I'm a fan of traits & trait mods and I really liked Atomtanned's mod /based on Dill's Turn-Ons & Turn-Offs/. This is quite an extensive edit - I just wanted to adjust it a little for my game and once I started I couldn't stop xD
Atomtanned's Trait-Based Chemistry EDIT
& (optional mod) ONLY TO Chemistry
⚡ Download: SFS ⚡BOX
11.11.2024 third UPDATE of Chemistry Mod. Fixed: Loner not triggering Introvert TO, Alien genetics trigger Alien TO correctly, Facial hair TO triggers correctly, Hats do not trigger Intellect TO, Cologne doesn't trigger Occult TO. Thanks for the fixes go to @episims . Correct file has "Update3" in the name
*Archive contains PDF file with detailed list of changes (added / removed stuff) and a few notes.
🟢 Trait-based Chemistry mod edit is available in 7 Languages: English, German, Finnish, Polish, Swedish, Russian, French
❕ New stuff: added Facial Hair TO (replaces Daydreamer), Business Shark TO (was: Serious), Expressive TO (was: Unique). Increased hobby and interest requirements from 5 to 8 pts, Formal wear added to Stylish TO - and more...
I also included an optional mod that switches off Zodiac / Aspiration chemistry and balances out the chemistry bolts gain - so it makes chemistry betwen Sims much less complicated. Obviously it will only be useful for those who like to control every aspect of their Sims romantic lives. Details under the cut.
You'll need Traits /and stuff required for these to work/.
Credits: @atomtanned , @lilbabydilljr , Epi for their TO replacements, @lazyduchess for Lua script
@peanuttysims for No Zodiac & Aspiration attraction (MTS2 link)
I used TS4 icons, icon mashups/ edits, and my own.
Thanks: @tvickiesims , @vegan-kaktus , @lilakartoffelbrei . Special thanks to @episims for all the support 💎🤗
*This is for The Sims 2
More under the cut:
Trait-based Chemistry mod
It will replace original TS2 turn-ons and turn-offs with entirely new ones (only hair colors and fitness/fatness are unchanged!).
It conflicts with NickM406's No More Loading the * Family mod , and Tunaisafish’s Attraction Fix, make sure you don't have tunaisafish_fix_attractiontraits package in your Downloads.
🟢 It's compatible with mods that change /or switch off Zodiac chemistry, Aspiration chemistry, or both.
⚡TURN-ONS / TURN-OFFS:
Note: I've added and removed some stuff, for example Plantsims and Bigfoot from 'Occult' TO, and Zombies from 'Undead' TO!
(This is an edit of the list posted by Atomtanned: )
Adventurous: 3 vacations, Adventurous, Daredevil, Sailor, Brave
Alien: Trait, skin, eyes
Animal Lover: 2 pet friends, Animal Lover, Cat Person, Dog Person, Equestrian
Artistic: Artistic, Avant Garde, Photographer's Eye, Savvy Sculptor, Flower Arranging/Pottery/Sewing silver badge, Arts & Crafts hobby, Creative skill
Athletic: Athletic, Equestrian, Loves to Swim, Sports/Fitness hobby, Body skill
Business shark: Born-salesperson, Ambitious, Mean Spirited, Snob, Workaholic
Charismatic (charisma): Charismatic, Irresistible, Schmoozer, Star Quality, Charisma skill
Cultured (bookish): Avant Garde, Bookworm, Film & Literature Hobby
Expressive: Excitable, Childish, Party Animal, Dramatic, Over-Emotional, Diva
Facial hair
Fitness / Fatness - original
Foodie: Natural Cook, Cuisine hobby, Cooking skill
Hair colors - original
Indoorsy: Bookworm, Computer Whiz, Couch Potato, Hates the Outdoors, Film & Literature Hobby, Games Hobby
Infamous (bad reputation): Bad Reputation*, Evil, Mean-Spirited
Intellect (high IQ): Genius, Logic Skill
Introvert (reserved): Brooding, Loner, Unflirty, Shy, No sense of humor, Grumpy, Socially Awkward, < 2 Outgoing personality points
Laid Back (slacker): Couch Potato, Mooch, Slob, < 2 Active personality points
Musical: Natural Born Performer, Star Quality, Virtuoso, Music & Dance hobby
Occult (mystical): Werewolf, Witch, Fairy, Mermaid, Supernatural Fan
Outdoorsy: Angler, Green Thumb, Loves the Outdoors, Sailor, Gardening badge, Fishing badge, Nature hobby
Outgoing (social): Irresistible, Flirty, Natural Born Performer, Party Animal, Social Butterfly, > 8 Outgoing personality points
Plant Lover: Eco-Friendly, Gatherer, Green Thumb, Vegetarian, Flower/Gardening badge, Plantsim, Fairy
Rebellious: Daredevil, Inappropriate, Hot-headed, Rebellious.
