity.’” In Northern Arizona, state budget cuts coupled with only modest increases in federal dollars through the Older Americans Act also produced waiting lists. “We get flat funding and say: ‘Thank you! We didn’t get cut!’” said Mary Beals-Luedtka, director of the Area Agency on Aging that serves four largely rural counties there. “But flat funding is like a decrease. It’s not adequate.” Covid-19 made the task immeasurably harder. Across the country, it shut down the senior centers and church halls that served meals to healthier, more mobile seniors. Then those closures, plus shelter-in-place policies and fears of exposure, drastically boosted the number of older people who needed meals delivered. Many volunteers, also at risk because of age, stayed away. Sometimes, so did family members who had pitched in with shopping and cooking, now worried about infecting their elders. The Arizona team scrambled to distribute 150 percent more meals at home last year than the year before. “My staff was reeling,” Ms. Beals-Luedtka said. “It was crazy.” She still has about 70 people on a waiting list. Help has come, however. To the relief of administrators and advocates, the first three federal Covid recovery packages included substantial increases in funding for the Older Americans Act, which supports both congregant, or group, meals (which serve the majority of participants) and Meals on Wheels. The fourth infusion and the largest by far, $750 million, will come from the American Rescue Plan that President Biden signed last month. It brings the total increase for senior nutrition services to $1.6 billion. In fiscal 2019, they received $907 million. “It’s a victory and a validation of the value of this program,” said Bob Blancato, executive director of the National Association of Nutrition and Aging Services Programs. “Older adult malnutrition is an ongoing problem.” Separately, a 15 percent increase for everyone who qualifies for food stamps, more formally the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, will benefit an estimated 5.4 million older recipients. For years, advocates for older adults have lobbied Congress for more significant federal help. Although the Older Americans Act has enjoyed bipartisan support, small annual upticks in appropriations left 5,000 local organizations constantly lagging in their ability to feed seniors. From 2001 to 2019, funding for the Older Americans Act rose an average of 1.1 percent annually — a 22 percent increase over almost two decades, according to an analysis by the AARP Public Policy Institute. But adjusted for inflation, the funding for nutrition services actually fell 8 percent. State and local matching funds, foundation grants and private donations helped keep kitchens open and drivers delivering, but many programs still could not bridge their budget gaps. At the same time, the number of Americans over 60 — the age of eligibility for O.A.A. nutrition and other services — grew by 63 percent. About one-quarter of low-income seniors were “food insecure,” meaning they had limited or uncertain access to adequate food. And that shortfall was before the pandemic. Once programs hastily closed congregant settings last spring, a Meals on Wheels America survey found that nearly 80 percent of the programs reported that new requests for home-delivered meals had at least doubled; waiting lists grew by 26 percent. Along with money, the Covid relief legislation gave these local programs needed flexibility. Normally, to qualify for Meals on Wheels, homebound clients must require assistance with activities of daily living. The emergency appropriations allowed administrators to serve less frail seniors who were following stay-at-home orders, and to transfer money freely from congregant centers to home delivery. Even so, the increased caseloads, with people who had never applied before seeking meals, left some administrators facing dire decisions. In Northern Arizona, about 800 clients were receiving home-delivered meals in February 2020. By June, that number had ballooned to 1,265, including new applicants as well as those who had previously eaten at the program’s 18 now-shuttered senior centers. Clients were receiving 14 meals each week. By summer, despite federal relief funds, “I was out of money,” Ms. Beals-Luedtka said. She faced the grim task of telling 342 seniors, who had been added to the rolls for three emergency months, that she had to remove them. “People were crying on the phone,” she recalled. “I literally had a man say he was going to commit suicide.” (She reinstated him.) Even those who remained started receiving five meals a week instead of 14. Now, Ms. Beals-Luedtka awaits an estimated $1.34 million from the rescue plan, which will largely eliminate the waiting list, increase the number of meals for each recipient and help local providers acquire and repair kitchen equipment as senior centers reopen. In North Carolina last month, the Centralina agency, working with a food bank, started delivering grocery boxes — containing produce, canned food and other staples — to low-income seniors, using federal money from last year’s CARES Act. “They’re a huge hit,” Ms. Miller said. “I could never do that before.” It may seem unnecessary for senior nutrition programs to accomplish anything beyond feeding hungry older people, but research has demonstrated their broader impact. “Addressing nutritional needs isn’t good only for people’s quality of life,” said Kali Thomas, a researcher at Brown University whose studies have demonstrated multiple benefits to Meals on Wheels. “It improves their health.” These programs diminish loneliness and help keep seniors out of expensive nursing homes. They also may help reduce falls, although those findings were based on a small sample and did not achieve statistical significance. Interestingly, Dr. Thomas’s research found daily meal deliveries had greater effects than weekly or twice-monthly drop-offs of frozen meals, a practice many local organizations have adopted to save money. Frail or forgetful clients may have trouble storing, preparing and remembering to eat frozen meals. But the primary reason daily deliveries pay off, her study shows, is the regular chats with drivers. “They build relationships with their clients,” Dr. Thomas said. “They might come back later to fix a rickety handrail. If they’re worried about a client’s health, they let the program know. The drivers are often the only people they see all day, so these relationships are very important.” Congregant meals contribute to participants’ well-being, too, staving off food insecurity and providing socialization and healthier diets, a prepandemic evaluation found. So while program administrators relish a rare opportunity to expand their reach, they worry that if Congress doesn’t sustain this higher level of appropriations, the relief money will be spent and waiting lists will reappear. “There’s going to be a cliff,” Ms. Beals-Luedtka said. “What’s going to happen next time? ●  yoosung liking comments that say nice things abt saeran?? so good. honestly the sweet comments probably rlly do a lot of good things for saeran’s self esteem!! they cheer him up when he’s feelin sad i would think? definitely helps a lot on his rougher days.

