against my better judgement I am going to let people vote on a book for me to read
please don't clown. refer to this post for a working definition of clownery. I won't block you if you try to recommend a completely different book but I will publicly shame you and at the end of the day isn't that actually way worse?
anyway here's the deal: I'm taking the four novels that have been gathering figurative dust on my TBR the longest and providing a brief description/blurb of each of them here. then you're gonna click that google link and vote once, for one of them. can we all handle that?
cool. now, MEET YOUR CANDIDATES:
Empress of Forever (Max Gladstone, 2019):
A wildly successful innovator to rival Steve Jobs or Elon Musk, Vivian Liao is prone to radical thinking, quick decision-making, and reckless action. On the eve of her greatest achievement, she tries to outrun people who are trying to steal her success. In the chilly darkness of a Boston server farm, Viv sets her ultimate plan into motion. A terrifying instant later, Vivian Liao is catapulted through space and time to a far future where she confronts a destiny stranger and more deadly than she could ever imagine. The end of time is ruled by an ancient, powerful Empress who blesses or blasts entire planets with a single thought. Rebellion is literally impossible to consider--until Vivian Liao arrives. Trapped between the Pride—a ravening horde of sentient machines—and a fanatical sect of warrior monks who call themselves the Mirrorfaith, Viv must rally a strange group of allies to confront the Empress and find a way back to the world and life she left behind.
Station Eleven (Emily St. John Mandel, 2015)
One snowy night a famous Hollywood actor slumps over and dies onstage during a production of King Lear. Hours later, the world as we know it begins to dissolve. Moving back and forth in time—from the actor's early days as a film star to fifteen years in the future, when a theater troupe known as The Travelling Symphony roams the wasteland of what remains—this suspenseful, elegiac, spellbinding novel charts the strange twists of fate that connect five people: the actor, the man who tried to save him, the actor's first wife, his oldest friend, and a young actress with the Traveling Symphony, caught in the crosshairs of a dangerous self-proclaimed prophet. Sometimes terrifying, sometimes tender, Station Eleven tells a story about the relationships that sustain us, the ephemeral nature of fame, and the beauty of the world as we know it
Docile (K.M. Szpara, 2020)
To be a Docile is to be kept, body and soul, for the uses of the owner of your contract. To be a Docile is to forget, to disappear, to hide inside your body from the horrors of your service. To be a Docile is to sell yourself to pay your parents' debts and buy your children's future. Elisha Wilder’s family has been ruined by debt, handed down to them from previous generations. His mother never recovered from the Dociline she took during her term as a Docile, so when Elisha decides to try and erase the family’s debt himself, he swears he will never take the drug that took his mother from him. Too bad his contract has been purchased by Alexander Bishop III, whose ultra-rich family is the brains (and money) behind Dociline and the entire Office of Debt Resolution. When Elisha refuses Dociline, Alex refuses to believe that his family’s crowning achievement could have any negative side effects—and is determined to turn Elisha into the perfect Docile without it.
Lovecraft Country (Matt Ruff, 2016)
Chicago, 1954. When his father goes missing, twenty-two-year-old Army veteran Atticus Turner embarks on a road trip to New England to find him, accompanied by his uncle George—publisher of The Safe Negro Travel Guide—and his childhood friend Letitia. On their journey to the manor of Samuel Braithwhite—heir to the estate that owned one of Atticus’s ancestors—they encounter both the mundane terrors of white America and malevolent spirits that seem straight out of the weird tales George devours.
Atticus discovers his father in chains, held prisoner by a secret cabal, the Order of the Ancient Dawn—led by Braithwhite and his son Caleb—which has gathered to perform a ritual that shockingly centers on Atticus. And his one hope of salvation may be the seed of his—and the whole Turner clan’s—destruction.
alrighty giddy up and go vote. if you hop into my replies/inbox to explain to me why any of these are Very Bad And You Shouldn't Read Them, Actually, then congrats - that one automatically wins by default.

@autismserenity said: Your tags are the most American thing I’ve ever read, we are truly so screwed here
May I interest you in a more complete, and more excruciating, explanation of what I spent the last 18 months doing?
It is, I need to emphasize, fucking nasty. Don’t feel obligated, especiallly if you’ve already had A Day(tm).
There’s a lot of disease, a lot of worker abuse including sexual and racial abuse, a fine portion of letting people die for not being white enough for real medical care, all leading to homelessness.
For NDA reasons, because my former employer was just as vile as any tech company has ever been, I cannot be super specific about who I worked for. However, I can say that we handled the records and patient contact for all COVID testing for several states, as well as 2 of the 5 largest metros in the US, and several dozen smaller ones ranging from the approximate population of San Francisco, down to little towns, as well as the testing for several public school systems and at least two government agencies that I am not at liberty to disclose.
I tell you this for a sense of scale. When I say shit like, “my boss was more than happy to let thousands or hundreds of thousands die” I am not exagerrating for effect. We handled hundreds of thousands of tests a week.
Again, I need to emphasize, government agencies. Ones you would know if I named them. Ones everyone in the country knows.
And we were in charge of getting their test results from the already over swamped labs back to the patients, who often were not allowed to quarantine while awaiting results.
The fastest we got our turnaround time to on any consistent basis was about 30 hours. Often it ballooned well into weeks.
There were a number of factors for this, but the big one was always understaffing.
The staff we did have were treated like trash. One of the big selling points of this company is how “trans friendly” it is to work there. That is a lie. Every trans employee on payroll had their dead name displayed to all other staff, and until I personally changed the system setup on my arrival, patient facing trans people’s dead names were displayed to patients.
Remember that thing about “hundreds of thousands of tests a week”?
I was able to change the way patient-facing names were displayed. I was not allowed or able to alter the way internal systems displayed trans people’s names. But I was assured that it’s fine, because once you get a legal name change, you’ll be given new system accounts with your new name!
Your old accounts with your dead name would still be displayed and associated with the new ones though.
This is the “trans friendly” working environment. We were allowed to be out of the closet, as long as we were willing to put up with that. And any attempts to get it altered were the result of those nasty little transgender ingrates not being thankful enough.
Meaning that by asking to use our own fucking names we were already in the disciplinary shitter.
Another big selling point is the ~racial diversity~. The CEO was a man of colour, and so were like four other people on staff!! Wow!!!!!!!
This, too, was laughable.
Once numbers started coming in about the care gap for COVID between English and Spanish speakers, and our Southwestern US service area began to have a separate and brutal backlog just of Spanish speaking patients, my employer encouraged me to interview potential hires who speak spanish.
Fair enough! We all wanted to do our part to help close the already massive mortality gap.
So, I found candidates, did interviews, hired them, trained them, etc. But I don’t speak Spanish. As a result, I appointed 2 assistant managers who do speak Spanish to assist me in managing, you know, like the job name.
So when my super contacted them directly, completely skipping me on the chain of command, and told them to stop all of our Spanish speakers from translating helpful simple messages to send to patients, and instead start translating medical and legal documents, they very reasonably assumed I was in the know and went ahead with it.
TO BE CLEAR, that could have ended my life, theirs, basically everyone involved. Everyone in the company would have been completely fucked. At that point, my subordinates, the people for whom I am wholly responsible, were doing everything from practicing medicine without licenses, to encouraging spanish speaking patients to enter contracts that no one on the fucking executive tier could even read.
The moment I found that out, I and the A.M.s immediately started trying to get actual medical translation services to do our documents. We collected them in a neat folder. We queried translation services. We got quotes. We contacted my super and the CEO, about this over and over again for months. In the late autumn, we received approval for one of the translation services.
The CEO decided at the last minute that having people with no medical or legal training draft medical and legal forms was fine and good actually, and refused to sign the contract or send the documents for translation.
The excuse I received was that the COVID emergency HIPAA relaxations would protect us.
That’s not how that works.
Throughout all of this, Spanish speaking employees were told to either keep doing medical and legal translation work, or lose their jobs.
Oh, did I mention everyone was working between 30 and 80 hours a week, and all of us were marked as “contractors” so the employer could tax evade? Don’t worry, we filed complaints with the labour bureau.
So the entire department was let go, and “rehired” as temps through a temp agency, which because it was a temp agency could keep them marked as contractors regardless of the facts.
This change was presented to all of us, myself included, as the company getting a new accountant to handle payroll.
So if you’re keeping score, we’ve covered racism, queerphobia, medical negligence, fraud, and a frankly uncountable number of deaths.
Let’s talk about the sheer negligence towards employees ourselves. If you’ve worked in near-death medical care before, or any number of emergency services really, you know that the standard benefit suite includes either a dedicated therapist for your staff, or access to peer support groups with other emergency and medical servants through your employer’s benefits program.
Do you know what our mental health benefits were for this company?
The CEO got on a fucking zoom call with us all one (1) time, and said that if we were feeling suicidal or traumatized by the work, to talk to him about it, and he would be our therapist.
Do you know how many people per fucking day we had to contact only to be told they had already died because our understaffing delays killed them? He doesn’t. He never listened when we told him.
But let me put the cherry on the “Oh baby, you can talk to me, oooh” sundae.
Anyone who “looked” or “sounded” female, regardless of actual or assigned gender, was subject to constant flirtations and slimy, overly personal compliments about our appearances. Fortunately, at 3 levels removed from the CEO (Executives > Department heads > Managers > Employees), most of the people under my management had relatively little contact with him.
I was not nearly so lucky.
The CEO of this company has a watersports (urination) fetish. I know this, because he told me so and attempted to get me to join him in it. I have no idea how many other people in the company he did this to. I mean, what the fuck was I supposed to do, risk losing my job to find out? I have a fucking family to support, people.
Not that it mattered.
Eventually, all of these abuses became too much for my subordinates. Productivity fell off a cliff. Delays were getting worse and worse. In a medical emergency like this, delays=deaths.
So, like a fucking idiot, when the department heads reached out to me to ask what they could do to improve productivity, I shot down their frankly insulting suggestion of raffling a $20 amazon gift card to patient facing employees, and instead suggested a very simple, “enroll us with a peer support group, every single person in this department has PTSD from working in this pandemic.”
They were confused by my assertion of PTSD. I was asked to compile a document of complaints, concerns, and weaknesses in our patient facing services.
I and the A.M.s did so. It was roughly 40 pages long, with each page given a known problem, the reasons why it was a problem, and some potential solutions that might inspire further solutions or be able to be implemented. We submitted it. There was no response.
A week passed.
I had been working 80 hour weeks for most of a year. I hadn’t even been able to take weekends. I took my first sick day, in a company with “unlimited vacation days.”
I received a call at 3PM.
I had been fired for “differences in communitcation.” If you’ve ever seen that “Problem Women of Color in the workplace” chart? Yeah.
So had most of my department, including every transgender member of the department, and several of our extremely limited in supply Spanish speakers, who were presumed to be “on my side.”
Some of them, I barely even knew beyond the formalities of the job, and they were punished anyway.
I lost my insurance, and as a result I lost access to my medications.
But the real problem? I lost my house. And not due to lack of payment.
I lost my house, because when I got the job we waited 6 months for stability’s sake, and then readied to move out of the area. I got a mortgage on the basis of my employer’s written guarantee to the bank that I would continue to be employed for the next year at a minimum.
With the mortgage approval in hand, we entered a sales contract on our existing home.
We got and accepted an offer just days before I was fired. To keep our house meant paying a 25,000 dollar broken contract fine. We didn’t have that. We had a 10% down payment for a modest fucking place in a cheaper area, which is less than half that.
But without a job, my mortgage approval was also voided, meaning we couldn’t buy a house either.
All of a sudden, we were homeless during the plague, because my employer wrote and signed a letter to a bank guaranteeing my future employ, and then changed his mind when too many people died due to his own negligence.
Oh yeah, one last thing: the job paid less than Pandemic unemployment Assistance.
...After that, well, it’s homelessness until just last month. I... if you’ve never been homeless it’s.
It blurs. Everything is happening constantly, except for all the ways in which you are endlessly, mind breakingly bored. Bored, overloaded, and always uncomfortable.
Obviously my health would have declined regardless. Malnutrition, stress, everything.
But I was also unmedicated.
It was hell. I was in hell. I don’t know if I can recover from it, to be honest.
I bounced back from being homeless as a child. Children are as resilient as they are stupid, and the monstrosity of homelessness was little more than a vaguely remembered loathing and a panicky fear that it would ever happen again.
A child who is dying is worthy of sympathy, even if it is meaningless coos from passers by. If they have family, they may be able to rely on them too.
An adult with the indignity to die homeless and crippled, according to the average passer by, is worthy only of disgust and perhaps even punishment for being such a worthless waste.
My reward for nearly killing myself in a desperate bid to help stem the tide of COVID was the destruction of not only my life, not only my entire family’s lives, but the lives of every single family of every single employee who worked with me.
And you know what’s worse?
Each one of us still did more to limit the lethal impact of COVID than the entire united states government.
It breaks something in you, going through that.
It makes you realize that hope is a fool’s game.
But, I have ever been a fool, and so, I continue to play.

Biryaniswap at a glance
As all farming dex are increasing their supply and burning less here we are unique than others like never mint single “Biryani” token more than 100k, another advantage of using or farming in Biryaniswap is they will get total 2 kinds of tokens, one is our main dex token and another is Raita as a bonus, it’s free to sell anytime, but 50% of Biryani token will be locked for 1 Year.
How BiryaniSwap works?
There are multiple generations to decentralized crypto exchanges and DeFi products. The first generation of decentralized exchanges used to order books, similar to conventional centralized exchanges. These order books compile a record of all open buy and sell orders for a particular asset. The spread between these prices determines the depth of the order book and the prevailing market price. On DEXs with order books, this information is often held on-chain during trades, while your funds remain off-chain in your wallet. Many DEXs specialize in a particular financial instrument that is executed in a decentralized manner.
Tumblr media
Decentralized exchanges take a different approach to buy and selling digital assets by operating without an intermediary organization clearing transactions, instead of leveraging self-executing smart contracts to facilitate trading. In the absence of intermediaries, DEXs take on a non-custodial framework.
Why use Biryani Swap?
You will find it a great choice to trust this platform as it has everything a comfortable and secure crypto service solution would need. Decentralized exchanges (DEXs) have been gathering steam quickly. It examines some individual DEXs and discusses how DEXs, in general, have helped to evolve trading from order-book management to liquidity pools and aggregators.
How to overcome the challenges with BiryaniSwap?
The challenge, however, is the fact that a large percentage of the world’s population is yet to adopt this technology and the use of cryptocurrencies in their everyday spending. Biryani Swap is a decentralized exchange (DEX) running on Binance Smart Chain BSC with Yield Farming and Raita Pools, a spin feature that lets you earn and win tokens. Daily Spin — Earn a free token by Lucky Spin up to the worth of $10, $50, $100, $500, $1000, the first attempt is free and you can buy for the next try. This has caused a setback to the main aim of introducing the use of cryptocurrencies which was to allow decentralized, trusted, and transparent financial transactions across the globe without limitations.
BIRYANI SWAP is a platform that provides transparent, easy, and safe financial services for its users. It provides its users with access to a wide range of financial products, with a particular focus on Yield Farming and Raita Pools. Anyone will get huge scope for earning money with this platform.