Stylish (elegance): Snob, Diva, Irresistible, Cosmetology badge, Fashion interest, Formal wear
Technology: Servo, Bot Fan, Computer Whiz, Handy, Vehicle Enthusiast, Robotics silver Badge, Mechanical skill
Tidy: Neat, Cleaning skill, > 8 Neat personality points
Undead: Ghost*, Vampire
Well-Liked: Good reputation*, Friendly, Good, Proper, Nurturing.
*"Ghosts" = sims turned into playable ghosts, with Ghost trait (and Mermaids are sims with mermaid trait, but ofc you don't need these to be able to use this mod).
*Known issue: Servo (as such) doesn't trigger this TO. That has been fixed.
🔸 Hobby requirements in Dill's / Atomtanned's versions (as well as interest) were set to 5 points, which is kinda an average in my game. I don't want TOs to trigger too easily so I've increased these to 8 points, just like Skill point requirements.
Update: I've removed One True Hobby checks, so now only actual hobby enthusiasm points matter for triggering TOs.
I also increased good reputation requirement from 30 to 60.
Tumblr media
Above is the comparison of original vs new TOs, in the exact order.
FYI I've fixed the little mistake I've found in the mod - in my version stylish TO works as it should.
If you have any questions about how the game calculates attraction, read this.
And here's free version (SFS) of my buyable ReNuYu potion default, will be useful if you'd like to correct TOs for all your Sims.
"ONLY TO Chemistry" mod
Conflicts with No Zodiac Chemistry by Belladovah , chemistry mods by Peanutty (it incorporates their "No zodiac and no Aspiration"mod) and any other that contain Attraction Constants BCON and Attraction Tuning BCON.
In unmodded TS2 game, interests and skills do not play part in attraction. Trait-based chemistry changes that only to some extent because Zodiac and Aspiration are more important. To make TOs the crucial attraction factor in my game, I disabled Zodiac / Aspiration Chemistry, and tweaked bolt requirements.
This mod makes chemistry between Sims straightforward and TO-based however various bonuses to attraction also apply (!), like Beauty Wish, Vacation bonuses, bonus for very good rep or penalty for extremely bad reputation (even if your Sim likes bad guys, they will be put off by Dirty Dirtbag status, and enticed by extremely good rep). Anyways, if you use this mod and your Sims have no other attraction bonuses, then:
if one Sim has a turn-on towards the other, and the other has none, it results in no bolts
if one Sim has two turn-ons towards the other, and the other has none, Sims have one bolt chemistry
if one Sim has a turn-on towards the other, and the other has a turn-off, it results in negative chemistry
if a couple has single turn-ons towards each other, it gives them one-bolt chemistry
couple has three turn-ons, that gives them two bolts
couple has three turn-ons, one turn-off, that gives them one bolt
couple has double turn-ons, they have three-bolt chemistry
Special bonuses granted by mods for certain Traits like the "irresistible" still matter of course.

do you have some favourite go-to recipes? i would love any of your recommendations!! xx
we eat the same few things on rotation in our house, as I do all the cooking, and I like a) one-pot meals, and b) pasta, preferably. most of these are fairly low effort but you get a lot of bang for your buck flavour-wise, and they're endlessly customisable!
also, listen, I don't do measurements. follow your heart and taste as you go.
the tiktok viral baked feta pasta from like 4 years ago ingredients: plum or cherry tomatoes, a block of feta (or boursin if you're feeling flush), garlic, pasta optional extras: spinach, cannellini beans, chili crisp recipe: whack your tomatoes, sliced garlic, and olive oil in a big dish. nestle your feta in there. I like to add a tin of drained cannellini beans at this point to bulk it out/cut down on the pasta/make the texture confusing, but you don't have to. stick it in the oven at like 180-200C for half an hour ish. after half an hour boil your pasta. retrieve your oven dish, stir everything up to desired consistency (I'm a chunk girl). you can add spinach while you do this for extra greenery, or a massive spoonful of chili crisp for heat and crunch, but it's good on its own. add the pasta and some pasta water if you need. voila. you simply cannot go wrong.
