Sonic:

Sonic is quick to notice that reading isn't your strong suit. It doesn’t bother him at first. You stumble over words, sometimes avoiding tasks that involve reading altogether, and it sparks his protective instincts.

At first, he helps you in small ways, reading menus, helping you write notes, and guiding you through anything that requires comprehension.

Slowly, Sonic realizes how much power he holds in this situation. You trust him greatly, relying on him to guide you through tasks and information. But he would never abuse that trust and use it for his advantage... Right?

When you receive a letter in the mail, Sonic is the first to find it. Opening it up and skimming through it. Upon realizing its a love letter, he immediately is not having it.

When you ask about the letter, Sonic laughs it off, holding it up like it’s nothing.

"Oh, this? It’s just junk mail. Something about a... uh, local discount or something. Don’t worry about it, I'll just toss it for you."

From that point on he is always trying to help you out, reading things for you, to be more helpful. Emails, messages, etc. You're slowly starting to rely on him more and more.

If and when you start talking about wanting to improve your reading, Sonic subtly discourages it.

"Hey, why bother? You’ve got me for that stuff. Besides, we’ve got more fun things to do than stare at boring books, right?"

If you push the issue, he’ll sabotage your efforts. He might hide the materials you need to practice or distract you with sudden outings.

"Come on, let’s take a run! Reading can wait."

If someone else tries to get close to you, he’ll intercept their messages and replace them with his own fabrications. He’s so casual about it too, you might never even question it.

He genuinely believes that keeping you in the dark is the best way to keep you safe, and to keep you his.

Tails:

Tails immediately notices how you cabt read. He pities it, and immediately goes out of his way to start heloing you out by reading things for you, planning on teaching yiu to read after a while.

At first, his help seems innocent. He patiently explains things, reads signs aloud, and even offers to help you with learning to read better himself. You find his kindness endearing, and at this point he is genuinely trying to help you.

When the love letter arrives, Tails spots it before you do. His sharp eyes catch the handwriting, and his heart sinks as he realizes someone is trying to steal your attention.

Tails doesn’t just hide the letter he carefully reads it, analyzing the handwriting and tone to learn more about this potential suitor. Then, he burns the letter in his workshop, making sure no trace of it remains.

"Oh, you got something in the mail? It was just one of those generic ads. Nothing important." His voice is calm, his face perfectly composed.

Tails begins to take over more aspects of your life, presenting it as acts of kindness. He offers to organize your schedule, manage your bills, and even write your grocery lists.

If you ever feel embarrassed about your struggles, Tails is quick to reassure you.

"Hey, it’s okay. You don’t have to do everything on your own. That’s why you have me."

He becomes your shadow, always there to help, because thats what friends do, no?

After sone time of becoming more attached tobyiu, he stops offering to help with your reading. Infact, like Sonic, Tails actually starts to discourages your attempts to improve your reading skills.

"Learning takes time, and you’re already so busy. Dont worry, I'll just handle it for now, okay?"

He goes a step further by subtly undermining your confidence. If you misread something, he’ll correct you in a way that feels condescending.

"Oh, that’s not what it says, like at all... Here, let me fix it for you."

Tails uses his engineering skills to keep tabs on you. He installs hidden cameras and microphones in your home, ensuring he knows exactly who you’re talking to and what you’re doing.

If someone else tries to connect with you, Tails will intercept their messages, deleting or altering them before they reach you.

"Looks like your friend canceled on you again. Don’t worry, I’ll keep you company."

he does suffer from a lot of chronic pain & often refuses meds because a weapon shouldn't be taking resources away from the mortals . anacanoa usually forces him to take meds anyway because she cant stand to see him suffering . even during less pain days , he can get easily confused as his mind is a little rattled between all the timelines going on in his head . so he has days where he has to take things slow , which can frustrate him as he's used to being the one to do difficult tasks to take care of everyone .

OHHH I MEANT TO REPLY TO THIS A LOT SOONER FRIEND BUT GOSH. also like i think what you said is soooo true, and now with discovering my love for reading again is such a healing experience because finally its something i can enjoy freely on my own without judgment or academic need.