March 1 – Marx’s Theory of Alienation
The alienation of labour that takes place specifically in capitalist society is sometimes mistakenly described as four distinct types or forms of alienation. It is, on the contrary, a single total reality that can be analyzed from a number of different points of view. In the Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts, Marx discusses four aspects of the alienation of labour, as it takes place in capitalist society: one is alienation from the product of labour; another is alienation from the activity of labour; a third is alienation from one’s own specific humanity; and a fourth is alienation from others, from society. There is nothing mysterious about this fourfold breakdown of alienation. It follows from the idea that all acts of labour involve an activity of some sort that produces an object of some sort, performed by a human being (not a work animal or a machine) in some sort of social context.
Alienation in general, at the most abstract level, can be thought of as a surrender of control through separation from an essential attribute of the self, and, more specifically, separation of an actor or agent from the conditions of meaningful agency. In capitalist society the most important such separation, the one that ultimately underlies many, if not most other forms, is the separation of most of the producers from the means of production. Most people do not themselves own the means necessary to produce things. That is, they do not own the means that are necessary to produce and reproduce their lives. The means of production are, instead owned by a relatively few. Most people only have access to the means of production when they are employed by the owners of the means of production to produce under conditions that the producers themselves do not determine.
So alienation is not meant by Marx to indicate merely an attitude, a subjective feeling of being without control. Although alienation may be felt and even understood, fled from and even resisted, it is not simply as a subjective condition that Marx is interested in it. Alienation is the objective structure of experience and activity in capitalist society. Capitalist society cannot exist without it. Capitalist society, in its very essence, requires that people be placed into such a structure and, even better, that they come to believe and accept that it is natural and just. The only way to get rid of alienation would be to get rid of the basic structure of separation of the producers from the means of production. So alienation has both its objective and subjective sides. One can undergo it without being aware of it, just as one can undergo alcoholism or schizophrenia without being aware of it. But no one in capitalist society can escape this condition (without escaping capitalist society). Even the capitalist, according to Marx, experiences alienation, but as a “state”, differently from the worker, who experiences it as an “activity”. Marx, however, pays little attention to the capitalist’s experience of alienation, since his experience is not of the sort which is likely to bring into question the institutions that underpin that experience.
The first aspect of alienation is alienation from the product of labour. In capitalist society, that which is produced, the objectification of labour, is lost to the producer. In Marx’s words, “objectification becomes the loss of the object”. The object is a loss, in the very mundane and human sense, that the act of producing it is the same act in which it becomes the property of another. Alienation here, takes on the very specific historical form of the separation of worker and owner. That which I produced, or we produced, immediately becomes the possession of another and is therefore out of our control. Since it is out of my control, it can and does become an external and autonomous power on its own.
In making a commodity as a commodity (for the owner of the means of production) I not only lose control over the product I make, I produce something which is hostile to me. We produce it; he possesses it. His possession of what we produce gives him power over us. Not only are we talking here about the things that are produced for direct consumption. More basically, we are talking about the production of the means of production themselves. The means of production are produced by workers, but completely controlled by owners. The more we, the workers, produce, the more productive power there is for someone else to own and control. We produce someone else’s power over us. He uses what we have produced in order to wield his power over us. The more we produce, the more they have and the less we have. If I make a wage, I can work for forty or fifty years, and at the end of my life have not much more than I had at the beginning, and none of my fellow workers do either. Where has all this work gone? Some has gone into sustaining us so that we can go on working, but a great deal has gone into the expanded reproduction of the means of production, on behalf of the owners and their power. “Society” gets wealthier, but the individuals themselves do not. They do not own or control a greater proportion of the wealth.
The hostility of the product over which I relinquish my control in selling my labour – this also refers to the inhuman power of the impersonal laws of production . The laws of capitalist production have power over me. The boss, the capitalist owner himself, may simply be regarded as merely the representative of more remote, hidden, and inscrutable forces. His excuse, when he informs me that I am no longer needed, that he would have to close up the place or go broke if he didn’t do this, is no mere excuse. The capitalist himself is merely a priest who lives well off the service of capital, and not a god. When the god speaks, he too must jump, or he will find himself in my place, where god knows, no one wants to be. So, between him and me, it’s “nothing personal”. But this is exactly the problem, not an excuse.
The second aspect of alienation, alienation from the activity of labour, means that in labouring I lose control over my life-activity. Not only do I lose control over the thing I produce, I lose control over the activity of producing it. My activity is not self-expression. My activity has no relation to my desires about what I want to do, no relation with the ways I might choose to express myself, no relation with the person I am or might try to become. The only relation that the activity has with me is that it is a way of filling my belly and keeping a roof over my head. My life activity is not life-activity. It is merely the means of self-preservation and survival. In alienated labour, Marx claims, humans are reduced to the level of an animal, working only for the purpose of filling a physical gap, producing under the compulsion of direct physical need.
Alienation from my life-activity also means that my life-activity is directed by another. Somebody else, the foreman, the engineer, the head office, the board of directors, foreign competition, the world-market, the very machinery I am operating, it/they decide what and how and how long and with whom I am going to act. Somebody else also decides what will be done with my product. And I must do this for the vast majority of my waking hours on earth. What could and should be free conscious activity, and what they tell me I have contracted to do as a free worker, becomes forced labour. It is imposed by my need and by the other’s possession of the means of satisfying all needs. As a result I relate to my own activity as though it were something alien to me, as though it were not really mine, which it isn’t. I do not truly belong in this place, doing this thing over and over and over again, until I cannot even think or feel anything but the minutes ticking over until quitting time. The real me wants to be doing something.
My activity becomes the activity of another. Life comes to be split between alien work and escape from working, which for us is “leisure”. Because our own life activity becomes an alien power over our lives, activity itself gets a bad name. and we tend to avoid it when we are on our own, in our “free time”. Free time itself tends to become equated with freedom from activity, because activity is compulsion. Freedom is equated with the opposite of action and production; freedom is consumption, or just passive, mindless “fun”, or just blowing off steam. Only in class society is there such an equation of activity with pain and of leisure with inactivity or sloth, for activity under alienated labour is not self-expression but self-denial. All our capacities are parceled out into marketable skills. We talk about “human resources” or youth as “our most precious resource”, all of which pseudo-humanist jargon expresses the same reality, that human labour is turned into a commodity to be bought and sold like any other.
As this civilization moves on we get, of course, an ever finer and more detailed separation of hand and brain, of sense and intelligence, manifested in the truncated capacities of both masters and wage-slaves. Some people are likely to spend their entire lives developing the capacity to locate defects in the ends of cans. This becomes their forced contribution to the human species. And it is in this sense that we are not without cause, in the latest stages of capitalism, of thinking of ourselves as appendages of a machine. In a sense, capitalism involves a devolution even behind the work-animal. At least the work-animal is an enslaved total organism. Even a tool or a slave can be used to carry out many different things. But by the time you get to the highest stage of capitalism, human functions can be more dehumanized than that of a tool: you become the appendage of a machine, just part of a tool, a cog in the vast machine of production.
By many routes, then, alienation from the product and from the activity of labour lead up to and involve alienation in its third aspect, alienation from the self or from the human essence. It is not only the product that becomes an alien power. It is not only that self-development becomes self-denial. Internally related to these others is a loss of self. To alienate my labour-power, to be forced to sell it as a commodity on the market, is to lose my life-activity, which is my very self. It is to become other than myself. Sometimes we speak innocently enough of being beside ourselves or feeling remote from ourselves; or sometimes we use the language of the search for identity and authenticity, of not knowing who we are or not recognizing who we’ve become. From a Marxian point of view, we are talking about something social and historical rather than something metaphysical or existential. At a deeper level still, the sense of loss of identity or loss of meaning is an expression, but one still alienated itself, of our real loss of humanity, alienation from the human “species-being”, as Marx sometimes calls it. This is one thing Marxists mean when they talk about de-humanization.
There is a further aspect of alienation from self which Marx pays little attention to in his later work, but which receives some mention in the Manuscripts and remains important at an implicit level. And it is perhaps most appropriate to discuss it in relation to alienation from self. This further aspect is alienation from sensuousness. Marx conceives of the history of human labour as, among other things, a formation of the human senses themselves. The human senses are not passive mechanisms, a blank slate on which the world leaves its mark more or less clearly and strongly. Marx understands sense perception itself to be the outcome of a process of the labour of a historical subject. The sensuous forms in which we perceive things and their relations is therefore the product of the history of an active subject. The sense themselves are not given, once and for all, but open to education, broadening, refining, formation and re-formation.
If the senses themselves are a product of the process of human collective self-constitution, it is meaningful to speak of an alienation of sensuousness. In capitalist society, our life activity is alienated. As a result we engage in inherently sensuous activities, but in an alienated fashion, almost exclusively, that is, for non-sensuous, extrinsic, extraneous purposes. In order to satisfy virtually any need, we must in capitalist society, work through the medium of money. Most of the things we do, we do in order to make money or to put ourselves in the position to make money, or improve our capacities to make money. There is very little, if anything that a human being could imagine wanting, that is not offered to us as a possible object of a cash transaction. Thus the things with which we are engaged are never approached with an eye to either their own intrinsic value or to their human value in a broader sense. We do not relate most of the time to most things in terms of their intrinsically sensuous and aesthetic reality. The imperatives of capitalist society thus enter into our conscious and semi-conscious experience even at the level of sense and perception itself. We are taught to literally see and feel things as utilities, as abstract counters in the process of making still more money. We become alienated from what Marx calls our subjective human sensibilities. Our senses are not so much animalized or brutalized as they are mechanized. If our life-activity were our own, this would necessarily involve the intensive cultivation of our capacity for aesthetic appreciation of sensuous reality. Humans are, after all, according to Marx, the only species that can produce in conscious appreciation of the laws of beauty. Under alienated labour, sense experience becomes a modifiable sign for things and relations that can be turned into money, the sign of all things. Because our activity is degraded to the level of mechanical subservience to crude needs, or, in reaction to that we perhaps become aesthetes, we regard everything only from the standpoint of the use it can be put. Or we come to attach a perception of beauty or aesthetic value to that which commands a high price. We can be impressed with the supposed aesthetic value of something because it is expensive.
This relation to everything, even the objects of sense and beauty, in terms of its usefulness to the expanded reproduction of capital means we no longer have an eye for the thing itself. Oriented mainly to pieces of the world whose monetary value means that they are essentially interchangeable, we are brought that much more easily to relate to ourselves and each other in this way. We begin to evaluate ourselves and each other in terms of the amount of money we can make. Or parts of ourselves can be ranked in such terms. We are less able, if still able, to perceive and appreciate the intrinsic qualities of anything, even including ourselves. This dehumanization of the senses, and of perception and of judgement, is not something accidental to the dehumanization of humans.
We are thus led to the fourth aspect, alienation from other people, or from society. Once the traditional community (which understood itself as natural) is broken down, human beings become essentially potentially useful or threatening objects. One can now have enemies in a new sense. Only with the breakdown of primitive communism does man become a wolf to man. “Man is a wolf to man” (homo homini lupus ) was one of Hobbes’s favourite sayings. “Wolflike” behaviour can and does occur in “primitive” societies and between such societies, but it is not the principle of those societies. It does become the central and organizing principle of class societies. In the market it is hard to say that the antagonism of classes becomes more severe, but the antagonism among individuals certainly increases. Now, according to Marx, “human nature” must be grasped as “the ensemble of social relations”. It is not simply our neuro-physiological constitution or our DNA that makes us behave or act selfishly. We live, according to Marx, in a society in which each individual must see in every other, not the possibility of his liberty, but its limitation. Every other becomes an obstacle to me, but – and this is important too – a needed obstacle, a customer, a client, a creditor, a debtor, an employer or employee. (We haven’t even come up with a better replacement for patriarchalist terms such as husband and wife than “partner” – which suggests nothing so much as a boardroom full of lawyers). The other is a rival. It is not that cooperation here is impossible. In fact we learn to coordinate our activities on an ever more grand scale and complex level. It is that this cooperation can only take place as the coincidence of separate and competing “enlightened” self-interests.
In feudal society, or in Aristotle’s polis, one’s life-activity was directly determined by one’s pre-ordained social status. Along with this, however, came a solidary bond integrating the occupants of the various strata. The lord-peasant relationship was a direct, personal bond of two-way loyalty and duty (and even affection). The exploitation of the peasant was an integral part of a patriarchal relation. Even though the solidarity of such societies was a pseudo-solidarity, a solidarity based upon exploitation, it was still a solidarity. What the market society does is to relentlessly smash the patriarchal links between lord and peasant. Each individual is to be thrown upon his own resources in order to make his fortune or not, as the case may be. The market society severs the patriarchal link between lord and peasant, lord and lord, peasant and peasant, and substitutes for it the cash nexus. For the personal relationship is substituted one of personal indifference. The bottom line of the contractual relationship is cash. Previously the worker worked for the community either directly or in personal subservience to his superior, and the subservience of labour was an essential feature of a community felt to have the unity of an organism. Previously it was assumed that community was only possible as the subordination of one social organ to another.
Now, however, my work is not service. Now I work for money, which I will spend any damn way I feel like. As a result, for Marx, although this is in one way a less illusory of living, since it doesn’t need to depend on religious or mythical foundations to justify an explicit and clear hierarchy, in another way it is more illusory. My freedom is largely only in appearance. In reality my life-activity is still given up to a superior who is a superior, even though he is formally and by law my equal. In his later work, Marx will especially concentrate on the fact that everything is translated into money terms, and that all relations are mediated by money. In capitalist society, he says, “everyone carries the social bond in his pocket.”
Although Marx does not in the 1844 Manuscripts make the point directly and explicitly, there is a direct connection between Marx’s thoughts on alienation from society and his critique of the state. Those who wish to follow this theme further should read On the Jewish Question. For Marx, the existence of the state implies what we could call a political alienation. Often the Marxian notion of the abolition or the withering away of the state is met by the sort of puzzled reaction one might reserve for the abolition of the sun, moon and stars. But Marx would not call the operation of something like Rousseau’s general will a state. The form of direct self-government comprised in the idea of the sovereignty of the general will would not be considered a state form. The state, according to Marx, is the set of institutions that arises in order to hold together a society that is continually falling apart. The state is a function of other, deeper social antagonisms that are in principle corrigible. It is a function of the universal individual antagonisms of class societies, but especially a function of class division itself, and of the possibility of open class antagonism. The state is a necessary means of coercion and coordination once society can no longer hold itself together by other means, or before it has learned how to do so once again.
The state is an integral part of class society, not something apart from or beyond it; not something neutral and capable of standing disinterestedly above all particular interests. Whereas theorists like Hegel would argue that in the modern state individuals were in actual reality reconciled and unified, Marx maintains that the state is necessary only because of the real antagonisms class societies generate and sustain among individuals. Nor do individuals in the modern, liberal or even democratic-capitalist state really find a community of equals. Instead, in the state, they come together to deny the inequality and separateness that is their real existence in social and economic life. Their coming together in the political community of the state is thus an illusion, because they are separated in fact. The solidarity of earlier, more organic forms of society is supposedly recovered, in bourgeois society, in the political relationship of free and equal citizens. But this is a pseudo-solidarity, given the lie by the many substantial inequalities outside the formal equality established by constitutional law, and by the fact that the powerful within the private sphere have the power to reach out and have the state work primarily in their fundamental interests. As the French writer, Anatole France once said, “the law, in its majestic equality, forbids rich and poor alike from begging alms, stealing bread and sleeping under bridges.” It is only because in real life people are alienated from one another through the cash nexus that is increasingly the only thing that connects them, that they must solidarize in an ideal and false unity a formally equal citizens.
Here the notion of an “inverted” or “double” world appears that will become important later on in Marx’s notion of “commodity fetishism”. As a corrective to, and also as a mystification of, a contradictory reality, a supplementary but illusory reality is invented and, as it were, laid on top of the first. What is illusory is not the actual power of the state, but the notions that the state is the only thing that can hold a society of human beings together, and that it can do this while sustaining and expressing the freedom and equality of all its citizens. The state is just such an illusory reality, existing by virtue of the misperception that the antagonisms of bourgeois society are the natural and inevitable, eternal and essential antagonisms of human beings as such. And, in truth, it is a necessary and real illusion – to bourgeois society. Thus, the state cannot be abolished, as some anarchists would have it, by the fiat of individuals. The abolition of the state depends on the prior transformation and abolition of class society. The state functions essentially to maintain society in its present form, as a society based upon class divisions rooted in the way material life is produced and reproduced. But the abolition of class society and its state would not mean the disappearance of differences or of the need for politics. If anything politics would be more prevalent than ever (as opposed to the administration of a subject population) – if what we mean by politics is something like individuals communicating and acting together to resolve conflicts between human needs and social conditions. The existence of processes through which individuals decide upon common policies and common action is not what Marx would call the state.

Second Chance Christmas {{ December 24 :: Four Years Ago }}
Tumblr media
Four years ago, Christmas eve was devastating.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/27832405/chapters/69012459
Full chapter under the cut.
The pit at the bottom of Joey’s stomach had been aching for the last three days.  It was like he swallowed hot coals and they refused to stay down, bile creeping up his throat every time he passed by that closed office door.
The house should have felt warmer—there must have been fifteen human bodies radiating energy and buzzing around the house.  He’d been preparing in a way—a strange sort of supervisory role he hadn’t particularly desired—for the Architectural Digest spread on their house.  Joey had been told that the article was going to place special attention on the picture perfect family that Seto Kaiba had accrued.
What a fascinating figure, the journalist had said, he must be a very interesting person to be married to.
Joey couldn’t remember the last time he’d felt interested in the life he and the CEO had built.  Instead the décor and ambiance of their home was so cold and so superficial, like Joey lived in a hotel.
With such esteemed guests visiting on Christmas Eve, with such a paper trail of coverage, the administration of the Kaiba Estate had gone completely crazy.  Joey couldn’t leave a glass of water on the counter and expect it to be there in an hour.
Even the kids were with a stylist this morning.  It had seemed unfathomably frivolous and somehow also a bit duplicitous.  Were they really trying to convince the readers of Architectural Digest that their children had an intuitive sense of fashion?  Alexis was still not out of her terrible two’s, and the more layers of anything they draped over her, the greater the risk that they would trigger some sort of tantrum.
He’d deserve that, Joey thought, meanly.  He had half a mind to interrupt Kaiba in his office and ask him that simple question: What are you trying to prove?  Who could possibly care how Kaiba’s five-year-old son dressed?  What their kitchen looked like?
How well his husband was handling the spotlight?
If anyone really asked, he didn’t know what he would say.  No one from this world ever really asked him how he was doing, not in that caring sincere way that real friends do, and so he lived half a life sometimes—the exterior half.  The part that was supposed to be making cookies, and volunteering at the daycare even though the kids’ nannies were really more involved, and posting fun little videos on Instagram.  He had his own publicist, and he wasn’t supposed to even do that without approval—he understood the reasons but it was like every drop of authenticity was drained… all that remained was the flawless artifice of a live lived perfectly.
And the worst part was he was supposed to have an ally in all this.  One person he was on the journey with.
But instead, Kaiba felt almost like a client.  A person who had engaged him for husband and fathering services, who had certain specifications, certain resource allotments.
There was a forcefield around the office door.
Not a literal one, though Kaiba probably could have managed that if he had tried.  It was decidedly low tech.  Heavy mahogany, thick enough to withstand an explosion, and mysteriously devoid of the mistletoe and holly that had been draped over every inch of the house in an attempt to seem more festive and spirited than goddamn Martha Stewart.
The anger radiating out of the room must have been enough to keep the decorators far away.
Over the last year, Joey had been subjected to some updates about Kaiba Corp. affairs.  They had just released a new phone model that incorporated holographic images for video chatting or something.  The launch had been a success, Joey assumed, because everything that Kaiba touched in the marketplace turned to gold.  Kaiba’s failures were few and far between, and his successes shined brightly enough that nothing bad seemed to stick.
The technology was supposed to be able to harness the capabilities that rendered Duel Monsters so realistically in Duel Disks, and use them connect people to distant loved ones with compelling holograms.  It was a technical masterpiece that had him and Kaiba travelling cross country to attend industry awards and galas.  It was exhausting, and half the time he felt like some sort of accessory.  Like Kaiba’s personal assistant had flown in the right suit, the right watch, and Joey to complete the ensemble.
It wasn’t like that the whole time.  There was a period, really quite a long time at first, where it felt like a game.  Joey’d try to smuggle food into venues that didn’t allow it or smuggle it out of galas for later, they’d conspiratorially make fun of other guests—especially mocking the ever-present Pegasus.  Sometimes Joey would pull one of his old tricks—they’d graffiti a bathroom stall after defiling it or do some harmless property destruction at a fancy house.
Weird nonsense too: who could steal the strangest object from the von Schroeder mansion, most absurd selfie with a world leader, that sort of thing.  Little adventures that had wracked up a collection of items that they could never properly explain: Seto’s signed copy of Warren Buffet’s biography, crystal low ball glasses from Pegasus’ house that didn’t match the set that Seto already had, and a very strange cellphone photo of Joey holding the coat of the Prime Minister of Canada while the head of state was puking in a bush behind him.
It had been fun.  It had been so fun.  Once they had let their guard down around each other, they had found excellent playmates.  Joey could be almost as devious as Kaiba under the right circumstances, and he was playful.  And Kaiba was always gunning for a competition.  A rivalry, any rivalry, any time.
It was not like marrying his best friend, but it was like marrying his favorite co-conspirator.
But over time, something about the events had turned so routine that it was merely another part of Joey’s very draining job of trophy husband.  And the snarky comments he was getting about the suit sizing from the stylist was the last thing he needed.  It just reminded him that he wasn’t a person to these people—he was an accessory, a decoration that could be trimmed and measured and posed just so like all the tinsel in the house.
Even if Joey hadn’t been living and breathing the new technology by virtue of listening to his husband’s egotistical acceptance speeches every other weekend for a month, Joey had seen the advertisements that had polluted his social media streams and had threaded themselves in between videos.  He’d even been featured in one—and he had to admit that hadn’t minded filming that—talking with a virtual Yugi, still bearing his King of Games title and the wild tri-colored hair, with his Duel Disk strapped to his arm and belt still wrapped around his neck.
That had been fine, but several of the other ads were geared at families.  And although Kaiba had for the most part kept the family out of the limelight, Joey’s publicist had been pushing harder for more of that humanizing presence.
“Everyone knows what your husband was like during ‘Battle City,’ and subsequent tournaments and product launches.  He had a legend’s status and we could work with the ‘Rogue Genius’ sort of thing,” the publicist had kindly explained, his tone perhaps a touch demeaning.  “But Kaiba Corporation isn’t just selling toys anymore.  And people do not want to buy the most essential equipment of their lives from a rebellious teen.  They want to see a man with integrity.  With a family, even an unorthodox one.”
Joey rolled his eyes at the last comment.
They hadn’t built this family in order to sell more products, it had been so… organic.  A natural expression of love.  Being in their thirties, having so much love for each other that it made so much sense to share it with children.  They could do it right this time.  All they had to do was the opposite of what their parents had done.
And they had!  Kaiba never raised his voice and Joey never picked a fight.  It was everything they hadn’t had growing up.  It was stable.  Neat.
And it had become absolutely miserable.  A set of formal relationships, scrupulously maintained and completely aesthetically flawless.  And now, it was even a saleable commercial product.
Joey was so close to breaching the forcefield and getting the door open, but he could just hear the faint traces of a conference call behind the door.
The phantoms were trying to tell Kaiba something about some supply chain problem.  Billions of dollars in contracts and products were flying back and forth in complex negotiations that rose to the level of international affairs.
Suddenly Joey’s problem—do the kids actually need a stylist, Kaiba?—seemed unfathomably small.  Heroically unimportant, embarrassingly trivial.
Did he even want to walk into whatever shitstorm was going on in the study?  Kaiba had his job, and Joey had his.
The only difference was that people seemed to value Kaiba’s job, and Joey’s was increasingly shitty.
Finally one of the maids—Joey thought she might even be in charge of that team, but was not technically the household manager, which was a different staff person—shook him from his frustrated position just outside of Kaiba’s study door.
“They’re ready to start taking the pictures,” she said.  It was so neutral, and Joey realized, a bit slowly, that she didn’t like him.
People usually liked him.  If they didn’t, he probably had picked a fight with them or something.  Anyone who spent real time with him couldn’t resist his signature Joey charm.  Maybe she’s new? Joey wondered.  Or was he just… not the same anymore?
Within the same minute, the children’s stylist beamed out of the playroom, with much the same announcement.  She was all smiles—and who wouldn’t be with such a fun niche.  They both looked at Joey.
The publicist was scaling the stairs, hand skimming the highly decorated banister and leaping over the twirls of pine leaves and luxurious red velvet ribbons, announcing that the Architectural Digest reporters were ready to begin.
Ah, it was time for him to do his job.  The only thing that he was supposed to really do.  Face his husband.
Joey could see why everyone else dreaded it so much.  Why he was so well-compensated for the task.
Joey extended his wrist, with a slow trepidation he had learned as a duelist, and tapped.
Within seconds Kaiba was at the door, eyes all blue fire, like a lion interrupted during a feast of antelope gizzards.
“Eh, we’ve got the thing?  The Architectural whatever thing?”  Joey figured the posse of people gathered behind him made half of his point.
“Yes.” Kaiba said, clipped, and looking still slightly pissed.
“So uh, you good?  You look good,” Joey gave him a once over, and was rewarded, as always with the handsome view of a perfectly put together Seto Kaiba.
Kaiba rewarded the compliment with a smirk.  “Yes.”
And the whole team descended together, with two of the more intense nannies handling the children and joining at the back of the group.
When finally down the stairs, Alexis was passed into Joey’s arms, and Atticus was handed off to Kaiba.
“How are your piano lessons going?” Kaiba asked Atticus, as if he was a colleague and not a five-year-old.
“Awesome!” Atticus answered with a smile.
“Do you know any duets yet?”
“Twinkle Twinkle Little Star!” Atticus announced, pleased with himself.
Kaiba stood for a moment, as if wracking his brain for any memory of the song.  Then he nodded.  “We can start with that.”
The Architectural Digest reporter looked at Kaiba, having expected to have his full attention immediately.  Indeed, the reporter looked like the kind of person who expected to have anyone’s attention at any time.  Joey had spared the man a Google search at some point before the meeting, and he had been impressed by the guy’s list.  He had done articles on the interior design aesthetic—and the corresponding family culture—of two sitting presidents, the prime ministers of both Austria and Australia, and Oprah.  Oprah.
He dressed like it too.  His silk scarf was recognizably Hermes, and Joey could tell that his whole thing was how fancy people were expected to dress.  Flashy and complicated and matching, but only sort of?
The stylist had intentionally been playing up the new, everyman qualities of the updated Kaiba family.  It was a stark contrast to the Visual Kei inspired aesthetic that his partner used to wear, but honestly?  Other than changing the t-shirt to cashmere and making the jeans cost about $400 more, Joey felt like he looked pretty much the same as he used to.  His shoes were a lot less comfortable now.
The reporter almost raised a hand to interrupt, and Joey instinctually went on damage control.
“Hey, great to finally meet you!  Welcome to our house.  Looks like you’re in for a concert to start off!” Joey smiled warmly, and was pleased to see it mirrored in the reporter’s face.
“Your husband is an interesting fellow, huh?”  The reporter had something of a pan-Atlantic accent to his voice, making him sound a little bit like he fell out of the Turner Classic Movies channel.
“You don’t know the half of it!  But I’m sure he’ll warm up,” Joey lied.  Joey reached forward to loop an arm around his husband’s shoulders as they continued to make their way toward the grand piano in the living room.  “What are you doing?” he whispered in his ear.
Kaiba spared him a dark, sideways glance.  “I am trying… to demonstrate human connection.  That’s the instruction I received.”
Joey laughed, though it wasn’t easy.  “Well, could you smile or something?  Introduce yourself?  It looks disjointed like this, I think.”
Kaiba’s attention diverted, announcing that the conversation was over.  Joey withdrew, his speaking time already terminated.
But the comment made enough of an impact.  When they arrived in the living room, which had been festooned with just about every wintry icon available in the tri-state area—including a row of pinecones and decorative wreathing along the piano and the biggest tree that could fit in the tall space jammed with more lights and baubles than should be possible—Kaiba deigned to greet the guest.
Kaiba gestured to the piano, and Atticus happily plopped down.  Kaiba joined him, much more calmly.  “Now, for a rendition of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,” Kaiba announced, rolling back the fallboard.
Atticus nodded mutely.  Someone had clearly drilled into him the importance of not saying anything weird, and he had interpreted it as not saying anything at all.
Kaiba began the initial keystrokes of the song, only for Atticuls to slam both of his hands down on the keys and completely startle him.
Kaiba instantly stopped playing, but Atticus kept going cubby child fingers on random keys.
“Do you… actually know how to play the song,” Kaiba asked, as Atticus started winding down.
Atticus beamed, “Yeah Oto-san, but this is a special Christmas remix!”
Kaiba smiled softly, shockingly genuine, and Joey was sure the cameras captured it.  “Very well.”  Kaiba diverted his attention away from the piano.  “Now that we have performed a Christmas remix, I suppose we may as well continue with the interview.”
The reporter seemed to be in good humor, eyes energic as they tracked Kaiba and Atticus back to the couch to join Joey and Alexis.
Like a flip had been switched, Kaiba acted like he had a human interest in the whole situation, but let Joey do most of the talking.
Joey thought maybe he was nervous.  He was so comfortable when the topic turned to the impact of Kaiba Corp., on international growth this or technology development that.  But sitting there, on a couch laden with thick green and red ribbon, being asked about how he balanced raising children with being in the office, he looked almost nauseated.
“I have a great partner,” Kaiba said, robotic and dead-eyed.  “And great help.  I could not do it alone.”
Joey tried to beam, but it felt like a brutally minimizing note.
A great partner?  It was a performance review, not a term of affection.
After the interview finally ended and the additional staff began to disperse, Joey found himself trailing Kaiba back to his study.  The kids were whisked away—Atticus already had another piano lesson and Alexis was due in the ballet studio.  She had made the cut as one of the youngest among the 130 children to participate in the New York City Ballet Company production of Nutcracker, scoring a prestigious position as one of the angels.  It was very impressive and very cute, but it felt a bit odd to watch the two-and-change-year-old have so many appointments.  She just spun around a little… Joey had to assume it was another instance of her name opening doors.  But it was adorable, and she was a pretty serious toddler, and who was he to get in the way of high performance.
She said she liked it, as much as a two-year-old can articulate that they like anything, and he didn’t want to burst anyone’s bubble.
So, after everyone had scattered, it was just Kaiba in his study, and Joey feeling empty.
Joey knocked on the door.  When he didn’t get a response, he opened it anyway.
“What?” Kaiba snapped, not looking away from his laptop.
“I…” Joey thought about what he wanted to say, but nothing came to mind immediately, except for the simple truth.  “I can’t handle this.”
Kaiba didn’t look up.  “You can’t handle what?  Talking to a guy for an hour?  You did nothing.”
When Joey didn’t immediately leave, Kaiba paused in his typing, maybe realizing that he couldn’t really account for what had happened prior to his entrance.  “Do you need more help?”
Joey sank into the companion chair in the study.  “I mean no, I think there’s probably too much staff.  Do the kids really need a stylist?”
Kaiba looked up.  “I am so busy, Jounouchi.  Do you really want to debate the merits of having someone pick the children’s clothes for a photoshoot?  That cannot possibly be the best use of your time, and I know it’s not the best use of mine.”
Joey met his eyes for a second, but lost his determination.  “I just… I miss how it was. Things didn’t used to be like this, right?”
Kaiba sighed.  “Things have always been like this.  What do you mean?”
“You know what, never mind.  It’s fine.  It’s just, I guess it’s Christmas eve.”  Kaiba didn’t acknowledge the statement and Joey left the study, heart twisted, feeling more alone than he had in years.  “We’re supposed to do family stuff.”
Kaiba went back to his computer.  “We did.  And I’m sure more is scheduled for tomorrow—I know that I’m scheduled to attend one of Alexis’ performances tomorrow.  You should check your calendar, I am sure we have a dinner scheduled somewhere tonight… I think at the Governor’s estate.  You should check with someone about the required attire.  But not me, Jounouchi, I really am busy.”  The chillin blue eyes didn’t even follow Joey as he stalked out of the room.
Joey didn’t say it—he couldn’t find the will to say it yet, and he didn’t say it for another year.  But in that moment, Joey knew that their marriage was over.