gochujang and hummus pasta ingredients: gochujang (this keeps forever in the fridge so it's a good kitchen investment), a tub of hummus, garlic, white onion, parm optional extras: parsley recipe: chop onion and garlic, sling them in a pan with butter and a splash of EVOO. when the onion is sufficiently sweaty and nice, add a dollop of gochujang (the bigger the dollop the spicier the end result) and stir it all in, followed by the whole tub of hummus. boil the pasta. add the cooked pasta to the pan, along with some pasta water, a shit load of grated parm, and garnish with parsley. my friend sent me a vegan version of this recipe about a year ago and I've made the non-vegan version roughly once a week since. it is so fucking delicious. butter bean thing ingredients: butter beans, garlic, red onion, tomato paste, cream/double cream/greek yog, lemon, sourdough/nice crusty bread optional extras: parsley recipe: throw chopped garlic and onion in a pan with butter and EVOO and really let them sweat it out. add tinned butter beans WITH THE JUICE. yes, I know. add in a few good squirty piles of tomato paste and stir, then let it all heat through. at this point start toasting your crusty bread of choice because I ALWAYS forget until the end and then I'm rushed. I recommend splurging for the good bread, slathered with melty butter. add whatever creamy thing you have to hand (the og recipe I saw said double cream, but I usually have greek yoghurt in and that does the job) to the beans, along with some lemon juice, garnish with parsley if you like and serve. use the bread as a giant spoon. you are welcome.
sausage soup/stew? casserole?? ingredients: celery, white onion, carrot, sausage/s, cherry tomatoes, tinned tomatoes, chicken broth, parm optional extras: creamy thing of your choice, spinach, orzo recipe: dice the celery, carrot and onion (mirepoix!), and throw it in a big big big pot with some EVOO. now: I get a pack of nice sausages and either mash or chop them depending on how much energy I have, but if you live somewhere with a butcher or whatever you can save your mashing arm and just get ground sausage. throw in the ground, mashed, or chopped sausage and cook for a bit. follow with a tin of chopped tomatoes and chicken broth. I usually put in about a litre. chop the cherry toms and toss them in. follow with a load of grated parm. if you have any parm rinds, throw em in and leave it to bubble away. this doesn't sound like much but it is so good. the longer you leave it the more flavourful it will be! towards the end I like to add in whatever creamy thing is in the fridge (double cream, greek yog, milk), along with lots of chopped spinach and a cup of orzo to really bulk it up. we can happily live on this for DAYS, especially if we have leftover fancy crusty bread from the gochujang pasta. oh and remember to take out the parm rind.
thai chicken curryish ingredients: chicken (thigh/breast), garlic, ginger, yellow peppers, spring onion, cashew nuts, rice, coconut milk, chicken broth optional extras: sriracha, coriander recipe: I love this one cos it is SO quick and SOOOO easy. cut chicken into chunks and brown it in the pot. whip it back out and throw in the chopped garlic and ginger (I have a tube of ginger paste in the fridge cos WHO has the time?) with a big glug of EVOO, then a cup of rice. jasmine works, but I've also used risotto rice. toss in the chopped peppers, spring onion and cashew nuts (if I have the energy I'll chop the nuts, but you can put em in as-is), then add coconut milk (a tin's amount, be that an actual tin or some of the melted stuff that costs 1/4 of the price - thanks Asian supermarket!) and chicken broth. put the browned chicken back in, give it all a stir, cover it, and stick it in the oven for like 25ish mins. here’s the NYT recipe if you need liquid measurements/an actionable recipe that isn’t me riffing. (as always, 12ft.io/ in front of the address to bypass the paywall.) serve it with sriracha squirted all over it (HIGHLY RECOMMEND) and coriander if you like it.
delicious little rice waffle ingredients: leftover jasmine rice, chili crisp, an egg, kewpie mayonnaise, sesame oil, spring onion, A WAFFLE MAKER optional extras: furikake recipe: full disclosure, you need a little waffle maker for this. mix the rice with chili crisp, a little sesame oil, and egg yolk. dollop it into the waffle maker and cook. garnish with kewpie mayo, sliced spring onion and some furikake if you have it, or just toasted sesame seeds if you have those, or neither! delicious little spicy umami snack, my beloved.
tuna melt of dreams ingredients: you know what's in a tuna melt recipe: swap the butter on the outside of the bread for kewpie mayonnaise and thank me later.
ADDENDUM: this goes without saying for me but sadly I know it does not for everybody: SEASON YOUR FOOD WITH SALT. IT WON'T MAKE YOUR FOOD SALTY IT WILL MAKE IT DELICIOUS. COOK YOUR PASTA IN SALT. WHEN IN DOUBT, ADD SOME SALT. THANK YOU.

i suffer from chronic depression and really low energy. i find preparing even the most basic of meals really hard.
do you know of any places in the uk i can buy vegan ready meals which do deliveries please?
also things i can buy in bulk for breakfast, lunch etc like cereal bars where prep isn’t needed
thank you so much
Huel is a good option for very cheap meals, you can buy ready-to-drink ones or powders that you just mix yourself. That can be breakfast and lunch sorted by itself. There are also quite a lot of meal delivery services in the UK who offer vegan food, I found about five with a quick search but I haven't tried any, so I can't make recommendations.
