Need to point some queer rage at something, white cishet persecution kink it is.

I absolutely despise this kind of cishet nonsense. And here's why-

White cishets recognize that being different is an automatic point against the rest of society. They know that marginalized groups are disqualified by the oppressors for the most basic of human experiences like finding love.

But they stop at that.

Because instead of letting that information strike a nerve they see 'a thrilling experience' to write/read about. The forbidden romance. A star crossed love doomed to be denied by all around the lovers. But, instead of including some form of marginalization like... one of them having a different skin color, being transgender, or disabled and considered incapable( incorrect) of fulfilling their half of the relationship, one of the lovers is a different species(still white and nearly human, think twilight or acotar) or this kind of rubbish where the only disqualifier for their relationship is that doctor/patient is frowned upon and can have power imbalances... not sure if it goes against the hypocratic oath, but it does have the possibility for damaging reputations..

Why make up these ridiculous reasons for a romance to be forbidden instead of taking from the laundry list of actual reasons a couple might experience aggression and refusal of acceptance?

Because they want the drama, pain, and angst that comes with marginalized romances without losing their privilege. They want "I love you, even though I know I shouldn't." But they want it without having to dismantle their own prejudices or do any work to understand that the reasons that make some romances forbidden are wrong and harmful. They don't want to admit that society is full of bigotry and prejudice, they just want dramatic romances where against all odds, the lovers come together.

I know white women who write these are often disadvantaged by being ciswomen, but it doesn't erase the fact they make up arbitrary and downright ridiculous barriers for their white het romances. It's an insult more than anything. It's someone saying "I recognize that some love is denied by the systems of power in place, but instead of accepting that I can do something about it by discussibg it, I'm going to appropriate the energy and flavor that comes with forbidden romances but with completely normal and acceptable members of society who would never experience this kind of denial. Simply because I want to read something dramatic without feeling guilty or being confronted with my own privilege."

And don't get me started on those made up slurs... like... balleraggot is disgusting. Tell me you don't understand the creation and use of slurs without telling me. Honestly... where did 'gonna make slurs that are ripped off of real and truly harmful slurs' sound like an even remotely good idea?

sometimes i think about the realness of anidala’s stories. boys much too young sent off to war; their lovers taking on the emotional burden of being their relief. i think about how padmé, as a senator, would have her own struggles and worries to face alongside stressing that her teenage husband wasn’t going to return from the frontlines. i wonder if she was able to talk about it when they met up, the same way we see her constantly listening to his ongoing turmoil— especially during the latter half of the war. or, maybe, they just sat together. two people charging head-first into different types of battles because they felt they had no other options. i have to do this.

I never for a moment interpreted the ending where Solas and Lavellan journey off into the Fade together as anything but hopeful.

The Inquisitor has been the Hero Who Saved the World for the last decade, and now she’s continuing that work. She’s not abandoning her duty. She’s venturing into the realm of pure magic to heal the Blight. Solas being there is just an enjoyable side benefit. Why can’t she save the day, get married to her true love, then head off on her next adventure? Heroes do those things all the time.

The game also is incredibly vague—and sure it’s implied they are going to the Fade Prison, which is the Black City—and Solas says it’ll be terrible… but he’s Mr. Grim and Fatalistic. Don’t listen to him. Lavellan responds that it won’t be terrible. It’s the Fade. You can shape it. It’s like the land of lucid dreaming. It will literally not be terrible if they are together. They’ll heal the Blight and help the Titans and go on many weird Fade adventures.

Again. It’s the Fade! It’s like the best sandbox for creating what comes next for them. They could totally spend all the time they’d like exploring Fade World, then return to the real world and find out only like… an afternoon has passed. Or I’m sure Dorian—after giving them a respectful amount of time for their Honeymoon—uses that magic knife to cut his way in and bring Lavellan an eluvian to use to visit him and her other friends and family whenever she wants. It’s not like they’re trapped forever. It’s left very open-ended. Have a little whimsy! Believe in true love that lasts forever and does not wane no matter the years that pass! Let them have a happily ever after. Why not. It’s fun.

Hadestown and cyclical stories stuck in the brain after watching West side story the other night and thinking about how Romeo and Juliet have a similar story. Not only of doomed lovers but of being told a thousand times, names and body’s change but the love remains.

Terrible Fic Ideas #45: Game of Thrones, but make it Reincarnation

I am a huge fan of eternal recurrence in media - the idea that all this has happened before, all this will happen again. I therefore have a tendency towards seeing patterns in works that were not perhaps intended by their authors, or, if they were, taking them to the utmost extreme.

Or: What if Jon Snow and Daenerys Stormborn are the latest incarnations of doomed Targaryen lovers?

Aka: The Aelor the Accursed Fic

Bear with me:

Prince Aelor was married to his twin sister Princess Aelora and died because of a mishap at her hand.

Before that Baelor Breakspear died of a mortal blow struck by the future King Maekor during the Tourney at Ashford Meadow.

Before that Prince Lucerys fell into Shipbreaker Bay during a fight with Prince Aemond...

...and because we know next to nothing about Aegon the Conqueror's forebears, there's no reason that, say, his ancestor Aenor the Exile couldn't be responsible for the death of his unknown great-grandmother through some mishap.

And since Game of Thrones is a world of magic, where the blood of kings can preform miracles and the dead can come back to life, there's no reason why all these tragedies can't have occurred between the same two reincarnated souls throughout history.

Or: Jon Snow is the reincarnation of Prince Aelor, Baelor Breakspear, Prince Lucerys, and Aenar's unknown wife, while Daenerys is the reincarnation of Princess Aelora, King Maekor, Prince Aemond, and Aenar the Exile.

Just imagine it:

Events proceed as per canon, but Jon and Dany are haunted in dreams by memories they shouldn't have and can't fully recall upon waking. Jon, on some level, is always afraid he will be killed by the one he loves - and believes this has come true when he's killed by brothers of the Night's Watch after narrowly escaping death at Ygritte's hand. Dany, similarly, always feels like she is responsible for the death of the ones she loves - and believes this has come true with her mother, brother, first husband, and son.

Yet these dreams become worse when they finally meet.

The War for the Dawn is fought against the backdrop of an endless series of memories - Jon and Dany growing closer and falling apart as new memories coming to the forefront.

Jon wants to trust Dany, but all his dreams tell him that he must kill her before she kills him, whereas Dany is afraid about being the death of yet another person she loves.

The revelation of Jon's parentage is tangled up in the revelation of their reincarnations.

As Jon and Dany try to reconcile all of their past lives and all of the terrible things their past lives have done to each other, they reunite the Seven Kingdoms. Even as they marry and are crowned the co-rulers of Westeros - Jon taking the dynastic name Aelor I - they're still trying to overcome the actions of their past selves.

They spend the rest of their lives trying to break the cycle, with at least three notable near-misses. They succeed in the end, but have a relationship far more fraught than bards who tell the story of their meeting make out. Later historians are baffled by the dynamic, but place it down as Targaryen oddity.

Bonuses include: 1) Jon having an instinctual knowledge of High Valyrian because of the dreams and not realizing it until the first time Maester Aemon slips into the language in his presence; 2) The inherent complication that comes from having five sets of memories - perhaps even more from before the Doom - that tell you not to trust your lover, who will destroy you even if they don't intend it, and plunge the country you've just rebuilt into war; 3) The inherent complication of having five sets of memories - perhaps even more - that tell you that you can't be trusted, that you destroy everything you touch, and will inevitably lead the country you've just rebuilt back into war; and 4) A whole host of concerned friends and family members looking at Jon and Dany's relationship from the outside and being very concerned about their strange dynamic.
