to most, theseus (he/him) is an asshole. to some, he's just a kid under pressure. but his professors and peers all must admit, he's a promising alchemist. raised by his single mother alongside his older half-sister, the fact he made it to the academy at all without a prestigious background is a surprise; he intends to keep you surprised.

mac joie (he/him) just seems like a typical stoner college kid at the surface. and don't get me wrong - he is. but a glance of his eyes reveals his demonic heritage and the bronze ring he wears surely isn't a coincidence. he doesn't talk about his past a lot, but you may connect the dots when you check out his sister cam's punk shows with the maggots.

what's some of your favorite books of all time?

Aaahhh this question is a bit tricky for me… because even though I read tons of books as a kid I pretty much fell out of reading published novels for pleasure since leaving school and only recently picked it back up again in the last couple of years. Before that, I think the only book series I had finished reading in the last decade were A Song Of Ice And Fire series and the Captive Prince trilogy, both of which I enjoyed. I remember having a minor fixation with Lord Of the Flies when I read it in 5th grade because it was ~darker & edgier~ than anything else I had read before at the time… I haven’t reread it since so idk if I can say it’s an all-timer but I’m pretty sure it has influenced my taste in stories in general lol. One of my first fandoms back in the day was for a certain book series about wizards but for reasons I’m sure I don’t have to explain I don’t fuck with it anymore lol.

Most of the pleasure reading I’ve done for the past 20ish years or so where I got to admire writing as a craft has been through fanfiction hahaha. Tbh I’m starting to realize that a lot of the inspiration for my own writing comes not from books but from completely different mediums such as film and music, which I have consumed a lot more of as an adult—trying to translate visuals and sounds and the feelings evoked by them into words is what fuels me, ykwim? Anyway now that I’m pivoting back into reading & writing as a hobby I can at least show you a sampling of the sorts of things that are on my bookshelf atm (either read, started, or TBR)… hopefully some of these will become new all-time favorites! Also if y’all have recommendations I’m all ears :3

Newest chapter (chapter 4) of Older, or Two Brothers and a Train Station up now

Chapter summary: In which Theseus flirts, Newt begins to understand subtlety while also missing 99.9% of subtlety, and Theseus is not old enough for any of this shit

Excerpt (opening scene):

Theseus was still riding high on a quidditch victory when he packed onto the train at Hogsmeade for Spring holidays that year, surrounded by hundreds of students, including his boisterous teammates and a fair few admirers of the fairer sex from every House.

It was a joyous and pleasant journey, and he couldn’t help but notice that the girls who had ignored him last year now took every opportunity to lay hands on his upper arms, that even the older Hufflepuff boys who used to only include him because of his startling proficiency with hexes (and, admittedly, because of who his uncle was) tugged him unrestrainedly, now, into one-armed hugs.

As they neared London, he tidied his things back into his trunk and decided to carefully flirt with Mallory Abbot and Eira Jones (who had always been fond of him and his “darling little brother”) when they continued to hover at his shoulder much closer than usual, long past the time the rest of the compartment emptied as most students returned to their own carriages in preparation for the station.

All in all, being fourteen continued to treat him well.

When the train finally rolled in, to Theseus’ distracted—but nevertheless great—relief, Newt was wedged between their parents on the platform. That was a good sign. Though his little brother had a pair of unseasonal earmuffs shoved over his ears and an actual mouse very obviously in his front pocket, he otherwise was not only very much physically present but even half-way emotionally engaged, using their father for balance so he could stand on tip-toe, bouncing minutely as he awaited Theseus' arrival…

Theseus tugged his trunk down the steps—pausing briefly to help the girls with their own—before hurrying up to his family with Misses Jones and Abbot still hilariously in tow.

“Welcome home, Sailor!” his father declared jovially upon pulling him into a warm hug and passing him off to his mother for a quick kiss and a firm embrace. Helios then nodded down at Newt, who was smiling up at Theseus, gaze directed somewhere just past his ear. (Theseus had long quit turning around to see if there was actually something behind him.) “This little salamander’s been uncontrollable in his excitement to see you today, so—please—no running off for flying as soon as we get home... Give the poor lad a few moments of your time.”

“How about a few hours instead?” Theseus immediately teased, and he laid a hand on Newt’s shoulder before extracting a pack of Ice Mice he’d bought for him in Hogsmeade from an inner pocket.

Newt’s face lit up at the gift, and Theseus quietly apologised for missing his birthday as Newt hunched over to admire the sparkling illustration on the tin. Theseus was pretty sure he was angling it just so, such that the quivering mouse peering from his calico pocket might see the artist’s rendering of its brethren.

(But there was really no telling with Newt…)

“No appointments today,” Helios explained, grinning and recapturing Theseus’ attention as Rowan was waved down by another mother for a chat. “So you can have him for as long as he’ll tolerate you.”

“Appointments!” Eira Jones immediately exclaimed in a purposefully low tone, turning to Theseus to inquire with concern just as Helios was pulled away by the couple who had summoned Rowan, too— “Is he unwell?”

But that also happened as Miss Abbott crouched on the platform in her skirt (which Theseus tried very hard not to notice, because he was meant to be becoming a gentleman) to better gain his little brother’s attention:

“Newton! You’ve gotten so tall, haven’t you!”

Unsurprisingly, Newt only stared at her, so she continued teasingly—

“But it’s a little warm for earmuffs, isn’t it, Mr. Scamander?”

“People and trains are loud, every season,” Newt finally responded stiltedly, one hand tight about his tin of peppermints.

Both girls released an immediate peal of laughter that made Newt unintentionally clench his other hand into a fist but that nevertheless caught Theseus’ attention wholeheartedly, for it sounded the way he thought laughs must sound when writers said things like ‘tinkling, as bells’...

I'm still very new to Dragon Age and haven't finished Origins yet but in a very long post about white-washing I saw someone claim that Alistair is a person of color who is white-washed as the games go on and uh? Using stills just from Origins we have:

My impression is that Alistair is white?

To be clear, I am not invested in Alistair being white, and I'm open to being informed otherwise (I've played only half of one game), but from the little I know I don't have any evidence of him being a character of color.