I more so have a fondness of audiobooks because I think it just fits my style of comprehension. Sometimes its hard for me to focus at times, especially when theirs noise. I enjoy reading but I just havent got the time anymore to just sit for hours on end. My dad called it a skill, like some kind of muscle that you can train to do again which seems... odd... I think its probably something more like adhd. Anyway, its quite easier to consume books that way because I'm able to do things in the background that help me focus better. (I do not know why, but when I am physically doing something it helps my brain comprehend things easier. Its almost like it gives more stimulation to things.). So when I'm working, I'm listening to a book! It just works for me! Ideally I want to get back into physical books but I just have so many hobbies and stuff I want to do so its hard for me to figure out my footing so I'm trying to make it super easy to do the things I love that I can't possibly not do them.

(I call it outsmarting myself in a way. Sometimes I get exhausted over the thought of doing a big task so I procrastinate it even if its "fun" so I'm making it so ridiculously easy to read that I can't NOT read.)

ALSO- for me personally ive found that theyre really super immersive, and you just feel IN the story more. Soothing too. I like audiobooks.

Its about this girl who moves to new york named August. shes bi, but she moves in with these three people. Niko, Wes, and Myla. She's there for college because she transferred. There's some mystery going on with her mother at the start because her mother is super engrossed in trying to track down her long lost brother (August's uncle). But before August left, she told her mother that she was DONE helping her find clues on him.

Basically on her first day of class she skins her knee and dumps coffee all over herself and somehooooow meets this woman on the subway. Her name is Jane!! And shes super pretty and August is immediately crushing so hard on her!!!!!!! Jane gives her this scarf to help and their exchanges continue after that. August tries to ask Jane out but its later revealed that shes trapped on the subway (gasp!!! oh no!!).

Jane's been trapped on the subway for almost 45 years and she doesn't really remember her life at all or even how she got there but August ends up helping her figure out what all happened.

Oh I'm not doing this enough justice at all because man I just... ughhh.

TURNS OUT- later on in the story she figures out Jane was a nickname she was given back in the 70s'. Her actual name's Biyu Su and she had ran away from her home at 18 out of feeling shame for being gay and (i forget what else??) But its literally like shes trapped on the subway between space and time. Shes not a ghost, but she's also not able to leave. She's connected to the subway itself. IM BEYOND SORRY BECAUSE ITS BEEN A WEEK BUT LIKE. i love august and her so much. I cant. I actually cant 😭. THEY MEAN SO MUCH TO ME.

im not even saying all of what happens, either. I just adore the characters and how everyone interacts with one another. I wanted to cry when I finished it. And now!! I own it!! Due to the fact there are many designs and that they have interchangeable parts, can a mech be outfitted with weapons? I know they have claws and a strong jaw (presumably) but can you strap a plasma rifle onto one? What about utilities like a lighter? Does that mech need training and a license for dangerous upgrades?

assuming the answer to 1 is yes, has there been any major wars or conflict?

Once again about interchangeable parts and different mech designs, are certain mechs designs suited for specific tasks? Can an operator choose the design before becoming a mech? How much freedom do they have?

More questions! 1) Only some parts are interchangeable - and outfitting can mean multiple things. Obviously nothing prevents a mech from holding a weapon with their hands, or physically strapping them onto limbs and holding triggers - I assume this isn't what you mean. When an operator is integrated, their neural I/O is mapped to their new Mech body, propagating nerve signals through the machine muscle that makes up most of a mech's body mass. It's possible to re-map neural bandwidth on demand, to add additional components, limbs, sensors, proxy capabilities or, as you mentioned, weapons. Initially, the mech may have to give up part of their sensory I/O or choose to sacrifice functionality to make room for additional parts, but over time, after initial operator integration, the integration systems themselves slowly seek deeper into the operator's organics, splitting even the finest of signals into smaller strands - as such, operators will often experience their base capacity for neural I/O expanding very gradually - and experienced mechs may not need to give up anything to fit an upgrade. Adding parts requires an Integration Module / INTEG. These are semi-uncommon upgrades that interface with a mech's nervous system by weaving directly into their machine muscle, and acting as an extension for compatible external systems to latch onto.

Trying to enforce which tech a mech decides to incorporate can be a complex affair, and in setting not many factions would consider it a worthwhile endeavor.

If you outwardly sport dangerous upgrades, chances are you won't be welcomed into civilized settlements.

2) The entire setting is post apocalyptic, with mechs being ancient techology, remaining after the fall of the empires of old, now studied and replicated - whichever conflict lead to the fall of previous civilizations, it was extremely comprehensive in its destruction.

