At the tender age of forty-[coughcough], I still don't feel like a real adult. I doubt I ever will. This being said, my students invited me to an off-campus event today where they had some works being performed, and they were thrilled that I and my colleague attended. It's events like this that make you realize you actually are the adult in the room and the kids want you there as their support. It's great and I would run through brick walls for my students, but it's also still so weird in so many ways.

Sometimes I randomly wonder what some actors think when they find fanfiction featuring their character. Not in the ‘oh nawr it’s PORWN!!?!’ Kind of way, but more in the: ‘huh, so that’s what people got from my acting?’ Or ‘Oh, that’s a different place that story line could have gone.’ Or ‘wait why didn’t we explore this in the show?’ Or ‘He Wouldn’t Fucking Say That.’

okay okay okay obviously this zerxus characterization (and a little bit of the story) doesn't FULLY line up with exu calamity but like. you can very much extrapolate and see how he could have gotten to this point!! he already sort of blamed laerryn for what happened to evandrin and to the city, and you can imagine that festering for a thousand years in a place like the hells.

and his line about how "there's no difference between the gods above and the ones below" perfectly mirrors his statements in the campaign- at one point he says something about how "once you bow to one you bow to them all," so that's always been something he's thought

plus, his fortress being called the brass skull- clearly some of his connection with his old friends is still there, even if he's trying to pretend it's not

i think it's a fun interpretation!!! and of course seeing the aspects of calamity depicted in stained glass like that (especially the ring of brass, evandrin, and elias) was. so so so good. what an excellent artistic choice. i cried

Ok silly Malevolent thinking time -- something that's been floating around my head as someone who's studied a lot of 20th century music history and theory is that there's nooo way Arthur would have become a professional composer in the 1920s. If Faroe's Song is comparable to the rest of Arthur's compositions, his tonal language was just too darn simple for the trends of music at the time. On one hand, swing bands, ragtime, and blues were all the rage in the 20's/30's (George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, Tommy Dorsey, etc.). That's what sold at the time, and it influenced a lot of classical music at the time too -- you could even hear jazz and ragtime inspiration in European music written at the time (e.g. Debussy's Gollywog's Cakewalk from his Children's Corner Suite!). Arthur's music is definitely Not That, though.

On the other hand, you had the rise of the modernist and expressionist movements post WWI, which brought about some crazy composers who did wacky things with harmony and tonality just because they could (think Charles Ives, Amy Beach, Arnold Schoenberg, Maurice Ravel, etc.) and Arthur's music is also definitely Not That either.

Arthur's style reminds me more of contemporary classical music (think Arvo Part/Hans Zimmer esque) that we saw cropping up in the 1970s and later. It's very reminiscent of late 20th century/early 21st century modern film composition still very much in existence nowadays -- they're meant to be simple as to not take attention away from the main piece of media you're watching. Which, from a production perspective, makes a lot of sense for Malevolent, because the music is often used as scoring for whatever's happening in the show! So maybe this is all intentional and this whole post is for nothing! But I just thought it was something worth sharing because it has been on my MIND anytime Arthur or another character brings up his compositions

When she's not running around as Ninja or Summoner , Arsay's next choice is the lance. Being bestowed a source of draconic power by Midgardsormr moments before his slumber, and knowing how to channel the powers of Bahamut with dreadwyrm trance, Arsay's power as a Dragoon rivals that of even the former Azure Dragoon. With that said, she'd much rather use her polearm to hunt monsters.

i'm only kinda sorry but if i'm reading fanfic and the writer puts faith in a dress without a Very Good Reason (ex. the mayor made her wear it, she's trying to impress buffy, she's a bridesmaid in somebody's wedding) i am taken out of it so quickly. that tiny detail bugs me so much what are you even doing?? faith hates dresses!!!! free her!!!!!

giving myself a solid B+ grade overall for this month's apprentice tattooing event...... i did more last-minute appointments this time so instead of my scheduled 15, i ended up doing about 18 tattoos in total over three afternoons, and i only started getting clumsy and really mean to myself during the last three appointments on the last day. so that's pretty good i think????
