I haven't been able to stop thinking about Rainbow Color Inkantation because oh my god this song is so damn hype and cool.

Like... okay, it's not the best Calamari Inkantation we've gotten but it's still incredibly good, at least in my opinion I think its good. 3Mix still beats it in my mind but this song is a STRONG second place.

This song perfectly captures Splatoon 3 to me, it's chaotic, loud, in your face, it celebrates the past, acknowledges the present and has a futuristic edge.

It's so damn blood pumping and adrenaline inducing as each Idol battles for attention and control. It's what you want in a song that's used for the final day of the Grand Festival. It's literally NOW OR NEVER! GO! GO! GO! THIS IS IT!!!

The Idol specific parts when you get the Ultra Signals are my favourite sections of the song, it's SOOOO GOOOOOOODDDDD!!!!! UGHHHH!!!!!! The Squid Sister's section is so sweet, happy and cute as they play the song that they were announced with 9 years ago. Further cementing that their arcs from Splatoon 1 have been finally completed. They sing together in this incredibly harmonized way... It's... it's beautiful...

Off the Hook's section feels so hopeful and inspirational, it feels like Pearl and Marina are just singing to each other and expressing their love for each other... I can imagine Marina hugging Pearl and spinning her around as they sing Ebb & Flow...

Deep Cut's part is pure fucking hype! I LOVE ITTTTT!!!!!!!! I love how they sing something completely original it's so sick man. THEIR CHEERS AND "HA! HA! HA!" So good oh my friggen god bro. Just like the team they represented, their section gives me hope that these three cheeky bandits will continue on and keep making bangers.

I wish i was an expert in music to better explain why i really like this song but alas, i ain't no Anthony Fantano....

I also wanna end off by talking about the final 10 seconds...

Oh. My God. Out of all of the Now or Nevers we've had, those final 10 seconds is my favorite ending to a Now or Never like song... EVER! It just pumps you with so much adrenaline, it's like the song stabbed you with 2 EpiPens in your ear drums. It's so anxiety inducing that you could make a crowd at a rave faint right there and then.

Seriously, go listen to the full 7 minute version of the song if you haven't already, it's pure magic i tell you.

Also, i headcanon that these three helped with the production of the song.

Some of parts of the song reminded me a lot of DJ Octavio's signature style and i think it would be cute if him, Captain 3 and Acht helped with the production of the song.

I find the arrangement of the tracks on Disc 4 Side A "Bonus DLC Tracks" in the Dragon Age OST vinyl interesting. it's called "Bonus DLC Tracks" but the first track it features is "I Am The One (Dark Fantasy Version)", which isn't from DLC, it's from basegame DA:O, and ofc the last track is new. this disc is the only one of the discs to include songs from multiple games (and not even just two, but three: DA:O, DA:I and DA:D, assuming that "D'Read Koda" is from or tied to DA:D). and the order the Trespasser tracks are included in is different to the order they appear in on the Trespasser OST, at least going by the Trevor Morris album (on there it's Dark Solas Theme, Lost Elf Theme, Qunari Atmosphere). I wanna say that the way it was arranged was intentional, like the specific arrangement of the tracks on this disc is like hinting at telling a sort of a story or a tease. he's lost, and then things come to an end (his story and.. something else?). a passage of music that brings the music to a close (coda), that brings a piece or movement to an end. I think of when Flemythal said

Alas, so long as the music plays, we dance.

and when Solas said

 I walk the dinan'shiral. There is only death on this journey. [death is an end, and it can be a metaphor for the end of something too]

my eye is also drawn to:

especially since there's a different version of I Am The One ("High fantasy version") that could have gone in there instead (which as the second song on the DA:O OST, the high fantasy version is more of a 'where this all began' song).

the idea that "I Am The One" is about Solas/Fen'Harel and what happened in ancient Elvhenan (and what his intention is in the future) is a common fan theory, and not a new one. [link to English translation of the lyrics] the lyrics could be applied to a lot of things, or nothing at all, but back then there was a war (both within the Evanuris and one they fought before that), a divide between the gods, the sky was held back/there was great destruction when the Veil was raised (but despite that there was a flicker of hope in that the elves were freed from the Evanuris), the nature of time for the ancient elves was changed (elven immortality/mortality), he references the potential for the world now to burn in the raw chaos if he succeeds, In Your Heart Shall Burn/From The Ashes etc. he ended up being one of the only survivors who lived on from the event and fears dying alone, is one of the only elves in modern Thedas who remembers, he's asked for and turned to for guidance at various points (Lasa ghilan / Ma ghilana mir din'an / Ma ghilana, vhenan / Fen'Harel ma ghilana), he believes he's the only one who can fix it now in the modern day, etc.

