How Do You Spot a Liar? Because most of us are not very good at spotting the lies people tell. If you’d like to become highly skilled at spotting a liar - You need to develop the talent of noticing and correctly reading: subtle body language changes, vocal tones, tense, word choices, and brief facial cues called “Micro-expressions.” A micro-expression is the term created by the famous psychologist, Paul Eckman whose research and real-life stories inspired the “Lie to Me” series. (The TV Series introduces this topic in a fun way). Micro-expressions are small, unconscious leaks of concealed emotion. If you ever try to hide how you really feel from someone – by pretending to be happy or sad when that’s not how you really feel, chances are some of the real feelings will still leak through in your face. These small “tells” show up on your face for less than half a second. Because they are so fast, they’re often misinterpreted or missed all together. Robert Feldman, the author of The Liar In Your Life says, “It's very hard to tell when someone is lying… some indicators of deception, like facial and body language, could merely be signs of anxiety or nervousness that have nothing to do with lying." So, it’s really hard for most people to spot a liar! While some professionals like secret service agents have been trained to spot the face of aggression on a single person in a large crowd... UPLEVEL Your Word Choices – STOP Saying BUT! “I made a big communication mistake recently… And I know better… Yet it still slipped out! Most people say this word, without knowing how damaging it can be. And how much it can impact their loved ones. Maybe you’ve said it too… “Thanks for the compliment, but my hair is a mess.” I recently said the worst one… “I love you, but…” And I was called out. I am grateful I was… Because this word always cancels, what came before it… BUT is a Disclaimer Word. Notice how when “but” is added, our brains only seem to notice what comes after the word, “but…” And the “but” usually attaches a negative onto a positive statement. In math, they say – a negative and a positive cancel each other out… Yet, in communication, the result is even worse! If the person you are talking to only notices this negative, it actually cancels the positive - and becomes a negative experience for them. Leaving the person feeling put down. While negations have a very helpful role in logically organizing information and thought, they have no place in your personal relationships. Do You Spot Lies? Some people seem to have the natural ability to spot a liar without any training. Who are these naturally gifted people? It’s those who have high emotional intelligence – Because their survival has depended on their ability to read people! Think about it… People who live on the streets, MUST read people quickly… Children who are abused, MUST respond quickly to situations… Criminals MUST read people well, to see if you believe their lies… Criminals, abused children, and highly trained professionals – are able to read your expressions accurately over 80% of the time. Yet the professionals you might expect to be good at reading people - like judges, cops, and social workers – on average were found to detect deception at a 54% rate. This means you probably have about a 50/50 chance of spotting a liar! Unless you’ve been forced to learn emotional intelligence for survival, you’ll probably spend lots of time – studying tutorials, practicing, and watching people to learn how to read people at a high level. How Would You Like A Puppy Today? Because Mollie the Red Merle Border Collie just had 7 Puppies. My wife’s Sister - Katelyn Beals raises them in Pima Arizona. While I’ve been here, I’ve been able to go out and play with them. It’s delightful to have all 7 of these cute puppies climbing all over me. They are adorable and intelligent. The farmers in the area train them to herd their cows. So, they are very energetic, and love to walk and run with me. These ones are 8 weeks old - and ready for you to come get for $700. These Pure-Bred puppies (and their parents) are registered with the American Border Collie Association. The first 5 in the photos are males, and the last 2 are females. What’s The Best Replacement For the Word BUT? The best replacement for “BUT” is usually “And…” or “Yet…” “You did a great job, Yet you missed one!” “I love you, And I disagree with you…” Does it feel different to read? And you don’t even have to understand how it works, to notice – that it has a more positive impact on you. Notice how others respond to you – when you choose a different word. Then notice how they respond to you – when you switch up the word order. Because changing one word really can make a difference for you! Here’s a photo of me when I taught at an elite private school. The students there tested and scored higher than the top Ivy-league private schools! The school had a strict policy about keeping grades above 80%. Anything less was