Okay, so that anon turned out to be a deeply unpleasant person who readily put words in my mouth without reading anything else I had to say beyond the first paragraph or so.

Anon, if you see this, I hope you're able to better yourself. I was quite kind to you, and to receive such nastiness in return was a bit of a shock. It's pretty clear to me as such that you didn't come to me in good faith looking for an actual discussion between adults. You came to me with your nose in the air thinking I would fall at your feet for saying things both grossly incorrect and ableist.

I will somewhat address your issue with my response now, even though you probably won't read it.

Cats formed a symbiotic relationship with humans thousands of years ago, and over time, they became domesticated--and, yes, adapted for a different way of life than their wild ancestors had known. While cats can survive outdoors, as I said, they are at far greater risk of injury and death than indoor cats. Yes, even the barn cats you think so highly of. Were those cats indoors, where they belong, they would want for nothing and fear nothing.

It may be true that cats started as pest control, but that doesn't mean that modern cats are meant to also be pest control. The role domesticated animals play in society can and does change. Dogs are a great example of this. They aren't expected to catch their own food or make their own shelter, even though that was what their ancestors once did. Even working dogs have food provided to them and warm homes to return to. Even working dogs would struggle to survive in the wild. They are not wolves, and cats are not African wild cats.

Modern domestic cats are both predator and prey, and they aren't as adapted to survivng outdoors as they once were. While they are still incredible hunters, they aren't necessarily incredible survivalists--nor should they have to be. The world has changed since they were wild. There are more threats now than ever.

All of my family's cats, barring genetic abnormalities or cancer, have lived to be 18+. Even my vet is impressed. She tells us all the time that we've raised some incredible cats. Smart. Healthy. Full of love.

Our two indoor-outdoor cats almost didn't make it to that ripe old age, and once they became permanently indoors, they never wanted for the outdoor life in particular. They were kept engaged in other ways. They didn't need to hunt actual mice. They didn't need to breed and make more strays. They needed their favorite foods, their favorite people, and a safe, warm place where predators and other threats couldn't reach them.

Depending on who you ask, cats have been living as indoor pets anywhere from three hundred to just sixty years--both short periods of time on a geologic scale, but long enough for us to observe changes in cat behavior. Cats have adapted to meow at us for attention or food. They have adapted to seek comfort from us. Some cats have even developed separation anxiety from the trauma of losing a human companion. That symbiotic relationship exists to this day. There's research suggesting that a cat's purr can heal us. That just petting them can reduce stress. That cats are healthy for us.

I don't own cats. I have them, the same way I have a mother and a father. I might say I own them from time to time, if only because that is the common parlance. My cats are not "ornaments" for my amusement. They're members of my family. I love them as such, and I've rarely met a cat parent that doesn't feel the same. In fact, I find people who do not love their pets to be utterly bizarre. The relationship between human and pet is meant to be mutually beneficial. The animal receives care and love, and the human is rewarded by care and love in return.

(Even reptiles, which don't necessarily feel love, can reward their humans in other ways, such as trust. Earning the trust of a reptile is an absolute delight.)

You seem to think that if a cat isn't outside hunting its own food, it's an "ornament". I think you have a deeply disturbing view of domestic life. I also think you don't know how to care for a cat, and that's why you think they can only be happy outdoors. Keeping them indoors is too much work. You can't be bothered to play with them. Just throw them out and let them make their own enrichment. That's the attitude far too many people have, and it's why I see so many family pets lying on the side of the road.

What it's like keeping them as cats part 2:

◇Summary: A continuation of my first headcanon! This time with Venti, Xiao and Zhongli as your cats. My wording may be slightly unhinged at times so just a heads up!

Venti:

◇My brother once told me that Venti reminded him of Thurston Waffles (please check that adorable fluffball out) and till this day the thought hasn't left my head, so because of that Venti is most likely a Siberian cat that may just be on the smaller side with white fluffy fur.

◇Venti is rather mischievous when left to his own devices, thankfully nowhere near Childe's level of chaos since he does have his lazy moments but you may find a few things out of place here and there with his toys being thrown about. He never bothers you when he thinks that you're busy but the moment you show any signs of having a slither of free time you can bet that he's meowing his heart out to you, trying his best to get your attention. The quickest way to quiet your little opera singer down is by carrying him close to you and smothering him in affection.