listening again to D'Read Koda, the echo-y, pulsing aspect and how it rises to a crescendo reminds me of the music in the Dread Wolf Rises teaser (which is still such a banger). and the discordant notes remind me of the same here and here in the 2020 trailer music. the 'discordant note' hook is also present here in the in-game cinematic (also at the start and throughout it sort of underpinning it), and the general ominous atmosphere of the 'koda' also echoes that of the various bits of music we've heard in trailers and the in-game cinematic before.

anyways, since I don't have a vinyl player I made the tracks as a lil playlist for myself on Spotify and have been listening to that then playing one of the videos with the D'Read Koda audio in it (since ofc it isn't on Spotify rn) to have the same effect, and it's interesting.

a detailed explanation of every anime ive ever watched bc i feel like it

first of all no hate to ppl who like the stuff i trashed on here, same goes for ppl disliking the things i glazed. technically my first anime was pokemon -but thats everyone's first so ill be brief. my fav series was pokemon black & white, xy and xyz were pretty good but nothing compared to b&w.

as a kid i also loved glitter force and lolirock! not much to say i jst love cartoons. ok real post time:

in 4th grade i was really into animation story time youtubers; especially wolfichu. i NEEDED to have her artstyle. so around that time she among others had mentioned in passing tokyo mew mew, so i found a dub of it on youtube.

tokyo mew mew was okay, i wasnt invested in it i juast watched it to be more like wolfichu. i barely got like 5-10 eps in before i forgot ab it and moved on; deciding i would simply not like anime and draw in an anime artsyle in harmony.

and so i didnt watch anime for the next 2 years. i think i told people i did to be cool(i was not cool) but alas, i was a poser. in 7th grade i was online way more and saw ppl talking about anime a lot, so i made a big list of all the ones people told me to watch and decided i would watch them in the summer of 2021

a bit before summer my bff recommended i watch a silent voice. i really liked it, not much to say, its p fuckin good! i really like Shoko's design.

okay summer time-- first on the watch list was the promised neverland; i got though it in a day and felt mildly positive towards it. it was interesting when i connected it to my favorite comic at the time (space boy) but i didnt wanna rewatch.

then there was mha. my bff really liked it at the time so i did have motivation to watch it- but i felt nothing twords the plot and characters. i watched the first 3 seasons but i rember none of it bc i was so distracted and bord the whole time. no hate to mha fans!! i really wanted to get into it; but i once again came to the conclusion i am not a person who likes anime.

i focused on watching other cartoons for a while but my bff got really into attack on titan; so i said over and over i would watch it but never actually did. technically this doesnt count but i know the whole plot form he sending well structured wikipedia esc infodumps about it. so im mentioning it, sue me i dare you.

i also watched the first season of saki k. it wasnt outstanding but it was funny enough.

a good bit into 2022 i saw people on tiktok talking about watamote, it seemed interesting enough, so i watched it. i liked it more then any anime id seen before(spare a silent voice and pokemon). it wasnt really an interest, i had no further thoughts about it, it was pretty funny and the ending song is a fucking banger witch is still on all my playlists!

durring 8th grade i was also forced by my friend-at-the-time to watch komi cant communicate. now, at first i was told to watch the sub(as the dub wasn't out yet). i dont watch subs. i cant watch them at all, i read slow and there is no enjoyment for me and i dont care about the voice acting i need it out loud. but as mentioned komi had no dub for a while so i sat though the first ep and then gave up. months later; dub was out and i watched it. it was fineeee. standered. it was what i expected; i didnt really like it but i didnt hate it. i was just a person who didnt like anime. no changing that.

until-

around the end of my 8th grade year or beginning of my freshman year i saw someone on tiktok talking about school live club! it sounded really interesting so i watched it- and oh my god. i loved it. to this day i love it. SPOILERS!!: the other girls playing into Yukis delusions for their own peace of mind was fascinating. every characters personal story-- the twist with Megumi-- the depiction of ptsd with Kurumi-- the ending--- i loved it.

so naturally, i assumed it was one of a kind and i simply was not a person who liked anime.

during my freshman year i watched madoka magica. i was recommended it by a friend and it statemented itself as the second anime i turly loved. after madoka i started looking for anime i like again

bloom into you hit me on a personal level, it was like a truck that hit my face saying "hey, this is a kinda relationship that is possible", witch as of me figuring out im aroace has been more relivent to me then ever. i have trouble loving people so the idea of somone wanting a relationship because ill never romantically love them is smth i hope for- but obvi might not happen i just like that its possible.