●  misfireezeal mentioned donations so i started thinking about what donation money would go towards... when theyre not goin towards yoosung’s tuition (if he even stays in university at this point?? idk??)  or his cost of living, or equipment for the channel, they go to charities.

yoosung wants to help animals so they donate to animal rescue organizations and stuff like that. he wants to contribute help to other causes too so... he wants saeran to have some say where the money goes (and i mean saeran is the meme bringin in a lot of it so. ye.)

it’s important to saeran that they donate to organizations that provide help for mentally ill people--especially mentally ill youth. also organizations that help children in foster care or like... help kids that have been abused idk.. idk! idk...  things that can help young people that are going through some of the same things saeran went through

yoosung doesn’t announce the donations or anything because like... he doesn’t really feel the need to???? neither of them see a point in posting/talking about it. it just feels good to do nice things.

so he has no fucking experience and it’s. so good. yoosung and saeran are trying really hard not to laugh (and yoosung is failing)

idk what they make him play specifically but for some reason wii sports is flashing through my mind holy shit..... but actually its probably LOLOL or fallout 4 or something. idk. either way, he’s bad at it and they struggle to teach him how to even hold the controller properly

how they decide to move in is basically like... ok.

i imagine they probably get questions about their relationship a lot when they come out as a couple or when new viewers first find out about them. the flow of questions dies down after the initial reveal that they’re together but they still pop up every now and then

sometimes the questions get slightly intrusive like asking about their plans for the future which they kinda just ignore those until it becomes a really frequently asked question so they Have to answer it.. so they just say they don’t feel comfortable talking about it for the time being (because tbh they dont know lol)

and so...

probably a specific question that people ask A LOT (and have since saeran’s early appearances)  is if saeran lives with yoosung, or if he’s planning to.

because he’s at yoosung’s place so often. he has been since the channel’s early days, and they post videos and stream together fairly regularly, i guess?

