The Yellow Content: Dignified Images
The documentary The Uprising, by Peter Snowdon, portrays the amateur footage shot during the Arab Revolution started in 2010. The protesters - motivated to fight against their oppressive regime - claimed that they were documenting such raw scenes so that the rest of the world could see. The movie not only depicts peaceful moments of the demonstrations, but also bloody ones. For instance, vehicles running over citizens or street shootings. Enrico De Angelis, in the chapter of the book The Arab Archive called “The Controversial Archive: Negotiating Horror Images in Syria”, questions the morality of showing such raw footage - defined by him as “horror images.” Is it fair to show dead bodies for the sake of triggering an international reaction? Particularly, is it right to show pictures of deaths of the Arab world while those of the Western world are often hidden?
A representative example for the fact that Western world dead bodies are more dignified, in respect to the ones of the Arab world, is the way in which the yellow vests deceased were honored. The yellow vests movement, started in Paris in 2018, protests against the rise in fuel taxes. Since the start of the yellow vests demonstrations, 11 people died. Unlike the “horror-images” of the Arab world, the dead bodies of these people have never been publicly shared. Rather, the yellow vests dead members have been honored on the streets of the cities with signs (Picture A).

Fallen yellow vests members have been also identified as their names and date of decease were clearly written in the signs (Picture B), informations that are not often specified in the Arab “horror-images.” Because often pictures in the Arab world lack contextualization (Where were they shot? Who is the subject? etc.), they may be considered “orphan-images” in line with De Angelis’ definition. Pictures are defined orphans by De Angelis when they are “circulating mostly without the name of the photographer or the photographed. Often without even a caption or any other reference” (page 78).

The fact that there is a clear difference between how the Arab and the Western world share and frame their deaths is very problematic. Both the yellow vests movement and the Arab revolution have been bloody. Yet, on one hand, the deceased have been honored and identified without showing their corpses, while on the other hand, the images of the deaths have been publicly shared without specifying their names or circumstances. What gives to the Western corpses the right to be more dignified?
In the same book where Enrico De Angelis writes, Donatella Della Ratta, in the chapter “Why the Syrian Archive is no Longer About Syria”, questions some of the dynamics of the Syrian archive which - in the end - apply not only to the Syrian political situation, but to the whole world. Commercial content moderation (CCM), defined as the field in which workers clean up the web from content such as hate speech or child pornography, is core in this discussion. Gatekeepers, the people who work as commercial content moderators, have only a few seconds to decide which content should be removed and which content should be kept online. For this reason, the margin of risk that they make the wrong decision is very high. Moreover, given the fact that they are employed by big corporations, such as Facebook, demonstrates that there is an inner structure behind CCM which is biased. In other words, standardized algorithmic procedures or human gatekeepers tend to work at the advantage of the company they are employed in, which proves that the commercial content moderation system is flawed by design.
In the case of the yellow vests movement, gatekeeping worked in favor of the activists on Facebook. French social media journalist Vincent Glad called Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg the Yellow Vest movement’s “best ally.” This is because the algorithm of the platform overemphasized the content posted by the yellow vests protesters. “After a few likes for a group, we find ourselves submerged with that group’s content in our news feeds. The new algo pushed the Yellow Vests into a ‘filter bubble’ in which they hardly see content anymore that isn’t yellow” says Glad in the same article. Therefore, content moderation was of help to the yellow vests movements as it put into disadvantage the spread of counter-informations, such as Macron’s side of the story.
Overall, gatekeeping is a biased process that works for the interests of the companies managing it. For this reason, every social media user should be aware of it in order to make conscious decisions.