summer before 10th grade-- i was at my fist con and decided if i couldn't find anything to buy i would at least network. i met a really cool artist and chatted with her for a while. she had a keychain i thought was cute so i asked her what it was from. thus my introduction to bochi the rock! and god, it i really wanted to like bochi. i loved guitar and wanted to learn it; i loved her design; the premise want miserably boring; i wanted to like it! but there was no dub, and god i cannot watch subs, its pathetic but i had to drop it.

during the first semester of my junior year i was still working on the future is blue. i mention this because apon seeing an anime with almost the same premise as my comic, i had to watch it. a lull in the sea was an interesting premise for sure, but i never actually finished it. the seris main theme is fish people face xenophobia, but what stuck out to me most was a pattern i noticed with how people treated the heroin. (this is from memory so i might get stuff wrong) i had BEEF with that way Manaka was constantly infanatalized by her friends. the main character constantly treats her like an idiot who is hopless without him. when she comes home crying after being cat-called by some old pos she is told shes being dramatic. like, no wonder she got close with the fisher boy so quickly, HES NICE TO HER!! still id rewatch it in theory if i have time.

and then there was talentless nana. the game changer.

The story of the phantom from Goosebumps the musical - Phantom of the auditorium (first on the list). An enchanting (but wrong) retelling of Phantom of the opera. I know nothing of the rest of this musical, but the female singer is sooooo good.

Uppstånden from Det största påskÄgget (Risen from The largest Easter Egg). A Swedish musical about the origins of the Christian Easter. This song specifically is about when the deciples has learnt that Jesus rose from the dead. This song has banger lyrics and the key change towards the end elevates it all.

A story told from The count of Monte Cristo - the musical. The villains conspire to frame the main character for crimes he didn't commit. We love a good villain song <3

Off with his shirt from Galavant. I don't really know what's going on but I think the main character has been trapped in a gay bar?? A bop though!

The megaSIX from SIX. The end of the musical were all the wives of Henry xiii has united in one final song about their legacy with a mashup of their solos. High energy throughout despite heavy subject matters

You didn't know from Hazbin hotel. The main character learns that the heavenly angels are behind much of the troubles in hell (I think??) Honestly I had severely misheard some lyrics that made me rethink the song once I heard them correctly, and I don't think it's as good now :(( I didn't know... ;)

Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A man after midnight) from Mamma Mia the movie. This movie is so feelgood, and i think this song takes place at the party the night before the wedding. A banger!

Dead girl walking from Heathers the musical. Veronica, main character, hooks up with new bad boy in town JD. This will surely not have dire consequences for her classmates...

Cabinet battle #1 from Hamilton. Hamilton discusses politics in the newly formed us government. The piano slaps.

Från New York till Stillwater from Kristina från Duvemåla (From New York to Stillwater from Kristina from Duvemåla). This song is legit quite boring, legit a quick retelling from a side character of the main characters going from a to b. I would've preferred the second song from this musical on the playlist (A Sunday in Battery Park) to be the highest of the two because it's a more interesting and honestly a song I prefer over this one. But alas. This song is quite introspective and actually a bit frightful of the unknown that awaits them. We love a Danjel solo though!

Devil take the hindmost (Quartet) from Love never dies. The phantom, Raoul and madame Giry wonder if Christine will take the Phantom's deal while Gustave vocalises. This musical sucks <3 but the way their verses twine together just tickles the brain.

Lady marmalade - Thunderpuss Radio Mix from Moulin Rouge. It's a remix from the credits of the movie. It's so fast-paced and chaotic in a good way.

God Games from Epic the musical. Athena beseeches Zeus to help Odysseus from the island he's imprisoned on, and he challenges her to convince other gods to join her cause. The singers for both Athena and Zeus are just absolute power houses and their parts is highlights of the entire musical, and to have them both in a single song is a treat. I also enjoy how the song changes with the different gods' appearances.

Revenge party from Mean girls the musical. Janice, Damien and Cady plots the downfall of Regina. Janice is so extra and hyperbolic which makes for a funny and up beat song.

You can't stop the beat from Hairspray. It's just a good group song.

Madame guillotine from The scarlet pimpernel. The citizens of Paris sings of their new favourite execution method. It's a good ensemble song.

Den vej jeg går from Robin Hood (Eventyrteatret). (The road I walk from Robin Hood (the adventure theatre)). Two siblings argue over who has chosen the right path. Idk much because it's in danish but it's good.

Down once more/Track down this murderer from The Phantom of the opera. The bombastic end to a grand musical. The phantom, Christine and Raoul face off in the Phantom's lair. The parts were they sing over eachother are so good, the emotions are high and both lyrics, voices and orchestra just build it all up perfectly.

Gethsemane (I only want to say) from Jesus Christ superstar. Jesus laments his coming death, begging God to save him from this burden. The WHY SHOULD I DIE??! is truly legendary.