there’s obviously more content of just yoosung doing his thing because it is his channel after all but content featuring saeran is definitely a frequent thing (even when it’s not their duo let’s play channel or whatever... saeran can still be seen in the background in a fair amount of yoosung’s usual LOLOL streams, too. )

so uh

at some point they’re just hanging out.. (off stream, not on video or anything. just them together.. like a date night or just to spend some time together. i dunno)

maybe cuddlin’ in bed or on the couch watching a movie, having a nice time. there’s comfortable silence

and yoosung never really gave it a lot of thought before, but lately... he and saeran are just really close and their relationship is so GOOD and he loves him a lot. he’s thinking over all this stuff and how often people ask if they live together and...

i mean, he thought about it on his own before he really took the viewers’ questions seriously.... them bringing it up isn’t what sparked it necessarily. 

he considered the possibility before, but he was always scared that bringing up moving in together would be too forward or pushy, and that saeran wasn’t ready for it, and that they would be rushing into things--going too fast. yeah. 

he got that ball rollin’ and was trying to take it slow but recently, everyone bringing the idea up jsut. fuckin. kicks that ball. so hard. it’s going full fuckin throttle. max speed. it’s out of control and he can’t stop it

and so in this... really comfortable quiet moment he just kinda blurts out

“why haven’t we moved in together yet?”

saeran is surprised obviously. he wasn’t expecting that at all

he has briefly entertained the idea of living with yoosung before, because he’s over so often anyways, and he wants to spend even more time together.... but he’s also scared for various reasons? 

such as his mental health issues, obviously. he’s also anxious that yoosung will get sick of him, or that he won’t be able to handle being around yoosung 24/7 and vice versa. he doesn’t want to get so easily annoyed and snappy like he does at home with saeyoung? he also doesn’t want to rush into things. idk. there’s a lot more reasons but those are some of them.

so when yoosung says this, he has no idea how to react??? so he just kinda mumbles “oh... uh.......”

yoosung panics like

 “god, im sorry, that was so stupid. um. it’s just... been on my mind a lot lately, i guess..? god! ah... forget about that! it was dumb...”  

he covers his eyes and kinda... hunches over. all embarrased and nervous and a little guilty because he doesn’t want to make saeran uncomfortable. he can’t even look at him. poor boy omg

saeran stays quiet for a long time, furrows his brows and chews the nail of his thumb and looks like he’s concentrating on something. after a while he pipes up, so quietly that yoosung can barely hear him

“i don’t think it’s dumb”

yoosung is. shocked. but also immediately hopeful! he perks up!!! looks at his bf incredulously like “you don’t?” 

saeran kinda... talks slowly bc he’s thinking hard about his words and says that he didn’t expect yoosung to bring it up really but he’d be lying if he said he hadn’t thought about it before

so they have an Important, Serious conversation about it and they both make sure that the other is %100 on board with it and ready to just. jump in and do it.

celebratory smooches ensue because they’re cute and happy and excited.

... i forget if yoosung’s place is a dorm or not. if it is, he gets his own apartment.

if it’s not, he stays in his apartment and saeran moves in there.

it’s small and kinda cramped and very far from a “forever home” but they make it work for now!! they’re happy that way... (maybe in the future they get a bigger place, which is nice because it makes it easier for saeran to have some privacy when he needs time alone.)

●  yoosung definitely takes short little videos or vlogs all the time and posts them on youtube and other social media

he takes one the day after they have the conversation mentioned above. and it’s just. “you guys.... i asked my boyfriend to move in and he said yes!! god, i was so scared! tell them how scared i was, saeran!” he points the camera at saeran who is reading a book and he just. 

idk he either just flips off the camera bc he’s busy and doesn’t want to be disturbed...

or

he looks it right at the lens and says “he was scared shitless. he literally shit his pants. it was gross. i had to h---” 

cue video going blurry as yoosung turns the camera away real quick paired with. shocked, loud shrieking. “SAERAN!!! DON’T SAY----” and then the video jsut kinda. cuts off there. 