‘Good evening gentlemen,‘ a female voice calls from behind the bar, ‘you must be here for Robert and Mark. They’re outside. I’ll be right there to take your order.‘ Chris can’t help but stare for a second. Who is this woman and why has he never seen her before? She looks beautiful. Golden waves brush her shoulders, heart shaped lips painted red, rosy cheeks, and bright blue eyes. While Tom is already standing on the doorstep to outside, Chris hesitates. ‘Chris, are you coming?’
‘Oh, yeah, of course,‘ Chris stutters and tries to pretend he wasn’t staring at the bartender just a second ago. The two venture outside to find a deck atop the green sea in front of them. It could seat a pretty big party if you squeezed, but by the way the seating spaces are spread on the deck you can tell that that’s not what they’re going for. It’s cozy, with string lights everywhere, candles on the tables, celebrities littered throughout the place looking completely at rest. Some are with others chatting away, others are reading, some are simply enjoying the music playing through the outside speakers. ‘Ah, you found it,‘ Robert calls over to the two men walking. They gain a few looks, a few greetings, and walk over to Robert and Mark where they sit down. ‘Welcome to The Dutchess’ Garden,‘ Mark says, raising his glass to the two. Chris looks confused at the shape glas. It stands on a leg like a wine glass, but has an hourglass kind of shape, with the upper part cut in half so that the top bit is wider than the bottom. On the table is a bottle in a wine cooler filled with ice water, but it doesn’t look like it’s wine. ‘So what is this place,‘ Tom asks as both of them take a seat. He doesn’t seem as confused about the glass. ‘It’s a kind of secret bar for celebrities who don’t always want cameras in their face,‘ Mark tells them, ‘Robert took me here the first time we filmed something from Marvel together.‘ ‘And how did you find it,‘ Tom asks Robert.  ‘Robert helped my father find a place to start it,‘ a female voice says and the group sees the bartender from before stand at their table. ‘Gentlemen, meet Emma Meijers,‘ Robert introduces, ‘her dad and I go way back. He helped me out when I was stuck in the Netherlands once and we kept in touch. Anyway, she runs the place now.‘ Chris looks her up and down with starts in his eyes. Emma is not your typical skinny model. She has an hourglass figure with a little more sand that is perfectly accentuated by the copper wrap dress that she wears. Though the dress conveys a mature look, her kiwi socks and white sneakers don’t. They mix the playful with the mature to come out with a sort of teasing image. She has her ears pierced in multiple places and wears golden rings and dangling earrings in them. Around her neck are two different golden necklaces. One a simple chain, the other a chain with a coin hanging from it. She wears a brown hair tie around her wrist and has chipped, red nailpolish. Chris is mesmerized, but that doesn’t mean the others don’t stare. ‘Thank you for the introduction Robert,‘ Emma smiles, ‘I hope you have told your guests about the secrecy of The Dutchess.‘ ‘I have not,‘ Robert turns back to us, ‘The Dutchess is a secret bar like Mark said, but she also asks for her guests to keep the secret. Not all celebrities know about her and she tries to keep her clientele the right crowd by being a members only and invite only bar. So no telling others until The Dutchess decides you can be a member.‘ Emma nods with a smile. ‘Now that we have that out of the way,‘ she says, ‘Mark and Robert are enjoying some jonge jenever, but I can get you anything else. We have several different types of Dutch and Belgian beers, we have gin though I would suggest trying the jenever over gin, and we also have some different kinds of whiskey.‘ She looks at Chris with a wink. ‘Of course we also have ice if you need ot water it down.‘ A laugh erupts from the group. ‘Emma, I think they’ll like the jenever. Can you get us two more glasses and another bottle of water?‘ ‘Of course Robert, I’ll be right back.‘ ‘She’s a feisty one,‘ Chris huffs, crossing his arms in front of his chest. ‘Come on Chris, you can’t seriously tell me a pretty girl made you sulk because she called you a pussy for drinking whiskey on the rocks,‘ Robert laughs. Chris sighs, but Tom is already in the next topic. ‘So it’s The Dutchess is spelled with a T because they’re Dutch? That’s such a fun play on words,‘ he comments, ‘but how do they keep their staff quiet?‘ ‘From what she told me,‘ Robert explains, ‘they ask the staff to sign a contract that requires them to keep The Dutchess secret. Otherwise they get fired and are sued.‘ ‘So they’d never hire you,‘ Chris jokes, trying to take the attention away from him more. But it backfires as Emma reappears with the glasses and the water. ‘But I wouldn’t hire you either,‘ she says, ‘you’re too big and I doubt anyone other than Chivas would want a superhero that drinks whiskey on the rocks.‘ ‘Is this how it’s going to be tonight,‘ Chris asks, trying to sound jokingly. ‘I mean, I could start asking why you consider jellybeans a food or ask you if you can drive,‘ she jabs at him. ‘How do you know all this stuff?‘ ‘Dutchess secret,‘ she teases with a wink as she puts down the glasses. ‘Don’t sell yourself short Emma,‘ Mark smiles, ‘she’s a great hostess and because you can’t get in here without giving a name, she researches people before they come here so they get the best service.‘ ‘And she shames everyone who drinks whiskey on the rocks,‘ Robert adds, ‘she did the same thing when we brought Hiddleston here. He drinks Jameson on the rocks.‘ ‘You’re not supposed to drink whiskey on the rocks,‘ she says in her own defense, ‘it’s a pure product. You should drink it pure. Or if it’s just a temperature thing, you could ask for a cold glass, but-‘ ‘You’re rambling darling,‘ Robert says with a smile. She tucks some hair behind her ear with a small blush forming on her cheeks. ‘So sorry about that,‘ she says, ‘but to ramble on a little longer for our newcomers. The drink you have in font of you is jonge jenever. It’s the drink gin was based of off and it is far superior. I don’t just say this because I am Dutch and it is a Dutch drink. It’s genuinely better. You’re supposed to fill your glass to the brim and drink it cold and pure. Enjoy.‘ She walks off, walking past a few other tables to have a chat and a laugh. Chris watches her go around. ‘She knows a lot about all that,‘ Tom says as Robert pours all of them a glass of jenever. ‘She studied it,‘ Robert tells them, ‘she knows a lot. Wine is her area of expertise. She is not really a sommelier, but she was studying it before she had to take over here.‘ ‘Take over?‘ Tom looks a bit concerned at the word choice Robert had made. It would imply something bad happened. 'We shouldn’t gossip about Emma,’ Mark says, ‘she took over for her dad. That’s all.‘ Chris nods agreeing, but he wants to know more. Not like this though. He wants to hear her tell it. In fact, he wants her to tell him anything. Her voice is wonderful to listen to. Even when she makes fun of him.
‘I hate to be a buzzkill, but I’m doing the last round,‘ Emma says with a kind smile, ‘I don’t mind staying open a little longer, but I do have to move you guys inside if you want to stay.‘ The four men look at her like she spoke gibberish and only now realize that they’re the only ones left. ‘That’s alright Emma, I think Mark and I will be leaving,‘ Robert says and turns to Tom, ‘Tom, do you need a ride into town?‘ ‘Yes, that’d be great.‘ ‘Good, Emma, would you be a doll and tell Marcus we’re ready to leave?‘ ‘Of course,‘ she says and scurries back inside to warn the driver who had been sitting inside the whole evening. Emma had offered him a book of hers when he finished his, which she did more often when drivers had to stay for a long time. ‘Your driver has been here the whole time,‘ Tom asks in amazement. ‘Yes, Emma takes great care of him,‘ Robert tells him, ‘makes him virgin cocktails and coffee or a meal if they want.‘ ‘She really is a great hostess,‘ Mark adds as he gathers his stuff. Marcus walks outside to alert the men that he’s ready to get them home. ‘You’ll be fine, right Chris?‘ ‘Oh yeah, don’t worry about me.‘ The group says goodbye and Chris is left alone, outside, enjoying the view and the quietly played music. Emma walks outside with a beer bottle in hand. She sits down next to Chris to enjoy the view with him. ‘I’m sorry, did you want me out,‘ he asks Emma a bit shocked. ‘No, it’s fine,‘ she says, ‘I’m done inside, so I thought I’d join you for a drink. If you don’t mind, of course.‘ ‘I enjoy the company,‘ he says with a smile. She watches his face with a smile. There’s a slight drunk blush on his cheeks, but nothing too bad. She saw he had drank the least out of all of them, drinking more water to keep himself grounded. ‘Can I pour you another one or are you good?‘ ‘If you’re not going to shame me, I’d like a whiskey on the rocks.‘ She chuckles. ‘What kind?‘ ‘Surprise me.‘ ‘That’s not a kind of whiskey,‘ she teases, but she’s off before he can jab back at her. He watches her walk away. She is truely stunning. He wonders how a business like this keeps existing, but they probably ask more for drinks or something. ‘I played it safe,‘ she says as she hands him a glass, ‘it’s Chivas.‘ He smiles and absentmindedly puts an arm over the back of the bench they’re sitting on, almost brushing her shoulder with his hand. ‘Wow, you’ve been liberal with the ice,‘ he jokes. ‘Whiskey on the rock,‘ she laughs, ‘if you want more, there’s an ice machine behind the bar.‘ ‘You’re just going to let me behind the bar,‘ he smiles a bit confused. ‘I’m off duty. Making you that drink was me being friendly. You gotta get your own stuff now,‘ she teases. He laughs and as the evening gets later, the two get more familiar with each other. But all nights must come to and end and so does this one. Emma lets Chris out the front door and throws him another sweet smile. He starts walking away, but she calls after him. He stops and turns around to find her running after him. She hands him a piece of paper. ‘Just so you know,‘ she smiles shyly, ‘you’re always welcome here. Would be a shame to refuse someone living this closeby.‘ She runs back inside and he watches her. When the door closes he checks the piece of paper he got. It’s a flyer with the opening times of The Dutchess’ Garden, as well as a form to sign up to be a member.

Vechain Price Prediction 2021 - Specialists Take, Bullish Technical Outlook As Well As Collaborations Steering VET Price
Tumblr media
Updated July 4, 2021: Vechain did not see the resolution it had wanted to see after an attack that occurred in March of 2019. Vechain Foundation lost VET tokens worth $6 million. This breach was the result of human error that resulted in the resignation of its CFO. The Foundation released an announcement declaring that they had rectified the error and leaving the final decision about whether or not to burn the stolen tokens to the Vechain community.
Collaboration Between Vechain and Amazon Web Services
VeChain Works With Walmart China To Power A Food Safety Platform VET Price Prediction. TradingView Analysis Updated April 11, 20,21
The price of in terms of price, the VET token is expected to gain enormously from the Chinese government's embrace of blockchain technology. In October, the president of China Xi Jinping said that the application of the blockchain technology was likely to play an important role in the modern technological revolution and industrial transformation.
In this article we will take a look at some expert predictions, technical analysis, and recent events that could have the potential to push the VeChain price higher this year.
Looking for the best place to trade in Vechain's VET token? You can do it using ETH, BTC, or BNB on the Binance exchange.
Experts Discuss Why Vechain Will Rise
It is crucial to be aware of the opinions of crypto experts on what they have to say about the future price of your preferred coin. While their predictions may not be correct however, they can have an impact on the market. Let's look at some of the opinions of experts on VET Price Prediction.
According to Roger Ver, also referred to as "Bitcoin Jesus," and one of the most influential voices in the crypto sector, VeChain has a bright future. The platform's primary mission is to solve real-world problems and offers applications for a variety of industries. Ver admitted that he's passionate about the blockchain's potential to develop an online digital cash system that is permissionless, VeChain also has exciting ways to make use of the blockchain to prevent counterfeit products, and make P2P markets that are permissionless more reliable.
Tim Draper, a Silicon Valley legend, a renowned investor in numerous businesses, and an enthusiastic advocate for digital currencies has joined the VeChain team early last year. The move was welcomed by the VeChain Foundation, who stated that Draper and the platform has the same vision with regard to the future of cryptocurrencies and blockchain solutions.
The price of VET is expected to spike in 2020. If the altcoin market has significant bullish momentum, this could drive the price up to $0.5. We have observed that in 2021 the digital currency was able to hit a peak of $0.23.
Everything will depend on whether the digital currency follows Bitcoin's trend. VET currently stands at 13th place globally and is likely to increase in the near future, if the bullish trend continues.
Vechain Price News
VeChain has increased more than 100% this month, breaking the 200-day exponential mean (EMA) for the first time since summer 2018. In the course of the month it has also been able to break an upward trend that lasted for 14 months. The gains are due to Chinese president Xi Jinping embracing the blockchain technology.
As we've mentioned previously, VET price is currently $0.23 and it has a market value of $14.79 billion.
The price forecast and outlook for the next three to six months will be cautious. However, cryptocurrencies are able to fluctuate rapidly and any price change could happen. For instance, BNB in 2021 saw its price rise from $40 to $500 dollars within two days.
Based on the analysis of various factors, our price forecast for Vechain will range from $0.015 to $0.040.
This is due to the following reasons: the value of THOR tokens (VTHO), its use of transactions on VechainThor. But, there are additional aspects to consider.
If the market enters a new bear trend which is likely to happen, we may witness the coin slipping downwards in the coming months. VeChain has partnered with PWC and Salesforce to offer innovative enterprise-level solutions to clients.

The Impact of Vechain THOR on the VET Price
Many believe that VET token's value will be determined by the amount of THOR it produces. What's the value of THOR? Well, we know that the minimum rate of production is expected to be .00042 the THOR for each VET day, but what is 1 THOR worth?
We're not quite sure yet. Because of low volume, there hasn't been any THOR price changes in the first two month. A lot of people are looking to keep their THOR in the upwards until the volume grows.
It is only available on the LBANK Exchange. This will change once OceanEx's trading platform launches at the end October.
OceanEx will run on VechainThors's blockchain platform. Holders will have the ability to convert or invest VTHO directly into VET and, consequently, increase the VeChain price. This could be one reason for why VET prices could rebound.
THOR demand will rise when Vechain's business partners begin to use the blockchain. When the project "comes into being", everyone will be actively involved.
Most enterprises are currently running test transactions on the test net. But, this is likely to change in the near future. We expect a migration to the main net in the near future. This will enable an rise in smart contracts as well as transactions numbers to be documented prior to the end of the year. Transactions can be tracked via Veforge.
VeChain has numerous alliances with other companies in the market. For example the Norwegian Royals have been a part of the VeChain and DNV GL agreement some months ago. This is a positive indicator for all cryptocurrency markets that are expanding daily.
More transactions are coming, which means more Pressure on the VET Price
The larger the number of transactions and smart contracts on the chain mean more VTHO is burned. These transactions will need VTHO to be burned.
To execute blockchain writing, more VTHO is required to be burned. This will force enterprises to sell more VTHO on the market. This would thus increase the value of VTHO. The company could decide not to take this route. It can purchase VET and create its own THOR. This move should cause an increase in the value of the native coin (VET) and, in turn, increasing the value of holders.
While all of this happens, Vechain is currently in talks with the Chinese government to develop a new carbon ecosystem--this time with multiple players (large enterprises) that could. take part. This would be more than BYD's Carbon Credit application to electric vehicles. Vechain could be the primary blockchain for an entire system of the "tracked" economy within Chinese initiatives.
Collaboration Between Vechain and Amazon Web Services
VeChain announced on February 18th that it has joined forces with Amazon. This partnership will allow the network of the cryptocurrency to expand and boost its value over the next months. One-click connection of the blockchain technology with Amazon Web Services will enable numerous businesses to swiftly and safely implement blockchain applications.
Amazon Web Services logo
VeChain's Blockchain as a Service will integrate the two. It was first launched in the year 2016. This platform offers a variety of solutions, including NFC+RFID chips, IT-related services for enterprises, as well as blockchain encryption.
BaaS allows businesses to build and utilize their own blockchain applications even if they lack technical knowledge. It will be easier for companies to run smart contracts in the cloud.
VeChain's BaaS solution makes use of AWS CloudFormation to enable customers to deploy with just one click. This will help eliminate the cumbersome manual deployment which is associated with the new industry.
The collaboration was met with enthusiasm from the VET community. As of the time of writing, VeChain has gained 16% over the last 24 hours. This momentum is likely to continue over the next couple of months as VeChain is established as the number one blockchain platform.
VeChain and Walmart China Work Together To Develop A Food Safety Platform
Walmart China has recently announced a new VeChain powered food traceability platform. The aim is to provide consumers with the opportunity to obtain more information about the quality of the food they're buying.
Users can scan the QR code of different products sold in China and learn how they came to be made.
Wal-Mart is determined to be a respected retailer by its customers. Wal-Mart has worked tirelessly to enhance food safety, quality management and other areas of its business since its entry into China 23 years ago. Blockchain technology will assist in helping Wal-Mart be a leading company in the field of retrospective management of commodities within the retail industry."
With this new traceability system, it will be possible to trace fresh meat account 50% of the total sales of packaged fresh meat. Similarly, vegetables will comprise 40% of the total sales for packaged vegetables. In addition, traceable seafood is expected to account for 12.5 percent of the total seafood sales by the at the end of 2020.
This is very important for VeChain holders that are trying to figure out how the digital currency is going to behave in the near future. According to VeChain Insider, the recent growth in transactions on VeChainThor blockchain may be linked to Walmart making its live on-chain debut with 23 different products.
Each transaction will require VTHO that is produced by VET. Each day, 37 million VTHO are created. More than 20 million VTHO are burnt every day. The number of transactions could rise as Walmart plans to increase the platform with 100 more products.
It's important to note that this is only one of the VeChain partners. The product is showing positive results in China , and there are other interested parties in improving their solutions using VeChain's blockchain technology.
The VeChain team says there are more than 2 million transactions per day on Walmart China. VeChainThor will be a more extensive network than Ethereum (ETH) as well as Bitcoin (BTC).
There are many other companies across the globe that are already using blockchain technology in order to track the different products sold at the grocery store. This could allow customers to access more information about the items they purchased at different shops across various countries.
A cryptocurrency-related network must be backed by solid foundations. It is essential that crypto and blockchain projects remain active during periods of low market growth or bear markets. They must continue to improve the solutions they provide to people. VeChain is growing on the market. Since August 1st the number of accounts having more than one VET has increased by more than 4 percent.
Companies will need to embrace VeChainThor to enhance their services and products. This is going to help to increase the use of VeChain and also to increase the value of the VET digital asset. In the long run, for the benefit of this digital asset more agreements and partnerships will be very positive.
The analyst has shared important information about the present state of the market for cryptocurrency and VeChain (VET). He reveals that there has been a sharp shift in the investor's sentiment as well as achievement of the continued an overall decline in price. The recent rise of trading volumes within the region between 0.66 USDT and 0.75 USDT indicates that there has been an upward trend around the prices.
He is of the opinion that VET may move higher by near 0.116 USDT or 0,12 USDT. Then, he analyzes the VETBTC chart and shows that there were sellers who attempted to get some ground beneath the area of 0.000002 and 0.00000236.
The trading pair VET/USDT shows that the digital currency follows the pattern of the largest virtual currencies that are available. This is evident in how the cryptocurrency experienced an upward trend that culminated at a top of 0.28 USDT per coin, and then it was followed by a "brutal" market correction.
It is possible to also see price trading between resistance and support areas shown in the chart. If prices rise above the resistance area it could be a reversal.
Let's keep going with VeChain (VET), with the analyst who believes this weekend will be "big" in terms of virtual currency. According to him that there's a important resistance that needs to be broken. The first one is very close to $0.14. This is very significant for the virtual currency since it indicates that it is in a position to move higher.
Instead, if the digital asset goes down, we might have it reach a value per coin of $0.10 in the worst-case scenario. This could be good for those that want to enter the market at cheaper prices. VeChain is the only cryptocurrency currently on the market that addresses the supply chain, data as well as logistical issues.
The VET Price Prediction is definitely affected by the recent FUD that has expanded in the crypto market. It had a major impact on the users across the world who were investing in this fast-growing digital currency.
The analyst provides a four-hour analysis of VeChain. He clarifies how the cryptocurrency moved into support structures that were before bouncing around on local views. In addition, VET has developed the down-sloping channel that is also coherent with the wave count as a part of an A B C formation.
It would definitely be necessary to know how VET moves closer to the lower support zones and how the coin manages to move away from them and bounce from these levels in the near future.
In the case of the USDT/VET trading pair The analyst believes that there seems to be a bullish sign of a break out from the triangle structure which is displayed in the charts. The analyst indicated on the chart that he believes there could be a breakout at these levels.