There! Right there! from Legally blonde the musical. Elle makes her first victory in court due to her amazing gay-dar. This song is so wonderfully mid 00s

Legendary from Bring it on the musical. It's showtime and the troupe gotta show what they're made off. I've never seen the musical or the movie it's based off so I'm not really sure what's happening. But it sounds Legendary.

Hopelessly devoted to you from Grease. Sandy laments her crush, that isn't what he seemed this past summer. The instrumentals when she sings "But now ... There's nowhere to hide!" are phenomenal.

Matthew -> The only one of the 5 that I think would be an actual Swiftie beyond casually liking some songs. I think he's definitely a 1989 girlie (gender neutral). This is because I think he'd primarily like "dancey" songs - Style, Shake It Off, I Wish You Would, How You Get the Girl, Now That We Don't Talk, Is It Over Now... that vibe. Definitely a big ol' fan of Blank Space, too. I think he'd also really like Reputation (TIWWCHNT, LWYMMD, and I Did Something Bad would be God-tier to him) and Midnights (his relationship with YOYOK would need to be studied.) So yeah. He'd probably like all of her songs, though, from different eras, and listen to them depending on his mood.

Cordelia -> I think that she has a really strong relationship with Don't Blame Me. Like, her #1 most streamed song on every platform. Besides that, she vibes Getaway Car, Delicate, Sparks Fly, I Can See You, Mary's Song (because uh. Her and James), Paper Rings, Cornelia Street, and Lover. You Are In Love as well. She's a fan of The Ballads in all their forms, whether they're poppy or calming.

James -> I feel like he mostly will vibe anything that Cordelia or Matthew are listening to. He's not, like, a Swiftie who listens to them on his own, but he doesn't mind when the others play her music. His favorites would be Dear Reader, Don't Blame Me, You Are In Love, Cold As You (he likes the emotional moping vibes), High Infidelity (again. Emo.), and maybe like, Innocent.

Alastair -> Alastair was unfortunately not born with the Taylor Swift Enjoyer Gene. Alas. Bad things sometimes happen to good people. But he does really like a few of the Folkmore songs, and he puts them on his playlists - he has pretty wide music tastes and listens to select songs from tons of artists, so his playlists are expansive. I think his faves are My Tears Ricochet, Peace, Hoax, Tis the Damn Season, Tolerate It, Ivy, Closure, and It's Time to Go. But he definitely has screamed to WCS more than once too when he's emotional about Charles.

Thomas -> A Fearless girlie (gender neutral) to his core. Every song is a bop or a banger to him. But I think his favorite is Hey Stephen solely because it reminds him of how he felt about Alastair. Also because it's my favourite and I like to self-indulge. Other Fearless faves are Tell Me Why, Forever and Always, Love Story, The Other Side of the Door, and Today Was a Fairytale. His #2 album? Lover. His faves are I Think He Knows, Miss Americana, and the much-underrated INTHAF.

Another funny headcanon is that Cordelia tries to be a Good Ally and defend her loved ones against Homophobic Picture to Burn, but like every queer person ever made Matthew, Alastair, and Thomas think Homophobic Picture to Burn is hilarious and real. They're head-banging to it in the car (Matthew got the aux cord as usual) and she's Shook.

10 NEW SONGS - 4/14/24

It’s become clear that when you’re not completely ignoring your whole ass job, writing a whole ass article becomes much more difficult - who knew! Still aiming to get these out every week, just might not be a Friday / same day situation. Alas.

1. Hold Up - Sasha Keable

Sasha Keable has quietly dropped some gems in the past 4 to 5 years (I was shocked to discover that she’s the featured artist on Disclosure’s “Voices”, a song I've adored for years), but this single might be her best release to date. She confidently sings here over jazzy, electronic keyboard chords, giving us some modern … dare I say … Amy Winehouse vibes? At the very least, she sounds more like Amy than whatever the fuck is happening with this Back to Black movie.

2. Illusion - Dua Lipa

This sounds like early Dua, and I mean that in the best way possible. She’s been getting a weird amount of hate in the pop world - I think it’s hard to follow an album as incredible as Future Nostalgia, but none of these songs are bad at all. Leave her be!

3. The Kill - Maggie Rogers

A clear highlight from a really strong album in Don’t Forget Me, I fuckin’ love this. Her harmonies here are top notch, and the upbeat country / folk vibe she has going works so well with her voice and songwriting. This song is so good that I actually looked up tickets to her Milwaukee show in the middle of typing out this blurb.

4. Espresso - Sabrina Carpenter

Just a fun little girly-bop bop with bonus track vibes - I think she put this out for Coachella promo? Regardless, happy to add this to the library. 