Stocking up on basics like soups, pasta pots and packaged noodles would be good in a pinch. Protein bars would be good to have on hand, Misfits ones are great but Trek do protein flapjacks that are vegan as well. Home and Bargain and Heron do big flapjacks which are surprisingly vegan and are very high in calories, for when you just need to get some fat and calories in - they're about 5 for £2. For more nutritious options, canned foods can also be just thrown in with microwaves rice, things like chickpeas, lentils, black beans, kidney beans etc. You can buy microwavable packets of pre-flavoured grains and such from most supermarkets, they're reasonably healthy and not too expensive. There are also loads of snacking faux meats that you just throw on some bread for a quick lunch. Even just having some bread, hummus and carrot sticks in in can serve as a quick lunch when you really don't have the energy.
The best advice I can give is to pre-prepare meals in bulk, during those periods where you have the energy to do that. This doesn't need to be complex recipe making, you can throw soy chunks/fake chicken, rice, broccoli and soy/teriyaki sauce in a big pan and make enough for a few days in about 10-15 minutes. Meals like chili, pasta, curry, homemade soups and noodle dishes freeze pretty well so you only need to blast them in the microwave.

Today's lunch: a cheesy pasta bake.
Tumblr media
But not just any pasta bake: a very BG3 one.
Spoilers for the Shadowheart origin run's epilogue to follow.
If you save Shadowheart's parents during her origin run, you get a letter from each of them. Emmeline's letter contains a recipe for a pasta bake.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: two screenshots from Baldur's Gate 3, showing a letter from Emmeline Hallowleaf. It reads:
"My dear Shadowheart,
Here's the recipe I mentioned the other day. I wanted to write it down for you just in case it slipped my mind again. I can show you myself once you're home. Enjoy your party, and pass on my best to all your friends.
Love,
Your Mother
X
Feast Day Cheese Bake
For the filling:
One small onion, sliced
Half pound of mushrooms, quartered
Red pepper, diced small
Half pound of greens - spinach, peas, courgette, or whatever is in season in the garden - steamed or boiled
Quarter pound of streaky bacon, chorizo or similar. Fried and diced
Half pound of pasta
For the sauce:
Two tablespoons of butter
Two tablespoons of plain flour
One teaspoon of mild mustard from Cormyr. More if you are daring or congested
Ten fluid ounces of milk
Half pound of mature cheddar cheese, grated
A goodly fistful of breadcrumbs
Method:
Soften the onion in some oil, then add the mushrooms and pepper, and saute over a high flame. Combine with the cooked greens and meat, and set aside. Add pasta to a pot of boiling water.
Melt the butter in a saucepan, then add the flour and whisk over a high flame for one minute. Add the milk, whisking until boiling, then add the grated cheese and remove from flame.
Drain the cooked pasta and add into the cheese sauce, along with the cooked vegetables and meat if used. Combine, and pour into an oven-worthy dish (the square stoneware one with the floral pattern should do nicely). Add the breadcrumbs on top, ad well as some extra cheese if you are feeling wicked (your father often is).
Bake unil the top layer is bubbling and golden, or your loved ones are hungrily loitering about in the kitchen.
PS - if you do not salt the pasta water, you can save it to feed to the plants in your garden."
End ID.]
Today I made it with the following modifications:
I don't want anyone's nonna to slap me so I salted my pasta water.
I also undercooked the noodles - after all, they'd finish cooking in the oven.
I used some vegan sausage I had lying around as the meat. I think the one I used was a bit too dry and bland - a more flavorful and fatty, chorizo-like sausage, would have been a better option.
I used spinach as the greens, and instead of cooking them aside of the sauteed veggies, I wilted the spinach with them. If you do so, watch out! The veggies can become watery, as the spinach releases all its water. I was careful to not dump all that water in the stoneware dish when incorporating the ingredients and it all worked well on my end.
Of course I was feeling wicked and topped the dish with extra cheese :3c
Because most of the cooking has happened outside of the oven, I baked the pasta for 15 minutes at 175 degrees Celsius, plus an extra 5 minutes under the broiler. This is the part I'm less sure about - I'm not a great cook, I just follow recipes. I'd be grateful to hear your input here!
The result: a filling, cheesy, savory, veggie-loaded pasta bake. Next time I'll be more generous with the salt in the filling, though.

MKcember Day 15: Shabbat and/or Kiddush Cup
———
There weren’t a lot of traditions Jake got to participate in. He wasn’t around most times, only Being for those stretches that Marc needed to be kept safe and Steven couldn’t handle. He had some memories—of times he drove for tense family dinners or in the aftermath of a bad Friday—but most of them were distant and loose, the warmth they held something to cherish quietly.