BlockTalks x Nifty Planet AMA Transcript!
Tumblr media
We recently hosted an AMA with Nifty Planet, on June 26th at 1 PM UTC. Many of you might have participated or many of not. But we make sure no one missed out from the knowledge shared by Toku Mei, CCO of Nifty Planet. So here we are up with the AMA transcript, for those who missed the live session, this blog post will be a saver & feeder of knowledge for them.
Introduction Questions Asked By Team BlockTalks!
Q1. Could you please introduce Nifty Planet to our community in layman’s term?
Ans — Yes. NiftyPlanet is a web.3.0 platform that built based on Ethereum blockchain. From the start it is place where users can buy NFTs from the famous people and original NiftyPlanet NFTs. In the future, our platform will be fully decentralized and be managed by a Foundation.
Tumblr media
Q2. What are the advantages of Nifty Planet to other alternatives in the Blockchain field?
Ans — I would say that there are many differences between the NiftyPlanet and other NFT markets but 2 of them are the biggest to us. First of all we are preparing for any drop together with creators in advance. Including pricing, special mechanics, advertisement. That is why all NFTs have bigger values for the holders than NFTs from rest of the markets. Any creator have to pass Due Diligence process. But at the same time we are web.3.0 system it means that all the assets are under the user’s control.
Second biggest difference is that we plan to attract not just artists of creative people we plan to adopt NFT technology for many different industries and help to join crypto spase different companies and independent people. And our customization can help to make it easier for them and increase the value for their products (NFTs) for everybody.
Q3. What are the major milestones Nifty Planet achieved so far & what are in the future pipeline?
Ans — First of all, we created an Ambassador program and have already gained three Ambassadors to work with us. We have also started our first drop and already sold the majority of those NFT’s. Additionally, we have already built a solid team of more than 10 international team members. And we have our own system that was created by our own engineers based on proven smart contract technology. We have already contracted with a few famous artists to launch NFT drops on our platform starting next month, and we are also in negotiations with at least 10 more international creators.
We plan to be leaders in offering hybrid NFT’s by merging physical and digital offerings on our platform. We already have many offers from international creators and businesses that wish to use our platform to sell physical items as NFTs. Additionally, we will also offer what we call, “Functional NFT’s” which will provide the ability to offer an unlimited number of possible services and knowledge-sharing that will not only open up new channels of commerce and financial opportunity, but will also connect people that would never have been able to connect directly before.
Questions Asked on Twitter For Nifty Planet Team!
Q1. At this moment, which one the most Necessary for your project: 1. Investors 2. Community 3. Market/Exchange and why?
Ans — At the moment, for us, Community is the most important of these three. Of course, we welcome more investors ;) but Since we have the technology, a plan, and a growing list of creators excited to create unique and useful NFT’s together with us, what we need next is more people to share it all with, and to benefit with us as we create opportunities for everyone that gets involved with us. We hope in turn that our community will share their ideas about how we can grow and create more opportunities from the NiftyPlanet platform, and together we can bring more and more people around the world to join this incredible world of blockchain and decentralization, which is a big goal for us.
Q2. What other partnerships are you looking for and what is the focus of these partnerships?
Ans — Well, we really want to push the limits of NFT’s and so we are and will be actively seeking new partnerships with individuals and businesses that have great new ideas of ways to use NFT technology for Art, for business, for communication, for socializing and more. We don’t claim to know it all and we all know that there is power in numbers, and so we are open to the ideas, brains and creativity of all of those in our community and hope they openly share and offer their ideas with us. Think "functional NFT’s" and the potential is limitless.
Q3. Telling about real world adoption. Most of the user are still not aware about Blockchainchain and Blockchainchain related products. So, how Your project can raise awareness about their project with non-crypto users too?
Ans — You are exactly right. For the first time in maybe thousands of years, we "common" people have a chance to take back our freedoms from the "Mis-Leaders" and Elite classes, and create wealth without worry of being extorted by overreaching governments. So this is one of our big goals. We want to help more and more people become involved in blockchain and cryptocurrency and understand its implications and usefulness. By selecting our initial creators carefully by hand, we can select artists and creators and influencers that also are in line with our goals to wake more people up to the freedom, opportunities and benefits of blockchain, and are willing to reach out to their vast numbers of fans, most of whom are not aware of blockchain, and invite them to become involved in it by learning and talking about and buying and selling the NFT’s created by those artists and influencers. And we as a platform will do everything we can to onboard those new members by providing a friendly and easy to use platform.
Q4. You plan to have an IDO (Initial Dex Offering) in Japan, China and Internationally. So,why did you focus first in Japan and China? Aside from this countries, which other country you plan to have an IDO? Can you share some details about your plan IDO of PlanetNifty?
Ans — The main reason is that we are big fans of Asia and have spent a lot of time in Asia living and working and playing. Thus we have a lot of friends and strategic partners that can, and want to help us grow both our business and our community organically and confidently. We love and know Asia well and are very comfortable working and creating in its markets. We also are lucky enough to have direct connections and relations with a large number of really wonderfully genius artists and creators whose work and ideas we want to share with the rest of the world. This why we focused on the Asian market to start business and our IDO’s as well. We will share more details about IDO very soon so please watch our Telegram group.
Q5. If I like Nifties but I am not a creator or artist, how can I be part of this project? Is it exclusive for those with creative skills, or is there an inductive one for beginners?
Ans — Thats a good question. To be honest, in order to build a strong business and community we are focused on well known artists from the start. But we do have plans to open up to more and more up-and-coming artists and creators over time, especially those that propose new and unique uses for NFT’s, and ways to use NFT’s create more interest and opportunities for our community. But even before that, we want to encourage people that want to start learning how to create NFT’s, so we plan to provide a way to access our NFT engine to create your own NFT’s for practice, or for fun, or to try and sell in any of the marketplaces that accepts brand new artists. We will also introduce our partner NFT markets where you can join right away.
Questions Asked by our BlockTalks Community Members during live Session to Nifty Planet Team!!
Q1. It is easy to claim that your project as well as the product is good, however it takes so much effort to prove. What are the qualities and security that Nifty Planet is worth investing for especially that you’re new and is anonymous, how will we able to assure the stability of the project and how will you stay up to date on the latest tokens and coins that the market has to offer?
Ans — Well to be honest, we here at NiftyPlanet have been around the crypto space for a while and we have seen a LOT of crap and scams, and we have also been left high dry by fake or undedicated project teams. One of the reasons we started this project, is not only because the idea of NFT’s is really awesome, but because we want to give back to all the people that were let down in the past, by creating a project that people could get excited about, become deeply involved in, that we could directly interact with and share ideas with, and build something that is not only fun and useful but creates financial opportunity for everyone involved so we can all become more free and happy.
Q2. How can I trust your project? If you can give any proper information about it, I would like to invest in your project.
Ans — Well, although we are keeping our identities quiet for now, we have gone to great lengths to be as forthcoming and transparent as possible. We have even published our and our investors wallet addresses and of course our contract address right in our literature (website and our medium blog), we intend to be as transparent, honest as possible and always, think of our community first.
Q3. Do you have any plans for ambassador programme role for your project growth and awareness? If yes how may I apply?
Ans — Absolutely! Please contact us through our Telegram group or through our website if you believe you can offer solid support that will enhance our growth.
Q4. Is your project a local or global project? How many communites, do you have for non-english users?
Ans — We are definitely global > our team is international, our creators are international, and our investors and users are international. At the moment, we already have English, Russian and Chinese communities. and we will keep adding more and more.
Q5. How will NiftyPlanet bring the digital and physical world together through blockchain technology? What strategies have you developed to achieve this goal?
Ans — We have a LOT of companies and individuals with really cool and useful digital and non-digital things that they want to make into NFT’s. we are working face to face daily with these people to brainstorm new ways to combine and connect real and digital and we have some very interesting cases in the works already.
Q6. How can we invest in the project? Do we have a minimum requirement to be eligible?
Ans — We welcome large investors and have various options to partner with us and we communicate directly about such details. We will be holding Both ICO and IDOs. Please watch our channels closely for more details about these to participate as an individual investor. And of course, please visit our platform and hopefully buy some of our original and creator-based NFT’s.
Q7. How big is your team ? Are you a public team or not? Please tell us more about team background?
Ans — We are more than 10 i think now. Collectively, we are a team of Crypto pioneers with experience in many different areas.
Between us, we have many years of experience with IT startups, blockchain technology, ICO’s, traditional Art & Music, marketing, fundraising, digital Art and Music production, show business, community development and social media.
Q8. Staking is one of the strategies to attract users and hold them long term. Does your great project have plan about Staking?
Ans — Yup we will have several ways for hodlers to earn with their tokens.
What is the main aim for the NiftyPlanet project?
NiftyPlanet is an NFT marketplace and minting platform that utilizes the NFPL token to empower users who actively interact with the platform.
Users on the NiftyPlanet platform can buy and sell NFT’s (non-fungible tokens) created for rare and unique digital items such as music, artwork, trading cards, experience-sharing, hybrid digital/physical, and in the near future, even physical items.
NiftyPlanet’s plans extend far beyond being just another marketplace for digital collectibles and art. We intend to bridge the digital and physical world via blockchain technology to make it possible for collectibles and creations borne from both worlds to be shared with the world in the same exciting place.
We also want to give an international voice to creators that have never ventured past their own “neighborhoods” by connecting creators with an exploding International Crypto community.
Finally, we plan to provide a place where creators can monetize their creativity and even make a living from it, something especially needed in the wake of the globalist-created plannedemic, inhuman lockdowns and global financial destruction of 2020–2021. NiftyPlanet also wants to give back to all of its users and will offer rewards for active participation on the platform (creating and selling, collecting, voting and moderating, etc.). NiftyPlanet plans to provide the opportunity for farming to earn, as well.
The NiftyPlanet protocol is a solution to the limitations faced by the intellectual property market, including licensing and paperwork challenges, piracy issues and right-protection, limited or subdued revenue, and more. The advent of NFT’s represents an awesome alternative to everyone.
Why is the NiftyPlanet project team remaining anonymous?
We believe that new era of privacy and also private money is here. The world is changing very fast and people want to have a new approach in their relationship with the world at large, including the economy and government. It is clear, especially after the tyranny that has arisen from the insane and and irrational response to the “pandemic” that the NWO and its buddies in the new Pharmaceutical Industrial Complex, are currently trying to take over the world, and or kill us all. We feel that it is essential that we all begin guarding and protecting our privacy and rights before everything we own and love is gone or usurped by the “powers that shouldn’t be” either via their surveillance, assisted by other NWO buddies such as the tech giants we all know and love. Our own efforts start with this project. Those megalomaniacs aren’t welcome to participate in our community nor do we want anything to do with them thus we choose to remain anonymous.
We also feel there is too much pressure on companies and individuals to pay exorbitantly high taxes. And besides the obvious fact that taxes are too high, governments have shown perpetually that they are completely irresponsible in how they use taxes they collect from hard working citizens the world round; wasting and misusing funds for personal ends such as visiting prostitute establishments, rebuilding the same road many multiple times just so they can receive the same budget as the previous year, and last but not least to start wars, spending billions worldwide to create weapons of destruction to kill people in foreign countries that the taxpayers have no desire to have conflict with at all in the first place. But saying all this does not mean that we are against the taxes completely. In fact, we will gladly support the payment of taxes when they will be used for the people that bust their asses to pay them, and not to benefit the psychopaths who are currently in control of the spending of the taxes they collect from all of us. Taxes should migrated to a cryptocurrency basis and the method of payment should be changed from advanced payment — where you pay VAT, consumption taxes or taxes from your income from trading, to the “payment for the results”. In business area it’s called “Pay for Performance Principle”. In this payment for results scenario, for example, if you were happy with how the roads look around us that were built by your government, you would go to the DeFi Tax platform and pay directly to the company who built those roads. The same with your local Police force or any other kind of service that are currently funded by the thousands of types of taxes collected around the world. This way of paying taxes after you see the results or actual use of those taxes will motivate governments to transform and become more effective, efficient and responsible, and it will improve the world and environment around us. In our opinion, VAT that we are all paying in shops is absolutely enough for the government to survive. The rest of the Taxes we will pay in the future, once governments recognize and respect that The Era of Private money is here and we will no longer forgive their irresponsible use of our hard-earned income.
Cryptocurrency gives us our power to control our governments once more, the way they should be. Until the governments can prove they can be responsible and will not misuse or simply steal taxed money from the people we have no reason to hand any over to them. Another important reason for remaining anonymous, is routine paperwork and other extra costs. Once we register any kind of a earth-based company we need to hire a lawyer open a physical office, get and send correspondence in perpetuity. And all these things decrease our efficiency and effectiveness. In our initial stage we can not allow ourselves to waste such important resources as a time. The structure of NFPL token distribution
The NiftyPlanet platform is a semi self-funded platform. Half of the funds for the development and platform launch were provided by a few pre-seed investors.
Total token supply is 1 billion tokens.
There are 10 pre-seed investors of this project. In total they control 83M tokens. Additionally, they own 29% interest in the project.
2 main Founders control 8% of all token supply (80M tokens).

Tokens have been distributed to 2 founders, 2 team members and 10 pre-seed investors.
Before we hold our IDO which is planned for June 2021, founders’ and pre-seed investors’ tokens will not move at all. The main reason we are doing this is because we believe that people who participate in IDO’s should have a guarantee that the team and investors will not sell all of their tokens all at once before the IDO starts.
In the graphic you can see the entity structure of token allocation with exact ETH addresses. Until the end of the actual IDO, there will be no NFPL transactions originating from project or investor wallets.

Tumblr media
We would better off investing this time to improve your user experience on our platform and make your life easier and more interesting, and to provide more creative and financial opportunities for our users.

Now that you know more about the car color issue and how to get the best car insurance, take a look at our articles where we discussed how insurance companies take all these factors into consideration and how to get cheap coverage. Now, where are the other ratings from insurance companies to consider when looking for cheap car insurance? For the average driver, getting an initial quote is the best way to get an accurate estimate of how much money drivers will pay for car insurance. The first thing is to find what kind of car insurance options are available. There are many options on the.
Can You Get Insurance On a Car With a Salvage Title?
Can You Get Insurance On a Car With a Salvage Title? Yes. Your insurance company can issue a judgment of damages, or may have some sort of limit on payout, depending on the law in your state. In general, states with salvage laws require the owner of a salvage title to be at least 50% responsible for payment of all insured costs and associated losses. In order for the owner of a salvage title to collect and pay any legal and legal costs associated with the removal of a title, you must comply with the law. If you do not have insurance, you may be subject to legal fees, a fine, suspension of your license, or both. When is a salvage title to insurance? The process is similar to that of a title: your insurance provider may issue a judgment of damages, which means you must pay the fees associated with the salvage title, plus whatever court costs you may be entitled to recover (including court costs and court costs for recovery of damages related to damage to the title and/or restoration of the title). After you have received.
Can I get full coverage insurance on a rebuilt title car?
Can I get full coverage insurance on a rebuilt title car? Yes, but this depends on whether a title car is owned and under contract with someone else. That’s usually impossible, depending on the type of car with the title but not owned by the owner. No, title cars are not considered “renter” property. They only have to be registered with the insurer and maintained for up to nine years. Once that claim is filed, the insurance company reviews the status and changes of the car’s status within two months. That process takes the car as long as two months or until the car is registered. It should also state whether the insurance company keeps the title, regardless of how long it takes. It always costs more to get full coverage for a rebuilt car since you will pay more than you would to get liability-only insurance. I will be paying $150/day for my car that gets totaled but gets totaled twice? I like to have the title at home to stay with the title, no more has to go.
Can I insure a rebuilt title car?
Can I insure a rebuilt title car? If you get a car that you didn’t actually own, you probably won’t be able to get insurance based on its restoration value, and you’ll probably even have to sell it. That’s because a car that’s not worth the investment to you isn’t worth the price, it’s insurance. So if you’re thinking “yes” to this new purchase of a car, do you really have to insure it? The answer is yes, you can do this. You can even transfer ownership if it’s only owned by you for the rest of its life, but for many cars we’ve mentioned it’s probably not worth the trouble. Even if this is the case, it might be worth looking into a policy to cover your car if it’s not worth the price. And there are always options, just like for newer cars, that might be worth considering. So.
What Insurance Companies Cover Salvage Titles?
What Insurance Companies Cover Salvage Titles? No No No No » MORE If you’ve been in a car accident with another driver who was injured, have another injuries, or just have another car in the garage, these costs will not be covered by your car insurance. and will they still be able to pay you for the damages and to see how they would compare to the other driver. All states require uninsured motorist coverage in Illinois. (UM) requires this type of insurance. Illinois motorists must have an open auto liability claim form, an forms- and motorist license if they want to pursue the money for their medical costs. Illinois auto insurance providers can “stand behind” their coverage by providing the insurance type at the time of the claim. This type of insurance often pays the medical costs incurred by motorists who have had a , a medical payment.

Is a rebuilt title bad for insurance?
Is a rebuilt title bad for insurance? Here’s why…. No. An auto dealership is not a licensed company nor is it required to insure your vehicle at all. An auto dealership is simply a pawn shop — that is licensed at the dealership, selling you car insurance policies. If you sell your mechanic car through a private broker or a direct auto insurance policy agent, he/she will own the car, sell you the policy, and make payments to the dealership. If the car is not part of the seller’s hands-off plan, you can buy it for a little under $20 per month. Many shops are willing to cover the mechanic car for a small premium. However, they are going to charge a set amount for their car for the mechanic insurance coverage. Some shops will charge a little extra to insure more. An auto dealer will only be able to insure mechanic cars under certain circumstances. A car insurance company may not be the dealer’s responsibility, but an Auto A Dealer (aka.) can..
Can I buy car insurance without a license?
Can I buy car insurance without a license? Or can I get car insurance if I have a learner’s permit? Yes, you can get car insurance without a license on a limited basis. In addition to being covered under the learner’s permit driver, a minimum of insurance will also serve as a bridge between fully licensed adults and the licensed or resident parent. The key to a reasonable premium against an uninsured driver, however, is in the amount of driving history that a learner’s permit driver is given. Many factors determine the vehicle’s value and value of its value. As with older vehicles, car insurance premiums generally start at approximately $30 each year and may increase with age. The cheapest car insurance companies for beginners are found in the states of Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, and North Carolina. For example, we looked at price, customer service, and pricing to determine which companies have the best deal for new drivers. Car insurance premiums tend to be even more expensive for experienced drivers than for.