Current civilization has existed for long enough to independently develop space travel, but with new powers emerging, new faction conflicts are brewing. I may get into these later, but I've identified at least a handful distinct groups at risk of entering lasting conflict with one another.

3) Certain mechs are better suited for certain tasks by design, and the frame of a mech largely defines its final shape and capabilities (prior to upgrades).

Mechs are mostly Found Technology and the understanding thereof is still being built.

There are generally two ways of becoming an operator - being integrated inside a mech equipped with operator conversion systems, and being integrated within a standalone conversion pod. There are reasons to integrate even if you don't have a mech, which I'll get into later (you could become a Virtual Dweller for instance).

It should be noted that an Operator is what the user becomes during integration. Many operators aren't even aware that they're separable from their Mech Body - if they were converted inside a mech equipped with conversion systems, they'd simply wake up as the mech upon completion.

If you find one and want to perform modifications on it prior to integration, you'd have to find a way haul it back to a workshop with all the necessary spare parts to make significant alterations, and hope it doesn't get stolen or damaged along the way. For this reason, it is often a take it or leave it kinda' deal.

Geralt is meditating on the living room floor, cross-legged and with his eyes tightly shut. While she doesn’t quite get the concept of meditation in general, finds it too frustrating and with too little practical result, she doesn’t dare bother him. It’s what he does and she’s plenty occupied reading anyway.

And so their shared flat is completely silent, peacefully so. Or, at least, it is until Jaskier, who is without a doubt the nosiest housemate in existence, barges inside.

“I’m home,” he loudly sing-songs all the way from the front door. It’s an unnecessary announcement and so both Yennefer and Geralt react appropriately - she with a roll of her eyes while he grunts under his breath. Neither of them pauses their respective tasks, though, far too used to Jaskier’s rambunctiousness to let it get to them.

Jaskier, either oblivious or deliberately ignoring their annoyance, saunters into the living room with a bright grin on his face.

“Witch,” he greets Yennefer with a mock little bow and then he moves onto Geralt. And this - this is where things start to get interesting, enough so that Yennefer lowers her book to watch the scene unfold.

Jaskier steps close to Geralt, close enough that Geralt clearly picks up on his presence and grumbles something yet again. Jaskier, entirely undeterred, coos at him in response and then he... leans in. He leans in and kisses Geralt, straight on the lips.

Yennefer is sure that, last she checked, the two of them have still been dancing around each other without any definitive resolutions as to the state of their relationship. She is also fairly sure that they have never kissed.

(She would know if they did - Jaskier would certainly never shut up about it.)

And yet, Jaskier had just kissed him and Geralt, for his part, hadn’t even flinched. In fact... he’d leaned into it. Curious, indeed.

Hiii, I've said this before and I'll say this again out of all of the NCT universes Wayv gets the absolute best styling,concepts, and songs. Nothing against dream or 127 I love them all equally but Wayv has had way less misses with title tracks then 127. I just cant accept 2baddies. I can't. It has not grown on me.

But seriously they look amazing it's still giving Vampire princes and I love it. And the song like it sounds like a Wayv song but kind of matured and refined in a way. Yangyang's voice surprised me but luckily we found out he has the range and I love when he switches it back to his natural voice. And Hendery and Winwin normally have deep voices but like it sounded so much deeper I could feel it in the depths of my uterus. And only Felix's rap in victory song has ever done that. Like it just was so good then Xiaojun and Ten off setting the depth with their higher voices and Xiaojun's high notes will always hit the spot every single time and Kun's mid tempo voice kind of melds it all together. Like they finally returned to us after years they've done it.

No I feel you with Stray Kids pulling me by my ankles I also felt myself slipping from NCT but Wayv really just came in and was like not on our watch. And I can't wait to see them promote fully after two years. They deserve all of our love and support. cannot stop thinking about the bizarre social world of monsters inc 

like, first movie, they really have no actual understanding of humans as People, they’re considered like dangerous animals that emit such powerful screams they can be used as energy and will absolutely kill you if they even touch you

so scarers are incredibly brave and heroic for facing that threat to get the essential power their society needs

but now they’ve realized laugh power is even stronger and more ethical, and theres a big difference in how the monsters interact with children now. like imagine if skunk... pheromones? gas? whatever it is that skunks produce. imagine if that was an essential energy source. learning how to scare them to get them to produce it wouldn’t be that complicated. but what if they only did that when they’re amused. what is funny to a skunk? how do you tell a joke to a skunk and have it Understand the humor. especially if generations of skunks have learned to be afraid of you 