(he still posts it but with some caption along the lines of “that didn’t actually happen. saeran’s just being a dick”)

and of course, there’s definitely multiple videos of the day they move saeran’s stuff in. yoosung records a bunch and puts them on his snapchat story or w/e... other social media too, so they can look back on them later... 

just cute little clips, like one of saeran’s room with all his stuff in boxes..... one of saeyoung and saeran (and maybe mc) loading stuff up into the car.... one of them putting the boxes in yoosung’s apartment....  a dumb one of saeyoung goofin’ off at yoosung’s place and mc doting on him..

one of saeyoung giving his brother the biggest bear hug ever. just. completely squeezing the life out of him and dramatically pretending to be all emotional (even tho he really is genuinely emotional inside omg) and saeran being annoyed and trying to push him away “god, let me go! you’re suffocating me!”

one where... they’re bringing in the last box.

and finally like. one w/ yoosung turning around to show his whole apartment, boxes everywhere, some of them already half unpacked. “phew... finally finished! the hardest part, anyway”

it’s cute.

●  the little videos are probably a thing that happens every now and then, even after that... he probably snapchats a lot of things in general bbbut a lot of the time it’s just. dumb, random videos of saeran.

some of them are stuff like:

 a close-up of both of them, taken with yoosung’s phone where they’re like “streaming in fifteen! we’re gonna play ____ today.” .... real cute stuff.

or just. shitty phone videos yoosung takes of saeran where like… yoosung says something really sappy joke or pickup line? idk. something really cheesy and terrible and wants to film saeran’s reaction.  and saeran looks over and his expression is just. dead inside. the camera zooms in real close on his face and he whispers “………………. im so sick of this Shi–”  the video cuts off there

probably lots of them chillin and having fun with the whole rfa crew

and. maybe one where the two of them are hanging out with saeyoung and mc and other pals and.. idk. one of them says something funny and they’re all laughing but yoosung zooms in on saeran who just.........ok i imagine that sometimes his more subdued laughs come out as like?? this huffy, kinda wheezy little giggle. he covers his mouth w his hand. and the video captures that. when yoosung posts it, ppl Freak out about it because it’s so uncharacteristically adorable...

there’s videos of them going on trips or just new places in general... going for hikes and exploring maybe.. idk. lots of cute stuff.

saeran takes one of yoosung when they’re at the spca?? or some place like that. idk (i dont like pet stores but maybe a pet store).. and.. yoosung just has his hands and face pressed to a glass partition/window/whatever that has a puppy behind it. maybe multiple puppies. and yoosung turns around w/ the Most desperate, pleading expression anyone has ever seen. (saeran knows he has to say no but it’s so hard omfg)

and obviously there’s lots of little clips of video game stuff. teasers of the game content itself or their playthroughs. maybe a video of one of them sitting on the couch or a computer chair playing a game and getting angry lol.... (or saeran getting frustrated w/ a handheld game that’s supposed to be really calm like... animal crossing. idk sorry i just love the idea of saeran having a 3ds and playing chill games like that to help him relax when he’s anxious omg)

.... there’s also lil videos yoosung takes but he decides that they are private, for his eyes only... little moments like one where they’re getting ready to stream and saeran’s adjusting one of the microphones 

and yoosung quietly says hey to get his attention, and saeran looks over and smiles real big and genuine w/ lots of love and tells him to “Stop goofing around. C’mon, put your phone down and help me finish setting up.” and it’s. sweet and happy and cute... yeah.

In celebration, I figured it was time to drop another Allegiance teaser. Archangel comes to us from Jack Norris. As usual, bear in mind that this particular section is draft material and not yet fully developed.

Archangel

Archangel is an organization started by Count Raphael Orzaiz, sometimes known as Orzaiz the Elder, to aid those without the power and influence that too often leads to exceptional action and attention for their troubles. In  2008, the eight year old heir to the Orzaiz family was kidnapped along with the nine year old son of the family driver, a young boy named Bakar. In a daring pre-dawn raid they retrieved the boy, killed the kidnappers, and exposed the mastermind behind the plot as a business rival of Orzaiz attempting to distract him from a particularly competitive business deal. As he hugged his son and praised his rescuers, he caught the sad and broken sight of his driver, whose son would never again return home. It was at that point Raphael made decision that has since saved countless lives.