You want to have the cheapest car insurance you can afford. But I m still wondering if you can get cheap insurance with lower minimums that offer good coverage for less than 1.8% of the annual car insurance? If you have multiple policies (bodily injury, etc) or other different types of insurance the car insurance rates can vary on your behalf, or even change completely based on state laws or insurance providers. But it s nice to know there is a good deal you can get affordable insurance online. Which car insurance companies are generally willing to work with you and help you build your policy? This is a little tricky to say - but it s something to keep in mind if you plan on driving in.

Licensing of the Monsters: How Pokémon Ignited An Anime Arms Race
"Hey, what do ya' got there? A rabbit?" Batman asks his mentor, staring at a video of Pikachu on a massive underground computer screen.
"It's a Pokémon," Bruce Wayne replies.
Five seconds later, Batman is shocked so hard by the tiny yellow creature that he ends up flying headfirst through another computer monitor (Using a clip from the "Blackout" episode of Batman Beyond, an episode that would've aired for the first time just days earlier.) It doesn't make much physical sense, but this bizarre 1999 crossover promo did establish two things: 1) Pokémon was coming to Kids' WB, and 2) Pokémon was important. So important that Batman actually took time away from obsessing over crime and vengeance to care about it.
Echoing a 1997 promo where the comedic Bugs Bunny let us in on the "secret" that the serious, dark Batman was coming to Kids' WB, it almost seems like a passing of the torch. Kids' WB, up until then, was a programming service chock full of classic Warner Bros. cartoon properties like Bugs, Daffy, Pinky, Brain, and various members of the Justice League — all animated Americana.
Pokémon wasn't a huge risk as the 4Kids Entertainment dub of the show had done well in broadcast syndication, they had plenty of episodes to work with (sometimes airing three in a row), and it was based on a game series that was already a worldwide smash hit.
But the show was ... different.
And it would end up changing cartoons as we knew them.
  Part 1: Batman Jumps Ship
It's hard to think of a better scenario when it comes to appealing to kids than the one Fox Kids had with Batman: The Animated Series. Debuting in September 1992 and airing on weekdays just after school let out, it received immediate acclaim due to its moody, beautiful animation and storytelling that didn't talk down to anyone. Little kids could get into Batman throwing crooks around and adults could marvel at plots like the one where a former child actress with a medical condition that keeps her from aging takes her former co-stars hostage and ends up holding a gun, hallucinating, and sobbing into Batman's arms.
It did so well that Fox tried to air it on prime-time Sundays and though this was short-lived — turns out, Batman was no match for Ed Bradley on CBS's 60 Minutes — it solidified the show as "cool." This was a show that could hang with the big boys. You couldn't say the same of something like Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends.
And then, in 1997, it was gone. A five-year contract ran out and Batman leapt completely to Kids' WB, where a continuation of the show (the often even grimmer The New Batman Adventures) aired later that year. There, it joined Superman: The Animated Series in a one-two punch of programming called The New Batman/Superman Adventures. When it came to Kids' WB, competitors not only had to deal with the Merry Melodies crowd, they now had to face the World's Finest Heroes.
This, along with a departing Animaniacs, left Fox Kids with a gap in flagship programming. Sure it had various incarnations of the Power Rangers (which was still holding strong) and Spider-Man, but if you look back on 1998 programming, little of it would survive the year. Silver Surfer? Gone by May. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation? Out by December. Casper? Dead in October. By May of 1999, Warner Media would announce record ratings thanks to Pokémon, while its competitors, including the Disney-led ABC, Fox, and even Nickelodeon, would suffer losses in the Saturday morning area. Pokemon would have the best ever series premiere numbers for Kids' WB at the time.
A chunk of that has to do with 4Kids Entertainment's (or to be more specific, 4Kids Productions) handling of the show. Again, Pokémon was a proven concept. If you love monsters, adventure, and collecting things, you'll probably find something to enjoy in the franchise. But the dub was particularly strong. For years, dubbing was seen as an inherently laughable thing in America, full of exasperated voice actors trying desperately to convince you that they weren't portraying three different characters, and lips that didn't match the dialogue. Entire Japanese series were reduced to laughing stocks in the U.S. because why focus on the lovingly created miniatures and top-notch tokusatsu action in Godzilla if one of the actors sounds weird?
But while Pokémon wasn't the first great dub, it was a remarkably underrated one. Veronica Taylor's work as Ash Ketchum was relatable, funny, and consistent. And Racheal Lillis, Eric Stuart, and Maddie Blaustein's turns as Team Rocket's Jessie, James, and Meowth gave us villains that could've easily been the most repetitive parts of the show  — you can only try to capture Pikachu so many times before you should logically find a second hobby — but instead were one of the most entertaining aspects.
Aside from some easily meme-able bits — Brock's drying pan and jelly donuts, for example — Pokemon became a seamless addition to the Kids' WB lineup and would end up giving many fans a lifelong love of anime. And it was great for 4Kids, too, as in 2000, they would be number one on Fortune's 100 Fastest-Growing Companies.
Fox Kids wanted an answer to this. And it would soon find one.
  Well, two.
  Part 2: Monsters Rule
Saban Entertainment was no stranger to Fox Kids. They'd been the one to adapt Toei's Super Sentai into The Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers for American and international audiences, creating an unexpected sensation that combined monsters and martial arts. And in 1999, they nabbed Digimon Adventure, a series about kids that gain "digital" monster partners when transported to a "digital world," which had begun airing earlier that year in Japan. Based on a fighting virtual pet that had already been around for a few years, Digimon was a natural fit for an anime series and also a natural fit for a climate that was desperately trying to find the next Pokémon.
Renamed Digimon: Digital Monsters, it premiered in August of 1999. Of course, accusations followed that it was a Pokémon rip-off, considering that they were both about befriending terrifying laser critters, but they offered fairly different things. While Pokémon was more episodic, Digimon gave viewers a more Dragon Ball Z-esque experience (they were both Toei productions, too) with the titular monsters evolving and gaining "power-ups" due to fighting increasingly powerful villains.
Almost two months later, Monster Rancher would join the Fox Kids lineup, airing on Saturdays at 8:30 AM after Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century (a Fox Kids lost relic if there ever was one). Together, Monster Rancher and Digimon would cover the programming block with monster action, sometimes airing twice each. Meanwhile, Pokémon would do the same for Kids' WB, and if you look at their Saturday morning schedules from 1999 and 2000, it appears they just shoved Pikachu in whenever possible.
Looking back on Monster Rancher is always odd, though, because it's so specifically trapped in the time period where it originated. The video games used metadata from readable discs to create new monsters for the player, meaning that as soon as people gained the ability to download or stream media online without having to travel to their local Circuit City, the game would look absolutely archaic in comparison to its peers.
Monster Rancher is a very fun show based on some very fun games, and the dynamic array of personalities and their particular squabbles in the core group actually reminds me a lot of One Piece. But even the show itself deals with reviving monsters on giant stone discs — a prehistoric-looking adaptation of a video game gimmick that would, a decade later, appear prehistoric itself.
The Monster War was waged across 2000 and 2001. And though it appears Pokémon was the clear winner — in 2020, it's the most popular franchise with the widest reach, even if Digimon does produce some stellar shows and movies — the ratings tell a different story. In the May sweeps of 2000, Pokémon (and Kids' WB) took the prize among kids 6-11, but in the end, Fox Kids would score a victory of a 3.1 rating to Kids' WB's 3.0 (the first sweeps win since 1997, the year that Batman left.)
Early the following year, Fox Kids would score again, narrowly beating Pokémon on Saturday morning in the same timeslot and even coming ahead of properties like X-Men. And what would propel this February 10th victory? The first appearance of BlackWarGreymon, the Shadow the Hedgehog to WarGreymon's Sonic.
However, Pokémon would still help create ratings records for Kids' WB, even though late 2000/early 2001 saw a slide that would often cede dominance to Nickelodeon. Jed Patrick, who was president of The WB at the time said: "I didn't think Pokémon would fall off as much as it did ... every fire cools down a little, but that doesn't mean it doesn't stay hot."
Even though, in retrospect, claims that "Pokemania" had died seem a little ridiculous — the latest games, Pokémon Sword and Shield, just became the highest-selling entries in seventeen years — big changes were ahead.
Part 3: It's Time To Duel ... Or Not
In early 2001, Joel Andryc, executive VP of kids' programming and development for Fox Kids, was looking for a "Digimon companion series to create an hour-long anime block." He felt they were too reliant on Digimon, as they were airing it three times in a single morning. Likely not coincidentally, that summer Fox Kids Fridays were dubbed "anime invasion," advertising Flint The Time Detective, Dinozaurs, Escaflowne, and Digimon. In one commercial, a single quote zips across the bottom of the screen: "Anime Rocks!" Nicole, TX
That it does, Nicole from Texas.
Meanwhile, 4Kids Entertainment would provide Kids' WB with another monster show: Yu-Gi-Oh! Known as Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters in Japan, this anime adaptation absconded from retelling the stories found in the early chapters of the manga — which were mostly devoted to Yugi running into jerks, only to have his Egyptian spirit "alter ego" deal karmic retribution on them — and instead focused on the parts that involved the cool monster fights. So basically the parts that were the most like Pokémon.
But how would this be received? In 2000, Canadian studio Nelvana had licensed the anime Cardcaptor Sakura and turned it simply into Cardcaptors — an extremely edited version that removed many important relationships and plotlines and tried to streamline the show into a pseudo-Pokémon story. It's gone down in history as one of the most questionable dubs ever, and never really made a splash on Kids' WB. So they wouldn't want a repeat of that.
But would kids be into a card game? The cards did summon monsters, but in Pokémon and Digimon, the monsters are just there, moving around and not relegated to a glorified checkers board arena. It turned out, yes, kids would be REALLY into that. Yu-Gi-Oh! debuted at number one in multiple demographics in September 2001, and would remain a steady part of its lineup for years to come.
And how did Fox Kids respond? Did the "anime invasion" work out? Well, sort of, but not in the way they were hoping.
In 2001, due to diminishing ratings and audiences, Fox Kids Worldwide (along with Fox Family Worldwide) were sold to The Walt Disney Company. By November 7th, they'd canceled their weekly afternoon blocks, and the next year, they'd end up selling their entire Saturday morning block to a company that had provided their rivals with the very same TV shows that aided in sinking them: 4Kids Entertainment. The final show to premiere on the original Fox Kids was Galidor: Defenders of the Outer Dimension, a live action series that stood beside Alienators: Evolution Continues (a cartoon sequel to the mediocre 2001 comedy Evolution) and the underrated Medabots as the block's last gasp.
Renamed FoxBox in late 2002 (and later 4KidsTV in 2005), the 4Kids run schedule would, over the years, include anime like Kirby! Right Back At Ya!, Ultimate Muscle, Fighting Foodons, Sonic X, Shaman King, and eventually, in 2004, the infamous One Piece dub. The first Saturday of the new FoxBox lineup would also outdo the previous Saturday's Fox Kids lineup. Disney would acquire the rights to Digimon and it showed up on ABC Family in late 2001 (eighteen years later, a reboot of the original series would air, which can be watched on Crunchyroll).
Eventually, in 2007, the Monster War would come full circle. 4Kids Entertainment announced they would be taking over the Kids' WB Saturday morning block entirely, renaming it the "CW4KIDS," as The CW had been born after UPN and The WB had ceased to be. Pokémon was long gone by this point, having been dropped by Kids' WB in 2006, and was now overseen by The Pokémon Company International on Cartoon Network.
"We wish Pokémon USA much success going forward," the CEO of 4Kids Entertainment said. Later sued over "illegal agreements" regarding the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise, the company would eventually file for bankruptcy in 2016. Pokémon Journeys, the latest installment in the franchise, launches on Netflix on June 12th.

Mint: late-stage adversarial interoperability demonstrates what we had (and what we lost)
Tumblr media
In 2006, Aaron Patzer founded Mint. Patzer had grown up in the city of Evansville, Indiana—a place he described as "small, without much economic opportunity"—but had created a successful business building websites. He kept up the business through college and grad school and invested his profits in stocks and other assets, leading to a minor obsession with personal finance that saw him devoting hours every Saturday morning to manually tracking every penny he'd spent that week, transcribing his receipts into Microsoft Money and Quicken.
Patzer was frustrated with the amount of manual work it took to track his finances with these tools, which at the time weren't smart enough to automatically categorize "Chevron" under fuel or "Safeway" under groceries. So he conceived on an ingenious hack: he wrote a program that would automatically look up every business name he entered into the online version of the Yellow Pages—constraining the search using the area code in the business's phone number so it would only consider local merchants—and use the Yellow Pages' own categories to populate the "category" field in his financial tracking tools.
It occurred to Patzer that he could do even better, which is where Mint came in. Patzer's idea was to create a service that would take all your logins and passwords for all your bank, credit union, credit card, and brokerage accounts, and use these logins and passwords to automatically scrape your financial records, and categorize them to help you manage your personal finances. Mint would also analyze your spending in order to recommend credit cards whose benefits were best tailored to your usage, saving you money and earning the company commissions.
By international standards, the USA has a lot of banks: around 12,000 when Mint was getting started (in the US, each state gets to charter its own banks, leading to an incredible, diverse proliferation of financial institutions). That meant that for Mint to work, it would have to configure its scrapers to work with thousands of different websites, each of which was subject to change without notice.
If the banks had been willing to offer an API, Mint's job would have been simpler. But despite a standard format for financial data interchange called OFX (Open Financial Exchange), few financial institutions were offering any way for their customers to extract their own financial data. The banks believed that locking in their users' data could work to their benefit, as the value of having all your financial info in one place meant that once a bank locked in a customer for savings and checking, it could sell them credit cards and brokerage services. This was exactly the theory that powered Mint, with the difference that Mint wanted to bring your data together from any financial institution, so you could shop around for the best deals on cards, banking, and brokerage, and still merge and manage all your data.
At first, Mint contracted with Yodlee, a company that specialized in scraping websites of all kinds, combining multiple webmail accounts with data scraped from news sites and other services in a single unified inbox. When Mint outgrew Yodlee's services, it founded a rival called Untangly, locking a separate team in a separate facility that never communicated with Mint directly, in order to head off any claims that Untangly had misappropriated Yodlee's proprietary information and techniques—just as Phoenix computing had created a separate team to re-implement the IBM PC ROMs, creating an industry of "PC clones."
Untangly created a browser plugin that Mint's most dedicated users would use when they logged into their banks. The plugin would prompt them to identify elements of each page in the bank's websites so that the scraper for that site could figure out how to parse the bank's site and extract other users' data on their behalf.
To head off the banks' countermeasures, Untangly maintained a bank of cable-modems and servers running "headless" versions of Internet Explorer (a headless browser is one that runs only in computer memory, without drawing the actual browser window onscreen) and they throttled the rate at which the scripted interactions on these browsers ran, in order to make it harder for the banks to determine which of its users were Mint scrapers acting on behalf of its customers and which ones were the flesh-and-blood customers running their own browsers on their own behalf.
As the above implies, not every bank was happy that Mint was allowing its customers to liberate their data, not least because the banks' winner-take-all plan was for their walled gardens to serve as reasons for customers to use their banks for everything, in order to get the convenience of having all their financial data in one place.
Some banks sent Mint legal threats, demanding that they cease-and-desist from scraping customer data. When this happened, Mint would roll out its "nuclear option"—an error message displayed to every bank customer affected by these demands informing them that their bank was the reason they could no longer access their own financial data. These error messages would also include contact details for the relevant decision-makers and customer-service reps at the banks. Even the most belligerent bank's resolve weakened in the face of calls from furious customers who wanted to use Mint to manage their own data.
In 2009, Mint became a division of Intuit, which already had a competing product with a much larger team. With the merged teams, they were able to tackle the difficult task of writing custom scrapers for the thousands of small banks they'd been forced to sideline for want of resources.
Adversarial interoperability is the technical term for a tool or service that works with ("interoperates" with) an existing tool or service—without permission from the existing tool's maker (that's the "adversarial" part).
Mint's story is a powerful example of adversarial interoperability: rather than waiting for the banks to adopt standards for data-interchange—a potentially long wait, given the banks' commitment to forcing their customers into treating them as one-stop-shops for credit cards, savings, checking, and brokerage accounts—Mint simply created the tools to take its users' data out of the bank's vaults and put it vaults of the users' choosing.
Adversarial interoperability was once commonplace. It's a powerful way for new upstarts to unseat the dominant companies in a market—rather than trying to convince customers to give up an existing service they rely on, an adversarial interoperator can make a tool that lets users continue to lean on the existing services, even as they chart a path to independence from those services.
But stories like Mint are rare today, thanks to a sustained, successful campaign by the companies that owe their own existence to adversarial interoperability to shut it down, lest someone do unto them as they had done unto the others.
Thanks to decades of lobbying and lawsuits, we've seen a steady expansion of copyright rules, software patents (though these are thankfully in retreat today), enforceable terms-of-service and theories about "interference with contract" and "tortious interference."
These have grown to such an imposing degree that big companies don't necessarily need to send out legal threats or launch lawsuits anymore—the graveyard of new companies killed by these threats and suits is scary enough that neither investors nor founders have much appetite for risking it.
For Mint to have launched when it did, and done as well as it did, tells us that adversarial interoperability may be down, but it's not out. With the right legal assurances, there are plenty of entrepreneurs and investors who'd happily provide users with the high-tech ladders they need to scale the walled gardens that Big Tech has imprisoned them within.
The Mint story also addresses an important open question about adversarial interoperability: if we give technologists the right to make these tools, will they work? After all, today's tech giants have entire office-parks full of talented programmers. Can a new market entrant hope to best them in the battle of wits that plays out when they try to plug some new systems into Big Tech's existing ones?
The Mint experience points out that attackers always have an advantage over defenders. For the banks to keep Mint out, they'd have to have perfect scraper-detection systems. For Mint to scrape the banks' sites, they only need to find one flaw in the banks' countermeasures.
Mint also shows how an incumbent company's own size works against it when it comes to shutting out competitors. Recall that when a bank decided to send its lawyers after Mint, Mint was able to retaliate by recruiting the bank's own customers to blast it for that decision. The more users Mint had, the more complaints it would generate—and the bigger a bank was, the more customers it had to become Mint users, and defenders of Mint's right to scrape the bank's site.
It's a neat lesson about the difference between keeping out malicious hackers versus keeping out competitors. If a "bad guy" was attacking the bank's site, it could pull out all the stops to shut the activity down: lawsuits, new procedures for users to follow, even name-and-shame campaigns against the bad actor.
But when a business attacks a rival that is doing its own customers' bidding, its ability to do so has to be weighed against the ill will it will engender with those customers, and the negative publicity this kind of activity will generate. Consider that Big Tech platforms claim billions of users—that's a huge pool of potential customers for adversarial interoperators who promise to protect those users from Big Tech's poor choices and exploitative conduct!
This is also an example of how "adversarial interoperability" can peacefully co-exist with privacy protection: it's not hard to see how a court could distinguish between a company that gets your data from a company's walled garden at your request so that you can use it, and a company that gets your data without your consent and uses it to attack you.
Mint's pro-competitive pressure made banks better, and gave users more control. But of course, today Mint is a division of Intuit, a company mired in scandal over its anticompetitive conduct and regulatory capture, which have allowed it to subvert the Free File program that should give millions of Americans access to free tax-preparation services.
Imagine if an adversarial interoperator were to enter the market today with a tool that auto-piloted its users through the big tax-prep companies' sites to get them to Free File tools that would actually work for them (as opposed to tricking them into expensive upgrades, often by letting them get all the way to the end of the process before revealing that something about the user's tax situation makes them ineligible for that specific Free File product).
Such a tool would be instantly smothered with legal threats, from "tortious interference" to hacking charges under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. And yet, these companies owe their size and their profits to exactly this kind of conduct.
Creating legal protections for adversarial interoperators won't solve all our problems of market concentration, regulatory capture, and privacy violations—but giving users the right to control how they interact with the big services would certainly open a space where technologists, co-ops, entrepreneurs and investors could help erode the big companies' dominance, while giving the public a better experience and a better deal.