◇Venti is a rather lazy cat, usually choosing to sleep the day away under any ray of sunshine he can find in your home but on the off chance that he is in the mood to be active, he really does enjoy taking walks with you. You'll know that he wants his walkies by grabbing his walking harness by himself, plopping said item down by your feet and meowing loudly as if to convince you to bring him outside with you. During your walks, Venti likes to meow at any strangers he comes across, as if giving them a friendly greeting.

◇Venti is a very friendly cat so he's always more than happy to see you bring guests over. He adores the attention he receives and is very patient when being handled. If there's a particular guest that he really likes or is familiar with, he may meow and paw at them to pick him up and haul him around. He's honestly such a spoiled little furball but nobody seems to be able to deny his cries when they look at him with his big ole' eyes.

◇His favourite time to hang around you is in the kitchen, just like Diluc. However, unlike Diluc, this lil' shit actually tries to steal your food. He usually hovers by your feet when you're cooking, hoping to snatch a bite of whatever it is you're making, but if by chance nothing falls, then he may resort to stealing tiny nibbles of your food when you're eating. Luckily, he's usually satisfied after getting a taste and will leave you alone after you scold him.

Xiao:

◇I think we all know what kind of cat Xiao would be. He's definitely a short-haired black cat, most likely a stray you picked up and cared for if I'm being honest.

◇Xiao likes to keep to himself for the most part but you realize that he often does so while being in the same room as you, usually hanging out in the darker corners of said room as if to blend in and remained unhidden. He tries his best to remain uninterested and unaware of your presence, as if he isn't following you around, but the moment you choose to move somewhere else, he's always hot on your tail.

◇Xiao isn't really fond of going outside, not really having the most pleasant of memories from his time as a street cat, so he much prefers being indoors, thank you very much. Though, despite being accustomed to a more domestic life, Xiao still has rather strong predatory instincts so he does have a tendency to hunt down any creature he finds lurking around the house. It's usually bugs that he catches and he'll always bring them to you as if to show you what he did. You can never hear it well because of how quiet it is, but Xiao will always purr when he brings you his latest victim, as if proud to have been able to protect you from a foreign being in your home.

◇Lord, Xiao hates when you have guests over but he also despises leaving you alone. He'll usually hide himself in an empty room to avoid being seen by anyone but the moment you let out any noise that he deems distressing you can bet that he's running over to where you are, claws barred and ready to fight anyone who may be hurting you. When you see him in such a state, please comfort and reassure to him that you're safe and unharmed. He may not seem like it but he cares a lot about you and is very protective.

◇His favourite time to hang around you is definitely when you're asleep. Bedtime is the only time you'll find Xiao willingly cuddling up beside you, but not for the reasons you may initially think. You see, when you're asleep it's easier for Xiao to take care of you because you're not moving around too much. In your sleepy state, it's much easier for him to protect you, something he's very adament on doing ever since you took him in and patiently cared for him.

Zhongli:

◇I know I've picked a bunch of weird cat breeds to represent the others but Zhongli's may be the oddest to some. I totally see him as a black Oriental Shorthair, they're very mature looking but in the most adorable way possible. Everything about them screams Zhongli to me.

◇Zhongli likes to keep close to you when he can, and he's very well-behaved while he does so. He's very mellow thanks to his old age so it doesn't take much to make him happy. One sure fire way to entertain him though is definitely by talking to him. He's a very chatty mister when he wants to be and he always perks up when you talk back to him as well. You once kept a conversation going with him for a whole hour, it was honestly rather entertaining.

◇Zhongli really appreciates his usual walks, and will often times hint that he would like to go out on one by meowing a little louder than usual by the front door, pawing at it a bit as if to show you what he wants. When outside he sniffs and observes everything he comes by, ocassionally tugging at his harness to go somewhere he finds especially interesting. He loves collecting shiny objects and pretty stones while out on his walk with you and is always delighted to see you hold onto the things he gifts you.

◇Zhongli doesn't mind if you have guests over, enjoying the sudden change in atmosphere if those you bring over are good friends or close family members of yours. He has a tendency to find himself on the lap of the more quiet guests you have in your home. Meowing in response to them if they ever decide to humor him by cooing or talking to him. He likes making sure none of your guests feel left out if others are talking.

◇His favourite time to hang around you is usually when you're watching something, be it on your tv, phone or computer. You found out that he really enjoys documentaries out of everything the two of you watch together, his eyes will always stay focused on the main topic at hand, never breaking his gaze from the screen unless you call out to him. It's honestly really cute watching him concentrate so hard on something he may not really understand.