The Footballing Youth Match Report #8
Fleet Town U18 vs Camberley Town U18, Allied Counties League Match. Thursday 18th October, Krooner Park, Camberley, 7:45 KO.
The biggest league match of Fleet’s season would see them face top of the league Camberley in an equally contested game full of goals, drama and rivalry.
Camberley had not dropped a point and looked relentless going forward as well as competent at the back playing high intensity football having lots of possession.
Over 100 spectators came to watch this so called ‘Clash of the Titans’ as they were both looking for three points to either further their lead at the top or bridge the gap between the two teams.
A long awaited kick off came and instantly Camberley looked the more dangerous of the two sides. They managed to pin the defense back to their own box enjoying a lot of time and space in the middle of the park. Fleet were struggling to find their feet in the game and failed to get their free flowing passing going due to Camberley’s constant pressure.
Camberley looked to play out from the back leaving the fleet forwards out of position and on the back foot. They would play balls either into the strikers feet or over the top between the full back and centre half. In the first half hour this was effective as the wide players were allowed to turn on the ball and run at the full backs leading to either a shot on goal or a cross in to the box. However these possible chances lead to little success.
With ten minutes to go in the half fleet had managed to soak up Camberleys pressure and were mainly playing on the counter attack. After a long ball had strayed out of play Fleet had a throw-in just inside their own half. The ball was thrown into the centre midfielder who was allowed to turn. He then passed the ball in front of the right winger and made a forward run after passing the ball. The wide player then played a cutting pass between the Camberley left back and centre half which put the midfielder in on goal on the right side of the 18 yard box. The Keeper questionalbly did not come and claim this ball and remained on his goaline. The centre midfielder was allowed to diagonally angle his dribble to towards the goal before firing a shot at the keepers near post which he failed to stop. Fleet unexpectedly took the lead and all the players celebrated as if they had won the league!
But Camberley weren’t going to go down that easily. With moments to go in the half Camberley had a throw deep in the fleet half. After a late run by a camberley midfielder allowed him to receive the ball without contention, he was able to deliver a scrumptious cross right on to the penalty spot which was met by the big 6’5 striker who punched a header to the keepers left side. Somehow the keeper got a hand to it but was only able to parry the ball as far as the Camberley winger who tapped the ball into the back of the Fleet net.
Moments later the whistle for half time was blown and the two teams went in to the break all square.
HT: Fleet Town 1 Camberley Town 1
Fleet started the second half like a different team. They started to keep the ball on the floor and play in wide areas with the left midfielder in particular having lots of joy. Fleet looked more regimented at the back and as soon as Camberley lost their way whilst attacking they lost their team spirit and began to play like individuals making it increasingly easy for Fleet to stop their atttacking play and continue to break in transition.
Halfway through the second fourty five Fleet broke with pace after the ball was given away by the Camberley midfielder, following an overlapping run by the fleet right back met by a ball in behind the right side of defense the full back was able to deliver a cross to the near post. The ball was about waist height and was met on the volley by the Fleet striker who instinctively swung his right foot at the ball which flew into goal leaving the keeper no time to react. Once again Fleet, who many saw as the underdog, had taken the lead!
Camberley pushed for the equaliser, committing more men forward but they were still unable to create many goal scoring chances. Their best being a header by the big striker from a cross on the left hand side which went over the goal after coming off his shoulder.
Fleet weren’t ready to give up their lead so easily. They remained sturdy at the back allowing their forwards to work high up the pitch and feed off loose balls. Fleet were constantly communicating to each other to maintain shape and stop any Camberley attacks from escalating.
Whilst doing so, they were able to create one more good chance for the themselves. Once again on the right wing a cross was delivered from deep and after it was poorly cleared by the Camberley right back the ball landed at the feet of the Fleet left midfielder. Instinctively he struck the ball without thinking down the centre of the goal and the keeper who was reasonably small couldn’t reach the ball as it rebound against the roof of the net.
Ten minutes to go, Fleet two goals to the good. They were almost there.
After an inspirational first eighty minutes there was no chance Fleet were letting this lead slip. Camberley hadn’t given up but for all of their individual efforts they were unable to collectively mount a response sufficient enough to trouble the Fleet defense.
FT Fleet Town 3 Camberley Town 1
This was a real statement from Fleet to all the other teams in the league. Camberley were almost seen as the Real Madrid of the league, scouting the best players in the area. Having their ‘galacticoes’ play together looking to either move them up to the first team or get them at near enough academy level of youth football. However they were unable to pick apart a team who alongside Fleet Spurs were the only unbeaten teams in the league due to their desire to persevere as a team rather than force opportunities for themselves.
This team work ethic was really the main difference between the two teams and it paid dividence on this occasion. Their next encounter at Calthorpe Park will see if Camberley are able to learn from their mistakes.