Hiring Jonas Luther full-time, he tasked the man with creating an organization that would lend assistance to those without the good fortune to be born wealthy and privileged. Luther, himself a poor boy from one the worst neighborhoods in Chicago, threw himself into this task with enthusiasm and passion which surprised even his employer. With the Orzaiz fortunes backing him, he created a database of skilled freelancers, military personnel, various professionals, and even some criminals. Each candidate was selected for their professional and personal record of aiding others regardless of social or economic standing. Thus in 2009, Archangel was born.

Since then the group has worked to rescue kidnapped children, shut down human trafficking rings, protect small business owners from organized crime or corporate bullying, and numerous other activities. Archangel’s private status and the considerable influence their patron affords them allows the organization to work globally and often without regard for treaties and agreements that might block official intervention.

Recruitment

Archangel operatives are selected for their skill and drive to help others. The skills are anything that will assist in the various missions the organization undertakes. Combat skills are a common trait among many members, but expertise in computer hacking, field medicine, legal expertise, surveillance, and intelligence gathering are also highly prized. The organization doesn’t focus much on training; recruits are selected for their own skills far more often than they are taught essential ones. Many recruits are polymaths, able to score a headshot on the run, navigate a thorny issue of legal jurisdiction, hack a security system, or some other combination of useful skills. This focus on a handful of potent and hypercompetent operatives means that many who join Archangel are Talents, but this isn’t a requirement of membership. In truth, few within Archangel even understand much less make the distinction between a highly skilled “normal” operative and a Talent. For them, it’s all about results.

In addition to their skills, recruits must impress on Archangel a desire to aid others, especially the less fortunate. The group is more likely to recruit an ex-gang member who works with community outreach and neighborhood watch efforts than a veteran special forces operative who only works for the highest bidder. This moral component won’t substitute for the skills necessary to join, but those who don’t fit the profile won’t be sought out.

Many Archangel recruits have something in their past they are seeking to redeem or balance out. Some are former criminals seeking to protect those they once victimized, others are ex-military or intelligence who grew tired of serving the interests of nations while many normal citizens suffered. Others are fueled by personal tragedy that caused a change in perspective. A few are even victims helped by the organization in the past whose skills make them an asset. In any case, it’s a rare member who joins simply to risk their lives constantly to help the underprivileged and

Organization and Structure

Archangel is organized into cells which generally handle operations in a given area. Cells can be small, in some cases a single operative might be tasked with handling cases in an area. However, large cells of a dozen or more members are found in large population centers like Mexico City or Los Angeles. Most cells post advertisements in newspapers, social media sites, and other places that give contact information and offers to help in situations where no one else can or will. These efforts generate a lot of crackpots and scam artists, but a tested filtering process usually means that a handful of genuine clients are located on a regular basis. In truth, most cells are overrun with legitimate requests far more often than they’re sitting around waiting for the phone to ring.

Whenever an operation is called for in places where a Archangel cell doesn’t exist, the home office will select a cell whose skills and experience best suits the task at hand. Thus, they won’t send a bunch of ex-cops and a former coroner to rescue tourists from Somali pirates any more than they’d send a team of commandos to track a serial killer preying on the homeless. Any cell requiring outside assistance can usually receive it, though it might take some time as there’s rarely an idle operative in the group.

Archangel is headquartered in Barcelona, and the home office is run by Jonas Luther and various members of the original team that saved young Raoul years back. Luther and his crew don’t handle as many field operations as they once did, finding that recruitment, coordinating cells and locating clients takes up the bulk of their time. Count Raphael Orzaiz doesn’t involve himself with the organizations operations at all, save to write checks and occasionally point other interested philanthropists at the group. These donations along with the Count’s fortune give the group ample funding.