5. Nasty - Tinashe

Tinashe has quietly released some bangers since she blew up back in the day with 2 On - add this one to the list. I would go feral if I heard this drunk in a bar. I will go feral when I pay way too much to hear it at a bar via TouchTunes.

6. Player Two - Jordan Ward

Jordan Ward doesn’t miss and this is catchy as hell. Looks like it’s going to be featured in a movie I’ve never heard of based on the title - interesting. It kind of sounds like a cross between disco, yacht rock, and R&B.

7. Ash Roth! - Asher Roth

I was a MASSIVE Asher Roth fan back in the day, so I was thrilled to see that he dropped a new album this weekend. This was a clear highlight for me, as Asher introspectively reflects on himself and his career over a laid back beat, reminiscent of his Pabst & Jazz era. Dude can really rap and I’ve always said that. I’m also realizing now that he’s released multiple albums since 2020 that I never listened to, so that’s a rabbit hole I will absolutely be going down in the near future. At one point, a video existed on the internet of Asher Roth singing "Just Friends" by Musiq Soulchild live on stage, and while I can no longer locate this video, seeing that told me everything I needed to know about Asher Roth. I'll bet you had no idea I had this much to say about Asher Roth. I can't even explain it, I surprise myself too.

8. TWUG (That’s What U Get) - Jean Deaux

A great R&B beat and a solid vocal performance from Jean Deaux. I always find myself wanting more from her projects when I listen through, but she’s released great individual songs over the years. 

9. magic - strongboi

Knew literally nothing about them before writing this but have since discovered that strongboi = Alice Phoebe Lou + a producer / collaborator? Alice Phoebe Lou fucking rocks, as does this song! Slayyy, niche indie queen. This sounds like a breezy summer day and I'm loving every second of it.

10. How? - Dhruv

Another artist I know very little about, but my god, Dhruv has a beautiful voice. I could listen to this man sing all day.

BUT DONE WELL! However, this song is very forgettable…..

Body by Highlight: they said "SHAKE YOU BODY YOU BODY YOUR BODY YOUR BODY RIGHT" and I DID! I like this song it feels like summer. However. The whistling in the chorus makes me wanna rip my hair out. I fr thought we left that back in the 2010s, alas.

Do Doom Chit by VVUP: do doom chit is actually a bit of a banger… ngl at first I was like "what." but she grew on me and with a QUICKNESS.

FRI(END)S by V: V come through w/ the vocals king!!!! This song is so cute and should have been a valentines day release. It's short, yes, but I don't think it needs to be more than it is. I do wish this wasn't a single though… this belongs as an interlude on a full length album sry!!!! Also reminds me of the 70s pop that spencer sutherland has on his music. Heyuyyy what a thought

HEYDAY by XODIAC: this would've gone triple platinum in my room circa 2017… Like with Lighthouse we need more of this concept well-executed. And for my ballad lovers out there WONDERFUL TONIGHT off the same mini is for you!!!!

Fresh by Daniel Jikal: Wish there were more variation his his flow and wasn't so predictable. There's nothing special here but there is always way to improve. This feels very… the mediocre 2018 rappers who were popping up all over the place. And that's okay!

Lucky by Hori7on: These nugu groups be working their asses off and when they do they make absolute bangers like this. I am not a fan of whistling but it actually accompanies the production well. Lucky and Body are brothers in arms fr. THE CHORUS BANGS SO HARD I CAN'T LIEEE. Even the chant hook is nice like, the composers/producers/arrangers were in their bag man. I can get over the whistles fr. This is like AJU NICE but for 5th gen.

Nectar by THE BOYZ: Boy groups this month decided to give us soft nostalgia pop BANGERS and ofc THE BOYZ did not disappoint. I love this trend, MORE PLEASE!!! Btw if you like this song you'll like HEYDAY and Lighthouse for sure….

BBB by Purple Kiss: The girls will always slay with their vocals and songs, but that chorus is… not it madames. Catchy as hell but man, when you got a song like Sweet Juice it's really fucking hard to keep it up. unfortunately this was a miss from them….

Rooftop by YooA: Yeah… she slayed. I know nothing about YooA or much about OH MY GIRL but she came out and did her little thing with this one. It's not a song i'll be playlisting but she did do her thing fr.

Fuego by THE NEW SIX: She had to grow on me. She is still trying to grow on me. She is not growing much admittedly. The rap after the first chorus barely salvages it for me. I think I've just listened too much to songs like this before and I'm tired of it. By no means is it bad just not for me, and that's okay.

12. Smoothie by NCT Dream: this song is just uh… very…. well 🤷🏾‍♀️ They did release it as their title!

Chungha did NOT have to kill us with I'm Ready and she did not have to bury us in the grave with EENIE MEENIE not only is the song catchy as fuck w/ fun production omfg…. the hongjoong feature set it from awesome to SPECTACULAR bc that rap is soooo mind melting in how good it is delivered and 2 the flow is insane.

