It's baffling to me how many people suddenly think ScarVi are masterpieces because they run better on OVERPRICED NEXT GEN HARDWARE.

Yeah, no shit they run better on NEXT. GEN. HARDWARE. You know what the Switch 2 doesn't fix? All of the fundamental flaws that make ScarVi bad games in the first place.

I'm replaying Violet at the moment, and let me tell you, I wish I wasn't. Deleting my completed save file was a fucking mistake.

On the original Switch, the performance is WORSE than it was when I played it December of 2022. When I first played it, I actually had a decent experience as far as performance was concerned. Now I lag if I even LOOK at Levincia.

The graphics are still ugly as sin, and a plethora of graphical glitches are still present. In fact, glitches in general are still common.

The Pokemon hit boxes are still far too large, and the battles are far too slow, meaning I'm wasting a LOT of time running away from wild encounters I DIDN'T EVEN TOUCH.

The gyms are still boring as hell. The challenges are piss easy. I miss when Pokemon games treated kids like they weren't fucking braindead. We had actual puzzles growing up, and it's pathetic that the SWSH and ScarVi generations got this slop.

The difficulty curve is still ??? We go from the easiest gyms and Elite 4/Champion in Pokemon history to fucking??? SADA/TURO??? They aren't hard if you know what you're doing, but I can see how they'd blindside a new player! Eri too! All of the other Team Star bases are fine, and suddenly Eri is an absolute monster! She's the only Team Star member I've ever seen a Nuzlocker actually wipe on! Again, this is after playing a game seven-year-olds could beat without breaking a sweat!

(Sada/Turo and Eri were probably the only base game fights I actually enjoyed specifically because of their difficulty. My issue is that they're a difficulty SPIKE that can catch new players off guard in a bad way.)

WHY DIDN'T EITHER OF THE DLCS ACTUALLY ADDRESS ANY OF THE PLOT HOLES??? WHY DOES SCARLET FEEL LIKE SUCH AN AFTERTHOUGHT COMPARED TO VIOLET STORYWISE???

I 'dunno, man. The old gens weren't perfect, far from it, but they felt like GAMES. When I struggled, it felt good to eventually succeed, because I knew it was by my own merits. When I struggle now, it's against glitches and giant hitboxes. It's not the good kind of frustrating.

The kids of today deserve better.

Penny's design is really cute, I'd wear the fuck out of her outfit, but why isn't she in uniform? I know she just came back from Galar when we first meet her, but she STAYS out of uniform THE WHOLE GAME.

The best part is that I'm on Glimepiride, not Insulin. If I can keep my diabetes regulated with just that, I'll be VERY happy.

That may be possible, if I continue to avoid sugary drinks and foods. I don't eat a lot of sugary snacks, and last I checked, I'm usually eating at a calorie deficit, so I should continue losing weight for a bit. Once I get back to walking when the weather cools down, that'll help too.

Overall, pleased with my progress. Fingers crossed it stays steady.

I love Master for many reasons, and here's another.

So a lot of demonic names sound fucking WILD to humans. Of course, since demons have begun settling in the human world, human cultures have naturally bled into Hell over time, so you have your typical Alices and Coralines and maybe even a few Marks out there somewhere. By and large, though, demons prefer a lot of Greek and Latin, and they also tend to name their children after prominent figures in demonic society or history.

So, for example, your kid might go to school with ten Mammons and fifteen Lucifers. Then you'll also hear quite a few names like Accipiter or Sparaxis; Accipiter is derived from the Latin word for "hawk", while Sparaxis is derived from the Greek word meaning "to tear", both suitably demonic in sound and meaning. Then there are nonsense names like Hexater or Jennexis that sound almost like they may have been derived from some human language, but have no real meaning in any.

And then there's fucking Eugene "Master" Sinclair.

Actually, I'm not done talking about Pokemon.

As fun as Legends Arceus was, I think I've gone back on my opinion re: open-world Pokemon games. I don't think Pokemon is a great choice for open-world.

Past Pokemon games had tight, condensed level design where everything was intentional. There were no dead ends without reward. Each item was placed with care.

ScarVi and Legends, on the other hand, have the same issue as many open-world games. Sure, the maps are expansive, but they're empty--and they didn't even have the benefit of good graphics like BotW/TotK. In those games, I often find myself visiting empty places because of their beauty. There's utility in those barren spaces. Not so in Pokemon, because everything looks like ass.

Personally, if they aren't going to bring Legends Arceus' out-of-battle catching mechanics or implement level scaling, I'd rather they nix the open world and go back to purposely designed levels. There's not any point to it if there's still a set gym order and you have to get into a SLOWASS BATTLE to catch the 'mons roaming around.

Speaking of Pokemon, I do hope Legends ZA is good. Legends Arceus had its flaws, but it was an absolute joy to play. It revitalized my love of Pokemon.

So while I'm trying not to get my hopes up, I definitely have my fingers crossed.

I know we make fun of this concept all the time, but I do actually find well-done "dark/edgy" reimaginings of the children's media I grew up with to be fascinating.

Pokemon and MLP are especially fun to explore in more realistic, gritty settings, because both lend themselves well to those settings. Pokemon is a universe full of ultra-powerful animals, many with human-levels of intelligence, who could (and canonically have) easily cause destruction to human society on a mass scale. MLP, meanwhile, is a universe where incredibly powerful magic and insanely dangerous magical creatures exist alongside non-magical creatures, and no one bats an eye at it.

I think that's why so many people are drawn to these dark reimaginings. It's not about shocking the audience; it's about taking a universe that should, by all rights, be an absolute shitshow and making it one. It's an exercise in creativity and a way for real people to connect to otherwise fantastical worlds in a more grounded way.

Of course, that's only if it's done well. There's a lot of slop out there, but if you take the time to sift through it, you can find some gems.