Goals and Methods

The goal of Archangel is simple: use their skills and resources to help those in need, particularly those who cannot secure aid elsewhere. Very few of its clients are wealthy or well-connected unless they find themselves the victim of forces with overwhelming power and influence. How an individual cell goes about helping someone is largely up to them; though the focus is always on assistance and not retribution. Thus a crime syndicate smuggling people to serve as slave labor might end up ruthlessly eliminated by a cell, but that’s an afterthought. The focus of such an operation would be to liberate captives and shut down the operation. Due to his past experiences, Count Orzaiz is ironclad on this goal; returning a kidnapped child or saving someone’s livelihood is always a priority. Justice or revenge is a luxury, though ones the group often manages to afford.

Methodology varies wildly with different cells and the whole organization has a “whatever works” attitude as long as overall goals are met. Operatives are encouraged to work with local authorities whenever possible because it makes missions go easier, but it’s not a requirement. In some locations with rampant corruption, such cooperation is even functionally impossible. A team of legal experts and some sympathetic politicians help keep members out of trouble in most cases, though if an operation goes horribly wrong the blowback could be severe. Given the stakes involved in many situations when Archangel is called, mistakes are something other people get to make.

Archangel treats those it helps as paying clients whose needs are the utmost priority, but they never accept payment. In rare occasions where an individual has the resources or willfulness to insist on paying, the funds are donated to a charity that helps those in a similar situation to the client. Thus, if Archangel liberates an unjustly accused activist languishing in a corrupt hellhole somewhere, any payments would go to organizations such as Amnesty International or the appropriate branch of the Æon Society. In fact, the Triton Foundation receives a noticeable influx of donations from Archangels efforts, a reality not lost on Æon and relations between the two organizations is generally favorable.

Advantages

Archangel’s greatest assets are its patron’s fortunes and its own people. Everything necessary for a mission can be purchased as needed, and many cells maintain a small armory, crime lab, and whatever else operatives might need to accomplish their goals. These resources are often cutting edge, though they rarely branch into the realm of “weird science” unless a cell member designs something using their own skills.

Operatives are extremely well-paid to avoid any temptation of bribery or corruption, but in truth this is usually unnecessary. Most Archangel members are devoted to the group’s mission and would likely do the job for nothing and a significant portion of member salaries go to supporting various charities. Many who work for the group find their bank account and assets growing as they jump frantically from one crisis to the next, and despite the group only being active for five years many of the senior members already have enough to retire comfortably. Despite this, the retirement and turnover rate for Archangel is quite low; these people are in it for the cause, not money.

Since three operatives were abducted and killed in 2010 during a disastrous mission that also cost the life of their client, all members have taken to wearing identification markers implanted with a tracking device. Typically the device is in the form of a medallion, charm, piece of jewelry, ring, or mundane item bearing the image of St. Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of the hopeless and helpless. Some have chips implanted surgically and  conceal any scar with a tattoo instead. This marking also help operatives from different cells identify each other in the field. These ambassadors for their species come from horrific circumstances, yet many learn to love again after receiving the care and kindness they deserve. But what many people don’t take into account is the relationship between the food and clothing industries — and how the choices we make can impact animals in ways we wouldn’t necessarily expect. Contrary to common belief, products like wool, down, and leather are more than just byproducts of animals who are already being raised and slaughtered for food. Instead, the demand for animal-based clothing fuels an industry of its own, and even helps keep the meat industry in business.

The only individuals who truly need these products, however, are the animals themselves. There are alternative, innovative ways for people to look and feel good, without compromising their values or causing harm to animals. And humanimals like Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart of New York City-based Vaute Couture are doing just that.

Vaute Couture describes itself as "the world’s first vegan fashion brand, founded with a mission of taking animals out of the fashion equation, by creating something better.” The company, founded and directed by Leanne, offers practical, fashionable, and sustainable alternatives to animal-derived products — demonstrating how easy it is to look good and feel good, all at the same time.