Good Girl by Candy Shop: The beat switch in at the end of the pre-choruses should have been kept for the chorus but they didn't?!?! literally why and what the fuck it would have ELEVATED the song so much. But this is classic alt/contemporary rnb. The modulation in the song is well-done and keeps it interesting but and they finally kept the beat for the end, at least. But why give us a taste of heaven to just go back into the regular chorus ahhhhhh.

And what comes to brief encounter… I absolutely love that fic. It’s so hot (so so so hot) and so wrong and some a+++ drarry and hinny dynamics. You’re going to have a good fucking time reading it I promise, although I have to admit that my idea of a good time might not be what other people think of a good time lol. I don’t want to spoil it, but my doors are always open for some emotional support 😌😌 that last sex scene will haunt me to my grave. Un-fucking-believable. I’m in tears just thinking about it.

Also Bound Skerry is one of those fics that I read and just sat silently for a while after, I love Frayach’s stories so much, they have some real fucking bangers especially in the infidelity department. But everything they’ve written just slap so hard 🥵

“anansi boys” by neil gaiman

maaaaaaaaaan, you guys. MAN. people who are bored by this book, idgi, not sure what you need but i LOVED this book so, so, so much. yeah some parts were predictable but it didn’t take aware from the overall thrill and enjoyment of the story, for me. i wanna say this is my favorite book i’ve read all year, but dang i look back at this blog and remember i’ve read some bangers this year. they haven’t all been winners but a lot of them have been sooooo good.

anyway, anansi boys. shoooooot. i just love this universe that mr. gaiman has created, the narration by lenny henry is spectacular and the little tropical sounds occasionally between major scenes was magical. this story really pulled me in, definitely my favorite kind of story because it wasn’t whether or not the plot was predictable or the characters were “likeable,” i was simply invested in what happens next. from the start, the rift between fat charlie and his dad is enough to pull in any reader, i would think, but alas it doesn’t work for everyone i guess. i also am obsessed with stories that address storytelling and neil gaiman has done this in such a suave, smooth way it’s incredible. i can’t say enough about how well written this is, i feel like i probably missed some things especially at the beginning and that makes this story definitely worth revisiting.

from what little i know about anansi the storytelling trickster spider god, it appears neil gaiman did his research and like in american gods, he was really able to respectfully tie a bunch of the lore together to make one cohesive story with the characters without stepping on any toes. i also just read that anansi appeared in the 2003 marvel comic for the amazing spider-man in which it’s revealed that anansi was the first spider-man. so you have great storytelling, numerous locations for setting, a music theme, a heritage/family line theme, ANTHROPOMORPHISM, and then sprinkle in a little hint of a marvel connection too? get outta here. loved this book so much.

i can’t wait to read it again and if you haven’t read it, i’m jealous that you have the ability to read it for the first time. apparently a series is in the works, i hope they do it justice like they did with american gods, but idk as usual i’m a bit skeptical because they will inevitably change some things. either way, the book is right there and is magical.

rating: 10/10 this deeply resonated with me, i will re-read it again numerous times and recommend it to anyone i know, the story and characters will stick with me forever; crave discussing it all the time and bring it up unprovoked

OKAY FIRST OF ALL TECHNICALLY SPEAKING?

it's a webcomic except not really. the way it's written is heavily based on old text-based adventure games, with a few panels with art and everything else written underneath, either from the point of view of a narrator or with chatlogues/dialogues of the main characters the comic also has some animation (or "flashes"), some occasional minigames and RPG-like games and songs, some of which made by toby fox

and yes i'd argue that a lot of things in HS aged poorly or weren't well written from the very start but the songs are literally all bangers. like even if you don't follow homestuck i cant not recommend the songs a LOT of stuff was really a product of its time too. like there's a lot of lolrandom humor, occasional jokes that would likely not fly rn that while can be excused with "these are 13 years olds and also like all them is canonically dealing with internalized homophobia, undiagnosed mental health issues or both" some parts really aged like milk

the entire plot is divided in 7 acts, with sub-acts and intermissions between each one of them to "divide" the story in chapters. like the first one is all "outside" the game the, the second introduces more characters, act 5 is the best one, act 7 is only the final flash to conclude the entire story