HOW HUMANS ARE HAVING THEIR LIVES RUINED BY KARKAT VANTAS
[plain text]
ALRIGHT, HERE’S THE BASICS OF CAPITALISM FROM A WORKING CLASS AMERICAN. I WANT TO START OUT BY SAYING I DON’T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT EUROPE, CANADA, AUSTRALIA, OR ANY OTHER “FIRST-WORLD” COUNTRIES. I DON’T KNOW WHO TORIES ARE AND I DON’T CARE ABOUT EMMANUEL MACRON. FOREIGN AFFAIRS ARE NOT MY CUP OF TEA THANKS. I HAVE ENOUGH PROBLEMS WITH DOMESTIC POLITICS. ALSO DON’T GET ON MY ASS ABOUT CALLING IT AMERICA INSTEAD OF THE U.S.A., CANADIANS DON’T ACTUALLY WANT TO BE AMERICANS AND IF THEY DO THEY’RE MORONS FOR REASONS THAT WILL BECOME CLEAR AS YOU READ ON.
YOU KNOW HOW IN A NORMAL SOCIETY, TRADE IS DRIVEN BY RESOURCES AND PRICES ARE DETERMINED BY THE AVAILABILITY, COMPLEXITY, AND DIFFICULTY IN PRODUCTION OF A PRODUCT? SO IMAGINE YOUR COUNTRY GETS ENOUGH MONEY, POWER, AND SHEER BLIND DEVOTION FROM ITS CITIZENS TO THROW ALL THAT IN THE GARBAGE, AND THEN IMAGINE THAT EVERYONE CAPABLE OF MAKING MEANINGFUL CHANGES AT A FUNDAMENTAL LEVEL, WHILE REMAINING WITHIN THE CURRENT SYSTEM, IS OWNED BY SOMEONE WHO BENEFITS EGREGIOUSLY FROM EVERYTHING STAYING THE SAME, AND EVEN MORE EGREGIOUSLY FROM THINGS BECOMING WORSE. NOW IMAGINE THAT WHEN I SAID “SOMEONE” I MEANT “ONE OF MAYBE FIFTEEN MEGA-CORPORATIONS THAT OWNS EVERY OTHER BUSINESS IN THE COUNTRY,” AND WHEN I SAY “EVERYONE CAPABLE OF MAKING MEANINGFUL CHANGES...” I MEAN POLITICIANS WE ELECT TO PRETEND TO REPRESENT OUR INTERESTS WHO HAVE IN REALITY BEEN BOUGHT OUT BY CORPORATE INTERESTS AND RISK LOSING THEIR JOBS IF THEY MAKE LAWS THAT THREATEN THOSE CORPORATE INTERESTS’ BOTTOM LINES. BASICALLY, WE INVESTED ALL OUR POWER INTO PRIVATELY OWNED MONEY SINKS AND FORGOT TO CARE ABOUT THE THINGS THAT MATTER, LIKE THE ACTUAL CITIZENS? OKAY THIS IS GETTING AWAY FROM ME, WE MIGHT HAVE TO START FROM THE BASICS.
I DON’T KNOW HOW YOUR SOCIETY WORKS, BUT IN OURS, YOU START OUT AS A LITTLE BABY. AS SOON AS YOU’RE PHYSIOLOGICALLY CAPABLE OF EXISTING FOR CONSECUTIVE HOURS WITHOUT THE PEOPLE WHO RAISED YOU, THEY SHOVE YOU IN A CLASSROOM AND START FEEDING YOU A MIXTURE OF COLONIAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL, PHILOSOPHICAL, AND POLITICAL PROPAGANDA. THAT’S ALSO WHERE THEY TEACH YOU HOW TO SOCIALIZE WITH KIDS YOUR AGE AND SHIT. FOR SOME KIDS IT’S THE *ONLY* PLACE THEY CAN LEARN TO SOCIALIZE, BECAUSE THEIR PARENTS ARE TOO BUSY, ABSENT, OR PROTECTIVE TO BRING YOU OUT TO INTERACT WITH PEERS. EITHER WAY, THIS IS WHERE KIDS FORM THEIR CONCEPTS OF BOTH PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS AND SOCIAL CONTRACTS. THE TRAUMA OF RACIAL AND GENDER PROFILING IS NASCENT HERE, BUT OH BOY IT INTERNALIZES QUICKLY. (MORE ON HOW PEOPLE OF COLOR, THE WAR ON DRUGS, AND PROFIT ARE ALL LINKED LATER ON, OR MAYBE JUST LOOK UP A VIDEO ESSAY ON IT IDK.)
IT’S PRETTY MUCH THIRTEEN YEARS OF THIS SAME SHIT, ESPECIALLY THE PROPAGANDA BIT. KIDS GROW UP BEING INDOCTRINATED WITH THIS COMPLETELY WHITEWASHED VERSION OF REALITY, BELIEVING CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS* IS THE SHIT AND CAPITALISM IS THE ONLY EFFICIENT MODEL FOR MODERN SOCIETY. THEY’RE USUALLY TAUGHT ALL ABOUT WORLD WARS I AND II, THE VIETNAM WAR, THE COLD WAR, AND THE SPACE RACE, WHICH (BY UNEQUIVOCALLY POSING AMERICANS AS THE GOOD GUYS AND THE SOVIETS AND CHINESE AS THE BAD GUYS,  CEMENTS THE CONCEPT THAT CAPITALISM INHERENTLY RULES AND COMMUNISM INHERENTLY FAILS) FURTHER INDOCTRINATES KIDS. IF YOU’RE REALLY AN ALIEN I DOUBT YOU’VE SEEN THIS IMAGE, BUT EVERY SINGLE AMERICAN EARTHLING HAS:
Tumblr media
THIS GUY IS NAMED UNCLE SAM, HE’S BASICALLY AMERICA’S FURSONA. HE EXISTS TO PRESSURE YOU INTO SIGNING UP TO FIGHT IN A WAR. HE WAS USED A LOT IN THOSE WARS I TALKED ABOUT UP THERE, ESPECIALLY THE FIRST THREE. HE’S NOT AROUND SO MUCH ANY MORE BUT THE GENERAL SENTIMENT IS. HERE’S HOW.
WHEN YOU GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL, THE LAST “REQUIRED” STAGE OF SCHOOL, YOU ARE EXPECTED TO MOVE OUT AND GET A JOB TO SUPPORT YOURSELF. BUT NOWADAYS, IF YOU WANT A JOB THAT PAYS FOR YOUR HEALTH CARE, LETS YOU STAY HOME WHEN YOU GET SICK, GIVES YOU DAYS OFF TO GO TO FAMILY EVENTS SUCH AS WEDDINGS, FUNERALS, THE BIRTH OF YOUR CHILDREN, AND OTHER UNIMPORTANT DRIVEL THAT DOESN’T MAKE CEOS MONEY, YOU BET YOUR ASS YOU’D BETTER GET A COLLEGE DEGREE. HAVING A DEGREE IS THE NUMBER ONE WAY YOU CAN GUARANTEE THAT YOU MAKE MORE MONEY. THAT ALL SOUNDS FINE AND DANDY, EXCEPT NOW YOU HAVE TO PAY SOME INDUSTRIAL-SCALE LOAN SHARK MORE THAN YOU’LL EVER HAVE IN YOUR 401(K) TO LET YOU GET YOUR HIGHER EDUCATION. A LOT OF PEOPLE END UP OWING UPWARDS OF FIFTY GRAND TO A PRIVATELY OWNED LOAN AGENCY BY THE TIME THEY’RE TWENTY-ONE, BECAUSE AS FRESH ADULTS THEY WERE TOLD THEY WOULDN’T GET A WORTHWHILE JOB UNLESS THEY HAD A DEGREE. BUT HERE’S THE THING: A LOT OF TIMES, JOBS LIKE THAT WON’T EVEN HIRE YOU UNLESS YOU HAVE A MASTER’S DEGREE NOW! THAT’S ANOTHER TWO YEARS OF CLASSES AND ANOTHER HUGE CHUNK OF MONEY YOU NEVER HAD TO BEGIN WITH.
OF COURSE THERE ARE LESS EXPENSIVE OPTIONS, LIKE TRADE SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY COLLEGE. BUT REMEMBER THE PROPAGANDA I MENTIONED? IT’S SO PERVASIVE, A LOT OF YOUNG PEOPLE DON’T EVEN CONSIDER TRADE SCHOOL AN OPTION NOW, BECAUSE WE CULTURALLY VALUE THE “INTELLECTUAL” JOBS—DOCTOR, LAWYER, ENGINEER, ACCOUNTANT, BUSINESSMAN—WHICH ARE STRANGELY ALSO THE CAREER PATHS THAT REQUIRE THE MOST INVESTMENT OF TIME AND MONEY! NOW IF YOU DECIDE TO BE LIKE ME AND GET A JOB RIGHT OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL BECAUSE THE EDUCATION INDUSTRY IS A PUTRID WASTELAND, YOU’RE AUTOMATICALLY LOOKED DOWN UPON. A LOT OF TIMES PEOPLE WHO ARE PURSUING LESS LUCRATIVE CAREERS THAT INTEREST THEM***, INSTEAD OF THE BIG MONEY JOBS, ARE DISPARAGINGLY ASKED IF THEY WANT TO “END UP WORKING AT MCDONALDS.” I DON’T PERSONALLY WORK AT MCDONALDS BUT THIS SHIT STILL OFFENDS ME. BUT THEN AGAIN I’M A MILLENNIAL SNOWFLAKE SO WHAT DO I KNOW.
ACADEMIA HAS A LOT OF ITS OWN PROBLEMS BUT I’VE ONLY HEARD THOSE SECONDHAND, SO LET’S LEAVE THAT HELLSCAPE TO ITS ELITISM AND STAY WITHIN THE BLUE-COLLAR SUBCLASS. COMMON PARLANCE WILL REFER TO THREE MAJOR CLASSES: THE LOWER CLASS (DIPLOMATICALLY CALLED THE “WORKING CLASS”, HA FUCKING HA!), THE MIDDLE CLASS (WHICH THEORETICALLY MAKES UP THE MAJORITY OF THE POPULATION), AND THE UPPER CLASS (FUCK THOSE GUYS BUT WE’LL GET AROUND TO THAT LATER.) THIS MODEL IS PRETTY MUCH JUST DESIGNED TO CREATE TENSION WITHIN THE PROLETARIAT, BUT HANG ON A SECOND, I JUST REMEMBERED YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT THE PROLETARIAT IS YET.
SO BASICALLY, THERE’S NOT THAT MUCH DEFINABLE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE “MIDDLE CLASS” AND THE “WORKING CLASS.” WHEN YOU THINK OF WORKING CLASS, COLLOQUIALLY, YOU THINK OF THOSE LOSERS THAT WORK IN THE SERVICE INDUSTRY OR DRIVE TAXIS OR (AND THIS IS INCOMPREHENSIBLE TO SOME PEOPLE) HAVE NO JOB AT ALL. THE MIDDLE CLASS IS MORE LIKE TEACHERS AND MIDDLE MANAGERS AND GUYS THAT BUILD SOFTWARE REMOTELY FOR MICROSOFT. REALLY THOUGH, THERE’S NO WAY TO DRAW A DEFINITIVE LINE BETWEEN THESE PEOPLE. THE BEST WAY TO DEFINE CLASS IN AMERICA, (AND ALSO APPARENTLY GERMANY, AT LEAST IN THE 19TH CENTURY,) IS TO SEPARATE THOSE WHO PRODUCE GOODS AND THOSE WHO OWN THE GOODS THAT ARE PRODUCED. THERE IS NO “MIDDLE CLASS”, THAT’S JUST A MEANINGLESS THING TO STRIVE FOR BASED ON WHAT WHITE FAMILIES IN SITCOMS LOOK AND ACT LIKE.
WORKERS WHO PRODUCE GOODS AND SERVICES ARE THE BACKBONE OF SOCIETY AND THEY’RE CALLED THE PROLETARIAT. THEY ARE SERVICE WORKERS AND JANITORS AND TAXI DRIVERS AND HOTEL VALETS, BUT THEY ARE ALSO ELECTRICIANS AND PLUMBERS AND MECHANICS, AND THEY ARE LAWYERS AND DOCTORS AND PROFESSORS, AND THEY ARE YOUTUBERS AND INFLUENCERS AND SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGERS. THE PROLETARIAT IS ANYONE WHO MAKES MONEY BY SELLING THEIR LABOR. THEY CAN BE CONTRACTORS SELLING THEIR LABOR TO INDEPENDENT BUYERS, OR FREELANCERS SELLING THEIR LABOR TO MULTIPLE LARGER BUSINESSES, BUT MOST OF THE PROLETARIAT IS DIRECTLY EMPLOYED BY SOME KIND OF COMPANY OWNED BY A MEMBER OF THE BOURGEOISIE.
THE BOURGEOISIE IS KIND OF A MEME AT THIS POINT BUT THEIR IMPACT ON THE WAY WE LIVE IS FUCKING INESCAPABLE. THEY’RE PEOPLE WHO *BUY* OUR LABOR, ACCRUE CAPITAL BY SITTING ON THEIR (SOMETIMES LITERAL!!!) THRONES, OWNING COMPANIES AND PEOPLE, SOMETIMES BEING A PUBLIC FIGURE (LIKE ELON MUSK) WHO RAKES IN ADORATION FROM HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF MINDLESS TWITTER DRONES WHO STILL BELIEVE IN CLASS MOBILITY****, OR SOMETIMES BEING A SHADOWY FIGURE IN THE BACKGROUND (LIKE THE KOCH BROTHERS) WHO JUST PASSIVELY RAKE IN THE BENEFITS OF OUR HARD WORK AND CAN’T BE ASSASSINATED BECAUSE NO ONE WOULD RECOGNIZE THEM IF THEY WERE SEEN AT KROGER. THEY ARE USUALLY BORN WEALTHY, BUT VERY RARELY THEY CAN USE THEIR CHARISMA, INTELLIGENCE, SOCIAL CONNECTIONS, AND INTRINSIC PRIVILEGE AS A WHITE PERSON TO YANK THEMSELVES UP FROM THE PROLETARIAT (READ MY CLASS MOBILITY NOTE FOR MORE!!!)
SO THE RESULT OF THIS CLASS DIVISION IS AS FOLLOWS:
THE PROLETARIAT NEVER EARNS THE ACTUAL VALUE OF THEIR LABOR. A “SMALL” CHUNK IS ALWAYS TAKEN OUT FOR THE PEOPLE AT THE TOP, WHO “RUN” THE COMPANY (BUT REALLY THEIR JOB IS USUALLY TO EAT FANCY LUNCH AND TELL RACIST GOLF JOKES TO RICH INVESTORS). IN FACT, WAGES ARE USUALLY ENTIRELY DISSOCIATED FROM THE ACTUAL PROFIT THE COMPANY MAKES. FOR A BUSINESS TO BE PROFITABLE, IT HAS TO PAY THE EMPLOYEES IT RELIES ON LESS THAN WHAT THEY BRING TO THE TABLE, WHICH MEANS MOST COMPANIES ESTABLISH A BASE WAGE THAT’S EITHER EXACTLY THE STATE’S MINIMUM WAGE OR A COUPLE CENTS HIGHER TO COMPETE. THEY LITERALLY PAY THE LEAST THEY LEGALLY CAN. SOMETIMES *LESS*.
YOUR JOB IS EXPECTED TO BE THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN YOUR LIFE. EXHAUSTED AFTER YOUR FORTY, FIFTY, OR SIXTY HOUR WORK WEEK? THAT’S JUST NORMAL, THEY’RE NOT SQUEEZING THE MAXIMUM AMOUNT OF LABOR OUT OF YOU THAT THEY CAN WITHOUT KILLING YOU! WANT TO TAKE A FEW DAYS OFF TO SPEND TIME WITH YOUR WIFE AFTER SHE GAVE BIRTH TO YOUR INFANT CHILD? SORRY, YOU’RE OUT OF SICK DAYS. MISSED THE BUS AND THERE’S NOT ANOTHER ONE FOR AN HOUR? IT’S YOUR FAULT FOR NOT HAVING A CAR OR SPENDING FIFTY BUCKS ON AN UBER. TRYING TO GO TO YOUR FIFTH FAMILY FUNERAL BECAUSE ALL YOUR RELATIVES ARE DROPPING LIKE FLIES AFTER A HARD SIXTY YEARS OF LABOR? OOH, SORRY, YOU ONLY GET FOUR FUNERAL DAYS A YEAR! NEED TO GET ANOTHER JOB BECAUSE YOUR CURRENT ONE DOESN’T PAY ENOUGH? WELL, YOU FORGOT TO DISCLOSE IT TO YOUR BOSS AND THEY FIRED YOU FOR TWO-TIMING THEM! A JOB IS MORE OF A COMMITMENT THAN A SPOUSE, AND IF YOU HAVE OTHER PRIORITIES, YOU WON’T LAST LONG.
BECAUSE THE BOURGEOISIE OWNS SERVICES THAT SHOULD BE PROVIDED BY THE GOVERNMENT, LIKE HEALTHCARE, HOME AND AUTO INSURANCE, A LOT OF HIGHER EDUCATION ESTABLISHMENTS, CREDIT BUREAUS, LOAN COMPANIES, AND HOSPITALS, PROFIT IS THE MOTIVE THERE TOO! WHICH MEANS IF YOU HAVE ANY KIND OF INSURANCE, NEED TO BUY A HOUSE OR A CAR, WANT OR NEED AN EDUCATION, ARE CHRONICALLY ILL, OR JUST EXIST ON A GENERAL BASIS, COMPANIES ARE RIPPING YOU OFF. YOU ARE BASICALLY PAYING THOUSANDS A MONTH FOR THE CHANCE TO GET *SOME* OF YOUR MASSIVE HOSPITAL BILL COVERED IF YOU GET IN AN ACCIDENT. THIS ONE IS NEAR AND DEAR TO ME. FOR UNIMPORTANT REASONS, I MANAGE TO RACK UP A LOT OF DEBT EVERY YEAR GOING TO HOSPITALS AND URGENT CARE, CALLING AMBULANCES, PAYING FOR MEDICATION THAT DOESN’T WORK. DID YOU KNOW YOU’RE CHARGED NIGHTLY TO STAY IN HOSPITALS LIKE THEY’RE GODDAMN HOTELS? LIKE IT’S A FUCKING VACATION? AND DID YOU KNOW THE BILLING DEPARTMENTS OF EACH OF THESE PRIVATELY OWNED ESTABLISHMENTS IS MADE UP OF UNDERPAID, OVERSTRESSED MEMBERS OF THE PROLETARIAT WHOSE JOB IS TO FUCK UP YOUR BILL SO YOU OWE MORE THAN YOUR VISIT ACTUALLY COST?
MEDICAL FACILITIES ARE ALSO PUSHED TO SELL OVERPRICED DRUGS THAT DON’T WORK TO PEOPLE. HEADS UP, GUYS, BUT ANTIBIOTICS DON’T WORK AGAINST VIRAL INFECTIONS, AND YET THEY’RE PRESCRIBED FOR THE FLU AND COMMON COLD EVERY DAY. AND SOMETIMES THE DRUGS DO WORK, BUT THEY’RE STILL OVERPRICED! IF YOU’VE BEEN ON THE INTERNET AT ALL THIS YEAR YOU’LL KNOW ALL ABOUT THE INSULIN CRISIS, WHICH WAS CREATED ARTIFICIALLY. BASICALLY THE PEOPLE WHO OWN INSULIN (YEAH, *OWN* A LIFE-SAVING MEDICATION) RACKED UP THE PRICE SO MUCH THAT PEOPLE COULDN’T FUCKING AFFORD IT ANYMORE, DESPITE A NORMAL DOSE OF INSULIN COSTING LIKE FIFTY CENTS TO MAKE?? OR, HOW ABOUT THIS—THEY INVENTED THIS COOL NEW CHEAP PAIN-RELIEVING DRUG CALLED FENTANYL AND DISCOVERED THEY COULD MAKE A SHIT TON OF MONEY OFF IT, SO DOCTORS PRESCRIBED THE HELL OUT OF IT UNTIL PEOPLE GOT SO ADDICTED TO IT THAT TENS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE DIED OF OVERDOSES. OH, DID I SAY “PRESCRIBED” IN THE PAST TENSE? MY BAD, THEY CONTINUE TO PRESCRIBE IT EVERY SINGLE DAY. IF YOU HAVE CHRONIC PAIN AND ASK DOCTORS NOT TO PUT YOU ON PAIN MEDICATION, A LOT OF TIMES THEY WILL STILL PUT YOU ON PAIN MEDICATION. IF YOU EXPLAIN TO YOUR DOCTOR THAT YOU KICKED A HEROIN ADDICTION AND YOU REALLY WOULD NOT LIKE TO HAVE OPIOIDS PUT IN YOUR BODY, THEY WILL PROBABLY STILL BE LIKE, HUH, SUCKS FOR YOU, AND PUT OPIOIDS IN YOUR BODY.
DO YOU WANT TO CHANGE ANY OF THIS? PERHAPS PETITION YOUR LOCAL POLITICIAN, OR GOD FORBID, STATE CONGRESSMAN, TO PASS A LAW THAT YOU THINK MIGHT IMPROVE YOUR LIFE? WELL, IT TURNS OUT YOU NEED A LOT OF MONEY TO RUN A CAMPAIGN NOWADAYS, AND POLITICIANS ARE ALLOWED TO BE SPONSORED BY BIG BUSINESSES, BECAUSE BUSINESSES ARE PEOPLE. SO IF YOU’RE THE SENATOR OF NEW JERSEY OR WHATEVER, AND YOUR CONSTITUENTS WANT YOU TO VOTE TO RAISE THE MINIMUM WAGE, BUT YOUR CAMPAIGN IS OWNED BY WALMART, WHO WANTS TO KEEP PAYING ITS WORKERS ELEVEN BUCKS AN HOUR, YOU HAVE THE CHOICE BETWEEN MAKING A COUPLE LITTLE WORKING CLASS IDIOTS ANGRY OR GETTING ALL YOUR FUNDING FROM WALMART PULLED BECAUSE YOU THREATENED THEIR PROFIT MARGINS.
NOT ACTIVELY DYING FROM A TREATABLE ILLNESS, WASTING AWAY FROM DRUG ADDICTION, OR ENTRENCHED IN SLAVERY TO A CORPORATION WHOSE PRODUCT YOU DON’T BELIEVE IN? GREAT! DID YOU KNOW THE PLANET WILL BE ON FIRE IN LIKE A FEW DECADES? OIL AND GAS COMPANIES HAVE SO MUCH INFLUENCE OVER THE LAWMAKERS THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO PROHIBIT THEM FROM RUINING THE PLANET, THEY’VE PUT THE ONUS OF SAVING IT ON INDIVIDUALS’ SHOULDERS. REDUCE YOUR CARBON EMISSIONS BY TAKING THAT HOURLY BUS (YOU’LL EITHER BE FIFTY MINUTES EARLY TO WORK OR TEN MINUTES LATE!) OR RECYCLING YOUR SHIT (BUT IF YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOUR MUNICIPALITY CAN’T RECYCLE, THEY’LL THROW THE WHOLE BATCH OUT WHEN YOU PUT TRASH IN) OR TURNING THE LIGHTS OFF IN YOUR HOUSE (JUST EAT DINNER IN THE DARK YOU PIECE OF SHIT) OR INSTALLING SOLAR PANELS ON YOUR HOUSE (FUCK ME FOR RENTING I GUESS?) THERE IS SO MUCH WE CAN DO JUST WHENEVER TO SWITCH TO SUSTAINABLE ENERGY, BUT EXXON AND BP AND SHELL OWN SO MUCH INFLUENCE THAT WE’RE JUST *NOT*, AND LEAVING THIS WASTELAND OF A HOME PLANET TO OUR FUTURE GENERATIONS. BUT AT LEAST ELON MUSK BUILT THIS REALLY COOL LOW-POLY BETHESDA LOOKING PIECE OF SHIT FOR US TO MAKE MEMES ABOUT
HERE’S THE SKINNY OF IT, PEOPLE. THERE’S NO OUT WITHIN OUR CURRENT SYSTEM. EVEN IF YOU DID THE MAGIC AND PULLED YOURSELF UP BY YOUR BOOTSTRAPS AND NOW YOU’RE A BIG BOY WHO OWNS HIS OWN COMPANY, YOU LEFT BEHIND A BUNCH OF PEOPLE WHO DIDN’T WIN THE BIRTH LOTTERY LIKE YOU DID. INNOCENT FOLKS ARE DYING OF HUNGER OR ILLNESS THEY CAN’T AFFORD TO TREAT, CRASHING CARS THEY CAN’T AFFORD TO FIX, WORKING THEMSELVES LITERALLY TO DEATH TO SUPPORT THEMSELVES OR THEIR FAMILIES, AND SCRAPING BY WITH A MEASLY ALLOWANCE OF FREE TIME WITH WHICH TO UNWIND AND CATCH UP WITH OTHER PEOPLE. THEY DON’T HAVE TIME TO WATCH THE NEWS, THINK CRITICALLY ABOUT THE SOCIETY THEY LIVE IN, CONCEPTUALIZE UNIONIZING OR REVOLTING OR BUILDING GUILLOTINES. THEY WANT TO KEEP US EXHAUSTED AND STRUGGLING BECAUSE IT’S WHAT KEEPS THEM COMFORTABLE UP THERE, KNOWING NO ONE HAS THE ENERGY OR THE GALL TO TOUCH THEM. THE ONLY FUCKING WAY TO ESCAPE THIS HELL WE’VE CREATED IS THROUGH REVOLUTION. WE NEED TO SCRAP THIS WHOLE THING AND START OVER. BUT I THINK THAT’S ANOTHER ESSAY. ANYWAY I HOPE THIS WAS THOROUGH ENOUGH FOR A LITERAL ALIEN SOCIETY.
TL;DR: WE ARE ALL FUCKED IF WE DON’T OVERTHROW THE RICH.
---------------
*CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS IS SOME EUROPEAN WHO SAILED THE WRONG WAY AND ENDED UP IN THE AMERICAS. HE AND HIS BUDDIES RAPED AND PILLAGED THEIR WAY THROUGH A BUNCH OF INDIGINOUS COMMUNITIES AND DECIDED THIS COUNTRY WAS “FREE REIGN” TO SETTLE IN. HE IS HAILED AS THE AMERICAN ODYSSEUS AND CREDITED WITH THE “DISCOVERY” OF AMERICA BECAUSE OF COURSE ALL THOSE PEOPLE WHO LIVED HERE FIRST DON’T COUNT??
**I DON’T KNOW SHIT ABOUT WARS EITHER BUT LET’S GET INTO IT FROM THE POV OF A GUY WHO PASSED HIS WORLD HISTORY CLASS WITH A STRAIGHT B MINUS.
THE FIRST WORLD WAR: I DON’T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT THIS ONE.
THE SECOND WORLD WAR: THE ONE WHERE A BUNCH OF SCIENTISTS AND GOVERNMENT OFFICERS BOMBED A COUPLE OF CIVILIAN SETTLEMENTS IN JAPAN AND I’M PRETTY SURE AN *ENTIRE HAWAIIAN ISLAND* JUST TO SEE WHAT HAPPENED. TURNS OUT IT KILLED A BUNCH OF CIVILIANS. HUH! WHO’D HAVE EXPECTED THAT! OH IT ALSO TURNED AN ENTIRE GENERATION OF OTHERWISE DECENT FOLKS INTO RABIDLY PATRIOTIC IDIOTS, BECAUSE THE PACE AT WHICH THIS COUNTRY CHURNS OUT PROPAGANDA DURING A WAR IS FASTER THAN THE SPEEDING RUBBER BAND I SHOT WITH MY FINGERS AT THE TEACHER WHO WAS EXPLAINING WHY EVERY OTHER COUNTRY WAS IN THE ABSOLUTE WRONG DURING THIS CATASTROPHE.
VIETNAM: OKAY SO BASICALLY PEOPLE HATED THIS ONE BECAUSE THEY REALIZED SOLDIERS WERE GOING ALL CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS ON THE COUNTRIES WHERE THEY WERE STATIONED. ENOUGH SAID.
COLD WAR: THIS IS NOMINALLY A WAR BECAUSE THE GOOD OLD U.S.A. AND ITS HATEFUCKBUDDY THE U.S.S.R.† DID THIS WITH WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION
Tumblr media
(EVENTUALLY THEY DECIDED TO PUT THE FINGER GUNS AWAY. I’M GONNA LET YOU TRY TO PUZZLE OUT ON YOUR OWN HOW COUNTRIES “PUT AWAY” NUCLEAR WEAPONS CAPABLE OF ENDING ALL LIFE ON EARTH.)
SPACE RACE: THE U.S. AND THE U.S.S.R. HAD A FUN COMPETITION TO SEE WHOSE DICK WAS BIG ENOUGH TO GET TO THE MOON. SCIENCE IS RUINED.
***ARTISTS, WRITERS, JOURNALISTS, VIDEO ESSAYISTS, AND ANYONE ELSE WHO ISN’T EITHER OWNED OR SPONSORED (THAT’S A FANCY WORD FOR “OWNED”) BY BIG BUSINESS TEND TO BE THREATENED BY POVERTY. PRETTY MUCH ANYONE WHO CAN FREELANCE ACTUALLY, BECAUSE WORKING FOR A CORPORATION PROVIDES THE SAFETY NET THAT SOCIAL PROGRAMS WOULD OTHERWISE TAKE CARE OF IF SOCIAL PROGRAMS WERE FUNDED EVER.
****ALSO KNOWN AS THE AMERICAN DREAM, IN WHICH *ANYBODY* CAN MAKE IT IN THIS COUNTRY IF THEY TRY HARD ENOUGH! UNFORTUNATELY THIS IS A MYTH, AS YOU CAN SEE BY THE FACT THAT I AM STILL REALLY POOR, AS IS LIKE 90% OF THE COUNTRY. PLUS CLASS MOBILITY WORKS REALLY HARD TO KEEP MINORITIES IN EXTREME POVERTY, BECAUSE IT DOESN’T EXIST AS AN ISOLATED SYSTEM AND ANYONE WHO THINKS IT DOES IS A DUMBSHIT WHO’S BOUGHT INTO THIS EVEN MORE THAN THE AVERAGE DUMBSHIT.