Last week, we had the privilege of working with Leanne and her team at our New York Shelter. With the animals as their muses, they conducted a compassionate photo shoot for their upcoming Winter LookBook — an opportunity to bring compassionate fashion to the mainstream. Together, we celebrated the incredible ambassadors for their species who inspire all of our work each day, and all we may accomplish when we put compassion first.

Choosing Compassionate Alternatives to Wool

While the majority of sheep we rescue are primarily raised for meat, there are some who are raised for wool production or for dual purposes.

Sadly, wool production is not as innocuous as many people would like to believe. While it’s easy to compare shearing a sheep to a human receiving a haircut, the unfortunate reality is that sheep are indeed harmed in the process.

Sheep shearers are paid per sheep, not per hour, which incentivizes them to rush through the job. This means that sheep are often nicked and cut during the process, and their wounds are often left untreated. And of course, in any situation where large numbers of animals are being raised for a product, it is impossible to treat each one as an individual apart from that product. They often go without the individualized care they need and deserve, and are slaughtered (or, in some cases, even abandoned) when their wool production has declined to the point where they are no longer considered useful.

Most of the world’s wool comes from Australia, where Merino sheep are the most prevalent breed. Merinos are bred to develop wrinkly skin; the more wrinkles on the sheep, the more wool they can produce. However, these wrinkles also make it easier for flies to lay their eggs, and the maggots can eat the sheep alive — a condition known as “flystrike.” In an effort to mitigate this, ranchers carry out a cruel practice called “mulesing” — which involves removing large slabs of flesh from lambs’ backsides, without anesthetic, to create a scarred area with no wrinkles or wool, this preventing moisture from accumulating and attracting flies. Sadly, these sheep endure a lifetime of suffering, all to give up a product that does not rightfully belong to anyone but them. And after all of this, these terrified animals are shipped overseas to be slaughtered in foreign markets, again when they are no longer deemed useful.

At Farm Sanctuary, however, we value sheep — and all farm animals — not for what they can give us, but for the unique individuals we know them to be.

Our rescued residents teach us that there is plenty of love to go around when we open our hearts. Joel sheep, rescued from terrible neglect last year, snuggles up with Leanne (above) and makeup artist Melissa (below). These days, Joel has nothing but love for his humanimal friends — and his incredible transformation demonstrates the power we all have to make a difference in the lives of those around us.

While we do need to shear most of our sheep residents each year — they are bred to produce more wool than their bodies can handle, so we shear them every spring to prevent them from overheating — we go to great lengths to make sure that the process is as calm and easy on them as possible. Sheep shearing at Farm Sanctuary is generally a three-day process, where we spend a lot of time with each individual sheep and keep him or her as comfortable as possible from start to finish.

And what do we do with all that wool? We provide it to area wildlife to use as they see fit. One year, we even donated it to help clean up an oil spill. Because, in reality, wool — and the products made by any animal — is not ours to use or profit from. In other cases, down is taken from slaughtered ducks and geese. These birds, like all “poultry” animals, are exempt from the Humane Slaughter Act; in other words, the law does not require them to be rendered unconscious before they are killed. After slaughter, the birds are placed into tanks of boiling water to remove the feathers — which, in many cases, are later used for down. But sometimes, the birds are still alive once they reach the tanks, and they are painfully scalded to death.

Anastasia demonstrates how easy — and glamorous — it can be to choose cruelty-free alternatives to products like down. Her feathered friends agree!

Whether commodities are taken from animals who are living or deceased, the reality is that these products are not ours to take — and that we can survive and thrive while supporting more compassionate alternatives instead. Today, Conrad demonstrates that farm animals are not objects or byproducts to use at our disposal — for dairy, meat, leather, or otherwise —  but are each someone, not something.

“Waggle addresses a sorely needed service which provides a fully transparent and legitimate crowdfunding platform to assist anxious pet guardians cover the cost of their veterinary bills.”
