The abduction of the 287 children in Kaduna state, near the West African nation’s capital, is one of the largest school kidnappings in the decade since the kidnapping of schoolgirls in Borno state’s Chibok village in 2014 stunned the world. Analysts and activists say the security lapses that allowed that mass abduction remain.

The victims of the latest attack — among them at least 100 children aged 12 or under — were surrounded and marched into a forest just as they were starting the school day, said locals in Kuriga town, located 55 miles (89 kilometers) from the city of Kaduna. One man was shot dead as he tried to save the students, school authorities said."

The AP reports that at least 287 students were abducted – with about 100 of them aged 12 or under – making it one of the largest kidnappings since the 2014 abduction of the Chibok girls, when 275 girls were taken from their school by Boko Haram.

The parallels between the two kidnappings have created more worry for parents, as even to this day nearly 100 of the Chibok girls remain missing. 

The March 7 kidnapping saw children taken from the school just as the day was starting, at around 8 a.m.. They were herded into the forest. It took authorities several hours to respond to the scene and begin a search operation, but it is unclear how deep into the forest the kidnappers went.

Locals have suggested that the abductors belong to a group of bandits who have been terrorizing remote villages in Nigeria’s northwest and central regions.

Bishop Wilfred Anagbe of Makurdi has called on the government to intercede on behalf of the Christian population, which he said is being targeted by these attacks. Bishop Anagbe told OSV: 

“The kidnappings, killings and destroying churches we are experiencing every day are aimed at finishing Christians. We are worried that despite such killings and kidnappings, the government has never arrested anyone. As a church, we now demand that the government act quickly to stop these vices that continue to dishearten people.”

Hey y’all! Today I am going to teach you all an easy way to spot scammers. You see this ask I just got? It looks like a typical ask you may get from an actual Palestinian person who needs aid. However, there are a couple of things that give it away as a scam.

Generic, autogenerated username (these are urls that tumblr automatically suggests for you when you first sign up.) Typically a blog run by an actually Palestinian in Gaza seeking aid will have a username that seems actually thought up by a person (usually containing their name/surname, at least from what I see, but of course not always.)

They have a PayPal link and not a GFM. PayPal doesn’t work in Palestine, last I checked.

Unvetted. Now it is important to be VERY DISCERNING when it comes to unvetted GFMs/donation drives. There are less and less people who can do the actual vetting (AFAIK, that process involves someone who is actually physically there and/or can read or speak Arabic to check IDs & verify that the person is actually in Gaza and is who they say they are) so some non-scam legit GFMs are not currently vetted due to that.

Reusing pictures from other GFM posts. You can try using something like tineye or reverse image search on google to check this. DO NOTE that this is not always a sign of a scam and you must be discerning. (From what I’ve seen, sometimes posts might have a few photos in common as they are made by different members from the same family.)

EDIT: It was just brought to my attention that this scam in particular has also stolen text from a different GFM. This is also a sign of a scam.

My tip for not getting scammed? Search the person’s URL on tumblr, or check the replies/notes of their pinned post. There you will usually find other people saying if the post is a scam or not. There is also a Google doc of various vetted GFMs that I linked in a previous post.

So when you encounter a scammer, BLOCK THEM and let others know they’re a scammer! The people who actually need our help are already suffering & are humiliated by the dehumanizing positions they’ve been put in, we don’t need people trying to add on to that with scams.

Short answer, no. I don't reblog those posts, either. Majority of them are scammers, bonus scamster points if they use their race/gender as emotional manipulation. (Rant incoming cause this pissed me off, not you, but it had me thinking about a lot of shit). I'm sorry but I could never be on Tumblr begging for money, that's embarrassing, no offense. I commend anyone who's shameless enough to do that cause in all seriousness, couldn't be me. I feel like there are just some things you shouldn't do & asking strangers, half of which are minors, to give you their hard earned money in trade for nothing is one of them. posting this here so hopefully more people see it - but does anyone have any tips for making sure that palestinian fundraisers are legit? i have a lot of heartbreaking messages in my inbox, and i feel horrible sitting on them - but i don't want to accidentally post something that's a scam taking away the legitimacy of all the real people in desperate need of help (or worse, a palestinian who needs help but their fundraiser is being run by someone known to be dishonest. i've seen some truly heartless people steal donations from palestinians after promising to organize their fundraisers and it breaks my heart).

i know about reverse image searching, and the blogs of folks doing grueling work vetting fundraisers, but a lot of the usual ways you could vet things like this just do not apply here.

like, seeing if it's an empty or brand new account, or if the post "reads well" (ie: is it churned out by AI) for example. those are usually decent indicators of a bot/scam on this site. but when this is a relatively recent and constantly evolving crisis that's given people who may not speak native (or any) english no choice but to make accounts just to ask for help? that obviously does not apply here.

i want to be clear: i'm not reporting anyone for not having perfect grammar or saying that because scammers exist no one should donate at all. it feels disgusting to doubt these messages, but the last thing i want to do is cause someone who is in dire need of help to not get a donation because i inadvertently redirected people to donate money to a grift/scam.