I think some cats do need to be able to go outside, maybe some of them are happy as indoor cats but cats are all different. I don’t think they should be allowed in the street or where they can’t be seen but my cat has no desire to go beyond the back garden and we check for birds before she goes out and supervise her while she’s in the garden. She has indoor stimulation and we play with her but she still meows constantly and even leaps up at us so she can go outside.

I think there is stimulation outside that can’t compare to inside, being able to smell grass and plants, run around in the fresh air etc. My previous cat was the same and it wasn’t because she wasn’t played with enough because she wasn’t very playful, she just wanted to go outside to lie in the grass and sunbathe. She never went beyond the garden either. I think it’s difficult when you have a cat who wants to go further afield though, especially if they don’t want to wear a harness.

I feel the need to clarify here that an indoor cat is not necessarily being kept indoors constantly, in fact I’d caution against that. They’re being let outside, just supervised in their own back yard, or unsupervised in an outdoor enclosure. If they want to to further afield then they absolutely do need to be on a harness, whether they like or not, they will almost always adjust. There is nothing wrong with what you’re doing, outside, supervised time is great for cats, it’s free roaming cats who are left to roam on their own which is the issue.

I appreciate that you’re saying that not all cats are well suited to life indoors, but no cat is well suited for life outdoors, where there are hazards we can’t control. More than this, they’re non-native predators who cause absolute havoc on local ecosystems, a factor which is often ignored in these conversations, despite it being a bigger issue than the injury and death rates of outdoor cats, which are still far too high. Domesticated cats represent one of the key threats to small wildlife, particularly birds. We just can’t know for sure what our cats are doing, what risks they’re taking and who they’re killing unless they are supervised.

Of course there is stimulation they can only get outside, just like there is stimulation that only dogs can get outside, but we don’t let them free roam, we let them access that stimulation supervised or on a leash. Rabbits need time outside too, and pretty much all domesticated pets benefit from time spent out of doors. Cats are the only pets we make the argument that they somehow inherently need to be let roam around all day, I realise that isn’t at all what your saying here, but it’s the mentality we are up against when we advocate for indoor cats.

“Oh, Gemma, what have you gotten yourself into?”

You first noticed the bump on accident as you were preparing your orange tabby’s food. Gemma had become impatient at your slow pace when she stood up on her hind legs to claw at your thigh. You narrowed your eyes when you examined her closely. You always attributed her general plumpness to just her living her life deliciously but then you realize that you had gotten it all wrong.

Gemma is pregnant.

How could this be? You always kept the tabby indoors where she wouldn’t get into risky behavior and get herself hurt. You prided yourself in being the best cat parent, always keeping an eye on her whenever she was within your eyesight. However, you couldn’t always track her movements and you never trusted home security devices ever since they were introduced.

Then you remember the unbearable heat weave the swept across Detroit in mid-August. You couldn’t help but crack the window just a few inches...

Oh, gosh, Gemma must’ve escaped through the window of opportunity to explore the outside world. Now, you watch your cat give birth to her first litter of kittens inside your cramped closet. You close your eyes as you hear the small movement coming from within the box you had prepared beforehand for Gemma. You didn’t know how you would be able to take care of kittens with your new job that demanded more of your undivided attention and time. Taking care of Gemma was one thing but kittens required supervision, special care that was vastly different than an adult cat, and you weren’t sure if you can do this alone.

You move your head to face the new mother licking one of her kittens.

“Hold on a second,” you say underneath your breath and inch closer towards the cardboard box. While Gemma mindlessly tends to the kitten, you squint your eyes at your revelation.

“Gemmy, you little bastard, tell me you did not fuck the hot neighbor’s cat.”

Her soft little meow followed by her eyes closing a tiny bit gave you all the answers that you needed.

The kittens fur, although not fully set yet, were a shade of orange and gray with some kittens having orange paws. They all had gray tortoiseshell fur from head to toe. You rise from your crouched position to look over at your window. From the outside you can see the house lights at your neighbor’s and suddenly you feel like you’re in “The Great Gatsby” looking off into the light of the East Egg. Even from the distance you can make out the silhouette of the Russian Blue father.

You bite the bottom of your lip in contemplation.

Nines was more of an anomaly, a concept, rather than an actual real person. He felt like a ghost of sorts, always working odd hours down at the Detroit Police Department downtown. In your initial meeting, you found out that he’s an android after your housewarming gift of a pie was for nothing. However, Nines was thankful and even kept the damn thing. After that, you two never talked to each other but that didn’t stop you from coming up with silly daydreams that involved a lot of domesticity bliss and then some...

You were kind of dreading bringing this subject up.