so even if they never thought of humans as People before, they must be realizing it now, right? these are creatures with comprehension of language and humor. so wouldn’t all the former scarers now be coping with the realization that they are almost definitely the cause of deep childhood trauma for probably several generations of humans 

not to mention the Monster In The Closet is a well known childhood fear, monster=scary is a basic fact of human culture, so now the incoming “jokesters” have the insurmountable task of “this being has lived its whole life learning that monsters are scary and bad and will hide in your closet and Get You. now i need to come through the closet and make them laugh somehow” 

its not just “they gotta be real good at comedy” they have to somehow navigate a massive cultural shift in a species that has been writing stories about how scary they are since, like, humans began telling stories. and there can be no widescale communication because they still cant interact with adult humans for some reason. how are the adults going to respond to a sudden surge of children across the globe now saying “its okay, monsters are funny and nice actually” especially for the parents who have vague memory they’ve convinced themselves were nightmares of That Thing That Was In My Closet when they were children

Going FOSS: An Intro to Open-Source software for studyblr (and also some privacy related bits)

Intro & attempt at TLDR

Hey everyone! Today I’d like to tell y’all something about Open Source Software, and also Why this should matter to you! This’ll probably be the first post of a series I intend to do, because I believe the Studyblr community, even the non-nerd folks, could really benefit from switching some things out in their digital environment. Since this is a long post, I attempted to summarise it below, please do read on if you have the spoons tho!

TLDR?

FOSS stands for “Free and Open Source Software” the “free” part doesn’t necessarily mean it’s free as in free pizza, but mostly means free as in freedom.

There’s a humongous amount of variants on this concept, but the core of FOSS specifically is the four freedoms:

1. To run the program however you want and for whatever you want

2. To study how the program works and to change it in whatever way you want

3. To be able to share it with whomever you feel like

4. To be able to share your modified version with whomever you want

There’s a whole host of software licenses built around these concepts, you can check those out at the Open Source Initiative website, or at Choose A License. Both have a good summary of what they all stand for.

Open Source software is used for a lot of products, nearly every single webserver is an Apache Linux server, Google chrome is built on top of their open source chromium (google is still the devil, but y’know, it’s an example), and even deep deep down, Apple computers run on top of a Linux Kernel. Many more can be listed, but I won’t do that otherwise this isn’t a TLDR anymore.

Now, Why is this important for you? The Open Source Initiative summed it up real nicely already, but heres a short paraphrase:

Control & Security. If software is open source then you can check if it really works the way it does, and to make sure it’s not spying on you. Even if you don’t have the skills for it, someone else who does will be able to check. Also if you don’t like how something works in a program, then you’ll be able to change it or find someone else’s changed version that you like more.

Training. People who want to learn programming can use the code to see what makes programs tick, as well as use it as a guide for their own projects.

Stability. Because everything’s out in the open, that means someone else can take up maintaining a project or make a successor of it, in case the original developers suddenly quit working on it. This is especially important when it’s software that’s absolutely critical for certain tasks.

Community. It’s not just one program. It’s a lot of people working together to make, test, use, and promote a project they really love. Lots of projects end up with a dedicated fanbase that helps support the developers in continuing to work on the software.

I’d like to add one more tho: Privacy, which ties in a lot with the security part. Nowadays with protests going on and everything being online due to the pandemic, folks have been and will be confronted much more with the impact of privacy, and lack thereof. Open Source software means that if any company or group tries to spy on you, then you and anyone who feels like checking, will be able to know and take action on it. Terminology: Let’s get that out of the way first

Open Source: The source code that a program is made up of is freely accessible, anyone can look at it and check whether it works well enough or to make sure it doesn’t spy on you.

FOSS: Free and Open Source Software. This doesn’t mean that you don’t need to pay for it, it’s free as in freedom and free speech, not free pizza.

There are four freedoms associated with FOSS:

The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose (freedom 0).

The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it does your computing as you wish (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help others (freedom 2).

The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others (freedom 3).

By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to benefit from your changes. Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

FLOSS: Free and Libre Open Source Software. This time it is “free” as in free pizza. The “libre” is french for “free” as in freedom.

GRATIS: Sometimes people use this word to mean “free” as in free pizza. Usually alongside “FOSS”

Licenses : A license is something that tells others what they can or cannot do with your code. Licenses also apply to art and literature, those are copyright licenses. There are many different software licenses and I’m not going to be able to list them all.