Woke The F*ck Up- Chapter 30
March 6th, 2019
“How did the meeting go?” Kara asks as she looks over the paperwork. The office is half-finished, and a folding table is serving as her desk. Construction lights illuminate the main room and provide her only light. It’s getting late, but she wants to get through all this work before she leaves so that the general contractor can get to work first thing in the morning.
“Very good. They’re letting me sell my shares back to them. I’m just under a non-disclosure for a year and then a non-compete for another year after that.” Lena says over the phone.
“Two years is a long time for you not to produce music. Are you still sure about that?”
“Yes. I think it would be good to take a break. I’ve been going and going my whole life. Besides, I can still write and begin plans for my new music production company. I just can’t go public or look for clients until that window is up, but I can get everything ready.”
“As long as you will be happy with that, I will be.”
“How is your day going?”
“Good. Construction will officially start tomorrow. I’m just finishing up signing some stuff before they start. I’ll go back to your penthouse in a few minutes.”
“Babe, you have spent more time there than I have in the whole time I’ve owned it.”
“But it’s still yours.”
“What if it was ours?” Lena asks tentatively.
Kara pauses her skimming with her pen poised over a signature line. The silence fills the room. She can’t even hear Lena breathing. “Are you… Are you asking me to move in with you?”
Lena sighs out a breath, “Yeah, I think I am. Are you saying yes?”
Kara laughs out of relief. “Yes. Of course, it's a ‘yes’, Lee. It would have been a little more romantic in person. At least then I could kiss you.”
“Then why don’t you?” Lena says from the doorway.
Kara grins up at her in the soft light that illuminates Lena’s silhouette. Lena holds a bundle of flowers in one hand and a bag of take-out in the other. Kara climbs to her feet and cups Lena’s face to kiss her girlfriend. It’s been weeks since they were in the same city with Lena finishing her tour and ending her contract with Green Diamond Records. Then Kara was finishing closing this deal in Metropolis and setting up her National City gym to run without her while she established her second location.
“I’ve missed you,” Kara whispers, adding another peck to Lena’s lips after the much more passionate kiss.
“Hmmm… Me too.”
“Did you fly out as soon as your meeting was over?”
“Yes. I wanted to see you. I wanted to ask you to move in with me. Or, well… share property with me. I know our lives are a little crazy right now, but when this is over, and I am somewhere a little more permanently, I want to come home to you.”
“I think that may just be the most romantic thing you have ever said to me.” Kara smooths her thumb over Lena’s cheek.
“Really? Not the dozens of songs I’ve written about you.”
“Not even close. I want us to build a home together.” “Then let’s go home and eat this Chinese food before it gets cold.”
‘You had me at Home. Though Chinese food is a nice bonus.”

August 21st, 2019
Alex leans against the car next to Sam as they watch Ruby head into the high school. Alex tightens her grip on Sam’s hand as Sam wipes at tears escaping from her eyes. It’s been pushing it to get Ruby enrolled in time when Sam decided to move back to National City with Alex as she took over the director position. They had just three weeks to pack both houses and Alex’s apartment, enroll Ruby, get travel documents, and find a new place for them to live. Together. Lena was staying in London to oversee the sale of the house for Sam before she and Kara settled in Metropolis for the time being. Kara was adamant that she would not call Metropolis home and that this move was temporary.
“She’s going to be fine. She has you for a mother, after all.” Alex reassures Sam.
“I know. I’m a mess. I knew this day was coming, but it seemed forever away. Now I’ve blinked, and my baby girl is going off to high school.”
“Just wait, in four years, we get to do it all over again.”
“Yeah. We do. But would you want to do it from the beginning with me?” Sam asks.
“Like kids? And babies? With you?”
Sam nods.
“That’s all I’ve ever wanted. To be a mother. And to do it with you? That’s a dream.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah.” Alex kisses her girlfriend. “But how will Ruby feel?”
“She’ll be ecstatic. She’s already bugged me about being my maid of honor at our wedding and how we need to get a bigger place because she refuses to share a room.”
“Shouldn’t one of us propose first?”
“Probably, but we’ll get there. No rush.”

December 10th, 2020
Kara drops her bag by the front door and kicks off her dirty shoes. It’s her third trip taking high schoolers to different countries for service projects. It has already helped eight of them get scholarships to colleges. It’s fun and a great learning experience for them all, but Kara is more than happy to come home to her girlfriend and indoor plumbing.
“Lee! I’m home!” Kara calls as she walks through their penthouse, intending on kissing Lena before showering and passing out in her own bed. Krypto meets her in the hallway with excited prancing until Kara Leans down to hug him and scratches behind his ears.
“In the living room!” Lena calls back.
Kara manages to stagger that way, only to be drawn up short by a dozen people and bright lights. Equipment takes up the living room space that hasn’t been rearranged. Lena weaves her way between people with her assistant Eve, who has left Green Diamond to follow Lena, right at her heels.
“What is this?” Kara asks.
“I’m sorry. With your flight delayed, I didn’t get a chance to tell you I’m having an interview done. Kind of a tell-all. We hope that it will keep me relevant enough that in the spring it will be easier when I start producing to gain business.”
“Uh… Okay?” Kara’s too tired to process this.
“Go shower and sleep, babe. We will try and keep it down.” Lena kisses her dazed girlfriend’s cheek.
“Will you be working later?”
“Yes, probably. I’ll probably take them in there too.”
“Okay. Talk later?”
“Yes, we can talk later. After you sleep. I’ll order your favorite.”
Kara grins sleepily and pecks her girlfriend on the lips once more before disappearing down the hall towards their room, Krypto at her heels. Lena watches after her a moment before taking a seat back on the couch. Cat Grant emerges from the balcony where she’s been taking a phone call and sits in the chair next to Lena, turned so that she can look at the musician. Streaky settles on Lena’s lap again as Lena settles against the back with her legs crossed. She’s trying to keep the interview as informal as possible. A look into her life that her fans will eat up. Lena has even dressed in jeans, though still designer, and a cashmere sweater.
“Okay, ready to roll?”
“Yes, but I still get to approve the final cut.”
“Of course.” Cat answers, indicating towards the cameraman to start recording.
“So, Lena, where do we begin?”
“I suppose at the beginning. As far as I remember, my life ended and began the day the Luthor’s adopted me. I was welcomed into a cold empty house that I wanted to flee from the moment I entered. It was all so fake, the picturesque family. I was miserable. My only friends were in a dollhouse in a forgotten wing of the mansion.”
Lena tells her story. All of it. The verbally abusive upbringing. The failed relationships. Even the cover-ups for her overdoses and arrests. It’s a long tale about which Cat asks very few questions. Lena has planned to tell everything, and she is going to. Well, almost everything.
“Then one morning, I was here, in National City, when this ray of sunshine asked to share my table outside of this little coffee shop where I was writing. She didn’t recognize me. Wasn’t even a fan. But she was listening to my music because her sister had tickets to see my concert.”
“Really?”
“Yes, front row in fact. Though I found that out later. Anyway, we started talking and lost track of time. I was actually late to the soundcheck. She asked for my number, and I said no. But boy, did I want to give it to her. The next morning, I was nursing a hangover and went for coffee. I thought it would be a good idea to stroll through the park that the beautiful blonde woman had told me she ran through regularly.”
“And did you find her?”
Lena laughs and scratches behind Streaky’s ear. “You could say that. She found me. Well, she ran into me and knocked my coffee to the ground. I did give her my number then. What can I say? It felt like fate.”
“Fate you ushered along.” Cat raises an eyebrow, but Lena just shrugs.
“It was nice, someone chatting with me about nothing really. She wanted to take me on a date, not Lena Luthor. It was then that I knew I was in trouble.”
“In trouble with what?” Cat probes.
“With falling in love with her.”
“And you did?”
“Yes, pretty fast too. She was charming and caring and pretty darn perfect.”
“So it was easy?”
“God, no. I was still on tour. It fell apart just as fast as it began.”
“How so?”
“I won’t get into the details of that. Only half that story is mine to tell. I was still a very broken person. When her life got busy and she missed a few flights and was lying to me about something kind of important, I overreacted a bit. Also my brother was arrested, and I was emotional. I broke things off with her over a phone message. Then I immediately went out and slept with my ex,. Veronica. Kara found us still together, and that started my journey into self healing. Turns out she had started it too, though I didn’t know it. We both had issues to work out.”
“And how did you do that?” Cat crosses her legs and leans forward, intent on getting the full juicy story.
Lena just chuckles. “Therapy. Lot’s of therapy. And before you ask, no, it wasn’t immediate that we got back together. After my kidnapping, we got back in touch and then started therapy together. We toed the friendship line for what seemed like forever. But, in the end, we crossed it. And I couldn’t be happier.”
“Before we dive into your life now, what about your kidnapping? Your family?”
Lena sighs, internally. “My family. The Luthor’s were legally my family but not much more. That story has been beaten to death. My father adopted me after my real mother died. He killed a bunch of people and himself. My brother and mother followed in his footsteps and are now serving multiple life sentences. But they aren’t a real family. The one I have now is. Kara likes to call it our ‘found family’. It’s the family we chose and pieced together. It’s warm and comforting like a patchwork quilt, she says.”
Cat let’s the room fall into silence as she scans her notes. A couple people shuffle and cough behind the bright lights and camera. Lena decides to stay in control of the conversation instead.
“It’s been two years now that we have been together. Even with me not working it’s been hard. Kara is working on opening her third gym and sixth apartment building. She literally just got back from another humanitarian trip with some of the kids. Well, they aren’t really kids, but that’s what we call them. It really helps with their college applications and also transforms how they interact with other people.”
“Kara seems to have kept very busy then. What have you been up to since leaving Green Diamond records?”
“Whatever I want for the most part. I spent the first few weeks doing nothing. It was wonderful. But then I got a little stir crazy. I started volunteering, then, at a couple of places. Started an Instagram for our pet’s that have more followers than us. @YinandYang for anyone not following it. Streaky and Krypto are inseparable and cute. They get into all sorts of mischief here at home. Don’t be fooled though, Krypto is very well trained. Streaky is just too smart for her own good. Then Kara and I decided to move in together, so I spent a lot of time house hunting while she worked.”
“This is a beautiful penthouse. It must have been hard to find and not cheap.”
“Actually, the building was slated for demolition when we bought it. I had it renovated and brought back up to code since it was empty for so long. These high end condos helped pay for some of our other ventures into the lower class apartments. And I was able to have everything here built to my specifications, including my own at home studio and Kara’s personal gym.”
“You have a studio here?”
“Of course. I am planning on starting my own production company once my two year non-compete is up. An actual recording studio is in the process of being purchased, but for now I write in my own.”
“Can we see it?”
“Sure. Let’s get moved over there. I can give you a quick tour before we finish up this interview there.”
“Perfect. Cut the camera’s” Cat directs the last part at the camera man. “Strike the lights and move them to the studio. Carl, I want the mobile camera to follow us on the tour so get it strapped on.”
The man Cat named gives a soft ‘Yes, ma’am,’ before doing as he is told. A flurry of activity fills the room as the crew jumps to do what they are told. Streaky looks annoyed at the noise. She yawns and stretches before wandering off, no doubt to find the warm body of either Kara or Krypto. The amount of photos Lena has of the three of them sleeping together is ridiculous. Streaky had taken on some dog like tendencies, like sleeping in piles and trying to bark at birds, while Krypto took on some cat like ones. He liked to help Streaky groom herself or chase the cat toys. Once, Krypto even caught a mouse that managed to get into their penthouse and nearly gave Lena a heart attack by leaving it next to their bed.
“I am glad you and Kara ended up together” Cat pulls Lena from her thoughts.
“Me too. We did have quite a laugh about you giving me her number though.”
“Yes, yes. Well, I was right, if not just a few days behind.”
“Sorry to keep you in the dark for those months. We really were trying to do it right the first time. But I don’t regret any of my decisions anymore. Both of us made decisions that led us here.”
“Oh please, I understand. The people I have dated would blow your mind, but I don’t parade them around. I’ve even been married to one man that never hit the papers.”
“Really?”
“Oh, yes. We had it annulled three days later.”
“You are a very intriguing woman, Cat.”
“I know.” Cat settles in her chair and watches equipment being moved towards the studio that Lena has indicated to. It takes a few more minutes before Carl is ready.
Lena just gives a simple tour, starting with the high end kitchen. Lena has taken up cooking and baking now that she has more free time. She moves on to the media room that’s more of a small movie theater that hosts a table for board games and Kara’s pool table. Kara has insisted it’s too much, but Lena has convinced her that they need it to host game nights. There are even popcorn and soda machines in one corner. Lena shows them the guest bedrooms and Kara’s gym. Lena pokes her head into their bedroom to check on Kara but smiles when she sees Kara isn’t there. Lena knows exactly where she is.
“Ms. Grant, we have an issue.” One of the crew interrupts.
“Yes?”
“Well, it seems Miss. Danvers is asleep in the studio.”
Lena shuts the door to their bedroom with a laugh. “It’s fine. Set up around her. She’ll sleep through it.”
Cat raises an eyebrow but is obviously waiting for them to be on camera again to ask it. They make their way into the studio, finally. Sure enough, on the couch in the sound booth, Kara is fast asleep. Krypto is on the floor next to the couch, and Streaky is curled on her stomach.
Lena had added the couch because Kara kept insisting on working on paperwork when Lena was working on her music. Kara said that even if they were both busy, it didn’t mean they couldn’t spend time together. So Kara would sit on the floor and work while Lena did. Many times Kara fell asleep because Lena still loved to work in the late hours of the night, going into the morning. That’s when she tended to hit her flow. Three in the morning was still a magical time. But for Kara it’s bedtime, so Lena added the couch.
There are two stools next to the microphone and Lena’s sound board. All of her instruments were in here too. Cat sits on one of the stools as easily as she did the chair in the other room. Lena sits in the other one. A red light comes on.
“So does this happen often?” Cat indicates Kara behind them.
Lena laughs. “Literally all the time. Since she just got home from, oh shoot. I believe she was somewhere in South Africa with some teens building houses. I like to work late, and she likes to work early, so this happens more often than not.”
“And she doesn't wake up?”
“Not usually. I just keep the bass off on playbacks and usually the percussion too.”
“So you are still writing then?” “Of course. I don’t know if I could stop.”
“But you’re not releasing anything?”
“No. I’ve probably written ten thousand songs over the years that never got finished or made it to albums.”
“And you play every part on your albums, correct?”
“Yes, I only use a band on tour. Otherwise, it’s just me.”
“How did you learn to do all of that?”
“When I was first adopted, Lillian had me specially tested in maths and sciences, which I scored high on, but the woman testing me noticed I had more of an aptitude for music and suggested to Lillian I might be a prodigy. Of course, that made Lillian happy. Then the bastard daughter could be useful. Unfortunately, I wasn’t that good at any one thing. But I was able to learn instruments easily enough. Since I wasn’t a prodigy though, Lillian thought music was a waste of time, so it was math and science for me. At least then I could help in the family company.”
“So how wide is your range?”
“Oh, anything really. I even lost a bet with Kara and wrote Take it All Back using a banjo and a mandoline. I’ve consulted on a few rap songs. I can play classical music too. I’m looking at pulling in more alternative, small time artist when I start producing.”
“I’m sorry. Did you say rap? I’m not sure I entirely believe that.”
“Oh yeah. That song, Chills by Down With Webster. They had a good hook but they were struggling with part of it and reached out. I loved the song. We worked together for a couple of weeks. It was great. Of course, I couldn’t be paid or be in the credits with my contracts still in place.”
“I’m still not sure if I believe you.” Cat raises an eyebrow, challenging.
Lena sighs. “All right. I’ll show you then.”
Cat grins, she wanted exactly this. Lena takes a deep breath and looks around a moment, looking for inspiration. Of course, it’s Kara who is still sound asleep. It’s been Kara who inspires her for so long now. Lena begins by using her sound board to record some looping vocals and instrumentals. Cat watches everything intently and makes sure her crew are recording everything.
Dum, dum, dum, dum, dum, dum
Dum, dum-dum, dum, dum, dum, dum
Beautiful, Mind, Mind, Mind
She's literally like 5 feet away from me
While I'm recording this, sleeping on the couch
This is for her, sleepy ass
I wrote this while I'm watching you sleep
You're behind me on the couch and in the studio
So I'm gonna make this all about sleep
And soft so I don't wake you up
You're smiling as you sleep so you dig it
Only I can make some soft shit and rip it
I knew you were dope from the jump like ribbit
Cuz all these other girls fall short like midgets
The Sandman gonna flip when he come through
While you count sheep I'll give him music to jump to
The Sandman gonna flip when he come through
While you count sheep I'll give him music to jump to
While you count sheep I'll give him music to jump to
While you count sheep I'll give him music to jump to
While you count sheep I'll give him music to jump to
I wrote this while I'm watching you sleep
Your hair is all over the place and I love it
I won't put the bass in this beat
If it knocks I might wake you up
You're smiling as you sleep so you like it
She just let me work cuz she know I cook diamonds
She know I'm paid but she still 9-5ing
That's why she allowed to hang while I'm writing
Hahaha
The Sandman gonna flip when he come through
While you count sheep I'll give him music to jump to
The Sandman gonna flip when he come through
While you count sheep I'll give him music to jump to
While you count sheep I'll give him music to jump to
While you count sheep I'll give him music to jump to
While you count sheep I'll give him music to jump to
Dopest musical breakdown ever, ready?
If I make this
Then maybe you will wake up and get naked
Girl I'm playing, girl I'm playing, girl I'm playing
Maybe not
If I make this
Then maybe you will wake up and get naked
Girl I'm playing, girl I'm playing, girl I'm playing
Maybe not
If I make this
Then maybe you will wake up and get naked
Girl I'm playing, girl I'm playing, girl I'm playing
Maybe not
If I make this
Then maybe you will wake up and get naked
Girl I'm playing, girl I'm playing, girl I'm playing
Maybe not
Dum, dum, dum, dum, dum, dum
Dum, dum-dum, dum, dum, dum, dum Uhhhh, look who finally decided to wake up?
Kara has sat up, disturbing Streaky from her sleep again, and she didn’t look happy about it. Kara rubs the sleep from her eyes and smiles at Lena. It was a sweet smile that reminds Lena of everything she loves about Kara.
“That was a wonderful little treat. A little rough but you are one very talented woman. Not that I ever had many doubts about that.”
“Thank You, Cat. Any more questions? If not, my girlfriend is ready for some dinner now.”
Kara hums the affirmative in Lena’s ear before kissing her cheek.
“No, I believe that will do. I’ll have the final copy for your approval next week. Then we can talk about a release date on our website.”
“Sounds wonderful. I’ll walk you out, Cat. Babe, can you feed the pets and pick somewhere to order from?” Lena says.
“Way ahead of you, love.” Kara is already scrolling through her phone.
Lena leads Cat back through the penthouse.
“So, when are you proposing?” Cat asks.
Lena stops dead in her tracks. “I— How did you know?”
Lena decides its better not to play dumb about it. Cat is very observant and can read people very well. She didn’t get to the top of the media world without being the best. Cat just raises an eyebrow while she picks up her purse off the kitchen counter. Lena can hear the kibble hit the bowls in the laundry room so she knows Kara isn’t close enough to hear the conversation as long as she keeps her voice down.
“I haven't figured it out yet. I just bought the ring three days ago.”
“Do it fast. I have a feeling that Kara is thinking along the same lines.”
“I’ll keep that in mind. Call me when you have the video ready.”
“Have a good evening, Lena.”
“You too, Cat.”
And with that, Cat Grant is gone, and the crew is packing supplies back into the entry hall. Lena goes to find her girlfriend to give her a proper welcome home kiss. She really does have to figure out a way to propose so that Kara is her fiancée, not just her girlfriend.