Nowadays he had even less time for active practice, Khonshu made sure of that. He hadn’t been present at synagogue in years, and most holidays he only remembered snacking on leftovers or catching the edges of a prayer while one of the others did the important shit. He slipped out sometimes in moments of overwhelm or… just sometimes, and he enjoyed that when he could, but it was inconsistent. Rocky.
Still, he tried to keep intentionality where he could. Small things, like choosing a Kosher option if it was available (though he was definitely more lax than Steven was), or keeping his hat in place when he was out (even if it wasn’t as traditional as a kippah). It may not have been much, but it mattered to Jake. Little things to keep hold of himself, to act and move as Jake Lockley, not just some moon lackey.
He had one big rule, though.
“Lockley.” Khonshu’s voice burst through the drapes, wind licking angrily throughout the room as he formed in the apartment. “What are you doing?”
Jake glanced back from his place at the counter, slippered feet shifting in place as he turned to face Khonshu. He smirked
“Hey, Big Bird. Here to take a load off?”
Khonshu tilted his head, the movement sharp and irritated. “I am here to collect you. You are not done with your mission. The sorcerer—”
“—Can wait ‘til tonight.” Jake nodded towards the stove. “I’m not missing out on Stevens hamin, you kidding? He hasn’t made this in… a few weeks. I think.”
“…What?”
“Clock slow? Aish, gotta wind that thing, man.” Jake got out a bowl and gestured briefly to Khonshu with the ladle before starting to serve himself. “It’s Shabbat,” he said, smiling.
There was a pause before he heard Khonshu sigh. Jake smiled wider to himself. The bird knew what that meant. No Knighting, no Mooning, no nothing, no matter how much of a fuss he made. Khonshu had tried to make Jake budge a few times in the past, but he’d stayed firm going on damned near a decade now.
This was the one day they really got to rest, got to step out from under Khonshu’s bony thumb and reclaim some of themselves, and Jake would be damned if he let the bird take that too.
“Be at the circle by midnight,” Khonshu said, the cold rush of his presence already receding. “I do not want this heretic to get away again.”
Jake hummed noncommittally, waving slightly over his shoulder as the curtains rustled again. Routine as it had gotten, he still felt a mix of relief and pride every time Khonshu backed off.
He carried a small tune under his breath as he set the lid back on the pot and moved towards the couch. He wasn’t sure if he’d actually be around to help Khonshu later. He was here now, and had been for most of the day, but that was out of the ordinary. Both Marc and Steven felt tired inside, neither active or awake, but that could change at any time, really.
For now, though, Jake had a busy day ahead. He’d spent the morning picking out books from Steven’s shelves, and was planning on working down the stack until he got tired enough to take a well needed nap. Maybe two, if he was feeling luxurious.
Jake felt warm as he settled into the couch, digging into the hamin as soon as he could and relishing the taste of well seasoned vegetables and grain. Steven was some kind of wizard with his vegan shit, he swore.
He cracked open his first novel of the day, thumb balancing between the pages, and let the light in his chest burn a little bit brighter.

My mom: "We tolerate your vegetarian thing every other day of the year, but if you expect to have Thanksgiving dinner with the family, you're going to have some turkey. We don't want to offend the relatives". What would your response be?
First, apologies for the lateness!
Second, well, we don't do Thanksgiving here. That said, in a similar situation ("If you want to share a holiday meal with family, you'll have to eat meat so you don't offend people"), I would opt to sit it out. If it was a matter of being polite, I'd eat a whole lot of side dishes that I can eat, then politely say, "Oh, no, I'm sorry, I think I ate too much already and I don't want to give myself a stomach ache, haha!" or something like that. If I wanted to be more open with my convictions, I'd eat beforehand and say something like, "I won't be joining you at the table, but I'd be happy to spend time with you before/after!"
For an IRL example, I usually don't go to my aunt and uncle's Boxing Day lunch because a) they never have any vegan options, but also b) I do see them all the time anyway, so I'm not really missing out, and I'm not interested in going. That said, if I did, I'd bring my own food, or contribute a dish for everyone that I know I can eat as well.
I did that last year going to my brother's for Christmas, too (I made my loaded potato salad, Mum made all the desserts to be vegan, and my brother made sure at least two other salads were vegan and specifically made me a starter with tofu. He and his wife are very not vegan and love their meat, but they are both extremely considerate hosts!). I'm fortunate enough that even when I'm not catered to (my aunt and uncle), they'd be okay with me bringing my own stuff, and for bigger events, like last Christmas lunch, I could both bring stuff and also was catered for.