The biggest players however are:

Apache License 2.0

The 3-Clause BSD License

GNU General Public License (also known as GPL)

MIT License

Mozilla Public License 2.0

There’s even more and you can find a list of them Here on the Open Source Initiative site There’s so many licenses that there’s even a Choose A License site, where you can pick a license depending on what you want it to achieve

Who and/or what even uses open source software?

You don’t need to be some nerd to benefit from Open Source software, in fact, you’re using open source software right now! The biggest example is the whole entire internet. Websites are stored on servers, and nearly every single webserver is a Linux server. The second biggest browser Firefox is open source, and even google chrome is built on top of “chromium” an open source base. If you dont use an iPhone, then you’re probably on an Android phone. Guess what? Android is part of the Android Open Source Project, which is then built upon a GNU/Linux base. All Open Source. Chromebooks? Built on top of a Linux kernel (like a non-patented engine you could put into any motor vehicle you’d like). Heck, even Apple computers are, at their core, built on top of a Linux kernel.

Neat apps you may wanna check out!

I’ve made a little list of apps that might be especially useful for studyblr folks, but depending on how well this post does I’ll probably make some more posts for specific apps.

TiddlyWiki, has a bajillion different ways to organise your thoughts, and also a lot of variant builds out there. Check out their table of contents if you feel lost! There’s versions available for most big browsers, as well as windows, linux, mac, android, and iOS.

AnyType, is an app that looks and almost exactly like notion, but is much more decentralised. They’re currently still in development but if you want to support them, sign up for early access and give them some feedback so they know what works and doesn’t! They’re still in closed alpha, but are intending to give beta access to about 100 folks at a time throughout 2021, so please sign up if this looks interesting to you!

Trilium Notes, is slightly more like a “notebook”, however you can arrange your notes in nearly infinitely deep folders. You can use things like Relation Maps & Link Maps to visualise your notes and how they go together. There’s even more they do and I just cant list it all, so go check out their stuff for a more comprehensive overview! Works on windows, linux, and (unsupported) mac

LibreOffice and ONLYOFFICE are two office suites that function just as well as micro$oft office, often Even Better in my experience. I’ve used LibreOffice for years now and honestly? never going back. OnlyOffice is technically free (as in pizza), but it’s a slight hassle to get everything set up, cause you need to set it up on a server. They have a paid and hosted version available with educational discounts, but honestly i’d go with LibreOffice.

OnePile, is an app I haven’t used myself since it only runs on Apple stuff. But I’ve heard a lot of good things about it so that’s why it’s in here. It looks like it works similar to most general “note taking notebook” apps. Looks really pretty too honestly.

EtherPad, is similar to ONLYOFFICE, however this one’s a lot more focused on specifically text documents. Works with real-time collaboration which is really neat.

Anything that FramaSoft has going on. They’re a non-profit organisation, dedicated to promoting digital freedom. A lot of open source cloud related things are not really useful to people who don’t have the time and/or money to set up a whole-ass server. That’s where FramaSoft comes in, they do it for you. Just about everything they offer (here’s a full overview) are free (as in free pizza). They also have a separate site to help you get started!

It’s not free to run it all on their side, so if you find yourself interested in using their services please try to support them any way you monetarily can! (they even have a “minetest” server (not minecraft, deeeefinitely not minecraft))

Joplin!! Which is also what I used to write this post so I wouldn’t have to use The Tumble’s post writing thing. It’s good for taking notes, has a bunch of neat plug-ins, and can also sync with a variety of cloud services!

Nextcloud For if you want to go just that little bit further on the open source and the privacy. Nextcloud has honestly way too many features for me to list, but the important parts are that it’s a nigh perfect replacement for office365, and probably even GSuite. The one caveat is that you either gotta host it yourself, or get someone else to host it for you. Framasoft (mentioned above), has a nextcloud instance. It works on just about every single platform, and can integrate with an absurd amount of services. Here’s a list of providers that work with nextcloud, and what different apps they have installed on their server.

I personally use Disroot, because they’re a local (as in, my country) non-profit that offer about 2gb of free storage, and then for about 15 cents per GB per month you can get more storage if you want. They also have an email service which is hella neat. Their one main rule is Do Not Use For Business Purposes, because they’re here to help the individual folks, not companies.