March 31st, 2021
Lena is more than relieved that this day has finally come. A giant concert in the park showcasing a couple of her early talents and giving them their first taste of live performance in a large venue. Lena is also going to be performing a few of her own songs for the first time in two years. The concert has sold out in under an hour. Lena is directing behind the stage with the help of Eve, who has proven steadfastly loyal to Lena. Sam is also somewhere here, now working for Lena in her new company. El Mayarah Music. Lena thinks it’s nerdy, but Kara made a strong argument for the name, starting with Krypto and ending with how they are stronger together. More so than ever.
I've been searching for the right words
But I can't even find an echo
Don't you let go
There are only twenty
Six letters I can use
Just to tell you I won't let go
Don't you let go
I lose my voice when I look at you
Can't make a noise though I'm trying to
Tell you all the right words
Waiting on the right words
Just another lovesick afternoon
Black butterflies and déjà vu
Hoping for the right words
Waiting for the right words
I lose my voice when I look at you
Can't make a noise though I'm trying to
Tell you all the right words
Waiting on the right words
Just another lovesick afternoon
Black butterflies and déjà vu
Hoping for the right words
Waiting for the right words
Lena finishes her last song to the thunderous applause of the crowd. She bows to her fans, huffing and puffing while blowing a kiss here and there. Lena becomes confused when the lights don’t go down like they were supposed to. Sam appears on the stage with a chair and leads Lena to sit in it.
“What is happening?” Lena whispers to her friend.
“Just relax.” Sam practically pushes Lena into the chair and takes her mic off.
Lena’s band starts an instrumental track as five men enter the stage. Lena gasps. She had only met them once before and was slightly star struck because she was slightly obsessed with them. AJ, Howie, Nick, Kevin, and Brian start in on a very 90’s dance routine, but it’s a female voice that starts in on the song, and Kara emerges to sing and dance with the Backstreet Boys.
I've been to Paris, made my way down to Rome
Seen the sun setting on the beach in Mexico
But I could care less, 'cause I was all alone
And there ain't no way to touch your body over the phone
I've been all around the world, done all there is to do
But you'll always be the home I wanna come home to
You're a wild night with a hell of a view
There ain't no place, ain't no place like you
There ain't no place, ain't no place like you
It’s quite amazing and well rehearsed. Kara is playing to the crowd like a professional while also keeping her focus solely on Lena. Kara dances with the men and weaves her much more feminine voice into theirs. Lena begins to have an inkling of what is happening but she is powerless to stop it. She isn’t sure if she wants to.
You're my daybreak, you're my California sun
You're my Memphis, New York, New Orleans all rolled into one
In the city, the country, the mountains or sea
Wherever you are, baby, that's where I wanna be
I've been all around the world, done all there is to do
But you'll always be the home I wanna come home to
You're a wild night with a hell of a view
Kara pulls Lena to her feet and begins to lead her through an improvised dance while singing. Kara swings Lena around, spins her, and Kara’s strong arms support her in a deep dip. The crowd eats it up.
There ain't no place, ain't no place like you
There ain't no place, ain't no place like you, no
There ain't no place (no place, no place)
Ooh, yeah, ain't no place
Wherever you are, baby, that's where I wanna be
I've been all around the world, done all there is to do
But you'll always be the home I wanna come home to
You're a wild night with a hell of a view
There ain't no place, ain't no place like you
There ain't no place, ain't no place like you
Said there ain't no place, ain't no place like you, yeah
Kara spins Lena off again, this time letting go of her hand. Lena loses her bearing a bit and has to steady herself.
There ain't no place (no place, no place)
No place
There ain't no place like
No place like you
No place, no place, no place, no place
There ain't no place, no place like you
When Lena manages to turn around, Kara is down on one knee with a ring sitting displayed in a little box, and Lena is sure now what is happening.
“Lena Luthor, you are the love of my life, and all I want to do is come home to you for the rest of it. Will you marry me?” Kara asks, slightly out of breath after giving it her all in the performance.
“That depends, is this you finally admitting that Backstreet Boys is better than NSYNC?”
A chorus of ‘Oooo's’ and cheers mix with ‘Boo’s’ as the boy band shuffle a little awkwardly, not expecting that reponse. Kara hangs her head in mock shame, a smile still fixed firmly on her face at their old argument. She laughs softly but the microphone taped to her cheek picks it up for all to hear.
“I will never listen to NSYNC again if that’s what it will take for you to say ‘yes’ right now. This did take several months to plan, and I’d rather not make a fool of myself in front of a hundred thousand of your fans.”
Lena laughs and shakes her head, her own microphone picking up every word. “Oh come here, of course it is a yes.” Lena grasps Kara’s wrist and pulls her up for a kiss. Kara eagerly obliges and nearly drops the ring box. It takes a moment for Kara to actually get it on Lena’s finger. It fits perfectly, Kara no doubt getting her ring size from Gabriel because despite their rocky start, he has actually grown very fond of Lena’s girlfriend. Though he still curses Kara’s preference for motorcycles and occasionally leaving visible marks on Lena’s neck.
“Well, that was quite a show. I hope it made your night, I know it made mine. And much better than an encore.” Sam’s voice shakes Kara and Lena out of their bubble. “All the artists you have seen here tonight have albums available for purchase at the merchandise tables or online. Keep an eye out for future El Mayarah releases and drive safely.”
Finally the lights go down, and Kara helps lead Lena off the stage, kissing her again much more passionately once they are away from all those eyes. Lena’s hands begin searching for the hem of Kara’s shirt. Kara’s hands stop her though.
“You’ll have to be a little patient, babe. There is an engagement party that we have to get to.”
Lena groans. “Really? You know how I feel after a concert. And then you proposed to me. What makes you think I can make it through a whole party?”
“I know. It seemed like a good idea when Sam suggested it.”
“How long do we have?”
“Twenty minutes?”
“My dressing room is that way.” Lena points over her shoulder.
Kara grins and practically runs down the hallway with Lena right on her heels.

April 10th, 2021
The Lightning round Mad Gab Tournament was in full swing. Kara and Lena were neck and neck with Ruby and her ‘best friend’ Rachel. Sam had her doubts about that title, but she was letting Ruby come to that realization on her own. Everyone else has been eliminated and are gathered around the table in Lena and Kara’s game room. Ruby counts down and flips the three minute sand timer. Kara flips the first card for Lena to read.
“Ease Ace Life Ox.” Lena reads out loud. Quickly saying it again, stressing different syllables and saying it faster and slower. Trying to work out the actual sentence.
“He’s a sly fox!” Lena shouts.
“Yes!” Kara shouts, slamming down the card.
Lena picks up a card from the deck in front of her, she had snuck her own card on to it as the group settled around the table for the final round. Lena holds it up, suppressing a grin. She had hoped to do this last game night, before Kara’s proposal but the custom made card was late in coming. That was fine, she has a feeling she and Kara have a lifetime of trying to one up romantic gestures.
“Wheel Yum Air Ream Me.” Kara reads aloud, then she goes through the same exercises Lena did to work out the true sentence.
“Will you marry me!” Kara shouts as she stands in her excitement. Then she realizes what she just read out loud and the ring now sitting in Lena’s hand. Kara sits back down in her chair and stares at Lena’s open hand, the ring glinting in the light. The diamonds are small, Lena had it custom made so that they didn’t stick out from the band. That way Kara didn’t have to take it off for most of her activities.
“Are you serious?”
“Are you saying yes?”
“But I already asked you.”
“I know. Turns out I procrastinated too long and you beat me to the punch. Still, I’m asking. Will you marry me?”
“Yes, of course, Lee.”
Cheers come from all around as there friends share in their excitement. And especially loud ‘Yes!’ comes from Ruby and they all look at her.
“Times up. We win!” Ruby shouts and then she and Rachel take off to the other side of the room to power up the Wii.
“Still want to marry me?” Lena asks, knowing how competitive Kara was.
“Only if this is a one time hijacking of game night.”
“I promise I will not intrude on the sanctity of game night ever again.”
“Then yes, I will still marry you.”
“This calls for champaign!” Sam announces, going to retrieve the bottle she snuck in while Kara was busy playing hostess.
“Bourbon for me!” Alex calls after her.
“Your next,” Kara teases her sister.
“Already planning.” Alex throws back with a wink.

✘ Circa ─ December 2019.
✘ Trigger Warnings ─ mentions of statutory rape, forced prostitution, and family drama.
___
It was late December, and Christmas time was fast approaching and Raphael was forced back home to France in order to spend the holidays with his family. He was dreading it in all honesty. Verona was officially his and has been for about a month. Most of his siblings knew about her, but he had yet to tell his parents. He was dreading the confrontation that was bound to come about, they had after all tried to keep her from him since the very beginning. Verona was excited however, chattering on and on about seeing France and wanting to visit the Eiffel Tower. It was a nice distraction for the male as he packed their suitcases.
The flight was a whole new experience and his already strained nerves were leaving Raphael ready to pull his hair out. If it wasn’t for the fact that flying with a four year old was a hellish experience, he was still tempted to run with Verona to Glasgow and spend the holiday with her aunt Eudora. The last time he had seen the young woman was when she dropped Verona off. They Skyped yes, but it seemed that there was a difference. The ride from the airport alongside his siblings was tense, all of them knew that the Lynch parents were going to flip when they realized what Raphael had gone and did behind their backs. The thought made him want to laugh and groan. He could practically feel the migraine already.
Raphael and Verona were the last two out of the limo, the latter in his arms as he eyed his parents coolly, daring them to say something. They didn’t, not yet. They wouldn’t want to cause a scene. “Mother, Father.” The male greeted formally, lacking the emotions most sons felt for their parents. “Meet Verona. Your granddaughter.” His arm tightened his hold on her momentarily, her head above his due to the way he was holding her.
“Daughter?” His mother questioned quietly.
“Yes. Edith Caldwell was her mother. Remember her? You’re the ones who introduced her and I.” Raphael couldn’t help the dig, the vague reminder of what they did to him and what they forced him to do. And of course, they’d know who she was, and he made sure they knew he knew about the bribery. His lips twitched into a grin when his parents mimicked each other in their nods before going inside and leaving him alone.
It was later that night after Verona was asleep that a maid showed up with a summons from his parents. “Prince Raphael, your parents would like to see you in your father’s office.” The pretty young thing spoke timidly, seemingly aware that the prince was at war with his parents. He took notice of her hands twisting together as she spoke, and refused to look him in the eye. He sighed and stood up before making his way towards the door.
“Thank you. Stay with my daughter. She’s asleep so she shouldn’t be a problem, but it’s a new place. She might have a nightmare or wake up. If she does give her a glass of warm milk and let her know I’ll be back soon.” Raphael didn’t let any of his nerves or brewing anger show in his tone, instead he made sure it was uncharacteristically warm in order to sooth the maid.
He didn’t wait for an answer and instead strode out of his rooms and began making his way towards the other end of the palace. The entire walk there he considered every move they might make, every word they might say. It was like a game of chess with them, a constant need to plan five, ten moves ahead in order to remain on top of them. It was exhausting. He knew they couldn’t take Verona from him, he had made sure of it. He attended therapy, he had a social service agent watch over weekly visits before he gained full custody and they were set to make random visits for the next six months in order to ensure he was a capable guardian. He had even gone as far to have a full background check on the agent done to make sure they couldn’t be bribed. He won this round, they just didn’t know it. But he still felt nervous.
Raphael didn’t even bother to knock on the door before walking in. He wasn’t a child anymore, he was a father and he wasn’t going to let his parents bully him anymore. He didn’t say anything as he closed the door and leaned back against the cool wood with his arms crossed over his chest. He had no plans of being the first to break the silence. He had no plans of instigating this fight. He’d let them make the first move in their game of chess.
“So, do you have anything to say for yourself, Raphael?” His father’s cold, raspy voice finally broke the silence after five minutes of staring at each other. His mother standing next to him, an equal look of displeasure focused on their son.
Raph scoffed and grinned darkly. “About what exactly? I haven’t done anything wrong.” He of course knew what they were talking about. They were expecting him to apologize, to seek their forgiveness. Like he would have done when he was a teenager eager for their approval. But he had long since left that mindset behind him.
“Your bastard of course! What woman would want to marry you when you have that child attached to your leg?” His mother was the one that spoke this time, spitting the word ‘child’ like it was some diseased parasite. Raph bristled at the comments made about Verona, but forced the anger back into the box of unwanted emotions for him to go through or ignore later.
“First of all, mother. She has a name and you will use it.” His tone was low and cold. “Second of all, I have no plans of marrying any time soon if ever. Verona is my primary focus.” It took much of his self control to keep his muscles relaxed, physically unphased.
“You will not keep her. She is to go to a new family. You will forget about her and you will find a wife.” His eyes flicked over to his father now, he had been the one who spoke this time. “You will not disgrace this family’s name any more than you already have.”
“No.” Raphael was practically vibrating with the effort to keep himself calm and collected. His single word response cut through the room like a knife, unyielding and sharp. “She is my flesh and blood. She remains with me. And just to spite you I might seriously consider never getting married.” The tone remained as his fists clenched tightly, his knuckles white from the effort. “And the only way I’ve disgraced this family is through the actions you forced upon me.”
“Forced you? What exactly did we force you to do Raphael?” A steel gleam settled over his mother’s gaze. They took great care to never actually say that they sold him, his body, out. Just shoved him into a hotel room and told him to do as he was told or he’d be disowned.
“You pimped me out. You sold me like a prostitute for money all because you couldn’t get me into a marriage contract. Three nights a week, sometimes more, you’d shove me into a hotel room and let adults prey on me, on my body and the title I was born with. I was fifteen and eager to gain your approval and you used it against me. I was innocent and naive and filled with insecurities because of my eyes and the degrading comments you always made about them around me, around your friends, degrading comments that made those contracts you wanted unattainable. I was your puppet and you were the puppeteers. Verona is the product of your choices. She only exists because of what you did to me. And Edith is dead, you can’t bribe a dead woman. Having her do that DNA test? That was the nail in the coffin, that was what made it possible for me to gain custody of my daughter.” His voice was shaking slightly towards the end, he rarely, if ever, spoke in detail of what they put him through.
“You’re an ungrateful brat. We gave you everything. You were born to greatness and you can’t even be grateful for the things you have. The power you have at your fingertips because you bear the name Lynch.” The words were thrown at him by his mother, the emotional one who was always quick to anger.
“Ungrateful?” Raphael stepped forwards, the word coming out as a snarl. “I’m ungrateful? You are fucking royalty with more money than you need and all you want is more and more. You only had as many children as you did for the money it could get you, so you could sink your poisonous claws into other countries. The only thing you gave me was a shit ton of baggage and more insecurities than a person needs. You tore me down, you sold me like cattle to the highest bidder to be used and degraded and treated as a fucking sex doll, you made me hate myself and you turned me into the closest thing a human being can be to a robot because the only way I didn’t turn to trying to kill myself was if I didn’t feel goddamn emotion. Because of you I lived on fucking autopilot for years in order to survive. You haven’t given me a goddamn thing to be grateful for outside my daughter.”
“We will cut you off. We will cast you out and disown your ass. How will you take care of her then? No college degree, no work experience, nothing but your reputation as an arrogant playboy.” The ace was laid out, the move they viewed as a checkmate played. And it made him laugh.
“No you won’t. You won’t disown me, you won’t cut me off, and you will pay for everything I need when it comes to Verona.” His smirk was back, dark and promising. He still had a move he could make, one they refused to see and acknowledge. “Because if you follow through on your threat, I have a card I can play. There is nothing I won’t do for Verona and that includes making the paparazzi’s year. I will tell everyone what you did to me. I will tell them how you forced me to have sex with strangers for money, how I went to the highest bidder and that anything went as long as it didn’t leave visible marks. I will give them the names of every single one of the clients you lined up. I will tear this family and the Lynch name down and drag it through the mud. You will likely go to jail if they manage to find proof, hell, the names I give might sell you out to get lighter sentences. After all they’d be facing statutory rape charges. Your legacy will no longer exist. Not the way you want it to.”
“You wouldn’t. You’ll never get out from under it. You’ve kept this a secret just as harshly as we have.” His father responded, the doubt clear in his tone.
“I would. And you know it. Maybe I’ll even tell them about my theory about Nesryn’s adoptive parents. I’m sure they can track the money trail back to you.” Raph threw the comment out, bluffing but they didn’t know that. “If you want me quiet, you stay out of my life, I keep my inheritance and title and you will make sure I have a steady income for Verona. Our summer home in Scotland will be signed over to me and I will live there with her when I’m not at the Estate. Eudora Caldwell, Edith’s younger sister, will be gaining a scholarship anonymously from you. You will pay for her schooling and housing. And I repeat, you will stay out of my life and out of the life of my daughter and those around me. The second you try anything and I mean anything to meddle with my life I go to the press. Goodnight.”