Anyway, back to your original dilemma - for situations like this, I would be polite but stick to my convictions. I'd offer the compromise of eating side dishes but avoiding meat, and offer to feign that I've eaten too much already to avoid 'offending the relatives', if that really is your Mum's primary concern. If that's completely unacceptable, then I'd just say, "In that case, I don't see I have any option, and will sit out the meal."
Best of luck for the rest of the holiday season!

I figured while I was here I should give Scotland's own homegrown ramen chain - Maki & Ramen - a go. This is the vegan version of 'hell ramen', named because it's supposed to be extremely spicy, though with an egg added it's obviously now vegetarian. It was actually very tasty! The scary name is a bit funny though, as while this is definitely on the spicy end of things, I don't think it lives up the melodrama. For comparison, the kimchi I ate on the side was spicier! They could have done more with the tofu, which was bland. And I'm aware I'm swimming upstream with this request, but more vegetables please... Still, would eat here again.
One pleasant surprise from this trip has been the quality of the food. I haven't had a bad meal. Sure, I'd prefer more green vegetables and less carbo loading, but it has been delicious. And pretty much everywhere has had a good amount of vegetarian options.

Vegan Kin Food Ideas
S'up! So, we've been seeing a lot of kin food posts, but the focus is always on meat. Then when vegan or vegetarian options are listed it's like salad + fruit and that's it. We've been vegan for some years now so here's a list of things we eat that we think others might enjoy too!
A piece of advice we found helpful is to think about the food item you miss and break it down into what exactly you miss. If you miss eating gems, is it the appearance? The crunch? Gritty texture or dry taste? In that spirit of that, our list will be largely broken up by texture/experience.
Crunch Crunch Snacks
This includes snacks/sides that get your jaws working or have a satisfying "snap" to them.
Roasted chickpeas
Kale chips
Ants on a log (celery, peanut butter and raisins)
Hummus + baby bell peppers/sugar snap peas/carrots
Granola / cereals (a lot of types are vegan, read the ingredients before purchasing)
Banana chips
Nuts + seeds
Popcorn (avoid "buttery" packages, buy plain or kettle corn)
Peanut butter pretzels (crunchy outside, delicious soft inside)
Smartie candies
Keep your cookies/chocolate bars in the fridge or freezer
Also, load cookies up with extra nuts/seeds/choco chips
Soft, but with some crunch
This section is for dishes/sides that are overall easier on the teeth, but with elements that still crunch or snap. If you're looking for recipes that combine different texture elements check these out.
Lentil nachos + nacho cheese sauce
"Crunchwrap" (quesadilla made with refried beans and homemade cheese sauce that we open and place tortilla chips and lettuce inside after grilling)
Tempeh bacon (we like this on a BLT or grilled cheese sandwich)
Crispy tofu sandwiches
Grilled asparagus
Apple slices with nut butter
Pickles
Apple turnovers
Vegan sushi (there's a ton of recipes, check out these two collections to get started X, X)
Falafel (can be used a hundred different ways, sandwiches, wraps, on it's own, etc.)
Roasted chickpeas again, but with a caveat**: You can roast them at 350 F for 30 mins and they'll be cooked enough to pop between your teeth, but soft in the center. We like to either eat them as-is or top our salads with them. (We season with salt/pepper before going into the oven, nothing else) **Must be eaten after baking, they will not keep
For the foragers in the crowd
These dishes focus more on having either multiple different foods in a visible way or a tactile element to how you eat them.
Chia pudding
Smoothie bowls
Overnight oatmeal
Trail mix
Pumpkin bars (We replace the egg with a flax egg and use vegan butter)
Chocolate chip banana monkey bread
Corn on the cob
Grilled veggie kebabs
Cranberry cilantro quinoa salad
Chili
Bush's beans and rice
Salads topped with sliced fruit, nuts, grains and/or beans
Edamame (a favorite, we love pulling out the insides with our teeth, you can get ones without the pods if they bother you)
Plant-based burgers, the kinds with the chunks of veggies (our favorite is dr. praeger's black bean quinoa burgers)
Chewy Foods
This section is for foods that work your jaw, but more in a "needing to chew" way.
Potato gnocchi
Dried fruit (comes in all different flavors, not just raisins)
Swedish fish, red vines, skittles or sour patch kids
Granola bars (a lot of types are vegan, read the ingredients before purchasing)
Thick bread-y pizza (our favorite dough recipe)
Pancakes
Chewy chocolate chip cookies
Peanut butter cookies
Baked oatmeal
Potato skins
Meat Substitutes
The most obvious way to make a dish vegan is to sub in the appropriate mock meat. We've eaten quite a few and we won't sugar-coat it: a lot of them are either going to match the taste, texture, OR look. It's hard for mock meats to copy meat 1:1, some get way closer than others, but if you go into this expecting no difference you will be disappointed.