...and yes okay the story is, again, about a kid and his friends and a game they play together. basically on the 13th of April 2009 best boy John becomes 13 years old and recieves a game to play with his pals. It's a game that literally alters reality and that, once an item in the game is activated, summons a meteor. just roll with it this is how this universe works. "oh the gang needs to save the world then?" nah lmao the world is literally doomed their goal is to reach worlds spawned from the game, become gods, defeat the final boss and create a new universe

of course however things dont go as planned :)

all of this is explained approximately 1% into the whole story by the way

other than this, the kids are also dealing with a bunch of trolls from another world (the candy corn zodiac dudes), a bunch of NPCs from the game, alternate timelines, the literal goddamn author and lots and lots of death. Like HS is kinda infamous for killing of characters left and right. It has it's own set of rules to keep most of them relevant, like introducing ghosts, "dream" selves, the alternate timelines (Dave especially is SUCH a fun time he gets time-related powers and he gets to see SO many version of him dying :) ) or the whole way death works once the characters become gods, in which they can die only if their death is "just" (so if they were fucked up and evil and their death was justified") or "heroic" (so if they sacrifice themselves to protect someone, basically)

and. yes again homestuck isn't a story to take lightly, reading it requires a LOT of critical thinking, but it honestly has some of the best written kid protagonists I've ever read? Like with some duds of course *cough*gamzee*cough*act6vriska*cough*calliope*cough*, but most of them are really well fleshed out, with lots of flaws and good qualities, funny as hell, and for most of them their traumas and problems are integral part of their character growth - and yes while you get kind of used to see them die over and over have some of them Actually Die is. genuinely shocking and hurts so much?

like again shoutout to Dave but also Karkat because they start off as the "cool kid" and "angry kid" tropes and yet they get so much growth, learning to understand their limits and rationalizing traumas from the past. like the very last scene we get with Dave before the final battle is one of the best written pieces of media I've ever read

First of all pull a death of the author since they're kind of a douchebag and also remember that this started in 2009, likely with no intentions of making it a story as big as it ended up being. I don't think I would recommend HS to someone who "wasn't there" not for gatekeeping but specifically because. It's a product of it's time, and I think that if you finish Act 1 (in which basically nothing important happens, if not putting down the bases of the general tone) and aren't into it you likely won't likei t even when it gets so much better since

yes it's a story with very serious topics that WILL take seriously it's characters, but it's also a story that not only would drop everything from a page to another because the author decided to commit character assassination for his fav but. also one of the plot points is that the main villain of the first half went on a murder spree because he didn't want to dress like a clown. one of the plot points is that insane clown posse and guy fieri became presidents. one of the plot points is that the author has a crush on dante basco and rufio from "hook" is mentioned so many goddamn times. a plot point has buckets being used for reproduction. this is a canon line.

the greatest: dude. THIS is how every album should begin. such a strong start it got me hooked so fast. the fucking STRINGS???? “it’s you and me until the end”????? i am losing my mind and it’s only the first song

written all over your face: ok i see you mutuals i get it. I GET IT. i was like how good can this song be why is everyone so obsessed with the way he says hey babe. and i get it now. this man is moaning in my ear and i’m pretending to be fine. this is fucking sexy. he is fucking sexy oh my god

bigger than me: yes i am including the singles idc! i really don’t think it was The Odd One i honestly do think it fits in the album. and it still slaps. i love you baby girl thank you for the vocals

lucky again: um hi he sounds SO SOFT IN THIS ONE. but still so hot. it’s such a vibe!!!! i really really liked this one. he was lucky once he could be lucky again <3

face the music: i have a lot of weaknesses when it comes to louis but him singing about dancing has a special place in my heart. “i don’t want to face the music but i still want to dance with you” is such a soft lyric i’m sobbing. the pre chorus is EVERYTHING

chicago: STRINGS STRINGS STRINGS STRINGSSSSS. his voice is specially soft in this one wow. “would you have told me to keep going or would you say to walk away?” GOD. louis is the king of writing sad bangers he never fucking misses

all this time: MY JAW DROPPED??????? ok wow i was not expecting this vibe. i fucking love his voice idc how many times i say this he just sounds so good in this one although it kinda does get lost in the music a bit. still obsessed.

overall i think it’s THE album. it’s so fucking louis. the evolution from walls to this is beautiful to see. i do love walls but the production, the lyrics, the sound itself is so much mature, you can almost hear the confidence in it. i’m so proud of louis and this record. i can’t wait to hear it live someday <3

It is absolutely tragic that I’m already adding to Adventures in Aphobia, but here we are again! Let’s get a look at the phenomenal post I will be addressing.

Hope you enjoyed reading that as much as I did. You know, the biggest joke of this whole post is the poster thinking ace people feel comfortable on Tumblr. I promise you they do not XD.

It’s funny how when queer sub-groups complain about bigotry faced from the broader community (this happens a LOT with bi and ace people, but I’ve seen it happen to trans people too), the bigoted queer people immediately call YOU the bigot because they’re actually more oppressed than you, which means they get to say whatever they want. I’m not going to even entertain the oppression olympics on this one.