A week goes by and you’re about nearly had it up to here with the kittens’ constant crying while you’re trying to fall asleep. Your work as a pharmacist had you constantly on your feet and all you wanted to do when you got home was relax. To be deprived of what little free time you had to tend to these kittens was overwhelming. Gemma was only one cat mother so it had to be all hands on deck to help her out.

As you plop your ass on the hardwood floors, you knew enough was enough. You’ve noticed the soft glow coming from Nines’ house beforehand and you had to seize the moment. You gather up the cardboard box with both Gemma and her kittens with your intent to march up to Nines’ door and demand some sort of child support. Cat food, kitten formula, hell, you would even settle for back massage at this point. All you needed was some peace of mind and to sleep for a one solid fucking hour.

The moment the door opens, the box of cats suddenly becomes heavy in your arms and your skin begins to form goose flesh all over. Those are some very gray eyes.

Nines tilts his head and says your name. “Are you aware of the time?”

You blink frantically, whooshing away those romantic thoughts and remembering why the hell you came here anyways. Gemma lets out a small meow and Nines looks down at the cardboard box.

“Thanks for answering your door at such a weird hour. I, um, I think your cat might have gotten my cat pregnant? And by the looks of her kittens, your cat is the only viable option.”

Nines draws closer to the box and reaches inside to pick up one of the kittens. He gazes into Gemma’s eyes, his own slight hooded, and pitches his voice up a few octaves. “Do you mind?”

Gemma answers him with another meow and exposes her belly towards him. Nines nods his head, a small smile forming at his lips, then secures the tiny kitten in the palm of his hand. The glow from the lights inside illuminates the gray and orange mewling kitten and you did not how you were keeping your cool; feeling an urge to place the box down and asking if you could kiss him after watching his soft behavior with your Gemma. Suddenly, a familiar gray cat appears at the door frame and brushes up against Nines’ leg.

“Oh my gosh!” you screech out in your tender animal voice. You can’t help but smile when you see the Russian Blue in the flesh for the first time. You gently place the box down on the porch and kneel down to get a better look. However, the gray cat did not want nothing to do with you because once his eyes lock onto Gemma, he immediately brushes past you and into the cardboard box with your cat. You watch the cat nuzzle his head against hers, licking her head as a gentle hello. Your heart melts at watching your cat receiving affection that you always yearned for.

Nines kneels down to place the kitten from his hands back with their mother. You two watch in fascination at the interaction between both of your cats. You reach over to pet the Russian Blue and for a second you thought it may be a bad idea but the moment your hand reaches his fur, he accepts you.

“His name is Apollo.”

“Her name is Gemma.”

You let out a snort as you witness Nines reaching over to pet your cat. She leans into his touch and you never wanted to be a cat more than right now. You take a seat on the porch and draw your legs closer to you.

“So, you think Apollo is the father?” It’s more of a rhetorical question than anything and you hear Nines’ let out a soft laugh under his breath. He takes a seat in front of the box and places his hands in his lap. You two watch in silence as Apollo begins to wash one of the kittens with his tongue and settles into the other corner of the fairly large box. You wish you could enjoy the peaceful moment until a pain shoots up through your neck from your spine. You wince at the sudden pain, rubbing the back of your neck and closing your eyes.

“Are you alright?” Nines asks, his voice conveying concern for your well-being. You hadn’t have someone ask if you were okay in a long time and you almost become shocked at the question.

“Just peachy,” you sigh out, “Well, actually, no, not really. With my work at the pharmacy, it always seems like I close then a few hours I have to open. I thought I could be a good cat parent and balance the two but...I didn’t think kittens could be this hard.”

Nines’ shifts his position to give you his full attention. You look up from the box to watch him closely.

“I would like to help you in any way possible.”

Your jaw nearly drops at his proposition. You must have made a face when he speaks up again. “I want to be there for you and Gemma.”

You place your hand over your heart and nod your head in near disbelief. You let out a tiny laugh then look back at Nines.

“So you want to raise a cat family with me?”

The corner of Nines’ mouth forms a small smile. “It would be my pleasure.”

You two work around your busy lifestyle. On days you know you will have to wake up early, Nines comes over to pick up Gemma and the kittens so you can have some quietness for once. Sometimes when Nines would text you about staying late at work, you would let yourself into his house to take his cat with you to stay over. You would go over with them in tow in order to have a play date with Apollo which made for a perfect opportunity to get to know Nines a bit more personally.

You couldn’t believe all it took was Gemma fucking Apollo to have Nines’ pin you up against his wall pressing hot kisses against your neck.