Our two favorite brands are Impossible and Gardein. We've tried a lot of their products and have yet to eat one we don't like.
These aren't your only options though!
Beans
Falafel (deep-fried balls of ground chickpea)
Tofu
Tempeh (fermented soybeans)
Seitan (made from wheat gluten)
Jack fruit
You might have guessed based on the recipes shared, but we usually opt for beans. We haven't eaten much seitan or jack fruit, but they are options. At our local grocery stores they're sold in the "free from" section and can be brought pre-seasoned and ready to cook with. Jack fruit in particular is a popular replacement for shredded pork.
The trick with a lot of these is to marinate them. Tofu in particular so you can infuse it with flavor. Here's a few recipes we love:
Lentil and sweet potato loaf ("Neat"loaf)
Marinated tofu
Crispy tofu sandwiches
Tempeh bacon
Chili (our mom's recipe that we modified)
Soft / Squish
For things that are soft or squishy and you can slurp up.
Seaweed salad
miso soup
Pico de Gallo Black Bean Soup
"Nice" cream
Chocolate mousse
Oatmeal
Popsicles
Applesauce
Brownie batter hummus
Chia seed jam
Lavender syrup (to flavor other drinks, we use it in coffee)
Lavender lemonade (final product will be a light brown color)
Mashed potatoes + Gravy
Slow cooker apple cider
Tofu scramble
JUST egg
Non-dairy mac and cheese (our favorite brand is the upton's)
Smoothies (if you're looking for a protein powder to include, we recommend Vega)
**Just a reminder to supplement for B12 if you're consuming a vegan diet. There are some foods that are fortified with it; however, a supplement is cheap, easy to find and all-around a more reliable way to ensure you are getting enough.

Thess vs Self-Reflection
I'm not sure if it's really good or really bad that I do this much self-reflection. Thing is, everything interests me and I like to poke at the logic of things in general. I guess starting with myself is as good a way as any to go about it. After all, the mysteries of Me are close to hand.
See, yesterday I had to go out to the Sainsbury's for some ingredients for the upcoming Baking Extravaganza - sour cream for the banana bread, eggs and sugar for ... like, everything ... stuff like that. And I had just literally missed a bus that only comes along every 10-15 minutes because the bus driver did not notice (or just plain ignored) the person with the cane desperately hobbling in the direction of the bus stop as they meandered past. No, seriously, that bus cannot go very fast in this area because it uses a two-lane road that has cars parked on it on both sides, effectively turning it into a one-lane road and everyone has to kind of do some funky swervy Red Rover shit to get anywhere if someone's driving in the opposite direction. So they had time to see me if they were checking their mirrors but just ... nope. Ambled on past.
So since there wasn't really time to go back home and sit for awhile, and also because I wasn't going to go up the hill from the bus stop to my house more times than I had to, I popped to the corner shop briefly for a chocolate bar and then still had a five-minute wait for the bus, more or less. And I'm standing there with my reusable shopping bag and my chocolate bar and my aches and pains from two trips to the communal skips (dumpsters, whatever) with loads of trash and recycling (because I can't take too much at one time, what with the cane and all), on top of the aches and pains of just existing with fibromyalgia ... and I sat there and wondered, "Why the fuck do I do this to myself? Why can't I just buy snacks like normal people? Spend fewer spoons, y'know?"
It was as good a way as any to kill time waiting for the bus, thinking about that.
There are a few answers, I guess. A goodly part of it is spite, I think, and it comes in two parts, both aimed at "My body has betrayed me but I am not giving it the satisfaction of winning". Which is honestly stupid if you think about it too long, but it also makes sense in a way. Like, I developed a gluten intolerance and suddenly there was all this stuff I simply cannot eat unless I want to be really sick, and capitalism is such that most of the gluten-free options on offer are also vegan, and those two things don't go well together just because of the nature of gluten-free flour. So I could give up all semblance of having a baked treat now and then ... or I could say "Fuck you; if capitalism and my own body won't let me have tasty treats, I'll make them myself". That's the easy part.
The harder part of that is ... well, I'm going to hurt anyway. That's my life now. I could sit doing nothing and I would still hurt. Maybe not quite as much, but it depends on the day and the weather and all manner of other shit. And obviously I'm not going to court pain too much, or for things I can more or less avoid, or things that don't matter so much. I won't court pain for video games (or ... well, not many video games). I won't court pain for my job unless I really have to, and even then there are limits (specifically "DO NOT MAKE ME COMMUTE AN HOUR AND A HALF EACH WAY, ESPECIALLY IF I'M DOING ILL-ADVISED OVERTIME BECAUSE OF 'UNEXPECTED ABSENCES' AND UNDERSTAFFING").