The answer as to who’s more oppressed always boils down to: it depends, in what way, and why does this matter?

There are a TON of transphobic gay people who throw their hands up when they get called out for their behavior and decry, “But I’m gay! You’re not oppressed for thinking you’re a boy!!”

And honestly, some aphobes do want ace people dead, and not all homophobes want gay people dead. Why are ace people one of the only groups in the queer community who has to personally confess to almost being murdered, disowned, r*ped and stabbed all in the same day to have any of their struggles taken seriously?? Do you make gay people do this too, or do you ever just believe them? 

It’s incredible that some people’s entire queer identity is rooted in the fact they’ve been murdered or disowned before, as if the second you’re not being beaten in the streets, do you really face any struggles? There are gay people who haven’t been disowned or killed (obviously). They’re still gay, and they can still talk about homophobia without being mocked for it.

Bonus points for this poster, in what must be purposeful assholery, not even using a standard, accepted definition of what it means to be asexual. “Oppressed for not having sex”. Yes, because “not having sex” is the definition of asexuality. I mean, God, at least be original and come up with a banger instead of this lazy insult.

There is literally nothing predatory about acknowledging minors can feel sexual attraction. Not only is it a fact provable but a five-second stint at any high school, but if you really think that’s creepy...that says more about you than anyone else. Just because minors experience sexual attraction doesn’t mean creepy-ass adults can take advantage of them.

Also...love that this poster said “LGBT aces are fine obv”. Is it obvious?? God, I love how aphobes will literally foam at the mouth about how asexual people are a bunch of attention-seeking, pedophiles who are trying to recruit children then immediately tag on a quick “but of course I support LGBT aces!!”. Are these people really so fucking thick they think their words don’t apply to bi, gay and trans aces?? I have yet to meet a single gay, bi or trans ace who feels positively about ace exclusionists. Your rhetoric inherently harms all ace people because it doesn’t give gay, bi and trans aces room to talk about their aphobic experiences. Well, I'm watching volume 3 and honestly I have so many thoughts about it I'm gonna make a first half and second half post. Buckle up because y'all now this is a wild ride! Also buckle up because this is were I start having some very controversial opinions lol.s

The show was airing the first half of this volume when I first got into it (it was somehow because of some amazing Ever After High fanart lol I still remember) so actually, Yang and Mercury's fight was my first experienced hiatus, you can imagine my distress lol.

Every volume the list of women who could step on me grows. But honestly, Winter is on top of that list. It's like they created her with all my weaknesses in mind...

The vytal festival fights are hilarious lol as the kids said, It was nice to see them all fight in a controlled and friendly enviroment instead of fighting actual murderers.

Yatsu and Coco and that poor team in the chapter 1 flashback did fight actual murderers tho, RIP to them (?

It's brawl in the family will forever be one of my favorite episodes lol Winter and Qrow simply steal the show everytime they're on the screen!

Also, I get other ships with the characters and understand why people doesn't like Snowbird... But I've had many people who don't watch the show watch that fight scene and the general consensus is always that they were flirting. That's the most sexual tension I've seen in this show, and we've had actual romantic partners interacting more than once lol

Subject change. Remember that scene when Mercury goes to tell Cinder he saw Qrow? At the end Cinder tells he and Emmerald to 'go to their rooms' ...but arem't they supposedly sharing a room since they're partners? Beacon teams all share a room so I don't get why they wouldn't lol.

I wish we could've seen more of Ciel Soleil, honestly, she was such a cutie lol. Kinda hoping She's brought back someday. If you are a fanfic writer and haven't tried to use Ciel as something like Penny's awkward and superserious bodyward in an AU, you should think about It, girl has potential!

Also, can I just say that I miss Willow? I knew I was gonna love her, but it was even more than I was expecting, I hope we get more Willow soon.

That scene in Ozpin's office when Ironwood looks at Oz, Glynda and Qrow before sighing and leaving is so telling of where his story was going. He was part of a team, yet he felt like it was him against the world. It's sad how much the others tried to show him their trust, but he was so into his fear that he couldn't see it.

I know this is a very controversial topic for the whole FNDM and that it was disproved multiple times, but I'll never get why would it be so bad if Ruby was Qrow's daughter. The signs are all there, It would make so much sense, and I don't feel it would've taken anything from the story. Alas, it wasn't meant to be*shrugs*

Penny tackling Ruby to the ground as a greeting is tradition <3 also she's always looking back at Ruby with the biggest smile on her face before leaving <3 God Penny is the most adorable girl I've ever seen. And my Nuts and Dolts shipping heart is so happy<3 and sad