considered failing! I had many bright students, and they all knew what was expected. Yet towards the end of the school year, even the best of my students worked a little less in class… One day, a worried mother came to talk to me in the classroom… Her son was of one of my top-performing students. “Aarav got a 79% on his geography test! What can I do? I don’t want his grades to impact his ability to get into a good college!” I laughed inwardly. Because I was teaching first grade. Have you ever heard of a college recruiter looking at elementary school grades? Yet here she was concerned - that her son could be falling behind. I assured her that Aarav was just getting a little more social in class, and that this one test score would not impact his overall grade. I then expressed my confidence that he would still be able to get into Harvard. Because we had such high academic standards, some parents got stressed out over even small movements in their children’s grades. Afterall, they were paying top dollar for the best quality education! In times of stress, I’m sure this little word has slipped out… Yet it is one of the Most Damaging Words in The English Language. “You did great on this test, BUT you missed this one.” Maybe you’ve said it too? He wanted to inspire those - who are trying to make the world a better place. What’s the #1 thing you can do to improve your ability to read people? Notice their patterns! For body-language experts this is called, establishing a baseline. A baseline is someone’s normal pattern of behavior - For example, because I spent a lot of time on the streets growing up, I don’t use many gestures when I talk. This is common in abused children, criminals, and other people who have experienced survival situations growing up. Yet, my Father-in-law is very expressive when he talks. He definitely “Talks with his hands.” This is his baseline. His baseline is the opposite of my baseline. If he were trying to conceal, the extra concentration required to tell a lie may break his normal gesture pattern. When people hide an emotion, tell a lie, or are non-authentic in any way, they will deviate from their normal patterns and if you watch closely, you’ll find incongruencies, and other little “tells” in their body-language, vocal tones, and word choices. So, the best thing to do - is to watch and listen for incongruencies of any kind. When you see them, ask, “What could it mean?” Deviations don’t always mean someone is lying – it can just mean they are hiding their true feelings about something. Like when a speaker tries to cover up their nervousness when they are in front of a crowd. So, if you want people to trust you when you speak in public – It’s a good idea to practice as much as you need until you become comfortable presenting. Because if you leak the emotions you are trying to conceal, you’ll be trusted less. How Often Do You Lie? Because most Americans lie every day! The Average Person Lies 3X during a 10-minute Conversation. Does this stat seem high to you? While most people see themselves as honest, there is a strong human desire to seek the approval of others – so most of us tell the occasional lie. While you may only tell “white” lies, everyone “omits the truth” sometimes. What Kind of Lies Do You Tell? 98% of teenagers feel that lying is morally wrong. They even say that trust and honesty are essential in their personal relationships. Yet 98% of teens also say – “I Lie To My Parents!” 81% of Americans tell white lies every day. 75% of students actually admit to being “Serial Liars” when it comes to saving money or getting jobs. 68% of women lie about their weight on their driver’s license. 65% of adults think it is (sometimes even often) ok to lie to avoid hurting someone’s feelings. Only 17% of men and women in the 18-24 age range would reveal having an STD to a sexual partner. Only 11% of adults of adults 18-24 would reveal their unfaithfulness to a lover. Dr. Michael Lewis says, "In a single day, most people lie a minimum of 25 times!" Tired Of Sales Gimmicks? (Read the Story and Respond Below) I really wanted to attend this course… And needed 1 or 2 more clients to afford it… Then the unimaginable happened! Our current client had a divorce, which turned into a legal nightmare, and he had to pause his ad campaign. So, I was really bummed. Then – a few days later, the guy who held the course (I couldn’t afford) announced he was doing a scholarship! I just had to write: 1. Why I Deserved this Scholarship 2. And How I Would Grow If I Went to This Course So, I wrote a wonderful letter promoting myself – and I was accepted! I was pretty excited about it! After I got a call from their sales team - it became clear that it wasn’t a real scholarship, it was just a sales gimmick… The salesman hadn’t read my letter. He didn’t even know me… Everyone who wrote anything just got a second sales call – to close the deal at a discounted price. It was just a sales strategy – to fill their class.