...I won't court pain unless it's worth it, I think is what I'm trying to say. MCM Comic Con 2023? That was worth it. It was excruciating, but it was worth it. So the question becomes, is treating myself well worth the pain? Is making sure that I have food that I enjoy, the occasional treat, and the sheer joy I get out of creating something nice, worth it? The answer is yes. The answer has to be yes. Otherwise, what's the point?
I've been at a "what's the point?" stage before. I have more actual reason for one now. If I can have random spasms and unbelievable fatigue and occasional brain-fog moments and unreasonable bowel upset and constant pain, I can see how easy it would be to start thinking, "What's the point if the rest of my entire life is this? And probably getting worse as time goes on because the body deteriorates anyway..." So I have to make it worth it. I have to do whatever I can to keep from absolutely despairing about what I can't do anymore. I have to do things that I can be proud of, and that I can turn to and say, "I am worth the effort and the pain involved in doing this for myself".
Do I sometimes still despair that the rest of my life is going to be spent in pain? Yes. I can't pretend I don't. I'm still grieving a halfway normal life, and I probably always will be. But ... well, fuck fibromyalgia; I can still make banana bread. And I deserve banana bread. As long as I can think that way most of the time, I'll be okay.

Today is all about food so I made a few picrews about my headcanons for the mccormick siblings and the meals they like. Also their diets are tied to their jobs so career headcanons too
Karen
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Homegirl loves her sweets. With savory food she's more of a picky eater, so when she gets burgers it's just meat and bread and cheese for her. Not as big of an appetite as her brothers. She mainly supported herself as a freelance artist, so what went into her body was never too important.
Kenny
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's honestly kinda sick of all the sugary meals Carol makes at home and by the time he moves out he'd rather stick his head in the oven than eat cold cereal for dinner again. Before his career as a humanitarian took off he did a lot of manual labor and needed to pack in some protein in order to do his job without getting seriously injured. Lover of potatoes in any form and he'd eat them for breakfast lunch and dinner if he could. (For a long time I headcanoned that he has a major sweet tooth because of the meals he grew up with, but in canon whenever he has the option to choose his own food he mostly gets savory stuff, so I think the poptarts and bread sandwiches are something he only eats because he has to).
Kevin
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Appreciates his carbs and starches. Leans more towards the sweet side. If his food isn't loaded with sugar or a beautiful golden color then he doesn't want it. The only vegetables he'll eat are the onion rings that come with his burger dripping with extra cheese. As an adult his jobs were mostly stuff like collecting garbage or working the dayshift at a laundromat; stuff that allowed him to be independent and didn't require a degree, but it wasn't super crucial for him to maintain a ton of muscle.

Do you have any tips on being vegan while traveling in another country? I'm visiting Portugal and Spain this summer, have never been out of the u.s. and basically only know English. Have done a bit of research on typically plant based common menu options, found many vegan/vegan friendly restaurants in the bigger cities we're visiting, and planning to use translation app when buying groceries, but anything I'm missing? (Or any special vegan treats i could find in Europe and not the u.s., for that matter?)
I’ve found the HappyCow app to be invaluable when travelling, never been to a US or European city that doesn’t have plenty of options listed. Even if you’re somewhere a bit more rural, you can always opt for renting an apartment you can cook in, which tends to be cheaper than a hotel anyway.
As for generally navigating veganism there, do learn some key phrases, how to reserve a table, how to order, learn the translations of milk, cheese, meat etc. and all your pleasantries. In the big cities people tend to respond to you in English anyway when they hear your accent but they appreciate the effort and can overcome any communication barriers.
As for treats, find a supermarket or a health market (there are a few European versions of these) and just try what they’ve got - they often tell you they’re vegan on the packaging in English. HappyCow will show you local restaurants, and many will offer veganised versions of local food which you should definitely try. Search by vegetarian and vegan friendly as opposed to exclusively vegan, then you’ll get a larger range. There are loads of options in Lisbon and Madrid but can’t speak for anywhere else.
The difficulty you may encounter that you may expect less is tea and coffee rather than food. You can always go to a chain of course but I’m still always surprised that plant milks aren’t as widely available in some European cities as they are in the UK and US, so know how to ask for them or just order it black if you don’t mind it that way. You can get plant milk in plenty of cafes but you can’t just expect it to be a available everywhere like you can here in the UK and many parts of the US.
I can’t emphasise enough how worthwhile it is to spend some time studying the languages though, you obviously can’t learn it in a short space but it’s definitely polite and so worthwhile to get a few basics down. Just don’t arrive knowing no Spanish or Portuguese as it is generally considered quite rude and people may be less likely to help you out with your ordering. Have a good time!
