hello, hello, hello, hello to all my lovely people out there. i wanna start of by saying happy valentines to every single one of you. whether you're single, in a relationship, or have just broken up, i hope you all enjoy this amazing day of love and share it with their loved ones.

today's not just about a romantic partner, but to people who you just love. tell your family how much you love and appreciate them for all they've done for you and if that's not an option, share your gratitude with your friends or people who have constantly been there for you and have made you feel loved.

do something kind for someone. give them a hug, write them a letter, compliment them, whatever. you don't have to make some big gesture or go all out, just let someone know you appreciate them.

but most importantly, make sure you love yourself. self love is just as, if not more, important than anything else. how are you supposed to put in your time and effort in loving someone else if you can't do that for yourself? so whether you want to go out and spoil yourself or stay in and take a nice bath and watch movies, make sure you're putting your love for yourself first.

but, loving yourself isn't just about spa days and self care (but like that shit's like amazing so like i definitely recommend a nice everything shower if you're not doing anything today.....) it's also about speaking to yourself kindly, forgiving yourself for past mistakes, and acknowledging that you deserve just as much love as everyone else on this amazing day!

One of the things that people have consistently failed to internalize about Trump as a phenomenon is that all the things people hate are the things people love. That is the appeal.

When you complain about how everything he is doing is wrong, you are telling them that it's working. Every time you point out a hypocrisy or an abuse of power or decency, you are adding fuel to the fire.

As we careen through 2.0, it is important to bear in mind that collectively, this administration is about revenge. It is revenge for the pandemic, it's revenge for 2020, it's revenge for pronouns, etc. Take a brief sampling of the "cry harder" memes. Oh you think the corruption is bad? You think Trump's cronies have conflicts of interest? What about Anthony Fauci? What about the ATF? What about the 2020 election? What about, what about, what about? Cry harder.

Advertising that they are hurting people is advertising that they are doing the right thing and should continue doing it, because hurting people is the point. Complaining about the hurt, complaining about the stress, this tells them the process is working, and has to continue.

Because they want to hurt people who are not on their team.* It is not a byproduct, it is a positive feature. It is the purpose.

And sure, there are a few people who will say, oh, no, this is so dramatic, he is just joking, you are taking it too seriously, relax, relax.

The thing about that is, it's partly true. The media has always been committed to painting everything the administration does in the worst most lurid light possible. And we cannot pretend that the left-of-center, writ large, is innocent. And Trump, on balance, has been probably the funniest politician in American history. We know he has a sense of humor.

But when they tell you he's just joking and you need to relax and it's all an exaggeration, it is important to remember that what they are telling you is to trust him, as they trust him. Trust that he won't do the thing he said he would do, because when he said that, that part was a joke. Trust the scary parts are jokes. Trust that he and his team are doing the right thing. Believe, as they believe.

That is a tall ask.

Now you may ask, well, now what? Honestly, as far as I can tell the answer is nothing, it's too late. Every time anyone has had a chance to pause or walk back they've doubled down. We've played all our cards. Save what you can, and think about the kinds of values you want your children to have and how you will raise them because this generation is set on its trajectory.

*but what do you mean by hurt?

I honestly think this is a huge variable. I think many or even most Republicans for whom this is appealing genuinely think that they do something and there is some bluehaired undertcut she/they who is coping and seething sooo hard and crying about it and then just walks off the stage, having completed the performance of being "owned" in their imagination. That is to say I seriously doubt that they think there are any real world consequences to anything that they do. Cutting off foreign aid, firing millions of government employees, I think these are just fake numbers, all calculated to anger that she/they who they have pictured in their mind.

Generally speaking they regard emotional distress about things they don't value as temper tantrums that exist on a spectrum of amusing to annoying.

That is to say I do think a lot of them honestly think that everything about all this is fundamentally harmless. It's not really hurting anyone in a meaningful way, at least not anyone important.

I don't know how you'd break through that.

Some of them are definitely malevolent, but as always it's hard to know how many or to what degree.

Things I love about the silt verses fandom:

- The way everyone uses the phrase ‘Joe Biden Sex Coma,’ and that everyone knows exactly what you’re talking about

- After Jon Ware called Faulkner “Dick Faulkner the rat bastard” we all followed suit

- In the same vein the usage of ‘Brother Fratricide’

- The usage of the phrase ‘crab nuke’

- Silt verses fans genuinely talk like cultists, like everyone is constantly saying repetitive mantras and prayers from the show. One person says “the river rises” the rest follow. I’ve sat in a call with someone who quietly started chanting “There’s them that lead and them that chase, there’s them that lead-“ and I love that.

- Saying “the last word told me” instead of “because I say so”

I saw it in your tag game post that you're also fond of the Apollo-Heracles conflict 👀 for a myth that appears in only a couple of sources, it sure has a lot of presence in the vase paintings (no seriously, everytime I think I've seen the last of it, I find ten more)

I also think it's extremely interesting that it's a story so popularly portrayed by vase paintings and in such a variety of ways!! It's certainly one of the stories that gets left out of written compilation of Heracles' legend a bit (which is a shame, I think it's a fantastic story) but Apollo had a very peculiar relationship with Heracles in general that I just kind of find amazing (and very, very funny).

Apollo is not a god with any legitimate grudge against Heracles, but he does argue with the mortal a bit like he argues with his favourite brothers 😂Part of why I love the story of Apollo and Heracles fighting over the tripod so much is that it is such a little brother thing for Heracles to be upset with the proclamation his elder brother has given him and so, he throws a great fit, taking up the chair and declaring that he'll just give himself a better prophecy! And Apollo, instead of being a marginally professional big brother, decides to fight him for it until their father has to break up their cat-fight. Like was that not just the plot of the Homeric Hymn to Hermes? Is this not exactly how Apollo treated Hermes when he was a child and now those two are inseparable? 💀

Because of this, my favourite vase paintings tend to be the ones that highlight the personal squabbling between Apollo and Heracles the most. There are some very elaborate ones that have the full host of them - Athena, Heracles, Apollo, Artemis, usually a dog and a doe, I've even seen a couple that had birds and plants etched on them, but the simplest ones that show Heracles about to bonk Apollo with his club out of frustration or depict Heracles nyooming away from Apollo while Apollo (presumably) yells curses about how he's going to fling Heracles head first into Tartarus for daring to take his things? Yeah, those are the premium big brother/little brother things I'm looking for.

i don’t think i’ll ever move on from how mtz and red dwarf are just. the same shows. they’re about a little group of people in space who are so bad at their jobs and/or do not do their jobs. they’re all always fighting but love each other more than anything. the protagonist is a purposeful subversion of your usual sci-fi protagonist by making him kind of so pathetic to varying degrees. his best friend is either a robot or arguably a robot and also they’re kind of ridiculously gay for each other despite having one sided beef that grows into absolute best friendship. i could write essays on how rimmer and lister are like if pleck and c-53 swapped roles and personalities. rimmer IS nermut if you put them in a room together they’d leave several hours later not shutting up about how they finally met someone who was On Their Level who UNDERSTOOD and APPRECIATED their career goals. one time nermut was very clearly about to get executed but he was COMPLETELY convinced he was getting a promotion—this would happen to rimmer. holly and bargie? okay sentient ship/ship ai nation. they’re both about The Horrors and how important it is to find love for life and for the people around you to get through it. this list does continue i’ve been thinking about this for months. these are the same shows in different fonts and it’s beautiful.

you know what’s insane though. mtz parodies basically every popular piece of sci-fi media in existence and yet there is not a Single red dwarf reference in here. if any of the cast had watched red dwarf there WOULD be a reference somewhere.
